Fly Fishing Expert Dennis Carter
THE PERFECT CAST LOCAL FLY FISHING EXPERT OFFERS ADVICE FOR ASPIRING ANGLERS Writer / Matt Keating Photographer / Jubilee Edgell
Dennis Carter, a fly fishing expert, loves sharing his enthusiasm for the activity. “I have been fly fishing for 25 years,” Carter says. “I have always loved to fish, and one day someone I worked with mentioned fly fishing and asked me if I would like to try it. I knew nothing
about it at the time but had always been fascinated in watching someone cast a line so far and how some people were so graceful in how they did it.” Carter had always been a spin cast or bait casting fisherman before trying fly fishing and had never even held a fly rod in his hand. Today, he says fly fishing has brought him a lot of happiness. 6 / THE LAKES / AUGUST 2020 / TheLakesMagazine.com
“I think that initially it was the joy it has brought into my life, the peace and serenity I received from it,” he says. “And now I believe that I love it for the way I see others who learn to appreciate those same things and how excited they are as they get better and better at their fly casting.” Carter also builds fishing rods.
“I have several suppliers that I use in building custom graphite and fiberglass fly rods,” Carter says. “I can also restore old rods, including old split cane or bamboo fly rods, provided they are not too badly damaged.” Carter begins the process when he receives all the items needed to build the fly rod, the rod, cork handle, reel seat and cap, the guides, hook keeper and tip top. “I am a bit of a perfectionist, and building a fly rod requires, patience and a determination to build what I like to
call the ‘perfect rod,’” he says. “The nice thing about building a custom fly rod for someone is giving them the options of deciding exactly what they want, what color blank to use, which kind and color of thread. All rods are tested by casting them before I give them to a customer.” Carter also offers private lessons to individuals and small groups. “I can offer lessons in fly fishing to anyone who wishes to learn about it,” he says. Carter started giving lessons because every time he went fly fishing, he would have TheLakesMagazine.com / AUGUST 2020 / THE LAKES / 7
someone watch him casting for a while, and then approach him and say, “Hey Mister, would you teach me to do that?” Carter gives lessons in fly fishing and fly casting to a host of individuals and organizations, including the Boys and Girls Club, the Life Enrichment Center, the Plymouth Park Department and more. “I enjoy teaching, watching and listening to people as they ask questions and then progress in their quest of the perfect cast,” Carter says. “Casting a fly rod properly is the essence of good fly fishing. If you

cannot cast well, you will never reach the fish and at that point you are not even in the game.” Carter noted that a person needs to first know that fly fishing is different from bait or the spin casting way of fishing. “In bait and spin casting, it is the bobber, weight and bait that carry the lure to the fish,” Carter says. “In fly fishing, it is the fly line that carries the fly or lure to the fish. Basic fly fishing, and what you need to be successful, can be taught easily. The real meat of fly fishing is fly casting and performing each cast well.” Carter added that is not easy for the vast majority of people. “It requires learning a new way to cast, and then when students learn the proper fly casting techniques, then it is a lot of practice,” Carter says. “It would seem as if none of us start out fly casting. The vast majority of us learn to fish using a bait casting or spinning rod and reel.” Carter has good advice on how to fly fish successfully.

“First off, you must know what kind of fish you are looking to catch, and what kind of food that fish prefers,” Carter says. “So use a fly that mimics what that fish may eat. For instance, a crappie will usually take a small minnow as food, so use a fly that looks like a small minnow that is small enough for a crappie to get into its mouth.”
Carter also advises people to not be afraid to try different fly colors. “Spiders, beetles and other insects are not all white or black, and scientists who study fish say that some species can actually see different forms of the colors orange, pink and purple,” Carter says. “If you tie flies, experiment with learning and tying different forms of flies. If you purchase flies, ask others who fly fish what they have been successful with.” Carter is a Plymouth resident and loves the area. “The people are nice, there are smaller crowds and it is very quiet,” he says. “Plymouth is my adopted home.” Written inside the bill of Carter’s fly fishing hat says, “The man who said that money can’t buy happiness never bought and cast a well-built, perfectly balanced fly rod.”

M I N T CITY MILLWORK PROVIDE S CU STOME RS WITH UN IQUE, H ANDCRA F TE D CLOCKS Writer / Mary Lowry Photographer / Jubilee Edgell
Attention to detail, combined with good customer service, is a tale as old as time for Wayne Helmuth, owner of Mint City Millwork in Bremen. The shop has been open since 1992 but has undergone many makeovers. Originally a customized
furniture store, it switched over to kitchenware years later. Helmuth knew that his path was building clocks after he constructed his first grandfather clock in 2001. Today, the Amish business sells handmade grandfather clocks, mantel clocks, wall clocks and weather stations. Helmuth has always had an interest in
building clocks, though. When he was beginning to date his wife, the first gift he ever gave her was a clock he made on his own. “I had bought it as a kid and assembled it and gave it to her,” he says. “It was something I always had an interest in, but

I had never really tried it until after we were trying to do furniture and kitchens. In 2001, I did my first grandfather clock, and once we started in grandfather clocks, I kind of knew that was where we wanted to stay at.” Today, the focus has shifted from handcrafting beautiful grandfather clocks to creating wall clocks that are, quite literally, works of art. The unique clocks were originally thought of in 2013 when Helmuth was working with an auction company. They were looking for a clock that would play an auctioneers’ chant at the top of every hour. As he built that, Helmuth thought about other kinds of things that people could have played in their clocks. He soon realized that Gospel music could play, and Mint City Millwork started selling clocks playing Gospel music in 2015. “When we were doing [the auctioneer]

clocks, I figured that we could do Gospel music,” Helmuth says. “I checked around, and the auction company didn’t want anything to do with it, so with that in mind, we started doing clocks with Gospel music in 2015. From there, it’s just picked up over the years.” The wall clocks are hugely popular. They help to bring in a focus on local businesses, too. Helmuth intentionally looks to support the community by getting recordings for the clocks from local music artists and groups. The clocks feature artwork on the front, looking to inspire the customer. The artwork can be selected from the vast compilation provided by Mint City Millwork or customers can have their own image placed on the clock. It can be a high-resolution photo, a painting, a charcoal rendering or a sketch. Handcrafting all of the clocks in the shop is one of Helmuth’s favorite parts. He loves getting to talk with customers, and he loves getting to use his hands to create works of art. “I like doing the handwork, but I also like the interaction with customers in the showroom,” he says. “[Making the clocks is] probably the part that I enjoy the most. I like doing work with my hands. We’re always doing new designs, and it allows us to free up some of our creative ideas and put them into use.” The customized clocks are not the only unique thing about the business, though. The name Mint City Millwork is striking. Helmuth explains that Mint City is a nickname for Bremen. In the past, Bremen was a hotspot for growing mint. Helmuth lives now on his family farm, where his grandfather grew mint years ago. “Bremen, at one time, the town was known for mint,” Helmuth says. “Peppermint, spearmint, that kind of stuff. My grandfather used to raise mint on the farm. Now we’re the third generation on the farm, and we don’t

ummer is always a charming season, and this year is surprisingly no exception. Even though maintaining a healthy distance from others has resulted in many canceled summer festivities, it has not been able to stop day-cations on the lake. According to Ryan Coverstone, the owner of Socks Marina, a hidden gem on Webster Lake, more people than ever are seeking solace on the water. “They’re taking their families to the lake,” he says. “What a great place to make memories and to social distance!” Socks Marina, which is enjoying its 60th season, was initially purchased by the Coverstone family in the 1975. “When I was 4 or 5 years old, I used to spend time here on the lake with my grandmother Jean, in her wooden canoe, swimming, fishing, waving at the Dixie
Boat, Coverstone says. “My grandfather and two of his brothers owned it, my father and lot of his cousins worked here at that time.” His parents, Dino and Jeannie Coverstone, purchased the Marina in 2008. Ever since then, it has been owned off and on by family members. Growing up on the lakes instilled a love for the water in Coverstone at a young age, which has proven to have a fundamental influence in just about every aspect of his working life to this point. “The experiences and relationships I’ve made over my career have given me everything I need to be good at this,” Coverstone says. “I have worked on every side of the boating industry. I’ve tested, designed, engineered, welded, and have been a factory trained technician and worked for a supplier to the industry. I’ve been on all sides of it. It has given me the
knowledge to be able to answer, or find an answer to, all of my customer’s questions.” Since rejoining the marina three years ago, Coverstone has been working to enhance the family business. Of course, none of this would be possible without his employees. “We’ve done a real good job here and we have a great staff,” Coverstone says. “We couldn’t do any of this without them.” Ryan’s teenaged son also works there, marking the fourth generation of Coverstones to be involved in the business. Thanks to the Marina’s advantageous position on Webster Lake, Coverstone and his team have the ability to service the surrounding lakes as well. “Our main [focus] is within 10 miles of here — the Barbee chain, Tippy, Dewart, Knapp, Syracuse, Wawasee, Webster,” Coverstone adds.

However, the Socks Marina customer base stretches as far as Angola, Warsaw, as well as Noble and Whitley counties. “It’s a great sphere and some really interesting communities around those lakes that are fun to interact with, even if it’s once or twice a year,” he says. As a full-service marina, this business has a retail side that offers a wide range of new and used boats. They offer TRIFECTA and Misty Harbor Pontoons, Polar Kraft
Aluminum Boats and power them with Mercury and Tohatsu outboards. — which can be viewed in their year-round showroom. They also carry boat accessories and parts. For the day-out crowd, Socks Boat Rental offers pontoon, fishing boat, canoe, and kayak rentals. They maintain a private boat launch right on Webster Lake, which is available for a nominal fee. Not only do they service and sell boats, but they also offer summer trailer and winter boat storage as well.
“Starting after Labor Day, we bring everything in for the winter,” he says. “We winterize all makes and models, anything outside the standard service that our technicians notice goes immediately on an estimate saying, ‘Hey, you really should take care of this over the winter so it’s not an issue in the spring’, and store it — whether that’s in one of our storage buildings or shrink wrap and store it here on our property. That’s one of the nicest things that any of our customers say or do for us, is by trusting us enough to tell their friend.” - Ryan Coverstone Along with a long list of products, the marina has Factory-Trained technicians on-staff for their customers’ convenience. “We like to be ready if they need anything,” Coverstone says. “We can get it in, get it fixed and get it back on the water.” The maintenance offered by the marina runs the gamut from simple fixes, like a burnt-out lightbulb, to the most complicated, including on the lake emergency repairs. Despite the longevity of this business, there are people that don’t know it exists.
However, Socks Marina — which is named after its first owner, Francis “Sock” Shear — has served generations of water lovers. “There are families on the lake who have been coming here as long as they can remember,” Coverstone says. “I have customers older than me who have been coming here since they were kids. FENCED IN Mullet’s Fencing & Supplies Specializes In All Manner of Fence Styles Writer / Angela Cornell Photographer / Jubilee Edgell
As far as human inventions go, the fence is one of the oldest and most versatile. One of the oldest fencing systems known to mankind was created from fieldstones and logs by the Celts in Great Britain nearly 5,000 years ago. The purpose is still relatable, even today - to mark boundaries between fields. This goes to show that some things never change, even if the materials used and the ways fences are installed have changed.
Mullet’s Fencing & Supplies, LLC in Plymouth has been building commercial, residential and agriculture fences in the area for more than 30 years. The original owner, Ken Mullet, opened the business in 1986 and then sold it to pursue another business venture, Northern Indiana Axle in Nappanee. Throughout the next few years, Mullet’s changed hands a few times. Eventually Mullet himself approached some personal friends and asked them to consider buying it.

“He just said that us boys would do good with it,” says Jerad Borkholder, a current co-owner. “He really had a longing for someone to take it and keep it going, and to make something out of it. That’s what happened. We ended up investing in it.” It proved to be a good investment for Borkholder and his brothers, and an opportunity for which they are still thankful to Mullet.
KNOWING YOU HAVE A GOOD PRODUCT AND KNOWING THAT THE GUYS DO A GOOD JOB ON INSTALLATION - THAT ITSELF MAKES IT VERY FUN. - JERAD BORKHOLDER
“It’s unique that Ken got us boys into it he kind of pressured Reuben, David and me into buying it,” Borkholder says. In time, a couple friends joined the brothers in the business. Together, they have endeavored to take the business to new heights. “We were looking to improve it and that’s where we tried to gain efficiency,” Borkholder says. “My goal, with me buying into the business, is to be an asset to the community.” To that end, the staff tries to keep all their THETHE LAKES MAGAZINE 2020 LAKES MAGAZINE/ AUGUST / AUGUST 2020/ thelakesmagazine.com / thelakesmagazine.com/ 23
business in the area. Mullet’s offers a wide range of fencing styles, from residential chain link and decorative fencing to farm enclosures, and from commercial fencing to privacy fences. The materials they use are extremely varied. Customers can choose between wood, wire, metal and vinyl. The company also utilizes recycled railroad ties and oil piping when customers are looking for a style of fencing that incorporates those materials. Not only are these materials varied enough to meet just about any fencing need, they are also durable. “We have 30-year warranties on pretty much all of our products,” Borkholder says. From the moment that a potential customer reaches out to Mullet’s about installing a fence, the staff is focused on a quality experience for the client. After that initial contact, Dwight Borkholder meets with the client to inspect the build area and offer a free quote.

“You tell Dwight how you want it, what you want to see, what kind of fence you want and what you’re trying to accomplish with the fence - holding animals or ponies, or if it’s decorative,” Borkholder says. “After that, it’s a matter of scheduling the Mullet’s Fencing & Supplies team to come out and install the fence. If you’re OK with the quote, we’ll be out in two or three weeks.” Service is not the only thing that Mullet’s offers. The business sells fencing parts and materials for DIYers, equine and
bovine equipment, and a feed line for pets and farm animals. They also have fence installation equipment to rent. Ultimately, Borkholder’s favorite parts of the business are the interpersonal aspects and being able to fulfill the needs of customers. “I love the retail side of it,” he adds. “Knowing you have a good product and knowing that the guys do a good job on installation - that itself makes it very fun.” Mullet’s Fencing & Supplies is located at 6223 8th Road in Plymouth. To learn more about the company and the kinds of fencing offered, check out their web site at mulletsfencingllc.com. You can also call them at 574-354-0803. To schedule a time to get a free quote for your fencing project, contact Dwight at 574-536-5418.

Dave Lambright, owner of Dalam Welding in Topeka, Indiana, says he has had many loyal customers since his business began in 1995. “We have had a lot of repeat customers, and that has really helped the business,” “I worked as an electrician for Forest River Lambright says. “People keep coming back. for 16 years,” Lambright says. “I learned We now have nine employees.” welding when I was 13 years old.” Lambright says he previously worked in the recreational vehicle industry.
Lambright learned how to weld from his father Alvin.
“My dad had a small engine repair shop for 39 years,” Lambright says. “He had a welder that would fabricate motor mounts on a hay bailer. Dad’s business was called Lambright Engine Service, and he sold it about eight to ten years ago. We did a lot of

good work there.” Lambright says Dalam Welding enjoys repeat business from farmers, as well as individuals who live on or near lakes. “We have a welder shop at our residence,” Lambright says. “There are quite a lot of lakes near our shop, so that really helps business. People need parts for their boats and engines - things they need to fix.” Positive word of mouth has also benefited Dalam Welding. “We get a lot of referrals from people that are happy with our work,” Lambright says. “We do welding work on pontoons, boat lifts, docks and piers. We work on the hinges of the pontoons, and work on hay bail conveyers. We also repair boats, work on chicken tractors, and make construction scaffolding.”

Dalam Welding also sells a wide variety of parts in the company shop. “We sell stainless steel bolts, nuts, hinges and latches,” Lambright says. “We also sell V-belts, bearings, sprockets, pins and trailer hitch couplers.” Lambright notes that business this year has been particularly strong.
“I like the fact that you can go uptown in a horse and buggy, and after you get there everything is easy to get to,” he says. “You can walk up to all of the stores. There are a lot of friendly people, and it’s great. I really like it.” Lambright notes that city leaders in Elkhart have been kind and supportive of his business.
“We built a barge to clean the north branch of the Elkhart River,” Lambright says. “We picked up some logs and cut them up. The lake association here has liked our work, and has asked us to keep doing it.” Dalam Welding is located at 7665 South 200 West in Topeka. For more information, call them at 260-768-8199.
“I don’t know if COVID-19 has had a lot to do with it, but we have had a lot more new customers from different places,” Lambright says. “There are a lot of customers finding out about us. I think people are wanting to visit rural areas, and we have had a lot more walk-in customers than we have ever had before. We also get a lot of customers from Huntington and Warsaw, Indiana. I’ve talked to other business owners around here, and they have said they have been swamped with business.” Lambright’s family helps him in operating the business. “My wife Marilyn does the accounting, taxes and paperwork,” Lambright says. “My sons, Karl, 19, and Lavon, 17, help me with the welding and the business. My daughter Malinda, 14, works with the shop’s parts, does the pricing of the parts, and handles the shipping. My daughter LouAnn, 11, works with the shop’s ring rollers. She gets up at 6 a.m. to do that work.” Lambright is proud of the work Dalam Welding has done for construction scaffolding. “We have received a lot of positive words from construction people that like our scaffolding,” he says. “I also have heard people say a lot of nice things about the attic stairs we do. We build pull-down attic stairs for garages. They are for a 12foot ceiling height, and are walk-up stairs. They are self contained, and they have been very popular.” Lambright says he loves Topeka and its residents. Artisan Leather Shop Provides Quality Goods Writer and Photographer / Angela Cornell
The purses, belts, wallets and other products sold at Silver Star Leather start out as hide that many people would probably throw away. Where others may only see a piece of leather, Loren Yoder, owner of Silver Star Leather, sees a beautiful fashion item in the making. When a piece of leather - whether it’s cow, crocodile, cobra or frog, to name a few of the options - arrives at the shop, Yoder begins to devise what he can make from it.
BELTS • WALLETS • HANDBAGS
“The thing I like about this is that it is so endless,” he explains. “We’re just scratching the surface as far as the different types of products we can make, and the fashion industry as far as belts, wallets and purses. If you’re bored, it’s your fault. Just come up with a new idea and try it. It’s too much fun.” Even though the business offers dozens of creations, both wholesale across the nation as well as retail, Silver Star Leather is known for custom products. “I’d say that the most popular is probably gun holsters and knife sheaths,” Yoder says. “We also do a lot of custom wallets of every shape and size.” Yoder doesn’t work exclusively with domestic leathers. Some of his hides come from around the world, and all are internationally certified through CITES, an international organization that

oversees and protects endangered plants and animals. Therefore, the materials are legal to work with, even the extremely rare and exotic leathers that come from protected breeds like elephants, stingrays and eels. “Everything is so tightly regulated,” Yoder says. “CITES knows where it is, if it’s legal, where it’s going and who has it. I keep my paperwork until the hide is gone because each hide has a CITES tag on it.” The custom projects provide Yoder and his team with valuable inspiration. “My goal is to continue to do custom stuff where you not only help people with their little individual project, but you also gain knowledge,” he says. “There are so many variables in the custom world and that’s what got me started - and it’s something I don’t want to lose.” Silver Star Leather doesn’t only offer standard leather fashion goods. They make items of all shapes and sizes like coin purses, keychains, pillows and journals, among many other items. “The 18-inch American Girl dolls - my daughters make purses

and wallets for those,” Yoder says. “That’s a hit for some people.” There is no denying that Silver Star Leather products are eyecatching. Surprisingly, however, all of the items are extremely durable. “I had a guy here who had a belt that was 10 years old,” Yoder says. “He must have bought it just soon after we got serious about this. He was still wearing it - he needed another hole in it. Ten years old and it was worn, but structurally, you’re looking at another ten years. If you buy them at a box store, they look nice, but if you wear them for a year, they start cracking and fraying. If it’s real, solid leather, there’s nothing to fray. It’s a solid chunk of leather.” Most of the fashion items Yoder makes require minimal maintenance. However, he does carry cleaning wipes and leather oils. As unique as the business is now, Silver Star Leather had humble beginnings as a harness shop that Yoder, who is Amish, purchased in 2006. At that point it was only a part-time job, something for him to do after he came home from his full-time factory job. A few years after purchasing the business, his wife Dorcas decided

to have some fun with a spare piece of leather. “One day we found a piece of leather that I had bought somewhere and it was soft,” Yoder says. “With this piece of leather, she made a purse. It wasn’t terribly impressive, but it was a purse. That’s what got this whole thing started as far as this type of business.” Eventually, Silver Star Leather drifted entirely into the artisan realm and Yoder handled the harness-making side of the business. “In 2012, I went full-time out of the factory,” he says. “Every year is a little bit more.” As time passed, Yoder hired three full-time employees. His daughters, Jennifer and Jody, also work in the shop part time, and both dream about taking over the business some day. Until then, Yoder strives to encourage their love for the creativity and craftsmanship required for the business. “With something like this, it’s important to enjoy it,” Yoder says. 8 TIPS TO CREATE A FUNCTIONAL HOME OFFICE SPACE Writer / Lindsey Thompson Photography Provided
It’s a castle, a sanctuary and a place to rest. It’s where meals are shared and memories are made. Home is a place to sleep, eat and play, but for many, home is also a place to work. According to a survey done by Global Workplace Analytics, the number of people working from home has grown 91% in the last 10 years. As work-from-home jobs become more common, many people are looking for ways to turn their homes into functional working spaces. Fortunately, it doesn’t take a lot of money or a lot of space to create an effective home office.
CHECK YOUR COMPANY’S POLICIES
Before you set up your home office, check to see what costs your company will
cover. Depending on the company, you could get everything from the furniture to the internet covered. Keep receipts for anything that you purchase yourself. The federal government allows taxpayers to take deductions for home offices, whether you’re a homeowner or a renter.
Employees who see clients or colleagues at home should provide comfortable seating for those visitors. Check out Facebook, Craigslist and other web sites for inexpensive options for desks, chairs and office decor.
For an even healthier option, purchase a standing desk and avoid sitting altogether. START WITH THE BASICS Studies have found that sitting too long When putting together a home office, during the day can increase your risk of you’ll want to start with a desk or a table. dementia, diabetes and anxiety, among This is where you’ll spend the majority of other issues. If a standing desk isn’t in your day, so you’ll want to make sure it’s your budget, you can make your own comfortable. Invest in an ergonomic chair using books, or build a simple one with that offers proper lumbar support, or use pillows to create your own lumbar support. inexpensive plywood. Take plenty of breaks during the day to ORGANIZE YOUR SPACE stand up, walk around and stretch your muscles. Be sure your desk has enough room for your computer, as well as your mouse and
THETHE LAKES MAGAZINE 2020 LAKES MAGAZINE/ AUGUST / AUGUST 2020/ thelakesmagazine.com / thelakesmagazine.com/ 37
keyboard if you use those. You’ll also want a spot for pens, pencils, notepads and whatever other office supplies you use on a regular basis. Store these in a desk drawer to keep everything organized. You can also use decorative baskets or boxes to keep things handy and tidy if you don’t have drawers.
CUSTOM HOME AND OFFICE BARNWOOD FURNITURE
To tame all those computer cables, phone chargers and other cords, purchase fabric cord covers or cord storage boxes to keep everything hidden but accessible. Bookshelves provide plenty of additional storage, or use floating shelves if you’re tight on space. Bulletin boards and dry-erase boards don’t take up a lot of space, and give you a spot for notes and important documents.
PICK THE RIGHT SPOT
If you don’t already have a dedicated home office or extra bedroom in your home, find a spot away from traffic and noise if you’re easily distracted. If you thrive on noise and activity, nearly anywhere in your home will make a good home office space. Either way, you’ll want to be sure your office space affords you enough privacy for phone calls or online meetings.

Working on a computer without proper lighting can cause eye strain and headaches. If the space is dark or doesn’t have any windows, find a lamp or two for soft, natural light. It doesn’t hurt to have a window that gives you some natural light, fresh air and a view of something other than your computer screen.
INVEST IN A QUALITY PHONE AND RELIABLE INTERNET CONNECTION Sometimes your company will cover phone and internet costs for your home. If not, check your current packages to be sure you have enough bandwidth to be able to do your job effectively.
PERSONALIZE YOUR SPACE
Make your office space your own with pictures, art and other decorations that inspire you, make you happy and remind you why you’re working in the first place. Put up family photos, paint the room a color you love, or bring in a little of your personal style with window coverings, pillows and rugs.

SET EXPECTATIONS
Once your space is all set up and you’re ready to work from home, set expectations for yourself, your employer and your family. Just because you’re able to work from home doesn’t mean you should be on the clock 24/7. Make time for breaks during the day and set office hours, just as you would when working in an office. Let your family know if your home office is off limits during the workday or if you’ll just need specific times for peace, quiet and privacy.
DON’T REPLACE YOUR ROOF,
RESTORE IT!
SHARING A SPACE
Sometimes more than one person in the household has the opportunity to work from home. You can create two separate work spaces, or create one space that two people can utilize. When sharing an office space, think creatively to maximize space. Instead of two desks, share a large table. Have designated storage areas for each person’s work items and office supplies. If possible, share a printer, fax machine and any other bulky items to save on space. Your home office is where you get business done, but it should also be comfortable so that you actually want to spend time there working. Regardless of your budget or space constraints, you can create a functional home office space with a little creativity and planning.

Local Coffee Shops Provide Plenty of Bang For Your Bean Buck Writer and Photographer / Angela Cornell
Social drinking, despite its common connotation, isn’t limited to alcohol and bars. As any hipster will tell you, it also refers to tea and coffee. There’s a wide variety to choose from in this area, too. Adventurous drinkers are constantly on the lookout for unique flavors and different ways to brew them. The crowning glory of coffee and tea culture is in coffee shops. Each one has its own personality. Although there are many in the area that are definitely worth a visit (there are far too many great options to list here), here are six to check out the next time you crave a hot cup.
1. Culver Coffee Company If you’ve ever wanted to sip a coffee while enjoying lakeside breezes, this is the coffee shop for you. Located directly across from Union Township Park, this shop is easy to find and offers a beautiful view. Plus, it has been open for 17 years, which is extremely long-lived for a cafe. Currently, there is no indoor seating available due to the coronavirus pandemic. They are open daily from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visit them at 634 East Lake Shore Drive in Culver, and at culvercoffeecompany.net. Call 574-842-6326 for more info.
2. Main Street Roasters This shop has a comfortable and timeless feel, reflecting Nappanee’s Amish roots. The main floor has a children’s play area (not currently available due to the coronavirus) where

your little ones can pretend to be baristas in a miniature coffee shop, as well as a gift shop area. Upstairs in the loft, there is a reading nook that is perfect for studying or working. Visit them Mon. through Fri. 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Sat. 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., at 105 North Main Street in Nappanee. For additional details, call 574-773-5333 and go to mainstreetroasters.com.
3. The River Coffeehouse As you drive down Main Street in North Webster, you can’t miss this castle-like building. The cafe has an open concept, making it easy to see the sunken seating area near large picture windows. There is also a seating area outside for those who prefer basking in the sunshine. They are located at 127 North Main Street in North Webster. Hours of operation are Mon. through Fri. 7 a.m to 6 p.m.; Sat. 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Sun. 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call 574-834-1488 and visit therivercoffeehousenw.com for more information.
4. Coffee Lodge and Bakery This coffeehouse combines a laidback country feel with simple elegance. Along with indoor seating, there’s a balcony with a view of Plymouth’s Founders Park. Not only do they offer several menu options, but part of their decor provides an explanation on various styles of coffee (anyone else care to explain the differences between a café au lait, a flat white and a cappuccino?). The menu expounds on the various drink selections, so coffee newbies don’t have to ask what goes into the drink that catches their eye. The Lodge is located at

5. Mug Shots Coffee House and Eatery This farmhouse-style establishment is located just south of Syracuse. Also located in the building is the Man Cave Brewing Company. In too much of a hurry to stop in? No problem - they
have a drive-up service for your convenience. Visit them at 10203 IN-13 in Syracuse. Hours of operation are Mon. through Fri. 5 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Sat. 6 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Sun. 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. To learn more, visit facebook.com/MugShotscoffeehouseandeatery or call 574-337-1307.
6. Three Crowns Coffee This cafe could win an award for uniqueness. Located near Center Lake in Warsaw, it’s located in a remodeled service garage, which gives it a certain indie-modern ambiance. The drinks offered are just as unique as the interior. In addition to typical lattes, singlesource house coffees and teas, there are also special drinks on the menu, like a honey pepper latte and an iced espresso lemonade. It’s located at 941 North Detroit Street in Warsaw, and is open daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. For additional details, visit facebook. com/3crownscoffee or call 574-216-1655.

MULLET CUSTOM INTERIOR CELEBRATES 25TH ANNIVERSARY hard to believe,” Mullet says. “I can’t believe how fast it went.”

construction - because construction is just not my type of work.” Mullet enjoyed making the switch to woodworking. “My father Jonas bought a moulder to make interior wood moldings, and some other small machines to assemble wood doors,” Mullet says. “We started out just part time in 1995, with just some days working in the shop and other days doing construction. I have never regretted doing construction first, because it has helped a lot. It helps us know what our customers’ needs are when they put their orders in.” Mullet decided to purchase the business later. “In 2003 me and my wife Eva bought the business, and have been blessed with good employees over the years,” Mullet says. “We have been able to meet a lot of nice people to do business with.” Mullet also works with other family members. “Two of our sons and two nieces are working here at Mullet Custom Interior,” he says. “We have a great lineup of employees that all want to do their job, and that is what makes a good company. It also makes my job a lot easier when you can depend on them.”

Mullet has a solid business plan that has worked for him through the years. “Our business plan was always to have our customer in mind first, because we deal with a lot of homeowners, contractors and retail customers,” Mullet says. “In 2007, a choice was made to add a 12,000-squarefoot building so we could be more efficient on how we do things, and consolidate more to one building. Before, we were working out of about three small buildings, but we had to start somewhere.” Mullet says his company makes a wide variety of wood products. “We primarily focus on whole interior trim and door packages,” he says. “The people can order whatever style of door or profile of trim they want, and we are happy to make it for them. The stain choices are totally up to each customer, and we will also do custom stain matches if needed. One thing that works good for the customer is that they can let us know that they have a house that needs to be measured for trim. We will then schedule a date and time to come out and measure.” Mullet and his staff work with their clients extensively to make sure each one is happy. “We will make everything from stairway parts to a wide range of hardwood flooring to a choice of doors and trim, and will also help design it,” Mullet says. “We are able to produce hardwood flooring to be exactly what the

customer wants, because we manufacture it and stain it to whatever they want.” Muller says another part of his business is making wood parts for the RV industry. “With two moulders, we are able to keep up with demand at this time, and are thankful for all the work we have,” he says. “Overall, Nappanee is a great community for the working-class people, as there is work out there for everyone.” Mullet is happy life is starting to return to normal despite the effects of the coronavirus outbreak on businesses throughout the state and country. “Even with this COVID-19, I would say that we could still work some more, but we were real glad Governor [Eric] Holcomb opened up things when he did,” Mullet says. “People needed to get back to work, and we were also allowed to have church again, which is very necessary. Since then, we got very busy and everyone is back and working. It looks fairly positive for new homes and RVs.” Visit Mullet Custom Interior at 106 3B Road in Nappanee. WOLF Cooperative Provides Organic Feed and Supplies Writer / Angela Cornell Photography Provided
What you eat directly influences your body. Your immune system in particular is harmed or strengthened by the kinds of food you eat and, by extension, whatever your food consumed before it arrived in your kitchen. That goes for the grain that the chicken ate before it laid the egg you had for breakfast, and the fertilizer and insecticide that the farmer put around the lettuce that you’ll eat on your salad for supper. Organic farmers seek to make a healthy impact by using allnatural ingredients with their animals and crops. Lamar Bontrager, founder of the Wolcottville Organic Livestock Feed (WOLF) Cooperative, was raised to have respect for organic practices. “My father farmed organically, not because there was a market for it but he knew it was a sustainable way of farming,” Bontrager says. When the market started up, I was asked if I would be interested in providing feed. For me, it was a no-brainer.” In 2008, Bontrager expanded his organic feed business into Wolcottville. Within three years, he realized that his growing business was in need of some changes. “I was by myself, running two facilities and about killing myself,” he explains. “The option of making a co-op came up and I was
pretty happy to go that route.” In 2013, WOLF Cooperative was established with a five-farmer board. Now, more than 100 members across Indiana contribute to the feed mill. “We do have other shares that are open to investors outside of farmers,” Bontrager says. “That’s the interest-returning stock.” WOLF Cooperative also has a storefront at its Wolcottville facility. Although the leaders have a few conventional supplies at a Honeyville branch, all the products available at Wolcottville - seeds, regular and custom feed, herbicides, and insecticides among others - are organic. 54 / THE LAKES / AUGUST 2020 / TheLakesMagazine.com
The co-op does more than just sell products off the shelf. “We grind, mix and deliver,” Bontrager says. “Service and quality are the two things we try to focus on. We specialize in servicing the community and being there for the community. Just because you’re a small customer doesn’t mean you won’t be taken care of as well as a big customer.” The co-op also blends liquid and dry fertilizers that are biological and sustainable, based on soil test results. “We blend for everything from a small garden
to large commercial farms,” Bontrager says. Most of the products sold at the co-op have been tried by someone connected with the company. The co-op also blends custom feed for those interested. “We’ll custom blend to what they want,” Bontrager says. “They may want a couple other ingredients that products we blend and keep on the floor may not have.” Despite the co-op’s huge influence, the company has a genuine family feel, thanks to its community focus. “It’s the community working together instead of me selling something to you,” Bontrager says. “It’s more of a working together, familyoriented type thing.” For Bontrager, organic farming is all about sustainability by cultivating healthy soil and animals for the good of the community.
TheLakesMagazine.com / AUGUST 2020 / THE LAKES / 55
“I hope I’m remembered as someone who saw into the health of our people and that what I was doing was to create a sustainable and healthy way of living,” he says. “We are what we eat. Whatever it is that we’re putting on crops and the feed that we’re feeding to our animals, that’s all going to eventually end up in somebody’s stomach. Someone is going to eat that. At the end of the day, I want to feel good about what I did, that I provided a sustainable product that will, in return, provide good health and a good immune system for whoever eats it.” WOLF Cooperative sells feed at eight facilities across a three-state region, and also delivers across the nation. The main co-op branch is located at 109 Union Street in Wolcottville, and can be reached at 260854-9943. Hours of operation are Mon., Wed. and Friday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Tue. and Thu. 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Read more about their products online at wolfco-op.com.

Aquatic Wood Coating Brings Environmentally-Safe Wood Finishes to Michiana Writer / Angela Cornell Photography Provided
Woodworking is an awe-inspiring form of artistry. From the time the craftsman chooses a piece of wood, he has an idea of what he will do with it. Based on that concept, he fashions something unique, whether that’s a table, a lap desk or even kitchenware like a bowl or spoon. After the final nail has been pounded in and the edges have been sanded, the project isn’t done — not until it is finished or coated with paint or a transparent stain that will enhance the woodgrain and add some color. Since the early 1900s, oil-based stains have been widely used, and preferred, by woodworkers around the world. There are
dozens of different natural-looking colors to choose from, from ebony, which is a dark black-brown, to pine, which is a pale beige. Since these stains dry slowly, it has an even look to it. However, oil-based finishes also have drawbacks, like fading over time, being less environmentally-friendly and having odorous fumes that can linger for months after application. Water-based finish is a relatively new kid on the block in the woodworking world. Although it doesn’t provide as much protection from the elements and requires more maintenance, it has plenty of benefits. Water-based coating lasts longer, is much less flammable, dries faster and cleans easier. Aquatic Wood Coating, a business in TheLakesMagazine.com / AUGUST 2020 / THE LAKES / 59
Millersburg, specializes in water-based finishes. “We provide a finishing service and we distribute retail and wholesale exterior and interior paints,” says business owner Lavern Yoder. “What sets us apart from an average finish shop is that we are all water base.” Yoder, who was in the furniture coating business for 16 years before starting Aquatic Wood Coating, was made aware of waterbased options when the environmental movement gained momentum in the 2000s and 2010s. “I knew that water-bases were going to be coming in,” Yoder says.
After exploring his options, he decided to partner with Dave Bontrager and Anthony Yoder to start a business that would only sell water-based products. “We have basically no VOC, no formaldehyde, no cyanide, no bad
chemicals that are in your regular coatings,” Lavern says. Since water-based stains are free from those toxic chemicals, they do not outgas like oilbased finishes.

“Our mission, our goal is to give people a nice finish with no smell and without having nose burn and eye burn when they get their piece of furniture or kitchen cabinet,” Yoder says. On top of that, water-base and oil-base
stains have the same color variety. As an added bonus, water-based coatings don’t yellow over time.

“They may have a different touch and feel to it,” Yoder says. “As far as the color itself, if you see a nice stain you want at [a big box store], we can match that stain color.”

“That’s a service we provide. We can do any stain, paint, or specialty finishing,” Yoder adds. “[Customers] can get furniture or anything finished.” If the project is too large to be brought to the workshop, Yoder is partnered with contractors who can coat the project on-site. For DIYers, Aquatic Wood Coating offers a wide variety of finishes for interior and exterior use. “They’re good for cabins, porches, fences — any kind of exterior furniture. The interior house paints have just the regular — latex house paints, primer, and house paints,” he says. “If we don’t have it, we have resources where we can get it or they can buy direct.”

They also have a paint sprayer available to rent for those customers with larger projects. Interacting with a satisfied customer is Yoder’s favorite part of the job. “If they walk into their house and there’s no smell — from either the kitchen cabinets or the furniture — I like to see the smile on their face,” he says. “I like it when a customer comes to me and explains what they are looking for and I want to give them everything they are looking for.” Aquatic Wood Coating’s storefront is located at 10120 W. 500 S., Millersburg and they are open between 6:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Monday-Friday or by appointment. To connect with the business to get your project finished or to see the furniture they sell, call them at 260-593-0145 for more information.

Local Shop Has Quilt Customers Covered Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Lana King
For more than 25 years, visitors to Middlebury’s Das Dutchman Essenhaus campus have enjoyed viewing beautiful quilts and gifts, as well as quilting supplies available at The Quilt Shop. The shop is celebrating its one-year anniversary of residing in the complex’s white barn. The move to the building not only doubled the space available, but also allows owner Susan Garberick the opportunity build relationships with local quilters by offering clubs and classes. “My interest in quilting started in the ‘70s when I was newly married,” she says. “My husband’s grandma gave me a double wedding ring quilt as a wedding present. In 1976, there was a resurgence in quilting due to the Bicentennial. I started out sewing a Lone Star baby quilt by hand when I was expecting. I had the opportunity to open a little 400-square-foot shop at Southgate Crossing. I had it for five months when I heard that The Quilt Shop at Essenhaus was for sale. I became the new owner on January 1, 2017, and it has been fantastic.” When visitors enter the first floor of The Quilt Shop, they not only see around 100 quilts for sale, but also other handcrafted items. The handmade quilts are priced from $1,000 to $2,000 and typically represent an entire year’s work for an Amish woman. Clothes suitable for American Girl dolls are available, including Amish doll clothing and head coverings. In addition, there is a multitude of wall hangings, table runners, quilt kits, patterns and lots of colorful fabric. “An Amish man supplies us with wooden items such as candy dispensers and trivets,” Garberick says. “He made a wooden quilt out of different colored woods that was sold the day he brought it in. We also sell painted barn quilts, and 64 / THE LAKES / AUGUST 2020 / TheLakesMagazine.com

a producer of long-arm sewing machines. The shop also offers sewing machine service and repair. Local quilters appreciate the opportunities for fellowship that The Quilt Shop provides. Quilters can participate in Thursday “Sit and Sew” events by calling ahead to reserve a table. The event provides an opportunity get questions answered while sewing with others. The Block of the Month Club meets on the second Thursday of each month. “Last year was our biggest year ever,” Garberick says. “When I bought the shop, I came in with the mindset that in the first year I would learn about the business. It is a destination shop that attracts tourists, but I wanted to build a relationship with the local customers too. It’s a nice experience to come to Das Dutchman Essenhaus.” The Quilt Shop at Essenhaus is located at 240 US Highway 20 in Middlebury. Call 800-455-9471 and visit essenhausquiltshop.com for more info.

he Lakes Magazine is a free publication mailed every month to great demographic homeowners. Our audience is more than 80% year-round homeowners, plus the second home and weekend vacation homeowner crowd. This is the second publication we have and it is new to your area. Our other Lakes Magazine is mailed plus read online in the Marshall / Fulton county region. The Lakes is a local regional content magazine that becomes a valuable resource in every area we send them. Since the internet trended in popularity years ago a true content magazine is the only thing in print that has actually gone up in use while the phonebooks, coupon-based publications, newspapers, auto and real estate circulars, have drastically shrunk and gone way down in use. In addition to our printed magazine, we have a strong presence on social media, and our magazines are also available, free, online when you go to the App Store or Google Play to download our free app. Here at The Lakes Magazine, we take pride in promoting positive news and historical content. Many of the advertisers that have reached out to us have been in business many years but have never advertised before. Today, we have a nice collective gathering of the region’s best word-of-mouth businesses. The Lakes Magazine, overall, reaches 75,000-plus that will look here for businesses and services to patronize hyper-locally. We cannot accept all new advertisement requests, but we do have openings for certain types of trades and businesses. For all inquiries email us at John@townepost.com or call (574) 2499217.
