YE OLDE TACKLE BOX POPULAR FISHING SHOP IS A LOCAL FAVORITE Writer / Mary Lowry Photographer / Lana King

As the largest tackle shop in Indiana, Ye Olde Tackle Box has been a staple in the North Webster community since it first opened its doors in 1958. Popular from the very start, it continues to thrive today under the ownership of Joe Denton. Denton first took over at Ye Olde Tackle Box in February of 2019. He had been injured at his previous job, and things there were not going the way he had hoped, so Denton purchased the business from a friend. It was a natural fit for Denton, as he loves to spend time outside and in nature.

“I’m an outdoors freak, I guess you could say,” Denton says. “I love hunting, fishing, anything to do with the outdoors.” Denton’s love for what he does shines through in the customer service provided to Ye Olde Tackle Box’s patrons. He and his team fill their 11,000 square-foot space with all sorts of high quality products for people to select from. “I have people come in all the time and they’re amazed at how big the store is,” Denton says. “And all but 2,500 square feet of it have tackle.” In addition to being Indiana’s largest tackle store, Ye Olde Tackle Box holds another record — they are the largest musky 6 / THE LAKES / JUNE 2020 / TheLakesMagazine.com

tackle dealership in the area. From Musky Innovations to Musky Mayhem to Red October baits, you are sure to find what you are looking for. Ye Olde Tackle Box provides products for more than just musky fishing, though. With more than 100 lakes in Kosciusko County, customers can also find tackle for panfish, bass and pike. Denton’s store carries the largest selection of Zoom and Yamamoto soft plastic baits for those interested in bass fishing. If it’s a rod you’re looking for, you will find just as much variety with your options as you would with the tackle. Ye Olde Tackle Box carries rods for panfish all the way up to musky rods, plus open and closed-face reels.

All high-quality brands, you are certain to find something to fit your needs. The store also offers the necessities for fly fishing, including rods, reels, flies and fly tying equipment. Despite Denton’s love of the outdoors, his favorite part of the business is undoubtedly the customers. He loves interacting with them, answering their questions and helping them pick out the best products. “Through this [coronavirus], my customers have been awesome,” Denton says. “I’d like to give a big shoutout to my customers because they’ve helped support me through all of this.” Ye Olde Tackle Box is located at 708 South Main Street in North Webster. To learn more, visit them online at yeoldetacklebox. net. Patrons are asked to call the store at 574-834-2011 with questions or for current information on water, weather and fishing conditions. Tiffany’s Restaurant

Owner Fritz Helmuth

Local Eatery Still Serving Fresh, Homestyle Cuisine After More Than 30 Years Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided

Fritz Helmuth, owner of Tiffany’s Restaurant in Topeka, firmly believes many people have become better individuals during the coronavirus pandemic. “I’ve heard a lot of people tell me they are going to make something good out of this,” Helmuth says. “I’ve seen people being kind to each other, and we have all figured out how to do things differently. I tell them to keep your faith, and try to take advantage of this time to work on something you [previously] didn’t have time for.”

Helmuth has used the time to figure out a plan for catering at Tiffany’s. “It’s something I’ve really wanted to do, and this time has allowed me to really plan ahead,” he says. “I’ve seen other business owners and families in Topeka working on projects they put off, or finding more time to help each other.”

YOU DREAM IT. WE BUILD IT. IT’S THAT SIMPLE. Fine Custom Cabinetry for Your Kitchen, Bath or Office

Helmuth, who was born and raised in Topeka, has high praise for Topeka’s residents. “They have kept my restaurant going since I opened,” Helmuth says. “When I started Tiffany’s, it was just a sandwich shop that seated 58 people. It was previously Anita’s Drive-In. You could just get sandwiches and fries.” Helmuth also owns S&H Metal Products Inc., a leading custom sheet metal fabricator in Topeka, and Freedom Finish Works, a subsidiary of S&H Metal also located in Topeka. “I like keeping busy,” he says. “I have a great, friendly staff at Tiffany’s that takes care of all the day-to-day restaurant operations.” Helmuth and his wife Tina bought Anita’s Drive-In from Larry and Anita Christner, and named the restaurant after his youngest daughter Tiffany. “We opened on June 4, 1987, on Tiffany’s fourth birthday, and we have been growing ever since,” Helmuth says. He expanded Tiffany’s in 1992 to accommodate more guests.

“We made the restaurant bigger, and added a lot more room so we could have 194 seats,” Helmuth says. “It really made a big difference, and we started serving a lot more different types of homestyle meals.” At that point Helmuth added mashed potatoes, chicken, gravy, noodles, bean salad, vegetables and many other tasty items to the menu.

Terry Miller

“We have become well known for our freshbaked pies and large list of different tossed salads,” Helmuth says. “We have had a lot of people come back because they love the food.” Customer favorites include the prime rib, roasted chicken and roast beef. The cheeseburgers and chicken sandwiches are also a big hit. “Our delicious ribs, fish, pasta salads, potato salads and soups are also very popular here,” Helmuth says. “We have the best potato soup in the world. Our deserts are also real good. We have cake, puddings, soft-serve ice cream and dipped ice cream, which we just started.” Helmuth says Tiffany’s pasta salad, potato salad, cheeseburger chowder and chicken noodle soup have also gained a strong following. “Our chili soup is so good we had a guy sneak some out,” Helmuth says. “He came

in wearing a long trench coat. The waitresses asked if he needed anything. He said no. He was just looking. Everyone went back to what they were doing, and he made his way to the salad bar, filled his thermos with chili soup, and left. I took it as a compliment that he liked the soup so much. I would have given him some to take home with him.” During the month of April, Tiffany’s gave out free meals to local school children, and gave free

food to the doctors and nurses at Parkview LaGrange Hospital. “People have really supported us during this time, and kept us going,” Helmuth says. Tiffany’s Restaurant is located at 414 East Lake Street in Topeka. Current hours of operation for take-out orders are Mon. through Sat. 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information, call 260-593-2988 or visit tiffanystopeka.com.

The BoatHouse Restaurant Celebrates a Milestone Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Lana King

Known for its stunning view of Winona Lake, the BoatHouse Restaurant will officially turn 20 this October. The eatery is a favorite with students and faculty from nearby Grace College, local families, and summertime

boaters. Throughout the years it has adapted with the times, and responded to the needs and desires of customers. Co-owned by Peter Christos and Kyle Phelps, the restaurant maintains an upscale yet casual atmosphere. In 2012 a small lounge area was transformed

The menu features items that can be adapted for those with dairy or gluten allergies. Several dishes served are suitable for vegetarians. Recently the restaurant’s leaders responded to customer requests and reopened for takeout amid the many coronavirus-related closures.

“When we were first notified about the dinein closures due to COVID-19, we decided to shut the restaurant down completely,” Phelps says. “After two weeks of lots of inquiries, we decided to open for takeout with a smaller temporary menu. We are offering a free 12-ounce bowl of soup with each adult entree, and 50% off of our bottled beer and wine. We have been utilizing gloves and masks where appropriate, and taking

Phelps says the eatery brings in a wide array of customers. “We are first and foremost a family restaurant, so we get a lot of families with children and we do offer a children’s menu,” he says. “We also get a large amount of people in their twenties in our bar, especially on the weekends. During proms and dances we serve many high-

school-aged students. Since we are about a ten-minute walk from Grace College, we get many students and faculty from there. We also have an older crowd. There is something for everyone. Customers know us for our value, due to large portions and the right prices.” Phelps adds that he and his staff strive to provide a welcoming, clean environment for all guests. “It’s hard for people to come to our restaurant and not find something on the menu that they like,” he says. “We aim to provide outstanding customer service, and hope to have all of our guests leave happy.” The BoatHouse Restaurant is located at 700 Park Avenue in Winona Lake. Moore & Moore Excavating Offers Quality Work and Reliable Customer Service Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided

David Moore, owner of Moore & Moore Excavating in Cromwell, says high-quality work and great customer service are the keys to any long-running, successful business. “We used to run a yellow pages ad, but I recently cancelled it because we didn’t need it anymore,” Moore says. “We have reached a point where our positive word of mouth from satisfied customers has really helped us get more business. That’s really a great place to be.” Moore & Moore Excavating was founded

by Moore’s father Gearold in 1971. “We have done a lot of concrete work,” Moore says. “We really do a lot of excavating work, and we do great seawalls.” Moore notes that customers have largely been happy with his company’s tree removal, foundation and driveway work.

completed a great deal of work on septic tanks. “A lot of times the problem with a septic tank is the filter bed,” Moore says. “We can put in a new one, and take care of everything.” Moore says his staff has also constructed rock walls by hand.

“We have also received repeat business on dirt gravel work and top-dirt fill,” he says. “We pay attention to everything to make sure it is done right.”

“It’s hard work,” he says. “It’s also very rewarding, and we do a good job. We do our best all the time, and that’s how we have been able to have a good livelihood.”

The Moore & Moore staff has also

for as long as he can remember. “My dad was a semi-truck driver before he started Moore & Moore Excavating, and he has loved this business,” Moore says. “He has really gotten to know the community, and we have made sure our work was high quality so people would tell their family and friends to use us.” The Moore family initially moved to the Cromwell area to make pontoon boats. “A lot of the family, including two of my brothers, moved to this area because there are a lot of lakes in the area, and we thought this would be great for a pontoon boat business,” Moore says. “We got out of that and went into excavating.” Moore says he and his family appreciate the residents in Cromwell. “There are a lot of really good people to work with here,” Moore says. “People help each other out, they are very nice, and they appreciate the work we do.” Moore says Moore & Moore Excavating has not been impacted by the coronavirus outbreak that hit the U.S. starting earlier this year. “We work by ourselves so much, and we are outside all of the time, so it really hasn’t made a difference,” Moore says. Moore & Moore Excavating is located at 9787 East 1050 North in Cromwell. You can give them a call at 574-518-2224.

Green Oak Antiques is a fun place to shop — a girl’s-day-out kind of place. There are three buildings full of old, new and salvage items backdropped by a beautiful country setting right outside Rochester. These

buildings are filled with a variety of items, perfect for collectors and home decorators alike. Ann and Steve Furnivall started the business in 1978. At first, they exclusively sold antiques. Their children, Jon and Julie, grew up with the business and eventually

joined the team. Jon’s wife, Terri, also came on board as the company’s techie. “We just sold out of our house at first,” Furnivall says. “Now we’ve got a 10,000 square-foot store.” Over time, the business became a

destination for curio shoppers as well as antique collectors. “People come from a hundred miles — even 200 miles, sometimes,” she says. After 20 years of selling antiques, they decided to include other kinds of home décor items to appeal to the changes in the market, which included home decorators of all ages.

Eventually, they also expanded into other kinds of styles — like farmhouse, vintage, boho, country and fancy. In time, Green Oak also carried garden décor, such as gazebos, planters, arches, garden furniture and more. Nonetheless, they still offer a wide range of vintage and antique items. Green Oak is particularly known for its exclusive furniture. They offer 200 different pieces, all of which were designed

which combines the classy old-fashioned look and newer, minimalist expressions of style. “We have new and old,” Furnivall says. “We really try to have a high-end look at reasonable prices.” Even though they specialize in the farmhouse style, they offer a wide range of other designs as well. “We really appeal to adventurous women,” Furnivall adds. “Our best customers are homeowners who want something neat and different. HAMMERING AWAY Jayh Construction Offers Quality Home Renovation Services Writer / Tracey Ruckman Photographer / Lana King

Aaron Jay Miller and his brother, Elmer H. Miller grew up on their family’s small, rural farm. When they were finished with school they began working construction jobs to help supplement the family income. Eventually, they were lead to the RV industry for employment, but they never lost sight of their dream to have their own construction business. When the recession happened in 2007-2008, the RV industry slowed significantly. The brothers went back to what they knew and began picking up construction gigs here and there to keep

their family finances afloat. Aaron and his wife Ida, had five children to support, and Elmer and his wife Linda, had five children as well. “One thing led to another and finally we decided to run some ads and see what kind of response we got,” Aaron says. “In the spring of 2009, I took a voluntary layoff from the RV industry and jumped out of the pan and into the fire. My goal at that point was to have enough work for the two of us, a driver and work for my sons when they got older.” Aaron and Elmer’s dream became a reality and Jayh [pronounced JH] Construction was born. The brothers and business partners derived the name from their

combined middle initials and, 11 years later, Jayh Construction is still hammering away. “We started out doing anything we could get, but roofing and remodeling are what got us going,” Aaron says. Interior trim work, cabinet installs and windows and doors, followed suit, and, before they knew it, the brothers had built their first new home from start to finish within three years of starting the business. “One thing I really enjoy as a business owner is all the great people we get to know and the great friendships that come with that,” Aaron adds. “It’s a great feeling knowing that I’ve contributed to my customers and employees in a positive way. It’s very rewarding to help someone select quality products and see their dreams come true.” Jayh Construction prides itself on quality work at an affordable price. “If it’s worth doing - do it right the first time,” Aaron says. The Miller brothers share the responsibilities of the business and have 12 full-time employees. Aaron takes all customer calls, provides the quotes and estimates and supplies the material lists and material orders. He also handles the office responsibilities. Elmer is the project manager. He meets with the customers, finds out what they need, takes measurements and follows up a second time to review the plans and set a schedule. THE LAKES MAGAZINE / JUNE 2020 / thelakesmagazine.com

There are three crews lead by Duane, Steve and Lamar. They are all well versed in their skills and help each other out when needed. “I’m blessed to have such great employees, I couldn’t do it without them,” Aaron says. Jayh Construction can do any type of roofing a customer needs and the business is a certified installer for GAF shingles. Shingles are the primary roof material used, but Jayh also offers standing seam metal roofing and EcoStar roofing, which is made from recycled plastic.

Midwest Farm and Pet Bremen Pet Supplies Store Celebrates 10th Anniversary Writer / Mary Lowry Photographer / Lana King

Lonnie Borkholder has been the proud owner of Midwest Farm and Pet in Bremen since he first opened it in 2010. He and his employees work hard to make sure that they are helping their customers and the community achieve success. The business started as a way to spend more time with his family. Borkholder left his job in an RV factory to open his own business. “I wanted to do something at home with my family and have something that I could possibly pass on to my children that’s a sustainable business,” Borkholder says.

Another inspiration to start Midwest Farm and Pet was a way to reinvest in the community. Animal feed and pet supplies seemed to be missing in Bremen, so Borkholder decided to open his store as an asset to the community. He also believes that every child should have an animal while growing up, and by opening his store, he could help promote that practice. “Having [a pet] and having chores makes a more responsible adult,” he says. Midwest Farm and Pet has served the community well in its past 10 years. They fill all kinds of animal and agricultural needs, offering customers animal feed, animal health care products, pasture seeds, lawn seeds and fertilizer. They also provide animal vaccines. Borkholder says that they also carry quite a bit of supplies for deer hunting, like hunting blinds. The store is recognized as a local Purina dealer, meaning they have a vast selection of Purina food and supplements for your animals. They carry Purina’s full line of Honor Show, their High Octane line and more. The employees at Midwest Farm and Pet are knowledgeable about the various lines and enjoy answering whatever questions customers may have. What really sets the business apart, though, is its equine

supplies and kennel products. Customers can find quality dewormers, dog food and kennels for their pets. Borkholder shares that his business is truly unique for its equine and dog knowledge. “We have our own horse breeding farm and our own kennel, so we can help people from our own experience on what works best,” he says. “It’s the expertise of not just selling feed, but we can go in and help them with other issues they’re experiencing. We’re not just here to sell you feed, we’re here to help you be successful.” That desire to help customers be successful extends to the larger community of Bremen. Borkholder enjoys giving back to the community as often as he can. While Midwest Farm and Pet does not hold specific fundraisers for causes, Borkholder and his team try to show goodwill toward individual families who may be struggling. His help on a local level tends to focus on one-on-one interactions with people. “We recognize that all of our blessings come from the community, so we want to give back to them,” Borkholder says. “We value and appreciate our customers, without them, [Midwest Farm and Pet] wouldn’t be possible.”

Midwest Farm and Pet would also not be as successful without its dedicated employees. Borkholder has five employees who care about the customers just as much as he does. The structure of the company is different from a typical corporate business. People are able to work in an environment that emphasizes good, community-based values. “We create a better working environment for people. They can make a living where there are Christian and family values,” Borkholder says. “We try to treat everybody the way they want to be treated. [We value] fairness, honesty and trustworthiness, those are the main three.” Having an enjoyable workplace environment makes all the difference in employees’ lives. Borkholder abides by the notion that if you do something you love, you will never work a day in your life. “I tell people that I retired at 27 years old,” he says. You can learn more about Midwest Farm and Pet on their Facebook page, Midwest Farm and Pet. It is open from 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Thursday, from 8 am to 4 pm on Friday, and from 8 am to 12 pm on Saturday. Midwest Farm and Pet is located at 535 5B Road in Bremen. Local Bike Shop Offers Diverse Products and Comprehensive Repairs

Writer / Angela Cornell Photographer / Jubilee Edgell

According to leading bicycle experts, there are between one and two billion bicycles in the world, and about 47,600 are sold daily. That’s about one bike every two seconds. Marlin Hochstetler, owner of Triple Oak Sales, contributes to that number as he sells and maintains bikes at his shop outside of Nappanee. For him, bicycles have always been a part of life. “I’m Amish, so with my culture I grew up riding bikes,” Hochstetler says. However, the inspiration for opening his own bike shop came from a store in Nappanee called Fox’s Bike Shop. “As a small boy, I’d go with my dad uptown and he’d stop at this bike shop, and he’d buy parts to repair or maintenance his own bike at home,” Hochstetler says. “We had a bicycle stand, and tools and such to go with it. As him and old man Fox were

talking, I would wander around the shop and always dream of having this kind of business on my own.” That dream became a reality in 2018 when Hochstetler was given the opportunity to purchase a local bicycle business. He reopened it outside Nappanee and renamed it Triple Oak Sales, specializing in bicycle sales and service. “This is a family business,” he says. “It’s myself and the boys. And my wife - she’s kind of my secretary.” Hochstetler learned how to repair bikes from his father. “He was a do-it-yourselfer,” Hochstetler says of his dad. “He taught us boys at home how to be mechanically minded and not be afraid to tear into things.” Over time, Hochstetler became an expert in bicycle repair and maintenance.

“I do anything - I will change tires, fix flats, fix broken chains, and I’ll true wheels,” he says. “I’ll replace bearings in wheels. I’ll do complete overhauls. I’ll help you try to customize your bicycle to fit your needs.” Repairs is one of Hochstetler’s favorite parts of his bike business, especially when a job is particularly challenging. “A person brings it into the shop and says, ‘I’ve taken this bike to numerous different shops and it hasn’t worked right since, and it doesn’t ride well,’” he says. “And then they take it out for a ride after I’m done with it and I can see in their eyes and hear it in their voice that they’re well pleased. That’s worth more to me than the little paycheck that I get. I want to do the best I can with my God-given abilities to do a service to the community, and I guess make a small living while I’m at it.” Along with maintenance and repairs, Triple Oak Sales offers a wide variety of parts,

As he looks toward the future, Hochstetler hopes to eventually work full-time at the bike shop. He also expects that bicycle culture will change dramatically with the introduction of the electric bike into the market. One aspect of the business that he hopes will remain is the ability to interact with customers.

“The most important thing I enjoy about the business is getting to know the people,” Hochstetler says. “If they want to stop and talk, great. I don’t mind if people just want to sit here and talk. I have time for that. If some people want to have their bicycle fixed, I’ll do that too.” Triple Oak Sales is located at 7134 W. 1300 North in Nappanee. Parenting During COVID-19 6 Essential Tips For Parents At Home With Kiddos Writer/ Abigail Hake Photography Provided

Most of us are finding an unlimited amount of time on our hands during these fairly uncertain times. While it can be a stressful time for many of us, especially parents, we will all get through it and have memories to last a lifetime. Let’s hope that these few survival tips can cut down on stress and also bring a few more smiles into your life while we all stay safe at home.

the walkways with some art. The best thing about chalk though is that it can go so many different directions…get creative! Draw up inspiring messages, create something giant that takes over entire driveways or cul-de-sacs, make up extra-large game boards, or even create art galleries! The possibilities are endless and remember, adults can have fun with chalk too. And, if you have a ton of chalk, share with your neighbors by leaving a piece on their doorstep and ask them to get in on the fun too!

3. Participate in a Challenge

1. Disney+ If you don’t have it, sign up now. It’s super affordable and gives you access to the entire Disney movie library, which you are going to need because the days are very, very long and screen time rules flew out the window weeks ago. Old movies are fun to share with your kids so maybe try to get them to sit down and watch Swiss Family Robinson (a personal fave yet I still can’t get my child to watch the whole thing) or hunker down and watch all the Star Wars one after another or have a Marvel movie marathon.

There are lots of social media and viral challenges out there and while I’m not a huge tech fan, the social aspect of it has given way to some really creative things happening. Maybe do a lip sync challenge video with your entire family, try the garage door challenge (if you are needing a drink and a great laugh), or participate in the plank or push up challenge. You can even come up with your own challenge if you are really feeling creative! Whatever you choose, make sure to nominate another family to try it after you do!

2. Chalk

4. One-on-One Time.

Time to start hoarding sidewalk chalk. As the weather begins to show more signs of spring, more people will be out walking soon and with limited paths available during this time, why not sass up

With us all having quite a few extra moments hanging at our homes these days, we are typically all up in each other’s business. But now is the time to make sure to carve out a little one-on-one time with

THE LAKES MAGAZINE / JUNE 2020 / thelakesmagazine.com

your loved ones if you can. About 15 minutes here and there can go a long way. Spend it snuggling in the morning before rolling out of bed if you have early risers, playing a video game, or going on a walk. It’s also important to keep in mind that as adults you might need to find some alone time too. It feels like there are really no breaks during this crazy time, so no judgment if that is time spent hiding in the bathroom.

5. Talent Shows We all have hidden talents, like knowing the entire rap portion of TLC’s Waterfalls song or spinning a basketball on our finger for way longer than normal. Whatever your hidden talent, it’s time to let that cat out of the bag and show off your skills! Gather your immediate family and each share your talents one by one in the living room or make it a family challenge and invite other families and friends to participate in a virtual event! By utilizing the amazing social tools out there like FaceTime or Zoom, the possibilities are endless!

6. Wine Delivery You are gonna need it. Pick a local winery and you will probably be happily surprised to find out they are delivering during this time! While I don’t encourage drinking in excess, the days can be really

quite emotionally draining and a cocktail hour once a week (or every day - you choose) isn’t going to hurt anyone! There are also quite a few Mexican restaurants selling their non-alcoholic margarita mix on their takeout menus now too. Who doesn’t need a Margarita Monday (or Tuesday & Wednesday too)? It’s ok, we get it. After this, we’ll all be drinking Ina Garten style, and if you don’t know what this is referring to, Google it. Remember, this is a special time we’ve been given to slow down and reconnect. Make sure to take it all in. Stay in bed a little longer, try to read that book you’ve been meaning to finish or try a new recipe you’ve been meaning to make. Whatever you do, make sure to check in on friends and family, especially those who are stuck home during this time alone. Some of you were maybe meant for these moments, but for others, this is a real challenge. Thankfully, we are able to still stay connected with technology. Whatever you do to get through this time staying safe at home, cherish it. Remember this too shall pass.

aving operated an auto service center for 15 years, and having worked in the auto industry for nearly 25, Leonard Mast has a refreshingly simple answer for what keeps him motivated to be the best he can be in his chosen profession. “I love solving problems,” he says. “Any mechanic that’s successful loves solving problems. It’s not fun for a customer to have a breakdown, but we love solving the problem and I think that’s what drives us.” Born and raised in the Etna Green area, Mast was tinkering with automobiles on his family’s dairy farm at a very young age. “As a little kid I would tear stuff apart and seldom get it back together,” Mast says laughing. “I found out early on that I liked digging into stuff and trying to find out what was going on and solving the problem or issue.”

Center in Etna Green, Mast worked for an auto fleet company for nine years, troubleshooting and repairing trucks, trailers, forklifts and other equipment. During that time, he slowly began accumulating a list of clients who would request service on their automobiles, and eventually, Mast got the itch to strike out on his own. “By around 2005, I had a client base of people who wanted me to work on issues they had, and since I had that nine years of good experience, I stepped out and started doing it on my own,” Mast says. “We started out small and it was just me and one other guy, and by 2009 we branched out to a second location. After that, we came full circle and went back to just one location at the beginning of 2019. We built our facility to be able to bring all of our employees together and do all of our work under one roof.”

It didn’t take long for a young Mast to begin cultivating a dream of one day owning his own auto service shop. “When I was on the dairy farm, I did a lot of diesel rebuilds for my dad, and that’s really how I started out,” he says. “When you start out learning by doing like I did, I

think that’s a really good foundation for an auto education if you will. Since then, I’ve done everything from home automotive courses to night school, and our training at the service center is ongoing throughout the year.” Prior to officially opening Mast Service

Mast Service Center offers both fleet and general auto service, with a current staff of 12. The six bays on the facility’s east side are dedicated to general automotive service for cars, trucks and vans - including service for brakes, air conditioning, oil and filter changes, alignments, transmissions and more, and the area on the building’s opposite side is devoted to fleet service. The center offers a pickup and drop-off service for local passenger vehicles. Mast says the biggest challenge for servicing fleets is completing repairs as

We cover the whole vehicle everything except body repair.” Mast adds that staying informed on, and equipped with, the most optimal technology for servicing a wide range of vehicles presents another ongoing challenge. “Changes and upgrades in technology is a big challenge, and we invest between $2,000 and $3,000 a month for subscriptions to have technology and vehicle information,” he says. “They say most automotive shops and after-market shops are somewhere around $150,000 behind in equipment and technology.” Mast says the key to his company’s steady growth over the past 15 years has been an unyielding focus on customer care, as well as a high priority on valuing each and every employee. “Other than in 2013, we’ve had growth every year and we continue to grow,” he says. “We do our best to take care of everybody that comes in. We try to be a blessing to our community and a blessing to our employees. I believe growth will always continue if you keep that in mind. We fix cars and take care of customers’ issues, but our number-one goal is to build relationships.”

FOR FARM & HOME Michiana Sales and Service Offers Commercial Poultry & Livestock Barns

Writer / Angela Cornell Photographer / Jubilee Edgell

Amish-owned Michiana Sales and Service started with a single chicken barn, built by Jay Graber in the mid-1990s. “He was one of the first growers in the area for Miller Poultry,” Graber’s son Jay Dee explains. As more and more people began requesting chicken barns from the Grabers, Jay and his wife Luetta decided to go into business

for themselves. Their goal was to provide a valuable service by offering housing for hogs, poultry and cattle for local farmers, and servicing those buildings as needed. In time, the company was able to expand their service area over a multi-state region. Jay Dee has been involved with the business since childhood, and joined on a full-time basis in 2014 to help establish the company in Middlebury. “Most people don’t know we exist,” says Jay 60 / THE LAKES / JUNE 2020 / TheLakesMagazine.com

Dee, who serves as the company’s general manager. Although most of the company’s products are for livestock and poultry farmers, it has become a Sears and Roebuck catalog of sorts for country folks. “Our vision was having something for everyone,” Jay Dee says. The company’s wide variety and dedication to quality is reflected in the store slogan:

“A quilt of quality products for farm and home.” Along with livestock and poultry housing options, and other outbuildings such as greenhouses, the company also sells livestock farming equipment, hardware, electrical tools and supplies, home goods like kitchenware, outdoor cooking equipment and toys, as well as a wide variety of lawn and garden tools. “If we don’t have it in stock, we’ll find it for you,” Jay Dee says. “We love to help you find specialty items.” The way Jay Dee chooses the company’s products is fairly unique. A farmer in his own right, Jay Dee understands the importance of believing in his products. “I don’t just stock a product - I’ll buy it and use it myself,” he says. “I like to know what I’m trying to sell here.” The employees at the store, most of whom

Although the retail side of the business has continued to grow, the services the company provides haven’t slowed at all.

As Jay Dee looks to the future, he hopes to see the business expand to include more products and even a showroom for wouldbe farmers.

“The bulk of our work is installing equipment,” Jay Dee says. “We do electrical and solar, installing those systems for the

Pedals & Paddles Local Shop Offers Products and Service for Bike and Paddlesports Enthusiasts

Owner Steve Huffman Writer / Tracey Ruckman Photographer / Lana King

Steve Huffman’s main goal is happy customers. As owner of Pedals & Paddles, the North Webster resident knows the feeling of freedom that a bike ride or paddle through an Indiana waterway can bring. Huffman grew up at Fisherman Cove Resort on Webster Lake, and next

door was The Dixie, Indiana’s oldest sternwheeler excursion boat. Owned by his uncle, Tag Huffman, he spent his youth on the boat and was the captain during his college years. “I was fresh out of college with a computer science degree when I began working for a CAD software reseller in Syracuse,” Huffman says. “During that time I developed a business partnership with a

fellow programmer and we wrote our own software.” Eventually he bought his partner’s share of the business and became the sole owner of Draftware, Inc. Huffman then moved to southern Indiana, near Madison, and purchased property on the Ohio River. When a 1923 paddlewheel boat larger than the Dixie was for sale, he couldn’t pass up the opportunity to purchase and operate it. The boat was so large that he had to get a Coast Guard license to operate it. During his time in Madison, Huffman met his wife Barbara. The couple moved back to northern Indiana in 2016 and bought a home on the Tippecanoe River. Huffman was ready for a change, and his love of cycling and a history rooted in paddlesports propelled him into motion. The result? A new business for the North

Webster and lakes community to enjoy. Pedals & Paddles is a cycling and paddlesports outfitter known for quality brands and a wide assortment of accessories. “I opened the store to give people in the lakes area a convenient option for bike and paddlesports sales and service,” he says. Huffman enjoys helping customers and giving advice on the recreational equipment they are looking for. The store houses Trek, Electra and Sun bike brands, along with Old Town canoes and kayaks, Ocean and Hobie kayaks, as well as Rave Sports and Hobie paddleboards. The shop also carries Hobie pedalboards and is the exclusive dealer for the north-central Indiana lakes area. “Hobie’s Mirage Eclipse is a stand-up paddleboard with handlebars,” Huffman

The shop has a wide array of bikes to suit multiple riding styles and help with various customer needs. Comfort, road, gravel, mountain, hybrid, cruiser and child bikes are available, along with specialty styles like electric bikes, tandems, trikes and recumbents. If a specific color or model is requested, Huffman is happy to assist with special orders. Pedals & Paddles offers a bike service and repair shop, used equipment for purchase or trade, layaway options, consignment and financing options for new purchases, as well as bike, board and kayak rental with delivery. For bike repair, Pedals & Paddles can fix specific issues, handle general tuneups and do complete rebuilds. The staff works on all brands. Huffman has always tinkered with bicycles, and gained an appreciation for bike repair and maintenance by slowly learning on his own throughout the years. “I put over 4,000 miles on one of my bikes and it was falling apart,” he says. “This was before YouTube, so I had to learn how to overhaul the bearings myself.” Pedals & Paddles is located at 105 East Esterbrook Drive in North Webster. he Lakes Magazine is a free publication mailed every month to great demographic homeowners. Our audience is more than 80% year-round homeowners, plus the second home and weekend vacation homeowner crowd. This is the second publication we have and it is new to your area. Our other Lakes Magazine is mailed plus read online in the Marshall / Fulton county region. The Lakes is a local regional content magazine that becomes a valuable resource in every area we send them. Since the internet trended in popularity years ago a true content magazine is the only thing in print that has actually gone up in use while the phonebooks, coupon-based publications, newspapers, auto and real estate circulars, have drastically shrunk and gone way down in use. In addition to our printed magazine, we have a strong presence on social media, and our magazines are also available, free, online when you go to the App Store or Google Play to download our free app. Here at The Lakes Magazine, we take pride in promoting positive news and historical content. Many of the advertisers that have reached out to us have been in business many years but have never advertised before. Today, we have a nice collective gathering of the region’s best word-of-mouth businesses. The Lakes Magazine, overall, reaches 75,000-plus that will look here for businesses and services to patronize hyper-locally. We cannot accept all new advertisement requests, but we do have openings for certain types of trades and businesses. For all inquiries email us at John@townepost.com or call (574) 2499217.
