HERSHY LUMBER YARD Specialization is Key to Success for Local Company Writer / Lois Tomaszewski Photography Provided

You won’t find carpeting, tile, birdhouses or backyard grills at Hershy Lumber Yard. What you will find at this family-owned business is quality lumber and the hardware needed to finish that building project, without the distractions of other items such as lighting fixtures, gardening implements or plants. In these days of superstores, the simple task of buying lumber for a project can become complex. There are multiple aisles filled with distractions, and a consumer is likely to spend more money and buy more products than they came for. That’s why Hershy Lumber Yard is a pleasant alternative, as the company’s focus is on lumber only. Owned by Samuel Herschberger and his son Delmar Herschberger, the store is located at the family home, utilizing a 28’x80’ building previously underused. The Herschbergers started the business in 2016, with help from their community. Samuel, a 40-year employee in the RV manufacturing industry, was considering retirement. He credits his son for coming up with the idea for the lumber company. There was no place to get lumber in the Topeka area at the time, according to the Herschbergers. The closest supplier was in Shipshewana, about 11 miles away - not very convenient for many of the families, farmers and carpenters in this area of the state.

According to Delmar, having a lumber yard in the community gives local contractors a place to buy necessary materials. The opportunity for customers to inspect each piece of cut wood makes Hershy different from hardware stores and big-box megastores. “I like to pick out my lumber myself,” Delmar says. “That way I can pick out what I want. There won’t be anything that I have to take back.” Providiwng such hands-on service means a contractor can select the boards needed. They can make sure the board is straight, checking the grain and the edge for defects. They can also decide if the knotholes in the board will work for a project, or opt to choose a different board. Hershy Lumber Yard stocks many board sizes, from 2”x4” up to 2”x12”. The company also has nails, metal and decking screws, washer heads, and GRK fasteners, among other types. They also have cement blocks, ready-mix cement and mortar, field tile and framing materials for barn doors. GrenHeat Bricks are also part of the inventory, and are part of their summer sale. These pressed wood bricks are used in fireplaces and wood stoves. The bricks are made from recycled hardwoods and contain no additives or binders. They burn slower than hardwood and generate less smoke, ash and creosote. The company is now offering delivery for a nominal fee.

The company’s typical customer comes from the local area. Hershy doesn’t have large contractors buying supplies, but that hasn’t deterred the growth of the business. Word of mouth has proven to be effective for Hershy Lumber Yard according to Delmar, and local support from customers keeps the business successful. “Farmers still need wood to repair their buildings,” he says. The Herschbergers are thankful that the business community is

also supportive of their home-grown company. Hardware stores in Shipshewana, for example, are sending customers their way. “They are glad we started this,” Samuel says. “We would like to build on, with the business growing like it is.” If expansion occurs, Delmar says it would likely double the existing footprint of the company. Samuel is 69 years old and is still active in the business. Delmar said he appreciates his father being onsite to act as a mentor, and help

drive the business. Samuel enjoys being able to come and go as he wants in a boss capacity, and as Delmar still works at an RV factory, onsite staffing is provided by Samuel.

Samuel says. “If we don’t have it, we can try to get it for them.” Hershy Lumber Yard is located at 6505 South 500 West in Topeka. For more information, call 260-593-0325.

Samuel and his wife LeAnna are based in the local area. The couple raised six children, three boys and three girls. One of their sons was killed in 2012 in a car-and-bike accident. Samuel and LeAnna consider their son’s widow and her new husband as their own. Delmar is 30. He and his wife Ruby have one child, a daughter.

Davidsen’s Pier Service and Sales Thrives on Customer Service Writer / Angela Cornell Photographer / Timothy Hare

The best waterfront properties, public or private, are known for having specific characteristics. They are built on beautiful lakes and have enviable water access. The properties themselves are often exquisite, with well-manicured lawns and architecture that elicits wows from those who walk by. Pier and boat-lift quality is vital as well. David Davidsen, owner of Davidsen’s Pier Service and Sales LLC, has always enjoyed the outdoors. When a friend encouraged him to become a partner in a pier service business 21 years ago, Davidsen was pleasantly surprised. “It is not a job where you need to be inside all the time,” he says. “You get to be out there on the lake. The first couple of piers that I did, I was amazed. I got paid for doing something at the lake. It was very appealing. I’ve always loved the water and I like being out there. I couldn’t imagine a better fit.” As time passed, Davidsen bought out his business partner. After that, it only took a few years for the business to outgrow his garage. Today Davidsen’s storefront and showroom borders State Road 13, south of North Webster. “We have one of the biggest, nicest pier shops around,” he says. “We have one of the biggest displays and we carry more products than any of my competitors do.” Davidsen’s Pier Service and Sales offers a wide variety

of products. Their piers are made of high-quality vinyl, aluminum or wood. As far as styles go, the company offers rolling, floating and fixed piers. Boat lifts are also big sellers. Davidsen carries a vast variety of parts and accessories at the store as well. “Anything that we sell, we carry parts to cover warranty, wear and service,” he says. That goes for all of the company’s major brands including FLOE, Atlas and ShoreStation. “We sell any kind of lake-life stuff - just about anything you can think of that has to do with it,” Davidsen says. The business also offers parts and pieces for resale. “I also have what we call the boneyard, where if somebody has a part for a Muncie pier that they needed, most likely we could find something around here that would work for them,” Davidsen says. Customer satisfaction is Davidsen’s highest priority, from the moment someone calls the store and speaks with his wife Shanna, to the first time they step onto their new pier. During an initial customer interaction, Davidsen’s first order of business is to discover exactly what the customer needs. “If you called and said, ‘I need a new boat lift,’ I would have you meet me at the shop and custom fit a boat lift for you, and figure out what you wanted on it,” he says.

“Then I would meet you out at your site and figure out what it’s going to take to put the boat lift in the water.” After a job is completed, the customer is always asked to look their new product over to make sure it meets

“The customers are probably my favorite part of the business. They give us a lot of love. They show us appreciation. The respect and admiration they give us makes the job really fun.” - David Davidsen their expectations. Davidsen’s staff members, known to customers as the pier dudes, are known for more than their products. Their services range from installment and removal to repair work and emergency repairs. “The reason everyone wants to get on my list is because I get my piers in the water on time,” Davidsen says. “Being with a company like mine - we have a crew available on holiday weekends and on Sundays - it’s something that’s very beneficial to [customers] because what they want is time on the lake.” However, service is only available to priority customers who have purchased a lift or pier. “I have between 12 and 14 people a day come through the shop trying to get on our service list,” Davidsen says. “I can’t pick up everyone, unfortunately.” Another way Davidsen ensures quality service is by maintaining a limited service area.

“We used to go 40 to 50 miles away, but we’ve limited it down now,” he says. “We like to stay between Syracuse Lake and Winona Lake. We had to cut our area down in order to give the kind of service that I want.” Davidsen’s service speaks for itself, and he gains new business mostly through word-of-mouth. He takes great pride in his business, and it would be impossible without his customers. “The customers are probably my favorite part of the business,” he says. “They give us a lot of love. They show us appreciation. The respect and admiration they give us makes the job really fun. We want the best customers and we want to give the best service to them.” Davidsen’s Pier Service and Sales is located at 4894 North Baldwin Road in North Webster. T

here are few vehicle purchases that can qualify exclusively as recreational. That’s one of the main things that sets Cambe Carts apart from other businesses. “It’s kind of cool to deal with something that people are excited to buy,” says Owner Jeff Cambe. “A golf cart is a toy to everybody, and toys are more fun to sell.” For Cambe, the opportunity to move from car to golf cart sales was somewhat unexpected. At the time, the car dealership he was working for was interested in buying some golf carts to make the large lot easier to traverse. “I started looking around for golf carts and started realizing that there weren’t a lot of them available in the marketplace,” he says. “You had to go up all the way to Michigan to buy one.” It didn’t take much marketing research for Cambe, who already owned JC Motorsports, to realize it would be a shrewd move to add golf carts to his sales repertoire. Thanks to area lakes and campgrounds, the business was doing so well that Cambe, along with his wife Sherri, decided to diversify the business even more by buying the Knox Chevrolet dealership in 2003. “When we moved to Knox with the golf cart business, it just took off,” he says. “It’s been a tremendous business for us. It’s been good and golf carts are different from anything else I’ve ever done.” As the only golf cart dealership in the area, Cambe keeps a wide variety of E-ZGO carts stocked onsite so he and his

sales staff can match each customer to the best golf cart for their needs. “We try to qualify and figure out what exactly it is that they’re looking for,” Cambe says. “We try to get them through the door and show them what we have.” Delivery and local financing options are available for those who want it. Gas and electric carts are available, depending on the customer’s intended use.

“The person who likes the electric likes that it’s quiet and smooth,” Cambe says. “The downside to them is you need to take care of the battery. A new one on a full charge will go approximately 30 to 35 miles. Say we get someone who owns a farm and he wants to go through his fields and stuff, to where he’ll be on it all day. Then we’ll probably recommend a gas cart. On the new side, the gas ones seem to be more desirable. Everybody likes the gas golf carts.”

Cambe also offers pre-owned options, with a current selection that is smaller than most years due to the coronavirus pandemic. “[The pandemic] affected our business this year in more ways than one,” he says. “It seemed like the sales of golf carts were stronger this year. Everyone I talk to in the outdoor activities market seems to have done very well this summer.” Cambe and his team offer in-house service and parts.

Most of them have back seats that will flip over and turn into a little flatbed for picking up sticks or things like that. There are so many uses for them.” Cambe’s favorite part of the job is being there for his customers and providing for their entertainment desires.

“A lot of these [furniture pieces] are locally made,” Vern Weaver says. “We also buy from small workshops located through the midwest. We pick up unfinished furniture then bring it back and finish it here. It’s all U.S.A.-made stuff. It’s not like it’s coming out of a box somewhere.” To ensure the durability of the products, most of the merchandise is made from hardwoods like cherry, oak, maple and walnut. With the wide variety of stains and paints available in the workroom, there are literally hundreds of color combinations to choose from. There are also plenty of styles to choose from at the store, from plain to fancy, from Queen Anne to shabby chic. The business has something for every budget, from cash-and-carry clearance

items to high-end furniture. When a customer doesn’t know what they want, the staff is eager to help. “Most people come in and they don’t know what they’re looking for,” Weaver says. “They might want a new table, but they don’t have a style in mind. If they come in and they see a style that we have, then we can customize that style. That’s our niche. That’s what people come in here for - hand-built furniture that they can customize however they want.”

Providing customizable Amish furniture isn’t the only service that Weaver and his staff offer. They also refinish and repair furniture. “We fix furniture that we don’t sell,” Weaver says. “We do that quite a bit. We do a lot of color matching as well. We have people come in all the time who maybe have a table that they like, but they’re looking for new chairs. They’ll bring in a table leaf and we’ll match the chairs to the table.” Weaver and his team stay up to date on the latest home furnishing fashions as well. “Right now what’s in is the rustic urban look, like maybe a live-edge top with a metal base,” Weaver says.

“Finding the right thing for the customer, and having the customer be happy about their purchase and experience - that’s my favorite part, just helping people with their furniture or whatever they need.” - Vern Weaver

The business offers more than just tables, kitchen furnishings and bedroom sets. “We try to be a complete furniture retailer,” Weaver says. “We don’t only have Amish, solid-wood furniture. We have mattresses and we have upholstery.” The company offers a wide range of sofa sizes in addition to office furniture, a private-label line of motion recliners, grandfather clocks and much more. Baldwin And Company Owner Talks About Client-First Approach Writer / Angela Cornell Photographer / Jubilee Edgell

For many people, money is a subject of contention. Budgeting is stressful, financial planning is a difficult field to navigate, finding the right insurance policy can be a nightmare and don’t get me started on taxes. Fortunately, accountant Barry Baldwin, E.A., the owner of Baldwin And Company, specializes in making his clients’ lives easier by being a onestop-shop for all things relating to money, whether that’s with taxes, business consulting, bookkeeping, budgeting and a dozen other services. Over a thousand people across the nation appreciate Baldwin’s services. His clients span the demographic gamete from corporations, small businesses and not-for-profit organizations to individuals of all ages and economic status. Each one is treated like royalty, something that Baldwin contributes to his wife’s influence. “[Linda] is the business development for Baldwin And Company, which she is responsible for about all the business we have in Rochester — getting those accounts and keeping them. She also does that function for our clients,” Baldwin says. “I do the numbers, she does the people part of it.” Baldwin’s dad, Wayne, the firm’s founder, is also still involved in the business. “He is 82 years old and he works ‘semi’ full time. He comes and goes as he pleases and still sharp as a tack,” Barry says.

For the second-generation owner, it’s a blessing to be able to work with his primary influencer. “I’m really blessed and I know it,” he says. “He’s the one who taught me and inspired me. We just reversed roles. Now I have all the headaches and the problems and he comes in, does his job, and leaves. He likes it that way and I do, too.” One of Baldwin’s passions is for small business advocacy. “We focus on keeping our clients in business, keeping them profitable,” he adds. This is evident in the exclusive services that are offered by Baldwin And Company, like the Business 911 Plan, a program designed to help new and struggling businesses. “We basically live with them for about a week and come up with answers and identify problems,” Baldwin says. “It’s been very successful.” Another way they advocate for small businesses is through their complimentary referral network, which is exclusively available to Baldwin’s clientele. “We truly support our clients,” Baldwin says. “We’re not going to

refer anyone that’s not good and people know that.” The referral network includes businesses from all over the nation. “When we sign on a new client, we let them know that we are there to help,” Baldwin adds. “If they need a contractor, we know 10 of them that are really good. If you want a good place to eat, we know 20 that are really good. If you need your horse trained or a veterinarian, we know one. We have all their business cards at our office and if they are needing something, we can say, ‘Here you go. This is who we recommend.’” Baldwin also offers many services for individuals. One is the We Care Concierge. “We like to say that this is the personal finance division,” Baldwin says. The services offered in this program are many and vary, depending on the needs of the clients. They manage budgets, balance checkbooks, pay bills, negotiate with creditors and collectors, work with personal banking options and more.

“We do it for a lot of people, like truck drivers who just don’t have time to keep their own personal books and pay their bills,” Baldwin says. “We have wealthy people who just don’t like doing it and elderly people who were getting taken advantage of.” From beginning to end, Baldwin And Company is there for its clients. “My favorite part of this job is helping people in any way that I possibly can,” he says. “The interactions, the personal relationships are the most rewarding for us. Right behind that, it is very satisfying to know that I can provide a good service at a fair price to actually help people.” To schedule an appointment to get your free new client consultation, visit Baldwin And Company at their Rochester office at 814 Main St. or call them at (574) 223-2454. In Logansport, they are located at 1800 E. Broadway and can be reached at (574) 753-3898. View their full list of services online at baldwinEA.com or email inquiries to baldwintaxman@gmail.com.

CLEARVIEW ROUTING QUALITY IS PARAMOUNT FOR SHIPSHEWANABASED COMPANY Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided

Daryl and Earl Hershberger, co-owners of Clearview Routing, LLC in Shipshewana, are known for doing a variety of high-quality work. “We are a family-owned and -operated business that does a variety of things,” Daryl says. “We use a three-axis CNC machine to cut parts for ourselves, and also parts for

other businesses. Some of the things we manufacture are polymer buggy parts and polycarbonate windshields.” Three-axis CNC machining is one of the most popular and widely used processes, and it has helped Daryl and Earl expand their business. Daryl says Clearview Routing is known for its excellent product manufacturing. “Among the products we manufacture for other people is acrylic cashier shields,” Daryl says. “To build these, we have the ability to bend the acrylic.” Making high-quality signs is another popular service offered by Clearview Routing.

THE LAKES MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2020 / thelakesmagazine.com

“We also make signs using polymer sheet that is two-colored,” Daryl says. “We route through the outside skin to expose the core color. These signs last much longer than your vinyl signage.” Daryl says he and Earl started the business because of the demand for quality work on buggies. “Clearview was started to meet the demand for a durable, clear windshield for our buggies,” Daryl says. “To build these windshields, we have the ability to glue polycarbonate. The second major product to join us is our sign division. We want to thank Wingard’s Custom Plastics for selling us that.” The Hershberger brothers’ work has earned them a loyal customer base that continues to take advantage of their quality services. They have expanded their customer base through positive word of mouth and attention to detail. Buggy parts and signs have both been mainstays for the business.

“Our main consistent product would be the buggy parts, followed by our custom signs,” Daryl says. “I enjoy all the parts that I make.” Daryl says he and Earl know how to prioritize their work. It’s a business strategy that has worked for them consistently since they opened in January of 2016. “We try to give parts for other builders the first priority, and use the signs to fill in the gaps,” Daryl says. “Lead times can vary. Most of the time parts can be made in a week, and signs can take a week to three weeks maximum.” The signs provide a way to showcase Daryl and Earl’s quality workmanship. The brothers’ reputation for excellence has grown beyond the Hoosier state. “We supply the buggy industry not only in Indiana, but also nationwide,” Daryl says.

Doing work for businesses in other states has enabled Daryl and Earl to continue growing their company. It’s also given them the motivation to meet new customers and keep the company moving in the right direction. Daryl says walk-in business at Clearview Routing is both welcomed and encouraged.

“I like all my customers, but we do mostly wholesale business so a lot of our orders are done by phone or fax, including signs,” Daryl says. “Customers are always able to stop in to also place an order.” Daryl says the coronavirus pandemic has led to increased business for Clearview Routing. “COVID-19 has had a huge impact on our business,” he says. “It created the opportunity to build acrylic cashier shields. Most of these went to Harbor Freight and PetSmart stores through a retail supply company called Vista Retail Solutions.”

Jimmy Faroh, co-owner of Hoosier Powder Coating in Nappanee, says he and his staff can take on any job, and ensure satisfactory results for customers. Faroh says it’s been that way since the company began. He and fellow co-owner Nelson Miller worked together before opening the business in October of 2016. “Nelson and I both worked at Challenger Door in Nappanee,” Faroh says. “Nelson was the quality manager and I was the production superintendent. Together, we saw the need for more powder coating, especially large items, and decided to go

into business together.” Hoosier Powder Coating is a one-stop shop for sandblasting and similar services. Faroh says the staff can take on a variety of jobs. “We have the ability to match any color, as well as fabricate, sandblast and powder coat,” he says. “We sandblast and powder coat in-house, and we have various fabrication partners, so our customers can come to us with drawings, or just an idea, and we can deliver a finished item.” Faroh believes there are many benefits to powder coating. “Powder coating is extremely durable, cost effective, and ecofriendly,” he says. “With powder coating being free from volatile organic compounds, and the quick processing time, it makes a very attractive option for custom projects and large-scale production orders.” Faroh says his staff ’s ability to multitask sets Hoosier Powder Coating apart from competitors. “Hoosier Powder Coating takes any job, big or small,” he says. “We specialize in production orders, but we can handle small orders as well. We also offer multi-stage coating, including clear coats, primers

and Plascoat. We also have the ability to custom match any color, and have over 7,000 colors available to us at any time.” Faroh says Hoosier Powder Coating’s state-of-the-art batch oven has made a big difference in the number of large and small jobs the business can take on. “The oven is 25 feet long, 10 feet wide, and 10 feet tall,” Faroh explains. “It really makes our company unique, because we can work on larger metal pieces. We do a lot of work on big farm equipment, which is huge around here. We can also work on large automotive frames.” Faroh says everything is extensively cleaned after being powder coated. “We really make sure our customers get the absolute best quality,” he says. The same goes for all of the company’s services, including sandblasting jobs.

new. We have had a lot of farmers tell us they like the way we have sandblasted their equipment.”

Faroh has been pleased with the company since he and Miller started it four years ago.

Hoosier Powder Coating does sandblasting in-house with an industrial-sized system.

“I would say about 90% of our business is repeat customers,” Faroh says. “I love Nappanee. People really help each other here. Our customers have kept us extremely busy. It’s great to see that the industries we serve are still going strong during the pandemic.”

“We tell our customers that we can take on any size for the sandblasting,” Faroh says. “We also have the ability to come to your location to sandblast if you have something that is too big to be moved.” Faroh says Hoosier Powder Coating also does laser and plasma coating.

Hoosier Powder Coating is located at 9583 West 1350 North in Nappanee. To find out more, call 574-253-7737, email info@ hoosierpowder.com, and visit hoosierpowder.com.

“We have the ability to laser cut wood, plastic, steel, fiber, aluminum and stainless steel,” he says. “We can also etch all metals, and offer wood burnings.” Faroh says Hoosier Powder Coating also has a unique, four-stage wash system. Additionally, the business offers brake press forming, welding and turret punching. “It’s fast and doesn’t cost a lot,” Faroh says of the company’s turretpunching service. “I think that’s also why we get a lot of customers.”

E M B R AC E THE PACE Explore All Nappanee Has to Offer Writer / Angela Cornell Photography Provided

Some towns have a certain feel to them. There are several factors that might contribute to this, like a distinct feature - a lake or river, for instance - or a landmark that the whole community is proud of. Sometimes the town’s vibe is brought about by a common attribute among most

of the inhabitants. Take Nappanee, for example, which is known for its motto, “Embrace the Pace”.

the town’s historic downtown in particular has several places that are well worth the visit.

Nappanee, which is centered around the intersection of State Route 19 and State Road 6, is a welcoming community and an excellent place to go for a day out, especially for someone in a serious shopping mood. Although there are cute shops scattered all over the Nappanee area,

One of Nappanee’s crowning glories is The Barns at Nappanee. Once known as Amish Acres, it still has the features that people have loved for a generation. Currently open Thursday through Sunday, this establishment still offers excellent theatrical entertainment and a restaurant,

“We were doing a lot of festivals, selling the barnwood cabinets and frames,” Jerry says. “We had to have a name of a business for taxes. So we just came up with ‘Born in a Barn’ since most of our stuff at that time was made out of barn siding.” By 1985, Jerry had married the love of his life, Vicki. “One of the reasons we got married was so we would quit bidding against each other at the auctions,” Jerry jokes.

“People would call us. Maybe it was a small estate and they don’t want to have an auction or they don’t want people coming in. We still get calls,” Vicki says. From festivals and flea markets, the business expanded into different antique malls in the area until the Cooleys opened a shop in an old rental home.

Writer / Angela Cornell Photographer / Jubilee Edgell

It started with an old barn that Jerry Cooley and his brother tore down in 1976. After dividing the lumber, Jerry made his share into cabinets. It didn’t take long for him to discover that he loved building with reclaimed wood and people in the area quickly realized he was a gifted carpenter. Eventually, it became a side business.

At first, they bought antiques as accessories to accent Jerry’s cabinets, so it didn’t take long for the word to get around that the Cooleys were in the market.

“Our last downstairs renters gave us notice that they were going to move,” Jerry says. “We had always talked about having our own shop. And then we did.” After remodeling the rental home into a storefront, they officially opened their doors as Born in a Barn Antiques in October 2005.

“I would go in there after work sometimes and work in the shop,” Vicki says. “I would be in there until 1:00 in the morning, but I enjoyed doing it. It was a happy time.” Now that both Vicki and Jerry are retired they get to spend more time with Born in a Barn, which today features fewer barnwood cabinets and more antiques. They also sell homemade jams, jellies and honey along with locally-made crafts. “We advertise that we have new stuff, old stuff and some downright ugly stuff,” says Vicki with a smile. Since the Cooleys are collectors at heart, it’s no surprise that they have a wide range of furniture, tools, toys, glassware and collectibles. Most of the time, when the Cooleys purchase an antique, it’s because it fascinates them. “It’s all stuff that we like or we wouldn’t have bought it,” Jerry says. However, it’s not uncommon for them to find an item that a customer has requested, something the Cooleys keep track of on a small Rolodex.

Although most of what is featured in Born in a Barn is for sale, some items belong to the Cooleys and are only on display. “Above our counter, there’s a shelf there that has things from my childhood,” Jerry says. “I have a little red toy barn that my dad made out of an orange crate. I remember him making it when I was about 12 years old. We have things up on the shelf that, at one time or another, got broke or don’t work. You hate to throw them away, but you won’t be able to sell it if it has a crack. So we have stuff like that up on a shelf that’s fun to look at but really not for sale.” “We try to stay on the lookout for what people want,” Vicki says. In the antique market, making a living can be difficult, which is why Born in a Barn has expanded to include other items. The Cooleys have discovered that collectibles in particular, like older advertising clocks, Boardwalk Originals and paintings by Indiana artists make the business possible. However, they rarely have a constant inventory. “It varies,” Vicki says. “What I think is interesting right now may not be in there by tomorrow.”

The Cooleys are passionate about their hometown and their work. Everything they do, though, stems from a foundation of faith in Jesus Christ. “We owe it all to Him,” Jerry says. “We’re not bragging about what we’ve done. We’re bragging about what he’s done for us.” Born in a Barn antiques is located at 302 N. Heaton St. in Knox. Their hours are 10 AM to 4 PM Thursday through Saturday or by appointment. Give them a call at 574-772-3802 for more information.

GET YOUR MOTOR RUNNING County Line Engine Puts Customer Satisfaction First Writer / Lois Tomaszewski Photography Provided

Jonas Yoder worked in a factory for several years and decided he wanted to learn more about engines, so he began tinkering during his downtime at home. That hobby has developed into a successful repair business that Yoder manages with the help of his three sons. County Line Engine is a long-established repair and equipment sales business in Ligonier. Yoder bought the business in 2006, and marked 14 years as the sole proprietor in August. Originally, the business started in the 1970s and was passed on through multiple generations in the same family. If that happens within the Yoder family, Yoder would be pleased. Yoder and his wife Martha married on September 11, 1997. The couple has three sons and four daughters. Their children range in age from 10 to 22. “My boys are getting older,” Yoder says. “Any child should learn how to work. We get to work together, and this is a good business to be in.” He starts his boys off with simple tasks, such as stocking the shelves. He gives them their own tools and work bench, and they learn by a tried-and-true, hands-on approach. “My 14-year-old can already do a lot of minor repairs,” Yoder says. “They have grown up in this work.” 58 / THE LAKES / OCTOBER 2020 / TheLakesMagazine.com

A business made up entirely of family members does have its drawbacks. It means the shop closes when the family attends reunions or other family functions. County Line Engine sells outdoor power equipment such as leaf blowers, mowers, and a variety of equipment with small engines. Yoder handles repairs on this same type of equipment. Yoder says the type of repair work and equipment offered at the shop varies by season. In the spring lawnmowers come into the shop, and he sees more snowblowers and chainsaws in the fall and winter. As far as equipment sales, every year seems to bring a different buying trend. When brands release new models with new technology or features, people tend to upgrade. Overall, Yoder says sales have been growing, and what is sold is still the same equipment his customers always buy.

“I try to keep everyone happy. We get equipment back as soon as possible and if something is wrong with our work, we take care of that right away.”

County Line Engine is located out in the country, but that has not seemed to hurt Yoder’s customer volume. Most of his customers are from the local area, coming from an approximate 30-mile radius to his shop. He does serve some customers that hail from Chicago, but these customers tend to own lake cottages nearby.

-Jonas Yoder

While a main road would mean more exposure to potential customers, Yoder is fine with his location. “They say a high-traffic area is better for business,” he says. “Enough people find me. I don’t know how I would get the work done if I was on a busy highway. If you do good work and word gets around, people find you.” Once people walk in his doors, Yoder tries to keep them satisfied. He does this by trying to get equipment repaired and
