instructors. This certification comes with high standards and training, something that is needed when helping the children gain confidence and addressing mobility and other physical issues. LoveWay works with students in 15 school districts in Elkhart County, Indiana and Cass County, Michigan. Students with cognitive or physical disabilities make use of the services as part of their school day. Homeschooled students are also served in the evening or on Saturdays. Becker said her organization works with 90 different diagnoses and services are provided free of charge. Equine Assisted Services help these children in many ways.
“Students are impacted physically through the movement of the horse,” Becker explains. “They are impacted socially by the volunteers who are incorporated into the sessions, and they are impacted emotionally with animals, like all of us are. They are also impacted
cognitively, too.” Students work with a team and the instructor. The team includes a horse walker, a person who leads the horse in the arena, and one or two side walkers, depending on the individual child’s
needs. That means that volunteers are critical to the services each student receives, Becker says. Volunteers are given extensive training and then assigned as their skills and knowledge improve. No prior knowledge

asked to do any more than they are confident doing.” A minimum of 175 volunteers are needed each school year. Time slots are available during the day, in the evenings and on weekends. As the organization gets ready

A-Thon. Riders and their horses come to LoveWay to take part in an 8-mile trail ride. This has been going on for 28 years. The 2021 event was Sept. 25. LoveWay was established 48 years ago. As detailed in the history page on the website: “LoveWay Projects, Inc. was founded by Gary and Sandy Weatherwax in 1973 in memory of their 16-year-old daughter, Laurie. While in high school, Laurie had taken a school trip to Augusta, Michigan to visit the Cheff Center. At that time, Cheff Center was the only therapeutic riding center in the United States.” The visit cemented Laurie’s desire to help others with physical, mental or emotional disabilities, and to help her father, who had been paralyzed in an accident and required the lifetime use of a wheelchair. During a mission trip to Africa, Laurie was stricken with a fatal virus. It was in her memory that LoveWay was founded. LoveWay is still going strong partly because of the organization’s ability to provide a specific need, Becker says. “We have been able to give students with special needs an opportunity that they could not get anywhere else,” she explains. “We tell these students what they can do when so often they are told what they cannot do.” To find out more about the organization or to donate, visit www.lovewayinc.org. LoveWay is located 54151 County Road 33, Middlebury. Call 574-825-5666 for more information.

RIPE FOR THE PICKING KUHNS ORCHARD IN BREMEN IS TRULY A FAMILY AFFAIR Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided
LaMar Kuhns with Kuhns Orchard in Bremen says he enjoys putting in a full day’s work with his family. It makes him happy. He enjoys the fruits of his labor, offers customers healthy food, and gets a lot of good exercise. Kuhns owns and operates Kuhns Orchard with his wife Lorene. He says his family stays active making sure their business thrives throughout the year. “We have three married children, and one son who is still at home,” Kuhns says. “Most of them are still pretty involved with operations around here and help out when they can.” Kuhns says his parents started Kuhns Orchard, which has always been family owned and operated. It gives him a great feeling to know that the whole family has made the business successful.
TownePost.com / OCTOBER 2021 / THE LAKES / 13
“My parents bought this 80-acre farm and orchard back in 1986, when I was still a young teenager,” Kuhns says. “After we got married in 1994, my folks put up another house here, and we moved into the farmhouse. Lorene and I, along with our four children, milked the cows, farmed the land and helped my parents in the fall season.” Kuhns says the business has grown a lot over the years, and has earned a great reputation for having fresh, healthy food at a good price. Kuhns says the orchard is filled with great products that customers can choose from. “We have many varieties of fresh-picked apples, and delicious and sweet unpasteurized cider made here,” Kuhns says. “It all tastes good.” The cider has earned positive word of mouth over the years. Kuhns adds that the great-tasting food doesn’t stop there.

“We have many homemade canned goods including jams, jellies, apple butter, applesauce, pickles, salsa, pie fillings, honey, maple syrup and apple cider vinegar,” Kuhns says. The apple cider vinegar is available in half or full gallons. Kuhns adds that the tasty food products have made loyal customers very happy, and they often tell their family and friends about Kuhns Orchard. “We also have bison summer sausage, and snack sticks,” he says. “Everything is locally grown and made. We also have farm-fresh milk and eggs.” Kuhns notes that the milk flavors include strawberry, chocolate, white, blueberry and more. The Kuhns Orchard staff has also ventured into offering a new product.

“Families are welcome and we enjoy it when they come here,” Kuhns says. “We don’t have any activities at this time, but some people enjoy strolling around our farm, petting our dogs and cats, and looking at the farm animals.” Kuhns adds that it’s a nice trip to the orchard for a lot of people, both near and far, and the business is located four miles west of Nappanee. Kuhns says he thoroughly enjoys his work. His customers are an endless source of happiness for him and his family. They have made a lot of friends through the years. “The best part of our work is knowing you have a very happy and satisfied customer,” Kuhns says. “We enjoy all of our great customers who inspire us more than they know.”

TIPPY RIVER DOG AND HUNT SUPPLY COVERS ALL YOUR HUNTING AND FISHING NEEDS Writer / Angela Cornell Photography Provided
Stores like Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s are the Disney World of the outdoor sports world. However, for areas like the lakes region of Indiana, where the closest one is an hour away or farther, outdoor enthusiasts have to content themselves with browsing sections in franchised farm stores or shopping online. Jake Wyatt and his partner Johnny Wadkins opened Tippy River Dog and Hunt Supply. Wyatt has always loved the outdoors. “I grew up hunting and fishing,” he says. “That was my life. Even after I graduated high school, I went to Wyoming and
became a professional hunting and fishing guide for big game.” After a few years he moved back to Indiana. Although he transitioned out of the field professionally, he kept it up as a hobby. It was through coon hunting that he met Wadkins, who is a champion coon hunter and a local supply dealer. The two men bonded over their mutual love of the hunting sports. That passion eventually led to inspiration. “We were talking one day and we thought, ‘This community really needs a good outdoor shop,’” Wyatt says. “We have the drawing power to draw people from states away, with the niche being coon hunting. There’s really no place to go to get these TownePost.com / OCTOBER 2021 / THE LAKES / 19
products. Box stores don’t really sell stuff like this.” The rest is history. Today, Tippy River is a one-stop shop for all hunting needs. “It’s an outdoor shop,” Wyatt says. “It has everything for hunting and fishing as our niche. Our core is for coon hunting.” Their other core areas are hometown customer service and industry expertise. “I want that one-on-one feel when someone walks through the door,” Wyatt says. “Customer service is there for sure. I think the knowledge is there, with Johnny or myself. I’ve hunted or fished just about anything. I have knowledge from doing it all my life - not just in Indiana but across the United States.” Since opening, the shop has grown into a business for hunters and fishermen,

by hunters and fishermen. Today, they have supplies for all sorts of outdoor sportsmen, including hunters of upland birds, rabbits and squirrels. “We all use the same products to track dogs and for some gear,” Wyatt says. Dog owners can also get personalized dog collars at Tippy River. “Buy a collar off the shelf, and I can put your name and number on the tag and rivet it onto the collar,” Wyatt says. They’re also an authorized Garmin dealer, and Wyatt says the shop carries “anything from luxury watches to dog collars, GPSs, track-and-train stuff - any of that.” The owners recently added deer hunting supplies to the inventory, just in time for the season to begin on October 1. “We have basically all your necessities

for deer hunting - stands, blinds, scent controls, safety harnesses, arrowheads that kind of thing,” Wyatt says. As a result of being located less than 10 minutes away from Lake Manitou, the shop has a large selection of bait and tackle, much of which is up to tournament standards. “We have a lot of soft plastics for our bass fishermen, as well as crappie, blue gill and catfish baits,” Wyatt says. “We sell live bait. We have crappie minnows, bass minnows, night crawlers, wax worms, wigglers and crickets.”

goat feed. We even sell some vaccines - your seven-way shots for your dogs, heartworm and all-wormer, and stuff like that.”
However, they don’t only sell fishing and hunting gear. Half of their store includes grain and feed supplies.
Wyatt and Wadkins hope to continue to expand their business in the years to come, both with products and with hunting and fishing tournament events.
“We sell anything from pond fish food to horse feed,” Wyatt says. “The only thing we don’t sell is cattle and pig food. We have rabbit food, chicken layer, deer feed and
“I would really like to have a bass fishing tournament,” Wyatt says. “We’re also talking about having a competition coon hunt and a cookout. That’s all in the future.

usiness owner Kevin Carr is motivated by several things - his faith, his family and the quality of the work he provides to his customers.
Most of the customers at his dent repair business, Carr Tech Automotive Services, fall into two categories, Carr says. “A high percentage of my customers are the people who are aggravated about the ding they see every day as they get into their car headed for work, and also the person who is super frustrated to come out to a parking lot and find their car damaged,” he says. Carr spent seven years working in the mobile paintless dent repair business, being trained by a good friend he met when working in jail ministry, before opening his own shop in April of 2018. It is a family business, and that means that his wife Elizabeth and the couple’s nine children have put in “blood, sweat and tears,” he says, to get it running and keeping it going.

On weekends and sometimes during the week the children often visit the shop. It is a perk that Carr enjoys. That quality family life carries over into the quality he places on the work his team completes for customers. Carr’s business motto is, “A good name is to be chosen over great riches,” from Proverbs 22:1. He stands by the quality of the work. It is the same trait he expects of those he hires. New hires need to be team-oriented. He currently employs four full-time people. Three mobile dent repair technicians, an office manager, and a detailer and painter are all part of his team. “I want people who work together and root for each other,” Carr explains. “I want people who want a career. Passion is required. You’ve got to love your work and take pride in it, and know your name is connected to that.”

The dent repair business is complex, and once potential employees learn all the nuances of the repair process and methods used, Carr says they eventually earn “hat-off respect. For a properly trained tech, this is more than a job, it’s an art.”

Carr Tech uses a method that pushes out dents and dings without painting. These dents can be the result of grocery-cart hits, door dings or even hail damage. Carr has even seen a few dents caused by a collision with a deer. If the vehicle has a dent and the paint surface has not been broken, Carr Tech should be the first call. The repair methods used at Carr Tech differ from those that are used by a traditional body shop, but Carr’s methods are often completed within one day, don’t require repair reports, and are usually much more cost effective for the customer. Repairs of dents caused by hail take longer because of the potentially excessive damage. Traditionally, damage that occurs from a hail storm is fixed with a polyester putty product, which is then sanded, buffed and painted. Otherwise, the damaged panels are taken off, replaced, and the car is repainted. This is labor intensive, which adds to the cost of the repairs. The Carr Tech method is the preferred method of repairing dents, Carr says. It repairs the dented surface without requiring any use of body filler, repainting or color matching. It is typically more cost effective for the client, depending on the size and damage. Carr Tech has specialized in paintless dent repair since opening, and is expanding the services offered including System X ceramic coating. RestoreFX, a paintless clear coat repair system, was recently added, and it takes care of scratches caused by pets, debris or car washes, among other causes. “It’s like hitting the reset button on your vehicle’s clear coat,” Carr explains.

Anyone who needs a dent repaired is encouraged to check in with Carr Tech. If the damage is caused by hail, the customer
should file a claim with their insurance company first, and then contact them with the claim number and insurance company contact and they can take it from there. If the dent is not from hail damage, Carr says the customer can take a photo of the dent and send it to Carr Tech via text. By looking at the photo, Carr can advise the customer as to the options, and whether the repair can be done by his team or should be taken to an auto body shop. He works with insurance companies for needed repairs, as well as local body shops. “Unless it is really mangled, we can get an estimate prepared with a photo,” he says. When a repair is needed, the Carr Tech dent repair team can travel to the customer or take care of the vehicle at the Warsaw shop. His team travels throughout northern Indiana including Fort Wayne, Elkhart, Bristol, Granger, Lakeville, South Bend, Plymouth, Rochester, Goshen, Leesburg, Wabash, North Manchester, Columbia
City, Syracuse, Middlebury and other locations. Carr has been in this business long enough to learn some important lessons. He feels quality is more important than speed. The key to customer satisfaction, he says, is to undersell and over-deliver. This ensures that the result will meet or exceed customer expectations. Without quality, the stress factor increases, he says. For Carr, his reward is seeing something damaged become repaired, and giving his customers what he calls the “wow effect.” He likens this to his strong faith, which

compels him to give Bibles to anyone who stops in and asks for one. “We get to do auto restoration, but God takes ruined sinners and does a spiritual restoration,” Carr says. “My faith is the heartbeat that keeps us going.” Customers can come into the shop at 904 South Buffalo Street in Warsaw, call 574-241-1234, or visit carrtechautomotivesolutions.com for more information.

FROM OUR KITCHEN TO YOURS TEA, NATURES MEDICINE CABINET Writer / Cheryl – New Kitchen Store
Typically most people are either coffee drinkers or tea drinkers. Even if they drink both they tend to prefer one over the other. In my younger years, I was almost exclusively a coffee drinker. I would pretty much only drink tea in the summer in the iced form. As time has gone by, I am now one of those people who like both. The main reason for my switch to drinking more tea is because I have become more and more aware of the health benefits of drinking tea. Nearly 20 years ago I was diagnosed with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). At the time, after a myriad of horrible tests, the doctors sent me away
with the diagnosis but nothing else. They said there was nothing they could do and that I would have to learn to live with it. I definitely knew that it was not something I could just live with, so I turned to alternative medicine. The more research I did, the more and more often I was directed back to tea as a help in alleviating my symptoms. Not just any tea though, specific teas for specific symptoms. The two main teas that I found to help the most are ginger tea and peppermint tea. Did you know that ginger THE LAKES MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2021 / TownePost.com / 31
is a natural remedy for nausea and vomiting? It has been found to be just as effective as prescription antiemetic drugs but without any of the nasty side effects. Peppermint is a natural muscle relaxer. When I was having severe gut cramps I would brew a very
strong cup of peppermint tea and within 20 minutes most, if not all of the cramps were gone. Do you suffer from acid reflux, heartburn, GERD or any other stomach complaint? I did. I found green tea to be the answer. Green tea reduces the acid in your stomach and helps reduce these very uncomfortable problems. Another great herbal tea is raspberry leaf tea. No matter what stage of life a woman is in, from pre-teen to post-menopausal, raspberry leaf tea has been proven to help the female organs work properly. It reduces cramping and bleeding in younger women, and helps, almost by magic, reduce hot flashes that accompany the change of life. This is another tea that I can personally attest to its benefits in this area. Need a burst of energy? Try moringa tea. Moringa is a tree native to north India. Almost all of the tree is edible and used for medicinal purposes. Moringa leaves are an excellent source of many different vitamins and minerals and are also rich in antioxidants. If I am not able to have my morning cup of coffee, I always reach for my moringa tea. It gives me the same energy as coffee but without the caffeine.
I could go on and on about all the different teas and the benefits of tea, but it would fill this entire magazine. Suffice it to say, that no matter which tea you choose whether black, white, green, Oolong, or herbal there are health benefits to them.
Did you know Oolong tea boosts your metabolism? Yep, it sure does! It combines the qualities of green and black tea and the polyphenol found in this tea may boost your metabolism. And every little bit helps when trying to lose weight!
If you are looking for a place that carries a huge variety of high-quality teas, come to New Kitchen Store. We have an excellent selection of Super Herb Teas, educational
tea books, and tea-making equipment available. Without a doubt, you will find a tea to suit your tastes or your health needs. HUNTER HEARING CENTER HELPS YOU CONNECT TO THE SOUNDS OF LIFE Writer / Lois Tomaszewksi Photographer / Jubilee Edgell
The ability to hear sounds, recognize spoken words and enjoy what happens around you is often taken for granted. At Hunter Hearing Center in Plymouth, Hearing Instrument Specialist Neil Hunter understands how troubling it can be when the ability to hear is impacted by illness, injury or even the aging process. “My son, Adam, has a severe hearing loss in his left ear,” Hunter says. Adam’s hearing loss was not detected when he was an infant and toddler, but his parents noticed that he walked later than their other children and he was prone to ear infections. When he started school, the hearing loss was discovered and Adam was determined to be a candidate for surgery and fitted with hearing aids, which his father says Adam disliked. “Adam’s situation led me to do what I am doing today,” Hunter explains. “It helps me better understand everyone who walks in through my door or when I walk through their door.” Hunter sees clients at his office at 568 Oak Street
Neil is happy to meet where it is convenient for you. He can perform hearing tests, fit and program your hearing instruments - all in the comfort of your own home.

in Plymouth or makes house calls to people who are inbound or cannot come to the office. Many of the people he consults in their homes are Amish. The practice has about 200 patients ranging from Plymouth to the north side Fort Wayne and even to South Whitley. “My patients are like family,” he says. “With all my patients, I spend more time to get them to where they need to be.” He has learned how to adapt the way he operates his business to accommodate lifestyles, such as helping his Amish patients use hearing technology that fits into their way of life and does not compromise their beliefs. Innovations in technology make it easier to find compatible devices for everyone and help make his business mobile, too. Hunter left a career in orthopedic sales for a new career in helping people improve their hearing. He is trained to do hearing testing and fitting for hearing aids, and as he explains, “anything an audiologist can do.” When someone is experiencing hearing loss, which can be gradual, there are some signs that family members can watch for, Hunter advises. It is often difficult for a person who is experiencing a

hearing loss to share what is happening. “No one wants to lose their hearing,” he says. “Some signs are easy to pick out,” he says. “Such as having difficulty understanding people on the phone or when the television is up too loud for others in the household.” But there is another sign that is important to notice, one that can make a difference in the quality of life. “The big one is when you start seeing people withdraw from conversations,” he explains. “They don’t participate, and they stop going out.” Hunter says studies have shown that being able to understand what a person is hearing keeps the brain active. Research shows that there is even a link between being able to hear and understand can slow the progression of dementia or Alzheimer’s, he says. Sometimes the problem with an elderly loved one’s hearing is not related to lack of hearing but more as a cognitive function. “Ultimately, people want to understand what they hear,” he says. “We always need to establish what our goals should be with each patient.”

Taking precautions to minimize hearing loss should be a priority, he says. People who work around loud machinery in factories or noisy environments should be especially concerned. Earplugs and other noise canceling devices are a wise place to start, but sound can travel through a bone, so these alone might not solve the issue, Hunter cautions. “Wear ear protection whenever you can,” he says. “Do everything you can to preserve what you have.” After becoming licensed and certified, Hunter worked in Georgia for a
few years before moving back home. He is from Plymouth, a graduate of Plymouth High School. He is married to Keshena Hunter, and they have four children, John, Erin, Adam and Sara. To find out more or to schedule a visit, a doctor’s referral is not required. A hearing test takes about 90 minutes and can be scheduled with office staff Olivia Schwab by calling Hunter Hearing Center at 574-540-2526. where she was selling baked goods. She observed a number of folks purchasing items with reduced sugar content, and suggested to the Yoders that there might also be a following for a similar type of product here at home. In those earlier days, there were just five varieties available, but it wasn’t long until requests for additional flavors came trickling in. As the foundation of their little business was being established, there were a few life changes along the way. By 2016, they had moved to their current location and were thrilled to be able to make use of a state inspected kitchen facility. What the Yoders now referred to as their “Mom and Pop” operation was having an exceptional run, so much so that they began welcoming tours. But there was another surprise waiting, and this one was quite a bit tougher to navigate. Orla had a heart attack, rendering him unable to work fully while

he was in recovery. This prompted a discussion about whether Carolyn’s Kitchen could grow into a permanent, full-time venture. As it turned out, they needn’t have worried. “We’re busier now than we’ve ever been,” Orla says. And that menu of homemade jams has since broadened to include 23 different flavors, available in 8.7 and 2.5 ounce sizes. All of the jars are created, packaged, and prepared for distribution right on the family’s property. There are many repeat customers, Orla notes, because once a customer takes a taste of their jams, they are bound to come back for more. “Taste is the key,” Orla adds. The Yoders have become a popular purveyor at various craft shows and festivals around northern Indiana, and they are especially eager to make an appearance at the upcoming Fall Crafter’s Fair at the Michiana Event Center in Shipshewana. One of the whimsical touches that they incorporate into their travels is a doll, dressed in handmade country attire, which Carolyn found at a garage sale for $5. The couple calls him David, and he is often found diving into the sweet treats, with a few smears of jam across his cherubic face. That is always a conversation piece, Orla says, and it entices customers to give the products a try. prepared by local residents. She can also take requests to create custom gift baskets. The Yoders recently celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary, and their family includes eight children, five girls and three boys, 44 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Carolyn’s mother also resides on the farm, which means that there are currently five generations in the growing clan. Carolyn’s Kitchen is hoping to grow their business just as successfully as they’ve created their family. They are currently welcoming inquiries and accepting new retailers and accounts. The Yoders are open six days a week, with the exception of Sundays, and they can be reached by calling 260-768-8160. The operation is located at 5965-1 South 675 West, near Topeka.

SUPERIOR RESTORATION LOCAL COMPANY CELEBRATES 21 YEARS IN BUSINESS
Writer / Amy Lant-Wenger Photography Provided
When David Miller was a boy, his father owned a John Deere tractor. It was a classic piece of machinery that would likely be considered vintage today. It served its purpose well for a time, but even so, young Miller thought that perhaps it needed something extra. And so he asked his father if he could touch it up with a bit of paint.

Well, his father wasn’t keen to the request, and he eventually sold the equipment to a family member. The trusty tractor made its way through a few ownerships within the family, until Miller, as a newlywed, had an opportunity to buy the family heirloom back into his care. And at last, he was able to paint it, revive it, and design it to his heart’s content. That is the story of how Miller launched Superior Restoration, at

the family homestead in the Ligonier countryside. Now marking the 21st year of operation, Miller is gearing up to offer some new services to his customer base. Miller admits that this career venture wasn’t particularly part of his original goals, but that, over time, his reputation has grown exponentially through what he modestly admits is word of mouth. With virtually no large-scale advertising, and a fairly minimal profile, Superior Restoration has become a formidable force in the restoration and recovery of a tremendous range of items. “We cover a pretty big field,” Miller says, when asked what types of machinery he has worked with. “I couldn’t name everything we’ve done in just one day,” he adds with a chuckle. His expertise includes, but is by no means limited to, appliances, farm equipment, toys and accoutrements for the home and lawn. Miller’s customer base is equally diverse. “We do business with a lot of different shops and existing customers, but we’re always looking forward to meeting with new businesses,” he says. To that end, Miller is bringing some new additions to his current line of restoration equipment. One of the new units he is looking to

The item that is being refinished is subjected to a continual source of abrasion, while simultaneously recycling the particulates being used to perfect the finish. It can also be a preferred option for varying sizes and shapes of metals, and by utilizing the power of water, there is less of a mess created by dust. Miller enjoys showcasing some of his finished work at various shows across the region, and most recently has displayed his restoration talents throughout LaGrange County and the Antique Engine and Tractor Show in Portland, Indiana. HOW TO MAKE MUMMY DOGS Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Open your crescent roll package and unroll the dough. Press on the perforations to seal them together. Cut the dough into 1/4 inch strips. Wrap the pieces of dough around each hot dog creating bandages by stretching the dough slightly and letting it overlap and criss-cross. You don’t completely cover the hot dog, leave gaps so it looks like a mummy peeking out from its bandages. Place each wrapped hot dog on a baking sheet and then bake for 10-12 minutes or until the dough is golden brown and hot dogs are warmed through. Remove from the oven and place a small dot of ketchup or mustard on the back of your candy eyes and add 2 to each mummy dog.

Some years ago there was a popular song that beckoned to folks, inviting them to “let the sunshine in.” And while most would be perfectly willing and happy to do exactly that, it is always nice to have the option to set a different mood by adjusting the measures of light. To accomplish this, people have often chosen to utilize window treatments that are not only practical, but that serve as a decorative flourish to any room. And by enlisting the assistance of Four Woods Shades and Blinds, customers can achieve that perfect look and function with a wide variety of colors and

Formerly situated in Topeka, this small but innovative company has passed the proverbial baton to a new generation of ownership. Marlin and Dorene Yoder premiered the updated facility in April of 2021. The company features an extensive line of window dressings, including sheers, room darkening materials, roller shades, and coverings that provide sun protection, to list a few. There is a showroom on the premises that illustrates various designs and finished looks, along with sample books that customers can peruse to glimpse various colors, finishes and creations to either blend in with, or add accents to, a room’s decorative scheme. MR. ROOTER LOCAL PLUMBING BUSINESS HAS SERVED CUSTOMERS 31 YEARS & COUNTING Writer / Amy Lant-Wenger Photographer / Kari Lipscomb
When people are ailing they generally seek out the wisdom of doctors to recover. When vehicles are due for a maintenance check mechanics can provide restorative techniques for maximum performance. And when lawns become raggedy and overgrown, they are weeded, watered and mown to bring out that perfect shade of lush green. is not unlike thinking of plumbing as the circulatory system of a household. Dennise Leismer, who is the owner of the Milford affiliate location, explains the scope of what Mr. Rooter is qualified to handle. “We are a full-service plumbing and drain service business. We provide all plumbing from replacing faucets and fixing leaks to installing water and drain lines for remodeling projects,” Leismer says. “We replace main waterlines outside the home. Also, we install well pressure tanks, water heaters, water softeners and pretty much anything plumbing related, except wells.” The coverage area that this particular franchise can offer services to includes both Elkhart and Kosciusko counties. The company worked primarily in new construction plumbing when it began in 1990 but was able to add services to their professional resume in 2002.

“We are a full-service drain company,” Leismer adds. “We cable drains, hydroscrub (jet) drain lines. We do excavation to repair and replace drain lines. We have trenchless drain repair equipment to restore main lines to like new condition. We also do sewer line location. All of our service trucks have drain line cameras on them, and whenever possible, we include using the camera with a drain service on drain lines.” Leismer also has very sound advice for home and business dwellers that can help to ensure better function of their systems. “Take care of any leaks or potential plumbing problems by a licensed professional as soon as you become aware of any issue, which can save money in the long run,” she says. “Have your plumbing system inspected, including your main sewer line, and make a priority list of any repairs that need addressed.” She also emphasized the need to have plumbing inspected when considering the purchase of a new home. “Always have the plumbing system inspection, including a camera inspection of the main drain line. It is a cost that can save you thousands,” she adds.

Currently, the career climate is favorable for those contemplating a job experience in this particular field. Although, the pandemic has admittedly had a negative impact. So the opportunities are definitely there for those willing to learn and to acquire the skills. “Like so many trades, the plumbing trades
is understaffed,” she says. “There have not been as many people joining the trade as there are retiring. We have been an accredited employer with the state of Indiana to provide apprenticeship opportunities to become a licensed plumber since we started our company in 1990. We believe it is vital that men and women look at tradesman jobs, including plumbing, for a career.” Mr. Rooter is located at 305 N. Higbee Street in downtown Milford. The business hours are Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., with evening appointments also available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Saturdays are open for emergency calls only. They are hoping to be fully staffed in the near future so that they can expand their hours and services. FARM LIFE FOOD, FUN AND FESTIVALS AWAIT AT YELLOW RIVER FARMS Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided
For many people, the key to running a successful business lies in strong communication among employees. The Scherf family, who owns and operates Yellow River Farms in Knox, knows how to communicate well and also offers great products to customers. They have worked hard to establish long-running friendships with their faithful customers. Emily Scherf says the family has always operated their business that way.
They started along the banks of the Yellow River, four miles east of Knox, Indiana, in 1990.”
“I am the daughter-in-law of Co-owners Bill and Gina Scherf,” she says. “Bill and Gina, and Rose Ann Eichelberg and the late Wayne Eichelberg, opened Yellow River Farms on Highway 8.

Scherf ’s husband Evan and their daughter Grace have a lot of fun working at Yellow River Farms. It’s an experience they cherish every day. Additional employees at Yellow River Farms include Bill and Gina’s other son, Ryan Scherf. “Right now the family is busier than ever on the farm,” Scherf says. “We are growing the best vegetables and flowers for our customers.” Scherf appreciates how the business has made the family closer. “The best part about this business is how family-oriented it is,” she says. “Our family is very involved in making the farm run smoothly. All of us. We are also always working together to stay active in the community.
