Harvest With a Heart MILFORD COFFEE SHOP AND MARKET PUTS COMMUNITY FIRST Writer / Julie Yates Photography Provided 6 / THE LAKES / JANUARY 2022 / TownePost.com

Harvest With a Heart nourishes not only the bodies of Milford residents, but also their spirits. The nonprofit organization, which includes both Harvest Coffee and Harvest Market, recently found a new home at 207 North Higbee Street, and has served the community for several years. It started with the simple idea of sharing excess garden produce and has developed into an organization that strives to make a real difference in the community.

“In 2004 a group of moms were talking about what a shame it was that they had extra garden produce that was just going to waste,” says Karena Wilkinson, director of outreach and manager of the coffee shop. “The idea of setting up a card table to share the produce with the community evolved. Eventually the market moved to a pole barn and expanded as people dedicated an extra row of their gardens specifically for donating to it.”

As the years went on, the market leaders joined forces with a local food pantry. In 2017 Wilkinson began Harvest Coffee, which was initially housed in a small building. A three-year search was then conducted for more suitable space. In June of 2021 the market and coffee shop relocated together to the current location, and the food pantry found a new home in a church.

“I was a teacher for 18 years before I got the idea to start Harvest Coffee,” Wilkinson says. “There were a lot of students that were taking their own lives. I knew that more than just talk was needed to support kids and their families. This is more than just a coffee shop. It’s a place where kids can go after school and families can hang out.” The cafe offers free breakfast and lunch when school is closed. Students in grades 3 and up can take part in a vocational program. Each participant maintains a ledger sheet to keep track of their duties and hours. Tasks include sweeping, watering the garden, doing dishes and taking out the trash. Besides supporting children, the cafe leaders also plan activities and events that embrace the entire family such as movie nights. The market meets the need for fresh produce since the only food store open in Milford is Dollar General. It is supplied

A local individual donates seed and labor to plant sweet corn, which is then harvested by yet another farmer. Four jars labeled Harvest Coffee & Market, Milford Public Library, Milford Volunteer Fire Department, and HWAH Scholarship (a scholarship for a student furthering their education in the agricultural field) are set out as a way to pay for the fresh goods. It is understood that people only give what they can afford. “The market runs on Monday and Wednesday in late afternoon from midJuly through the beginning of October,” Wilkinson says. “Our long-range goal is to have things in the shop all year round. We would like to offer limited produce such as lettuce from local providers all the time.”

Wilkinson says all donations are tax deductible, and can be sent to P.O. Box 425, Milford, Indiana, 46542. They can be addressed to either Harvest Coffee or Harvest With a Heart. right move for his family. In fact, he says it “was right up my alley.”

Steven Miller likes interacting with people, and has found his niche at Sunshine Market in downtown Topeka. He and his wife Marcia purchased the former Triple L Market in October of 2021.

He gave up his organic dairy farm and turned his attention to running the store on a full-time basis. While he says he is still learning the ropes, Miller says he is happy there.

“My mother worked here and she liked it here,” Steven Miller says.

“I get motivated off the energy of other people,” he says. “Farming is a great occupation, but with the personality I had, I wilted being alone.”

Once when he was laid off from his job, Miller worked at a market and enjoyed the job. When the opportunity came to purchase the market, he thought it was the

west of the store’s downtown location. He now lives three miles east of the store. The name Sunshine Market also includes the couple’s initials and it was an immediate suggestion from family members. He says it simply felt like the right name. The store carries a variety of grocery items for the local community. Miller stocks organic produce, with plans to expand that to locally grown selections when the growing season resumes next year. He

Most of his customers are from the surrounding Amish community. He is seeing traffic from non-Amish people too.

He is also hoping to hand off the store to his children someday. The Millers have eight children, ranging in age from 2 to 14.

“The purpose of this store was to be a servant to the community,” Miller says.

A store like his fills a need in the community because local families want to support local businesses and prefer to know who is in charge. Customers recognize Miller as the owner and that is an advantage he has - and one that he says his customers appreciate.

He encourages his customers to let him know if they would like the store to carry a product. “I will try to get that in,” he says.

His customers know he is willing to work with them, whether to stock a product they want or simply to help as needed.

Miller employs two full-time employees and six part-time workers. Business is brisk and the story stays busy.

“I know what I have an interest in seeing here, but I don’t know what interests a customer,” Miller says. “If someone wants something and can’t find it, I want them to come and ask me.”

“The workers that are here have to work hard,” he says. “I appreciate that.” Miller is hoping to rearrange the store’s spaces to make it more efficient and organized. That is a project for the future.

Sunshine Market is located at 120 South Main Street in Topeka. For more information, call the store at 260-593-3002.

Magical Moments THERAPEUTIC BENEFITS ARE JUST A RIDE AWAY AT MAGICAL MEADOWS Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided

Pastor Carl Adams, executive director of Magical Meadows in Warsaw, says the therapeutic horseback riding facility was created out of a love for horses. “Tammy Stackhouse, the founder of Magical Meadows, had horses most of her life,” Adams says. “When she began to research therapeutic horseback riding, she felt that this was something that she was led to because she knew how horses were so healing in her life. With her beloved horse Magic, the two of them embarked on this journey called the Magical Meadows.” Adams, Stackhouse and their team have enjoyed how Magical Meadows has

Adams says Magical Meadows, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit, offers several therapeutic benefits. “For those with physical disabilities, the movement of the horse is how we actually move when we walk and run,” he says. “Therefore, horseback riding makes the riders’ muscles engage, even when it is difficult for them to do it on their own.” Adams says people with learning disabilities and those on the autism spectrum work on using words. We also have people who do landscaping and mowing.” Donations to Magical Meadows are encouraged and appreciated. “We are always in need of those who can financially support us, so that we can ensure that Magical Meadows continues to provide services as needed to our community,” Adams says. Adam has fond memories of growing up around the law firm, and the next generation is making similar memories. “They like to get into the office supplies and color,” Adam says. “That’s what I used to do when I was a little kid. I had no idea what went on there, I just knew that everyone was nice and it was a fun place to go.” As he grew and learned more about his dad’s work, and how much it benefited the community, he decided to make it his own vocation. In law school his dream was to join the Navy. Life took a different turn and he moved back to Plymouth, and has been working with his dad ever since.

a storefront that’s been open for 15 years and has a lengthy client list, or a three-generation farm that has acreage and machinery. “We help people find tax-efficient and familyefficient ways of getting those assets from one generation to the next so you don’t have a major tax problem, and we try to minimize any family conflict that might be there,” Adam says. The first time a client walks through the door, it’s for an initial consultation. Adam or Ken will work through what the assets are and who is in the family. “Depending on what comes from that, we go down lines of questioning - we call it the rabbit hole - what their goals are, what their worries are, and then we try to figure out which of our tools will help them,” Adam says. After that initial meeting they’ll draft a basic document. At the second appointment, they’ll look it over together to verify that it fits the client’s needs and desires. When the document is approved, the client signs it and will receive a copy. They will also receive a letter from Lukenbill & Lukenbill that summarizes the whole process, any problems that were resolved, and everything that was accomplished. For wills in particular, Adam says the client should return and review the document at least once every three to six years. “The law changes sometimes,” he explains. “Once you sign them, most of the documents we do for people are good for some years, but it’s not bad for them to dust it off occasionally.” At the end of the day, Ken and Adam find satisfaction in their customers’ peace of mind. “A lot of them thank us for helping them through the difficult time,” Adam says. “That’s the most common thing people say. The one that really touches me is when they tell us that they’ve come to think of us as family or close friends.” Lukenbill & Lukenbill is located at 501 East Jefferson Street in Plymouth. Reach out to them by calling 574-936-2007 or by emailing general@lukenbill-law.com. Visit them online at lukenbill-law.com. THE LAKES MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2022 / TownePost.com / 25

MIDWEST TOOL EXPO AND AUCTION TURNS 20

There are two distinct components to the event - the tool expo and auction, and the health and wellness fair. Miller’s Ervin Miller knows a good idea when wife Suella assists in coordinating the he sees one. That idea has become the health and wellness portion, and family Midwest Tool Expo and Auction, an event and employees at Miller’s business, E&S that is entering its 20th year and typically Wood Creations, help before and during draws thousands of visitors and multiple the expo. vendors to Shipshewana. Writer / Lois Tomaszewski Photography Provided

The 2022 event is scheduled for January 28 and 29 at the Michiana Event Center (MEC) in Shipshewana. On Friday doors open at 9 a.m. and close at 6 p.m., and on Saturday hours are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. “It is more than a two-day event,” Miller explains. “It starts with setup on the 25th and ends on the 31st with teardown. The action in between those dates is inspiring.”

In addition, the program features motivational speakers such as keynote speaker Conor Cunneen of Naperville, Illinois, who blends humor with his inspirational insights. Dr. Patrick Flynn of Green Bay, Wisconsin, will address issues around chronic health conditions. This year a seminar is planned to discuss fraud. Past topics included finances, accounting and other discussions related to the business side of the expo, as well as nutrition and dental health among other THE LAKES MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2022 / TownePost.com / 29

topics on the health and wellness side. More than $20,000 in door prizes will be given away to those attending this year’s expo. Prizes include furniture, tools, spa packages, cookware, gift cards and cash. The auction starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday, with five sales rings operating, promising exciting auction action for buyers, sellers and spectators. Miller says the expo and auction are family friendly. There is food service onsite, including free coffee for vendors and attendees. The idea for the expo was based on similar events held in Michigan and Ohio, by Miller’s own acknowledgement. He recognized the appeal of having the event in this region of the Midwest, and the

potential benefit to the community. The first show of its kind in this region began in 2002 at the Clear Spring Produce Auction barn, organized by Robert Mishler and Willis Yoder as a way for people to sell unused or unneeded tools. Miller joined the group in 2004 and the name changed to the Northern Indiana Tool Auction and Expo. It moved to the Shipshewana Auction barn. “In 2005 the auction grew in leaps and bounds with 103 booths and 53 vendors,” Miller recalls. “In the Shipshewana building we were filled to capacity with 116 booths in 2006, and the auction grew to three rings.” More space was needed and was eventually procured in 2010 in Howe, at a 150,000-square-foot building. The move further expanded the event, accommodating a fourth auction sales ring and an indoor exhibit space. It was

A good illustration of the growth and popularity of the event can be found in comparing the one-page advertising flyer for the first expo to the 112-page program guide for this year’s event. The event has also steadily outgrown its previous venues, settling into the MEC in

in the expo for various reasons, and people come from as far as 600 miles away to take part, Miller says. Some are owners and operators from the 150plus local construction, building and woodworking businesses. Others have hobby shops. Others are homeowners looking for tools or equipment to use on their property.

On average, Miller says about 10,000 people attend the event each year. It was held last year with social distancing precautions in place and was still attended by about 9,000 people. Those attending the event are interested

it continues to grow as it did in the last 10 years, we will be looking at adjusting our sails to meet the wind and waves as we grow. We have experienced many of God’s blessings over the years and our goal has always been to fill a need that this community and the surrounding areas have. BUBBLE PARTY! Writer / Abby Renz

T

he holidays have ended, and winter has set in, along with the dreaded cabin fever. The best way to get rid of those winter blues is to make your home a clean, comfortable oasis. But who wants to be trapped in a house that reeks of toxic fumes and chemicals from traditional cleaning products? Worry not, with the Full Circle bubble up scrubber and Stonewall Kitchen soaps, you can clean with peace of mind. These ecofriendly, natural ingredient products are safe for you and your family to use, just in time for Spring cleaning! Personally, when I do dishes I enjoy using natural materials that are ergonomic and don’t harm the environment. The natural walnut husk scrubbers help scrub with

ease, all while being a good alternative to plastic cleaning products. Play some music if it is just you and bring out your inner Rockstar, or make it a date night with your spouse to help make it fun. I also encourage the parents out there to involve your little ones to help you too. It can be difficult to clean when you have little ones, but involving them will teach them valuable skills and make the ‘chore’ not a chore at all! When I babysit my three-year-old nephew, I like to have him help me. First I fill one side of the sink with lukewarm water and plenty of dish soap, then I add some of his plastic dishes and even some water safe toys (bath toys work perfectly!)

I wash the dishes on my side that need to be done, and he helps me by washing his own. This is also a fun sensory activity that is productive and teaches independence and practical life skills. My nephew loves to do this as not only do we get to do something together, but we get to have fun with the bubbles. We call it our ‘Bubble Party”.

As a tip, I usually take a plastic or metal colander to help him ‘make’ more bubbles by agitating the water like a washer drum. I usually tell him when it’s time to wrap up that the water is ‘charging’ or ‘sleeping’ so our hands don’t get too pruney. This of course is after I have finished the dishes and have allowed him plenty of time to play. Then when we are all

done, there is usually some water on the floor, (it is likely to happen with a toddler doing dishes), and we mop it together. I model how to use the mop, and let him take it from there. This itself is another fun activity that parents, and grandparents can involve their kiddos with, and not worry about harsh ingredients or toxic perfumes. Plus, children absolutely love wiping down surfaces! Especially toddlers, modeling this behavior will help keep a clean house, all while teaching a valuable lesson and chasing away the boredom. Parents can use the ecofriendly products as a lesson for the older kids as well, and explain how plastic does not decompose and sits in landfills and natural ingredients and materials are better to use all around. As an aspiring teacher, fun aunt, and wife who strives to have a ‘green home’ I always feel more at ease knowing that I am supporting products that are good for my family, my home, and the Earth. I hope that this article is helpful and inspires you to do the same a have a “Bubble Party” with your loved ones.

Byron Reichart, owner of Reichart Animal Damage Control in Bourbon, Indiana, loves what he does for a living. “I really like talking to my customers and finding out what their specific needs are when they have to get rid of pesky animals like moles and muskrats,” Reichart says. “I like hearing a person’s voice over the phone, and finding out what their specific problem is. I can tell by the sound of a customer’s voice how big their animal pest problem is and what needs to be done.” Reichart can catch everything from coyotes and raccoons to moles, muskrats and groundhogs. “It’s really important to focus on the importance of trapping moles and muskrats as soon as the ice melts off the lakes and the ground thaws, to prevent property damage,” he says. “Raccoons can also really mess up a beautiful lawn. The muskrats, or as I like to call them, rats, can really cause a lot of damage to a beautiful lakefront home.” Reichart notes that moles can also damage homes and businesses. 38 / THE LAKES MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2022 / TownePost.com

“The interesting thing about moles is that they stay below the frost line in the winter, but when the warm weather comes around they are ready to cause trouble,” he says. “Moles like to eat grubs and soil organisms. They really like the earthworms. They also like to build their tunnels, and undermine soil and harm roots.” Moles also like to dig a series of living chambers and connect their tunnels, according to Reichart. “They connect their tunnels to run just about 2’ below the surface,” he said. “They push their excavated dirt to the surface in mole mounds. After that, they plug the holes. They can get a yard and home messed up quickly.” Reichart says pesky animals such as moles should be taken care of quickly. “You can have about two to four moles

per acre,” Reichart says. “For every half acre it’s two moles, and one mole per quarter mile. It’s better to take on the problem as early as possible. Moles can also really travel around and travel very far. They like to migrate to lakefront properties where they can get into a house and still be near the water.” Business is booming for Reichart’s company. “I think I’m on the verge of something really big in this area,” Reichart says. “It’s been really busy for me because there are so many lakefront properties. The animals want to be around water. Moles can dig 100’ every 24 hours. I’ve done a lot of research and I set up a lot of traps. I have a great liquid mole bait, and a mole trap that I use to get the job done. I like chasing moles. It keeps me busy and I like that.” Reichart is retired from his job as a dairy farm inspector for the state of Indiana. He worked for the state for 32 years. “I worked for the northern Indiana Board

Weed says the company is a full-service business. “Our residential services include septic tank pumping, sewer and drain cleaning, sewage pump work and leach field restoration,” Weed says. “This is one of our newer services, and we have found great success in providing the EarthBuster technique to failing systems.” Commercial services include grease trap pumping, septic tank pumping, sewer and drain cleaning, and lift station maintenance and repair. “Municipal services include manhole and lift station cleaning and repair, and sanitary and storm drain maintenance,” Weed says. “We work with many small towns around our area to provide quality, dependable service.” Industrial services include machine and

Many of them have told their family and friends about the company. “Much of our business is repeat customers, going back to the ‘80s and ‘90s,” Weed says. “Our crew is great at creating relationships and building trust with our customers. We

We even often get asked how our dad is doing by customers he worked for back in the day.” Weed and her family and co-workers love their jobs. “We do such a variety of work and no day is the same,” she says. “That makes things pretty interesting. The crew we work with is just phenomenal. They are hard-working, devoted, have excellent customer service, and are the best you could ask for.”

EDEN MEADOW BANQUETS SERVES GOODNESS IN ABUNDANCE Writer / Lois Tomaszewski Photography Provided

Booking a table at Eden Meadow Banquets is like being invited to dine with Owners Clyde and Vera Miller. In fact, for smaller parties that is exactly what happens, and for larger parties it is almost like being at home in the welcoming banquet space. The banquet hall can easily accommodate 12 to 90 people. Most of the parties booked are on the smaller scale, from around 20 to 40 people. Vera Miller recently hosted a banquet for international college students visiting the area, and the celebration of a 50th wedding anniversary attended by 86 people. She has also hosted smaller groups visiting Shipshewana and looking for that authentic taste of homemade meals. If the group is very small, she serves them in her home kitchen, joining the group at the dinner table with Clyde.

Eden Meadow

Banquets

She grew up in the kitchen, helping to prepare meals on her family’s farm. Her menu reflects that early training, and the Thrashers dinner is one of several meals she offers guests.

“Mom and I would fix the thrashers dinner when people came to fill our silo,” Miller says. “I guess I was born to do this.” The Millers started their banquet business in 2009 at their farm in Eden Township. They moved their banquet business into a building that had been previously used for the same type of business. The banquet hall sits next to the couple’s home, just TownePost.com / JANUARY 2022 / THE LAKES / 51

“I serve the dishes that I like to make,” she says.

outside the busy Shipshewana community. “I always dreamed of doing this, even when I was at home,” Miller says.

Guests choose from several different packages. The most popular is the Thrashers dinner, priced at $22 per person including tax and tip. This meal is served family-style, which means plates of food are passed around the table. The package includes a choice of two meats - chicken, baked ham, baked steak, roast beef or barbecue meatballs. It includes homemade bread with jelly or apple butter, chicken dressing, homemade noodles, real mashed potatoes and gravy, choice of vegetable, choice of salad, a dessert or mixed fruit, choice of pie, and coffee.

The Millers have been married for 27 years. They raised five children and enjoy their three grandchildren. Everything on the menu is prepared by Miller. It is a multi-step process to get everything ready for the banquets she hosts at Eden Meadow. She has a schedule memorized to prepare for each banquet. She schedules time to bake bread on banquet days, and pies the day before. Condiments like salad dressings can be done earlier in the week. Setting the table is also something she can do ahead of time to allow more time for meal preparation.

Another package is the Soup and Salad dinner, with the customer’s choice of two soups and salad, bread, three different desserts, and coffee. Soup selections are broccoli, chili, taco, chicken noodle, hamburger cheese chowder, and white chicken chili.

From salad dressings to home-baked pies, from the mashed potatoes to the fried chicken, Miller uses the recipes she learned at home to serve her diners.

The Chicken dinner package and the Haystack dinner are other popular choices among diners. Miller also offers brunch and a Breakfast Stack package. Miller’s selection of pies - also baked by her - is extensive. Pecan, cherry, raspberry, apple, peach, chocolate, lemon, banana cream, peanut butter and a no-bake cream pie are available all the time. Strawberry and rhubarb pies are only served when the required produce is in season.

Graduates of LYC’s preschool are academically and socially prepared to enter public schools.” Barger notes that the sports programs are also valuable and well-organized. “LYC’s sports programs strive to develop and promote physical health, teamwork concepts, self-esteem and leadership skills,” she says. “We offer spring and fall soccer, football, basketball, and golf and tennis camps. The programs benefit children ages 5 through 14, from all social and economic backgrounds.” The LYC team also offers numerous events. “Family and community development events provide family recreational and cultural activities to strengthen family bonds, cultivate self-respect and self-

esteem among youth, and foster positive community relationships,” she says. “The annual Daddy-Daughter Dance and Mother-Son Adventure are two examples of LYC events designed to build strong, healthy individual and family relationships.” Barger hears a lot of positive feedback from the Syracuse community.

As a nonprofit youth organization, LYC is open every day after school with activities. “The LYC office is open five days a week,” Barger says. “The preschool operates Monday through Friday, with a.m. and p.m. classes.
