WARSAW LITTLE LEAGUE TEACHES KIDS THE VALUE OF TEAMWORK Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided
Tony Clay with the Warsaw Little League says the league is valuable for young people. “The Warsaw Little League is a 501(c)(3), which certainly teaches kids the value of teamwork, dedication, discipline, physical fitness and conflict resolution,” Clay says. “The game of baseball is one of the great teachers of the game of life. It’s a game that can really knock you down emotionally, so

“The Warsaw Little League benefits the whole community as a fantastic activity which can be enjoyed by all ages,” Clay says. “Players from ages 4 to 18 will play at our parks on assorted teams, and with them come siblings, parents, grandparents, teachers and past coaches. The congenial environment of game day at the ballpark
is truly a great and therapeutic place for people to leave the troubles of the world behind for a little while. When 50,000 people pass through the gates each year, that’s a lot of much-needed stress relief in these ever-changing times.” The league, which completed its 70th season

“The Warsaw Little League has had multigenerational families through the ballpark,” Clay says. “We have grandparents watching their T-ballers play who also played their baseball games at either our current facility or at the previous sites. One of our first-ever coaches, Charlie Ker, started on here just after his senior year of high school in 1952. When he had some children later in life, he coached his own boys as a 60-something coach some 40 years later. Charlie is rightfully immortalized on the Warsaw Little League Wall of Fame, citing invaluable service to the league.” The Warsaw Little League leaders hope to have their first season of Challenger Baseball, which is a league specifically for members of the special-needs community who wish to play the game. “This would fill a need in our area, as the
closest Challenger division is at Concord Little League,” Clay says. “We’re always excited about our spring and fall seasons, which serve around 700 players combined. We also have the Warsaw Community High School junior varsity season, which uses our park as their home field most of the time.” Clay says the league brings out the best in everyone. “What I personally like best about the league is that I love that kids of all skill levels can come out to the old ballpark and get hundreds of hours of quality time with coaches and friends - time that will hopefully etch positive, happy memories which they can take with them throughout life and hopefully when they return to the ballpark as a coach, umpire or fan,” Clay says. “Watching a generation of kids go through our park over the last 12 years has been a true joy. I can’t go anywhere in Warsaw now without seeing one of ‘my kids.’ ”
YOU DREAM IT. WE BUILD IT. IT’S THAT SIMPLE. Fine Custom Cabinetry for Your Kitchen, Bath or Office
The Warsaw Little League has gone through several generations of baseball players with an ever-changing roster of volunteer board members. “As with most charitable organizations, it is only as strong as its workforce of volunteers, and we are always searching for new, capable people to add their skills to the mix,” Clay says. DANNY’S DINER LOCAL COUPLE FINDING SUCCESS IN THE RESTAURANT GAME Writer / Julie Yates Photography Provided
Open since the summer of 2021, Danny’s Diner is already gathering a following of fans who are loving the pizza, grinders and other offerings the eatery serves up. The Middlebury business is owned by local resident Danny Hochstetler and his wife Leah. Today the building has a fresh new look inside, but it’s had several different restaurant identities in the past.

Older generations knew it as a creamery owned by Vic Hooley, who sold legendary ice cream. Later it became part of the Mancino’s Italian Eatery chain. More recently, it was the site of Northridge Pizzeria. Danny, who grew up in Millersburg, met Leah when they both

worked at the Jayco RV factory. After they got married in 2018, they moved to Middlebury where Leah was born and raised. They were looking for a change when the chance to own a business presented itself. “I was intrigued with owning a restaurant,” Danny Hochstetler says. “Dips On The Vine, an ice cream shop, came up for sale but it didn’t work out for us to get it. Then this opportunity came up and we bought the business at the end of June 2021. We no longer work at the factory. The restaurant gets our full attention. We changed the name and gave it a refresh. The inside was all repainted. There’s just a bit of the old striped wallpaper left over in one corner. We redid the kitchen. A bigger oven was put in, to put out more pizza, and we scrubbed the place to get it really clean.” The carry-out pizza business at Danny’s Dinner is booming. The most frequently ordered pizza is the Meat, a specialty

Besides pizza, the restaurant also offers breakfast pizza, grinders, burgers and salads, as well as other items such as calzones, french fries, wings, breadstick varieties and cheese bread. The grinders are a throwback to when the location was a Mancino’s - the chain is known for them. Unlike cold subs, they are oven-baked and served warm. One theory is that the sandwich is a New England version of the gyro, eaten by Italian-American dockworkers nicknamed “Grinders.”

Another popular choice is the Chicken Bacon Ranch, but customers enjoy several other varieties such as the Chicken & Spinach and the Hawaiian. A gluten-free pizza is also on the menu. There are four pizza sizes, from an extra-large 16” with 10 slices to a personal size of 7”. An extra-large specialty is $19.99, while a cheese-only personal pizza is $3.49.

Among the seven salads on the menu, patrons seem to especially love the Chef and Garden salads. Of course, ice cream is a great way to top it all off.
“Many people come in with families just for the ice cream,” Hochstetler says. “I would really like to grow the ice cream side of the business, and in the future we have plans to put in a soft-serve ice cream machine. Also, I hope that someday we can have a pizza buffet.”

countries to earn income by bringing their products and stories to our markets through long-term fair trading relationships,” Eitzen says. “Our maker-to-market movement focuses on the process of the product from the start, which is from from the artisan, to the finish, which is the customer’s home.” Ten Thousand Villages breaks the cycle of generational poverty through buying from artisans in developing countries, as they do not have the resources to gain income independence as a developing country would have. “We are igniting social change through the recognition of how our product is made,” Eitzen says. “Our fair trade principles focus on that change. We make sure that there is no forced labor, especially from children. The products are made sustainably, and the group has a focus of empowering women, and many more people.” The biggest component of fair trade is
making sure the artisan is being paid a full and fair price for their craftsmanship. “How we reach our customers and help bring their product to our markets, is by sharing their stories,” Eitzen says. “We share how the product is made, because we believe that our product is more than just a material good. There is a story behind it, and there is a person who made it with care and detail. A person who has the customer’s interest in mind, while still maintaining the values of how the product is made. We believe in and support artisans in traditional craftsmanship, meaning we don’t push the use of modern technology to make things easier or quicker. We do work with the artisans, talk with them, and learn how they make the product and share that story.”
“She wanted to partner with them, to help them to find a way to bring their work to a new market so they could feed their children. Edna began selling, and sharing the stories of the artisans, on their behalf.” Edna’s action sparked a movement. “One person can make a difference, and that is really exemplified through Edna Ruth Byler,” Eitzen says. “One woman started Ten Thousand Villages, and from there, it sparked a global fair trade movement. Ten Thousand Villages is a co-founder of the World Fair Trade Organization.” As a pioneer of fair trade, Ten Thousand Villages does business differently, putting people and the planet first.
Ten Thousand Villages was founded in 1946 “We like to remind customers that our product is more than just a commodity, a by one woman: Edna Ruth Byler. material good,” Eitzen says. “By purchasing “Edna saw women who had beautiful work, our product, you are supporting a larger movement, supporting our mission. By focusing on the artisans, Ten Thousand Villages brings more life to the product, more meaning to its creation.
Behind every product is a person and a story.

necessities.” Every handmade purchase and donation directly impacts the life and community of its maker in a developing country. “As a 5019(c)(3) nonprofit, all the money made goes right back into supporting our artisan partners,” Eitzen says. “When the customer purchases or donates, it goes into purchasing product from the artisans again. We are a gateway for that to happen, the connection bridge between artisan and the customer. We are a volunteer-based organization. We rely on volunteers to help keep the costs low for the maintenance of the store, as well as other store-related expenses. The less money we spend here on our store operations, the more money we can give towards sustaining the lives of artisan partners in developing countries.” Eitzen loves working for Ten Thousand Villages.
“I enjoy working with my dynamic group of volunteers,” Eitzen says. “Getting to engage with 30 different people with different personalities, stories, and lives has been very life-giving to me. And being able to say, ‘I run a store where I have 30 different employees, and they are all volunteers’ is something special. It makes us stand out from the businesses around us. Our volunteers want to be here, want to share the stories and the impact of buying our product. When you shop with us or work with us, you become an ambassador of Fair Trade. NEW HOPE PET RESCUE SYRACUSE NONPROFIT HELPS ANIMALS THROUGH ADOPTION, EDUCATION AND MORE Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided
Cindy Brady with New Hope Pet Rescue in Syracuse, Indiana, says the pet rescue organization was formed in response to the overwhelming number of unwanted and abandoned animals in the Syracuse area. “We work in cooperation with local animal shelters and veterinarians,” Brady says. “We are dedicated to the rescue and adoption of stray, abandoned, abused and surrendered animals, and place them into loving, permanent homes. In the meantime we provide appropriate foster and veterinary care, proper nourishment, and give them plenty of love.” Brady says all of the animals in their care are treated equally.

Due to our size, grants can be difficult for us to receive because we are New Hope Pet Rescue is a nonprofit in competition with organizations such as
larger Animal Welfare leagues. We do not receive any funding from governmental sources.” Brady notes that the problem of pet overpopulation is growing. “The mission of New Hope Pet Rescue is to battle pet overpopulation by spaying and

neutering, through adoptions, and through education,” Brady says. New Hope Pet Rescue has kept its doors open with the help of their many volunteers and donors. “Both donors and volunteers are essential to the work done at New Hope Pet Rescue,” Brady says. “There are a minimum of 21 shifts that are covered by volunteers each week at the rescue. Volunteers are needed to transport animals to medical appointments, and feed cats and dogs. They also let dogs out in the evenings, do cleaning, assist with special events and special projects, and work on adoptions and fundraising.” Brady says without funding they wouldn’t be able to keep the doors open. “All donations can be tax deductible,” she says. “Monetary donations are our greatest need. Our expenses include food, litter, spay and neuter costs, medical costs such
as dental work, respiratory infections, medication and vaccinations, in addition to facility expenses. Monetary donations can be made through PayPal, Facebook or by mail.” New Hope Pet Rescue has some larger projects they would like to complete. The projects would help to improve the facility for the care of their animals. “These projects include epoxy floors, industrial-sized washer and dryer, safety upgrades and more,” Brady says. That’s where the donations really help according to Brady. “We have far more expenses than we get covered through adoption fees,” she says. “We want to keep our adoption fees reasonable, because we want all of our animals to be able to be placed into loving, forever homes.”

Fosters are also needed for dogs and kittens. “We are limited in the number of dogs and cats we can take in without help from our fosters,” Brady says. New Hope Pet Rescue also has an Amazon Wish List where people can find items that are in need at the rescue. “Choosing New Hope Pet Rescue as your Amazon Smile charity is another great way to help,” Brady says. When animals are taken in at New Hope Pet Rescue, all of the animals are microchipped, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, dewormed and treated for fleas. “Our animals can also be found through Petfinder,” Brady says. “Facebook is also one of the best places to stay in touch with what is happening at New Hope Pet Rescue.” Brady adds that the organization has been
helping animals since it was incorporated in 1994. “We have been in our current building since 2016,” she says. “Our building has a cat

room, with six large kennels that house an average of six to eight cats each. We have a kitten room, a 10-cage isolation room for cats in need of medical care, and two dog kennels.”
The adoption fees are very reasonable according to Brady. “The fees are $85 for kittens under 9 months, $45 for kittens 9 months to 2 years, and $25 for cats over 2 years old,” she says.
“The typical cost for dogs is $225.”

With the current resale market worth more than $24 billion according to the report, it’s hardly a surprise that experts believe that through the next five years, there will be more than 118.8 million new entrepreneurs joining the industry. thredUP estimates

and education,” she said. “I determined that a vendor mall was the direction to go. This utilizes my knowledge and experience in such a way that I could focus on providing small entrepreneurs and artisans an opportunity to showcase their products in retail space, with retail services provided.” When a vendor mall on Jefferson Street in Plymouth came onto the market, Thompson decided to go for it. “With some consideration and long-term plans, I saw a different vision than the current flea-market model,” she says. Instead of adopting the “multiple garage sales under one roof ” philosophy of many vendor malls, Thompson and her husband, Ken Pearl, decided to turn Twice Treasured into a premier vendor mall that showcases quality items, both pre-owned and new. Twice Treasured is located in a large building that has been a vendor mall for many years. Under Thompson’s ownership and the management of Shelby Christeson, the business houses 100-plus booths tended by more than 70 vendors. Shoppers can find all manner of treasures from antiques and collectibles to furniture and decor, to small appliances and lighting. Other stalls have kitchenware, glassware, personal-care items, dolls and toys, instruments, records and more. Thompson also saw this as an opportunity to help vendors grow entrepreneurially. “We ask that the vendors come in at least twice a month to clean, organize and restock their booths,” she says. “We provide our vendors with retail support services.” It’s not uncommon for vendors to grow in confidence as they learn how best to arrange their booth to catch the most attention, not uncommonly overgrowing their booth and needing more space. It didn’t take long for Thompson and Pearl to realize they needed more space. Instead of expanding Twice Treasured, they decided to open Twice Treasured, Too across town under the management of Bonnie Hagen. THE LAKES MAGAZINE / MARCH 2022 / TownePost.com / 27
The second location still offers a variety of products along with quality furniture, natural gemstone jewelry, candy, lamps, glassware and home decor - all varying in style from mid-century modern to antique, vintage, rustic and new. There are also several booths that display artisan homemade or upcycled items. Thompson and Pearl have several big plans for business growth and expansion. One plan is to put in a couple of other businesses under Twice Treasured, Too’s roof. Both will follow along with the store’s master plan to benefit the local entrepreneurial spirit. One business will be a group room with capacity for 15 to 20 people that will be used for small businesses and art classes. As for the other business - well, those interested will have to watch the website and social media in order to catch the latest news. “It is too soon to announce the other

Twice Treasured and Twice Treasured, Too have a lot of potential growth and renovations coming up in the next few years. Still, Thompson and Pearl continue to dream big. “As we grow, we will include additional individuals dedicated to customer service and vendor support,” Thompson says. “The business plan is to grow opportunities for entrepreneurs who want to create a successful small business. KEEPING THINGS POPPING YODER POPCORN HAS FLAVOR IN ABUNDANCE Writer / Lois Tomaszewski Photographer / Kari Lipscomb
The first thing that happens when walking into Yoder Popcorn in Shipshewana is a warm greeting and the offer of a sample bag of freshly popped popcorn. Who says no to popcorn? Apparently not very many people, which is why this family-owned company has survived and thrived for generations.
“Our sample is delicious and does not taste like any other popcorn,” says Owner Allyse Yoder. “Popcorn is a nice snack, easy to make and it’s fairly healthy.” Allyse and her husband Russ Yoder represent the fourth generation to run the popcorn business, and took over for Russ’s parents, Richard and Sharon, in 2018. In 2020, Russ and Allyse moved operations THE LAKES MAGAZINE / MARCH 2022 / TownePost.com / 37
from the family farm southeast of the current location to a brand-new building on State Road 5. This new space houses several other businesses the couple owns, with Yoder Popcorn front and center. Here, the shelves are stocked with varieties of popcorn, oils, seasonings, salts and popcorn poppers in a brand-new building that consolidates business operations and
expands the retail space. The building is so massive that Russ stores his competition pulling tractor, a Minneapolis-Moline with the name Xtra Butter, in a corner of the popcorn store. It is an attention getter, both on the tractor-pulling circuit and for the customers who visit, Allyse says. The Yoder Popcorn legacy began in 1936 with family patriarch Rufus Yoder. Mint was his cash crop. According to the family, it was Rufus Yoder who accidentally crossed two different varieties of mint, resulting in a new gum flavor for gum manufacturer Wrigley Company. Rufus also grew popcorn on a much smaller scale and shared the excess with family, neighbors and friends. Yoder popcorn became known for its high quality, and the popcorn business was launched on the site of the farmstead where it all began. Russ and Allyse farm 2,000 acres of land in the Shipshewana area. About 600 to 700

acres are planted in corn each year. All Yoder Popcorn is non-GMO. Popcorn is a delicate crop, Russ says. Planting and harvesting times vary from other varieties of corn. It grows in shorter stalks and does not take the same amount of time to grow. When harvesting, care is taken to not damage the hull, which protects the kernels and traps in moisture. “It should be handled as little as possible,” he says. Popcorn pops because the water trapped inside the kernels explodes when it is heated The red-kernel variety has a nutty taste, and to the right temperature. If that hard outer shell is compromised, the corn will not pop, blue-kernel popcorn tastes sweet. Another variety called ladyfinger has the smallest Russ explains. kernels and is almost completely hull-less. “We have had some of the same customers for decades,” she says. During the COVID-19 pandemic, customers still found their way to the store, Allyse says. The new building opened for business in the middle of the pandemic. In addition to a boost in online sales, foot traffic also increased because area businesses reopened sooner than in other places and many people were looking for somewhere to go.
There are multiple popcorn seasonings available, from butter, ranch, and salt-andvinegar flavors to pizza, bacon and cheese, and hot jalapeño. A sprinkle on top of justpopped corn adds variety to the snacking experience. Buttery toppings and oils are also sold alongside the un-popped kernels and seasonings. Gift baskets and popcornthemed novelties for popcorn-minded folks
are also available in the store and online. The store attracts a wide spectrum of customers, Allyse says. Some are tourists visiting Shipshewana, and others are passing through the area heading east or west on U.S. Highway 20. Others are returning customers.
Yoder Popcorn is also distributed to stores throughout the region, and online ordering is available. Orders are processed within a day or two most of the time, and are shipped year round. The Yoders have also supplied popcorn for school events, concession stands, special events and weddings. Often a student will stop in before school to pick up a big bag of popcorn to share with their class.

Some of the couple’s five children help from time to time. Their children range in age from 17 to 2. Russ learned the popcorn business from his parents, just like their children are doing now. Allyse says she knew nothing about popcorn until she married Russ. It was a lot to learn, she says, and one of the most important things she learned was to keep the customer happy. That was good advice because Yoder Popcorn has an appeal beyond the taste and quality of the corn. “People like the hometown feel of the store and our brand,” Allyse says. “People know us and we have plenty going on.” Yoder Popcorn is located at 920 North State Road 5 in Shipshewana. KEEPING THE WHEELS TURNING
MICHIANA WHEEL POLISHING THRIVES IN UNIQUE NICHE Writer / Lois Tomaszewski Photography Provided
Before becoming the owner of Michiana Wheel Polishing in 2017, Wayne Miller had no idea that this type of business existed. He had been looking for a business that provided the opportunity to work close to home and get out of factory work.
In five years, Miller learned the skills and techniques to run operations at his shop on State Road 13 in Middlebury. Michiana Wheel Polishing had been in business for 11 years before Miller bought it. The previous owner, Miller says, helped him learn the

“It’s a good thing to keep track of so drivers know it’s there,” he says. His equipment can handle wheel rims up to 30” in diameter. Most of the wheels he works on range from 22.5” to 24.5”. He has also done 14”-diameter rims. Michiana Wheel Polishing also specializes in most aluminum rims, as well as semi fuel tanks, semi steps, non-spoke motorcycle rims, battery boxes, tool boxes and bumpers. “I’ve done all sorts of wheels,” he says.
What he does is clean, grind and polish semi-truck wheels for a steady group of regular customers and new ones who find their way to his shop. Wheel polishing is not simply for looks - it also is a part of regular truck maintenance.
Wheels with lots of designs etched in or spoke wheels, though, are not projects Miller can do. He tells a potential customer to send a photo of the wheel to make sure it fits into what he can do and what his equipment can handle. Quality work is his goal with every customer.
When he is in the process of polishing wheels, the wheels receive a thorough inspection. Miller is looking for cracks or flaws that could become hazardous to the drivers.
“I am looking for their satisfaction,” he says. “I hope they are happy with the product when I am done.”

Ninety percent of his business comes from truck drivers. He has a few commercial accounts, for which he provides wheel polishing for those companies’ fleets of 10 to 20 trucks. Wheel polishing is a multi-step process. The wheels are taken through various polishing
speeds, with the grit count of the sanding fabric getting higher and higher each time. It starts out slowly and progresses to a faster spinning head that allows the holes on the wheel to be cut and trimmed evenly and cleanly. Any cracks or dents in the wheel are polished out and the original shiny finish eventually comes through.
Each step in the process is designed to achieve a certain result, from cleaning off the debris and the pits to polishing out the wheel. Miller replaces the sanding wheel he uses in the process multiple times because it quickly gets worn out from the sanding. Finally, the wheels are buffed. That brings

ECHOES OF THE PAST WARSAW ORGANIZATION PRESERVES AND RESTORES ANTIQUE TRACTORS Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided
Christina Morehouse with Warsaw-based Echoes of the Past says she enjoys capturing a unique part of farming history.
She says Echoes of the Past is a successful nonprofit organization with a focus on promoting the preservation and restoration of antique tractors as well as other farm equipment, accessories and artifacts.
Members of Echoes of the Past have encouraged the local community to preserve the history of agriculture though the organization.

governed by a board of nine members, four officers and five members of an advisory board.” Morehouse notes that the main goal of the club is to educate the youth and community about the history of agriculture, and the importance of preserving that history. “We hold several events throughout the year, all at no charge to those who attend,” Morehouse says. “Our main events include a tractor driving experience, which allows kids of all ages, even some adults, to give it a go. We want them to really feel what it’s like to drive a tractor, which they really love.”
“The club started in 1993 as a way to bring more attendance to the Kosciusko County Fair,” Morehouse says. “The club added the antique tractors to the fair as well as other attractions, and it has grown into what is known as Antique Village now.”
The club currently has around 130 members, and Morehouse couldn’t be happier about it.
Members of Echoes of the Past also provide vintage threshing and sawmill demonstrations to show how certain tasks used to be done, and also how technology has changed.
“We became a nonprofit 501(c)(3) in 2015,” Morehouse says. “The club is

Our latest project was the village’s gazebo, where we added concrete to avoid the muddy mess we ran into last year.” Members of Echoes of the Past also work with schools in the area, much to the delight of several teachers and students. “We have been doing a lot of school presentations,” Morehouse says. “I believe we did four or five of them last year. We take tractors, farm tools and equipment to display to the schools, and the students are able to learn about them by asking the members questions.” Morehouse says Echoes of the Past members also work with Future Farmers of America (FFA). “We are also very proud of the relationship we have with the area FFA chapters, and
also the 4-H clubs,” Morehouse says. “We are proud bidders of the 4-H auction at the fair each year. We also sponsor the FFA chapters each year. FFA chapters in 2017 and we have donated around $4,000 to the local schools.” Morehouse adds that Echoes of the Past tractors are operable. “Most of the club members use their tractors during their spring and fall plow
days, so even though they are vintage and have been restored, they are still capable of doing farm work,” Morehouse says. The tractors may also come in handy given supply-chain shortages these days. “Who knows if they may have to pull these out to help with planting in the spring?” Morehouse says. “The sad part is that most people won’t know what to do with them.” Morehouse says the local community has responded very well to the club.

Eisenhower Elementary School in Warsaw. “All children deserve a chance to play and to be included,” Hausmann says. “My daughter was my starting point for beginning this
campaign, but the truth of the matter is that our school playgrounds should include all children and cater to children of all abilities.” Hausmann’s daughter Addy is a first grader. She has a very rare disorder that limits her physical mobility. As Hausmann described on the GoFundMe page she created to raise money for the project, called A Playground for Every Eagle, Addy uses a wheelchair and a gait trainer, neither of which can help her get to the playground at her school because of the mulch surface cover. Hausmann says Addy stands off to the side on the sidewalk and watches all her friends enjoy the playground equipment and play together. “Often, the learning that happens out on the playground is taken for granted in the school building and planning process,” Hausmann says. “The engagement that happens outside on playgrounds, especially in early elementary school, sets the stage for

healthy, long-lasting relationships and better humans in our community. Right now our playgrounds are not allowing that for all children, so it’s my mission to create that environment at Eisenhower and hopefully other schools in our community.” Hausmann is in the fundraising stage, which began in October. She has lined up some possible grants from organizations and collected about $5,000 towards the $230,000 goal for phase one of the plan. She is partnering with other organizations and is planning additional fundraisers. The estimated total to renovate the two playgrounds at Eisenhower Elementary is $450,000. The first phase that focuses on the lower playground needs $233,000. The first phase of the playground redesign includes adding a large play structure with wheelchair-accessible ramps, oversized shade umbrellas, and sensory music panels. Oftentimes, excellent things start small. Disney as we know it today started with a sketch of a mouse in a train car. Amazon began as an online bookstore in a garage. Eric and Tammy Lane were staff members at Warsaw Community Church when they decided to do something about the homelessness they saw in their area. “They started this back in 2010,” says Brooke Lane, Eric and Tammy’s daughter as well as the homeless shelter director. “They

were housing people from January 1 to March 1 in their old offices. Then, March 1 came around and my mom and [Eric] said, ‘Just because winter is over, that doesn’t mean they’re not homeless anymore.’ ” At the time there were five men sheltering with the church. Eric and Tammy decided to go the extra mile. They found a rental house for those men where they could be safe and have a roof over their heads. It

“I had my 11th birthday party at the guys’ house,” Lane says. “It became family and like second nature. This is what God has given us.” Since then the ministry has grown, with more coming in all the time. In due time, Lane was influenced by her parents’ love for the ministry. “[God] has given me a passion for it - to be in relationship with people, to serve people,
to sit with people, and watch their lives transform and see the testimony from what God does,” Lane says. When someone new comes through the doors of Fellowship Missions, the shelter staff has a friendly conversation and interviews the newcomer. “We try to sit and talk to them during that intake,” Lane says. “We try to get to know them. We give them about a two-week emergency stay.” During those two weeks, the Fellowship Missions staff works with the newcomer to devise a plan going forward. “We have programming, but we want to make sure that it’s individualized to that person so that we can minister to them where they’re at,” Lane says. “There are some people who can get jobs right off the bat and others can’t. We try to figure out, ‘What do they need in this moment?’”

Through their recovery program, they are able to help many people. For difficult cases, Fellowship Missions partners with a free, 12-month recovery program in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. ONCE UPON A PERSON LOCAL COUPLE TAKES PRIDE IN CONSIGNMENT AND HOUSEHOLD GOODS SHOP Writer / Lois Tomaszewski Photography Provided
If you look for it, there’s a good chance you can find what you need without having to travel long distances. Once Upon A Person, owned by Ray and Marlene Miller, is just the kind of place to help with such a task. “I had always dreamed of working in or owning a store,” Marlene Miller says. “I like to organize and help people out. It makes me feel good to have something here that people need.” Once Upon A Person is both a consignment store for the Amish community and a
general household goods store. For many in the community, it saves a long trip to town for needed supplies. The store is located behind the house Miller grew up in on West 1100 North. Baby items and household goods are also available in the consignment section of the store. There is also a large selection of used Amish clothing in children and adult sizes.
New fabric, sewing notions, buttons and thread fill up a section of the store. Other shelves are stocked with handkerchiefs, hair ties, socks, gloves and hats. Gift items and cards are part of the inventory, and her customers can also find household necessities like kitchen utensils. The store’s toy section, which is 5-year-old Myra Miller’s favorite, includes Melissa & Doug toys, books, puzzles, games and fun stuff to do. The Millers’ only child is a good helper in the store according to Myra and her mom.
Miller says consignment provides an inexpensive way for people in the community to have what they need. It also helps the local families receive some income for clothes and items they no longer need. “My customers come in for the used items, but they can buy new items too,” Miller says. the stock and keeping the store clean. Those are two of her priorities. She wants her customers to enjoy shopping in a clean environment with quality items. Her attention to quality applies to the consignment items that she offers. She is careful to take only the items that are in good condition. “I want to keep quality clothing in here that people want, so people will continue to come back and look through it,” she says. “I want to keep what will move.”
Marlene and Ray will mark nine years of marriage in June. Family is important to the Millers. She is thankful that she can still take time away from the store, such as on those Wednesdays when she gets together with her mother and sisters-in-law. Meeting with her family members regularly, as she did before she became a store owner, is very important to her. “It’s wonderful to know that I have someone who can watch the store for me,” she says.

Becoming an owner of a store has been a positive experience for Miller. She did not have any experience, so even learning to operate the cash register was among the skills she has mastered in the last year. It is a task she enjoys. “I do enjoy the people who come in here and talk with me,” she says. She also enjoys getting in the products that people need. Miller finds out what her customers are looking for, and is always on the lookout for new products to bring into her store. She will even make a special order to accommodate a need, such as the proper fabric color for a bride’s upcoming wedding. That means planning so that she has enough supplies that will be available in time. Visit Once Upon A Person at 8638 West 1100 North, southwest of Nappanee. Call them at 574-354-8452.
