LEDGEVIEW BREWING COMPANY RESTAURANT AND BREWERY CONCEPT FINDS SUCCESS IN WARSAW
Writer / Amy Lant-Wenger Photographer / Timothy Hare
Launching a new business can often be considered a gamble. Imagine trying to accomplish such a goal in the midst of a global pandemic. Not only did Ledgeview Brewing Company Owners Craig and Abby McLaren realize such a vision, but they have also become a force in capturing the unique character of Hoosier cuisine with a leisurely vibe.
The owners are just shy of celebrating their first full year in business. As the lunch crowd ambles through on a typical weekday afternoon, many of the diners seek out the McLarens as they depart, offering praise and declaring that they will return. Already the establishment has a loyal following, and Ledgeview Brewing Company’s reputation for crafting some of the finest brews and most flavorful barbecue around is rapidly growing. Abby is a native of Goshen, and upon completing a course of study at Indiana

University, opted to travel east to further her education in culinary arts. While there she met Craig, who was also gathering knowledge and experience in a similar field. The couple eventually settled in Massachusetts and became parents to two children, now at ages 8 and 5. Craig, by this time, had earned some prestige as a professional chef, and he was working full time creating dishes primarily within the hospitality field. All the while, he was carrying with him the wisdom of his
mother, who had a talent for cooking as well. Craig recalls being about 12 years old and approaching his mother to ask for French toast, only to be told that he could prepare it himself. “To this day she still can’t make it the same as me,” Craig says. Eventually Abby thought that perhaps Craig needed a hobby, something to help him channel his energy while away from the rigors of his job. She gave him a gift that changed their lives tremendously - a home brewing kit. As luck would have it, Craig not only thoroughly enjoyed creating his own styles of beer, but he was also quite excellent at it. Within a year, he was already receiving accolades for his brew. He christened this venture the Ledgeview Garage Brewery, appropriately named for the home base from which the beer was flowing.

It was around this time that Craig confessed to feeling a touch of burnout. “The years of working at hotels was beginning to wear on me,” he says. In sharing those sentiments with his wife, they pondered what they should do, and how to make it happen. It seemed quite logical and natural to them to combine their passions of cooking and brewing. When Abby revealed that she and Craig were entertaining the possibility of opening their own restaurant, and further described the atmosphere and dining options they were considering, a friend informed them that a space occupied by a restaurant and brewery had recently closed in Warsaw. They visited the site and toured the building in fairly short order, and were impressed, although they had many questions. “We knew it had the space we needed and the materials we needed, but we wanted to make

sure the business was legit,” Craig says. After becoming fully convinced, the McLaren family headed to Indiana - back home, in Abby’s case. Although the buying process was impeded by constraints related to the pandemic, the couple went straight to work renovating over a period of several months. It was a time that Abby humorously refers to as the “renew, reuse, recycle” period. Whenever possible, reclaimed materials were used, along with much of the original building design. Ledgeview Brewing Company officially opened for business in December of 2020. The restaurant’s menu boasts many comfort food favorites such as chili, ribs, burgers and salads, as well as pulled chicken, beef and pork. Craig’s New England heritage is woven into his food preparation, as are hints of Indiana flavors, such as green beans and bacon, ranch potato salad, and sweet potato fries.
“This is a scratch kitchen,” Abby says. Everything is prepared in-house with family recipes, and the beer menu is evolving with multiple choices. Most guests come for the barbecue. Craig works to combine regional influences from Texas, St. Louis and Memphis. Diners can dig into the experience right inside the dining room, or they can request carry-out to indulge at home. “We have a lot of ideas that we’re wanting to execute,” Craig says. “We want to become part of the local beer festivals and do more work with food trucks, and maybe add some music.”

The owners are also thankful for the guidance they’ve been given from other restaurateurs in the area. “The community has been so welcoming and helpful,” Abby says. Ledgeview Brewing Company is located at 975 Warren Street in Warsaw. For more info, visit ledgeviewbrewing.com or call 574-376-4445.

JOE’S ICE CREAM SUPREME SY RACU S E - B AS E D S H O P SCO O P S UP PLENTY OF SU M M E RT I M E F L AVO R Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Jubilee Edgell
Summertime and ice cream go hand in hand. For locals and folks who come for the lake life, that means plenty of visits to Joe’s Ice Cream Supreme in Syracuse. For many, a trip to Joe’s on a warm summer night is a tradition. The Yoder family enables memories to be made as they continue to own and operate the 18-year-old business. “It’s been open since 2003,” Dawn Yoder says. “It was my husband’s grandpa’s dream to own an ice cream shop. His name was Joe. He designed it and had it built. It still looks pretty much the same except the patio, where the tables are, has been expanded. Joe passed away shortly after it first opened.” It’s a seasonal business, and Joe’s usually opens toward the end of April. It signals the beginning of summer and good times ahead. It remains open until the third week in October. While school is in session, it only operates on weekends. During peak months, its hours are noon until between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. During an extremely busy night, it might remain open even longer.
The regions premier one stop shop for embroidery, screen printing (over 200 colors to choose from), textile laser embroidery, laser engraving, direct to garment, heat transfer, wide format printing, car, wall & window decals, vehicle wraps, yard signs, banners, and rhinestone designs.

“New this year is that we are offering Dole Whip, which is a gluten- and dairy-free pineapple soft serve,” Yoder says. “Soft serve and hand-dipped ice cream are our biggest sellers, with the flavors of butter pecan, mint chocolate chip, peanut butter cup and blue moon as the most popular. There are other often-ordered flavors but those four are always at the top.” Customers are typically lined up at the shop, waiting to order their favorite flavors. There are many options to pick from, and several different flavors of soft serve and hand-dipped ice cream are available along with specialty sundaes, floats, sodas, slushies and more. Nothing on the menu for an individual order is over $6. Soft-serve cones are priced around $3, while an upsidedown banana split is $5.99. Customers can carry home quarts of soft serve, homemade custard and hand-dipped ice cream as well. “In recent years, people are trying more than just hand-dipped cones,” Yoder says. “They are mixing flavors. Sundaes are ordered a lot. We created a Reese’s one with hot fudge and peanut butter cups over a mound of vanilla ice cream, topped with whipped

cream and a cherry. We serve chocolate and cherry sodas, which a lot of places don’t do anymore. One lady came in and ordered a chocolate soda. She said her grandfather had owned a dime store and she would get chocolate sodas there as a kid. She told us exactly how she wanted it, with a lot of chocolate. Afterwards, we watched for her so we could make sure her chocolate sodas were made just the way she liked.” Both of Yoder’s children work at the shop. It also provides employment for about 20 other teenagers during the season. Since it is open every day of the week during peak summertime, many hours of work need to be put in by the team. The employees seem to have a great time as they gain experience at the store. When asked about the future of Joe’s Ice Cream Supreme, Yoder says she and her husband Jim hope their kids keep it running. “It’s hard to tell what path they will go
in, but putting in the hours at the shop is a great way to teach them a work ethic,” Yoder says. “I don’t see Joe’s slowing down. Ice cream is timeless. It brings back memories so many people have. I hope it continues. We are a family-owned business and we try to make sure each customer feels like they are the most important person to us while

BACK TO SCHOOL TIPS AND IDEAS FOR PARENTS AND KIDS
Writer / Abigail Hake Photography Provided
Last year was rough, but we made it and I know we are all ready to get back to something resembling our old routines. While some aspects of our lives slowed down with classes and sports being cancelled, other areas ramped up with working from home, having our kids around full time (and never leaving our sides), and playing teacher. Perhaps the most exciting thing about the upcoming school year is that it will likely be fairly close to normal, which means it’s time to prepare and get ready. Here are a few ideas for enjoying back-toschool preparation like it’s meant to be enjoyed.
GET SUPPLIES You deserve a little shopping spree, even if it is for pencils and other school supplies. Don’t give in to the purchasing of supplies that will be boxed and ready for your kids this year. Gather the lists of what they’ll need and make a day out of it. Your kids need to get out and learn how to behave in stores again too, so this would be a fun way to remind them of those manners they used to have, and you can reminisce about all the home-schooling moments from last year at the same time.
BUY REAL CLOTHES As a parent you’ll need these again too, for ice cream socials and parent-teacher conferences, but I’m talking about school clothes for your kids. As much as I hate to admit it, my kids fell into wearing pajamas and/or sweatpants all day too. Head to the mall (yes, they
TownePost.com / AUGUST 2021 / THE LAKES / 17
are still there) and let your kids pick out some items that will make them feel good. Make the experience even more fun by having a try-on session or fashion show when you get home. Create a TikTok or Reels video and you’ll be the cool parent too. It might seem silly and I know most everyone does back-to-school shopping in one form or another, but this year try to make it a little more special.
PREPARE A BACKTO-SCHOOL BREAKFAST Plan to treat the kids to special breakfast foods before they head out to school on the first day. If you want to enjoy one last long breakfast with them, plan it for the day or weekend before they start. If your kids love doughnuts, you can spice it up by making a doughnut decorating bar with some of their favorite toppings. It’s not that complicated and they’ll love it.

You can also take this in another direction, and plan a back-to-school breakfast for you and the other parents on the block, with bagels and mimosas to start as soon as the kids get on the bus. Maybe even bust out the party on the lawn. Let’s be real - we’re excited they are going back, so why not celebrate?
SET A SCHEDULE NOW While I know it’s summer and schedules should be a little more laid back, save yourself the morning drama by implementing the bedtime and wake-up times now. Just do it, before it’s too late and you are screaming at your child to wake up and then running to flag down the bus. They might not like it, but it’s going to help everyone out in the end and make for calm and lovely mornings. No promises that your children will take to said schedule - mine still don’t get it and we are heading into the fourth grade - but it’s worth a shot.

BE PREPARED As much as I hate to say this, buy a couple masks and mentally prepare for anything. We don’t know how this fall will go down, and you don’t want to be the one searching everywhere for masks when they are all gone. Grab a disposable pack now while they are everywhere. Stock up on other things too, like disinfectant wipes for you and the class, hand sanitizer, and Kleenex, so you can be prepared should the available inventory take a dive.
THANK YOUR TEACHERS We are all going to have new teachers in our lives come August, about whom we know very little, but thank them anyway, every time you see them. Thank them for emailing you that your child didn’t behave very well on a certain day. Thank them for sending your sick child to the nurse. Thank them for just being them, and sticking through all this like champs. They really deserve more than thanks, but just keep thanking them and letting them know how appreciated they are. We wish you a wonderful almost-fully-back-to-normal school year!

ALL IN THE FAMILY
Sunrise Metal Shop Continues an Ongoing Legacy Story & Photography Provided
In 1958 brothers Clarence Slabaugh and John Helmuth saw a need for metal work in their community. That year the pair opened Topeka Metal Shop. John’s investment provided equipment, but their father Jake ran the shop with help from Clarence when he was free from his full-time work in construction. The brothers provided their father with the meaningful work he sought after retiring from his saw mill. After a few years Jake replaced John as an owner, and Jake’s daughter Katie joined the business. Initially the family focused on providing feeders, fountains and ventilators to the local farming community. They provided supply tanks for the early iconic Shasta RVs and plumbing implements. Around this time Clarence
departed to focus on his construction business, and Katie and her new husband Enos Kuhns partnered with Jake. Enos was working full time in a factory. After work he would come home and spend time with his wife and children. Each evening he headed out to work in the shop. Enos took on the more complicated tasks and precision work that had become too difficult for his father-in-law to complete. He often worked late into the night when there were pressing jobs that needed to be finished. Every nook and cranny of the shop was packed with equipment, sheets of metal and jobs

in progress. John Kuhns recalls spending time in the shop as a young boy. Many evenings in a corner of the shop Enos would be soldering at his work bench. At 5 years old John was happy to hold an old gas lantern so dad could see his work. That was 1967, and that project became one of the earliest kitchen range hoods the shop produced. In 1971 the name was changed to Sunrise Metal Shop. During those early years the maple industry was thriving, and requests would come in to repair or replace maple evaporators. In 1972 they built a large custom pan for a local sugar bush. The pan is still in use today. Through the years evaporators would become a larger part of the business. Techniques would change from soldering to more precise welding. The shop’s products grew with the needs of the community, and the materials changed to

In 2009 the shop moved to its current location. The business produced complete maple syrup evaporators, commercial water bath canners, dog feeders, outdoor kitchens, and a variety of custom jobs designed to meet the needs of customers. Around this time more requests came in for larger and more elaborate range hoods. The process started on paper - first a basic drawing, then something a little more complicated. With their ideas worked out on paper, the team began the prototype
process. They experimented with creating smooth curves with the roll forms and different angles, honing their craftsmanship along the way. They always returned to pencil and paper for new ideas. Designs with new materials eventually led to their technique of aging different metals, and applying new and unique finishes. That same year expansion began on the shop. The Sunrise team began to focus on increasing productivity, with new manufacturing techniques and improvements in efficiency. Brainstorming began for new products to offset the uneven production year created by the high demand for maple products in the fall and winter. In the first meeting, John’s son Devon suggested that they consider designing and building a grill. The initial idea was dismissed, as no one on the team could imagine building runof-the-mill grills. A few

months later talks started back up. Devon returned to the idea of building a grill. John says that this time he understood. Unwilling to compromise on quality, John knew there was only one side of the market their grill could fit in, and that was the highest end - a grill that would outlast generations and keep going. The entire team began work on the first designs for what would become the Silver
Rocket Grill. Many iterations came to life on paper. Eventually the initial design was settled on. With four generations of experience, persistence and dedication to craftsmanship, the original grill looked very much like the latest model. This is not to say that improvements haven’t been made the vents have been moved to the front, the top exhaust was redesigned from a straightpipe exhaust to its current cone-like design, efficiency has improved, and gasification makes the most of the lump charcoal used. With the success of the first grill came new additions and features including the smoker-baker attachment, the cold-smoke hopper, and the flat-top griddle. These are just a few of the new features, with designs being worked up for new upgrades constantly. New ideas don’t just come from the shop. John, and the entire team, have the utmost respect for their customers and dealers, and will always listen to ideas and suggestions. Those suggestions don’t always make it past the pencil-and-paper stage, but the ones that do will always add value. Through the years products and techniques have changed. What never changes is the THE LAKES MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2021 / TownePost.com
persistent desire to provide something of value, of high quality, that improves the lives of customers. In 2004 Enos Kuhns passed away. The family started the conversation of what the next step would look like for them and for
the shop. From these discussions a new partnership was formed between John and Susie Kuhns, their son Devon Kuhns and his wife Inez, as well as their son-in-law Lee Miller and his wife Edna Fern. This partnership was a new dawn of the legacy that is Sunrise Metal Shop. That legacy reaches further as John and Susie’s other children have come on board. Marilyn works at the front desk, always happy to greet anyone who comes in. Steven provides customer service, and helps answer the phones and whatever questions arise. Delmar and Galen work in production at the shop, mastering the craft their greatgrandfather passed down. At 16 years old, John’s Grandson Kevin, working in production, is the first of the fifth generation. Family accounts for more than half the employees at the shop. Sunrise Metal’s story is not the story of any one person, but of a family and their devotion
for God, their love for one another, and the quality of work that this can create. In the families’ own words, it is a blessing and a gift. John, Devon, Lee and the entire family invite you to visit the shop and get to know them, and discover what they make that will add value to your life.

THE WO NDER OF W H I S KS F I N DING THE RIG HT WHISK FOR YO U R K I TC HEN C R EATIO N S Story & Photography Provided
I would bet that the majority of you reading this article have a whisk in your kitchen. You may even have two or three, but did you know there are many different styles of whisks, and each style has a unique purpose? I don’t know how many kinds of whisks there are in the world, but for the purposes of this article I will focus on seven different styles that we carry at New Kitchen Store. Let’s start with the classic or balloon whisk, the one most people are very familiar with. It is called a balloon whisk because the wires on the end of the handle resemble a balloon. The wires tend to be springy, and with a whisk movement means air is being incorporated into whatever is being whisked. This whisk is considered a multipurpose whisk. It is perfect for making whipped cream, meringue, scrambled
eggs and egg whites, as well as sifting dry ingredients in recipes. A dough whisk, also known as a Danish whisk, is very popular among professional and home bakers alike. The wire of the Danish whisk is thicker and more rigid than most other whisks. The end is flat and features an outer circle with an inner oval
and loop. Because the wire is rigid, it is perfect for working heavier dough without overworking the dough ingredients. Its unique shape is helpful for mixing dough and batter, creating a smooth batter. The end results are baked goods that rise high and have a pleasing crumb. Another whisk not often found in the

The end is very springy and is shaped like an oval cone. The method of using a spring whisk is much different than most other whisks. Instead of whisking in a circular motion, you pump the whisk up and down. Because of this, you can use it in glasses to make chocolate milk for your child, for example, or in any other tall jar to blend together your favorite homemade salad dressing. There are even whisks that have small wire balls inside them. These are variations of balloon whisks. The small wire aerator ball inside also has a smaller, solid metal ball inside of it. So, it’s a ball inside a ball, inside the balloon whisk. The purpose for so many layers is to incorporate more air into what you are beating, so you can get to the “stiff peak” stage of hand-beaten egg whites quickly. We all enjoy a good arm workout once in a while, but any baker knows that whipping egg whites into stiff peaks takes the arm workout to a whole new level, and speeding up the process is a
relief to aching arm muscles. Making smooth, lump-free gravies and sauces should not be difficult. There are two whisks that are equal to the task of making delicious gravy. First is the gravy or sauce whisk. It makes all the difference THE LAKES MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2021 / TownePost.com
when smoothing the lumps out of your gravy. Its special design breaks up the lumps while you cook. You can use this whisk two different ways - flat, to prepare pans for deglazing, or at an angle, to whisk together gravy. Its angled head reaches all
those hard-to-reach edges of pots and pans, keeping things moving and preventing overheating and scorching. Second is the flat whisk, also known as the roux whisk. It is shaped like a balloon whisk that has been flattened. It is similar to the gravy/sauce whisk in that it easily reaches the edges of pots and pans to make sauces and to scrape the bottoms of pans. You will love how these whisks take the guesswork out of gravy preparation. The French whisk is similar to the balloon whisk, but the end is more narrow and elongated. The wires are also slightly thicker. These wires are perfect for mixing together heavier ingredients, yet they are still flexible. The shape of the whisk’s narrow end fits nicely into the edges of pots and pans to help prevent food from burning. These whisks are perfect for sauces, gravies, vinaigrettes, batters, custards and more.
Anyone who has built or created something knows that having the correct tool for the job makes all the difference. Having the right whisks for different jobs in the kitchen is no exception. Not all whisks are created equal, and no single whisk is perfect for every job. Now that you know a little bit more about the
differences in whisks, come into New Kitchen Store and pick up one today. New Kitchen Store, located at 330 Liberty Street in Walkerton, is the largest gourmet kitchen supply store in Michiana. For more information, call 574-586-2745 or check out NewKitchenStore.com.

PUPPY PE OP L E LASTING LEGACY PUPPIES AIMS FOR A SPECIAL PET EXPERIENCE Writer / Lois Tomaszewski Photography Provided
Puppies are, to many people, irresistible. Cuteness overload, however, can lead people to make the wrong choice in a puppy. At Lasting Legacy Puppies, Owners David and Vonda Slabaugh work hard to make sure the puppy their customers choose is the right fit. The couple has been raising puppies at their farm in Bremen since 2014. It is a home-based, family-run business that gives the couple something to do, and an opportunity to teach their four children the important lessons of hard work and responsibility. The Slabaughs have two sons and two daughters, ranging in age from 3 to 14. “I grew up with dogs on my family’s farm,” David Slabaugh says. “I would bring the cows up to the barn with a dog at my side.” Slabaugh just completed a new climate-controlled facility to house his breeding operation. The building has in-floor heating, ventilation systems, and a grooming and bathing area. There is also a retail office and feed room. The new facility provides more space for the puppies to become socialized and used to being handled - tasks that are assigned to his children. All Slabaugh puppies are handled from shortly after birth, he says. The puppies are accustomed to being held and examined. Currently, Lasting Legacy offers goldendoodles, mini poodles, dachshunds and French bulldogs. Each breed has specific characteristics that make it suitable for families or individual owners. For example the goldendoodle, a hybrid golden retriever and mini poodle breed, is typically an outgoing, friendly and high-energy
dog according to Slabaugh. Mini poodles can also be high-energy and are very popular. Buying a puppy from the Slabaughs is not a oneand-done process. It all starts with choosing a puppy from a photo on their website. Once the puppy is selected, the customer puts a deposit down to secure that puppy. The customer is then given regular updates on how the puppy is growing. They are also welcome

to visit the puppy as it grows up, until it is ready to leave at 8 weeks of age. “Once a puppy leaves here, we send a gift bag along,” Slabaugh says. “It has a blanket in it that has the smell of mom and its siblings.”
This scented blanket helps the puppy adapt to a new home because it is familiar. Other items in the gift bag include a probiotic to help with stomach upset and nervousness. The new owner is also given an education in puppy training. Slabaugh suggests that every puppy be crate trained. This

provides a routine, gives the puppy a safe place to sleep at night and can aid in potty training. Slabaugh also suggests that puppies be given toys to keep them occupied, especially chew toys. Just like teething children, puppies need something to gnaw on as their teeth develop. Having a chew stick or some other dog-appropriate toy can keep the puppy from finding alternatives, like a pair of shoes, the corner of a furniture piece or even a piece of clothing. Exercise can also use up that puppy energy and keep the puppy from getting into mischief. If that happens, it is important that puppies, like children, are disciplined. The key to successful puppy ownership is consistency, Slabaugh says. The goal is to make sure the puppies find a home that will provide all the things they need, and fulfill the needs of their owner. “We are here for 100% satisfaction,” Slabaugh says. “It’s an animal so we can’t guarantee it will be perfect, but if there’s a problem I want our customers to give us a call.” The health guarantee on the company website says all puppies come with a one-year health guarantee that covers any genetic or hereditary health issue. Puppies who leave for their new home are up to date on vaccinations and deworming medicine. Slabaugh’s hope for each of the puppies, and the people who buy them, is that the experience leads to a lasting legacy, meaning pleasant memories that can be reflected upon in the future. t first glance, Warsaw Women’s Center might seem like a fairly typical medical facility. Moments after entering, however, it soon becomes apparent that this is not the case.

There is an air of hospitality about the place. Intimidating and austere it is not. The sounds of gentle voices and an occasional good-natured laugh can be heard within the walls, swathed in a palette of soft colors and sun-dappled windows. Even before the patients ever encounter a member of the staff, guests are made to feel welcome, nurtured, and perhaps most importantly, safe. This is a theme that resonates when reading a stack of comment cards left by current and former patients. When meeting with Kellie Parker, FNP, and Sarah Bailey, WHNP, the women appear downright modest over the praise lavished upon the distinguished team of health-care providers. Rounding out the staff are Jen Bohnenkamper, office manager, and physicians Dr. Timothy Cook and Dr. Donald Durecki, both MDs. Cook and Durecki have been in practice since 1988 and 2000, respectively, and Bailey has been part of the team of professionals since 1997. Parker joined the staff in 2018. Warsaw Women’s Center actually dates back to 1984, and was formerly located elsewhere in the Warsaw area. The current site has served as home base for the past 21 years. “We have anything a girl would want or need,” Parker says of the facility. Those seeking care at Warsaw Women’s Center can be assessed for a wide array of physical and mental health issues.

Surgical procedures that are considered minimally invasive are also available, including one relatively new innovation known as a robotic hysterectomy. This enables the doctor to maneuver instrumentation precisely with the aid of robotic technology, combined with lighted and miniature instruments. It allows for complete removal of the uterus with fewer and smaller incisions. Those who have undergone this type of surgery have reported less time in recovery, fewer complications and a swifter healing process. Genetic testing is another advancement that Warsaw Women’s Center can offer to expectant mothers. Such testing can be a source of early detection for disorders that can affect an unborn child, and the results can then be used to determine a course of treatment once the baby is born. Another benefit of genetic testing is the ability to learn the child’s gender sooner than the

more traditional, 20-week ultrasound. In most instances, parents can receive the news on whether they’re expecting a boy or a girl as early as 10 weeks. Warsaw Women’s Center also offers screening tests for hereditary and genetic cancer risks. Knowing personal and family history is the first step in determining if you might be at an increased risk for cancer. Receiving positive test results for cancer empowers patients to create a personalized plan to prevent and identify cancer at an earlier, treatable stage, or to prevent secondary cancers. In situations where a more specialized type of treatment is likely, the physicians and staff are willing to direct patients via referrals to a facility designed to work with those in need. Another attribute that has drawn patients to Warsaw Women’s Center is one that is
very evident in even the simple act of conversation. There is a level of empathy at the facility, and a desire to truly connect with what women are conveying. This degree of dedication is what compels Parker to drive to and from Mishawaka each day to be with patients. “I love this job,” she says. “Patients are so appreciative of what we’ve done, and the way that we listen,” Bailey adds. “We enjoy being able to support them.”

Follow that cute black trailer with the purple striped logos down the road, because it’s sure to be on the way to a fun event or festival.
“Wible’s Ladies Apparel was very successful,” Wood says. “My mom and dad had it for almost 25 years until Walmart and other big-box stores came into the area. I was an only child and I’d go with my mom on buying trips for the merchandise in the store. I remember going to Hall’s Guest House in Fort Wayne where salesmen set up displays in hotel rooms. Sometimes we would go to market in Chicago. I’d walk to the store after school. It was open from when I was in third grade until I was 23 years old, before it went out of business.”
Chasing Squirrels Boutique, owned by June Wood, is a mobile and online boutique selling fun and trendy women’s clothing and accessories. During the spring and summer the shop travels to where shoppers are, and during cold weather merchandise is available through its website.
When Wood’s parents shut the store and moved to their lake cottage full time, she thought about taking it over, but she had two small children at the time and was too busy. Sixteen years ago, while living in LaGrange, she opened June’s Ladies Apparel. After taking over a floral shop, she named her business Pants to Plants. Eventually it became June’s Floral and later the Corner Flower Shop.
June Wood’s interest in fashion began in 1978 when her family moved from Auburn to Wolcottville. Her mom wanted to find a job and her dad teasingly doubted that she could. As a result,
“The floral business did really well but the clothing part didn’t work out,” Wood says. “During the time that shop was open, I moved back to Wolcottville. After a few years we closed the store.

I had always wanted to do trunk shows where I would hold an event in someone’s home or a retail location. I looked into some companies, and to start up with them required $6,000 to $9,000 up front. It wasn’t going to work. Then about a year ago, we found a trailer for sale.” Following pandemic rules, Wood started Chasing Squirrels. After launching a website for online sales and a Facebook page, she began taking the trailer to Shipshewana on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. During the warm months, she and her husband John traveled to events and festivals such as the Hippie Living Fair in Angola, as well as Michigan and Missouri. Future plans involve attending venues as far away as the Farmhouse Living Fair near Nashville, Tennessee. Closer to home, the shop’s trailer will be at LaGrange, Middlebury, and The Barns, formerly Amish Acres, in Nappanee. Dates for events are listed on the Chasing Squirrels Facebook page. Wood’s family is involved in the business. Her daughters Madison Bateman, Alexis Grossman, Maci Prill, and daughter-in-law Lindsey Prill, are models for her Facebook photos and on the website. Although shipping is available for a flat $5 rate, Wood’s husband takes local orders to work and then her son Jaxon

delivers them around Bremen. Wood drops off orders in LaGrange County and the Kendallville area, going as far as Angola and Avilla. Jeans are $34 to $54, and sweaters are $30 to $40. Unique bib overalls run $72. Slip dresses with lace at the bottom, and flowing smock dresses, are big sellers and range from $25 to $46. Other popular items include graphic T-shirts, skorts and western wear. “Although we travel, I like to support local,” Wood says. “I get tees from Bremen company Studio 574, owned by Amber Reed. Local Lovin Life Creations makes wine tumblers that I use for giveaways. In addition, I sponsored a hole for a golf tournament that benefited our local high school football team.” “We are continuing to develop our online store and hope to carry children’s clothing for ‘tiny squirrels’ in the future,” Wood continues. “The business is named Chasing Squirrels because I’m always looking for something to focus my attention on. I love getting out and going every weekend in the summer. People like to be able to touch the merchandise and try it on in the dressing room inside the trailer. We have met the most incredible people everywhere we go.” For more info, call 260-367-1902 or visit ChasingSquirrelsOnlineBoutique.com.

goes into the ground, without causing too much water or storm-water runoff. Ecoraster will keep that natural drainage flow away, and add years to the quality look that you want to maintain. It works just great.” He adds that Ecoraster can take a lot of wear and tear over the years, with its high-quality materials. He says the Eco Foundation staff does a top-notch job. “We can fill up the driveways with stones
to make them look great,” Eash says. “You don’t have to deal with water puddles that will make your driveway or sidewalk look bad. Ecoraster is high quality, and a lot of people have been very satisfied with it. They tell their family, friends and neighbors about it.”
Eash notes that there are a lot of ways to make the most of Ecoraster material. “It’s so durable and reliable,” he says. “It’s really lightweight, reusable and very easy to install. We recommend it to everyone. It can be used to make your driveway easier to maintain. It also helps with the mud and dust in barns and horse stalls.
It really makes them look a whole lot better.” Eash says Ecoslab is similar to Ecoraster, and is used on sidewalks and pavilions. “It’s a system for slab-edge insulation,” he says. “It really helps to lower the amount of heat loss on a sidewalk or pavilion. It

“You won’t be stepping into mud,” Eash says. “It’s also energy efficient and lowers the amount of damage on a structure. If you have a party going on, you can lay it down and pick it back up again later. People like that it is so easy to use. A lot of people have parties in their pavilions, and lawns around them. If people are paying a lot of money for painted concrete, this is a better way to go. It has a very unique look to it.” Eash says he is extremely happy to live in Ligonier. “I just love this area so much,” he says. “I don’t feel any peer pressure from neighbors because there aren’t any near me, but people are still close enough to help each other out. Allyse Yoder, who co-owns and operates three businesses with her husband Russ, says she always has something delicious to eat for her hungry customers at the Yoder Crossroads complex. Yoder puts in some long hours, but is continually satisfied that her businesses are going strong. “The businesses in our building that are owned and operated by us are Yoder Popcorn, Corn Crib Cafe and Five Lakes Coffee,” Yoder says. “I mainly manage Yoder Popcorn, but oversee the management and ensure the smooth day-to-day operation of the coffee shop and restaurant.” Yoder notes that all of their businesses are places fun to work. “Yoder Popcorn was started up by my husband’s great-great-uncle Rufus Yoder back in 1936,” she says. “He is the fourth generation of the Yoder family to carry on the family business.” The Corn Crib Cafe also keeps her busy. “Our goal is to provide fresh and locally sourced ingredients for our entrees,” Yoder says. “We serve breakfast and lunch. On our Corn Crib Cafe lunch menu, we offer homemade daily specials, unique burgers, sandwiches, salads, quesadillas, grinders and pizzas. Some of my favorites, and the most popular menu items, are the Southwest Quesadilla, Southwest Chicken Salad, Chicken Club Sandwich and the Tuesday Meatloaf special.”

Yoder says she also enjoys Five Lakes Coffee. “We franchised this coffee shop,” Yoder says. “Five Lakes Coffee is a small-batch roastery based out of Sturgis, Michigan. We offer hot, iced or frozen coffee beverages. We also offer cold-brew coffee, teas, smoothies, some baked goods, and we have become quickly known for our bagel breakfast sandwiches. We have a variety of coffee beans to select from.”

Yoder says each of the businesses has a unique history. “Rufus Yoder started this business by growing popcorn in his garden and sharing the excess crops with neighbors, and quickly a business was born,” Yoder says. “The business was sold out of the family briefly for three years from 1996 to 1999, and then purchased by Rufus’s great-niece Sharon, her husband Richard, and their son Russ Yoder, in 1999. In 2018, Russ and I became full owners. The family also farms with 2,000 acres. Out of all the acres, 400 to 600 acres of that property is for popcorn every year. We have also recently moved and expanded our retail space here at Yoder Crossroads.”

to start, continue, or grow their career in the medical device industry,” Walter explains. “With a strong emphasis on skilled trades and [computerized numerical control] manufacturing, we are looking for individuals that are excited to have the opportunity to train in-house and grow long-term with our company.” In addition to manufacturing, the company has positions available in several areas including management, supply chain and human resources. Premiums are also offered for second and third shift positions. Access openings at ParagonMedical.com. Applicants should set up an account and check regularly. Job openings are updated daily. “Our business is all about providing products, which aids in improved quality of life of others,” Walter says. “Passion, reliability, integrity, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team are all key attributes of success as an employee. hoosing the finishes for a new home, or the products to renovate a wellloved one, can be difficult. Paint colors, furnishings and decorative elements are the finishing touches. But everything needs a good foundation, and that comes from flooring choices.
At Pratt’s Floor Covering showroom in Plymouth, customers can get a sense of the types of flooring available, look at samples, and get skilled advice from the owners Matt and Carla Pratt, who have almost three decades of industry knowhow to share with their customers.
“When it comes to flooring, there are so many options to choose from that sometimes it can become overwhelming for our customers,” Carla Pratt says. Those choices include hardwood, vinyl, ceramic and carpet. Under each of these categories are even more choices. Should a homeowner choose engineered hardwoods or solid hardwoods? Would

Which type of carpeting will hold up to the rigors of everyday life? “When working with our customers we listen to their needs and their ideas,” Pratt says. “We then find what style fits the decor in their home and a flooring that will stand up best for their lifestyle. We want every customer to leave feeling confident and secure about their floor covering decision.” Matt and Carla started their flooring business in 1992 from their home. Matt had previous installation experience, and the business started off small. “After several years, the business grew and so did the need for more space,” Pratt explains. “We then moved our business to Jefferson Street here in Plymouth. Styles change, and so do customer’s needs. New products are developed, and floor coverings, finishes and products go in and out of style. “At Pratt’s Floor Covering LLC, we work hard to stay on top of all the new styles and updates in floor covering,” Pratt says. “We enjoy bringing in new styles and showing the latest ideas in floor covering to our customers.
