It’s common to find a town of 5,500 people with a few businesses like restaurants, antique galleries, vendor malls and curio shops. However, Monticello can boast a business that few towns its size can. They have a jewelry store, Roth Brothers Jewelers, which has been around since the early 1900s, and has been family owned and operated since 1946. The Roth family legacy began when Vincent “Sparky” Roth, a watch and clock maker by trade, purchased it. After World War II, his brother and veteran, Francis, joined the business, making it Roth Brothers Jewelers. “The majority of the business back then was different - it was pocket watches, wristwatches, flatware, specialty gifts and small kitchen appliances,” says Rusty Roth, who represents the third generation of the family involved with the store.
1972, he worked to expand the jewelry side of the business, both in sales and repairs. By the time Willie’s sons Rusty and Greg joined in 2000 and 2002 respectively, the business had grown to incorporate a wider inventory and higher-tech repair services. “We still do clocks, watches, jewelry, and sales and services on all of those, but it’s evolved into a lot more jewelry with the trends and fashions and all that,” Roth says.

themselves on customer satisfaction. They also try to help customers have a relaxing and fun experience. “A lot of customers that we work with say that they felt comfortable,” Roth says. “We made somewhat of a nervous situation calm and comfortable - not as overwhelming as they thought it would be when they walked through the door.” They sell a wide variety of jewelry beyond typical wedding and fashion rings. They also sell high-quality necklaces, bracelets,
earrings, bridal gifts, money clips and more. They also sell loose-cut and polished diamonds, unattached to any kind of jewelry. This is a way to ensure that the rings that leave the building are of the best quality possible. “Most of our engagement rings in the counter won’t
have center stones in them,” Roth says. “We’ll leave them blank, and then when a customer comes in and likes that particular engagement ring, we can set any shape diamond or gemstone for that matter.” Nor is the inventory limited to diamonds and engagement rings. Other types
of gems can be set into rings or in any other type of jewelry, like mother’s and grandmother’s rings among others. Their services are varied, ranging from appraisals and repairs to custom-made jewelry. the team will take it from there. They’ll make some computer-aided design renderings and send to the customer to approve. “They’ll give us their likes and dislikes, then if there are any changes we’ll make those changes,” Roth says. “Then we’ll have them review them again. Sometimes we’ll go straight from that process to making that ring if they’re ready.” If not, the process is continued until the customer is satisfied with what they see. From that point, a 3D wax image of the ring is made for the customer’s final approval. “We’ll cast that into whatever metal they’re wanting,” Roth says. “After that - the finished product.” Remaking jewelry is another popular service. “People bring in what they’ve inherited - heirloom stuff,” Roth says. “Grandma’s ring or grandpa’s ring. We melt those down and remake them into something that whoever receives them

will actually wear. If someone receives a ring from their grandma or great-grandma that was popular in the ’50s, ’60s or ’70s, it’s usually a cocktail-like ring that doesn’t fit today’s fashion or attire.” Roth Brothers Jewelers can fashion it into something that does, and meets with high approval. Helping customers through the process is one of Roth’s favorite parts. “I’m not tied down to one thing,” he says. “I get to wait on people but I also get to work on the jewelry. I get to work with the same people that I’m making it for, so it’s a full circle. It’s not just me selling it and somebody else making it. before the couple moved to Bass Lake. After that move in the summer of 2020, paired with low water levels that hindered most aquatic crafts besides sailboats, Olshansky got the idea of starting a sailing club. After starting a Facebook group to gauge interest in sailing and racing around Bass Lake, the group grew and grew. Throughout the pandemic the group has persisted because of its dedicated staff and the community they have helped create. DeYoung and the club he represents stress that their number-one mission is to be as inclusive as possible at Bass Lake. To include and involve all those interested in sailing has always been the goal of the club, and this is why, after nearly three years, it has become a tight-knit community - a community that is welcoming to newcomers and rooted in enjoying casual competition. Although casual competition may seem like an oxymoron, a day out on the

water may prove otherwise. This was exemplified last summer. During the last weekend of July in 2021, the club hosted a formal sailboat race during which nine events were held. That competition was held amidst the casual backdrop of “one of the best inland lakes in the Midwest,” as Olshansky puts it. During that weekend sailors and spectators were able to enjoy the water and each other’s company while partaking in casual competition. Sailing is a nuanced sport that combines science and art. Courses are made in an oval shape. Sailors race around the course and have to read the wind and current while trying to beat fellow competitors. As winds shift, sailors must shift their crafts and adjust sails based on a unique combination of data consideration and personal intuition. That unique combination is part of what makes sailing a nuanced sport that requires different forms of knowledge. Sailing in big cities tends to lead to formal clubs that can lose their casual nature in favor of competition. Bass Lake’s members still love competition but put nothing above the goal of being a safe, casual and inclusive yacht club. It’s a place to improve and explore. No boat is required. No specific address or residence is needed. No experience is necessary. All that members and those interested need is a desire to be on the water, and an ability to get there in order to be a part of the club. After their big summer last year, the club has continued to grow and intends to hold another competition this summer. Since reaching out to the community in

FULTON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY OFFERS MULTIPLE EXHIBITS AND EVENTS

The variety of attractions at the Fulton County Historical Society (FCHS) has expanded through the years, giving guests an entertaining and vivid look at the past. Melinda Clinger, FCHS museum director, says she has enjoyed working at the museum
for more than 40 years. “I have worked with the museum since 1981 when I was 14 years old,” Clinger says. “I worked during the summers, went to business school at International Business College, and came back full time in 1986. I was given the title of museum director in 1998, when Shirley Willard was the executive director, and then she retired in 2001.”

Clinger notes that the museum brings in a lot of guests. “The museum is open six days a week,” she says. “It’s open year round, and we rent our two meeting rooms out for events. They are very busy as well. We currently are holding two antique shows a year. We have Redbud Trail Rendezvous in April, the Power Show in June, Trail of Courage in September, and
Haunted Woods in October. Other groups use our buildings as well. We have the gun show three times a year. We have the Indiana Gourd Society show in May, the Fulton County Animal and Adoption Center craft show in April, and a yard sale later in the summer.” Clinger adds that many guests enjoy the exhibits. “Most of our exhibits are out on display with some in storage,” she says. “The museum building has 17 different areas of display, and then we have Round Barn and Living History Village items in each building. Most of the outside buildings are open during festivals or by appointment only, as we do not have enough people here every day to take people outside to the buildings.” The nonprofit owns 35 acres, including one mile in length and 300’ in depth. “At the southern end we have the Tippecanoe

River, where we hold part of the festivals,” Clinger says. “The others are in the northern part by the Living History Village.” Clinger says the Living History Village is called Loyal, Indiana, for a little village that used to be there a few miles west of the museum. The village used to be called Germany, Indiana, according to FCHS literature. It was renamed Loyal, Indiana, in 1918, when the U.S. was at war with Germany.

The recreated Loyal, Indiana, depicts the era of 1900 to 1925. This period of history is known as the Golden Age of Agriculture. Farmers at the time made a profit and could afford labor-saving equipment like hay elevators, riding cultivators and round barns, according to the society’s literature. Round barns were experimental structures that were considered economical. Clinger says another popular event, the Trail of Courage Living History Festival in September, recreates the adventure of Frontier, Indiana, where guests can literally recreate the footsteps of history. The Trail of Courage Living History Festival has been taking place since 1976. Frontier, Indiana, features foods prepared over wood fires, period music and dance, historic camps and trading, traditional crafts, canoe rides on the river, and other fun things to see and do. Clinger notes that the Trail of Courage combines the genealogy of the Potawatomi people and the settlers who lived in Fulton County and northern Indiana in the early 1800s.

Many volunteers participate in the event, and the food includes Buffalo burgers, apple dumplings, pulled pork, chicken and noodles, chili, apple sausage and ice cream, among many other items. The festival is based on local history, before the Potawatomi people were marched west during a forced removal known as the Trail of Death, according to FCHS literature. Since 1976 the festival has honored Native Americans and shown life before the removal. The Fulton County Historical Society is located at 37 East 375 North in Rochester. There’s a lot of “new news” surrounding this year’s Lakefest, and event organizers are happy to report that all of it is good. First, the nearly 40-year-old event will return to its longtime calendar slot of the third weekend in July (this year that’s the 15th through the 17th), after a brief move last year to the Fourth of July weekend. Second, the theme of the event this year is
“Art is in the Air,” which celebrates the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the unique Culver-Lake Maxinkuckee community by way of pop-up artists (festival organizers are seeking additional artists to add to the roster, for anyone interested), murals and more. Third, event organizers are working to enhance and invigorate community involvement and collaboration - a return to earlier models as well as a vibrant new approach, according to Lakefest President Andrea Canacci. That involvement includes local nonprofits, community school organizations and teams, and more. For example, the Culver Community Schools Bass Fishing Club is spearheading the return of the bass fishing tournament as part of the festival. The Culver Community High School (CCHS) football team is assisting in trash and waste management in exchange for a donation to its program. The CCHS basketball team is managing the basketball tournament, another fundraiser, and similarly, the school’s volleyball team THE LAKES MAGAZINE / JUNE 2022 / TownePost.com / 21
Canacci notes that such endeavors are part of a newly developed event mission statement and goals generated by the festival committee. The statement reads: “The Culver Lakefest team is an all-volunteer, nonprofit group committed to giving back to the Culver community by raising funds to plan and host a weekend of family-friendly activities and entertainment, and by offering opportunities for community groups, civic organizations and businesses to raise funds to help them achieve their goals.”

Canacci also explains that more than half of the Lakefest funds help provide and expand family-friendly events and entertainment. “In addition to grants from organizations like the Marshall County Community Foundation and Visit Marshall County, the bulk of our fundraising comes from dedicated Culver residents, visitors and businesses,” she says. Donations from individuals and organizations, she points out, will not only help support Culver Community Schools groups like those mentioned above, but also assist in providing proper security and safety requirements, bathrooms and other services. “Not glamorous, but essential,” Canacci says. ave Wagner will never forget the day that his son Justin approached him with the idea of opening a paintball park in Knox in the early 2000s. “I said, ‘Are you crazy? No one is going to come to Winamac, Indiana,’” Dave says. However, it didn’t take long for Justin to convince him to give it a shot.
Thanks to Dave’s experience in construction, they had the skills needed to create an incredible experience for others to enjoy. “We ended up with a lot of unique fields you won’t see anywhere else in paintball,” Dave says. Through the years they have continued to use common items to create their obstacles, like grain silos, shipping containers, railroad ties, highway signs and so much more.
Paintball is a high-intensity game that people of all ages and walks of life can enjoy to create good memories that will last a lifetime. “A lot of people view paintball as a bunch of tough guys going out and shooting each other with paintballs and it hurts,” Justin says. They decided that if they were going to do it, they would do it right. “There’s some negativity about it. It’s kind of like an amusement park where you go to all the different rides.” Even from the start, the business model was complex - a multimap park, each one themed differently to enhance the players’ experiences. They started with one field in 2004, and throughout the next 17 years they built on, a little bit at a time. The first six years represented an incredible learning curve for the
father-son team. “Until the year 2010 we didn’t even know if the business was going to make it, but we stuck with it,” Dave says. “It was hard at times.” Today, Fort Knox is 14-field park and they have safety equipment available for anyone who wishes to rent instead of buying their own. Players have the option of playing in an Old West town, in Area 51, on a model of a pirate ship from the Bermuda Triangle, in Alcatraz, on an exact replica of a popular “Call of Duty” setting,

There are several other maps, all of which present a realistic, adrenalinepumping game. “We tried to take it to the next level where, instead of just playing out in the woods, we tried to make a setting for each map where people feel that they are in ‘The Walking Dead’ or in an Old West town,” Justin says. Next year the Fort Knox team will celebrate their 20th anniversary. They are arguably one of the best paintball parks in the states, if

the comments and number of visitors are anything to go on. “We have several customers who travel all over the United States to play paintball, and they overwhelmingly tell us that we’re the best field, infrastructure-wise, that they have ever been on,” Dave says. Justin points to Dave as his mentor, support and partner. “I am very grateful to have a good father,” he says. “He taught me so much, from building and creating to being a good, honest and positive person. He’s taught me that you can overcome anything. You can

Hard work always pays off.” Fort Knox Paintball has been a rewarding business to own. “It makes me smile when I hear them come off the field after they’re done playing, talking about how much fun that was,” Justin says. “It just builds a better relationship in a weird way. It makes them smile.”

“We watched these restrictions closely because they could change daily,” she recalls. “That way we could advise people on what to expect.” Huff works out of her home in Knox. She got started in the travel business as a busy mom with a big family, with the task of planning the family vacations. “I was planning our own trips and loved it,” Huff says.
She started planning trips for friends and it became a side hustle for her. Now, it’s a career. Disney is one of her areas of expertise, developed through her own family’s vacations. Huff also specializes in allinclusive trips to the Caribbean, large-group travel and destination weddings. “If anyone is interested in a trip, reach out to me,” Huff says. When planning a trip, Huff offers some tips to make the process easier. First, consider the budget. That can determine the location, and the level of accommodations and activities available.

Second, travelers should decide on what they want their vacation to be. Are they looking for a romantic getaway? Are they looking for a family-friendly resort with lots of things to do? Some people just want to relax, Huff says. Huff describes her role as a travel agent as a “personal concierge.” Often, the travel agent has traveled to the resort or destination and has firsthand knowledge that is helpful in helping to plan a vacation for clients. Travel agents also work for the client, and can step in when flights are canceled or when problems occur during the trip. Huff will call the airline and deal with making new arrangements, for example, so her clients don’t have to spend their vacation time attending to this time-consuming task. “Travel agent services are free,” Huff says, adding that this is misunderstood by many people. Clients pay for the travel package and her services are compensated by the hotels, resorts and other suppliers in the travel industry. Disney continues to be a popular destination for travelers and the Dominican Republic is also seeing a lot of interest, Huff says.
Huff grew up in Knox. She and her husband Rob have five children ranging in age from 8 to 17. It is possible for a large family like hers to afford travel, Huff says. Travel is a way to make time in busy lives to do something memorable.

area. It was a good time. It’s wonderful for me to be able to ask my 16-year-old to go turn on the grill and help me make dinner. Moving on, for those of you who like the smokiness of choice meats - we have a nice selection of wood chips, wood bisquettes and smoke. Wish you had a smoker? We even sell smoke bombs that will turn any charcoal or gas grill into a smoker. It was 6 a.m. on a Friday, I was speaking with my brother on the phone and he mentioned he was cooking a steak for breakfast because he had a taste for steak and eggs. I asked him if he was outside at the grill. He said he was not, and he was using his cast-iron skillet to cook his meal. If you are not a fan of outdoor grilling but like steak, we can help with that too. We have a grand selection of Lodge cookware. When Keitha Kunkle, owner of Lilly Pad Boutique, initially purchased the building her business is housed in, she wasn’t completely sure what she wanted to do.

She had a wide variety of fun options to choose from. Kunkle decided to think about which one appealed to her the most, and come up with an idea that would best suit her personality. “I bought the building and decided to either open a boutique or to open an ice cream shop, or maybe a restaurant,” Kunkle says. The boutique was her favorite choice. It also sounded like a lot of fun. Kunkle is happy with the decision she made, and says customers enjoy the high-quality items she has for sale. “I have apparel for men, women and children,” Kunkle says. “I also have some specialty items. I have a lot of Lake Manitou shirts, cups, and some cheese cutting boards, blankets and sweatshirts.”

Kunkle also enjoys the items for sale, and doesn’t have a particular favorite. “I love all of my apparel,” she says. “I love clothes and have always loved to shop. I listen to my customers and find out what they love.”

other services. Service is not limited to cars and pickup trucks. The shop can work on semis, motorcycles and boats too. Winter, unpaved roads and driving in general can take a toll on vehicles. Ice melt can corrode a vehicle from underneath. Grime left too long can ruin the finish on the exterior. Tough trucks can get scratched when hauling items or doing other tasks. One of the services provided is bed liners for pickup trucks. Ziebart uses Rhino Linings, a spray-on bed liner that results in nonskid coating that bonds directly to the truck bed. This treatment is airtight, abrasion and impact resistant, and protects against rust and corrosion. To keep a vehicle in excellent condition, it should be washed once every two weeks. Owens says this is especially important in winter so salt and road grime can be cleaned off before it can cause damage to the finish. There is a service available that provides a ceramic-like finish on vehicles, eliminating the need for frequent washing. This process carries a seven-year guarantee. It is one of more than 1,200 service centers in 36 countries, according to the corporate website.
“I worked for Dobson Ford for 11 years as a detailer,” Owens says. He was named the manager of Ziebart Winamac in September of 2018 when the franchise was bought by Dobson and opened for business. Owens supervises and works alongside a crew of five. That is where he learned to detail vehicles. Detailing simply means doing a deep cleaning on the interior and exterior of the vehicle. The deep cleaning that happens to the exterior of the vehicle is a multistep process. Owens explains that the vehicle is shampooed, and then a claying process is applied. This mix of soap and clay forms a layer on the exterior. When it is rinsed off, it takes off road tar and contaminants from the finish. After it is done, the finish is smooth to the touch. There are advantages to coming to Winamac for the Ziebart services. There are other locations throughout the state, but the small-town service in Winamac is what brings people to the door, Owens says. His customers come from Pulaski, Fulton, Starke, White and Cass counties. “People like coming here,” he says. “There is that small-town vibe.” An important component of that small-town vibe involves how Owens and his crew focus on customer service. “I believe in doing the job right, to the best of my abilities,” he explains. “We care about the customer’s vehicle. We treat it like our own.”

f Mark Richards, the owner of Pro Wake Surf Shop, builds it, he is faithful that people will come. The “it” he refers to is his plan to make Syracuse, Indiana, a destination for folks embracing the lake lifestyle, and those looking for something to do, no matter the season. Richards moved into the former Lakeside Fitness off of State Road 13 on Harkless Drive and set up a boat dealership there. The dealership disbanded at the Syracuse location due to inventory complications caused by the pandemic. “We were not sure what we wanted to do with this building,” he says. In 2021, however, he renovated and reconfigured the layout of the 13,000-squarefoot building to include a multilevel, highquality surf shop, and production spaces for his businesses. The Syracuse-Wawasee Chamber of Commerce members got a preview of the space in March when Pro Wake

Pro Wake Surf Shop is the first step in the plan. The idea came from his wife Patty, Richards says. “She kept pecking at me,” he recalls. The idea was to do something similar to Ron Jon Surf Shop and other nationally known surf shops that market their locations as destinations. Richards says his business ideas and projects usually come about from one of two sources - God or his wife. “When she suggests something, I have to go bigger,” he says. The shop carries a line of lakeshoreliving-inspired clothing, swimwear, totes, sunglasses, sandals and other apparel that can transition from being on the water to coming ashore for dinner. The Richards did 10 months of extensive research by visiting

Lake Wawasee draws people to Syracuse during the late spring and summer, Richards says. He is designing his indoor space for people to enjoy even in the winter. He describes his concept as “one stop for a day’s activities,” designed to turn Syracuse into a year-round destination.

Grilling with a cold beer in hand has been a long-preferred pastime for many men (dads especially), for many, many years. There’s something about being able to say “Look at that steak” that gets them going. So why not “grill him” to find out if he needs a new grill or new grill tools? Grill him and find out what he needs or wants for his outdoor kitchen space. While you are at it, ask him about his favorite food to grill. Surprise him with his favorite steaks, sides and some new tools - and if you feel good about grilling, surprise him with a fully grilled meal in his honor.

FUR-EVER HOMES PULASKI ANIMAL CENTER FACILITATES MUCH-NEEDED DOG AND CAT ADOPTIONS Writer / Robert Noah Torres Photography Provided
Pulaski Animal Center is a growing animal shelter within a large county. Like a lone island in a vast sea, it is the only animal center in Pulaski county. It is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that serves as a rescue for surrendered and homeless dogs and cats in the area. The center is almost entirely run by volunteers, and supported almost entirely by donations. It works to facilitate the placement of its animals in desirable homes. Pulaski Animal Center serves as an example of how to properly start an animal shelter and how to ethically run it in order to provide sound care for animals. On top of this, the team there aims to educate the public about humane animal treatment and how to prevent overpopulation. The center was founded in the beginning of 2013 through discussion among like-minded people in Pulaski county. At the time there was no animal shelter in the county, and through organization and the determination of those involved, by the end of that year Pulaski Animal Center had been established, along with a board of directors. In early 2014 the center gained 501(c)(3) status and was operating out of a local pet grooming facility that began kenneling dogs for them. By late 2014 the staff members had converted a car garage they had rented into a working shelter. The shelter started with seven cat kennels and seven dog kennels. “We have expanded a bit since then as far as what we can do on

cats, but we are still a very small shelter,” says Manager Ryan Robinson. “We are only funded basically through donations and fundraising, and we don’t get any funding from the county at all.” The shelter is now able to take up to 13 cats, and has large runs outside for dogs that were converted from cornfields donated by the owner of the old car garage. The organization began fundraising in 2014 and 2015. Pulaski Animal Center holds an annual fundraiser in April. They are also involved in an upcoming fundraising event on June 4. They will have a space within an upcoming car show. The proceeds from concession sales at the show will be donated to the shelter. Communal donation and cooperation like this is how the center has been able to operate for nearly 10 years, and why it persists as the only shelter in the county. One does not have to live in the county to donate. Robinson helps maintain the organization’s Facebook page, where needed materials are posted along with up-to-date information on the animals and shelter. The center is always in need of certain products such as cat litter, bleach, kitten food, paper towels, Dawn soap and canned dog food. Donations are accepted at the center during business hours. Robinson has been manager for close to two years, and his primary role is to lead the effort to re-home strays and find

proper homes for unwanted animals. Most of the animals in Pulaski are surrenders, which means their owners gave them up. An example of this is a beagle mix who is currently in the care of the shelter. She is over 12 years old, and was originally taken in at the center in 2019 and treated for frostbite on her nose and ears.
She had been adopted but was surrendered back to the shelter because of health reasons related to the owner. Since then, like the rest of the animals in the center, she is in need of a decent home where she can live out her life. If an owner cannot be found, Pulaski will be that place, as it is a no-kill shelter.

OCRA that allowed Develop Culver to work with a consultant on a project they called Make Culver Home, to help the organization gain a better understanding of how to convert more part-time residents to full-time residents. “Over a six-month period, Develop Culver and enFocus Inc. analyzed local property data from Marshall County’s geographic information systems, conducted an online survey of 213 residents, held three focus groups and held 19 one-on-one interviews,” Fox says. “Based on the results of the activities, some priorities were identified as opportunities to raise the attractiveness of Culver, and to ideally ‘Make Culver Home’ to current part-time residents or prospective new full-time residents.” The priorities were to implement more year-round activities and amenities with an emphasis on the wintertime, prioritize reliable broadband across the Culver community as well as build a remote

“Develop Culver started a Facebook page called Culver Small Business Owners and Managers that anyone can ask to join,” Fox says. “Email is also good. I administer a town-wide Google Groups email list called TownGownandLake, where the over 1,300 subscribers share information about what is going on in and around Culver. Town leaders often post upcoming meetings and other important town-wide events and actions.” Fox adds that people can also participate in or view the Culver Town Council meetings.
“The best way to get involved is to volunteer to serve on one or more of the four subcommittees to be part of the planning for Culver’s future, through strategic planning and through working collaboratively towards a shared vision,” Fox says.
“All Culver Town Council meetings are videotaped and posted on the town’s YouTube channel, and other townrelated meetings include the Culver Redevelopment Commission and Planning Committee,” Fox says. “The Board of Zoning Appeals are open to the public. The town website provides details at townofculver.org.”

Members of Develop Culver are excited to have been selected to host a Main Street Community Exchange this summer in Culver as part of OCRA’s Indiana Main Street program. “Community Exchanges give communities an opportunity to discuss local issues, learn from each other on how to resolve issues, and discover innovative tactics Main Street communities are employing to address the needs of their communities,” Fox says. “The exchanges are open to community leaders and other main streets across the state.”

Larry and Gloria Martin, the 35-year owners of Middlebury Ace Hardware, have created spaces on land adjacent to their business that are testaments to their faith and love for community. The Carpenter’s House and the Master’s Gallery have become places for people to reflect, pray, meet and be inspired by the lessons found in God’s word.

“We are strong in our faith and Christian walk,” Gloria Martin says. “When we hear God speak, we try to be as true as we can.” What the couple heard was inspiration to build a house of prayer that people could come to. The log cabin on the hill next to the hardware store is the result of that inspiration. Built in 2017, it is simple and inviting, and built from an Amish kit, Martin says. While the cabin design is simple, there are some elements to the structure that are grand, such as the stained glass windows, hand

crafted by an artist in Texas, an altar, and a cedar cross. The windows, the front door and other features were funded by the community. Another feature is the prayer wall, which is often filled with handwritten notes asking for prayers from Carpenter’s House visitors. Martin says people are encouraged to write their prayer on a piece of paper and hang it on the wall. Someone else will come along, read what they are asking for and perhaps include the request in their own prayers. The wraparound porch, swings and rocking chairs are also available to those who want to de-stress or simply enjoy the cabin’s welcoming atmosphere. Martin says she is happy to see people using the porch and praying in the cabin. “This affirms what God has asked us to do,” Martin says. The cabin is open to anyone during the hardware store’s weekday business hours. The key to the Carpenter’s House is available by request. Most of the time it is open, Martin says, and visitors can just go right in. Visitors to the log cabin vary. In addition to local folks, truckers traveling down U.S. Highway 20 have stopped in. Sometimes the cabin is used for Bible studies. Every two months, a “Pizza and Prayer” event is held on the grounds. It can be used for ceremonies, special events and other gatherings that fall into the purpose of the Carpenter’s House. A children’s Bible camp also takes place for four weeks in the summer. It was also the site of the Martin’s vow renewal ceremony.

The Master’s Gallery will present the original artwork of Mindi Oaten, a Canadian acrylic artist whose art is inspired by her faith. In the Master’s Gallery, Oaten’s work depicts the 66 books of the Bible, beginning with Genesis. “Garden of Grace,” as the artwork is titled, depicts a flower or plant as noted in the Bible. The Master’s Gallery is also a log cabin, but a different size from the Carpenter’s House. It has motion sensors and lights to properly display the faith-themed artwork adorning the walls. “It is literally a walk through the Bible,” Martin says. Larry and Gloria met as college sweethearts. They have been married for 53 years. “We know each other’s heart,” Martin says. The Martins raised four children and have 11 grandchildren. They live close

enough to visit and have taken an interest in the Carpenter’s House and the Master’s Gallery. A time capsule created by the Indiana family is tucked away on the grounds. The capsule is a way for the Martins to “pass on our faith and share the promises of God,” she says. “God uses people to carry out his extreme plans,” Martin says. “As Psalm 66:5 says, ‘Come see what our God has done. What awesome miracles he has brought about.’” The Martins are currently organizing an outdoor concert for October featuring Jason Gray, a Christian musician from Nashville. The concert is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. Food trucks will be on-site for this event, Martin says.
