says. “We purchased it in August 2019 and we changed the name to Odell Lumber & Supply. We felt like a fresh start and a new direction was needed.” Odell is a lifelong grain and livestock farmer from Howard County.
“I graduated from Purdue University in 1985 with an associate degree in agricultural economics,” Odell says. “In 2021 we changed our residency to Rochester, and moved up here full time in the spring of 2022.” Odell loves Rochester and would like to do more to help his neighbors.
“In response to several people in the community, I will be running for mayor of Rochester in 2023,” he says. “I see that as an additional opportunity to help people, which has been one of the greatest joys of owning a retail business.” The retail industry is something fresh to Odell.

Odell has plans to expand his business. “We have in our immediate plans to add a 1,000-square-foot showroom - home center, if you will - to better display our full product lines,” he says. “We stock a complete line of treated lumber, posts and decking. We are also just one of a few lumber businesses in the state to offer MoistureShield composite decking, which has as good of a warranty as any other place on the market, but at a very affordable price. We can then wrap that deck with several railing options that will set it apart. Before doing any type of deck work, check us out. You will be surprised at what we have to offer.” Odell Lumber & Supply also carries Marvin windows and doors, and SCREENEZE for screened-in porches that can span 150 square feet without any internal support, for clearer vision. “We also offer services that include a fully equipped shop for custom cutting, cabinet building, and screen, glass, door or window repair,” Odell says. “We can also custom-build aluminum of various color options, sharpen saw bits and blades, and refurbish some brands of pneumatic nailers.” The business also has a lot of hardware to choose from. “We have a well-stocked hardware selection, and a highly knowledgeable staff that can help you design and quote your project,” Odell says. “We deliver larger projects for free, and smaller ones for a nominal fee.
MARSHALLL COUNTY
We cover a 50-mile radius, sometimes even further.” Odell is always pleased to meet new customers. “If you are looking for quality and a personal touch with your project, no matter the size, from a few minor upgrades to a complete home, we would love to help you in any way that we can,” he says. “Our hope is that once you visit us, you will want to visit us again.” Odell Lumber & Supply is located at 1720 East State Road 14 in Rochester. For 100 years the North Judson-Wayne Township Public Library has met the needs of the community in a multitude of ways. Since the beginning of its existence,
it’s been an amenity that residents have appreciated. As the years have gone by, it has kept up with the times while offering services for every age group. “We are very happy to celebrate this

anniversary,” says Kelsie Purcell, library director. “It’s a vibrant library and it’s always been important to the town.” Library Board President Venita Cunningham agrees.

“It was very important 100 years ago according to newspaper clippings,” Cunningham says. “The townspeople really wanted it. In 1916 a committee was formed. A dentist, Dr. Corbitt, was a strong leader behind it. A Carnegie grant was received in 1917 so it is a Carnegie library, but because of World War I construction was put on hold.” Carnegie libraries sprung up in small towns across the United States during the late 1800s and early 1900s. They were funded by grants given by Andrew Carnegie, one of the richest men of the age. An immigrant from Scotland, he made his fortune in the steel industry. He was influenced by a man he knew in Pennsylvania who allowed working boys free use of his personal library. Carnegie felt that the books he read contributed to his success and that he, in turn, had a moral obligation to better society. “By 1919 the war was over and the town was ready to build the library, but prices had shot up,” Cunningham says. “For two years the committee asked for bids, but no one would bid the price they needed. In 1920 a women’s group got books and set up a library in an upstairs room of a downtown building.” Meanwhile the town board was developing a wish list. A municipal water building plus a site for the fire department was needed, and there was a desire for a town park. Also at the time, all area students were being served by a one-room township school. There was no high school. At that point a wonderful turn of events happened. “All the agencies worked together and

combined their resources,” Cunningham says. “The original $10,000 Carnegie grant was combined with funds from five
other sources. When it was finished, the block contained the water department, fire department, library, high school and park.
Today the school is gone, but a monument marks the spot it occupied on the side of the library. A police station is there, but

there is no longer the fire department or water works.” By the time the building opened, there was no money left to buy books. The temporary downtown library was closed and the 600 books from that site were moved to the new library. To remedy the situation, attendees at the dedication held in the spring of 1922 were asked to bring a book to donate. Today the library has an inventory of 24,575 volumes. “It has stayed open ever since,” Purcell says. “During World War II it was a location where Girl Scouts were trained in first aid and it could have served as a medical facility if needed. The first kindergarten in town was held in the basement, and over the years it’s been the site for many clubs and organizations such as preschools, 4-H and Kiwanis.”
Currently the library hosts reading programs for all ages. In recent times, summer programs for grown-ups have been based on games such as “Monopoly” and “Clue.” The baby program for infants up to 18 months features singing, lap games and book reading. The tot program is for children up to age 3, and story hour is for ages 3 to kindergarten. Other programs encompass school grade levels. The library offers unique resources to the community. The Library of Things allows individuals and families to check out items they would not ordinary own such as ice-cream makers, movie projectors to be used outside, games, record players, and even seasonal, shaped baking pans. In a partnership with the Starke County Community Foundation, patrons can check out educational tablets. Since they are not dependent on internet
connection, this learning tool is safe for children to use. They are preloaded with brain games to stimulate reading, STEM and even social skills. “The library has always provided whatever is needed at the time,” Purcell says. “Even if people don’t have a library card, they can use our fax, copiers and computers. We have a maker-space room where people can come in and use the heat-press machine to make designs on T-shirts, mugs and metal water bottles. We have LEGOs, a robot for programming, STEM kits and a sewing machine. We are still reaching out to provide services. The library has always reflected the town. It’s a safe, welcoming space.” North Judson-Wayne Township Public Library is located at 208 Keller Avenue in North Judson. For more info, call 574896-2841 or visit njwtpl.org.

BEARY’S ICE CREAM SHOP PUTS A FOCUS ON PREMIUM PRODUCTS Writer / Lois Tomaszewski Photographer / Tony Straw
At Beary’s Ice Cream Shop in Plymouth, nostalgia and family are two important themes that merge in this newly opened business. Owners Jen and Dave Leffel wanted to capture the memories their family has made over ice cream, and capitalize on the appeal of being part of Plymouth’s historic downtown. The business opened on May 26 in the building that originally housed Bosworth’s department store. The Leffels purchased the building last year. “We are excited and honored to be a part of the historical downtown district, and want to build on the stories that have already started here,” Dave Leffel says. Ice cream seemed like a logical choice, as the Leffels say this frozen treat has been part of their family vacation routine.
Dave and Jen Leffel
“Our family vacations have always included a search for ice cream we could not find at home,” he says. “The kids would be searching the internet for places that weren’t serving a national brand of some kind. Not that those

products aren’t really good - it was about finding something different, even if more of a regional option.” The Leffels found their regional ice cream source after visiting Mercedeze Rain Ice Cream and Chocolates in North Liberty in February. This shop features homemade ice cream and Leffel says they were hooked. After talking with the owner there, a deal was made to feature Mercedeze Rain ice cream at Beary’s. The ice cream shop offers two lines of premium, high-butterfat, hard-packed and scooped ice cream. Mercedeze Rain is one of those premium lines, and the other is sourced out of Florida and has a wider distribution range. Beary’s is the only shop in Indiana offering the Florida-based brand. At least 18 to 25 different flavors are available, including traditional favorites and some adult-flavored varieties made with a touch of alcohol. Unique flavors from the

Mercedeze Rain line include the popular Banana Pudding, Peanut Butter Chocolate Chunk, and Shark Water - a blue moon ice cream with sprinkles and a gummy shark on top. Hard-packed frozen yogurt is an option too. There are a few flavors with no sugar added, as well as Italian ice. The staff also tries to include at least two nondairy options. “Too often, those with dairy dietary issues are left out of the fun,” Leffel says. The menu features waffle cones and bowls made in the shop, shakes, malts, sundaes and floats. Two signature sundaes are a nod to Plymouth’s history, Leffel says. The first is The REES. It is a scoop of Peanut Butter Chocolate Chunk surrounded by two scoops of chocolate ice cream, with swirls of chocolate and peanut butter sauces, peanut butter cups, pecans, a couple homemade waffle-cone slices, and of course whipped

cream and a cherry. The second, called The Nickel Plate, is made with blueberry cheesecake ice cream, blueberry and marshmallow sauces, peanuts, whipped cream, cherries and waffle-cone slices. Food options right now include smash burgers and coney dogs, with loaded baked potatoes, pulled pork, and a weekend brunch on the list for later. Beary is the name of a stuffed bear that first belonged to the couple’s oldest daughter Sara. The bear was then claimed by their younger daughter Becca and has also been a part of their grandchildren’s fun. The Leffels have taken steps to make sure their ice cream shop is welcoming to all members of the family, including friendly pups, and is a fun place to enjoy ice cream treats. There is a kid-sized ice cream truck and a ring-toss game. “We gave Beary’s a full wall of Neapolitan
ice cream stripes under an overhang that lights up in the evening,” Leffel says. “There is also a huge, oversized chair that the bear tends to occupy, and the kids - and some adults as well - love to climb up on it and
take photos with him.” Beary’s is located at 203 North Michigan Street in Plymouth. Call 574-784-1004 for more information.

Structural Integrity HERITAGE BACKYARDS BRINGS UNWAVERING QUALITY TO THE SHED BUSINESS Writer / Lois Tomaszewski Photographer / Jubilee Edgell
People accumulate stuff. That is a fact, and often there is a need to find more places to store stuff that has accumulated over time. If this scenario sounds familiar, buying a quality, locally built storage shed from Heritage Backyards of Plymouth is the solution. The storage sheds built by Heritage Backyards are designed to each customer’s specifications, according to Owner Calvin Schlabach. Having previously worked in the recreational vehicle industry, he started the business in 2017. He became acquainted with someone else offering similar buildings, and that person served as a mentor and helped get the business started locally.
“The highest percentage of our customers simply need more storage space,” Schlabach says. “Some people use our sheds for a garage, a she-shed, or an out-of-the-house office space.”
be insulated and paneled. The exterior design is also open to the customer’s design tastes. The customer chooses the roof type, building dimensions and personalized features.
The Heritage Backyards website also suggests other uses for storage sheds. These buildings can be used as art or craft studios, hangouts for pets, children’s playhouses or even chicken coops.
Customers also have the choice of more than 25 paint colors and two colors of stain for the shed siding, as well as 12 colors of vinyl siding and five colors of metal siding. Shingles for the roof come in eight different colors, and there are 12 color choices for a metal roof.
There are many additional possible uses for sheds like these, Schlabach says. The potential is only limited by the customer’s imagination and needs. Every storage shed can be customized if needed. For example, a shed intended for anything other than storage may need to THE LAKES MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2022 / TownePost.com

ability to match the paint color of the shed to other buildings on the site. Matching the paint color of the new shed to the existing exterior paint on other buildings is a frequent request, Schlabach says. Heritage Backyards uses SherwinWilliams paints and can color-match to most finishes. A new, designer metal siding style has been added to the many options customers have. This style mimics wood but is manufactured out of steel, making it maintenance-free. It has four stock colors and comes with sevenlayer protection. Other choices that make each shed unique to each customer involve the type of windows, overhead door, and door design. Upgraded features include an interior wall on the cottage design option, interior and exterior lights, a porch and railing, a work bench, shelves, a workplace heater, or air

conditioning. People can be creative with their choices, adding various upgrades to the building including a loft. Each shed, however, comes with the assurance that top-of-the-line materials are offered, such as seamless, triple-layered rubber flooring, a radiant heat barrier to keep the interior of the shed cool, and the use of spruce framing lumber instead of pine in the construction. Heritage Backyard provides enhanced construction practices for each shed it constructs. For example, the floor joists used in their buildings are double the industry standard, resulting in the company claim that these floors are the stiffest in the industry. Wall studs, floor joists and roof rafters are set at every 16” instead of the typical 24” with the addition of hurricane ties securing the walls and roof together. Close attention to the details means adding a Heritage Backyard storage shed can enhance a property, according to Schlabach.

He says Heritage Backyards is not a company to cut corners. “The quality of the materials used, and how it is put together, is what we focus on,” he says. “We like to build a building that is aesthetically pleasing to the eye and is sturdy construction.” Each shed is built at the company’s Ligonier location, which ensures that each build meets the quality standards in place. It also means the wait time between the custom order and finished shed is minimal, and that any customizations can be efficiently implemented. Storage sheds can be custom built at Heritage Backyards or on-site. Currently, there is a four-week wait on custom orders. Customers can also visit the retail location and purchase a shed already completed from the lot.

Schlabach says services offered with each shed include free delivery and site setup. When a shed is delivered, the site is prepared using a multistep process. This includes leveling the site, adding a gravel or concrete pad, and even trimming the landscaping to fit the shed into the desired location. Heritage Backyards serves customers within a 50-mile radius of Plymouth. Customers typically do some preparation for the shed’s arrival, Schlabach says. This includes making sure there is a place to unload the shed and clearing a path to get it to the desired location. Any permits to comply with codes and regulations should be in place. Those who are looking for a storage shed and want to find out more can call and request a quote, or stop by the retail lot at 12131 U.S. Highway 6 in Plymouth. A quote can also be requested online. magine the somewhat unlikely odds of crossing paths with someone who can say that they’ve traveled halfway around the world to pursue a dream.
There is such a person ensconced in the midst of Elkhart County - a business owner who spent years perfecting his trade. Adeeb Kupty, an entrepreneur and owner of an established business based in Goshen, has come a very long way to create the gilded reputation that has established the foundation of Pro Paint & Finish. Pro Paint & Finish has been a mainstay of local commerce for more than 20 years, specializing in a broad range of painting and drywall contracting. The employees are prepared to handle projects ranging from a modest home painting job all the way up to large-scale construction work. They are fully equipped to work in new or existing construction, from residential to commercial.

While sitting down for a chat with Kupty, it becomes very evident that his expertise is not only highly reputable, but also very much in demand. His cell phone is just within reach, and consistently hums and pings with activity. Even while he’s home, grabbing a quick meal at his kitchen table, he is never quite off the clock. This fact makes the rise of Pro Paint & Finish all the more fascinating. Kupty arrived in America back in 1998, with a goal of continuing higher education immersed in biblical studies. However, he was aware of the practicality of finding employment. Emboldened by a sense of responsibility, Kupty sought to raise his profile in the community by making connections, scoping out potential job opportunities and building his resume. “I was a company of one,” Kupty says of his early days starting the business. “My first paint sprayer was a rental, and I was using my personal vehicle to take on side jobs.” As

his singular workforce became stronger, his confidence propelled him into visiting more sites and stores. Slowly, Kupty was tasked with larger projects, such as multifamily housing. He began to appreciate that this vision was transforming itself into a means to support his family, and he was willing to go the distance. Kupty decided to enroll in a series of business courses to continue building on his proficiency in painting. “I began painting as a way to support my family,” he says. “I wanted to do something to help us financially, and to build a life for ourselves.” Word of Kupty’s talents and work ethic took hold quickly, and a full-fledged business venture was born. In addition to providing a full spectrum of painting and drywalling options, Pro Paint & Finish has added other services along the way including power washing, home remodel accents, exterior house painting, wallpaper removal and application, color consultation, intumescent

Peppercorns are high in antioxidants. Black pepper is rich in a potent antioxidant called piperine that may help prevent free-radical damage to your cells. Piperine may also effectively fight inflammation in your body. Chronic inflammation is an underlying factor in many conditions including
arthritis, heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Black pepper may also improve blood-sugar control, lower cholesterol levels, contain cancer-fighting properties, promote gut health and help reduce appetite. It may also help you increase absorption of essential

GOLD STANDARD IT’S A LABOR OF LOVE FOR OWNER OF ARTISTRY IN GOLD & LADIES APPAREL
Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided
Christine Allen-Hackworth, owner of Artistry in Gold & Ladies Apparel in North Webster, says she’s never minded going to work because she loves what she does. “I’m very fortunate because I’m able to enjoy what I do,” Allen-Hackworth says. “I come in to my shop and I’m ready to help
people. I love my customers and it’s fun to make their day better. I get a big kick out of what I do. It’s a great feeling to be able to feel like you can put a smile on someone else’s face too. People are happy when they come in here. They can see that I enjoy what I’m doing.” She has adopted that work philosophy for a long time.

“Before I started this business I worked at Chapman Jewelers in Warsaw, Indiana, and Duckweed’s Ladies Apparel in North Webster,” she says. “I was able to learn a lot about how to work with customers and what they are specifically looking for. I also was able to learn a lot about jewelry. I enjoyed getting to know what tastes my customers have, and what kind of jewelry and clothes they like.” Allen-Hackworth took everything she learned through the years and decided to strike out on her own. In 1997 she opened Artistry in Gold & Ladies Apparel. “I’m looking forward to having some kind of anniversary celebration to share with my
customers,” she says. “I think it will be a lot of fun. I’ve had a lot of great times here and I know my customers have too. Our main business is a jewelry store, but we also offer a lot of other great women’s apparel and other items.”
Allen-Hackworth says her business is a fullservice jewelry store. “We have diamonds, and precious and semiprecious gems,” she says. “We also have a selection of gold and silver jewelry that a lot of our customers really like. We can help

Allen-Hackworth believes she has had a lot of repeat business because customers have been extremely satisfied. “I have a lot of come-back customers, and that’s what you want when you are running a business,” she says. “I love seeing the smiles on my customers’ faces. I have really been able to get to know quite a few of them over the years, and I know just what they like and what they are looking for when they come in. I also like seeing a lot of new faces that come through my door, and getting to know them and what they like.” Allen-Hackworth was happy with the jewelry side of the business so she decided to offer a boutique with upscale ladies apparel. “A lot of the items we have are unique and special,” she says. “We offer a lot of pieces that are hard to find in other stores and places. I’ve received a lot of compliments on what we have to offer.”

STEADY GROWTH HORN OF PLENTY IS A TRUE COMMUNITY UNDERTAKING Writer / Amy Lant-Wenger Photography Provided
One of the very first things that commands notice in rural areas of north-central Indiana is the abundance of lush farmland. Almost as far as the eyes can see, acres of soil serve as the fertile grounds through which an abundance of crops are grown. It is an example of nature at its finest, a creation born of necessity. To see these practices and principles being faithfully executed, so to speak, consider a visit to Horn of Plenty in rural Middlebury.
they’re getting the finest product available while supporting local, small businesses. The Horn of Plenty idea was conceived more than a decade ago when a group of farmers convened to discuss ways that they could exercise some control over how and where their crops would go, in a manner

Located among a quaint and quiet farmstead owned by Noah and Rebecca Miller, it is a business venture that encompasses far more than a simple warehouse storefront. It is a true community endeavor. Horn of Plenty is a name that represents an ever-blossoming agricultural cooperative - one that is fueled entirely by the efforts of local farmers. The co-op membership consists of more than 50 farming families, all of whom contribute homegrown meats, eggs and produce for retail sale. By weaving together this communal enterprise, the partnerships are most beneficial to everyone involved. It is a means of income for the growers and their families, and the consumers come away with the reassurance that

that would be most advantageous to both the sellers and the buyers. “The main drive was to let the farmers decide,” recalls David Yoder, who currently oversees the sales aspect of Horn of Plenty. Among the families who contribute to the collaborative cycle, there are those who supply food on a full-time basis, while others flow with the seasons. In order to join, there is a series of guidelines that must be stringently followed, including a commitment to chemical-free production. There are no enhancements, no GMOs and no shortcuts, and only organic methods for disease suppression and pest control are used. The items must also be meticulously cleaned and packaged according to the bylaws. Presently, Horn of Plenty sells beef, chicken, pork, turkey, duck, lamb and fresh brown eggs. Produce varies with the calendar, but typically includes tomatoes, green beans, cucumbers, zucchini, berries, melons and sweet corn, to name a few. Peak strawberry season has passed, the men advise, but just around the bend there will be sweet corn, melons and blueberries some of the best flavors of summer. Because of this natural approach to raising food, Horn of Plenty is actually a year-round operation in which everyone is mindful of even the smallest details, such as planning the planting,

soil conditions and weather. As is generally the case with Midwestern climate conditions, things can and do change rapidly. Miller and Yoder both share insights on what a typical year can look like when preparing for a growing season. The farmers involved in the co-op design their crops through planting specifications, followed later by the delivery of their items to the main Middlebury site. There is a commission percentage off the overhead costs, and new members experience this after they receive their first payout. The items are marketed for various outlets including wholesale and retail. The loyalty to their customers is also evident in that they are able to keep folks apprised on what types of produce are available, what their peak seasons are and what awaits on the horizon. Occasionally some of the crops are sold at nearby auctions. At all times, in all ways, “we only sell what we grow,” Yoder says. After 12 years, Horn of Plenty has solidified itself as a rural institution with a professional pedigree. Yet there is more to accomplish in the future according to Miller. “The growth curve has been so steep and we’ve been so busy trying to keep up with the growth,” he says. Because of the success they have achieved thus far, the investors were able to finance the construction of a main warehouse in Middlebury back in 2019. Miller hopes to

Ryan Welch believes being a positive influence helped him win the 2021-2022 State Assistant Principal of the Year award, as well as District 2 Assistant Principal of the Year honors, for his job at Riverside Intermediate School in Plymouth. “The Indiana Association of School Principals [IASP] is a statewide organization to support and serve school leaders in Indiana,” Welch says. “I was nominated by my building principal, Kyle Coffman. This process required multiple letters of recommendation and an application. This led to me being recognized a lengthy application,” he says. “The as the District 2 Assistant Principal of the application had me explain my Year. I have put in place a few initiatives that I highlighted in my application. These included starting student trips to Miller’s assisted-living complex. I wanted our students to be able to learn from others, and I think this also helped their communication skills and helped the students develop empathy for others.”

Welch believes that he could not have won the award if not for the amazing staff at Riverside, and the great community support. “People have bought in to the great things that Plymouth Community Schools does every day, and I have been given the opportunity to lead people in this corporation,” he says. Welch has been at Riverside for nine years. He spent three years there as a fifth-grade language arts and social studies teacher, and six years as the assistant principal. Welch believes the 2021-2022 school year was special because students and staff were able to get back to a mostly normal school year. “Students were walking the halls and able to participate in all activities,” he says. “It

was refreshing to see students’ faces walking through our building and be able to interact with them.” Welch studied elementary education at Ball State from 2008 to 2012. “While at Ball State I spent a lot of time my junior and senior year at Wes-Del Elementary School,” he says. “Initially I volunteered at after-school programs and in classrooms when my schedule allowed. I ended up student teaching in a secondgrade classroom under Mrs. Lisa Teagle. I had a great experience and had great mentors during this time. I ended up being hired as a fourth-grade teacher at Wes-Del in 2012 for the 2012-2013 school year. This time in my life taught me so much and it really became the bedrock for who I am as an educator today.” Welch has some positive plans and goals for the next school year.

Goze notes that PC Source also services and replaces hardware parts. “We do that on most PCs, laptops, all-in-ones, servers, tablets, and network hardware,” Goze says. Goze says people can take preventative measures for their desktops and laptops. “Keep your computer current with installed windows updates, turn off unnecessary services or background apps and programs, and run disk defragment every six months or so,” Goze says. “Then you are off to a good start. You should also have a current security software installed.” Goze has nothing but praise for Plymouth. “Plymouth is a great smalltown community with thriving businesses that offers a variety of choices for shopping, dining and recreation,” Goze says. “There are several parks where you can enjoy some outdoor rest and relaxation. It’s big enough for what I need, and has a down-home comfort feeling. It is close enough to larger towns if I would
happen to want to travel there, and it won’t take too long.” Goze adds that people in Plymouth look out for each other.
“The local community has a strong relationship with one another,” Goze says. “We have positioned ourselves as having reputable service and are wellnetworked within the Marshall County area.”

Some of my fondest childhood memories are picnics at the lake with family and friends. We enjoyed Italian submarine sandwiches from our local Italian deli, homemade macaroni salad my dad made, and my mom’s famous brownies with rich chocolate frosting. We enjoyed our meal and then took turns sailing around the lake in my family’s sailboat. You don’t need fancy food to have a picnic. It doesn’t all have to be homemade. Play to your strengths. You do need a little bit of planning, good food, and friends and family. Here are five tips for enjoying the perfect picnic.

1. MAKE A MENU AND INVITE YOUR GUESTS My parents owned a restaurant and catering company, so I believe it’s important to eat good, high-quality food at your picnic. It doesn’t all have to be homemade. Don’t overdo it. Set a budget. I prefer to provide the food for my guests instead of a pitchin/potluck. It makes things easier for everyone and you won’t have duplicate items. Also, guests won’t feel added pressure of what to bring and they can enjoy themselves. Who knows - maybe your guests will reciprocate and invite you to the next picnic or party. Set a budget and think of your signature dishes (what you make best), and work from there. I like to serve either fried chicken or sandwiches at a picnic. I like to buy fried chicken from a local restaurant or grocery, or make good sandwiches (ham and cheese on French bread, or BLTs on French bread). For the sides and dessert,
I like to serve fruit (cut-up pineapple, strawberries and watermelon), homemade pasta salad (with a vinaigrette or salad dressing), lemon bars, brownies and cookies. You can purchase the desserts from your favorite bakery. I like to have plenty of water and canned drinks on hand with slices of lime and lemon. I prefer to keep the number of guests at the picnic to 10 or fewer. It’s a nice number of guests and allows everyone to hear each other talk, and it won’t break your budget. Picnic Pro Tip: Don’t forget to pack some snacks. Hungry guests will appreciate some snacks at the picnic before you eat the main meal. Bonus Picnic Pro Tip: Don’t forget salt and pepper, mayo, mustard and other condiments. I like to use packets so each
guest can take a few packets if they need to. 2. MAKE A LIST OF PICNIC SUPPLIES I don’t want to waste money buying what I already have on hand. Make sure you have enough extra cups, plates, silverware and napkins. Make a list of what you may need to buy, such as disposable tablecloths. Picnic Pro Tip: Try to use plastic plates and cups if possible. Plastic plates are sturdier than paper plates. If you do use paper, this is the time to splurge on thick paper plates and cups. Bonus Picnic Pro Tip: Keep picnic supplies in one location. I keep plastic cups, plates, silverware, napkins and tablecloths on a separate shelf in the pantry. I’m always ready to plan a picnic. If you don’t have these supplies, it’s an inexpensive

investment for cute, plastic picnic supplies. 3. PLAN WHERE YOU PICNIC Look at your favorite city or local park and reserve a covered table or two. If you’re not able to reserve a table, you can always find empty picnic tables and/or a large area of grass to put down extra tablecloths. If kids will be at your picnic, try to find a park with
a playground or spray pad so the kids will have something to do after eating. Picnic Pro Tip: Try to find a local park where you can park your vehicle close to the picnic area. This will make it easier to unload and load up picnic supplies. Bonus Picnic Pro Tip: Look at your local weather forecast and try to plan your picnic
on a dry day that’s not too hot. Plan your gathering early in the day or late in the day for optimal weather conditions. 4.PACK AHEAD I like to pack a supply bag (cups, plates, silverware, napkins, paper towels for any messes, wet wipes, garbage bags and tablecloths) in advance. Keep all the drinks and food in the fridge until shortly before leaving to guarantee they will be cold. I pack the food and drinks in two soft cooler bags with ice packs. Pack some bubbles, Frisbees, hula hoops and other toys for the kids. I also like to bring a wireless speaker to play music during the picnic. Picnic Pro Tip: Allow yourself an extra 30 minutes before you leave, and double check your picnic list to make sure you have everything packed and ready to go. Try to keep everything in a few large, soft cooler bags or coolers so you don’t have a lot of small bags to carry. Bonus Picnic Pro Tip: Pack a few foldable chairs just in case someone might want to sit in a chair. Pack a couple of spray water bottles with fans. I have a few of these on hand and they are a perfect way to cool off on a hot day. They are usually under $10 at most stores. These are good to have on hand for concerts, sporting events and other outdoor activities. 5. HAVE FUN Don’t stress about your picnic. This is the time to ask any guests who arrive early to help unpack the car, and carry the bags and coolers to the picnic table and set up. Take a break and pour drinks for guests, and turn on the music while setting up the meal. You spent a lot of time planning and now it’s time to have fun, enjoy the food and spend time with your guests. The extra planning makes for a successful picnic party. Picnic Pro Tip: Don’t forget the games. Let the kids play with bubbles, hula hoops, Frisbees and other toys. Bonus Picnic Pro Tip: Once you get home, relax and congratulate yourself on a fantastic picnic.

WHAT’S IN A NAME? TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF THE ORIGINS OF LAKES-AREA PLACE NAMES Writer / Jeff Kenney Photography Provided
Lakes-area readers, like people everywhere, pass by familiar towns, cities and county demarcations with likely little thought as to the origins of their names. See how many of these historical name-related questions you can answer without looking at the explanations that follow. Many towns, bodies of water and locations in the area derive their names from Native American words, but this county seat takes its name from one of several Potawatomi leaders who all shared the same name, including one who helped negotiate the end of the Fox Wars in the 1730s. Answer: The name Winamac, county seat of Pulaski County, belonged to several warriors and leaders of centuries past. Winamac is a Potawatomi version of the name Wilamet (the Eastern Algonquian version of the name). At least one man bearing that name was an ally of New France in the early 1700s, though others named Winamac were prominent during the war of 1812, one an ally and one who fought against the U.S. in that conflict. Which area town was aptly named for the president of a major railroad company? Answer: North Judson in Starke County was originally platted in 1859 as Brantwood, but its post office, a year later, was named North Judson for William D. Judson, president of the Cincinnati & Chicago Railroad, one of several rail lines laid through the town. Since Judson, Indiana, already existed, the “North” portion of its name was probably added to avoid confusion.
What area county seat owes its name to the New England-derived settlers who helped found it? Answer: Early settlers to what is today Marshall County in the 1830s included descendants of the New England “Yankee” English Puritans of the east coast of the U.S. The county seat of Plymouth, not surprisingly, was named after Plymouth, Massachusetts, legendary as the landing site of the Mayflower ship in 1620. Plymouth, Indiana, was incorporated as a town in 1851. What area county was named for a famous inventor? Answer: Fulton County, which dates to 1836, was named after Robert Fulton, well-known as the inventor of the steamboat. The area has several interesting name origins. The county seat of Rochester, laid out in 1835, was named for Rochester, New York, the hometown of Alexander Chamberlain. Adjacent Lake Manitou, actually the result of damming two smaller local lakes, is a Potawatomi name meaning “Devil’s Lake,” due to persisting Native Americans legends that a monster lived in it.
Which area city derives its name from the French language for “the door?” Answer: LaPorte, both the county and city name, means “the door” in French, named since French explorers and fur traders (starting in the 1670s) utilized a wide Native American trail passing through the forest to the prairie, which served as a sort of doorway. LaPorte, the city, was settled in 1832. Ten years later, the first medical school in the Midwest, La Porte Medical School, was founded, with one of its graduates, William Worrall Mayo, going on to establish what would become the famous Mayo Clinic in 1889 in Minnesota. 70 / THE LAKES MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2022 / TownePost.com
This area county seat was named for a general in the Revolutionary War. Answer: The fact that the Knox post office, in Starke County, dates to 1820 may help explain why the town was named in tribute to American Revolutionary War General Henry Knox, who died in 1806, not many years before the post office was established. The actual city of Knox was founded in 1851. Henry Knox had been prominent in the Continental Army and later the U.S. Army, working closely with George Washington. He was the first secretary of war in the U.S. as well. This small but notable area town takes its name from a St. Louis stove manufacturer. Answer: Henry Harrison Culver launched the Culver Brothers stove company, later the Wrought Iron Range Company, in 1864. After his retirement, Culver eventually launched the military academy bearing his name (today, with the addition of Culver Girls Academy, its official name is Culver Academies), in 1894. The adjacent town of Marmont voted to change its name to Culver in honor of the man and the school, shortly thereafter. This prominent city in the wider lakes area was named for a geographic feature of a body of water. Answer: South Bend’s name comes from its being literally at the south bend of the St. Joseph River, originally used by the fur traders who established trading posts in the area. By 1829 the post office of the growing town bore the name Southold, Allen County, Indiana, though the proliferation of other communities named Southold at the time likely led to its name being changed to the current one. In 1831 the city was laid out as the county seat of St. Joseph County. Which local town owes its name to the influence of its heavily German population? Answer: The town of Bremen, incorporated in 1871, was first named New Bremen by the predominantly German settlers who called it home in its earlier years. Eventually the “New” portion of the name was dropped. Which community in the wider lakes area bears the name of a Shawnee scout of the War of 1812? Answer: Logansport, settled around 1826, pays tribute to Shawnee warrior James Logan, a scout for U.S. forces in the area during the War of 1812. Located at the confluence of the Wabash and Eel rivers, the “port” portion of its name fit the town as well. Which local county was named for a Supreme Court justice? Answer: Marshall County
was formed one year after the 1835 death of John Marshall, the fourth chief justice of the United States from 1801 to his death, and former secretary of state. Speaking of things judicial, the first courthouse in the county was built in Plymouth in 1840 and the present courthouse, currently being restored and renovated, first opened in 1872. A heavy Polish influence is visible in names of which area county and the city serving as its county seat? Answer: Kosciusko County was named after American Revolutionary War General Tadeusz Kościuszko, a military leader from the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth with an impressive record in his homeland and the U.S. He died in 1817, just 19 years before the Indiana county that bears his name was organized. Its county seat is named for Warsaw, the capital of Poland, where Kościuszko graduated from the Corps of Cadets. If you were tempted to answer this question with Pulaski County, you would have been partly correct. Pulaski County, dating to 1818, was named for Count Casimir Pulaski, a Polish soldier known for saving George Washington’s life during the Revolutionary War. The county seat of Pulaski, of course, is Winamac, whose name is not Polish in origin and is referenced in another question in this quiz. What area town takes its name from an area of Kentucky? Answer: The Marshall County town of Bourbon was platted in 1853, with many of its early settlers hailing from Bourbon Township in Kentucky. What small area town is alleged to have inspired the name of a famous fictional figure? Answer: Though earlier known as the town of Rye, Toto is best known as having been the bargain capital of the region for decades in the 20th century, even drawing deal-hunters from as far away as Chicago to its unusual conglomeration of discount stores. Though that aspect of the town has changed, the rumor has persisted that “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” author L. Frank Baum was inspired to name his Dorothy character’s dog after seeing the name of the town on a calendar or other item (Baum’s family once had a residence on nearby Bass Lake). The claim has been debated through the years and remains officially unproven.

Myron Hershberger | (574) 773-0622 71044 County Rd. 11 Nappanee, IN 46550 This port city in the area takes its name from a body of water and a roadway. Answer: Michigan City was founded after Major Isaac C. Elston of Crawfordsville bought the land in 1830 and mapped out the city without even having visited the site yet. He named it for being the terminus of the Michigan Road, the former Indian trail and earliest road to northern Indiana from Indianapolis (and, in fact, all the way from the Ohio River). Of course, the city sits on the shores of Lake Michigan and was a bustling post town by the mid-19th century. This area city, once called “the City of Churches,” takes its name from a South American city. Answer: Established in 1836, Valparaiso (which means “Vale of Paradise” in old Spanish) takes its name from a city in Chile. Originally named Portersville, Valparaiso, Indiana, served as the county seat of Porter County, which drew its name from U.S. Naval Commander David Porter. Porter served in several wars, fighting

near that Chilean city in the Battle of Valparaiso during the War of 1812. Porter County, Indiana, was organized in the 1830s. This area county takes its name, like so many others, from a military hero, though the two names are actually spelled differently. Answer: A number of area counties and towns bear the names of military or political figures who died not many years before the founding of the so-named entity. Starke County is no different, except its spelling differs from that of its namesake: General John Stark, who commanded New Hampshire troops at the Battle of Bunker Hill in 1775 in the Revolutionary War and defeated the British at the Battle of Bennington in 1777. Stark died in 1822, just 13 years before Starke County was founded in 1835 (it was organized in 1850). Early maps of the county indeed demonstrate its name was spelled “Stark,” and while no solid evidence clarifies why the “e” was added at the suffix of the name, the most plausible source is a clerical error from the state government in Indianapolis.

IN THEIR NATURE
LOCAL FORESTRY CLUB MEMBERS PUT THEIR KNOWLEDGE TO THE TEST Writer / Lois Tomaszewski Photography Provided
People who work with youth want to make sure that everyone finds a place where they can succeed. This is evident in the decades-long success of an Argos-based forestry club. The group is associated with the county 4-H system. The school system provides meeting space, bus transportation and other needs for the club. Students have
to join 4-H individually. It is open to any student who wants to take part in either of the two age-based divisions, including students who are home schooled. Students in the program compete against other teams in the state and even on the national level. The club is moderated by Gene Cooper, a former high school science teacher, and Jennifer Stults, a middle school science teacher. Cooper is stepping down after more than 60 years at the helm, with

several competitions reaching the highest levels. He took his first team to state in 1960. “Once I started teaching, I started this activity,” Cooper says. “There were students who were left out and they couldn’t do what they could do, which was to work at something, go and earn a prize.” The prize was reaching state and national competitions by demonstrating their
knowledge of forestry. Students begin preparing for the competition in the fall. The area contest is held in October or November, the state contest is held in December, and the nationals, for teams that qualify at state, are held in the summer. The junior division is for students in third through eighth grade, and the senior division is for high school students. At the state contest, members of the junior division have a daunting task. They are required to identify 55 varieties of trees native to Indiana, name the seeds for 25 trees, identify 12 samples of wood, name 25 insects or identify the damage caused by specific insects, and name 15 tree diseases by looking at a sample of each disease. These requirements increase for the older age group, Cooper says. The competition is coordinated by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Forestry, and the FFA. ww w.c oll ins ho me s.c om

While the competition is an opportunity for the students to achieve accolades, understanding forestry and learning about trees is its own reward, Cooper says.
Medical and Surgical Group
“If they develop a love and understanding about trees, and federal and state parks, that really is enough,” he says. Learning about trees requires students to study and research to prepare for questions, but at the national level there are other skills required to achieve the top spot. The Argos-based group has done so before. The national competition requires competitors to identify trees from all over the United States such as the balsam fir, lodgepole pine, Sitka spruce and cabbage palm. There are more insects to identify and more diseases to diagnose. Students are also required to demonstrate their understanding of how to measure a tree, and determine the board feet of lumber that could be obtained if that tree was harvested. Other tests involve using a compass and pacing, reading topographical maps, and participating in team competitions in a quiz-bowl format. While Cooper’s visits to the national competition have been numerous, Stults is attending this year’s competition for the first time. She has been part of the club mentorship for three years, but the nationals were canceled in 2020 and held virtually in 2021 due to COVID-19. She and the team members are looking forward to the trip to Jackson’s Mill in Weston, West Virginia. “This is a positive thing for the kids,” Stults says. “The other students at school recognize that these students are in the

forestry club. It’s nice to see other kids respond to the teams’ success.” While the focus on forestry and a successful season is an accomplishment, Cooper and Stults also see students achieving other successes and enhancing their lifelong learning. They learn the importance of preparation, working together as a team and supporting each other. Study skills such as memorization techniques also impact future endeavors. “It gives students a boost of confidence that they don’t always get in class,” Stults says.
