“This means that we as nurse practitioners are paid directly by our patients, rather than through insurance companies,” Singleton says. “With the middle man eliminated we can spend as much time as our patients need to address all their health-care concerns in a comfortable, personable manner.”

Who are you going to call when you need routine medical care, and you live in North Liberty? Access to health care in a rural area like this can be limited, until recently when Sara Singleton and Tiffany Richards opened Liberty Center Family Medicine.

A SPECIAL KIND OF CARE PATIENTS ARE THE FOCUS AT LIBERTY CENTER

practice of most health-care offices.

For more than five years they discussed opening a practice.

Richards says there are benefits to this arrangement.

With Singleton having been raised in North Liberty, and Richards in the Koontz Lake and Walkerton areas, they knew there are few options for health care without requiring a bit of a drive. Singleton and Richards, both nurse practitioners, wanted to bring their medical training to their community, making it accessible and affordable.

It is a direct primary care operation, which uses a membership base instead of the conventional insurance-reliant

“We set the schedule, we get to learn our members, and can allow for the extra time that may be needed for a more sensitive visit, or even just education regarding a diagnosis,” Richards says.

“We can offer longer patient visits, allowing the patient not to feel hurried during an appointment,” she explains.

By limiting the practice size, we can accommodate those same-day visits that are sometimes needed unexpectedly.”

“We also can limit our practice size. Provider panels can be over 1,000 patients, leading to provider burnout and patient dissatisfaction.

This level of personalized care means members get access directly to Singleton

Direct primary care provides the same services as traditional medical practices. Liberty Center Family Medicine can obtain patient records from other providers, order testing and specialty care, and refill prescriptions. An EKG machine is also available at Liberty Center Family Medicine. The practice also does annual physicals, chronic-disease management, and acute-care needs for members, as well as blood draws for lab testing as part of the membership fee.

Williams originally purchased the land as a grain and cattle farm where he raised cattle and had a roadside market. He originally sold beef and eggs but started a truck crop soon after he began to grow garden greens and fall crops. Peas, pumpkins, green beans, gourds and more were up for sale. To help get the attention of those driving by who might stop by, Williams created a little pumpkin display consisting of a pumpkin family seated on top of a picnic table. Made of pumpkin

What originally started as a means to sell produce creatively grew and continued to grow “to a point where the Ohio Roadside Marketing Conference recognized grandpa as one of the founders of agritourism in the country,” says Becker, whose grandfather went on to speak around the country letting people know about what he was doing. Not just creative displays but things

like hayrides and mazes were pioneered by Pumpkin who did so because he embraced and uplifted his community.

Pumpkin Fantasyland also makes its own ice cream and has a delicious pumpkin flavor. They also make their own pumpkin bread and “our pumpkin donuts are pretty famous,” says Becker, who last year had 23 states sign the guest registry.

Spanning from October 1 to the 31, Pumpkin Fantasyland will host a Safe Kids Day which is in collaboration with Ligonier city. On Safe Kids Day children and families are given the chance to interact with city services and watch informative demonstrations. The street, water, fire, police and other departments of Lignoier put on a touch-a-truck type event and perform K9 and fire hose demonstrations. There is a full service restaurant on site and refreshments are available throughout the farm.

hemp plants were germinated by the Edith Rose team and planted by hand. Summer recalls hand-watering from buckets for 30 days to establish the hemp plants in the first year. The crop is still carefully maintained to ensure a quality product for their customers.

The main ingredients for these products are grown on Eytcheson’s grandmother’s farm. With the help of Purdue Extension’s resources for hemp growers, Edith Rose Company’s three-acres of crops continue to thrive. Insecticides and herbicides are not used on the crops. Instead, pests are controlled naturally using crop-friendly bugs that feed on insects that damage the Thecrops.first

Edith Rose Company’s gummies are made from oil extracted from the hemp flower, which they say is more effective than oil extracted from hemp seeds. There is a difference in the quality and potency of products that use the flower, as opposed to the seed.

Oil extraction is one part of the process that the Edith Rose team does not directly oversee. It is a complicated process that requires specialized equipment that is expensive to own and Everyoperate.other

stage of the process is quality controlled and managed in-house, the owners say. Through trial and error as well as market sampling, any new product is evaluated before it is offered to customers. These rigorous procedures are in place to keep Edith Rose Company’s products at the highest level of quality.

One of the challenges is working to overcome negative stereotypes about the hemp-based products they sell. Some customers expect the shop to resemble a head shop from the 1960s and 1970s, Summer says. These customers are

obligations made it difficult for his father and brother to take on the added responsibility. Miller decided to go it alone. It has been a learning process, and he upgraded his original plasma cutter to a larger model in April of 2021.

One of the lessons Lyndon Miller has learned as the owner of Millers Artistic Steel is patience. He fashions metal signs out of 4’x8’ steel panels using a sophisticated machine to cut out the design. Patience, he says, is the key to completing the job to the customer’s and his own satisfaction.

design is transmitted to the cutter, and the machine follows the lines and pattern to create the sign. An arc is created during operation that is transmitted into a beam, which is the cutting mechanism. The beam follows the computer cutting lines to reproduce the design in steel.

Customers often submit their own designs and images, or Miller can craft a design for them. Sometimes he uses the customer’s design as a base and adds more details to that design. The customer then sees the proof and approves it before it is cut out on the plasma cutter.

Once the design is in place, plasma cutting is not a long process. Miller says many of the signs he makes are completed in five to 10 minutes. It is the design process that takes longer.

“If you are not patient, there is a lot that can go wrong in a short period of time,” Miller says.

The seeds for what grew into the Greencroft network of nonprofit communities began within the walls of the Eighth Street Mennonite Church. The fellowship launched a program to assist church members who were widowed. Five years later in 1967, the mission took on the Greencroft name.

“It means we’re driven by people, not profit,” Whitaker says. “Every penny we make goes into creating a vibrant community and into the care of our people. It’s about a community that cares for each other - a continuingcare living community that provides a safe, secure environment for those 55plus, with the options of independent living, assisted living and long-term nursing

“We have a long history of putting people first in Goshen,” says Sheena Whitaker, director of marketing. “Our culture of kindness, family and faith runs deep.” Today, Greencroft represents several networks of retirement communities located in various places throughout northern Indiana. Whitaker says that having a nonprofit status is an important distinction.

So what else makes Greencroft Goshen so vastly different from similar neighborhoods? “Greencroft Goshen is different because it is a community within a community,” Whitaker explains. “We are a faith-based organization that believes in the values mentioned above. Residents have the opportunity to have a maintenance-free lifestyle, allowing them to be a vibrant part of the community.”

Kids are curious by nature. Everything is brand new and exciting to them, and confusing. Kids observe their parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles every day. They pick up habits both good and bad, and some of these habits they don’t truly grasp. They’ll say, “Why do I have to eat my dinner when I just want to play?” or, “Why is mom adding these weird green leaves to the soup?” or, “But I saw dad use the knife, so why can’t

For example, “That is a strawberry. It’s sweet, see? We’re going to cut it up and add it to our salad.” It makes for learning moments.

The biggest thing is that I explain why I’m doing something. He loves to grind up spices for me in my mortar and pestle, and we smell the spices. I tell him what they are and we grind them together.

What if we, as parents, grandparents and adults started to include our kiddos in the process? Now, I’m not telling you to have your 3-yearold make you a five-course meal. That’s insane. But the simple things, the seemingly mundane tasks, they can do. Including your kids in a fun and educational process to help teach them how to prep, cook and clean up for meals, especially dinner, will be beneficial not just for your family, but also for their future. Kids are smart. They pick up behaviors and habits, and truly

This may seem like a burden or even an annoyance, but trust me, involving kids in the kitchen will give them a sense of responsibility, disperse the chore and make lasting memories. One of the worst train wrecks in U.S. history was the 1918 collision of two trains in the Hammond area, which killed 86 people and injured another 127. Since then, residents of the area have claimed to hear knocks on their doors around the hour of the 4 a.m. train wreck, among other associated tales.

One of the largest known mass ghost hunts took place between Chesterton and Valparaiso in 1964, when a ghostly figure in white was reportedly seen on a road in the area. That autumn, some 6,000 to 8,000 people each night were driving the road seeking the specter, leading to the state police being called in to direct traffic. One trooper reported that the presence of so many drunken, armed people was scarier than any possible phantom.

The Barbee Hotel in the Warsaw area has long been rumored to house the ghosts of gangsters (including Al Capone) who frequented it, as well as a child who died at the site prior to construction of the hotel.

Up the road in the South Bend/Michiana area, the ghost of famous footballer George Gipp (the subject of the storied Knute Rockne “Win one for the Gipper” speech) is said to haunt Washington Hall on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. The ghosts of the former owner or maid employed at the former mansion housing the Hacienda restaurant in Mishawaka have been spotted through the years in the eatery, whose staff and guests have also reported lights, faucets and other pieces of equipment operating on their own.

Visitors and staff at the Old Kosciusko County Jail in Warsaw have reported hearing footsteps, seeing strange apparitions and feeling unexplained touches in the old building, in use from 1870 to 1982.

Other allegedly haunted sites in the area include the Joseph D. Oliver mansion and an area of Primrose Road, both in South Bend, as well as the Elkhart Civic Theatre and Bristol Opera House.

Many area pioneers claimed to see a sea-serpent-like creature in the waters of the Fulton County lake, though it’s been some years since a reported sighting.

A Few Further Road Trips

There are more allegedly haunted places in the lakes region, of course, than are mentioned here (a Google search will undoubtedly pull the interested researcher into an array of rabbit trails on the topic), but the above may give readers enough to raise a few neck hairs, at least, in time for Halloween.

The Central State Hospital in Indianapolis in the early 20th century.

If you’re in the mood for a lengthier road trip, the former site of Central State Hospital (earlier known as the Central Indiana Hospital for the Insane) near downtown Indianapolis is worth a visit, not only for the inevitable legends of its property being haunted, but also because the fascinating Indiana Medical History Museum operates today out of its former pathology building. Besides a history lesson embedded in the architecture itself, a guided tour of the museum makes for an engrossing on-the-spot encounter with past Indiana medical practices and treatment of mental illness.

“I do a little bit of everything and am always happy to show up in the morning,” Worsham says.

Richard Worsham is the co-founder and lead designer of Janus Motorcycles. Underneath that title, Worsham does everything from service and repair to making business decisions and planning for the future of the company. An example of this can be found in the way that Janus is starting to fabricate its own motorcycle parts, a project which Worsham spearheaded and that he hopes will lead to all in house fabrication in the future.

Janus Motorcycles manufactures a line of unique bikes with small displacement and an unlimited potential in customizable style. Small displacement means having a light weight bike with a smaller engine than is typically used. Some may call these bikes small, but for Janus and its team small displacement helps define their corner of the market — a corner that has progressed naturally from a couple of friends with a focus on vintage repair to the established and thriving business it is today. They are a business that is held up by its amazing team and grows through the fluid leadership of its founders.

While pursuing a degree in classical architecture Worsham got around on an old vintage Garelli Moped. Needing to do work on his moped, Worsham found a local repair shop that specialized in vintage mopeds. When the man who ran the shop, Devin, and Worsham met they hit it off and would work summers together doing repair and customization work.

Through that work Devin and Worsham, the co-founders of Janus, built up a relationship with a lot of local, predominantly Amish, vendors. They started working on 50cc vehicles and eventually moved to a larger platform with 250cc engines. From there they kept growing into what they are today. Janus Motorcycles started in Goshen in a rented space in the back corner of a building.

If we continue to “take” and never return in equal share; if we borrow and never repay, we steal from the earth, from that which makes the soil fertile and able to nourish all things that grow from it.

Some refer to the soil as “Mother Earth.” Fertile soil is the source of what feeds us, clothes us, and shelters us. In so doing, we are borrowing that which makes the soil full of life; in the grains which takes its nourishment; in the forage which feeds our livestock; in the timber which provides our shelter.

If in greed we coerce the earth to give more through the overuse of synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides without replenishing the organic structure, the soil ceases to provide.

Composting manures improves the fluidity of the manures by taking on the role of soil bacteria in breaking down the manure components (preconditioning) into molecular structures necessary for soil chelation and plant root absorption.
