A PRACTICE WITH PURPOSE MURRAY LAW GIVES CLIENTS CRUCIAL GUIDANCE WITH ESTATE PLANNING, ELDER LAW AND MORE Writer / Darcie Dodds Schott Photographer / Tony Straw
What were your priorities when you turned 18? There’s a good chance that visiting a lawyer to create an estate plan was not on the list. Most young adults would only have a plan in place if a life-changing event occurred, such as the death of a loved one or a personal medical emergency. Tim Murray of Murray Law in Winamac takes strategic steps to change this perspective. He is passionate about educating people on the importance and accessibility of planning for their future, because the reality is that most people don’t address their estate planning matters until much later in life. When he asks people, “Do you have an estate plan in place?” and their answer is no, he makes an important point. “That’s incorrect, because at age 18, the state of Indiana has a plan in place for every individual,” he says. That plan likely doesn’t take what you want into account. Murray understands that talking about legal matters is something most people try to avoid, so he approaches the discussion in a friendly manner to set people at ease. He and his team advertise on social media to reach a broad audience, and he holds monthly workshops in his office, every

people and educates them according to their unique needs. This education can shine a light on factors people may never think about. “This is not your mother’s will from 40 years ago,” he says. “Rules and the laws are different today. Whether the matter is a will or a trust, education is key.” Murray explains that everyone should have a plan as soon as they turn 18. The four most critical documents include a financial power of attorney, a health care directive, a will, and a trust, if called for.
second Wednesday at 6 p.m. and third Tuesday at 10 a.m., which introduce topics important to estate planning and elder care. The workshops are free and open to the public, and a video recording of the
workshop can always be found on the firm’s website. Anyone who attends in person or watches the workshop online is offered a free consultation and what Murray calls a Vision Meeting, where he gets to know

He encourages people to subscribe to a maintenance program. This entails an annual meeting to review pertinent legal documents as well as updates on changes in life and the law, an annual membersonly social event, and unlimited open communication with the Murray Law team. At age 18 a person’s legal review will usually be simple. Things can start to get more

complicated at around age 35 when people may have more assets and dependents to care for, and more comprehensive planning may be needed, including asset protection and long-term health care issues. Murray says there is a payoff for being on a regular maintenance program because with proper maintenance, a person can be reassured that their estate plan will work during their lifetime and provide minimal burden for surviving family members later. To support further education, each year Murray funds a scholarship that is awarded to a graduating senior at each of the two high schools in Pulaski County. He occasionally encounters a former scholarship recipient around town and enjoys hearing how the award impacted the student and their future. In addition to providing high school scholarships, he also employs a high school intern each school year to help the student learn office skills and gain confidence interacting with professional adults. This year’s intern is

answering phones.
Murray describes himself as having a servant heart. The staff at his firm know they have been on the receiving end of his caring approach. Long before the shortened work week became a common practice associated with the pandemic, he established a four-day work week for his staff.“That’s 52 Fridays off every year!” he says. The result has been far greater production since offering the shortened work week. He is proud to recognize his staff, which includes Funding Coordinator Tammy Brandt, who oversees transfers of property and insurance matters. Office Manager Lindsey Isaacs (or, as Murray calls her, “Chief of Lots of Things”) coordinates drafting documents, and Client Services Coordinator Victoria Roman manages after-death matters, including court probate and estate matters, which covers a broad range of scenarios - not just elder law. Last but not least is Mara Holehan, their high school intern in charge of scanning and
Murray has practiced law for 34 years and says the greatest satisfaction in his practice is serving the families of his community. And he knows something about community. His family has been a part of the Winamac community for nearly 100 years. Other than living in the mountains of Colorado for a brief time, he has called Winamac home all his life. He and his wife, Joan, both farm kids and high school sweethearts, raised their four children in Winamac, and they are active members of St. Peter’s Catholic Church. He has served on the parish finance council, as an usher and eucharist minister, and as a Confraternity of Christian Doctrine teacher for over 18 years. “My life decisions and family all revolve around my faith,” he says. An initiative at the Pulaski County Public Library in Winamac is another area where Murray lends his generosity. The Memory Care Backpack program provides tools to

address memory loss and trigger improved memory. He is also a Junior Achievement volunteer, reads to students in the classroom, has coached youth soccer and basketball, been a 4-H supporter, and supports Boy Scout Troop 229, the same troop he was a member of as a young boy. He has been a guest speaker at countless organizations and events, and welcomes the opportunity to address and educate a variety of audiences. Whether your estate planning needs are simple or complex, Murray’s door is open, and like he has been doing for more than 30 years, he will offer you his thoughtful expertise to make sure your most important matters are well-managed. When Owner Tim Eaton was living in Chicago in 2015 and read an article about the top 10 things every small town needs to be successful, he saw that one of them was a craft brewery.

Fast-forward four years and 155 miles southeast, and Eaton opened the doors to Science Project Brewing Company in Logansport. The brewery would become Eaton’s way of bringing people together. He recalls that in the early days, “the craft brewery was more of a club, and people talk to each other. At a regular bar or pub, you’re not going to ask the person next to you
about the light beer they’re drinking. But at a craft brewery, you’re going to have a conversation with others about the brews they chose, and a craft brewery is a destination that brings people to town.” He was welcomed by the other Logansport business owners, and the support blossomed into a unique atmosphere of helping one another for the greater good of the town - a collaborative
spirit that still exists today. As a place where people come to gather, Science Project is as simple as it is complex in the ways it creates a sense of community. In its simplicity, Science Project has an open, airy atmosphere with a variety of spaces for people to gather. Whether it’s for a signature craft beer and a bite to eat with a friend, or a table full of family members celebrating

a special occasion, Science Project has you covered. The layers of hospitality at the brewery weave a textured fabric that brings warmth and comfort to every visit. At the heart of this clever craft beer destination are thoughtfully made brews by Brewer Josh Goins, with titles that pay homage to scientific milestones and marvels. Brennan’s Torpedo pays homage to Louis Brennan who invented the steerable torpedo off the coast of Ireland. Tharsis Rise refers to a topographical feature on the planet Mars. On any given day, sitting at the bar will offer the opportunity for Eaton to explain the story behind a brew’s name. All craft beers are made in-house, with one exception being a brewing collaboration with a craft brewing company in Fort Wayne. Each craft beer ages approximately one month before it’s ready to be served. If the menu of craft beers seems daunting, not to worry. Tastings are served in (what else?) laboratory beakers. Unique brews include titles that celebrate local Logansport landmarks. Grab the Brass Ring is not only the most popular beer, but it also spotlights the iconic town carousel. The 1838 brew is named for the year the town of Logansport was founded. Where Two Rivers Meet is a geographical Logansport reference, and Double Felix is a whimsical nod to the Logansport High School mascot, the oldest high school mascot in the state of Indiana.
Not only made in America, Science Project craft beers are made right here in Indiana. But it is not just about the lagers and ales at Science Project, which also offers a variety of bourbons and wine. The whole family can enjoy the visit. Shelves of board games and an oversized wood tower game welcome guests at the front door. Beyond the dining room is an outdoor seating area with heat lamps and a Mountain Adventure tent for cold weather culinary adventure. Even the bathrooms get in on the fun. One is decorated with a space theme and another with a dinosaur theme, complete with creatures like a painted green gecko scaling the door. The full menu is family friendly as well, with a variety of pizzas that carry on the science theme. There are names like the Von Humboldt, which refers to renown explorer Alexander von Humboldt, a pioneer in the South American peaks. But don’t let the typical menu offerings of salad and pizza fool you. The ingredients are anything but expected. The Rocket Salad combines peppery arugula with quinoa, chickpeas and tomatoes, finished with a light lemon vinaigrette. The von Frisch pizza, named for the notable zoologist who conducted groundbreaking studies on communication among bees, adds an element of surprise to a traditional pepperoni, with honey and balsamic

glaze drizzled across the finished pie. A powerful side note to the menu includes two examples of community on a larger scale. The crisp yet tender pizza dough recipe was perfected by a former U.S. Marine who was discharged after being injured, and is now forever part of the story of Science Project. One of the 13 who perished in the recent evacuation from Afghanistan is the older brother of a current Science Project staff member. Beyond the brewery’s daily menu, there are weekly, annual and custom events that take place at Science Project. There is karaoke and live music every weekend, the details for which can be found on the brewery’s social media accounts. Regional tasting events, private parties and other events fill the calendar at the brewery. Events in 2024 include the Taste of Cass County, Squeal on the Eel Festival, and Horney Creek Beer and Wine Festival. Other events include stout night, featuring nearly a dozen uniquely titled and flavored dark beers. Be sure to mark your calendars for the third Thursday of every month

because it involves a trip back home of sorts for Eaton, the former Chicago resident, with Chicago pizza and hot dogs. On those nights the pizza is made with a different dough and cooking process from the daily pizza, so the experience is uniquely Chicago. Community is not just a word to Eaton. He has made Logansport his home with
his wife and two sons. Science Project Brewing Company is involved in a number of ways throughout Logansport, including sponsoring the scuba club, Special Olympics and high school activities. When you’re in the area, tune in to local radio station 102.3 The River to hear more about Science Project. Wherever you call home, it’s worth a road trip to visit the brewery, and remember to bring
the kids so they can have fun and learn a few things about science. Science Project Brewing Company is located at 611 North Street in Logansport. For more info, call 574-992-8457 or go to scienceprojectbrewing.com. You can also reach out via social media by messaging them on Facebook or Instagram.

THE PLOT THICKENS
CLOVERLEAF OUTDOORS HAS BECOME MICHIANA’S PREMIER PURVEYOR OF FOOD PLOT SEED AND MORE Writer / Matt Keating Photographer / Kari Lipscomb
Joas Lehman, co-owner of Cloverleaf Outdoors, says the popular business got started after he helped a friend.
enjoyed talking to customers and working with them. We now offer one of the largest food-plot seed selections in Michiana.”
“I was helping him out with food-plot seed, and it got me thinking about selling seed,” Leman says. “It was also my passion for hunting that inspired me. I thought it was something I could do well. It was also something I would enjoy doing for a living. I started working in my garage and I started the business out slowly. I learned as much as I could. Taking the time to learn about the different seeds and products paid off.”
In 2019 Lehman teamed up with Michael Hochstetler’s family to make the business even bigger.
By 2012 Lehman and his family eventually created Cloverleaf Outdoors. They sold food-plot seeds out of their garage. “Right away, I enjoyed what we were doing and I wanted the business to grow,” Lehman says. “I found out what foodplot seed works the best for an individual and I expanded the business. I also really
“Michael Hochstetler became the coowner of Cloverleaf Outdoors,” Lehman says. “In 2020 we moved the whole business to White Pigeon, Michigan. We have had more visibility at our location because we are right on U.S. 12. It was a great move that paid off.” Lehman says they offer a wide variety of outdoor products that cater to what customers are looking for. “We find out what is going to work for each individual,” he says. “We find what their goals are. Our top-tier products are made for having a great outdoor
experience. There are so many different varieties of food-plot seeds that it can be overwhelming. We find out what works best for the customer. We take the time and listen to what they want. One customer’s property is going to be different from another’s land, and there are different ways to come up with a solution that will work best for them.” Cloverleaf Outdoors offers many different fall blends, spring blends and customized mixes. “There are 15 seed types here for plot and habitat cover, lawns, pastures and other different uses,” Lehman says. “We

We offer so many seeds that our customers told us they have been able to greatly improve their outdoor experience.” Lehman notes that customers can also rent out seeders to plant their seeds. “We also offer different trees, including fruit trees, acorn trees and chestnut trees,” Lehman says. “They have been very popular. We also have blue spruces, Arkansas Black apple trees and Eastern Red cedars, Green Giant arborvitaes and October Glory maples.” Lehman adds that the herbicides at Cloverleaf Outdoors are also of high quality. “We have Arrest Max, Clethodim 2E, Plot

Our products and supplies are also made to use all year long. The hunting blinds also have a solid framework. We have received a lot of positive feedback on them.”

Lehman adds that Cloverleaf Outdoors also offers hunting blind installation. “Customers can come to our store or call us to find out what hunting blind will work best for them,” Lehman says. “We have different options. After customers decide which hunting blind works best for them, we schedule a good time to come out and install the hunting blind. We will deliver the blind and install it.” Lehman notes that the best way to cultivate a food plot is to have the right implements. “Wildlife farming equipment is really important,” he says. “We have seed spreaders, tillers and other implements that can be bought or rented. We also offer stock trail cameras, deer feeders, tree stands, and a variety of hunting and fishing supplies. We have crossbows. We have great ice fishing supplies for the winter months. SEMIRETIRED PRO FREESTYLE MOTOCROSS RIDER OPENS SHADE OF GREY INK & GALLERY Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided
Mark Merrix, the sole owner of Shade of Grey Ink & Gallery, loves and appreciates art in all different forms. He says it continually inspires him in his work. Merrix, also known as Weetle, is a self-taught, multidisciplinary artist and semiretired professional freestyle motocross rider. “I opened Shade of Grey just over two years ago with the intention of providing fine art in all forms,” he says. “This includes realism tattoos, airbrushing, murals, paintings, hand-painted helmets and other custom works of art. I’ve always loved working for myself. I started my art career in my teens over 20 years ago, creating hand-inked custom sweatshirts, shoes, handbags, jeans, T-shirts, etcetera, called Weetle Wear.” Weetle Wear quickly gained a strong following. “Weetle Wear was the lead way for me to get into tattooing,” Merrix says. “I was offered several apprenticeships by respected tattoo artists over the years after seeing my work in Weetle Wear.” Merrix says he has been having a great time. “Having lived my dream as a professional freestyle motocross rider, performing in over two countries and 36 states, I was ready for a change,” he says. “I was ready for a new challenge in a new medium. Finally, it was tattooing.” Merrix notes that his apprenticeships helped him tremendously. “I was very ambitious during my apprenticeship and obtained my permit fairly quick,” he says. “I knew I wanted my own private studio to have full control. I like knowing it’s properly cleaned as tattoos are minor surgery to the skin.” Merrix notes that cleanliness is extremely important at Shade of Grey. “Cleanliness is always at the top of what’s most important to me as a professional artist,” he says. “Having a positive and clean atmosphere also helps in the creative process.” Merrix is very focused on the quality of his work. February 2024 | TownePost.com
“I’m not open to the public, because I don’t like interruptions during my work and I didn’t want a tattoo ‘shop’ for that very reason,” he says. “I have no employees. It’s just me. I do all of it.” He likes it this way. “My consultations are by appointment only and each client gets my full, uninterrupted attention while in my gallery,” he says. Merrix notes that clients will love his work. “I’ve spent time preparing my gallery for the best experience possible and it’s still a work in progress,” he says. “I’m ready for

clients I can collaborate with, creating custom designs for my fine-art tattoos. I specialize in cover-ups as well as photorealism tattoos, but I’m also not opposed to any other tattooing styles. I’m looking for clients who can appreciate quality over quantity. I’m a firm believer in treating others as I would like to be treated. Being a highly passionate person, I run on high energy. I give everything I have every time. Energy needs to be reciprocated for a collaboration to work best.” Merrix has enjoyed letting more people know about his work. “Last weekend I attended my first soirée as Shade of Grey,

launched through the vision and drive of Laura Wagner, who set about building her business from home. Within a year the company had grown substantially, prompting a move to a new, permanent location in downtown Nappanee. Wagner hired Pebbles Unsicker for office administration, and they remained at the Nappanee location for the next 16 years, adding a dedicated sales force, Kelly Keeling, and an expanded customer base. In May of this year the business finally settled into a brand-new office in Leesburg.

A Survival Guide for Valentine’s Day Writer / Kayla Clemons, New Kitchen Store Photography Provided
Everyone enjoys Valentine’s Day, the day of love and affection, but it can be quite a challenge for couples who struggle to be vulnerable and are emotionally awkward. Fear not, for you are not alone in the sometimes-comedic journey through the mushy and emotional realm of this romantic holiday. Embrace the absurdity of the situation and employ these tactics to survive the day unscathed. 1. THE EMOTIONLESS GIFT EXCHANGE: Instead of conventional, sentimental gifts, opt for items that reflect your lack of emotional expression. An instruction manual like “How to Show Love 101” or a book titled “Emotions: A User’s Guide” will surely create laughter and break the ice. 2. THE STRATEGIC CARD SELECTION: Put your humor to good use and search for Valentine’s Day cards that poke fun at expressing emotions. Look for one-liners like “Roses

are red, violets are blue, I hate poetry…but I kinda like you.” 3. THE COMPETITIVE LOVE GAME: Buy cookie cutters in the shape of Cupid, a heart, or other themed shapes, and plan an evening of baking cookies and decorating them to see who can create the most clichéd cookies. Create a menu featuring nontraditional flavors like cinnamon, cayenne, and ginger while incorporating romantic flavors such as chocolate and strawberry. 4. THE VULNERABILITY SHIELD: If expressing emotions is still a struggle, create a fun code word or gesture to symbolize vulnerability (no, you can’t hide under a blanket). Whenever one of you musters up the courage to be affectionate or say something sweet, give the other person a playful signal, like wearing a foam finger or going cross-eyed to acknowledge the monumental moment. 5. JUST EMBRACE LOVE, AND SURPRISE YOUR LOVED ONE WITH A CANDLELIT DINNER AND ROMANTIC PLACE SETTING. This will surely set a new tone and start romanticizing the idea that you can be awkward and loving all in one. The key to surviving Valentine’s Day is to create memories and to love with all your heart. New Kitchen Store is located at 1100 Roosevelt Road in Walkerton. The occupational health team focuses on being stewards of time and money for the patients and companies in the community. Oftentimes when an employee gets injured on the job, the injury is not severe enough for an emergency room visit. This is often because it takes up valuable time for the nurses and doctors, the wait time is typically extensive, and the expenses are typically two to three times the cost of
Some additional benefits of choosing Woodlawn’s clinic include time and money savings for employers and their employees. However, if the team at the clinic determines that the injury is serious enough, Woodlawn’s emergency room is on the same campus as the clinic. This offers peace of mind to the patient, as they are able to quickly access the emergency room and get assistance from a team member.

Many patients choose to use the services at the occupational health clinic by scheduling an appointment. The nurse practitioner and medical assistant are housed in the clinic and are happy to serve the scheduled patient. On the other hand, when it comes to serving businesses in the community, Woodlawn team members can travel to the client’s workplace. For businesses that choose to have a team onsite, they can be confident that Woodlawn will tailor the services to their type of industry. Woodlawn is proud to work with a variety of industries and Occupational Safety and Health Administration. When they travel to a business, they are able to provide employee wellness benefits to their staff without requiring the patient to take time off of work to travel to the clinic. Some of the on-site services include hearing and lung-function testing, respirator fittings, as well as classes for cardiopulmonary resuscitation, automated external defibrillator, and first aid. They also provide wellness fairs, biometrics and vaccines. Woodlawn has recently received many requests for pre-employment physicals and drug screens. “This is exciting news as local businesses fill open positions and people in the community are returning to work,” Bowser says. “Both are necessary for growth in Fulton County.” On a personal level, the team at Woodlawn finds joy in bringing their unique services to the community, especially as members of a rural hospital. They aim to keep their decisions, care and funds right in the community so they are able to provide the best patient care to family, friends and neighbors.

HUNGRY HOOSIER HISTORY INDIANA RESTAURANT AND DINING FIRSTS Writer / Jeff Kenney Photography Provided
The Feast of Saint Valentine (better known to us nowadays as Valentine’s Day) approaches, and in addition to the inevitable purchases of cards, candy and flowers for that special someone, the other nearubiquitous means of marking the occasion is a (hopefully) romantic dinner, often shared by the couple at an eatery that’s a bit more fitting to the holiday than the drive-through of the nearest fast-food joint though for those with busy lives and a handful of kids, the latter may have to do in a pinch.
So while it’s safe to say that romance (whether on February 14 or any day of the year) has been around as long as human beings, this month we’ll take a brief look at something a bit more contemporary, but nonetheless boasting an interesting history of its own: historic eateries of Indiana. The very oldest eateries offering food and refuge to the public are no doubt lost to history and were almost certainly log cabin homes (or even Native American wigwams), opened up to accommodate the first non-Native travelers entering what is today Indiana via critical waterways like the Ohio or Wabash rivers or Lake Michigan. Most of these are lost to history, or might be referenced as footnotes in local or regional histories, but what is understandably better documented are claimants to the title of “oldest restaurant in Indiana,” by which is actually meant “oldest continuous restaurants in Indiana.” And while compiling such a list ought to be easy enough, the devil, as they say, is in the details, as any internet search on the subject will reveal. What is meant by “oldest restaurant” gets muddied by questions of whether the establishment exists in the same building, or under the same name. Is it a restaurant per se, or a tavern/inn? What if it’s a notso-ancient restaurant existing in the oldest building to house such an establishment? For purposes of this article, then, we’ll content ourselves with referencing what appear to be the most valid and interesting contenders for the title, and the reader may sort out the nuances. And regardless of how one parses out the details, many of us might be rather amazed at just how old some restaurants, including some in the Lakes Magazine area, actually are.

However, the restaurant that might arguably take the prize simply from date of establishment alone is almost as far away from the local area as one can get and still remain in Indiana. This makes sense if one realizes that most of the earliest forays into today’s Hoosier state began as folks from the east coast made their way west via the Ohio River, which of course forms the southern border between today’s Indiana and Kentucky. Thus, much of the oldest of nearly everything is in some geographic proximity to that waterway. Such is the case of the Log Inn, built in 1825 by Henry Haub as a noonday stage-coach stop and trading post, and located about a dozen miles north of Evansville, in Warrenton, Indiana. Consider that, in 1825, Indiana
had only been a state for nine years and - as a reference point for local readers in northern Indiana - the Potawatomi would still reside in this area for another 13 years. So the Log Inn dates back a bit further than the local burger joint! The Log Inn’s greatest claim to fame was an 1844 visit by Abraham Lincoln during the future president’s campaign in support of Henry Clay, but it also was ostensibly used as a stop on the Underground Railroad, was a busy stop on the old Dixie Highway that ran between Florida and Chicago, and it once boasted a dance hall above the tavern and store. Arguably the Log Inn fits into the aforementioned category of complexity regarding its pedigree as “oldest restaurant,” as the entity was converted into strictly a restaurant in 1947, though undoubtedly food has been served there since its inception, so its “earliest” status seems justified. And besides being historic, the Log Inn remains popular, especially for its fried chicken, and was featured in the Food Network’s “Best of Viewer’s Choice” program.
Nearly as old is the Broadway Tavern and Hotel in Madison, Indiana, which dates to 1834. One notable event in the Broadway’s past took place in April of 1861, when a traveling theater troupe stopped to perform at the Madison Theater. One member, a young actor named John Wilkes Booth, was slashed across the face by his angry fellow actor and girlfriend. The sheriff duly summoned, the young woman was arrested and soon thereafter the troupe left town. Booth, of course, would gain infamy as the assassin of President Lincoln just four years later (that story, in fact, made it to the famous radio show “The Rest of the Story,” narrated by the legendary Paul Harvey). Along similar lines to other “oldest” status complexities, the Broadway is said to qualify not necessarily as the oldest restaurant per se, but the oldest restaurant and hotel in the Hoosier state. Just one year newer than the Broadway - that is, dating to 1835

- and much closer to home is the Knickerbocker Saloon in West Lafayette, which claims the title of Indiana’s oldest bar. As long as there are people in a given locale, there’s bound to be a tavern, and in 1835 the Gault House Tavern, located inside the Lahr Luxury Hotel, became the first site of legal drinking in Hoosier territory (the first liquor license issued in the state was issued to the tavern and is still displayed on its wall). The establishment’s name was changed to the Cherry Wood Bar in the 1850s and the Knickerbocker Saloon in 1874, by which time the hotel had closed. The walnut bar that was installed in 1891 remains today. The word is that President Grant, Mark Twain, Al Capone and Neil Armstrong all patronized the Knickerbocker and, returning to the theme of President Lincoln’s assassination, the train carrying his body across the country is said to have stopped there for public viewing in front of the Knickerbocker. It’s worth noting that the bar did have to close for a time after a fire, which may seem rather irrelevant but will factor into our story later. Another early Hoosier eatery (perhaps the oldest in northern Indiana)
proximate to the local readership area is the Nine Mile Restaurant, located on U.S. Highway 27 in Fort Wayne. One of the earliest forays of people of European descent into northern Indiana was to a fort eventually named for legendary General “Mad” Anthony Wayne, and among the very old trails through the area was the notable Wayne Trace (Anthony Wayne’s army had marched through it after leaving Fort Wayne in 1794). Lesser known was the Piqua Road, surveyed in 1830 and doubtless following an ancient Native American trail, which would become today’s U.S. Highway 27. It was a well-worn pioneer track into the Fort Wayne area, and in 1837 John Karn opened a tavern at the site of today’s Nine Mile Restaurant. It was rebuilt in 1850 in Greek Revival style and renamed Nine Mile House due to its location exactly nine miles from the Allen County Courthouse. It became a significant gathering place in that part of the county. Though a series of renovations took place in the ensuing years, the restaurant’s original roofline is still visible, and a down-home menu approach prevails. If the Knickerbocker Saloon in West Lafayette holds the “oldest bar” title in Indiana, the establishment known today as the Slippery Noodle Inn lays claim to being the oldest continually operating bar in Indiana, and it occupies the oldest commercial building in

Indianapolis. Today a well-known blues bar, the Slippery Noodle was established in 1850 as the Tremont House, though it went through a plethora of names (including Germania House, as it was an early entity serving Indianapolis’s burgeoning German community). Like the Log Inn, the Slippery Noodle is said to have served as a stop on the Underground Railroad, and ostensibly produced beer in its basement during Prohibition. With its present-day tin ceiling dating to 1890, the bar was also rumored to be a brothel until 1953. The Noodle boasts several unusual attributes, from claims that it’s haunted to slugs in its basement walls from the infamous Dillinger and Brady gangs, to celebrity visitors like Harrison Ford, Jimmy Fallon, Peyton Manning, Billy Joel, Robert De Niro and Dan Aykroyd.
E X Any article on historic Hoosier eateries would be incomplete without TER I O R of the storied (if the pun can be pardoned) Story Inn, a mention L AT by Dr. George Story. The tiny community of Story, built inF1851 WO IS the Story Inn, though the Great Depression Indiana, essentially RK
almost ended its existence, as it became a ghost town for some years before Rick Hofstetter purchased the entire town in the 1990s. The former logging town today has converted the various small-business buildings of its history into bed-and-breakfast-style cottages. The whole scenario may also make Story one of Indiana’s smallest (if not THE smallest) towns, with less than five full-time residents! The Story Inn has become a destination, especially for visitors to beautiful Brown County. While fast food, again, may not seem the ideal fare for a romantic Valentine’s dinner, it seems a missed opportunity in an article like this one not to mention some fascinating historical facts about fast food and Indiana, starting with the unusually named Triple XXX Family Restaurant in West Lafayette. The Triple XXX joins the nearby Knickerbocker in the “first” list, but in this case it’s credited as the Hoosier state’s first drive-in restaurant. And while it isn’t old enough to have been serving food to horsedrawn buggies or traveling pioneer parties, its start date of 1929 marks it as quite early for a drive-in establishment. Named for the Triple XXX root beer brand, a number of similarly named drive-ins operated around the country through the midcentury, but West Lafayette’s is the only one still in operation, offering not only

the requisite root beer, but also classic Americana fare of the burger and fries variety. While not dating back as far, it might surprise many Hoosiers to realize that one homegrown fast-food chain was, for a time, the chief rival to the mighty McDonald’s powerhouse. The first Burger Chef restaurant was founded in Indianapolis in 1954 and had expanded, at its peak in 1973, to more than 1,000 restaurants nationwide (at the time, McDonald’s had around 1,600). Burger Chef, in fact, pioneered the offer of kids’ meals prior to McDonald’s doing so (Burger Chef even unsuccessfully sued the larger chain for stealing their idea), as well as the Works Bar, which allowed diners to choose their own fixings for their meals. A failed (and costly) attempt to expand internationally in the 1970s didn’t help the chain, which by 1982 was purchased by Hardee’s owners General Foods, with many Burger Chefs converting to Hardee’s. A few retained the Burger Chef name for a brief time before the entire chain was shut down.
Two huge fast-food franchises also have lesser-known Indiana connections. Perhaps ironically, Kentucky Fried Chicken was actually founded by Hoosier-born Colonel Harland Sanders, who hailed from the southern Indiana community of Henryville. Harland resided in Indiana towns including New Albany, Greenwood and Columbus, before he moved to Kentucky and launched a restaurant advertising “finger-lickin’ good” fried chicken. Of course by the 1950s the restaurant had expanded into a chain and Sanders sold it in the 1960s, though he stayed on as a spokesman for years after. Wendy’s founder Dave Thomas launched his first restaurant in Columbus, Ohio, but an important moment in his future eatery life is said to have occurred in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Like the aforementioned Sanders (with whom Thomas actually collaborated on the former’s KFC restaurant while Thomas lived in Fort Wayne), Thomas had a turbulent childhood, living in multiple states prior to finding himself living in Fort Wayne in his teens in the 1940s and working at the Hobby House restaurant there. The story goes that Thomas’s love of Hobby House’s chili and soft-serve “frosty” ice cream inspired two staple menu items at the Wendy’s chain he went on to found in 1969. And so, whether it’s sharing a fine meal with that special someone in an eatery dating back to pioneer days, or just bringing home Frostys to the family as a Valentine’s Day treat, there’s plenty of Hoosier restaurant heritage to feast on.

LEGENDARY BAITS
Aaron Hochstetler 260-336-8089 3992 N. 675 W. | Shipshewana, IN 46565
ALL-STAR CAST LEGENDARY BAITS IS SUCCESSFULLY TACKLING THE FISHING EQUIPMENT INDUSTRY Writer & Photographer / Ali Schneider
In Shipshewana, you will find a unique and locally owned company specializing in providing fishermen with high-quality bait and tackle. Legendary Baits was founded by Arron Hochstetler when he was only 20 years old. Not only does Hochstetler have a passion for fishing, but he also saw it as a great opportunity. Hochstetler struggled with drug addiction and knew he needed to change the direction of his life. He decided to use his creative skills and entrepreneurial knowledge to begin creating unique tackles right from his home. Hochstetler believes this was a saving grace that helped him stay busy during his struggles to stay clean. Although he began doing it as a hobby, he quickly realized there was a demand in the area for unique styles of tackle. As his skill set grew, so did his reputation in the area for providing one-of-a-kind tackles. This motivated Hochstetler to make his pastime more than just a leisure activity.

Soon, Legendary Baits would become his full time job. In his first year of official business, Hochstetler attended a trade show where he could show off his product, interact with other people in the fishing industry, spread his knowledge of fishing, as well as learn from customers and businesses in the industry. Once he saw the potential of creating his own poured tackle, he got right to work to further perfect his business model. When it comes to actually making the tackle, Hochstetler describes it as a hands-on, detailed process. The product itself begins by looking similar to milk. From there, he pours the solution into a 340-degree aluminum mold where it turns over and begins to gel. The aluminum molds are sourced from LureCraft, which is one of the top providers of molds in the fishing industry. The type of tackle that Hochstetler can create is nearly limitless and can be tailored to the type of fish a customer is trying to catch. He explains that the most popular fish his customers try to catch include pan fish, bass and walleye. Along with creating different shapes and sizes of tackle, he is able to customize and modify the colors. This is important, especially in Indiana where the weather is always changing. Hochstetler says different seasons and types of weather require different colors of tackle. Another factor that he considers is the body of water, whether it be a river, lake, pond or ocean. He also takes into account whether the water is
shallow or deep. Hochstetler begins his process by getting to know the customer first and answering any questions they may have. He explains that when the sun is out, the tackle reflects more underwater than on cloudy days. The sun makes it ideal to use brighter colors of tackle. On the flip side, cloudy days make it best to use darker colors such as green, black, blue and tan. He is able to add sparkles to the tackle as well if the customer desires. Aside from creating custom tackles, Legendary Baits offers multiple additional services. One of the most popular services is creating fishing rods. Hochstetler is able to make, customize and repair rods for ice fishing, along with other types of regular rods. The general public is welcome to bring in their own rod for repair, or come in empty handed and he will gladly make a custom rod. He is able to add marbling mixed with epoxy to create a

high-quality, beautiful rod. He also specializes in line spooling, which helps protect the line from getting tangled. Although Hochstetler is talented in his craft, he still believes that his purpose is greater than his business. He is not afraid to share his story of struggling in his early 20s. He explains that if his story helps even one person, it is worth it to be open and honest. He credits his family, friends and loyal customers with supporting him along the way.
