Writer / Lois PhotographerTomaszewski/JubileeEdgell America has had a love affair with automobiles for more than a century. People remember fondly their first car. In Winamac, Jim Dobson Ford has fueled that passion for 50 years. The dealership opened on May 26, 1972. Owner Jim Dobson was in sales at Charlie Roberts Chevrolet in Rensselaer. He decided to start out on his own and purchased the local Sunoco gas station which included a used car lot. Jim Dobson Ford opened its doors at 214 N. Monticello Street in Winamac before moving to its present location at 806 N. Plymouth Road in “Over1974.the past half-century, times weren’t always easy, but Jim Dobson’s strong Christian faith got him through the tough years,” recalls his son and current owner Steve Dobson. “The Jim Dobson Ford motto - Treating customers like family since 1972 - has guided the family and our devoted employees. Our loyal customers

“Our loyal customers have brought us where we are today,” Dobson says. “We have customers who started with us when the dealership opened in 1972. We are a family business and have been honored to serve the vehicle needs of our customers’ children and Dobsongrandchildren.”hasreturned that loyalty to the Winamac community by supporting high school athletics and academics, the local 4-H program, local food pantries and other community causes. Travis and Heathers are at Don Dobson Ford. But it’s not only the family that has left its mark on the business. Dobson says the dealership’s customers are critical to the dealership’s success, whether new ones walking into the dealership for the first time or those who have previously bought or sold there.

“We are proud to call Pulaski County home, and we serve those customers and surrounding counties including Strake, Jasper, Cass, Fulton and White,” Dobson says. That quality of service, dependability and reliability that comes through from the sales department is also reflected in the service “Ourdepartment.service department staff is trained and experienced and uses Ford’s high service standards to deliver excellent service,” Dobson adds. After decades in the business, Dobson has seen changes. From Ford model stalwarts that include the F-150, Explorer, Ranger and more recent models the Focus and Edge, have come new innovations such as the hybrids that are less dependent on gas and environmentally friendly. Automatic brake systems, collision sensors, electric vehicles, camera systems, and smart technology has impacted the market. Vintage Scoops The Standard Antiques, Ice Cream & Baked Goods is a Local Hot Spot Writer / Lois Tomaszewski Photographer / Jubilee Edgell Jeff & Jayne Fuller - Owners

Housed in a building that has been in Jayne’s family for two generations, The Standard opened in February 2018. Jeff, who retired in 2017 from a career selling race car springs, had always wanted to open an ice cream shop and that decadeslong yearning came true.

It is only offered when someone calls ahead and those who make it through the challenge are featured on The Standard’s

Although he can’t say for sure why an ice cream shop sounded like the perfect post-retirement plan, both he and Jayne are happy that the historic building has become a gathering spot for locals, families and other visitors. From a coffee group that comes in every day and sits at the same table, to the lunch crowd that comes in for the daily special, or the occasional visit from the Red Hat Ladies, The Standard is part of life in Bourbon.

At Christmas, there is a big Christmas stocking to draw for, something that Jayne remembers from her youth, and photo ops with a 6’ Easter Bunny during that holiday. When fall rolls around, the shop is decorated for the season and pumpkin spice ice cream is added to the Commemoratingcooler. birthdays with a party is also possible, the Fullers say. “We wanted to create a fun, family atmosphere,” Jayne says. “We wanted to be a Addingdestination.”aHotWheels race track for an event once a year was one way the Fullers used to draw customers from beyond the Bourbon city limits. The couple knew that their loyal following in Bourbon was important, but to succeed they needed people from outside the area to leave the US highway and drive to Main Street.

ourbon, Indiana may not yet be known as a destination for family fun, but that is changing as word of The Standard Antiques and Ice Cream Shop gets around. Owners Jeff and Jayne Fuller are happy to see their vision for their business come to life.

Another is the “The Standard Challenge,” an ice cream eating challenge that was recently won by a man from Wisconsin. The challenge tasks participants to eat 10 scoops of different ice cream flavors, with five different toppings, a banana, whipped cream and a cherry. The ice cream must be eaten in an hour and kept down for 10 minutes after the participant finishes eating.

Jayne says she always liked antiques and realized that ice cream and antiques do go well together. It adds to the nostalgia and creates a way for multi-generations to bond when checking out the merchandise

Jayne says people do hear about the challenge and many have tried. This unique food-centered contest is helping to promote the business as a destination, she says. While the atmosphere is a nod back to the ice cream parlors folks remember from their own small towns, the Fullers took steps to ensure that they are serving their customers the best possible product. The Standard serves Hershey’s Ice Cream. They are considered on of the top five sellers of Hershey’s Ice Cream in the region, Jayne says.

The Standard has also been named the best ice cream parlor in Marshall County two years in a row – in 2021 and this year. Although ice cream is on the signage, The Standard also offers baked goods prepared by a local vendor, who happens to be the Fullers’ daughter-in-law, Cindy. Jeff prepares the lunch-time daily specials. These vary daily and include entrees like baked spaghetti and meatballs, chicken and noodles, and Sloppy Joes. Lunch orders can be phoned in ahead of dining in or take out. The other half of The Standard’s space is occupied by antique vendors’ booths.

Like many businesses, the Fullers worried about how the pandemic would affect their business. Jayne said she wanted to make sure that there was still some normalcy to life in Bourbon for the community, such as having the Easter Bunny deliver curbside service during the Easter season or decorating the front windows with seasonal decorations. But it was the community that played an important role in helping the business thrive during the pandemic. People would pay-it-forward, passing on kindness to other customers as well as to the employees and owners.

“We were honored that the community thought of us and kept us open,” Jeff and Jayne say. Jayne grew up in Bourbon. Jeff grew up

Jeff worked on the building for months to turn the empty shell into a functioning space. He built a partial wall to divide the ice cream shop from the antiques and built the counters and the front window display areas. The Fullers added air conditioning to the building and upgraded electricity and plumbing. The work was rewarded with a place that attracts people to congregate, share friendly conversation and enjoy simple things like ice cream. “I enjoy watching people enjoy themselves,” Jeff says. “This is a happy place,” Jayne agrees. The Fullers follow a simple premise when it comes to customer service.

Not quite so long ago, when a unique business opportunity arose for the Jerry Miller family, they took the bait, in more ways than one. And now, some years after that first spark of inspiration was ignited, the Miller farmstead blends rather seamlessly into the rural Millersburg countryside, very near to the invisible boundary line that separates Elkhart and LaGrange counties. Traversing the narrow county roads, travelers will notice an abundance of roadside stands, where folks can find a veritable variety of homegrown wares, ranging from flowers to produce to maple syrup, along with a few treasures in between. But then, another sign springs into view to

The Stutzman family maintained ownership of Hoosier Bait for a large share of the 40-plus years of its existence. The Millers became the new operators and creators of the small yet mighty family enterprise back in 2014. Over the course of the past eight years, Hoosier Bait has become diversified in providing both wholesale and retail sales, also including mail order and delivery options for those within a particular radius.

The tiny shop through which each series of lures are created is not easily discernible on the Miller farm, but it is definitely where the manufacturing hub and heart of the company is located. One of the things that Jerry Miller is most lauded for is that he can work to replicate various types of worms and other tantalizing creatures that have been proven enticing to fish.

They can be reached via phone, where callers can leave a voice mail message, at 574-642-0177.

Bontrager, who has served as a distributor for nearly two decades, readily shares a few significant success stories, all of which demonstrate well how the products tailor themselves to adapt to every animal’s specific health concerns. He recalls one of his early introductions to Nutra-Glo, when he encountered a horse with badly structured and injured feet, which were compounded by the fact that the animal was terribly underweight. Bontrager noted that after a carefully introduced routine of nurturing and addressing the horses dietary deficits through the use of the products, the horse was in robust health over the course of several months.

Bontrager also remembers catching sight of a litter of puppies at a recent sale event in nearby Topeka. A pair of the newly born pups appeared weak and sickly, branded as “runts” of the batch. Even while still in their fragile states, Bontrager said that he faithfully offered the Nutra-Glo formula once a day, administering it via syringe. Just three weeks later, there was a tremendous and notable measure of growth. Once again, the introduction of Nutra-Glo’s routine to the tiny dog’s schedule of meals helped transform him into a healthy, spirited young dog.

Nutra-Glo has taken on the responsibility of pledging the best achievable results to its growing base of customers. And there are many improvements that have been chronicled by those who have incorporated the products into the care and maintenance routines of their animals. Among the positive results witnessed includes weight gain, better digestion and heartier appetites, reproductive health, blood circulation and strengthened immune systems, and overall temperament.

So when they were led to coordinate the grand opening of Scooter’s Coffee this past April, they were more than prepared to demonstrate to their new customers that delivering crave worthy beverages, pastries and sandwiches can be done swiftly, with precision and topped off with a smile.

those who just want that coffeehouse experience, but don’t have the luxury of spare time. Until fairly recently, the Scooter’s Coffee franchise was not well known in the Indiana sector of the Midwest. But it has enjoyed a following elsewhere in the country over the course of nearly 25 years. Scooter’s Coffee was launched in 1998, a concept created by Don and Linda Eckles of Bellevue, Nebraska. From the outset, the couple was committed to abiding by four core values that are universally imperative to the highest customer service standards – integrity, love, humility and courage. Those ideals are what employees and managers strive for with every guest experience. And those very ideals are what drew the couple into their leadership roles. Both were trained in the Scooter’s Coffee franchise program, yet they were not initially aware of the plans to open a shop in Nappanee. That is, until they were approached about a management opportunity there, and subsequently asked if they would consider overseeing the new business.

With the approach of fall, Scooter’s Coffee will be introducing some new seasonal options, all crafted to bring out the flavors of autumn. Watch for the debut of a pumpkin loaf, and other pumpkin spice infused baked goods. Cake pops are also being unveiled.

Thus far, Eric and Ashley are overjoyed at the positive reception from their customers and the greater environs at large. “We have been happily surprised with the response from the community. They are very loyal and very supportive,” she says.

Eric and Ashley even managed to take part in a tour of the baking facility, where they learned how to create food items that can be efficiently prepared without sacrificing quality or taste.

Of course, Scooter’s Coffee has a wide array of beverages as well, including teas, smoothies, malted coffees, iced teas and fruit drinks, and coffee served hot or cold. The Carmelicious is a top seller for drinks, and there are some particularly interesting flavors featured on the daily menu, like Red Bull Infusions, fruit-based Quenchers, iced lattes and much more. Folks can also purchase coffee beans for some of the most well loved coffee favorites, which are roasted at the company’s headquarters back in Omaha, Nebraska.

When asked what the most popular food choice has been among the Wa-Nee patrons, both had a ready answer, and not a surprising one, given the history of the community. It’s the Maple Waffle Sandwich, which is a sausage, egg, and cheese combination sandwiched between two waffles, baked with a hint of sweetness.

The Muirs own 40 acres of land that have been in David’s family for generations, dating back to 1852. By 1898 the lush farmlands began to bear fruit, which led to the evolution of Judson Fruit Farm. It was there that people came to discover some of the best produce in the area, including pears, cherries, peaches, apples, strawberries and grapes. In particular, the strawberry nursery at Judson Fruit Farm was among the most plentiful in the area. Reaching back to that earliest era, a great deal of the produce raised on the family farm was often transported in the most efficient way possible for the time - via railway. So it makes sense that David was seemingly born to mind the mission. He says he has been in the apple business all his life, and even now, all these years since the humble origins of Judson Fruit Farm, the apple is still a sought-after feature on the farm.

On a gently rolling swath of land just beyond the southern outskirts of Bristol, the couple has created a bucolic oasis of sorts, a place where they have crafted and created a collection of highly prized and greatly esteemed artisanal wines. This peaceful yet picturesque setting has served as a historic foundation across many chapters of a story nearly 200 years in the making.

The spark of inspiration was lit when the family was traveling out of state for a wedding. While they were away, they stopped to visit a small winery that offered specialty wines, produced in a small shop in the rear of the building. six different varieties of grapes are grown including two new ones added in recent months. The locally grown varieties, which are known as cold-hardy grapes, include Marquette and Frontenac Gris, along with Petite Pearl, Vignole and Traminette. The latter is a hybrid grape and has been given a distinction as Indiana’s signature grape. The owners also purchase grapes and juices that are not able to be harvested on Hoosier soil, which allows them to offer such fine wines as Merlot, Riesling, and Cabernet Franc. Several other variations of fruit wine can also be found at Fruit Hills including a unique, blended apple wine infused with cherry juice. What adds to the prestige of the wines created at Fruit Hills is the fact that they are sold regionally, which makes them highly sought after among both residents and travelers. During the vibrant tourist season, many visitors will make a trek through Elkhart County while searching for noteworthy attractions such as the Quilt Gardens. Whether the winery is a planned destination or a surprise stop along a country thoroughfare, guests come away enthralled by the products, the ambience, the friendly candor and more. One of the additions that the Muir family has integrated in recent years is the spacious patio, where folks can unwind with a favorite wine, take in the scenery and enjoy a slower pace. Writer / Jeff Kenney Photography Provided One of the most recognizable facets nationally of Culver Academies and, in a broader sense, northern Indiana, is the horsemanship program, best known simply as Culver’s Black Horse Troop - though there’s much more to the program, which celebrates 125 years since its founding this year, than that specific entity.  Horsemanship at Culver Academies indeed owes its origins to the Black Horse Troop, originally a unit of the Cleveland Cavalry that wowed the nation in March of 1897 when it escorted President McKinley down Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C., as part of that year’s inaugural festivities (in those days, inaugural parades were held in March rather than the January time frame of Amongtoday). those impressed by the pageantry of the troop was a young Virginia Military Institute graduate who had been hired just a few months earlier by Culver Military Academy Founder Henry Harrison Culver to serve as the commandant of cadets at the fledgling school, which had opened its doors less than three years prior in 1894. Leigh Gignilliat would later become superintendent of the school in 1911, a brigadier general in World War I, and a figure of national prominence for his role in the Preparedness Movement of the early 20th century, which helped give birth to the ROTC among other effects.

Perhaps more than any other individual, Gignilliat’s vision and methodology helped put Culver Military Academy on the map internationally, placing its cadets in headlines and newsreels, its name into two Hollywood film titles (“Tom Brown of Culver” in 1932 and “The Spirit of Culver” in 1939), and its graduates among the most

ON HORSEBACK AT CULVER

PROUD TRADITION ON THE REGIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL STAGE FOR 125 YEARS

By 1898 an impressive red-brick riding hall graced the Culver campus, matching the design by renowned St. Louis architect Albert Knell of the other campus buildings. Cadets in the troop were trained not only in general equitation, but also jumping and rough riding, hearkening back to the hallowed tradition of cavalry in warfare and making for an even more impressive spectacle in newspaper photos, films, postcards and in-person revues.

Through the following decades, members of the Black Horse Troop and its honor organization, the Lancer Platoon, appeared at a wide array of regional and nationallevel events, escorting a host of dignitaries including President Hoover, World War I Supreme Allied Commander Marshall

By 1906 an accomplished horseman in the form of Spanish-American war veteran and cavalryman Colonel Robert Rossow joined the Culver staff as director of its horsemanship program. One of his first suggestions, met with enthusiastic approval by Gignilliat, was the formation of a summer cavalry program to complement the recently (1902) launched Summer Naval School. This began, in 1907, a longstanding and cherished program in its own right, today known as the Summer School of ByHorsemanship. 1908aneventthat would become a beloved annual tradition began within the summer cavalry program - the troop hike. Initially known as the 100-mile hike, the event took summer cavalry cadets “on the trail” on horseback for miles away from Culver, often journeying through surrounding towns and tent camping along the way. Today the tradition continues, though not with quite the same scope of Perhapsdistance. its most visible manifestation began for the Black Horse Troop in 1913, when former Indiana Governor Thomas Marshall invited the entire Culver corps of cadets to escort him down Pennsylvania Avenue during the inauguration of President Woodrow Wilson, under whom Marshall served as vice president. Culver cadets made an impressive showing at that inaugural and its follow-up in 1917, with the troop in particular appearing in headlines, media photos and film clips.

One of Gignilliat’s first endeavors was to recommend to the Culver family the purchase of the mounts of the Black Horse Troop, shortly after the inaugural parade in the spring of 1897. The first 16 horses were soon on campus, and Gignilliat lost no time, in the coming months and few years, in putting them in front of regional audiences. Culver’s Black Horse Troop escorted the governor of Indiana and members of the Grand Army of the Republic, and took part in the World’s Fair in St. Louis (where it served as personal escort to legendary Admiral of the Navy George Dewey) and the Jamestown Exposition in 1907, to name but a few early appearances of note.

Perhaps as testament to the stature of the troop, two popular juvenile novels were published in the 1950s - “Black Horse of Culver” by Helen Orr Watson, and “Tex Rains, Culver Trooper” by Robert Rossow - in addition to numerous recordings and sheet music compositions paying tribute to the troop (including a march composed by legendary bandleader John Philip Sousa).

The 1950s saw efforts by Culver students to revive the inaugural tradition. These finally bore fruit when, in 1957, the troop participated in President Dwight Eisenhower’s second inaugural, beginning a consistent run of inaugural appearances ever since, with only the 1993 parade as an exception.

In the meantime, a new (and the current) riding hall replaced the 1898 structure. Completed in 1916, Culver’s riding hall was hailed as the largest indoor equestrian center in the U.S., with its massive arena home to polo matches and a variety of riding exhibitions and events. Various additions have graced what is today known as the Vaughn Equestrian Center including, in 2009, a large-scale renovation of the entire facility including the current state-of-the-art stables, which can house some 100 horses.

From the first female students at Culver Military Academy starting in 1957, horsemanship opportunities had been available to young women at the school, even if membership in the Black Horse Troop proper - as a living unit in the military school, which is male only - wasn’t possible. This had only increased by 1965 with the start of the Summer School for Girls, and into the 1970s when equestrian hikes, jumping and polo became available for girls.  In 1978 a girls hunt club evolved into the CGA Equestriennes, the first honor organization for young women at Culver Academies, as of 1980. The Equestriennes can boast of a rich history in their own right, sometimes at events alongside members of the Black Horse Troop or Lancer Platoon, and sometimes in their own unique appearances around the Thecountry. Equestriennes were invited for the first time to join their troop counterparts in Washington, D.C., for the 1985 Reagan inaugural, though that parade was canceled due to inclement weather. Thus the 1989 inaugural parade was the first for the Equestriennes, who (with the exception of the aforementioned 1993 parade) have joined the troop at every inaugural since.  They have appeared in events surrounding the Indianapolis 500, the Kentucky Derby, the Fort Worth Stock Show, and the renowned World Equestrian Games (sometimes alongside the troop and sometimes on their own), among many Todayothers. the rich tradition of horsemanship continues at Culver Academies under the direction of recently installed Director of Horsemanship Captain Sean “Skip” Nicholls, who served since 1991 with the British Armed Forces Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment in London, England, and began his Culver tenure last year.  And so, a century and a quarter later, students at the school continue to learn lessons instilled by four-legged and human instructors, and to enthrall audiences locally, regionally and internationally as they carry on a proud area tradition.

Many of the beers that originated in the local brewery have been presented in various public venues, such as beer festivals, and the awards and accolades continue to stream in. Ruhe152 owner Scott Tuttle reflected on the journey to bring the distillery to its premiere in 2021, a situation that came with some unexpected surprises. “We were able to fully open up our distillery

in 2021, after having to wait 18 months from opening (Ruhe152), due to an archaic Indiana regarding breweries which also happen to be distilleries,” Tuttle says. “That has been exciting. We have our own vodka, run, spiced rum, gin, white whiskey and our traditional whiskey, which has been in barrels for almost a year now, with another year or so to go. All house drinks feature our in-house made spirits, unless specific brands of liquor are requested, and they have all been accepted by our patrons. In fact, some have commented about liking ours better than their previous favorites. All of our spirits are available by the bottle at AsRuhe152.”Ruhe152 begins transitioning their menu to one with an autumn flair, Lucchese and Michael sat down with general manager Bobbi Gongwer to talk about another greatly anticipated development that lies just around the corner, so to speak. They are hopeful that by summer of 2023, the kitchen area will be enlarged to accommodate the addition of pub favorites and banquet preparations, with the latter enabling the Ruhe staff to launch a catering feature. They envision a “brewpub” space, a more relaxed pace, and amenities such as large screen televisions for sporting events.

The new space will be transformed into a casual hometown bar setting, where folks can spend time unwinding with friends over shared appetizers and sipping the renowned Ruhe brew. Buying a car can be a task that proves frustrating for many. There are plenty of misconceptions about this necessary task. One local dealership is striving to change the way car buying is done. Winamac Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram hopes to take that frustration away by taking a one-onone approach by offering a personalized and friendly experience at a full-service Generaldealership.Manager Darwin Knebel explains the Winamac Chrysler approach.

“Jeep owners love the outdoors and are adventurous,” Knebel says. “Chrysler customers appreciate a more luxurious ride. Dodge customers like a performance vehicle. Ram owners are Ram tough and need a truck that keeps up.” Sometimes, customers are looking for a vehicle that can accommodate where they are in life. Finding out what those needs are is part of the Winamac Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram experience. For example, the type of vehicle a young car buyer needs or wants may be different than what a family needs. This could be fitting in a growing family, getting better gas mileage, or other reasons.

Dodge Jeep Ram officially opened two years later, the dealership is poised to serve local drivers and customers from Logansport, South Bend, Knox, Rochester and Rensselaer and points beyond.

“Our salespersons Tiffany Freeman and Justin Hunt blend experience with fresh vision and energy,” Knebel says. As with many automotive makes, many of the dealership’s customers have brand loyalty and like to stick with a vehicle make they know and trust. Often, the vehicle they choose fits into their lifestyle or fulfills a specific need. That is why an experienced sales team is an asset.
