QUICK CUP CELEBRATES 15 YEARS IN BUSINESS Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided

Kathie Mason was going to school to earn her degree in 2012 when she began working at Quick Cup in Tipton. Natalie and Dale Meyers had opened the drive-up coffee shop in 2007 and Mason loved working there. Years later when the Meyers announced that they were selling the shop, Mason and her boyfriend, Rick Shanks, decided to purchase it. “We had always wanted something like this so it was a great opportunity,” says Mason, who has been pleased with how the shop

has grown since they bought it in November of 2013. “When we first started, one employee could run it for a couple hours at a time. Now, one employee can’t be left there for five seconds. There’s too much traffic coming through.” Not that she’s complaining. She’s grateful for the tremendous community support and the way locals not only frequent the shop, but also rally around her in tough times. There was perhaps no better example of that loyalty than during the COVID-19 crisis, which did a number on many small businesses. Mason’s biggest hurdle during the pandemic was getting her hands on supplies namely cups. “Obviously our business relies on cups, so there for a while I was in a panic driving to different states in search of cups,” Mason says. Once word got out in Tipton that Quick Cup had this need, the community responded. A woman who runs a restaurant in Cicero offered to get some cups from her distributor. The manager of the tobacco store next door said she’d ask her area manger to order some cups. A bowling alley proprietor also offered to help. “I had people reaching out from all over,” Mason says. “I literally broke down and cried because these people were such a blessing. I

have cold chills just thinking about it.” Even now, maintaining an adequate cup supply can be difficult due to supply-chain issues. “I have to admit, I’m a cup hoarder now,” Mason says with a chuckle. “We own a pole barn down the road from us, so if I’m at Sam’s Club and they get a couple cases of cups in, I’ll buy them and store them in the pole barn because you just never know.” About a year and a half ago, they revamped the menu and began selling quick-serve food. In the mornings, hot sellers are biscuits and gravy, made with their homemade gravy. “We sell out of it every day,” Mason says, adding that the sausage, egg and pancake breakfast sandwich is also very popular. Customers also love the soft pretzels, hot ham and cheese sandwiches, and barbecue sandwiches. Outside temperature does not seem to affect customers’ taste buds. “Some days we sell hot drinks all day long, and other days blended drinks,” Mason says. Frappés are a big seller, even in the dead of winter. Their popular hot drinks are caramel macchiatos and white chocolate mochas. “You name it, we have the flavor to make it,” says Mason, who is thrilled to have her nephew Blake join her team as store manager. “He graduated from IU with a business degree and has been a godsend. He’s got so many great ideas like monthly drink specials and weekly muffin specials. Plus, he does all the marketing and social media posts, the scheduling, and bringing in new products like holiday drinks.” Mason is grateful for her entire staff for their skill and dedication. “These girls move,” she says. “They are on it. Sometimes I tell them, ‘I hope you wore your running shoes today because it’s busy.’ ”

“They work the windows,” she says. “They make the drinks. They are the face of Quick Cup.” Though it’s a drive-up coffee shop, they do have a walk-up window for warmer months. They also set out picnic tables with umbrellas in mild weather. Customers appreciate not just the drive-up aspect, but also the fact that they have two windows rather than one - one on the north and one on the south side of the building. This allows traffic to flow nicely. Anytime an individual, church, school or community organization approaches Mason about the possibility of doing a fundraiser, Mason agrees because she so adores the people of Tipton. “Being able to help people is what I love most about my life,” Mason says. “I have a heart for giving back. I feel that’s what I’m supposed to do.” Just last month, Quick Cup celebrated their 15-year anniversary. They made it a month-long celebration by offering giveaways throughout the month of April. “We did some birthday drink specials, a birthday cake frappé, and we ran a special on our cupcakes,” Mason says. “We were excited because 15 years is a big deal.” Quick Cup is located at 302 East Jefferson Street in Tipton. MORE THAN A KIDS’ CLUB THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF TIPTON COUNTY IS EXPANDING ITS REACH Writer / Megan Arszman Photography Provided

“We’re not a day care, but we provide programming that supports three outlying areas that include academic success, a healthy lifestyle, and a growth in character and citizenship,” says Amanda Mendenhall, executive director for the BGCT. This is Mendenhall’s 13th year with the organization and her fourth as executive director. Since the start of her time with the group, she has seen a growth in not only the community of Tipton, but also the whole county, thus increasing the need for the club to grow.

When a building is more than just a place for refuge from the weather and the people are more than just a replacement for boredom, you know you’ve found a special place. In Tipton County, that place is the Boys & Girls Club of Tipton County (BGCT).

What started more than 30 years ago as an after-school and out-of-school program for the youth of Tipton has grown to be a place of inspiration, education and respite for children from kindergarten through high school across the county.

“Since I started I have wanted us to try to be out and about more in the community, so we can grow our presence within the community and be more of a partner,” she says. This ideal worked well for the club until the pandemic hit. The club partnered with both county school corporations to pack and provide free lunches to all the students in the county throughout the week. “It was a

Tipton, where transportation or cost might prohibit them from taking advantage of the services provided in Tipton. Spring break saw the dawn of more community-based programming for the club, with staff going to Kempton, Sharpsville and Windfall for free outreach programs that involved science, fun, and a

free lunch provided to anyone in those communities, club members or not. The new program and others provided by the club are funded by organizations such as the Tipton County Foundation and family foundations across the county. “I have presented our community-based outreach program to our supporters by saying, ‘If you’ll increase funding, I’ll increase what we’re doing and where we’re going,’” Mendenhall says.

Also new this year is an expansion of services offered to county youth beyond fourth grade. Recently the club completed expanding and remodeling a portion of the facility on Jefferson, for 3,200 square feet dedicated to teenagers. The teen center houses a music room with instruments such as guitars and pianos (provided by groups like Legends Music Academy), an art room, a recreation room with video games and a bumper pool table, a snack

area, and a quiet study area. A dedicated teen coordinator is also new to the facility, and he’s been spending time with local schools looking for new ways to meet the needs of youth and teens. A new program titled Adulting 101 is for high school students who might not be members of the BGCT, but want to learn about tasks like opening a bank account, putting together a resume and filling out a job application. “There’s always something new on the horizon for the club,” Mendenhall says. “We’re a great facility but we understand that not everyone is going to come to us, so we have to figure out how to go out to them and build the community.” To learn more about the Boys & Girls Club of Tipton County, visit the main facility at 341 West Jefferson Street, Suite B in Tipton, or visit bgctipton.org.

Travis Phifer, co-owner of Phifer’s Fitness, says locals looking for a great workout now have an ideal fitness location. Phifer, who co-owns the fitness center with his wife Leslee, adds that there was a lot of excitement before they opened their Elwood location on April 1, 2022. “We hope to bring an incredible gym experience to the Elwood community,” he says. “We look to build upon the current gym here and add equipment that will benefit all members. We will also add to our Elwood gym family the ability to have personal training and small-group

Another great opportunity for all members is the flexibility to train at both the new Elwood location and the Tipton gym. “All members at both locations will be able to take advantage of free classes in Tipton,” Phifer says. Phifer believes there is a secret to their success at the Tipton location. “We started out small and grew with our clientele,” Phifer says. “It is important to ensure you can offer the clients an excellent gym experience. WOLFIES GRILL COMING TO PENDLETON LOCAL RESTAURANT CHAIN TO OPEN NEW LOCATION IN MADISON COUNTY Writer / Seth Johnson Photography Provided

I

f you’ve lived in central Indiana throughout the past two decades, then you’re likely familiar with the local chain of Wolfies Grill restaurants.

Since establishing their first Noblesville restaurant off of Morse Lake back in 2004, owners Scott and Nyla Wolf have greatly expanded their brand, opening Wolfies Grill locations in Carmel, Fishers, Geist, Westfield and West Lafayette, in addition to their Italian House on Park restaurant concept in Westfield. Continuing with this growth, Nyla and Scott will open another Wolfies Grill in Pendleton, building a new, state-of-the-art restaurant where Downing’s Old Trail Restaurant once was. “I’d been going up to the Old Trail for years,” Scott Wolf says. “I was a big fan of their chicken. The mom and dad were getting older and she had some health problems. They knew we were in the business so they just reached out and said, ‘Would you be interested in taking this location over?’ I said, ‘I’d be very excited to.’ ” Tentatively slated to open this June, the Wolfies Grill in Pendleton will be in a brand-new, 5,000-square-foot building complete with a family dining room, bar and beer garden. “We were going to take the building, add onto it and do some things to really enhance it,” Wolf says. “But it’d been three different businesses before and had been really cut up. We’re actually going to doze down the building, start from scratch and build a brand-new building. This one will have family dining, it’ll have a large bar, and it’ll have a beer garden off the bar that’ll have cornhole and stuff out there to do.” Like their other locations, the Wolfies Grill in Pendleton will offer up a delicious menu of pub-style foods including burgers, wings and more. The owners first started selling this type of food back in 2004 because it worked well for customers on Morse Lake. “We just worked on what we thought would work as far as a place to go and watch sports on the water, and get some food that would TownePost.com / MAY 2022 / TIPTON MAGAZINE / 17

travel easy on the boats but also for dine-in, which ended up being the ribs, burgers and wings,” Wolf says of the first Wolfies Grill location in Noblesville. “That’s where we came up with the menu and started driving that end of it.” When it comes to the ingredients used at Wolfies Grill, Wolf says the team has always tried to keep things local when they can. “We try to source out as much as possible to local suppliers and vendors,” he says. For example, Wolfies Grill gets the beef for their burgers from a farm in Muncie. On the bar side, Wolfies Grill offers a selection of local and regional beers on draft, as well as a specialty cocktail menu. “Our cocktails are made from scratch,” Wolf says. “They’re just high-quality, good-sized

cocktails. It’s a 12-ounce cocktail. It’s not these real little ones. With what’s going on today with supply chains and the economy, a lot of people have really cut back on the size of their cocktails. We haven’t touched any of that. We’ve tried to stay true to what we have.” While reflecting on what he’s proud of across all of his restaurant locations, Wolf is quick to pinpoint his staff and the way they’re treated.

“We never furloughed anybody,” he says. “When it hit we said, ‘If you were a painter or carpenter in your previous life, we’re going to work on our stores, fix them up and get them better than they were.’ We kept people employed the whole time, just helping us paint, clean and get to things we weren’t able to get to with open hours. We actually came out of COVID stronger than we went into it.” As he gets ready to open the newest Wolfies Grill location in Pendleton, Wolf looks forward to being a part of yet another central Indiana community.

“It’s a great location right off the interstate,” he says. “That area is really starting to grow. They’ve added the new sports complex “In the summertime we’ll have up to 500 up there. You’ve got Tractor Supply’s employees that we’re responsible for, and we headquarters up there.
