The Tipton County 4-H Fair has continually adapted throughout the years but has always kept one element throughout the years: It features Tipton’s finest kids, and the great adults they work with. James Woolf, former Purdue UniversityTipton County Extension educator says the positive changes over the years have always kept the program and fair going in the right direction.

“Things continually evolve at the Tipton County 4-H Fair,” Woolf says. “It’s a wonderful program. I was the County Extension Educator from 1981 to 2010, and I’ve seen a lot of changes over the years. I retired from Purdue Tipton County Extension, where I supported the Fair Board, Fairgrounds, and the County 4-H Fair for 30 years.” Woolf says the fair goes back a long way. “The county fairs started in the 1800s, but were much different,” Woolf says. “The farmers had granges back then, and they got together to talk about and focus on everything that was agricultural. They talked about how to have the best livestock, and how to make your farm better.”

Back then, farmers enjoyed getting together and receiving advice from each other.

“The first fair was in the 1800s, in the Tipton County Park,” Woolf says. “Our actual fairgrounds were developed in the early 1950s. Some land was set aside for the county fairgrounds. The County 4H Fair has its own events in the 1950s. The first 4-H building was a cattle barn built in the early to mid-1950s. Other buildings went up later to make the event bigger.” Woolf notes that the Tipton County 4-H Fair’s Education Center was built in 2007. “It is next to the first 4-H building, and the 2007 building was built to look just like the 1950s building,” he says. “I like the way things change over the years, but there are great things that stay the same. The torch is passed. There is always positive mentoring that goes on, where kids learn from the adults, and it goes the other way too. Adults learn things from the kids. The event changes, but the fair board continues to do a great job.” Woolf says that the fairs also become a magnet for economic development.

“People come into town for the fairs, and stay for lunch, shop, or go to the hardware store,” he says. “They come into Tipton and spend money, which is great for everyone. The fairs have always been wonderful for Tipton and will continue to be that way in the future.” Adam Crouch, who serves on the fair’s board, says people can expect all the same fun at this year’s fair.

“The fair is free, and will be July 13-17, 2021, and people can enjoy all of the great Concerts on the Grass,” Crouch says. “We will have The Flying Toasters, some other great music, and the 2021 Miss Tipton County 4-H Fair Queen Pageant, which is always a great event.” A local favorite, Legends Music Academy, will also be on the main stage with student performances. Crouch noted that there are always a lot of fun family thing to do. “There are so many positive agricultural things to do and see,” he says. “The fair and the fairgrounds themselves are just a great community place. The fairgrounds have really good camping rentals, places to have weddings, and small events. It’s a community minded facility, and people really look forward to the 4-H Fair every year.” Crouch’s vision for the future is to just keep moving forward and improving upon all of the great things that are already in place. “I think we have some great people in the community who have gone out of their way to make this event, and the grounds themselves, a place that people want to continue to go back to,” he says. The Tipton County 4-H Fair is set for July 13-17 at 1200 S. Main St., Tipton. For more information on call (765) 675-1177 or visit www.facebook.com/ TiptonCountyFairgrounds.

TIPTON ON TAP

FEATURES POURS FROM INDIANA CRAFT BREWERIES

Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided

Summer festival goers will likely want to mark the upcoming Tipton on Tap Craft Beer, Wine & Spirits Fest on their social calendars. The inaugural festival will take place from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 10 at the Tipton Town Square and surrounding streets. The event will feature unlimited pours from 20 Indiana craft breweries, distilleries and wineries, as well as live music, local food, local art, games and more. “The idea for how Tipton on Tap got started began when Mike Terry, City of Tipton public works manager, and Steve Niblick, City of Tipton and Tipton County Planning Office executive director, attended a couple of similar events around the state, and felt that Tipton would be a great location for this type of event,” says Steve Raber, community development director for the City of Tipton. “They learned that the events were put on by Indiana on Tap, and presented the idea of having an event here in Tipton to Mayor Tom Dolezal.” “A meeting was held with Justin Knepp

and Mark Lasbury from Indiana on Tap, Mayor Dolezal, Mike, Steve, and myself as community development director,” Raber continues. “We all agreed that this was something that we wanted for Tipton. Mayor Dolezal signed a three-year contract with Indiana on Tap to host the event.” The event was launched to get people to visit Tipton. “The mayor and I felt that this event would be a great way to showcase Tipton,” Raber says. “Craft breweries, wineries and distilleries have become very popular, especially with the younger adults. We wanted people to be able to sample these items, and have an enjoyable day here in Tipton. We also became aware of the strong response to these events around the state, but noticed a void in this part of the state, and thought Tipton was the city to fill that void by hosting an event.” Tipton on Tap is also a great way to feature local businesses. “This event also gives some of our local businesses, fraternal groups and nonprofits a chance to participate, and showcase what they have to offer,” Raber says. “From a city side, we have some available storefronts here that we hope to fill as we revitalize the TownePost.com / JULY 2021 / TIPTON MAGAZINE / 7

downtown area. We thought that this would be a good opportunity to find a new owner for a couple of these storefronts. We felt that this would be a great event to offer our area as we emerge from the COVID times.” Gates for the event will open for VIP entry at 3 p.m., with general admission beginning at 4 p.m. VIP tickets include an extra hour to enjoy the event, and shorter lines during the first hour to sample beverages. Both VIP and general admission tickets include unlimited pours from nearly 100 different beers, wines and spirits, along with access to the outdoor music and entertainment. Food will be available for purchase from multiple food partners. For more info including complete ticket details, visit indianaontap.com/event/ tipton-on-tap-craft-beer-wine-spirits-fest.

PEDDLERS MARKET CATERS TO MANY TASTES Writer / Julie Yates Photography / Provided

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Tipton’s annual multivendor outdoor market hosted by Memory Lane Antiques. There have been changes during its existence, but the event is always held the Friday and Saturday after the Fourth of July. Formerly called Peddlers on the Alley and now named Peddlers Market, it features antiques, repurposed goods, home décor and fashion items. For several years, the market set up in the alley behind storefronts. Although the concept to use the space as a bazaar-like setting added charm, the temperature got unbearably high. Organizer Susan DeVault — who, along with her husband Jack, owns Memory Lane Antiques — came up with a solution. “Because of the heat from the buildings, the alley was too hot. We went to the Board of

Works and asked them to close the street during the market,” DeVault says. “Now the vendors can set up out in front of the shops. The vendors are wonderful. There is a lot of talent in this area, and we try to keep it as local as possible. We have sellers coming from Anderson, Carmel, Cicero and, of course, Tipton.”

maiden name was McCoy,” DeVault says. “In the boxes was McCoy pottery in patterns she had collected. I liked the McCoy pottery because it wasn’t perfect, yet it was interesting. After owning a series of booths and shops, their building on North Main Street became available. The DeVaults took advantage of the opportunity and opened Memory Lane Antiques. They have enjoyed the 11 years they have been there. “Every day with our store is a blessing,” she says. “We just have a good time.

Magnificent Market HORTON’S FRENCH MARKET TURNS 13

Writer / Julie Yates Photography Provided

The annual Horton’s French Market is highly anticipated not only by the people of Tipton, but also by attendees who come from surrounding areas, including out of state. What began as an idea to bring people downtown during a slow season has grown larger each year. During the two days it will be held this year, on July 9 and 10, the French Market will host its largest number of vendors ever. “The concept for starting it 13 years ago was really simple,” says Karen Horton of Horton’s Home and Garden. “We wanted to create an event that would bring business to downtown Tipton.” For a few years, Horton’s Home and Garden was the only business that set up an outdoor marketplace. Gradually more vendors were added to the open-air, French-inspired courtyard. Once the event started growing,

other downtown Tipton establishments joined the inviting vignettes the store has become known for. in by having their own promotions such as setting up tables outside their storefronts. “The French Market is a wonderful time to meet up with friends and slow down The French Market is a juried event, which for a while,” Horton says. “One group of means vendors have to apply to participate. ladies who come from out of state always This ensures a varied mix of goods, with everything in the parking lot complementing are interested in the fresh flower bouquets. what is offered inside the store.
