TIPTON COUNTY PORK FESTIVAL IS BACK The Tipton County Pork Festival will make its triumphant return to downtown Tipton in 2021, running from September 9 to 11. Pork Festival started back in 1969 when a group of Tipton County women decided they wanted to showcase the local pork available in the area. “The ladies credited with organizing the first festival were Henrietta Larson, Nan Nash, Margaret Hinkle and Bobbie Kauffman,” Webster says. “They basically cooked some pork chops on the courthouse lawn and put on a festival to promote the product, and that’s pretty much how the festival was born. Over the years it’s evolved into what it is today.” While the festival has certainly grown over the years, the organizers have remained

committed to spotlighting local businesses and not-for-profits in the area. “The festival is all about giving back to the community,” Webster says. “It’s important that our not-for-profits are able to participate to show the community what they do. In giving back to the community, we try to buy our pork from within Tipton County, so we buy all of our food product from White’s Meat Market that helps the local economy.” The committee is excited for another way

they will be able to help give back to the community this year by offering a new attraction to festival goers. Helicopter rides will be available during the festival for $40 per person. The festival is hopeful to give part of the proceeds from this attraction back to the Tipton Baseball Board. Known for its always-popular pork chop tent, the Tipton County Pork Festival also

features a Pork Court that gives attendees a way to check out other pork vendors from the surrounding areas. Heading into this year’s event, Webster and her fellow committee members also wanted to offer families a special night to bring their kids to the festival.

“Thursday we’re doing a Family Fun Night where we ask our vendors if they’d be willing to participate in a $3 item or items, depending on what they want to do,” Webster says. “We offer that so families can come enjoy a night at the festival

while not breaking their budget. That’s also our bracelet night at the carnival rides. As well as, Royal Events is coming back this year, and they’re going to be offering their character meet-and-greets for free again.” In reflecting on what keeps the festival running smoothly, Webster emphasizes the importance of her volunteers each year. “Our volunteers are our everything really. If it weren’t for the volunteers, we have that come in shifts every day, we wouldn’t be able to run the festival as smoothly as we do.” She along with the committee also stresses how much community sponsors mean to the festival.

“Honestly, if it wasn’t for our sponsors, we wouldn’t be able to have a festival,” Webster says. “They are a very vital part of our organization and enable our festival to continue on each year.” While the Tipton County Pork Festival provides the community with a fun time, Webster says she and her fellow committee members realized the economic impact cancelling the festival last year had on the community. “When we sat down last year during COVID trying to figure out how we could safely have the festival, we crunched the numbers, and realized that in a threeday time frame, our festival puts about $80,000-plus back into the community alone,” Webster says. “Our community really relies on the fest more than people realize. We have so many businesses and not-for-profits that truly benefit from the Pork Festival.”

While the committee is excited for families to come and have a fun time at the fest this year, they are also very aware that the effect the Tipton County Pork Festival will have on the local community and its businesses as it returns in 2021. When the skilled staff of Heart and Soul Caring perceive the time has come for hospice care, they inform the family. Communication continues between both agencies until the end of life. “When we know an individual can qualify for hospice care, we let family know,” Ferguson says. “At that time, Medicare kicks in, a nurse is sent out, and scripts are written for equipment needed such as a hospital bed, air mattress and lifts. Senior Living Guide of their journey to the end of life,” Ferguson adds. “It means so much to the family, so we are very particular about who we hire. Our employees go through national background checks and random drug screening through IU Health. “Our employees care for each other as well,” Ferguson says. “It’s really like family. The staff are like sisters. They help and rally for each other. I could not run the business without the two ladies that help me in the office. Kayla Leyk is my administrative assistant and Emily McCollum is the scheduler. The minimum time a staff member is scheduled for is four hours. We maintain an on-call person seven days a week.” Clients are varied but staff communicate with each other to make sure all needs are met. An individual needing care might be a single, middle-aged person with a terminal diagnosis who is living in the home of an elderly parent. Or, it could be a senior needing respite care while other family members leave town for a Disney vacation. “We do anything the individual can no longer do such as laundry, cleaning and grocery shopping,” Ferguson says. “Likewise, we do tasks like bathing and dressing. We organize birthday parties if the family does not live close by. We are there to the end. “It takes the whole Heart and Soul family to do what we do. The communication we have with each other is unparalleled. We are there for our clients and their families.” Along with that, we are always looking to add to our Family of Caregivers, paying direct deposit weekly. needs, grocery store, hair salon/barber shop, bank, post office and any other basic living needs,” Kellerman says.

Cara Kellerman, executive director of Encore Lifestyle and Enrichment Center, 900 E. Jefferson St., Suite A, Tipton, Indiana, says the center is the best kept secret in the area.

The service also provide rides to people younger than 60 for a fee.

“We are a senior-focused organization that has existed in Tipton County since 1979 and has evolved into what you see today in the Encore Center,” Kellerman says. “This organization is very special to the actively aging community members, and their families, for the types of social engagement and independence it provides. Growing by leaps and bounds since 2015, the Encore Center is booming. We offer a daily activities program and transportation service for the demographic that we serve.” Kellerman says that the center’s transportation service is designed to help everyone wishing to use it. “The Encore Express transportation service is focused on serving those over 60 years old by donation,” Kellerman says. “Currently, the Encore Express service consists of two buses, both equipped with a lift to accommodate any passenger wishing to utilize the service.” The transportation service takes them to a wide variety of places. “Common destinations for those utilizing the service include medical appointments, physical therapy appointments, pharmacy

“Although the Encore Express service is focused on those over 60 years, it is not limited to that age group,” she says. “In fact, the Encore Express has recently added Medicaid transportation to the program. Residents of Tipton County that have a Medicaid health insurance plan now have access to transportation to medical appointments. Outside of this, any resident (younger than 60) of the county can utilize the transportation service for a low fee.” Encore also partners with the Area Five Agency, located in Logansport, who provide meals that are served at Encore. “The Encore Center has a fantastic collaboration with the Area Five Agency,” Kellerman says. “Area Five provides and serves a daily congregate meal service, including homebound meals, for Tipton County residents. The Encore Center simply provides a place for meals to be served. Any interested senior may reserve a meal and stop in for lunch at the Encore Center. Anyone younger than 60 may also enjoy a meal for a low fee. Area Five asks for at least a two-day advanced notice if you want to order a meal. The meals are delicious and I encourage anyone to give it a try.” Kellerman adds that Although the Encore Center provides the daily activities program for their members, the Area Five Agency also provides one large event each year.

Senior Living Guide “This year, the Senior Open 2021 will take place over a one-week period in the month of October,” Kellerman says. “We are currently accepting sign-ups for this exciting week of events. With the help of Area Five and Purdue Extension -Tipton County, we are offering a softball tournament, Euchre tournament, horseshoe tournament, a walk/run, bingo, pickle ball, golf, and more. The week will end with a delicious lunch for participants at the Tipton County 4-H auditorium building.”

SPECIAL PLACE

she says. “I want to give special thanks to the Tipton County Foundation, Tipton County, the City of Tipton, INDOT, local businesses and local donors for their continued support of the Encore Center. Last, but not least, the drivers and the administrative staff at the Encore Center are the best in the business. Thank you for a continued job well done.” The Encore Lifestyle & Enrichment Center is located at 900 E. Jefferson St, Suite A, in Tipton. For more information, call 765-675-4746 or visit them on Facebook.

Kellerman says she loves working at Encore. “The Encore Center holds a very special place in my heart,” she says. “An organization of this nature is the key to keeping aging people independent longer, as well as socially and mentally healthy for much longer in their lifetime. A small, nonprofit organization can make an enormous impact on a local community in terms of health care costs.” Kellerman has high hopes for the future. “It is my goal and my hope that Encore continues to network with other senior organizations around the state and beyond to continue offering valuable programs to the local community,”
