As our nation prepares to honor those who have donned the uniform in service to our country, Veterans Day stands as a solemn and proud occasion, a testament to the sacrifices made by the men and women who have defended our freedoms. One of those brave men is Mayor Tom Dolezal. Dolezal joined the U.S. Army Delayed

Entry Program in 1982 at the age of 17, and entered active duty on his 18th birthday in 1983. His basic and advanced armor (tanker) training was in Fort Knox, Kentucky, and he went on to serve for over three years in West Germany. He was stationed there at Wiesbaden for the first 12 months, with the balance of his time in Baumholder. 4 / TIPTON MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2023 / TownePost.com

During his service there, Dolezal had the chance to visit France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and East Berlin before the Berlin Wall came down. After returning to Purdue University for college in 1987, he joined the 209th Supply Unit, which is an Army Reserve unit in Lafayette. During that time, Dolezal

participated in two summer training missions in South Korea. In 1990 his unit was activated for service in Operation Desert Shield. After a brief training period at Fort Knox, his unit was sent to Saudi Arabia to serve in Operation Desert Storm, and he was was promoted to the rank of sergeant E-5.

Today, Dolezal’s best friend, with whom he served during Desert Storm, currently lives in Noblesville. “We have the opportunity to visit on a regular basis and I deeply value his friendship,” Dolezal says.

Dolezal grew up in northern Indiana and graduated from North Judson-San Pierre High School, where he was influenced by his father and uncles to join the service. Both his father and uncle served in the Army while another uncle served in the Air Force.

He has had the honor of serving Tipton as both a county commissioner and the current mayor. Dolezal has also worked with First Farmers Bank & Trust as a commercial loan officer and has been in community banking for 30 years.

Some of his favorite memories include having the responsibility of showing Congressman Jack Kemp how to fire an M60A3 tank during field training exercises in West Germany in 1985, and receiving recognition as the runner-up in 1986 tank gunnery training exercises, placing second

“I have a wonderful wife, Christi, who I met at Purdue, who was born and raised here in Tipton,” he says. “We have been married for 32 years and have four children.”

VETERAN SPOTLIGHT KEN STANLEY

Writer / Natalie Platt Photography Provided

In a world where courage and selflessness reign supreme, Veterans Day serves as a momentous occasion to recognize the heroes who have walked the path of duty. Their stories of sacrifice are woven into the fabric of our nation’s history. They’ve faced the challenges of war and returned with a profound sense of duty. For Ken Stanley, the path of duty lasted for a total of 32 years. He spent over three decades in the military serving in the Air Force and the Army. He joined the Air Force in 1977 after graduating high school in Phoenix, Arizona, then spent five years as an enlisted airman fire protection specialist.

He was stationed at Chanute Air Force Base in Illinois (now closed) and on a remote assignment in King Salmon, Alaska (now closed), and finished at Grissom Air Force Base before it was reclassified to a reserve base. Then Stanley left the Air Force and enrolled in Army ROTC at Purdue University, where he was commissioned as a military intelligence officer after graduation. He spent 15 years in the Army and Army National Guard, with stops at Fort Huachuca in Arizona, Fort Devens in Massachusetts, Fort Hood in Texas, and Bamburg, Germany. In 2001 he transferred back to the Air Force as a major working in personnel and logistics, and spent four years as an inspector general. He deployed twice to

the Middle East while working in logistics, and retired in December 2012 with the rank of lieutenant colonel. Stanley was influenced to join the service by his father, who was a retired Navy chief petty officer, and by his uncle, who served in Vietnam. His mother’s great-uncle was also an interpreter during World War II and spoke fluent German. One of Stanley’s standout memories while in Afghanistan came after he had been traveling throughout the country for a few days and returned to the base in complete exhaustion. “I actually slept through a mortar attack that took place way outside the perimeter of the base because I did not hear the alarms sounding,” Stanley says. “I was extremely blessed to have so many opportunities over my 30-plus years, such as attending the Joint Intelligence College in Washington, D.C.,
