ANCHORED IN HOPE OFFERS TRENDY HOME DECOR AND GIFTS Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Jason Graves

Owner Susie Hussong and five other local makers are the crafters and creators of the offerings for sale at Anchored in Hope Home Decor. Situated in the middle of downtown Tipton, the shop is the result of creativity Hussong didn’t realize she had. The store is open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. On other days Hussong is busy making items to resupply inventory.

“I actually taught in kindergarten and first grade in Elwood for 19 years,” Hussong says. “I really wanted a change. I didn’t consider myself very creative but I started dabbling around with ideas I found on Pinterest. I did some Facebook Lives and people started commenting and wanted what I made.” After a time, Hussong’s husband Andy found a space for rent that had been an office building. Someone else initially acquired it, but the deal fell through and the

“For Rent” sign went back up. Everything fell into place when the couple made the decision to open a brick-and-mortar site. Walls were knocked down, two front offices were removed and other renovations took place such as new flooring. The Hussongs’ two teenage sons also had a hand in the remodel. The youngest helped with some technology and installing a point-of-sale system. The elder son rolled up his sleeves and assisted with the rebuild.

When asked why she named the shop Anchored in Hope, Hussong says her faith played a major role.

SAME AGENTS * NEW NAME BETTER WAY TO SERVE YOU

“Both Andy and I are very strong in our faith,” she says. “We feel God had a hand in it. My sister-in-law Cheryl passed away three years ago in March, and Hebrews 6:19, ‘Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which entereth into that within the veil,’ was her life verse. She would have loved this store and had her hands right in the middle of everything.” Makers represented inside the shop include County 12 Mercantile, Custom Clayworks, Ellie Maid, Knits with Kate and Three Girls Candle Company. Items offered include chalk-painted jars for flower arrangements, stacks of wooden books with a message on the front, decor for tiered trays, candles and textiles. Framed signs run from $30 to $50 according to size, and popular macramé items include plant hangers starting at $15, to $200 for a large wall piece.

“We have some great items for Christmas presents,” Hussong says. “Country 12 Mercantile will make signs to order and we can customize several items by the town such as Tipton, Noblesville and Westfield among others. Coasters are $24 for a set of four. One has the town name, one has the zip code, one says ‘Home’ and the last has an image of the state of Indiana. There are pillows that can be made for whatever city you live in, and are great for someone who has moved away. They say phrases such as ‘Life is good in Tipton’ and ‘Home Sweet Home Tipton.’ They come in two sizes, 12”x18”

and 18”x18”.” The store is decorated for every season. Most of the items are handmade locally, and Hussong does stock a few other items she feels customers will enjoy. The pieces are an affordable way to decorate a home just by changing out a few accessories. “A good percentage of people we see are from out of town and have just come to shop,” Hussong says. “Tipton is in the process of being revitalized and I’m excited to be part of it.” Anchored in Hope Home Decor is located at 116 East Jefferson Street in Tipton. CLEAR SUCCESS

THE HOUSE OF GLASS HAS A RICH LOCAL HISTORY All the banks turned him down.

Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided

Joe Rice, owner of The House of Glass in Elwood, says he has thoroughly enjoyed working at his family business for as long as he can remember. Rice started working at the family glass factory when he was 12, and worked for his uncles (Paul, Joe, Ed, and Bob StClair). He says he and his skilled craftsmen have been creating designer glass art for more than 30 years. Rice operates the business, which was originally founded in Elwood in 1938 by his grandfather, John “Pop” St. Clair. Rice purchased The House of Glass in October 1987 after his uncle Bob passed away. “We purchased all the equipment, glass, tools and supplies, as well as the property, from the estate of my uncle Bob St. Clair,” Rice says. “I had projected a loss for the first year when I applied for a small-business loan from all the banks in Elwood, Indiana.”

“I assume it was because I expected a loss,” Rice says. “I approached the bank in Tipton that handled my uncle Bob’s account. The president of the bank never asked a question. He approved the loan. As it happened, we made a five-figure profit that very first year.”

Rice has kept the family tradition of the glass factory, formerly known as St. Clair Glass, while taking on new ideas and new technology.

“I have continued to produce many of the items my grandfather first developed, as well as those developed by my uncles,” Rice says. “The blessings have come from the many years of their tutoring, and suggestions from loyal customers to develop new and creative items that complement our traditional “I have never lost that wild-eyed child’s love for artwork.” creating something out of nothing,” Rice says. Rice notes that loyal customers have kept “Of course, the ‘nothing’ is 2,100-Fahrenheit the business going through the years. molten glass. To this very day I can’t wait to open the annealing oven, just to sneak a peek at what I made a couple days before. I estimate “We have been so blessed to share with three and four generations of loyal I have made as many as a quarter of a million customers, and we call them friends,” Rice pieces of glass in my lifetime.” says. “There are not many weeks that pass that someone doesn’t call or visit, to tell the In his opinion, Rice has never made the story of their first trip here or to St. Clair perfect piece. He uses annealing ovens, which are used to eliminate stresses caused in glassware during the art glass manufacturing process.

class some 30 to 40 years ago. It has been 10 to 15 years since the last school visited our plant. Sadly, after 34 years, many of our friends have stopped collecting and begun to downsize, as we are too.”

The greatest improvements for Rice have come in the form of better science and chemicals used in the making glass, as well as the introduction of more efficient electric glass furnaces and modern annealing ovens.

Rice has seen many transitions through the years.

“The very best change has been seeing my daughter Amanda graduate from RoseHulman Institute of Technology, as one of the first classes of female engineers from Rose,” he says. “After that, was her marriage to Harold, also a Rose-Hulman graduate, and their three beautiful, intelligent and fun-loving children. They have all made paperweights with old grandpa Joe.”

“It is not easy to describe the changes over the years,” Rice says. “Perhaps the most difficult part has been losing so many loved ones. All my aunts and uncles have passed away. I have lost several cousins, and the most difficult was the passing of Merrilee, my first wife.”

least-expected bonuses of his career is meeting so many wonderful, talented, and dedicated glass artists from all over the United States. “We have shared many ideas, suggestions and secrets, all with the express purpose of helping one another become better glass artists, but most importantly to become better mentors and friends,” he says. “A gift is made better when shared with others.” To find out more about The House of Glass, located at 7900 East State Road 28 in Elwood, call 765-552-6841 or visit thehouseofglassinc.com.

TAKE YOUR HOLIDAY COOKIE TRADITIONS TO THE NEXT LEVEL Writer & Photographer / Abigail Hake

What is it about the holidays that just screams cookies? Can you imagine the holidays without thinking about all the different cookies out there at the same time? They go hand in hand. There’s no holiday without them. By the time you have gone to holiday parties, visited family, participated in a cookie swap, or just decided to leave some out for Santa, you’ve made your fair share and have probably eaten quite a few too. Making holiday cookies each year is a great family tradition for lots of people. Many people put this on their holiday or winter bucket lists. One of the best parts of this tradition is that if you do it as a family, you can watch the kids grow into their roles more and more each year. Traditions don’t have to be complicated. Actually, it’s better if some traditions are simple so

they can easily be replicated year after year. There are so many cookies out there to choose from that baking together each year can be exactly the same or completely different. The good news is that holiday cookies don’t have to be fancy. The best part about baking around the holidays is that the cookies are homemade and baked with love. That said, for the cookies to turn out good enough to share with friends and family without embarrassment, you do need the right supplies and recipes. Our favorite cookies to make around the holidays are classic, decorated sugar cookies. These are the perfect cookies to make with the kiddos because they are fairly simple and, obviously, sweet. Did you know that sugar cookies have been around since the mid 1700s? They are believed to have been created by

German Protestant settlers in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, and were originally known as Nazareth cookies. We also like making chocolate chip cookies (which date back to 1938) and gingerbread cookies (which date back to Queen Elizabeth I during the 16th century), but it’s always fun to add in some new recipes. The holiday baking tradition continues this year as we will be in the kitchen taking on typical cutout sugar cookies, and trying some new ones like Santa’s trash cookies and holiday fudge. With so many easy sugar cookie recipes out there, here’s a different type of cookie recipe to try by yourself or with your loved ones. These Santa’s trash cookies have plenty of flavor to satisfy salty and sweet cravings. Can you really pass up cookies with potato chips in them?

SANTA’S TRASH COOKIES What you’ll need: • 14 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature • ½ cup granulated sugar • ½ cup brown sugar • 1 large egg • 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon baking soda (make sure it’s not expired) • ¼ teaspoon salt • ⅓ cup crushed potato chips • ⅓ cup crushed pretzels • ½ cup mini white chocolate Reese’s Cups • ½ cup mini chocolate Reese’s Cups • ⅓ cup milk or semi-sweet chocolate chips • ½ cup M&M’s (I used red, green and blue) • ⅓ cup white chocolate chips • ¼ cup sprinkles of choice • Sprinkles of flaky sea salt for tops of cookies

First, preheat your oven to 350 degrees and line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Next, in a medium bowl, whisk the flour, baking soda and salt together until they are combined, then set aside. With a mixer, cream the butter and sugars together in a large bowl until light and fluffy, usually about one to three minutes. Once the mixture turns pale yellow and has a light fluffy texture, it’s done. Make sure to not over-cream the mixture. Then, beat in an egg until it’s combined. Next, add in the dry ingredients with the wet until they are combined. It will be very thick. After that’s combined, add in the pretzels, potato chips, M&M’s, Reese’s Cups, chocolate chips and sprinkles, and mix together gently. Using a cookie scoop, scoop your dough balls onto your sheets with parchment paper and slightly press them down. Before putting into the oven, sprinkle lightly with sea salt. If you’d like, you can add additional pretzels, chips, candies and sprinkles to the tops of the cookies for a little extra pizzazz. If you prefer the cookies to be thicker, don’t press down as much. Bake until the edges are just starting to get golden, usually about seven to eight minutes.
