BETH WOELFERT OF SPARROW INSURANCE

As an independent medicare broker, Beth Woelfert of Sparrow Insurance helps people to determine what Medicare product is best for them by explaining the differences between Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans and Medicare Advantage plans.

Once a client chooses, Woelfert carefully guides them through specific carrier plans, so the client can determine which would most closely fit their needs. The Tipton-

based agency is licensed and certified with 13-plus carriers, which gives clients an abundance of plan choices.

Woelfert wants to inform her clients - and potential clients - that they can be eligible for Medicare for different reasons.

“The most obvious one is when you turn 65,” she says. “However, people who have received Social Security disability insurance for over 24 months are also eligible. For anyone with ALS, there is no waiting for

Medicare and they are eligible regardless of their age. Additionally, some people with end-stage renal disease may also be eligible.”

She also stresses that everyone should review benefits each year with their agent to learn about expected costs for the coming year.

“This coming year will be especially interesting with the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act,” Woelfert says. “It will impact many aspects of all types of plans.

There are still many unknowns even though we are only a couple months away from the annual election period.”

Knowing the correct deadlines, and not waiting until the last minute, is also extremely important.

“There are specific times when people can sign up for Medicare,” Woelfert says. “For those who are aging into Medicare, you have three months prior to your birth month, your actual birth month, and then three months after your birth month to sign up. I’ve seen it take months to get Part A and B in place, so I encourage all of my clients to reach out to Social Security three months before their birth month to set up their appointment.”

Applications can also be completed online. If you are already on Medicare and have either a Medicare Advantage plan or a

standalone prescription plan, October 15 through December 7 are important dates to remember; this is the time to meet with an agent, to compare and possibly switch plans.

“The questions I am most frequently asked from potential clients is if they have to get Medicare when they turn 65 if they’re still working,” Woelfert says. “The short answer is it depends. Every person’s solution is different. Some people may be able to defer Part B since they are still on a group plan, whereas others may need to get parts A, B and D in place to avoid lifelong penalties.”

Another question Woelfert often receives is why clients need a Part D plan if they’re not on any prescription medications. In 2006, Part D became mandatory under the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement and Modernization Act (also known as the Medicare Modernization Act). Because of this, all Medicare beneficiaries are required

to have creditable drug coverage.

“If you were to sign up for original Medicare without a Part D plan, then eventually need Part D, you would incur a lifetime penalty of 1% for every month you did not have creditable coverage,” Woelfert says.

Woelfert’s main focus as an agent is to help her clients through the confusion, from where to start to what they need to sign up for or defer. She is always happy to answer anyone’s questions.

For those who want to retire but aren’t sure how to figure out how much health insurance costs, Woelfert is ready to sit down and discuss options to help them feel more secure. There is no charge when working with her. Woelfert is paid from the insurance carrier you decide to go with.

“No more is added to your cost if you use an agent, and you don’t save money by not using an agent,” she says. “I am not in the business of ‘selling’ anything, but to act as an advisor and resource when people have questions, even after they are all signed up.”

Sparrow Insurance currently employs eight active agents spread throughout Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Kentucky. The agency is licensed to sell in nine additional states as well. In addition to Medicare, the agency can also help people get small group or individual health, dental and vision plans along with life insurance. Woelfert’s agency does not have a brick-and-mortar location, and typically meets with clients in their home or at a restaurant.

“I love Tipton,” she says. “I was born and raised here, and started my professional life as an elementary teacher at Tipton Elementary. I am convinced that there is no better place to have a small business than right here in Tipton.”

MID-AMERICA THRESHING AND ANTIQUE, INC. CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY

Tex Nunemacher, vice president of MidAmerica Threshing and Antique, Inc. in Tipton, said he is excited about the 50th anniversary of the organization’s event.

“A lot of people are really looking forward to our next Mid-America Threshing and Antique, Inc. show, which is going to be

held August 8 to 11 at the 4-H Fairgrounds, 1200 South Main Street in Tipton, Indiana,” Nunemacher said. “We are ready to celebrate how long this has been around.”

Mid-America Threshing & Antique, Inc. started in 1975 with 20 people meeting in Bunker Hill. These 20 people each donated

$20 to start the tractor club. On April 18, 1975, Mid-America Threshing & Antique, Inc. was officially incorporated. The very first show was held at the Tipton County Fairgrounds on August 8 through 10 in 1975. There was a lot of horse- and muledrawn equipment, steam engines, tractors and other equipment. There was a horse and mule pull, which was very popular. Today there are very few horses working in the demonstration area, a handful of steam engines, and a lot more tractors.

Mid-America Threshing & Antique, Inc. used to cut and bind wheat for the Pioneer Village at the Indiana State Fair. Today the organization still cuts wheat, but uses the wheat for demonstrations at the show.

“My family has been there from the beginning, watching the show progress into what it is today,” said Tiffany Garrison, board member. “My grandpa, Jim Ploughe, and uncle, Terry Ploughe, were both founding members. They were both board members for years, holding various positions. My parents, Tim and Jan Garrison, have held numerous positions, and now my dad and I are board members together. We are now onto the fifth generation on the show with my son, Preston. It is always great to see the ‘tractor show family,’ and just be at the show with people who have the same passion as you.”

The opening ceremonies for the event begin at 9 a.m. on August 8, but this is just the beginning for a weekend full of festivities.

“The event is an agricultural history of farming, and we get a lot of guests who say they really enjoy the program,” he said. “We have an antique farm machinery show that is very popular. We have machine demonstrations for threshing and wheat, shelling corn, and field demonstrations.”

Nunemacher said there will also be demonstrations of large steam engines, garden tractors and other equipment.

“Every year there is a specific focus on a featured brand, and this year that focus is on John Deere,” he said. “All tractors are welcome, but we are really featuring John Deere. Every year we raffle off a tractor. This year our tractor is a 1951 John Deere MT with a mounted plow. You can purchase one ticket for $10 or three tickets for $20. Next year we will be featuring Oliver tractors and equipment.”

Nunemacher said there are also demonstrations for picking corn and grinding corn. There will also be a parts booth with farm equipment.

“We will also have a working sawmill,” Nunemacher said. “You also can bring a tractor or a plow. There is space available for demonstrating tractors or plows.”

Nunemacher noted that PTO dynamometers will also be at the event.

“PTO dynamometers are built and designed for accurate PTO testing,” he said. “PTO, or ‘power takeoff,’ is a driveshaft used in agricultural places to provide power to a separate machine. You hook the PTO dyno to your shaft and get more friction for the water machinery you are working with.”

Nunemacher said the popular Mid-America Threshing & Antique, Inc. flea market will also be back.

“We will have different antiques and pieces of machinery at the flea market,” he said. “There will be vendors who will be selling a wide variety of items.”

Nunemacher said there will also be a toy show at the event.

“There will be all kinds of toys for sale,” he said. “For the first time, there will be a kids corner, with different kinds of crafts for the kids to make and take home. This will be located in the feature tent.”

Nunemacher said food vendors will also be selling delicious food items. “There will be hamburgers, pizza, tenderloins and ice

cream available for sale,” he said.

On Friday, August 9, there will be a muscletractor pull. This event will start at 7 p.m. There will be a $10 entry fee for the tractor pull.

On Saturday, August 10, there will be a spark show with stream engines and fireworks at dusk.

“The whole event over the weekend is really fun for the whole family,” Nunemacher said. “We are really promoting the 50th anniversary. It feels good to be able to celebrate this. There are a lot of things that don’t last that long. A lot of great people have put a lot of effort into keeping it lasting this long. It takes an army to raise a family, and people involved with Mid-America Threshing and Antique, Inc., have made this show last over the years.”

Everyone is invited to bring their John Deere tractors and equipment, or other makes of tractors and equipment.
