GEIST OFFICE SUITES EXPANDING TO MEET DEMAND What most people know as the RE/MAX building off of Fall Creek is not just RE/MAX Realty. The building hosts office suites for a variety of people, including the atGeist.com team. The offices used to be home to a medical center, but two and half years ago, Chris Schulhof bought the building and turned it into office suites after seeing a strong need for the idea.
Convenience is one of the best features for tenants since many live in the Fishers/Geist area. As of now, there are three suites open for future tenants, and Schulhof thinks that they will be leased quickly. For more information, visit GeistOfficeSuites.com or call 317-585-7653.
The demand was so strong that the office suites have been full since the opening of the building, and after having to turn so many people away, Schulhof decided to expand the building. He worked with Fishers Town Manager and Mayor Elect Scott Fadness to come up with a plan that would meet the demand and the town’s ordinances. While making the plans for the addition, Schulhof wanted to make sure that the building would look as if it was all built at once, while keeping the building as eco-friendly as possible. He also made sure that his suites were different than traditional office suites by including LED lighting throughout the building a flat screen TV in each suite. Tenants also have 24-hour access to the building, and conference rooms are available for use.

Maybe next time!
There’s a new spa in Carmel, but instead of soft music and facials in a private room, you will find hot and cold plunge baths, oxygen therapy and compression boots.
The compression boots are designed to increase blood flow and relieve muscles. The Tanners say they are also learning of some unexpected bonuses with the compression boots as one customer has reported a definite reduction in cellulite on her legs.
It’s the Recover Fast Spa, designed to help athletes and others recover quickly and effectively after a serious workout.
So whether you have just finished a marathon or have beefed up your fitness routine to where you need a little recharging, you might want to check out the Recover Fast Spa. You may not see soft, candlelit rooms with lemon-infused water by the door, but your muscles will know you did them a favor!
“Athletes especially are good at pushing their bodies to the limits,” says owner Matt Tanner who has been a competitive cyclist for 20 years and has learned a number of recovery techniques. “But it’s just as important to recover well, so they feel better and have fewer injuries,” he said. Tanner opened the spa earlier this year as a way to help athletes of all disciplines and fitness levels. Matt’s wife, Chris, offers diet and nutrition advice.
Customized investment portfolios that perform.
On the day I stopped by Recover Fast, I saw the hot soak/cold plunge room which helps reduces inflammation and increase blood flow. The sunlight sauna delivers rays of infrared light that penetrates human tissue to help detox, relieve pain, increase blood flow and even stimulate collagen and smooth skin tone for anti-aging benefits. The Hyperbaric oxygen therapy puts spa-goers in a long white bag-like device which slowly inflates and fills muscles with oxygen. “You can actually work harder and longer when your muscles are pumped with oxygen,” Tanner said. I decided to try the NormaTec Compression Full-length Boots. I slipped into a chair, my boots were zipped up and they turned on what feels like a pulsing sensation running up and down your legs for about 20 minutes.

I thought it felt great, but apparently I only had the pulses turned up to seven, and most turn it up to 10! CustomizedPortfolios_4.72x7.37.indd 1 atGeist.com2607 / NOVEMBER 2014 / GEIST COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / 15

At 9 a.m. on Tanksgiving morning before helping themselves to their Tanksgiving meal, 18,000 Hoosiers and their families will serve others frst by participating in the 12th annual Drumstick Dash.
DRUMSTICK DASH from 1,300 for the inaugural race to 18,000 runners and walkers last year. When Chief Development Ofcer Steve Kerr proposed the idea over 12 years ago to hold a race on Tanksgiving Day, he had no idea it would grow to be so popular. Te Drumstick Dash is the second largest in the state, second only to the 500 Festival Mini-Marathon.
Tis race, benefting Wheeler Mission, has grown into one of the top 10 events in the U.S. for Tanksgiving Day running events.
Te most important part of the Drumstick Dash is raising awareness of the services and support that Wheeler Mission provides. “Tanksgiving is the number one day of Tey have been serving the homeless in the year for races, with July 4th being the Indianapolis for 121 years. the remaining 20 percent comes from grants, corporate gifs and fundraising events such as the Drumstick Dash. With feeding on average 1,000 homeless men, women and children every day at the cost of $2.25 a meal, the seasonal spike is approaching. Te Drumstick Dash is welltimed as the need during the winter months increases dramatically. Crispin himself is a product of success of Wheeler Mission programs. Seeking help for his drug and alcohol addiction, Wheeler Mission helped him overcome his addiction. “Tere are many others like me who have benefted from our services,” said Crispin.

CIRCLE OF LIGHTS® A DOWNTOWN TRADITION
Writer / Tonja Talley
Magic and excitement will again permeate the air around Monument Circle, during one of Central Indiana’s most treasured holiday traditions, the Circle of Lights. Presented by Quality Connection and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) #481, the 52nd Circle of Lights will kick of the holiday season, starting at 6 p.m. Friday, November 28, with a free family-oriented celebration. From the Friday evening afer Tanksgiving until early January, millions of spectators will take in the brilliant displays around Monument Circle. In the middle stands the centerpiece, a 284 foot Christmas tree, standing lit as a symbol of peace and brotherhood. Every year I have stood in awe of that, and I have prayed a prayer of thanks for the teams of individuals who have contributed their time to give such joy. I’d like to tell you what just a small percentage of individuals have done behind the scenes for the Circle of Lights. Decorations on the Monument have been a holiday tradition since 1945. World War II
had just ended, and Christmas was nearing. Indianapolis architect Edward D. Pierre envisioned the Monument lit up in lights and decorations, standing as a symbol of peace and brotherhood. For the next 17 years, Christmas trees, giant candles and small toy maker shops brightened the Circle’s base, while elegant banners with phrases such as “Peace on Earth Good Will, Toward Men” clung to the Monument’s botom section. It wasn’t until 1962 Pierre’s vision of lights strung from the top of the Monument to its base became a reality. As I have mentioned, many people and organizations have played a role in designing, fabricating, installing and implementing the celebration décor. Initially, a group called the Indianapolis Christmas Commitee, or the Indianapolis Holidays Commitee, started the mission of what today is called the Circle of Lights. Tis mission today is the responsibility of Downtown Indy, Inc. Te union electricians of IBEW #481 have always been the organization to install and remove the décor. Two hundred of these volunteer electricians utilize more than six miles of electrical wire, 52 garland strands and 4,784 lights to produce Indiana’s
holiday centerpiece. In a chat with Julia Saltsgaver, Quality Connection Executive Director, she told me the electricians work one strand at a time hoisting up the most northern strand frst. Ten the most southern strand goes next. Te project continues with this north-tosouth rotation going in a counter-clockwise direction until completed. By handling the strands in this manner, great care is taken to protect the structure and integrity of the Indiana Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument in the transformation process. “Te contractors of Quality Connection and the IBEW #481 electrical workers are thrilled to provide their talent and skill to make sure that the Circle of Lights brings holiday joy for everyone,” Saltsgaver said. Te free celebration festivities start at 6 p.m. with the televised portion of the program running from 7-8 p.m. Te Monument lightup will occur at approximately 7:50 p.m. Te celebration incorporates local acts from dancers to choral groups, to singers and musicians, all of whom were selected back in early October from a panel of judges in a format similar to the American Idol auditions.

For the third year in a row, the nine member band from Mount Pleasant Christian Church, led by Brian Tabor, has been selected as the house band. Based out of Greenwood, the group will rock the night away with Christmas tunes in a variety of styles, including R&B, pop and classic rock.
“Yes,” she said, smiling. “We are also excited to have Indy’s own Josh Kaufman, 2014 winner of Te Voice, to headline the Circle of Lights. Additionally, professional performers appearing at the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s IPL Yuletide Celebration will take the stage. It’s going to be a spectacular show!”
“We are honored to serve as the house band for Circle of Lights again this year. Our team is hard at work, preparing music that will help us ring in the season of Christmas,” said Tabor. “We are thrilled to be a part of such a special event in the life of our city. It has become one of the highlights of our year. If you have never been to the Circle of Lights, I encourage you to check it out. It is an unbelievable experience.”
A lucky child each year is selected from a coloring contest to help “fip the switch” with Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard. Nearing 7:50 p.m., the spectator’s anticipation builds. “What’s that sound?” a litle boy screams from the crowd.
Siting down with Jennifer Hanson, Downtown Indy Senior Communication Director, I asked if the rumors were true.
“Ho, ho, ho!” It’s the jolly man himself! Santa! And as the child, Santa and the Mayor fip the switch, I’m sure I’ll hear Santa saying, “Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”

ON THE MOVE WITH THE NEW SUNRISE BAKERY Writer / Janet C. Striebel
All aboard! Sunrise Bakery in Fortville moves forward at full speed delighting customers with a large assortment of delicious baked confections. Sunrise Bakery, previously known as Sunrise Donuts, is under new ownership by Derek Owens and Katy Kitterman. Since July, this culinary establishment has moved a few doors down to its new location at 101 West Broadway on the corner of Broadway and Main. Upon entering the bakery you instantly grasp the clean, fresh, open concept and most welcoming presence. “We feature more than just donuts,” says Derek. “We bake fresh turnovers, Danishes, French macaroons, muffins, cupcakes, cheesecakes and mini Key lime pies. For a limited time we’re offering a seasonal favorite — caramel apples.”
Sunrise Bakery supports local vendors while satisfying customers at the same time. For instance, you can enjoy the convenience of ordering freshly made pies brought in from Mom’s Pies in Kokomo. Also, you can special order cakes for any occasion such as weddings, birthdays, graduations and more. Simply browse through the photo album in the store to choose your custom flavor and design for that special cake made from scratch by a local cake maker. Even the coffee is locally roasted in Central Indiana. Derek proudly asserts, “We sell coffee by the cup or ground-to-go and we make fresh coffee hourly.” The art work and décor of Sunrise Bakery features a modern industrial feel with original artworks by San Francisco-based artist Eric Joyner.
Derek points out, “Since the Fortville train history is so special and such a big part of the Derek and his girlfriend, Katy, serve as the unique culture here, we wanted to preserve primary bakers. Both entrepreneurs have a this nostalgia. We have the original Fortville history of working in restaurants throughout Train Station sign hanging on the wall, and the years. there is also a vintage Lionel model train-
layout constructed on two levels.” The two trains operate simultaneously from a remote control to enthuse customers of every age. Derek graduated with a degree in general studies and sociology and attributes much of the creativity throughout Sunrise Bakery to the talents of Katy and her interesting family. They each bring a fascinating element to the success of this locomotive enterprise. Katy began studying interior design at the Art Institute in Chicago and completed her degree at the Art Institute of Indianapolis. Her father, John Kitterman, volunteers his keen business sense and designed and built the Sunrise Bakery concept. Early railroad architecture is featured with a blend of toy trains and robots from the ’40s and ’50s. He even refurbished the original little pink elephant! Most recently, John was Partner in Development at EnterTRAINment Junction, a railroad themed family entertainment center in Cincinnati featuring

the world’s largest indoor train layout. Interestingly enough, he also worked on numerous projects and tours with singersongwriter Neil Young over the years and currently owns and operates a digital graphics business in Fortville.
For your next stop in Fortville, come taste the goods at Sunrise Bakery. Hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 6 a.m. - 1 p.m. and Sundays, 7 a.m. - 1 p.m. The new location offers outdoor seating on the patio.
Katy’s mother, Susan Kitterman, is equally involved with the bakery and lends her extensive knowledge of baking and business savvy to Sunrise. Susan is the founder and director of New World Youth Symphony Orchestra for the past 33 years. She is soon to retire and looks forward to dedicating all of her time after she concludes her final season with the orchestra. Katy’s younger brother, Henry Kitterman, attended Indiana University as a graphic design major and helped with general construction and fabrication of store fixtures. He also helps in the pastry kitchen and in strategic planning of future development of Sunrise Bakery.

BOBBY COX A GIVING MAN RECEIVES When a beloved realtor at the F.C. Tucker Geist office recently came down with an illness, his fellow agents jumped in to do what they could to help. Bobby Cox has been with Tucker since 2007. He has a heart of gold, and his friends wanted to help a man who has always helped others. The office planned a rummage sale in their front yard. Messages on Facebook and emails went out asking for donations. The results were overwhelming! Within two weeks, the office’s hallways became full of toys, furniture, clothes and home goods. “It was getting tough to walk through the office,” joked co-manager, Joe Dowd. “Nobody complained because we all knew who it was for.” The day of the sale was cold and rainy, but the people still came. Some customers even gave extra donations when they heard Cox’s story. Agents from other offices also came by to drop off checks and donations for the sale. Tents were set up in the office’s front yard and parking lot. The Tucker office was transformed into a Geist Flea Market that day!
F.C. Tucker’s rummage sale
At the end of the sale, over $6,000 was raised for Cox. When he was presented with a check, there were some tears. For a man who is so used to being the provider, he was now the giver was now a recipient. “This hasn’t all been easy,” said Cox. “But it’s shown me how blessed I am to have such good friends and family.” When realtors don’t work, they don’t get paid. Cox’s fellow agents were thrilled that they could come together to help ease some of their friend’s concerns. His friends and family visit him often. In this month of giving, consider visiting a friend or relative in a hospital, a nursing home or in their house if they are homebound. Nothing can make a person feel better than giving! If you would like to contribute to Bobby, please go to gofundme.com and search for “Bobby Cox.”

Included in the project is the reconstruction of the three wooden boardwalks that have been maintained by the Geist Harbours
This “low-hanging fruit” were spots where essentially the cost was low to connect existing trails – there were no utilities to worry about, and the town owned the land. And with their own equipment and labor, the only real cost was the asphalt material.
ATLANTIC ATLANTICRDRD
The paths are multi-use, so walking, running, rollerblading and biking are allowed on the paths. But any sort of motorized vehicle is not allowed – this includes mopeds and golf carts. “That gets the pedestrians and the recreational bicyclists off the road,” said Hill.
“We brought in an in-house engineer [Corey Pressler] to start planning for, identifying and programming where we could find this low-hanging fruit,” said Hill.
ATLANTIC ATLANTICAVEAVE
“It’s wide enough to get us the ability to have two-way traffic, so you’re not on a 4 foot wide concrete walk like some of that portion around Geist and Masthead along Fall Creek (road), and maybe you have to stop to make sure you don’t run into somebody,” said Hill.
Hill explains that the multi-use trail project funded by the Geist Impoundment Fund fits nicely with the existing bike and pedestrian master plan already in motion by the town of Fishers. In 2012, the Fishers Town Council committed $300,000 annually to identify and execute trail projects throughout Fishers.
RDRD CYNTHEANNE CYNTHEANNE
At a cost of approximately $2 million, the 1.67 mile asphalt trail will be 8-to-10-feet wide in most places allowing for two-way traffic. Funding is coming from the $3.7 million set aside after the 2010 annexation of Geist by the Town of Fishers.
RDRD CYNTHEANNE CYNTHEANNE
Just as the roundabout sculptures finish up on Fall Creek Road, the Geist Impoundment Board announced their next big project in the queue. Walkers, runners and bikers on the Fishers side of Geist will be happy to see a project that entails a wider, safer trail along Fall Creek Road from 96th Street to Brooks School Road.
Property Owners Association (“GHPOA”) since the mid-80s. A recent engineering study conducted by GHPOA showed that a few of the boardwalk supports would be in need of repair or replacement in the near future, mostly from erosion and water runoff around the bridge footers over the years. Town officials intend on building the new trail, boardwalks and maintaining them going forward.

The overall goal of the trail project is to fill in the gaps between the current trails. Hill relayed that several subdivisions in Fishers have been built with sidewalks that end a few hundred feet from one another. Whether it’s an empty lot or existing home, the town has the right away to connect these gaps in a cost-effective manner. “There is pretty good connectivity there with finding these kind of gaps on the map and completing the trail,” said Hill. With the completion of the trail along the north side of 96th Street between Carroll Road and Olio Road, a 7.5 mile loop will be created that will connect residents along Olio Road, 116th Street, Brooks School Road and 96th Street. Residents in the area welcome the new trails and made their thoughts known on a recent Facebook post. “I think it is an excellent idea,” said Cassidy Stevens Watson. “I see people utilizing the trails every day at all hours. I was thrilled to see the extension of walkway from Cambridge to Fox Hollow along 96th street.” Another resident was happy to see connectivity around the reservoir.
Fishers engineers Jeff Hill and Corey Pressler review plans for multi-use paths throughout the town.
Upgrade without upkeep.
“It would be fantastic and long overdue to put a trail in place so walkers, runners and bikers could safely go around the entire lake,” said Kelly McClure. Other residents are also wishing for trail connectivity around the south end of Geist Reservoir in the Marion County neighborhoods. Elizabeth Mercho Khamis typified the sentiments of those residents by saying “…If we could fill in the few gaps around the rest of the lake, we could have a complete 10 mile trail around the lake.” Bulter, Fairman and Seufert Civil Engineering will be leading the project. In their proposal, they estimated a mid-2016 completion date. For a full map of the existing and proposed trails around Geist Reservoir, visit atGeist.com.

ou may have heard her name from volunteering at your child’s school for some committee or helping out with the Geist Half & 5K. For anyone whom has already met her, there can be no denying that Aprill Rogers-Shelburne is quite unforgettable.
She is friendly, energetic, bubbly, upbeat, intelligent and feisty in her approach to getting a job well done. She stays incredibly focused to succeed on any project with which she is assigned. Due to her diligent work ethic and astonishing results along the way, she has been asked to serve as the new Executive Director of Geist Half & 5K. “I am honored that the board believes in my abilities and has chosen me to be the Executive Director,” says Shelburne, who
started her new role on October 1. She is also the school director and volunteer coordinator for the Geist Half & 5K. Originally from Louisville, Kentucky, Shelburne has found Fishers to be her home for 20 years. Shelburne fulfilled her first leadership role for the Hamilton Southeastern PTO when her children were in elementary school and has continued to support the school corporation throughout the years. She was the President of the Fishers High School PTO during its formative years, establishing events such as Annual Chili Dinner, Give Back Program, Fashion Show and several others.

Great for corporate events, organizations or large families
Leaving solid financials and traditions in place at the new high school, Shelburne was asked to join the Hamilton Southeastern Foundation Board where she had great success as chairperson of the Inaugural Mudsock event and the Corporate Dinner. At the end of her service, she was recruited to work with HSSF’s largest single donor, the Geist Half Marathon, Inc. “I first met Aprill when we worked together on the Hamilton Southeastern Foundation Board,” said Matt Troyer, president of the Geist Half & 5K. “I was very impressed with her ability to turn the Foundation’s vision for a VIP event into a reality in very short order. That led me to ask her to get involved with the Geist Half. She quickly analyzed the difficulties we were having with various facets of our school program, then created and implemented steps to improve the experience for everyone. She has been a tireless leader within the Geist Half ever since.”
COMMUNICATION IS KEY WITH PLAN TO EXPAND GEIST 5K
When Shelburne started helping with the Geist Half & 5K, she recognized the need for communication enhancement. At that time, only seven of the 20 schools in the HSE district were participating in the events. In a short time she increased the participation among

HERE ARE WHAT SOME VOLUNTEERS ARE SAYING ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCE IN HELPING WITH THE GEIST HALF & 5K:
“Aprill, you do amazing work and it is always a pleasure to work with you. I know how hard you work and we (Healthy Hawks) appreciate it.” -Mary Carson (School Program) “Great race! Your communication & caring shines through! Thank you for all your hard work. Our St. Simon Royal Runners had a blast! Thanks so much.” -Laura Mates (School Program) “It was well organized & I enjoyed it & will volunteer again. When asked how she was able to increase participation, she said it was constant communication among all levels. First, Shelburne visited the superintendents of both the Lawrence and HSE school systems to stress the importance of supporting the Geist Half & 5K since 100 percent of the proceeds of this event go right back to the schools. Incidentally, as of last year, the marathon has donated a total In her new role as Executive Director, Shelburne will still continue of $300,000 over the last six years, giving $150,000 to each of the to be the volunteer coordinator and school director. school systems. In essence, she wanted to create a trickle-down effect, encouraging better communication and support starting from the top. “Currently, I’m working with a Chicago-based race team that can help us expand as we grow,” said Shelburne. “They are assisting us Second, Shelburne felt the need to speak up about better support with hosting this event with things like logistics, expo, start/finish for all volunteers of the Geist Half & 5K. Geist Half & 5K has a mission to help promote health and fitness in youth and therefore encourages area schools and youth organizations to develop their own training program by combining a group of kids and adult mentors who would like to participate in either the 5K (more appropriate for the younger and novice runner) or the half marathon (for the older more experienced runner). Although promotion of the training program, registration for the race and race day management is the responsibility of the school, Geist Half & 5K offers guidance and resources to assist with these processes, as well as a training program coordinator to support the school every step of the way.

So Springer infused a

When the cup is pushed down onto the nozzle, it pushes the magnet up and allows beer to fow into the cup until it is full, at which time the system stops. When the operator is ready to grab the beer, she pulls the cup up of the nozzle, and the magnet foats back down to seal the hole before more than a thimbleful of beer spills out into the drain. How cool is that? Even beter for the user is the fact that Botoms Up produces a perfect foam head, meaning less foam needing to be poured out. Even beter is that multiple beers can

Banker’s Life Fieldhouse is an example of how Botoms Up can beneft a venue. With the Botoms Up System, their beer sales increased by 30 percent, their mixed drinks increased by 30 percent and they did it with nine less kegs. It’s genius!
Tat’s exactly how I would describe Springer – genius. He never fnished college – not because he couldn’t, but rather because he didn’t need to. He invented the product, created the business and even developed the assembly lines. But that doesn’t mean he didn’t encounter obstacles. “Doing something that’s never been done before and geting people to understand and wrap their minds around it [was a challenge],” Springer said. “For example, it was difcult to fnd a manufacturer for the dispenser or cups, so we decided to just do it ourselves.” Botoms Up dispensers have found residence in 49 states (except stubborn Rhode Island), Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Italy, Scandinavia, Germany, Norway and soon the UK. Growth is in the future for GrinOn Industries, according to Springer. Tey are also working on producing reusable glassware and pitchers for their systems and expanding their home units (yes, you can have a system in your basement!) and commercial sales. Tey are currently in a fundraising stage and looking for accredited investors. I encourage you to check out their website at BotomsUpBeer.com, at the very least, for a visual of how the system works. FOLLOW Saint THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD Simon Theater Presents the Wizard of Oz She explains how the previous shows put on by St. Simon Theater were a “review” format, a musical featuring excerpts from various musicals. Collins wrote the scripts for both previous shows.
Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger
Lions and Tigers and Bears, OH MY! You’ll find those and more on stage at St. Simon Theater’s production of The Wizard of Oz. This year’s show, St. Simon Theater’s third annual production, showcases some of the school’s brightest and freshest talent. Led by co-directors Suzanne Collins and Marla Smith-Clapacs, the show is much more than just another presentation of a classic musical. It’s 90 minutes of spectacular performances from the most unforgettable junior Broadway performers on stage.
“That format worked well since the performers were rookies,” said Collins. “Now that they have a few years under their belts, we’re able to look at their skills and find a part for them to shine.”
Bedazzled in authentic, custom costumes, this year’s cast will own the stage, a stage that will be adorned with magnificent, lifelike props conceived of by a handful of parent leaders and built by the hands of the performers’ moms and dads. There is no doubt these kids will sing and dance their way into your hearts in The Wizard of Oz.
She explains it’s from a Bible verse in the Book of Thessalonians, and it’s one she wants to resonate with the children throughout the process.
No matter what role or level of experience a performer has, Collins has one mission for the children in this year’s show. “Encourage one another and build each other up,” she said.
I took my backstage pass and sat down with Collins and SmithClapacs in the Emerald City to get a glimpse of The Wizard of Oz.
“It’s a great guiding principle,” Collins said. “During tryouts, there’s competition for the roles. So after tryouts, some are happy, some are sad. But once in the show, the competition goes away. Because during a performance, you’re in the spotlight, and you need that encouragement.”
Collins opens by sharing her thoughts about this year’s show.
Smith-Clapacs has a guiding principle of her own.
“I’m excited about The Wizard of Oz, because this is the first time we’ve done a copyrighted show,” said Collins.
“Music lifts the soul … Being a part of music makes the soul soar. It’s the element that adds richness to a theater performance,” she said.

A veteran stage performer who’s been in the spotlight since the age of four, Collins never had difficulty with self-confidence, and her passion for performing on stage has never extinguished. Growing up in Brooklyn with easy access to Broadway, Collins was immersed in theater and the arts. “My first show was a dance recital where I performed Tiptoe Through the Tulips,” said Collins. “At that moment, I knew I wanted to be on stage. Like my dad, I was athletic, I loved swimming and I had a competitive spirit. But it was my passion for performing that was strongest. My parents recognized it in me and let me explore it. They encouraged me every step of the way with lessons and taking me to shows.” Another of Collins’ passions has been the art of public speaking. During her tenure at Miami of Ohio in the communications department, she trained her students to feel confident and in control in front of an audience. “Whether it’s performing or public speaking, it’s all about the applause and approval. It’s a self-esteem building block,” said Collins. With a gift for performing and public speaking in one pocket and a passion to share it in the other, Collins waited for the opportunity to make her dream a reality. Her dream came to fruition when she started St. Simon Theater just three years ago. She approached the presiding principal about organizing the first show. “It all just clicked,” said Collins. “He was all for it. He was very fond of the arts as is our new principal, so he gave me the green light to get it off the ground.” That’s when Smith-Clapacs became involved. With a strong musical background of her own and a shared passion for performing, SmithClapacs approached Collins asking her to let her help out and be a part of it. From then on, the two became ultimate co-stars. “Marla amazed me when she offered to help,” said Collins. “I don’t know what I would do without her.” Collins took on the role of acting coach while Smith-Clapacs took on the role of music coach. It seems the admiration is mutual. “I am amazed by Suzanne Collins,” said Smith-Clapacs. “Her creative mind and ability to translate her thoughts and vision onto the stage is simply incredible. But even beyond her creativity, I am amazed by her dedication to the educational experience for our young performers. She is so committed to helping each and every performer grow throughout the experience.” Like Collins, Smith-Clapacs found her love for performing as a child. “I was very fortunate as a young child to have parents who valued 50 / GEIST COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / NOVEMBER 2014 / atGeist.com

music and theater and planted a seed that grew into a love for the performing arts,” said Smith-Clapacs. “I loved being a part of the theater and having an opportunity to express myself in new and different ways. I began taking violin lessons when I was 3 years old and piano lessons when I was 7. My affection for musical theater bloomed from backyard performances beginning when I was 9 years old.” She adds that her favorite role of all time was that of Peter Pan, a role her daughter Caroline reprised in last year’s show. From the beginning, Collins’ and Smith-Clapacs’ vision for St. Simon Theater has always been to educate the children and expose them to the arts and the environment of theater. They call it “Educational Theater.” “Suzanne and I are unified in our desire to provide an educational musical theater experience for our students that goes beyond scripts and music notes, to building their confidence and assisting them in recognizing that they are their own beautiful works of art,” said Smith-Clapacs. And Collins added that the younger children start, the better. “Not everyone is bound to be a Broadway star,” said Collins. “You can’t start at age 15 and expect to master it right away. You have to start young. I want them to have these skills because once they learn those skills, they’ll stay with them forever.”
it in him,” said Collins. “That’s what it’s all about.” Smith-Clapacs smiles broadly as she tells me about the performer that stood out to her. “A young girl told us she auditioned because she’d seen the smiles on the faces of the performers both on and off the stage for the past two years and she wants that smile,” said Smith-Clapacs. “Her statement captured in words the true joy that these students feel being part of this collaborative effort. The joy is contagious and freely shared!” As if the magic from the kids and the transformations haven’t been fulfilling enough, there’s another element that’s brought unexpected joys far beyond what the two imagined. “So many parents have just jumped right in, pitched in to help, latched on to the dream and taken it farther than I ever dreamed,” said Collins. “It’s humbling.” The journey down the yellow brick road has surely been a long one for these junior performers, the co-directors and parents alike. While the time will come to breathe a collective sigh of relief when the curtain closes, Collins and Smith-Clapacs are already energized for the next show. “We work on the shows two years out,” said Collins. “So we’re already making plans for next year’s show.”
Collins is definitely starting these young performers early. To many of them, it may seem like a lot of long hours spent perfecting and polishing. But to Collins, it’s not just about that.
Considering the number of performers who participate in St. Simon Theater has increased each year, they should have no problem putting together the next show.
“When we prepare for a show, we rehearse adequately,” said Collins. “Of course I want them to do a good job. But it’s important to me to help them build their self-confidence. When you’re confident, that’s when you shine.”
“I feel like we’re getting to the point where it’s getting kinda cool to be a theater nerd,” said Collins.
Watching the kids work their magic on stage isn’t the only amazing thing that’s happened throughout this process. Collins says witnessing transformations happen has been incredible, like when a shy child comes out of her shell on stage. She recalls one performer who auditioned for the first show. “She was terrified, but she did a lovely job,” she said. “After it was over, she broke down and cried because of her nerves. We gave her a solo that year, and she was floored. This year, she’s got one of the lead roles in the show.” She gets emotional and tears up as she tells me another story, this one about a time when a mom came approached her to talk about her son’s performance.
Smith-Clapacs has another theory about the popularity of St. Simon Theater. “The students find unity on stage through singing, dancing and acting, and that unity brings an unparalleled sense of camaraderie and joy,” said Smith-Clapacs. As my time in the Emerald City draws to a close, I’m left more excited than ever for the show to start. You’ll find me backstage, but you can get your tickets now. Come see The Wizard of Oz, playing November 14 and 15 at Fall Creek Valley Middle School. Suzanne Huntzinger has a journalism degree from IU and has lived in the Geist community for 18 years.

TOWNEPOST ANNOUNCES NEW “TOWNE CLIPPER” COUPON MAGAZINE AND MOBILE APP LOCAL PRINT AND MOBILE COUPONS DESIGNED TO PROMOTE LOCAL Northside TownePost Network publications Geist, Fishers, Carmel and Zionsville Community Newsletters will have a new insert launching in January 2015: The Towne Clipper coupon magazine. Advertisers will be able to target a combined 70,000 homeowners through direct mailed magazines each month. A mobile app called the Townies Super Local App will accompany the print publications with mobile couponing features. “This will be a unique offering for retailers and home services companies that use coupons to attract new and repeat business,” said Tom Britt, publisher of the TownePost Network. “Users will be able to present their print coupons or redeem the offers via our mobile app that allows advertisers to have real-time, onsite coupons.” Through the mobile app, users can “check-in” and see what offers are available to them based on their GPS location.
Likewise advertisers can determine which coupons are available to users based on the day of the week, time of day, and whether or not coupons can have multiple redemptions. All app activity is then reported back to the retailers monthly to help fine tune coupon offerings and messaging. “Redeeming coupons on a mobile phone is old news. Our app goes a step further by enticing locals to socialize their experience by sharing their check-ins through their Twitter and Facebook posts,” added Britt. There will be two versions of the Towne Clipper print insert: One for the 35,000 Zionsville and Carmel community newsletters and one for the 35,000 Fishers and Geist community newsletters. MEET RICK HARRISON SENIOR FINANCIAL ADVISOR FOR SYM FINANCIAL IN CARMEL
Writer / Neil Lucas . Photographer / JJ Kaplan
Geist area resident, Rick Harrison is a 25-year veteran of the investment advisory industry and is also the senior financial adviser for SYM Financial Advisors in its Carmel office. Harrison has a unique commitment to his faith and community. For those unfamiliar with SYM Financial Advisors, their the second largest Registered Investment Advisory firm in the state of Indiana with an office in Carmel, which provides full-service wealth management, portfolio management and retirement plan management services to clients throughout the United States. SYM also has $1.5 billion of assets under management. After working for 15 years with another wealth management firm located in Fishers, Harrison, in 2012, accepted a challenge to be the CFO of a church located in Little Rock, Ark. The church sought out a seasoned financial professional to temporarily help as it looked to move from an abandoned Walmart building. The move to the new space had the potential to put the church in significant financial
trouble. With Harrison’s guidance the church successfully made the transition to the space while securing its financial future. With the job complete and the church’s finances secure, Harrison accepted his position with SYM. Upon returning to Indiana, Harrison continued his commitment to his community and his faith. Harrison regularly participates in a local prison ministry that requires him to regularly meet with inmates at the local Pendleton facility. In addition to his involvement with the prison ministry, Harrison has been active in the Epilepsy Foundation of Indiana, as both treasurer and board member. Jerry Yeager, CEO of SYM, recently commented that SYM looked for quite a while to find just the right person to head its Carmel office. However, as soon as they met Harrison they knew he had the exceptional qualities they had been searching. If you are looking for an experienced financial adviser with deep roots and a commitment to his community, contact Rick Harrison.
