“We customize all our healing and treatment protocols to a client’s wants or needs,” Richardson says.

As we age, mobility becomes increasingly important in our physical health. Myo-Fit Mobility and Therapy in Westfield provides musculoskeletal care ranging from evaluations to treatment by certified and licensed athletic trainers. Sara Richardson, director of mobility and therapy services, believes the healing practices used by athletic trainers shouldn’t be just for elite athletes.

Richardson says her goal is to treat the root cause of the patient’s issue instead of treating the pain with medication. The handson manual therapy approach treats current injuries and helps to prevent new ones. Richardson says her staff plays a central role in wellness as athletic trainers are designed to be the first line of defense from a musculoskeletal standpoint.

“There aren’t many athletic trainers currently providing their services and skill set to the general public,” she says. “We provide one-on-one care to the physically active or those who want to be physically active. A majority of our clients are physically active people, but maybe they’ve sat at a desk for 30 years and they’ve become stiff or tight.”

“If we can get people in before they’re injured, we can assess some of these imbalances before they become a source of pain or an injury,” Richardson says. “It makes for a happier, healthier person.

We encourage people to come to see us first even before seeing a primary-care doctor. We can assess and determine if they should get imaging done or if it’s something like a minor tweak.”

One-on-one care means the staff at Myo-Fit provides undivided attention to clients. Richardson says everyday activities like holding a newborn or staring down at a computer screen can often lead to pain and injuries.

Treatments can involve joint mobilization, stretching, soft-tissue mobilization, myofascial release, muscle energy, instrument-assisted soft-tissue mobilization, and dry needling.

“Dry needling is a western medicine technique where needles are used to target tight or overused muscles,” Richardson says. “It can help stimulate better blood flow to help release those muscles so they work better. We’re trying to work from the inside out.”

Myo-Fit offers two clinic locations (Westfield and downtown Indianapolis) and five other satellite locations around Indianapolis. The staff of five including Richardson spreads out between the two clinics and satellite locations.

“Many of our satellite locations are located within fitness facilities,” Richardson says. “Just because you don’t work out there or aren’t a member doesn’t mean you can’t come to see us. Our services are open to anyone. We don’t want to exclude anyone from getting the proper care they need.”

Initial evaluations last about 15 to 20 minutes. While the business doesn’t accept insurance, Richardson says their selfpay model does accept health savings and flexible spending accounts.

Matt spent 30 years in corporate marketing and sales, and was looking to build something of his own. Susan spent 30 years working in fitness and wellness. The couple jumped at the idea of opening a StretchLab location in the Carmel/Westfield area.

Each flexologist must have some type of body certification before working at StretchLab. Then they go through a 60-hour certification process through StretchLab that includes online classes, a hands-on workshop and dedicated practice time.

The new concept provides one-on-one, customized stretches facilitated by a trained professional called a Flexologist. Clients come in for an initial session and are evaluated using a 3D body scanning tool called MAPS.

“We’ve got flexologists that are certified for personal training, massage therapy, physical therapy and yoga, so they all understand the body and are good working with people,” Maloney says. “They are also people that truly care about helping others and want to make a difference in transforming people’s lives.”

“The client does three overhead squats in front of the machine,” Maloney says. “It gives us a quantitative score, but also shows an image of the body highlighting areas of tightness or imbalance.”

I want to build a trust with my patients and explain all the details so they can be confident and prepared going forward with a procedure.”

Once Dr. Tieman has crafted a plan of action, he explains to the patient how he will merge the patient’s vision and his skills to achieve the desired results.

For most, American Heart Month in February is a reminder to check up on their heart health. For JD Schellhammer, it’s a reminder that one seemingly simple decision potentially saved his life.

His physician at the time tried a few medications, but nothing worked.

“The doctor said, ‘Well, you got AFIB and there’s not a heck of a lot we can do about it. When he was done with the procedure, staff told him his heart was “going wild.” He was later diagnosed with atrial fibrillation (AFIB). It’s an arrythmia in which the top chambers of the heart quiver, which makes the bottom chambers of the heart beat in an

Dr. Lambert put Schellhammer on medications, but he recommended Schellhammer see another cardiologist at IU Health Saxony as well, Dr. Antonio Navarrete, who specializes in clinical cardiac electrophysiology.

“Medicine has become very complex with multiple sub-specialties in order to provide the best care for the patient,” Dr. Navarrete said. “It is impossible for one physician to be an expert in the entire field.”

Schellhammer had already underwent pacemaker placement before he transferred to IU Health Saxony. However, several years later, Dr. Lambert recognized symptoms indicating Schellhammer needed a new pacemaker. Dr. Navarrete upgraded the pacemaker by adding a new wire and new pacemaker defibrillator, which he said restored almost normal heart pumping and significantly improved Schellhammer’s quality of life.

“I’m enjoying my retirement a lot since then,” Schellhammer said. “I have honestly never felt better.”

He believes seeking additional treatment from Dr. Lambert and Dr. Navarrete saved his life.

“Quite possibly I would be dead.”

Dr. Lambert agrees that if Schellhammer had left his AFIB untreated, there would have been serious health risks.

“The biggest risk of unrecognized or untreated atrial fibrillation is a stroke, as a blood clot can form inside the heart and then travel up to the brain,” Dr. Lambert said. “Another possible complication is congestive heart failure, which can occur if the heart beats too fast for too long while in atrial fibrillation. Fortunately, with proper diagnosis and treatment, this is treatable and can be reversed.”

After his experience, Schellhammer encourages anyone having heart issues to see a physician sooner rather than later.

“If you think you have a problem, go and get it looked at.”

Both doctors stress that early detection of heart issues is beneficial when it comes to treatment.

“Most heart conditions these days can be very effectively treated if caught early enough,” Dr. Lambert said. “A generation ago, congestive heart failure was a death sentence. Now, we fully expect the majority of patients to live fulfilling lives, even with this diagnosis. Heart attacks can be stopped in their midst with an angioplasty procedure. Strokes from atrial fibrillation can be prevented with medications or procedure. We have so much to offer these days, including affordable screening tests that can benefit entire populations. We have highly skilled cardiac specialists at IU Health Saxony and IU Health North available to treat all these conditions and more.”

“Don’t put it off,” Dr. Navarrete added. “It can add years and quality of life to your future. It is probably the best investment you can do.

The theme for 2022 is “Talk About It”, set by the organization Love Is Respect, a national organization bringing awareness to teen dating violence. TDVPM is a call to action for youth and the adults who support them to have conversations about relationships and how to navigate them in healthy and safe ways.

It is important for us to Talk About It because we know that teen dating violence happens. We know that talking around it or avoiding the topic is not helping. We know that talking about such a challenging subject is scary and intimidating. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists teen dating violence as a public health crisis. And the pandemic has only increased the instances that go unrecognized and the number of youth who are not receiving support.

To enhance this important work, we have an updated Teen Dating Violence Prevention Month (TDVPM) Toolkit available through Prevail’s website (www.prevailinc.org). With this FEBRUARY 2022

kit the community will find information about resources, discussion starters, activities, and handouts about teen dating violence. Our hope is that everyone can use any or all of what is included to start conversations with the teens in your life and enhance your knowledge about healthy relationships, which are the antidote to dating violence. Included in the toolkit are activity suggestions ranging from five-minute conversations to full lesson plans, so there are many options to fit any time you have available.

History of Love Letters The love letter. The pouring out of one’s heart to another. A tradition that has been practiced for thousands of years. A message that drips with intent and passion for another sealed with a red lipstick kiss and tucked away in pocket or under a pillow for that special someone to find.

Some of the earliest records of love letters can be found in the Bibles, Song of Solomon or in the ancient Indian text the Bhagavata Purana. Every culture and creed seem to have some version of the love letter and humans of all ages could be the target of Cupid’s arrow.

Over the years these declarations of love have evolved. The early renaissance produced verbose love letters written in elaborate penmanship. Letters which would travel weeks or months before falling into their lovers’ hands. Through the Victorian era love letters were not only meant for far away love but became an important part of courtship allowing lovers to share words too difficult to speak.

In the 20th century men and women found themselves overseas as war blanketed the 1900’s. Love letters with an included photo, and stationary spritzed with perfume became a steadfast reminder of what was waiting at home.

The 21st century brought about an explosion of technology which in turn transformed the traditional love letter. Emails with alluring subject lines and playful fonts replaced pages of handwritten words.

Today the love letter may come in many different forms. A note passed in a high school classroom, a sweet text or a short “I Love You” scribbled on scrap paper and left by a made pot of coffee.

It is remembering the shared moments and feelings with that special someone that drives us to expression. Though the traditional love letter may be less common today it is still a cherished way to bring about romance, shared memories and hoped for futures. To write the words she’ll keep tucked away in a shoe box in her closet or think about as she plays with the ring on her finger. alentine’s Day is coming up, which means it’s time to start planning the perfect date for you and your special someone. Do you prefer a typical dinner with your loved one or would you rather enjoy a Valentine’s Day that’s a little more memorable? Whatever you like, here are a few ideas that you may or may not have thought of before.

1. GO SKATING

Lots of outdoor ice rinks are still open through the end of February so check out your options. Skating under the stars can be very romantic. If outdoor skating isn’t an option, look into skating times at your local indoor rink or even roller rink.

Gliding around together and holding hands is always a good time. If you aren’t comfortable with skating, grab some hot chocolates and go watch others do it. This can actually be quite entertaining and definitely leave you with something to talk (or laugh) about!

3. PLAN A PICNIC

While you might not be able to do this outside, there are plenty of indoor-friendly ways to have a picnic. Set up in the living room in front of the fire, crack open a bottle of wine, and enjoy some light snacks and appetizers while getting to know each other a little better - or, if you’ve been together a while, getting to know each other again.

4. DO A DRIVE-IN DATE

Load up the car with some folding chairs, cozy blankets and lots of snacks, and head to your closest drive-in theater for an evening with a throwback feel. Depending on the weather, you could set this up in your backyard, at the park or even in the basement if the weather won’t cooperate. If you plan to do it at home, string some bistro lights for a little extra magic, and don’t forget the popcorn.

little taste of Michigan opened in Westfield earlier this year when Biggby Coffee opened at the corner of 146th Street and Ditch Road.

It was an exciting venture when newlyweds, David and Natalie Clase, decided to bring something special to their beloved city.

“Natalie and I had always had an idea that a coffee shop would be a great idea, because we both love coffee,” David says. “There’s not much variety in our area, so I thought it’d be a lot of fun.”

When posed with the choice of either starting an independent coffee shop or opening a franchise, the Clases knew that while they know how to run a business, they weren’t all that familiar with running a coffee shop, so they wanted support from a franchise. In a world that may seem overrun by the larger franchises like Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks, Biggby Coffee was started as a way for the community to come together, relax, enjoy unique but scrumptious drinks and have a way to give back to the

community. The company believes in giving back, which is highlighted on the company website with a way to request donations. Nonprofits can request items such as products, gift certificates or donations.

“When we first opened Biggby Coffee in Lansing, Michigan, so many people helped us open the first shop. I vowed at that moment to always give back, and this is something that manifests itself in our stores day in and day out,” says founder Bob Fish on the Biggby Coffee website.

It was that company policy that was just one of the reasons David and Natalie made the decision to bring the unique coffee chain to Westfield.

“The values of Biggby Coffee are ones that we share: Be Yourself. Have Fun. Share Great Coffee,” Clase says. “We promote the idea that everyone is welcome.

Even the colors of the shop and how it’s put together, it’s designed to be a fun, welcoming place for everyone. We just love the culture of Biggby Coffee.”

A director with Indiana Wish, a group that supports Hoosier children with terminal illnesses, Clase is looking forward to uniting his passion for the children with his new business to help. During the grand opening, one dollar from every drink sold went to Prevail, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering victims of crime and abuse. The total donation in one day was $542.

“We want to give back, and we want to give back locally, so we’re looking forward to being a boost in our community’s lives one way or another,” Clase says.

The Biggby Coffee menu features not only coffees, teas and treats, but also Biggby Boost Smoothies, which are made with Greek yogurt, and a children’s menu of drinks.

When Caleb King, a senior at Westfield High School, started his last high school football season, he also set out to raise money for childhood cancer research.

It was a lofty goal, but he more than met it.

King, a kicker for the Westfield Shamrocks, raised money for childhood cancer research by asking for pledges for every point he scored during the football season. He says he had an initial goal to raise $2,000.

“I raised $15,358 and scored 76 points,” King says. “People could pledge money per point. On top of that, it was one-time donations. The story ran on multiple TV

King says that for every point he scored last season, he made a vow to donate money to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF). King’s efforts were called “Kick It,” and he was able to successfully get the Westfield community to rally behind him and make donations.

King notes that ALSF is an organization that changes the lives of children with cancer by finding impactful research, raising awareness, supporting families and employing people to help cure childhood cancer.

King says there are many positive ways to get involved with ALSF. “Other people can get involved by starting their own fundraiser, or getting online and donating through Alex’s Lemonade Stand,” King says.

says he also likes being involved in Westfield High School’s Student Impact program.

The program provides a safe place to hang out with friends and make new ones after school.

King has high goals for the future.

“Hopefully I will play football in college,” he says. “I should have that figured out in the next couple of months.”

King is still touched by how much the Westfield community supported him.

“I hope that more has come from this than just the money raised,” he says. “I hope my younger teammates learn to lead by example. The fundraiser wasn’t a hard thing to do in a city like Westfield. I told Westfield High School Head Football Coach Jake Gilbert my vision and that God put this cause on my heart, and he embraced it.”

King is very grateful for the support he received.

“I appreciate Westfield City Councilman Scott Frei and Coach Gilbert for letting me speak at the Westfield City Council meeting about what I was doing to raise money for childhood cancer research,” King says. “It really is what boosted the effort. The meeting, as well as the TV news stories, helped me reach over $15,000. I’m grateful for anyone who donated and shared the page we had on alexslemonade.org.

All the glory goes to God for getting this community to come together. We have a common goal to help end childhood cancer.

None of this is about me. It’s about the children that defeat this disease being able to go ride a bike again and just be kids.”

The new director of communications for the City of Westfield is a familiar face to many. For more than 25 years, Chris Proffitt traveled the world as a reporter and served as an anchor for Indianapolis television stations WTHR and WRTV. Most recently he held the position of director of communications for the Indiana Attorney General’s office. He brings a vast amount of knowledge regarding central Indiana and Hamilton County to his new position.

Proffitt’s experience being in public makes him a good fit for the duties he is assuming in Westfield. As the city’s media relations representative and spokesperson, he is responsible for creating marketing materials such as press releases, the city newsletters and any online communication, as well overseeing the city’s website. He will be supervising events to promote the city such as ribbon cuttings, tours and open houses.

assists the city manager, the city council and all department heads if needed in drafting external correspondence. In addition, he handles special projects such as applying for or even developing awards.

“I enjoyed my time at the Indiana Attorney General’s office and I only have good things to say,” he says. “It was a wonderful experience. I met so many accomplished people and I learned so much. As the state’s law firm, it was extremely busy all the time and I always felt challenged. It was a natural progression from my television skills and a

great opportunity to make a left turn. I just stumbled across the Westfield job. It’s such a progressive community and I’ve known Mayor Cook just by covering Westfield. A friend told me the position was open and I reached out and sent my resume. Why wouldn’t I want to work in a beautiful place that has a lot happening?”

While Proffitt was in broadcast journalism, he produced award-winning material that was aired locally, statewide, nationally and internationally. Close-to-home topics included businesses, schools, safety issues and community organizations, and those experiences contribute to his understanding of a city such as Westfield. Fortunate to be given several special assignments, he had the opportunity to cover some international happenings and events. He earned nine Emmy awards, received several regional Edward R. Murrow awards, and won a national Edward R. Murrow first-place award.

“One of my most memorable assignments

was when I was with WTHR,” he says.

“They had a tremendous commitment to covering the Olympics. I covered the Atlanta Summer Games and then four years later they sent me to Sydney with a very talented photographer, Steve Rhodes. They asked us to travel and deliver great stories of things people wouldn’t get to see. It is one of the most magical places - somewhere everyone wants to go. We went to the Great Barrier Reef and the Outback. There was such a stark contrast between the ocean and an environment that looks like the surface of Mars.”

A resident of Hamilton County for many years, Proffitt knows its strengths. He feels more places like Hamilton County are needed around the state. As a fast-growing and vibrant city, Westfield is an asset to the county and Hamilton County is an asset to the city.

As director of communications, Proffitt’s goal is to position the City of Westfield

in the best possible way. In addition to promoting the city locally, statewide and nationally, he wants to connect with the citizens living in Westfield. The Westfield Welcome program is something he champions and looks forward to expanding.

“In this position I’ll promote the city to show what a great place it is,” he says. “The Westfield Welcome program has one event after another planned, especially with the opening of Grand Junction Plaza. There will be concert series and movie nights. There is a reason why Westfield has won awards such as Best Small City in America [by WalletHub for 2016] and Third Best City to Raise a Family [by WalletHub for 2017]. I loved my time in television and traveling the world, but now I’m really doing what I’ve always done - promoting a city. Everyone has welcomed me with open arms. I’ve been pretty busy. I just jumped in and I’m loving every minute. I like coming to work and I’m thrilled to be here. It doesn’t feel like work.”
