business, saw an opportunity for not only himself and his wife, but also for his longtime clients. Whitesell didn’t have to look too far for partners. In fact, he just had to look to the landlords of the building itself, Bob and Michelle Beauchamp. “Curt calls me up one day to tell me the Wrights were looking to sell the restaurant, so I asked him if he was up to managing the business,” Bob says. A deal was then struck. The Beauchamps would continue their ownership of the building and their title as landlords, and the Whitesells became the “face of the company,” as Bob calls the managing couple. “The restaurant came with a really good management team and staff already, so there’s no need to replace anyone,” Curt says. “Jen is acting as the general manager and I’ll be doing the marketing. Bob and Michelle, as the landlords, will be working to continually improve the building inside and out. I just love it and saw that this was just one more way we could invest in downtown Westfield.”

Citing his real estate business and his appreciation for his wife’s experience and knowledge, Curt says it’ll be Jen running most aspects of the restaurant. “She’s really good at it and she was ready to work for herself, so it’s a natural fit,” he says. The Beauchamps have lived in Westfield since 1983 and currently own Beauchamp Antiques in town. “We have no experience running restaurants, just owning them, so our roles are perfectly set as partners,” Michelle says. The Beauchamps were inspired to continually invest in their hometown through the commercial outlet, and are looking forward to being active in the improvements that are planned for the pizzeria in the coming months.

To capitalize on their location, plans for renovating the area in the back of the restaurant, and adding onto the deck, may start as the weather warms up. Plans for the yard include park benches, fire pits, lighting, and an area for live music, to make it an attraction for families on the trail. The Whitesells and Beauchamps are also working on additional offerings inside the pizzeria by utilizing the current bar, but enlarging it somewhat for their beer and wine selection. Because of the location, they have requested a liquor license and have plans to partner with Westfield’s 1205 Distillery for a unique cocktail menu to complement the food offerings. Curt is looking forward to expanding on the standard franchise menu, with more glutenfree dairy-free options. “Greek’s already has a gluten-free crust that is just delicious,” Curt says. “It’s more like a cracker, rather than having a chewy texture like a cauliflower crust.”

“We’re excited about having the Midland Trace Trail running right behind our restaurant and the potential of Grand Junction Plaza,” Bob says. “We’re just poised A gluten-free pasta and more dietary offerings are also in the planning stages. for greatness there.” However, one immediate change that 6 / WESTFIELD MAGAZINE / MARCH 2021 / WestfieldMag.com

customers will see is that the dining room, which has been closed due to the pandemic, has reopened safely. “We’re doing a bunch of dine-in specials, and just look forward to inviting the citizens of Westfield back to check us out,” Curt says. “We’re just excited to bring more people to downtown Westfield.” To take a look at what Greek’s Pizzeria has to offer, visit their website at eatgreeks. com. BIG DOG’S SMOKEHOUSE BBQ LOCAL BARBECUE JOINT IS A FAMILY AFFAIR

Cheryl Faulkner says. “Lots of business comes from White River Campground just down the road. People like to come in for a meal after sledding. We got the idea for the restaurant because one day after church my husband said, ‘We need a barbecue place here.’ We are now in our tenth year.”

Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Jason Graves

S

ituated in a rustic building that dates back to 1865, Big Dog’s Smokehouse BBQ looks just like a barbecue joint should. Owned by Chris and Cheryl Faulkner, the restaurant is crammed full of vintage signs and memorabilia, hanging on the walls and from the ceiling. All of the couple’s five children have pitched in at one time or another to make the eatery a favorite destination for the surrounding area. “We are a kind of crossroads here for Noblesville, Carmel, Kokomo and Tipton,”

Chris’s interest in barbecue dates back several years and is actually intertwined with his career as a football player. Although he’s originally from the local area and became known as “Big Dog” when he attended Hamilton Heights schools, his family had a vacation home in Florida. He enrolled at the University of Florida and played football for the Gators. Through friendships with his teammates and their families, he was introduced to the barbecue culture so popular in the south. After college he was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys and spent six years in the National Football League, playing for the Rams, Chargers and Buccaneers. While he was in Dallas he learned to cook beef brisket, and later on while playing in California, he met Cheryl. “I was a Rams cheerleader and we weren’t allowed to date the football players,” she says. “So after three months we got married. 14 / MARCH 2021

Right after we were married, we had the opportunity to be on the ‘Newlywed Game’ television show. The emcee, Bob Eubanks, told us that if we hammed it up, he’d ask us back. We ended up winning. Chris always wanted a big family and he has roots here. After the NFL, we moved back to raise our family. We have lived here 33 years now and our children are aged 35 to 25. Our youngest, Ciara, was adopted from Russia.” The restaurant’s specialty is the beef brisket Chris learned to make while playing for the Cowboys, along with their baby back ribs. Depending on whether it’s a sandwich or a platter, and the number of sides chosen, the brisket ranges in price from $7.99 to $14.99. The baby back ribs range from $16.49 to $17.99. Sides include traditional barbecue fare such as mac and cheese, smokehouse baked beans, green beans, potato salad, coleslaw and corn bread. Other big sellers are the pulled pork, smoked sausage and chicken on the bone, which can range from a fourth of a chicken all the way to the whole bird. Specialty sandwiches created by the couple’s son Conner are also extremely popular. The Triple Dog Dare is a three-meat sandwich consisting of brisket, sausage and pork for $7.49. The Southern Comfort, priced

at $8.99, is a pork sandwich topped with coleslaw, french fries and ranch dressing. Conner’s BBQ Nachos, at $10.99, are a big crowd pleaser. There are also several dessert options to choose from, such as S’mores at the Table for $5.99, a $3.99 Root Beer Float, and the St. Louis Gooey Butter Cake for $2.99. “I love working together with the family and we are sort of a tag team,” Faulkner says. “Ciara does the website and accounting, and made the menu design a reality. I’ve got the creative ideas and she makes it happen. Conner learned to barbecue from his dad

and he comes up with great menu ideas. We try them out as specials and people start asking for them.” Faulkner adds that she and Ciara work together for catered events like weddings, graduations, open houses and birthday parties. “Barbecue is such a comfort food and a great to-go option,” she says. “Now that my kids are grown it is a blessing and an honor to serve the community. The community has been outstanding in the love and support they have shown us.”

Current hours for COVID-safe indoor seating are Tue. through Thu. 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Fri. and Sat. 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Closing time is dependent on weather during winter months. As the weather gets warmer and daylight savings time begins, hours of operation will lengthen, and patio seating, which is dog friendly, will open up. DoorDash delivery is also available. Big Dog’s Smokehouse BBQ is located at 29 East Jackson Street in Cicero. For more info, visit BDSmokeHouse.com or call 317-8005430. For catering, call 765-860-0852 or 765-480-6274.

NOBLESVILLE COUPLE OPERATES LOCAL SIGN GYPSIES FRANCHISE then we come back to take it down. It’s no work for the customer.”

Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided

Stacie Vetor, co-owner of Sign Gypsies Noblesville, says she likes to keep things simple. This has helped her business flourish at a time when everyone is looking for more ways to simplify their life. “My husband Nick and I started Sign Gypsies in May 2020,” Vetor says. “We take care of everything for you when it comes to great signs. Our territory was previously owned by Sign Gypsies Zionsville. With COVID-19, business greatly increased for the Zionsville team, and they were ready to hand off a section of their business. We were honored to pick up our own community, as well as add Cicero, Arcadia, Atlanta and Tipton to our franchise.” The Sign Gypsies corporate office is headquartered in Texas.

Sign Gypsies Noblesville has a variety of sign options. “We can do signs for any occasion,” Vetor says. “We offer signs for large and small yards. If there is grass, we can make a sign work for you.” Vetor notes that she and Nick have a special rapport with their customers. “We have amazing customers,” Vetor says. “There is nothing better for a small-business owner to have than happy customers. 90% of our business is birthday signs for children, ordered by their parents. This would be fun at any time of life, but seems to be even more special during a difficult pandemic that is restricting typical birthdays and kids’ sleepovers.”

“Sign Gypsies territory owners are franchisees,” Vetor says. “We rent our signs to customers for any type of celebration - birthdays, Vetor says she and Nick enjoy running Sign Gypsies Noblesville. retirements, sporting events, graduations, welcoming a new baby, etcetera. Despite their busy schedules, Vetor says she and Nick still find time to have fun with their family. “I have a home-based business that I continue to run alongside Sign Gypsies,” Vetor says. “Nick is very involved in our family business, but he has a full-time career outside the home. We are a family of six. Our son Ryan is an eighth-grader at Noblesville East Middle School. Our triplet daughters, Allie, Norah and Olivia, are fifthgraders at Stony Creek Elementary.” Vetor says she and her family love Noblesville, and helping the community. KIDZONE PARTY RENTALS LOCAL EVENT RENTAL COMPANY SPECIALIZES IN FUN

Writer / Renee Larr Photography Provided

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the way we all live our day-to-day lives. Children’s birthday parties and other large events have been cancelled, and with this came a decline in business for KidZone Party Rentals. “We’re a large-event rental company,” says Nathan Suddarth, chief entertainment officer. “We provide several different activities, inflatables, water slides, arcade games and rock walls for corporate events, birthday parties and church events. That’s what we do.” Suddarth recently moved the business from Noblesville to Westfield. “We relocated to Westfield to have a larger location, and to be closer to U.S. 31 and State Road 32,” Suddarth says. “We moved in June of 2018. Then COVID came along and everything changed.” Business dropped dramatically for KidZone with cancellations of large events. “It’s been very difficult for us,” Suddarth says. “Our 2020 projected income was down 76% overall. We were affected tremendously by the lack of corporate events, school events and church events. However, our backyard party season was very busy with graduations, small weddings and birthday parties. Even those events didn’t change the

fact that we were down.” With the business relying on large events, Suddarth couldn’t do much to pivot. “We just tried to hang on,” Suddarth says. “I pivoted and started a few other businesses that aren’t related to party rentals. Essentially, we were shut down.” Suddarth is hopeful the spring weather will help business increase. “We’re starting to get some orders for spring and for summer, which is positive,” he says. “I started to see a trend that’s picking up, but I don’t think it’s going to be a year like we had in 2019.” Along with outdoor activities like water slides, KidZone offers inside activities as well. “If you think of a big school carnival, that’s what we do,” Suddarth says. “We have entertainers like balloon twisters, face painters, airbrush tattoo artists and caricature artists. Those can all be inside.” Cleaning has become a bigger priority than ever for the business. “We’re using a product called MonoFoil,” Suddarth says. “It’s a nanotechnology that continues to kill germs and viruses. It’s one of the very first EPA-approved COVID killers. It continues to kill on contact. We spray everything down with it and we feel all 18 / MARCH 2021

feel like you’re walking sideways.”

KidZone added new attractions during 2020 that didn’t get much use through the previous year.

Suddarth and his staff are ready for day-today life to get back to normal.

HEART AND SOUL FREE CLINIC SERVICES UNINSURED AND UNDERINSURED LOCALS Writer / Renee Larr Photographer / Jason Graves

Heart and Soul Free Clinic in Westfield provides high-quality health care to uninsured or underinsured residents, regardless of their social, cultural or economic status. The clinic was founded in 2009. In 2020 the clinic expanded its services by offering both women’s health services and mental health services. “Both of those areas were things we felt individuals who are uninsured and frequently low income didn’t have access to,” says Lisa Kreag, executive director. “Often patients end up having to pay out of pocket for mental health services. It can range from $50 to $150 per session, and if you don’t have disposable income that can be very hard for a family to manage.”

Also, we take it to Carmel United Methodist Church once a month when Gleaners Food Bank is there. The concept of it is a one-stop shop for people, so they don’t have to travel all over the place.”

“Our budget is 100% through grants, fundraisers and donors,” Kreag adds. “Fundraising opportunities are extremely important to us. That is the only way we’re able to continue providing these services.”

The mobile unit is meant to help individuals with transportation issues.

“We’re always looking for volunteers in the medical field,” Kreag says. “Doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners, dentists and dental assistants are always needed. If they speak Spanish, that’s always a plus. We always have a Spanish interpreter on hand.”

“We try to make all our services as accessible to as many people as we can,” Kreag says.

The clinic offers services in the evenings and on weekends. Mental illness and anxiety have increased in 2020, due in large part to the pandemic. “All our services are provided by volunteers,” Kreag says. “We’re not open for the same “We provide six sessions to individuals hours as a regular doctor’s office. COLON CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

MISCONCEPTIONS AND WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW Writer / Dr. Bryan Holcomb, Colon & Rectal Surgeon at IU Health North Hospital

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. According to the American Cancer Society, colon cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men and women in the United States. Misconceptions about colon and rectal cancers can be detrimental to your health. Here are five misconceptions about colon cancer:

COLON CANCER ONLY HAPPENS TO MEN. For many years, colon cancer has been viewed as a “man’s cancer,” when, both men and women have about a 4% risk of developing colon cancer. Age and personal and/or family history of colon cancer are much larger risk factors than gender.

COLON CANCER HAS CLEAR SYMPTOMS. Changes in stool, rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, constant abdominal discomfort and weakness or fatigue can all be signs of colorectal cancer. However, many people with colon cancer do not experience any symptoms in the early stages of their cancer. Thus, it is better to get screened according to your primary physician and the health guidelines for your age, rather than wait for symptoms to occur.

ALL POLYPS ARE CANCEROUS. Colon cancer usually begins as a small growth known as a polyp. Polyps can be found early during a colonoscopy and can be removed. Not all polyps are cancerous, but it is still a good idea to get screened for colon cancer regularly. You can also lower your risk of colon cancer by staying active, avoiding smoking, limiting alcohol consumption, keeping a healthy weight and eating a balanced diet.

Young people do not have to worry about colon cancer. Recently, the American Cancer Society changed their recommended COLONOSCOPIES AREN’T THE ONLY screening age for colon cancer to 45 years old. This change in WAY TO SCREEN FOR COLON CANCER. guidelines is due to a sharp rise in the instances of young adults being While colonoscopies are one way to be screened for colon cancer, diagnosed with colon cancer. While it is rare for individuals under the they are not the only way. Stool tests and virtual colonoscopies age of 50 to develop colon cancer, it is possible. SHARED VISION WESTFIELD LEADERS ENDEAVORING TO CREATE A VIBRANT DOWNTOWN “I remember when it was a cornfield, a Shell gas station and a Hardee’s,” says McGuckin, community collaborator with Old Town Design Group. “I’ve been around to see quite a few changes.” Through the years the town, now a city, has evolved dramatically, and local leaders and officials have maintained a vision of creating a vibrant downtown that would not only make community members proud, but also attract visitors from near and far. Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided

Rebecca McGuckin, a Westfield High School graduate, recalls when Westfield was little more than a dot on the map.

“For years it’s been a bit like putting together a puzzle, and now the pieces are fitting together to make for this beautiful new downtown,” says Westfield Mayor Andy Cook.

GRAND JUNCTION PLAZA The construction of Grand Junction Plaza is the result of a longtime vision among local leaders. Jeremy Lollar, director of public works, calls it their keystone project - one that started more than a decade ago and is scheduled for completion in December of 2021. “It’s been the emphasis of driving our vibrant downtown development,” Lollar says. With amenities like an amphitheater, green space, playground and ice-skating rink, it’s bound to be a hot spot for every demographic. “The same residents have continued to invest tireless hours behind the scenes in

faithfully putting forth the vision [for the Plaza],” McGuckin says. “We’re excited to be invited into the process and step into this space that has vitality, energy and enthusiasm around it.”

INFRASTRUCTURE One challenge facing the area is getting around and through downtown. That’s why city leaders wanted to be sure that part of the puzzle includes accessibility and safety. According to Lollar, the challenge associated with downtown is the capacity of State Road 32 as well as the functionality of the signal at Union Street and State Road 32. A number of years ago, the Public Works Department started planning on improvements needed for State Road 32, and assessing how such improvements

would affect the community. In 2018 the city entered into a project funded at both the local and state levels, to widen State Road 32 through downtown Westfield in order to handle the volume of future traffic. Specifically, the project is focused on the WestfieldMag.com / MARCH 2021 / WESTFIELD MAGAZINE / 31

area between Poplar Street and East Street, and will turn this area into a four-lane section with appropriate turn lanes and a divided median. “That’s our primary focus on how we are

improving the flow of traffic downtown,” Lollar says.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

In conjunction with that project, the city is adding a new road alignment - a Jersey Street extension from Union Street, which will head east and tie into the roundabout at East Street. Travelers will have another outlet to head east, aside from the traffic signal at Union Street and State Road 32, improving traffic flow.

City officials always planned for business to grow around the Plaza. This includes Park Street restaurants, the YMCA, Westfield Wine Vault, Root 31, RIVET Coffee among others. The largest development is the newly expanded Union Square project, which will include residential and commercial development in the city’s downtown area to build retail shops, restaurants, apartments and condominiums.

One of the city’s primary areas of focus regarding State Road 32, and the reason the preferred alignment was selected, was to ensure a safe, walkable downtown for years to come. “That gets tricky when you’re looking at a four- or five-lane boulevard section through the heart of your city, so the roundabouts are one of those primary drivers,” Lollar says.

“We like the variety of opportunities for residents, whether it’s apartments or townhomes, as well as making space for more retail and office,” McGuckin says. Lollar calls the Union Square project a fun development that may improve over time.

“There is discussion now about a potential expansion to include some property east of The city will include two roundabouts in the Grand Junction Plaza,” he says. downtown area, in addition to a mid-block crossing. The amended plan includes additional “It was certainly one of the design elements we had been considering all along - how to get people from the north to the south side of 32 - and I think we’ve done a really nice job given our condition, to be able to accommodate some safe crossings,” Lollar says.

surface parking east of the Plaza, a proposed parking garage and town home development. When the initial Union Square design was proposed, the mayor asked Old Town Design Group to seek feedback from residents, the City Council, and small-business owners. McGuckin recalls attending a Chamber meeting in

32 / WESTFIELD MAGAZINE / MARCH 2021 / WestfieldMag.com

2019 when she asked members to use one adjective to describe their wish for downtown. “I heard words like ‘vital,’ ‘joyful,’ and ‘energetic,’ but mostly I heard ‘parking, parking, parking,’” McGuckin says with a laugh. “It’s fun to be downtown and support local businesses, but you don’t want to spend a bunch of time looking for a parking space.”

PRESERVING THE PAST WHILE BUILDING THE FUTURE McGuckin calls Hamilton County an exciting place to live, due to the local government and community residents who care about downtown. “I think Westfield has a great sense of pride and identity in its roots,” she says. Joshua Biggs, the community preservation specialist at Indiana Landmarks’ central regional office, calls Westfield a vibrant town-turned-city that has rich and abundant local history. “Westfield is growing very quickly, and there are some transformative development projects, either in the works or that have been recently completed,” Biggs says. “As is often the case, communities across the country are grappling with how to balance

historic preservation, and growth and new construction. Westfield is no different.” Several historic buildings in Westfield are listed in the National Register of Historic Places, as part of the Westfield Historic District. Biggs’ organization is working with locals on minimization and mitigation efforts regarding affected historic buildings, especially those in jeopardy of being torn down in order to widen State Road 32 through downtown. “Cities big and small across America have realized the value of preserving historic buildings and have gone to great lengths to incentivize their adaptive reuse,” Biggs says. “We’re all the better for it, because a beautifully preserved downtown creates places where people want to live, work and visit. Who doesn’t love a beautiful and revitalized downtown?” Biggs notes that in addition to valuing history, downtown preservation fosters placemaking, livability and walkability. It also celebrates historic architecture and creates unique spaces to attract local businesses. “As Westfield continues to grow and develop, it’s imperative for the city to retain and support the downtown,” Biggs says. McGuckin feels the city’s recent projects will serve to enhance Westfield for businesses, residents and visitors alike. “I feel like this is a golden era in downtown Westfield,” she says. “It really is special.” WestfieldMag.com / MARCH 2021 / WESTFIELD MAGAZINE / 33

The term “feis” refers to an Irish dance competition. In 2020 Terrence also achieved a milestone. He competed as a soloist at the Oireachtas event in Indianapolis. “I didn’t exactly get the position I wanted but I’m still happy that I got to dance this year, especially with COVID,” he says. The Oireachtas is held annually, and it is a significant feis event. “That’s where you qualify for nationals, and ultimately one day, if you’re hopeful, for the world championships,” Catherine says. The two have been dancing since a rather

Because of all the travel, both kids have made friends all over the Midwest. “You’re learning steps along with amazing people who you are fortunate and thankful to call your friends,” Mary says. “Working hard for an award feels so successful.” The siblings have high aspirations and are wise beyond their years. The lessons they have learned do not only apply to dance. “It’s taught me resilience and how to take the not-good results humbly,” Mary says. Terrence says the endeavor has taught him to lower his expectations. “Don’t expect a certain result,” he says. “At my first Oireachtas in 2019, I thought I would be top 10, and I ended up getting nineteenth. I was devastated, but I thought

to myself, ‘Next year.’ ” Mary and Terrence both have big dreams, and at ages 14 and 12, the two siblings are already accomplished youngsters. However, they do dip their toes in other waters. “I am in the show choir at Westfield Middle School, and I’m also in the Indianapolis Children’s Choir downtown,” Mary says. For Terrence, a career in comedy seems to be on the horizon, or a career in law, writing or teaching. As far as their dance goals, Terrence would like to compete at the world championships, and Mary would like to dance at the Oireachtas as a soloist. Wherever their dance pursuits take them, it certainly seems that these funny, driven and charismatic kids will go far in life.
