When Janelle Campbell, Mortgage Loan Officer at Community First Bank of Indiana, grew up in Kokomo, her family banked at a local bank. There, lending decisions were made based on close relationships that had been established with customers. Now a resident of Westfield, she finds that people today still desire to have dealings with a local institution that provides opportunities to develop a relationship with their banker. “People want more than just an online relationship, they want to hear a voice,” Campbell says. “They still want to come in and tell their story, especially when a computer has told them ‘no.’”
“In 2019, the bank will be involved with Student Impact of Westfield’s Capital Campaign, ‘Raise the Rock,’” she says. “We supported Westfield High School’s Dance Marathon held in February, which raised money for Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. We are also involved in the school’s Shark Tank program. In addition, we have contributed Spring Cleaning Baskets to Open Doors of Westfield. We also have Casual for a Cause days when employees donate $5 in exchange for dressing casually. The money is then given to a local charity.” As someone who is raising a family and involved with the community, Campbell is impressed with Community First’s commitment to the area.
Campbell recently transferred from the Noblesville branch to Community First’s new site in Westfield, located at the corner of State Road 32 and Oak Ridge Road. With the doors officially open for business as of April 8, she now can work in, and with, the same community where she has resided for the past 15 years.
She has a commitment to making a difference. One of the organizations she is deeply involved in is Westfield Youth Assistance Program (WYAP) which connects students and families of Westfield Washington Schools to various services offered when intervention is needed due to challenging life circumstances or mentors are needed. Currently, she is the WYAP Board of Directors President.
Although Community First Bank is a new presence in Westfield, it has a 16-year history in Indiana. In 2003, it opened its first branch in Kokomo, eventually adding two additional sites. It expanded into Hamilton County in 2015 with a branch in Noblesville. This year, it opened its first Westfield location with plans for a second branch in the Junction Crossing area at 161st Street and Spring Mill Road to open this summer.
“Northern Hamilton County is growing and thriving,” Campbell says. “It’s an area where residents want to do business with a local bank. Community First Bank is a full-service bank offering investment and commercial services. My side of the business is mortgage loans. We have a wonderful program called Community Heroes. We can direct individuals with careers that serve the community, such as school employees, doctors, nurses, 2 / WESTFIELD MAGAZINE / MAY 2019 / WestfieldMag.com
firefighters and first responders, to a loan program geared to fit their needs.” “The great thing about community banking is that I have customers that call me to help solve their problems,” Campbell adds. “They are trusting me to get them in the right mortgage for their home.” The Westfield branch is hosting two upcoming events. On May 21, the Grand Opening will be held, complete with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. “Make a Splash in Westfield” will be a fun-filled day featuring activities for all ages as well as the opportunity to see local celebrities participating in a dunk tank. Beginning at 11 am, this June 14 community day will last until 6 pm. The Oak Ridge Branch of Community First Bank of Indiana is located at 707 East State Road 32. You can reach Janelle Campbell at her office at 317-399-7496 or at jcampbell@ cfbindiana.com for more information.

POPULAR LOCAL DUO NEARS 25 YEARS OF PERFORMING IN HAMILTON COUNTY & BEYOND Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing . Photographer / Amy Payne
efore Lisa Rae Hodge had celebrated her 21st birthday, she was a huge fan of Dave Edmonds when he played with the band The Oliver Syndrome. It was the spring of 1995. Hodge, who was working several jobs at the time, approached Edmonds after a concert and told him that she would love to sing with him sometime. “I can harmonize and play tambourine,” she offered. Though she was auditioning for another band, she knew she’d prefer to play with Edmonds if given the chance. They became fast friends, despite being polar opposites. As it turns out, their yin-yang dynamic played out beautifully on stage. “He’s the introvert. I’m the extrovert. He’s the mechanic. I’m the driver. He’s the musician. I’m the entertainer,” Hodge says. “Or as Dave’s son tells me, ‘Dad plays the guitar. You shake your booty.’” When they first started, Edmonds sported dreads, Hodge had a perm, and they collaborated on a part-time basis. Before long, however, they were receiving so many requests for gigs that Edmonds left The Oliver Syndrome, Hodge quit her jobs, and “Dave & Rae” transitioned to full-time performers. Initially, the paired played primarily bars and for a solid decade spent a ton of time in Bloomington playing at places like the Bluebird Nightclub. In fact, one night they broke a 21-year record at the Bluebird for number of attendees — somewhere around 1,500. “People were lined up around the block,” Hodge says. “I remember crying on the way home, I was so overwhelmed by the support.”
Edmonds (no relation to Babyface though he fields that question frequently) started playing guitar at age 12, joined some neighborhood bands and was playing regularly by age 18.
“He reads Aristotle while I devour whatever’s on the best-seller list,” says Hodge with a chuckle.
Performing folk, funk, pop, rock, dance, country and sing-a-longs, Dave & Rae are In his free time, Edmonds, who used to masterful at entertaining the crowd with play Mozart on his piano, enjoys riding his everything from Janis Joplin and the Beatles motorcycle and, above all, loves being a to Bruno Mars and Taylor Swift. They take dad to his son Oliver. Hodge, who has been audience requests and belt out staples such married to her husband, Bobby, since 1997, as “Sweet Caroline,” “Me & Bobby McGee,” enjoys yoga and golf. Both Edmonds and “Oh, What a Night,” “Brown Eyed Girl” and Hodge like to read though their interests vary. “Jack & Diane.”
Hodge has gravitated toward music ever since she was a little girl, singing her first song in church at 19 months old. “Mom said the words were not discernible but that my pitch and tune were spot on,” Hodge says. 8 / WESTFIELD MAGAZINE / MAY 2019 / WestfieldMag.com
Though they once dominated the bar scene, now they primarily play weddings, birthday parties and bar mitzvahs. “At one point, we were doing 40 to 50 weddings a year,” Hodge says. “Now, we’re doing those people’s 40th and 50th birthday parties and their children’s graduations. As we grow older, our fans are growing older with us.”

They also play at corporate events and do a lot for the Indiana Pacers such as FanJam, which celebrates the kickoff of the new season. “We’ve been playing there since it was Market Square Arena,” Hodge says. “We played in the Reggie Miller era and now are playing in the Victor Oladipo and Myles Turner era.” Though they like mixing up their venues, weddings are always special. “They booked us because they’ve shared a memory with us, not because they found us in a phone book,” Hodge says. In fact, this spring they flew out to Arizona to sing at a wedding of someone from their Bloomington Bluebird days. “They wanted Dave & Rae’s music on their special day,” Hodge says. “I love putting a smile on people’s faces.” As the duo approaches their 25th anniversary as a band, their calendar is still full. Summer months are especially busy with outdoor parties and festivals. The band is thankful for their longevity in this industry, and they have no plans to retire. “We’ll keep doing this for as long as people keep coming to see us,” Hodge says. “We’ll be in wheelchairs and walkers still performing.”

Several Hoosier kids recently enjoyed the first-ever Indiana State Ninja Games, which was held in Westfield at the IMMI Conference Center on Feb. 24. The event included three different 90-minute sessions, with more than 100 children, representing 15 gyms from around Indiana. It was truly a unique event to showcase some impressive young athletes.
Megan Noel, Ph.D., director of Marketing and Public Relations for NinjaZone, located inside the Grand Park Events Center at 19000 Grand Park Boulevard, Westfield, says the Ninja Games are the competition arm of NinjaZone. NinjaZone is an alternative sport, where children learn foundational athletic and movement skills focused around coordination, conditioning, core strength and, most importantly, confidence. WestfieldMag.com / MAY 2019 / WESTFIELD MAGAZINE / 11
“Children in participating in Ninja Sport with NinjaZone are enrolled in weekly classes that hone these skills, and the Ninja Games is where they put those skills to the test,” Noel says. Noel says that The Indiana State Ninja Games were a huge success. “We look forward to holding them annually, in compliment to the invitational games our gyms are holding at the local levels,” Noel adds. “With more than 300
NinjaZone gyms located in 43 states, in eight countries, on four continents, we’re looking forward to holding national, and even potentially, international Ninja Games in the coming year, in partnership with our sister organization Ninja Sports International.” Westfield kids and children from surrounding areas involved in the games can train at The NinjaZone gym in Westfield. It’s a fitness gym for kids with state-of-the-art equipment and fullytrained coaches and trainers. “As the excitement for Ninja Sports continues to grow, the demand was there to do an even larger event,” Noel says. “Because of the well-roundedness of the sport, which incorporates athletic and character pillars, both parents and kids are excited to participate. As the number of NinjaZone gyms in Indiana continues to grow, the next State Ninja Games will be even bigger and better.” The recent Indiana State Ninja Games hit athlete registration capacity in just under two weeks after opening. Each of the 90-minute sessions brought in at least 150 spectators, bringing total numbers of more than 500. “Each of the 15 Indiana NinjaZone gyms will be scheduling and running invitational Ninja Games periodically throughout the year,” Noel says. “In some cases, such as here in Westfield, several gyms will combine for these events. Often the Wright’s Fundamentals locations in Greenwood, Center Grove and Westfield will combine with the NinjaZone Academy locations in Grand Park and Geist for local Ninja Games, for example. We’re in the planning stages of the next state-wide event, looking at dates for the fall.” The recent state games were part of the NinjaCon weekend. During the event, children ran through several obstacle courses designed to test skill, speed, determination and sportsmanship. The games included The Lil’ Ninjas, ages three to five, and progressed up through colored headband levels. 12 / WESTFIELD MAGAZINE / MAY 2019 / WestfieldMag.com
Spectators at the NinjaGames saw everything from a simple forward roll to impressive mid-air twists and flops. NinjaZone was created by longtime gym owner Casey Wright. She started the first NinjaZone in 2015 in Carmel. The NinjaZone licensing program now has more than 300 locations in 43 states, in eight countries on four continents. Casey Wright, the NinjaZone CEO, was just awarded the U.S. Small Business Administration’s award for Small Business Person of the Year for Indiana. Wright was also a 2018 Indianapolis Business Journal 40 Under 40 honoree. She established the NinjaZone licensing program in 2015. Visit theninjazone.com for more information.

Westfield resident Jamie Degler has always had a love for reading. As a child, her favorite activities involved anything that included books. Later, she taught elementary school, volunteered in her own four children’s school library and worked for a short time for Scholastic Book Fairs. Each summer she and her family vacationed in upper Michigan where one of the highlights of the trip would be visiting a small independent bookstore. Although it was a dream of hers to own a similar book store, it was never really a declared goal to do so. Degler thought if she ever did, her first choice to locate a shop would be in a houselike setting in order to achieve a cozy intimate atmosphere. For several years she eyed a building at 149 North Walnut street that was being used as a dress shop. When it became available to rent, her desire started to become a reality and in September of 2018, Turn the Page Books and Gifts opened its doors to the community. “Once I saw that the house was for rent, I felt it was an opportunity to go for it,” Degler says. “I knew if I didn’t, I’d always wonder what could have been. After I made the commitment everything else just unfolded. I feel lucky and blessed.” Although the little white house looks small from the street, it holds a vast number of books and readingrelated goods as well as gifts. Degler commissioned custom bookshelves designed to make the most out of the space. There is room enough for 4,500 books which span more than 23 different genres such as children’s, classics, autobiographies and cooking. “I can’t be any happier about the space,” Degler says. “Everyone that has come into the store has been so complimentary. When they walk through the door, they seem pleasantly surprised and have commented on how 16 / WESTFIELD MAGAZINE / MAY 2019 / WestfieldMag.com

impressed they are with the selection of wonderfully varied books.” The heart of the bookstore is a living room area that serves as a gathering place for several different events. Degler’s favorite activity happens to be book club but she hosts other meetings. A girl scout troop has visited and a knitting group called Sticks and Strings gets together once a month. Every Saturday at 11 a.m. there is a Children’s Storytime for elementary school-aged students. Authors are also scheduled to deliver talks. “I feel that small bookstores are on the rise,” Degler says. “People want to have a conversation about what they have read. They want suggestions about what to read next. They enjoy the experience of a friendly and warm setting.” Upon request, Degler will order books for patrons. She has multiple contacts with several book vendors. She finds that people like to support local businesses and enjoy coming back into the store to pick up their purchases. “It is an absolute pleasure to be here every day we are open,” Degler says. “I’m happy that Turn the Page Bookstore can be a part of downtown Westfield.”

“I can’t do much there because of my age, but I carry animals to the operation table and I calm them down once they wake up,” she says. She loves helping the nervous animals get settled and ready for whatever care they need. Gonzalez hopes to one day open her own clinic or rescue shelter. “I would love to have it eventually grow into helping all kinds of animals, big and small,” she says. “There are a lot of things people can do to help animals. Some of those things are, for instance, if you see a wild animal, don’t try to approach it. If it is in an unsafe area, (and this part goes for all animals), then call local animal control. They will come and get it, relocate it, and if the animal is injured, get it the veterinarian care it needs.” Gonzalez says that another thing people can do to help animals is “to avoid going to zoos, aquariums and other places like that, because in most of those places, the animals are in too small of an enclosure, are not properly cared for, are abused and taken from the wild, even though they have no health problems. “It is because of all of this, a lot of them (the animals), die at a much younger age than they would in the wild,” she adds. “Heavy and deep research should be done on these places before attending, not just going to their website, but also reading reviews, news articles and more.” Gonzalez’ favorite subject in school is Science, which will help her with her future academic plans. THE ROAD TO INDY
T WO INDYCAR MOTORSPORTS TEAMS CALL WESTFIELD HOME
Writer / Christopher DeHarde Photography Provided by Amy Payne & Photos @ Indianapolis Motor Speedway, LLC Photography
Miller Vinatieri Motorsports and Jay Howard Driver Development have a right to claim themselves as the fastest-growing businesses in Westfield. After all, how many other race teams are based in one of Indianapolis’s fastestgrowing suburbs? Dr. Jack Miller co-owns MVM with Indianapolis Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri and has been a Westfield resident since he first raced in the Indianapolis 500 in 1997. Location was critical for the man known as The Racing Dentist for his work outside racing, and Westfield was a perfect place for his race team because getting to work takes nothing more than 30 seconds to walk from his back door to the shop. “When I raced Indy cars, I built a pretty big building to store mobile dental clinics and our coaches and equipment like that,” Miller says. “So, when we decided to start the karting team when Jack (son) was three, we didn’t have to go rent a place because we already had a building. “I’ve lived there and I like to support Westfield, I have businesses in Westfield and properties and it was a perfect opportunity. I didn’t have to invest and build another building somewhere else.” Jay Howard still races in the Indianapolis 500 and wanted to go his own direction for locating his team’s race shop. Many teams are based within a short drive of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and in other suburbs such as Brownsburg, but Howard found a great location in Westfield for his race shop. “I had a bit of an idea of the general area where I wanted to be, and I’m literally 11 minutes to my home so that was good,” Howard says. “It’s coincidental that the building came up in the exact spot I wanted to be. If that building hadn’t come available maybe we would’ve moved somewhere else in Westfield, but the goal all along was to be in the city of Westfield. “We’ve got a great location, all the building that’s going on around us is fantastic and if anyone can add a few more lunch spots we would appreciate that. We love the area, it’s safe, I just can’t say enough good about it.”
IndyCar Driver Jay Howard
Both teams have embraced the Westfield community wholeheartedly and the community has done likewise. “I think we get some hometown cheering,” Miller says. “Jack is an Eagle Scout in his scout troop, they follow him on all of his social media and we get a lot of support from the residents in the city. It’s still small enough where a lot of people know each other.” “The community has super nice people, all the boys that work at the shop have gotten to know the locals,” Howard adds. “It’s been good, really receptive, good people, I really appreciate the Westfield Police Department, they keep coming by and keep an eye on everything so it’s been really good.” Both teams are in the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship, the bottom step on the Road to Indy development ladder system for the NTT IndyCar Series. Both teams had two races during the March 8-10 weekend on the streets of St. Petersburg supporting the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. Miller’s team raced with two cars, one for Dr. Jack’s son Jack William Miller and the other for Eduardo Barrichello, son of former Formula One driver and Indianapolis 500 competitor Rubens Barrichello.

Howard’s team has three cars entered for British racer Matt Round-Garrido, Louisiana native Christian Bogle and Denmark racer Christian Rasmussen. Rasmussen nearly brought home a win for Howard’s team in race two before an incident on the last lap dropped him from second to 15th place. Race leader Darren Keane spun in front of Rasmussen and clipped Rasmussen’s right rear tire, sending the Dane into a spin and damaging the rear wing and right rear suspension.

HEADACHE OR MIGRAINE?
It can be difficult to tell if the pressure and pain in your head is stemming from a headache or a migraine, but the important distinction can help you get faster relief or know when to seek medical attention. Dr. James Fesenmeier, neurologist at Indiana University Health, offers the following advice to help you spot the difference between a normal headache and a migraine. WHAT IS A HEADACHE? A headache is an unpleasant feeling of pressure, dull aching, throbbing or sharp pain in your head. The pain can range from mild to severe and can either slowly develop or come on at once. It may occur on both sides of the head or in one location. Some headaches last for several days and others last just an hour or less. WHAT IS A MIGRAINE? Different from a headache, a migraine can cause intense throbbing and severe pain, most of the time just on one side of the head. Migraines are normally accompanied by other symptoms, such as nausea, visual disturbances, lightheadedness, vomiting and extreme sensitivity to sound or light. The pain can be prolonged over hours or days making it difficult to perform daily tasks.
TREATMENT Most headaches can be treated with over-thecounter pain remedies, such as ibuprofen. Prevention is essential when it comes to migraines. Reducing stress, getting good sleep, taking certain medicines, and adding and/or eliminating foods and substances in your diet are all examples of preventative measures. Take note of how you feel and what symptoms you have before a migraine occurs to help identify what preventative measures you can implement. To be safe, consult your doctor before making any changes to your normal routine.

If you think you’re having a stroke, call 9-1-1 and go to an emergency room right away. Do not try to drive yourself or a loved one to the hospital.
May is National Stroke Awareness Month: Know the Signs and Symptoms A sudden severe headache with no obvious cause can be a manifestation of a type of stroke associated with bleeding in the brain. These can be called “thunderclap headaches,” and if you’ve never experienced this kind of headache previously, you should be evaluated urgently to rule out bleeding. However, the more common type of stroke, known as ischemic strokes, is not usually associated with headache. Ischemic strokes are caused by lack of blood flow to part of the brain. Unfortunately because of the lack of pain, patients often delay coming to the hospital, which can prevent them from 30 / WESTFIELD MAGAZINE / MAY 2019 / WestfieldMag.com
