Christian Daly Is Making a Splash In the Pro Watercross Tour Writer / Josh Brown Photographer / Brian Brosmer
Maybe it does run in the family. Christian Daly can’t say for sure, but he knows one thing — he loves to race. Unlike his father Derek, a longtime IndyCar driver and Irish racing legend, and his older brother and IndyCar driver Conor, Christian doesn’t find his need for speed on land but on water instead.
Christian’s first race came last August at the P1 AquaX USA race in Whiting, Indiana. Daly finished second place for an impressive debut. Since then, Daly has been splashing his way through the circuit. That first race validated a feeling that he had from the beginning — he could do this and truly compete.
“I won’t say that I necessarily felt like a natural, but it really came quick to me,” Christian says. “Once I got on the jet ski, I felt the Christian’s journey to becoming a Pro Wabalance of it, how it turns, how to read the tercross driver happened about a year and a water. After that first race, I thought, ‘Why half ago. The 21-year old had always enjoyed don’t I keep doing this?’” riding jet skis, but everything changed when several friends mentioned that he should It Runs In the Family consider racing. “Several of my buddies race out on Morse Reservoir, and they said, ‘hey, you should come and try a race sometime,’” Christian says. “At the time I said no that I just enjoyed riding for fun. But I finally went to one of the races and immediately fell in love with it. I’ve been doing it ever since.”
Christian’s newest hobby comes as no surprise to his dad and brothers. The family knows all too well that desire to compete and be in the driver’s seat. With their racing background, it isn’t shocking to hear that the family fully supports Christian and enjoys watching him compete on the water. WestfieldMag.com / JULY 2018 / WESTFIELD MAGAZINE / 7
Perhaps the least surprised member of the family is Christian’s mother, Beth Boles. Believe it or not, Beth raced jet skis once upon a time as well. Christian’s mom raced stand-up jet skis for quite a while, and when she realized her son was developing a passion for the sport, she was ecstatic. “Obviously, when she heard that I was going to be doing this, she was super stoked and couldn’t wait to go to the races,” Christian says. “My family has been all for it, supporting my dreams and encouraging me to follow them. That has been really helpful and awesome to have that support.” You Built That? Pro Watercross is certainly much more than a hobby for Christian. Once he realized he was going to be racing full time, the 21-year old started looking into jet ski options. He decided to race in the Sport GP class, which requires a top-of-the-line jet ski. So,
Christian decided to build one himself. Last year, he and his dad spent countless hours in Derek’s garage, building the jet ski from the engine out — a process that is daunting to say the least. “There was tons and tons of custom work that went into this boat,” Christian says. “We put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into it. We painted it my favorite color — riviera blue.” The end result made it worth it for the father-son duo — a completely modified, triple-cylinder Kawasaki 1100. The custom-built jet ski tops out at 67.7 miles per hour. “Firing it up for the first time ever was exhilarating for me,” Christian says. “It has unbelievable acceleration and one of the best engines that you can get today. Knowing that I’m out there on this boat that my dad and I built together, winning races no less, has been a cool experience.” A Fearless Approach Like most drivers, Christian has had his ups and downs. In one race in Chicago early on in his career last year, Daly made a “rookie mistake” and got impatient trying to push for a lead before hitting a wave wrong. He was thrown straight up in the air before landing on the side railing of his jet ski. The wreck left him with a fractured fibula and cost him a trip to the World Finals, which he was planning to compete in. “That was a huge setback,” he says. “It was unfortunate. I wasn’t able to race in the World Finals and that was tough for me. But I knew I was going to come back even stronger.” It took a month of rehab and training before Christian could get back on the water. His first race back from the gruesome injury was the World 8 / WESTFIELD MAGAZINE / JULY 2018 / WestfieldMag.com
Championships in Naples, Fla. Daly finished third, proving to himself that he had overcome the injury. Despite the wreck, Christian continues to have a fearless approach on the water. He has learned when to take risks and when to stay the course. Like with anything else, practice makes perfect, though. Christian is a Carmel resident, but most weeks he can be seen practicing on Morse Reservoir in Noblesville. He practices at least twice a week on the lake, and sometimes more, in an effort to continue to grow and learn in a sport that is still quite new to him. Just Getting Started Christian has a full race schedule this year. He will compete in about 10 to 15 races throughout the season, all over the country and the world. His season doesn’t end in the summer, either. His biggest races down the road are at Lake Havasu for the World Finals in October and a race in Thailand in November. Locally, Daly has two main sponsors — Wolfies Grill and Farmers Insurance. He says it’s because of their support that he has been able to continue to pursue his dream and travel around the world doing it.
At Conner Prairie, you can go wherever your imagination takes you. With hundreds of acres to explore, including our newly reimagined River Crossing experience area, we’re igniting curiosity and inspiring guests to discover new lessons in the natural world that surrounds us.
As for the future, Christian doesn’t plan on stopping any time soon. Quite the opposite, he says he’s just getting started. Daly has high expectations as a racer and cementing his legacy in Pro Watercross, but for now, he’s simply enjoying life on the water. “This sport is my getaway,” Christian says. “It is an awesome experience, and the atmosphere each race is incredible. I obviously want to win a lot of races and championships in the future. But I want to be someone who makes a positive impact, too.” WestfieldMag.com / JULY 2018 / WESTFIELD MAGAZINE / 9

TUCKER AUTOMOTIVE GROUP IS REDEFINING THE CAR BUYING EXPERIENCE Writer / Lynda Hedberg Thies Photographer / Amy Payne
For most people, the process of buying a car can be a confusing and stressful experience that can leave consumers feeling frustrated with the entire process. Even in today’s marketplace with increased transparency,
online shopping and promises of building strong customer relationships, consumers are still subjected to phrases like “below invoice” and “best price guaranteed” and still many hidden fees show up on the invoice. If only there were a way to borrow the experience of someone in the industry, 10 / WESTFIELD MAGAZINE / JULY 2018 / WestfieldMag.com
who would put a fair price on a car, offer new tires, breaks and make the process so hassle free you could buy a car on your lunch break. It is reality for the Tucker Automotive Group, new to the automotive scene in Westfield. Ryan and Jeanne Tucker know all about the
ins and outs of car buying after spending 13 years in the car auction industry on the corporate side. A job promotion brought them to Westfield two years ago and they decided to stay when they fell out of love with the weekly travel of their job and fell in love with Westfield. They decided to open a dealership using the best practices they learned to create a consumer-focused experience. The Tucker Automotive Group opened their doors for business in February with a 17,000-plus square foot indoor showroom, no-haggle pricing and excellent customer service. “We will never pressure you into buying a vehicle from us, we will simply offer you the best shopping experience with the newest used cars around and let you decide if we have the right car for you,” Ryan says. They call this promise “The T.A.G. Difference” to clearly state that this means fewer headaches, better cars and strong peace of mind. This philosophy goes well beyond the clever tag line. Customers can expect to find the best Multi-Point Inspected PreOwned cars, trucks and SUV’s available in the area. They have vehicles for every budget from $5,000-$50,000. Ryan says their goals is “to make sure that you find the vehicle that meets your needs and fits your budget.” One of the ways that car buying has changed is that most people do their homework online before they ever drive to a dealership. Their interactive website displays current inventory in the showroom and allows any questions to go directly to the Tucker’s phones and computers for a quick response. Most people expect to deal with multiple people and spend hours sitting around waiting for them. Ryan is quick to add that “if a customer test drives a car with me they will be with me through the entire process, which makes the process streamlined, efficient and ensures that it is not a time-consuming process.” WestfieldMag.com / JULY 2018 / WESTFIELD MAGAZINE / 11

They also offer new tires and new brakes so that every customer has confidence in their new vehicle. They provide detail services before leaving the showroom, too. Welcome Back
Colts Coach Frank Reich Talks Faith, Hoosier Roots & Grand Park Sports Campus Writer / Josh Brown . Photography provided by Brian Brosmer & Indianapolis Colts
Frank Reich returns to the Colts after serving as quarterbacks coach in 2009 with Peyton Manning and Tony Dungy.
rank Reich’s coaching career has truly come full circle, and he couldn’t be happier. The new Head Coach of the Indianapolis Colts is right back where it all started for him. Reich began his career in 2006 with the Colts as an intern before working his way up to quarterbacks coach in 2009 alongside Colts legends Tony Dungy, Peyton Manning and Bill Polian. Those relationships, coupled with a resume that now includes a Super Bowl ring as the Offensive Coordinator with the Philadelphia Eagles last year, have helped Reich land a job that he says is a dream come true. In many ways, Reich is back home in Indianapolis. “If I could have written up a plan of what would be the ideal scenario, the ideal team and place, this was it,” Reich says.
“Indianapolis is where I got my coaching start. I came into the organization and got to work with guys like Peyton Manning, Tony Dungy, Jeff Saturday the list goes on, but these are great men. To get a chance to come back here now is pretty special.” The Reichs have ties to the Indy community, which has certainly made the reunion feel like a homecoming of sorts for the family. Two of Reich’s three daughters graduated high school in the area when he first started with the Colts in 2006 — his middle daughter from Hamilton Southeastern and his youngest daughter from Heritage Christian. “The Hoosier hospitality has been unbelievable,” Reich says. “This is like home to us. We have family in this area and developed close friendships from my first time here. I’m thankful for the opportunity to be back.” While Reich wasn’t the first choice for 16 / WESTFIELD MAGAZINE / JULY 2018 / WestfieldMag.com
the position, the Colts quickly realized he was the best fit. After the fallout with Josh McDaniels, several reports said Polian, Dungy and Manning personally reached out to Colts Owner Jim Irsay and General Manager Chris Ballard to endorse Reich for the head coaching position. Reich watched from afar and, despite his interest, did not make the first move in having his agent reach out to the Colts. Instead, he decided if it was meant to be that it would be. Looking back now, Reich says the endorsement of those Colts legends is humbling. “It really is humbling because those are some tremendous men, coaches and players,” Reich says. “In this business you just try to work hard and do your job. You work around a lot of great people and learn a lot from them. When people like that give you a vote of confidence, it means a lot.”
Faith & Football Reich has something on his resume that not too many NFL coaches have. After being drafted in 1985 by the Buffalo Bills and playing in the NFL for nine seasons, Reich took a break from football but knew he would want to return to coach one day. Before the desire to coach in 2006, Reich actually felt called to ministry and went to seminary. He even served as pastor of a Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, North Carolina — living out his faith and serving the community. Reich isn’t shy about his faith, either. He says it has played a vital role in his life and shaping him as a leader and a man. “I wouldn’t change one day of being in ministry,” Reich says. “It has really shaped and formed me as a person. Going into ministry was something I really felt called to do. I didn’t know where it was going to take me, but I knew that I loved coaching people and encouraging people. I learned about myself as a teacher during that time. To continue to develop those gifts and take them back into coaching in the NFL has been a lot of fun.”
Working Out In Westfield As the Colts gear up for their first season under Reich, they’ve found a new home for the summer — Grand Park in Westfield. The huge, 400-acre sports complex will host the team from the end of July through August for training camp. It is the first summer the Colts will work out at the facility in a deal the team announced back in September that will span 10 years. The Colts will host an open camp and provide opportunities for fans to connect with the team and the players throughout the summer. One of Reich’s first tasks after taking over as head coach was to visit Grand Park, and he has been nothing less than impressed by the facility. WestfieldMag.com / JULY 2018 / WESTFIELD MAGAZINE / 17
“The people here, the staff has been so accommodating,” Reich says. “When you are going to host an NFL team for training camp, that is a pretty big deal. This place is so incredible that it can handle it, but it isn’t just about the facility. It is about the people. We’ve found that the people here are top notch and helping us do something that is exciting for our team and the City of Westfield.
Grand Park in Westfield will host the team from the end of July through August for training camp.

“I remember the first time driving up,” Reich adds. “They told me a little about it, but as we are driving up you see all of these fields. Then you walk inside and there are three, full-size soccer fields. I’ve never seen a facility like it.”
Getting Back on Track
With the season right around the corner, Reich’s focus is to get the Colts back on track. He is well aware of the fanbase and the team’s expectations. Luck or no Luck, Reich’s goals remain the same — playing hard and being in a position to get back to the playoffs. The Colts have built the team and the draft that they wanted, and despite Andrew Luck’s status for the season, Reich is confident that the team can perform at a high level.

“It’s all about the people and the process,” Reich says. “We just have to build the team one player at a time and have the commitment and the work ethic. When that happens, it doesn’t take long. You can flip your record in a hurry in the NFL. I was just a part of it with Philadelphia. But we all have to do it together, and it really has to be an organizational thing. The players and the coaches have to be tight, and there has to be a trust in one another and a willingness to commit to fighting for it every day no matter what.”

STAY HYDRATED THIS SUMMER
The kids are on summer break and summer is in full swing, and as you might guess, temperatures in Indiana tend to climb the highest during the month of July. As you’re planning for the next family outing or kids’ sporting event, make sure you’re staying hydrated.
“You lose water when you sweat, so that’s why it’s important to replace fluids in your body,” Dr. Homsi says. “During the summer months, as we’re spending more time outside, it’s even more important to intentionally hydrate our bodies.”
“SOMETIMES DEHYDRATION CAN OCCUR SIMPLY FROM NOT DRINKING ENOUGH WATER.” While the human body can tolerate dehydration for short periods of time (a few hours), ongoing dehydration will affect your overall health. In addition to feeling thirsty, signs of dehydration include dry mouth, dizziness and fatigue. “Sometimes dehydration can occur simply from not drinking enough water,” says Dr. Mohamed Homsi, cardiac electrophysiologist at Indiana University Health West Hospital. “Other times it can be caused by diarrhea, vomiting, high fever or increased urination.” Excessive sweating can also lead to dehydration.
The amount of water you should drink each day is dependent on many factors, including your health and lifestyle. A good rule of thumb is to drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day, but some people may need more and others less. Talk with your doctor to find a good baseline for you.
with fluid, electrolytes and carbohydrate calories that are lost during a workout.” If you don’t need a sports drink, try to stick with water. Add flavoring to your water with lemon, lime mint or cucumber. Drinking lots of water is a healthy habit that is often learned from parents. Teach kids to drink enough water so that their urine is almost clear. And yes, this means they’ll probably be going to the bathroom more often throughout the day. Dehydration is a common problem, but the solution is an easy one. Drinking lots of water is part of a healthy lifestyle that can help avoid health problems and medical interventions later.
Can sports drinks help with hydration? According to experts, there’s a time and place for sports drinks if you exercise regularly. “When used as intended – to replenish fluids after true physical exertion- sports drinks can be a good option,” Dr. Homsi says. “Sports drinks can re-supply the body 24 / WESTFIELD MAGAZINE / JULY 2018 / WestfieldMag.com

FRESH SUCCESS THE LOCAL EATERY & PUB BRINGS FARM-TO-TABLE FOOD TO WESTFIELD Writer / Jane VanOsdol Photographer / Amy Payne
worked off plans that Baker brought from his time living and working in Oregon. The two worked to establish relationships with local farmers to provide fresh produce, meat and beverages for the restaurant. Word quickly spread in this close-knit community, and soon farmers were contacting the Local Eatery themselves.
Eight years in, owner Derek Means is reaping the success of his farm-to-table restaurant. Located at 14655 North Gray Road in Westfield, the Local Eatery & Pub has found its spot in the fresh food niche. Featuring hand-crafted freshly made artisan foods and locally crafted ales and cocktails, At the time, farm-to-table was a new concept the Local Eatery sources natural and organic in the Midwest, but Means was game. ingredients from Central Indiana small farmers whenever possible. “To me, it made complete sense,” he says. “We’re going to support the local economy Means and his former partner Craig Baker and we’re cutting down our food mile,

which dramatically decreases our carbon footprint. Being a good steward [of the environment] is something we’ve always ascribed to do.”
FARM-TO-TABLE: A MOVEMENT THAT’S CATCHING ON Today, independent restaurants are increasingly making it a point of business to connect with small, local farmers who are striving to make a living in this niche market. The Local Eatery is proof of what Means sees as a sustainable movement in the restaurant industry.
“I think we’ve seen a little bit of a paradigm shift in our food supply, and I think that’s an amazing thing, and we’ll continue to move that way for sure,” Means says. To nurture support between grower and consumer, Means is planning a meet-thefarmer dinner in late summer or early fall, a practice that is popular in other communities. Foodservice provider Piazza Produce is also helping to further the movement by offering locally grown produce and specialty items in addition to their regular menu.
BENEFITS OF FARM-TO-TABLE LIFESTYLE Means knows that successful small farms are a winning venture for all involved for several reasons: • Environment. “On a macro scale, we’re helping to have a healthy environment,” Meads says. “We’re closing the food mile to where it’s very small.” Additionally, the Local is a big supporter of recycling. They do 100 percent recycling and have worked to make it possible for all the businesses in their strip mall to use a single-stream recycling container. They also are looking into composting their food scraps with a local service. • Supporting small farms. Farm-to-table enables small family farms that generally have tight profit margins to stay in business without becoming big corporate farms. • Product safety. Farm-to-table is not mass-produced food. Small farmers are completely engaged in what they’re doing. They know the community and the people who are buying their food. • Variety. Instead of a homogenous product, small farms can cultivate crops of flavorful artisan or heirloom crops that make it a joy to eat. “Something that is authentic, close to the land, and very tasty,” Means says. EVER-CHANGING MENU The Local Eatery boasts a menu that is updated every three weeks. What’s in season is generally worked into the entrees and added to the menu. Means and chef Ian McCarty work with the farmers to make changes in real time as farmers update them on what they’re harvesting. As far as favorites go, Means loves their “phenomenal” tenderloin sandwich, the hummus plate, the flavorful veggie burger and their grassfed, dry-aged beef hamburgers. As expected, winter in Indiana limits the availability of fresh produce. The Local Eatery sources hydroponic lettuce from Green River Farms in Peru, Indiana, obtains root vegetables and apples from local farms and continues sourcing meat from their protein farmers. What they can’t source locally is shipped in to round out the menu. The Local Eatery & Pub is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Interested in being a farmer for the Local Eatery?
