“TheProgram.money we raise at the event goes directly back to our program and is spent on the children of Westfield,” says Janelle Campbell, Yellow Tie Gala event chair. “The kids in our program might need a new pair of shoes, tutoring, mentoring or braces. Some might need help with funds for a summer camp so they can stay engaged during summer break. There is a whole slew of reasons kids come to us.”

Photography Provided Yellow is often described as the color of happiness, optimism, energy, warmth and sunshine. It just happens to be the only color that Westfield’s first mayor, Andy Cook, can see due to colorblindness. In 2010 Cook organized the first-ever Yellow Tie Gala benefiting the Westfield Youth Assistance Program (WYAP). Rather than calling it a black-tie gala, he chose the moniker as a nod to the only color he can see.

In Westfield, that’s a hard question to answer, especially with the addition of the newest donut shop, Paul’s Donuts & Coffee. That’s the question owner Paul Lingeman responds with when you ask why another donut shop in Westfield.

How do you beat coffee and donuts?

& COFFEE BRINGS DELICIOUS CREATIONS TO WESTFIELD

Paul’s Donuts & Coffee opened in the old Little Caesar’s location earlier this summer, and Lingeman has been amazed by the reaction from the community.

“It just all sort of happened,” he says. “I searched for locations (in Central Indiana) for about nine months before I found the location we’re in now, which is perfect for us with the Lingemandrive-thru.”spentmost of his life working in health care, but during the pandemic he started to think about what else he’d want to do. Years ago, he had the idea to open a donut shop, and it took the pandemic for him to finally put everything together and go for the dream.

“I knew I needed to either do it now, or don’t do it at all,” he says.

Paul Lingeman

“Westfield is just growing so much, and everything is wonderful around here,” he says. “I couldn’t be in a better place, and we look forward to returning the favor by becoming more involved in the community and the schools very soon.”

“The first month we were open, I was in there every night starting at midnight to help make the donuts. I had no idea how physical it is to make donuts,” he says.

Paul’s Donuts & Coffee prides itself on offering something different each day, in hopes of catering to changing tastes and new visitors. Summer specialty drinks such as the Coconut Macaroon Cream Freezer are still customer favorites.

“Our crew works nonstop all night.” New to the menu are bagels, which Lingeman hopes will entice customers to stop by for a midday pick-me-up, along with their handcrafted coffees and perky energy drinks.

Everything is made in-store each day, and while most think donuts can add on the pounds, Lingeman suggests trying to make them first and be rewarded for the workout later.

To try for yourself, visit Paul’s Donuts & Coffee at 3221 State Road 32 East in Westfield. The shop is closed Mondays, open Tuesday – Saturday 6:00 am to 5:00 pm and Sunday 6:00 am to 1:00 pm. Follow them on Facebook at facebook. com/paulsdonut.

“This is a local owner, small business that’s very family-focused,” Lingeman says. “What our family likes we hope our customers will like, so we’re sharing our favorites with you.”

One way the organization promotes its members is through the annual Home-ARama event, a highly anticipated, luxury home show in some of Central Indiana’s most prestigious, newly developed communities that brings in thousands of visitors each year.

Throughout the years, its mission has been to promote the region’s new-home construction, and to communicate the homebuilding industry’s standards, practices and happenings.

Members of BAGI include home builders and remodelers, as well as contractors in trades such as electrical, plumbing, cabinetry, concrete, architectural design and flooring, just to name a few, and industry-specific professionals in real estate, insurance and more. Members are able to include countless benefits that help them network with other industry professionals, increase their knowledge of important insight and promote their business.

14 / SEPTEMBER 2022 / TownePost.com

“BAGI is believed to possibly be the oldest organized builder group in the United States,” says Steve Lains, Chief Executive Officer of BAGI. “It was called Indianapolis Home Builders until 1969 when the name was changed to the Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis, or more commonly known as BAGI. The name change reflected the organization’s growing reach and today, we have more than 500 members that consist of the area’s leading industry experts.”

This year’s show is making its third and final appearance in Westfield’s Chatham Hills neighborhood and will be held Thursdays through Sundays from noon to 8:00 p.m. between September 22 and October 9.

Writer/ Julie Yates Photography Provided The Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis (BAGI) is celebrating 100 years of providing key networking and education opportunities to hundreds of its members and the citizens of Central Indiana. The organization was created in 1922 and serves Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Johnson, Madison, Marion, Morgan and Shelby County, respectively.

“Home-A-Rama gives individuals the opportunity to experience six incredible custom-built, fully decorated and landscaped homes in some of the area’s most stunning neighborhoods,” Lains says.

“Built by members of BAGI, these homes range in price from $2-$3M and showcase all the latest trends in technology, design, outdoor living, landscaping and more to provide attendees with ideas for their new or existing homes.

BAGI is located at 6510 Telecom Drive, Suite 185, Indianapolis, IN. You can give them a call at 317-236-6330.

Perhaps most importantly to consumers, BAGI provides peace of mind that when individuals work with a member, they are working with a trusted, reputable company.

The title sponsor of this year’s Home-A-Rama is First Internet Bank, and the outstanding custom homebuilders featured are AR Homes, BBG Construction, Carrington Homes, Scott Campbell Custom Homes, Sigma Builders and Wedgewood Building Company. During the show, the builders will be on hand to answer questions, provide advice or discuss their uniquely built showcase home. Many of the designers and suppliers will also be available at the homes to provide information on their products and services. Along with events, BAGI imparts information to the public in several other ways. Its official publication is Haven Magazine. The organization’s website also serves as a valuable tool, providing member information, industry news, available lots and communities to build in, and other resources.

Traditional commercial or residential developers see properties with terrain changes, sprawling woods and rolling hills, and often shake their heads, opting instead to build on flat fields. The team at Henke Development Group, however, seek out such properties because they are both beautiful and unique. That’s precisely what they’ve done at The Club at Chatham Hills, a private, residential golf course community in Westfield that offers unique topography of creeks, rolling hills, woods, lakes, and two Pete Dye-designed golf courses (the nine-hole Executive Course and 18-hole Championship Course).

The answers to those questions drive the amenities, which Henke heavily invests in. The Club at Chatham Hills includes amenities that are unheard of in traditional club settings. For instance, the 65,000-square-foot clubhouse includes a four-lane bowling alley, two-story fitness center with a spin studio, tennis facilities, indoor pool, and outdoor pool with cabanas as well as a swim-up bar (the only one in the state). They took it a step further by considering seasonality and included a sledding hill, bonfire pits, and pop-up igloos for winter dining. In addition, the clubhouse has two restaurants. Chats on the Hill boasts yummy breakfast offerings such as made-to-order omelets, avocado toast, chorizo breakfast burritos, fresh fruit and granola. Lunch and dinner items include burgers, nachos, wings, wraps and fresh salads. Hamilton’s Bar & Grille, an upscale sports bar, offers Chilean sea bass, rib eye, pastas and vegan

“We approach every project from a personal standpoint, asking who is going to be living at a certain development - empty nesters?

People with young families?” says Betsy Garfield, co-founder of Henke Development Group, who runs the company with her father Steve and brother Brad.

“It goes back to us thinking about how our residents spend their days,” Garfield says. “We have busy families with kids involved in travel sports, and they love being two minutes from Grand Park and also being able to meet neighbors at the club for lunch. We also have grandparents who bring their grandchildren here to go swimming.”

It’s not unusual for people to choose to relocate to be closer to grandkids. Garfield has seen a spike in this population, particularly following COVID-19.

Andre and Erica Porter had been considering adding a pool and other features that their kids would enjoy to their existing 2018 Home-A-Rama home. When they reviewed options, however, they decided against adding the features to the existing home, and instead opted to work with Carrington Homes on its 2022 HomeA-Rama home, where the features would be built into their plans.

Currently, The Club at Chatham Hills has more than 450 residents. There are some beautiful larger lots near Home-A-Rama that are now available, many with trees or Home-A-Rama Home-A-Rama

“We are frequently asked if everybody who lives here golfs, and the answer is no,” Garfield says. “Only about 40% of our residents on our courses are golf members.” These lots are highly desirable for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the breathtaking view. In addition, many residents love that they can buy a lot for which they don’t have to maintain much of the yard, because it may overlook 10 acres of perfectly manicured grass, wildlife wetlands or Havingwoods.amenities on-site or close by is key in today’s fast-paced world. The developers recognize that people appreciate being able to reclaim precious time in their day by not having to travel far to enjoy such amenities.

Residents tell her, “You’re too young to have experienced this yet, but when your kids get older you’ll see that it’s harder to make friends when you move somewhere. You don’t have the schools, the soccer teams, the football tailgates and all of that to connect you with other people.”

Moving to a community like this, however, gives them a built-in social scene since this community tends to be socially driven. For instance, people assemble to play tennis, pickleball, swim or attend an event at the Inclub.September, Chatham Hills will host Home-A-Rama for the third time. This year’s event features seven elite homebuilders - Wedgewood Building Company, Old Town Design Group, Sigma Builders, Christopher Scott Homes, Carrington Homes, BBG Construction, and Scott Campbell Custom Homes. These $2 million homes are between 5,500 and 8,200 square feet. Though most are already sold, a couple of lots are still available.

“In addition to the new features, we were drawn in by the unique floor plan and the fantastic tree-lined view of the golf course from the backyard,” Erica Porter says. “Of course we were pleased to find the new home opportunity in Chatham Hills as we have built many friendships here, and our kids love the neighborhood.”

cul-de-sac settings. Chatham Village is getting ready to open across from the clubhouse. This newest section, where construction on home sites will start this summer, will offer front-porch-style living with tree-lined streetscapes, lowmaintenance lots, and white picket fences running along the front yards.

The Home-A-Rama preview party will take place on September 21. The HomeA-Rama team is also planning a couple of fun theme nights such as Ladies Night. Show dates are as follows: September 22 to 25, September 29 to October 2, and October 6 to 9. For more about Henke Development Group, visit henkedevelopment.com or chathamhills.coM for home and lot information. For more information on Home-A-Rama, go to bagi.com.

“It has been carefully designed to incorporate details that give a cute and welcoming feel,” Garfield says. “It will feature classic American architecture styles, with alley-load garages on the north side and custom homes on the south portion.” These homes will start around $550,000. Homes throughout Chatham Village and Chatham Hills range up to $3m+.

Henke Development Group has plans to develop a retail commercial village on a 12-acre lake, which will offer opportunities for water recreation such as fishing and kayaking. That’s not been a possibility on the lakes near the golf courses, due to the possibility of errant golf balls.

BRIGHTENING THINGS UP

Maria also makes residents feel at home by including familiar household staples throughout CarDon’s communities.

To allow seniors the smoothest transition possible from a larger house to an assisted or independent living apartment, Maria starts with safety in mind. These are a few steps she makes sure are included during construction:

“When you transition to an apartmentstyle life, you might think you’re missing out on your old household items and luxuries, but you can still enjoy them in the amenity spaces around you,” she said. “For example, let’s say you had a piano in your house — you might walk down the hall from your apartment and find one in the activity room. In the Memory Care unit of our Altenheim community, residents have a multifunctional theater area right outside of their rooms where they can watch their favorite movies and shows on a large TV as well as play card games and engage in other fun activities. So, it’s like a living room — they just have to take a little trip to get Mariathere!”often finds herself taking trips to many different CarDon communities, which is why the organization is gearing up to showcase her ventures on a regular basis through social media.

Story Provided Interior designer Maria Ramirez takes the same approach to homes that she took to the puzzles she spent hours building in her room as a little girl.

“A lot of people who are downsizing get scared that they won’t be able to fit everything they want,” she said. “But I create spaces where they don’t have to cram everything in or get rid of their most cherished keepsakes.”

Vibrant lights and colors generally make spaces appear bigger. These elements are also essential for the aging eyes of CarDon’s residents. That’s why Maria suggests optimal overhead lighting as well as reading lamps and floor lamps. A modern color palette is also more appealing to younger generations who may be looking for senior living options to fit their loved ones’ needs.

“My job is a bit tricky because it requires mixing a traditional, older feel with a modern aesthetic.”

“It’s all about putting different pieces together and making sure they fit,” she said.

As the corporate interior designer for CarDon & Associates, a Bloomington, Ind.based senior living community management company, Maria designs living spaces to appeal across generations and accommodate people who are downsizing.

These are especially important for helping residents maintain balance in the bathroom and shower.

INSTALLING GRAB BARS

MAINTAINING SMOOTH FLOORING THROUGHOUT THE HOME Doing away with rugs not only prevents trips and falls, but maintaining the same flooring height and creating smooth transitions from hardwood or tile to carpet make living spaces feel more open and free flowing.

As she said: “We thought this would be a fun way to let staff and residents know, ‘Here’s where Maria is this week,’ and for me to say, ‘Hey, I’m coming your way and working to enhance the spaces where we all live, work and play.’”

“Obviously, Bloomington is home to Indiana University so IU football is always a great idea when visiting the city,” says Erin White, director of leisure marketing and media for Visit Bloomington. “We also have the 4th Street Festival of the Arts and Crafts, the 10th Annual Kiwanis Indiana Balloon Festival, and many other festivals all fall long.”

“You’ll find more than a dozen houses that have been converted into international restaurants,” White says. “You can find Tibetan, Turkish, Indian, Afghan, Korean and much more in Bloomington.”

If you want outdoor adventure, look no further than Monroe Lake. It’s Indiana’s largest land-bound body of water with more than 11,000 surface acres. Nature lovers will find more than just water activities at the lake.

Foodies will love dining on 4th Street, which is lovingly referred to as international restaurant row.

Bloomington draws people in with its cultural diversity, and is home to more than 350 different restaurants including more than 80 international restaurants.

“Monroe Lake is a fantastic place for folks to spend time,” White says. “We have three boat rental companies on the water that provide all sorts of personal watercraft including jet skis, kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, pontoon boats, deck boats, and double-decker boats complete with a slide.

Andy Brown has been installing Andersen windows since he was 15 years old. Andy’s father, Mitch, also has a background rich with experience. For instance, he owns a number of Liberty Tax franchises. He also owns multiple Pure Barre fitness studios. As for windows and doors, he’s done pretty much everything you can imagine. He wanted to be a part of Hometown Window and Door Company to bring a better customer experience to the Indianapolis market than what is currently offered.

IS EAGER TO SERVE THE COMMUNITY

“Hetable.has installed tens of thousands of windows and was a top sales rep for Renewal by Andersen,” says Scott Dorrell, sales manager for Hometown Window and Door. “Now he’s part-owner and GM of the company.”

Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Brian Brosmer Quality counts, but so does community. When you can get both quality and community wrapped into one experience, it’s the best of both worlds. That’s precisely what you get when you contact the team at Hometown Window & Door Company, certified professionals with more than 30 years of experience in working with Indiana homeowners. The four co-owners, Darren Peck, Dan Hanlin, Mitch Brown and Andy Brown, all bring a wealth of knowledge, experience, energy and commitment to the

HOMETOWN WINDOW & DOOR COMPANY

In February 2022, the four Hometown owners decided to purchase Clevernest, an Andersen window dealer located in Carmel. Becoming a dealer allowed them to offer more options at better prices and provide the consumer with a better customer service experience. The dealership-status enables the team to sell to new construction, product only, offer service to existing Andersen customers, and full-service whiteglove installation.

To help celebrate community, they are offering Hamilton County residents a special hometown deal to commemorate the hometown brand acquiring the Clevernest brand.

a Hamilton County fixture for more than 30 years. Peck & Hanlin started Hometown Roofing Team in 2018 in response to their insurance agents — customers needing qualified and honest, ethical inspections of hail-damaged homes when unscrupulous, out-of-town companies come into town pressuring homeowners to sign contracts they’re unable to get out of.

Window invented all kinds of firsts,” Dorrell says. “They invented doublepane glass. They invented the Perma-Shield process, and they invented Fibrex composite material. Andersen Window has just been huge innovators in the window and door industry. We have a really neat company history in the Andersen brand, and now we are able to bring it to market and give people a full-service, hometown experience.”

TownePost.com / SEPTEMBER 2022 / WESTFIELD MAGAZINE / 31

After acquiring the Clevernest dealership, they renamed the company Hometown Window & Door Company to put an emphasis on the hometown feel. They provide a large selection of window styles, shapes and lines to coordinate with any type of home. Hometown Window & Door carries Andersen window and door products. Andersen Windows & Doors was incorporated in 1903 and is the oldest window and door company in the United States. They use only national, top-rated brands and offer a non-prorated and fullytransferable warranty on their windows and doors. The warranty is one of the best in the “Andersenindustry.

“The guys wanted to do something special for the people in the community so we are giving 25% off to anybody who purchases windows in the next few months,” Dorrell Peck, says.

Peck and Hanlin launched the Hometown Window Team in 2018 in response to the housing boom that occurred in the late 70s when a burst of homes were built with wood windows that 40 years later were beginning to “Therefail. was also a need for quality replacement windows for homes built in the 70s and 80s. I saw outside companies coming in and giving high-pressure, highdollar sales efforts, which I find completely inappropriate,” Peck says. “We, on the other hand, are looking to just work in and around Hamilton County because we’re committed to offering a better, more competitive service for those homes that need updating, whether that be windows, roofing, or “Darrensiding.”

and I are committed to providing a quality customer experience — the same commitment that we have operated the Restoration business by for the last 33-plus years,” Hanlin says.   Peck and Hanlin are thrilled to partner with a company known for quality. Andersen’s windows and doors are unsurpassed for beauty, quality and value. There are fullframe wood and aluminum products but also the versatility of composite windows. They’re available for commercial as well as residential applications.

A hip or knee replacement can last one to two hours, while the patient is under general anesthesia. For a hip replacement, the surgeon will remove the damaged bone, tissue, and cartilage from the hip joint. Then, the “ball and socket” part of the hip is replaced with artificial parts (typically metal rods) that will allow the hip joints to work properly and smoothly. For a knee replacement, the surgeon will make an incision on the front or side of the knee, in order to access the joint. The surgeon will then remove the damaged bone, tissue, or cartilage and replace the area with a new (manmade) joint. WHAT HAPPENS AFTER SURGERY?

The patient’s doctor will determine if surgery is necessary by taking x-rays. From there, the doctor can get a closer look and decide if surgery is the right path. Patients are encouraged to try other alternatives to limit pain before deciding on surgery. Options include exercise, over the counter medications, steroid injections, bracing, acupuncture, weight loss, or activity modifications. It is also vital that the patient’s health is evaluated with blood tests and sometimes a chest x-ray as well prior to surgery.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR CARE TEAM

HIP AND REPLACEMENTKNEE

The patient’s movement will be extremely limited post-surgery. Patients can expect to be prescribed medication for pain. Following the surgery, a therapist may help with movements and exercises to regain movement, momentum, and recovery. Patients may be in the hospital anywhere from two to four days. It is vital to make sure the patient has a caregiver available to help them. Also, the patient should make sure they have enough groceries and prepared meals. Creating a designated area with easy-to-reach items and a plan for washing/ bathing is also important. Patients should also make sure floors are walkable, anything that may cause a tripping/falling hazard must be moved.

Writer / Dr. Leonard Buller, orthopedic surgeon at IU Health Saxony–soon to be IU Health Fishers

Getting a knee or hip replaced is a surgery that can improve an individual’s quality of life dramatically. Throughout the entire process, from before surgery to the recovery stage, the patient’s care team will be there every step of the way.
