SPOTLIGHT ON ART RETURNING TO BENEFIT THREE LOCAL YOUTH-SERVING ORGANIZATIONS $50,000 RAISED AT FIRST-YEAR EVENT IN NOVEMBER AT HOTEL CARMICHAEL Last November, Esther Lakes, Chairwoman and Founder of Spotlight on Art Benefiting Children and her team of community leaders, successfully raised $50,000 to support the youth of Prevail, Inc., the Tom & Soni Sheehan Boys & Girls Club of Noblesville and Children’s TherAplay Foundation, Inc. Building off of their first year’s accomplishments, the event committee is looking forward to hosting another Spotlight on Art this November 9th. “A sincere thank you to all who helped make our first Spotlight on Art Benefiting Children a success: our sponsors, the awardwinning artists, the teachers and students who donated children’s art, and especially those who attended and purchased art,” stated Lakes. “Because of the community’s generosity, the Spotlight on Art committee was able to donate $50,000 to three youthserving organizations that are making a
positive impact in our community.” Once again, this premier evening of art and philanthropy will be held at Hotel Carmichael in Carmel. Guests are invited to attend and have the opportunity to support children who face life’s challenges by shopping with local awarding-winning artists as well as artwork from local student artists. Each will be selling pieces that may enrich the lives of the purchaser, while enriching the lives of the local children that need this support the most. “I have always believed in the greatness and ingenuity of people of Hamilton County,” stated Honorary Event Chair, retired judge Steve Nation. “We come together to provide answers for the needs of our citizens and to set a better course. This is what we are supporting through this event, Prevail, Boys & Girls Club of Noblesville, and
Children’s TherAplay. These organizations have proven their commitment and ability to provide our children and their families with the tools to overcome their situations. I know that we will not stop until each child has the possibility of reaching their own greatness.” “We invite everyone to consider attending this premier evening of art and philanthropy that supports children’s charities, thanks to the talent of local and student artists,” stated Lakes. “With a bit of support from many, enriching the lives of these diverse groups of children, it’s possible to make so many dreams come true!” To purchase event tickets and learn about sponsorship opportunities, visit www. spotlightonart.home.qtego.us/, or follow the event on Facebook and Instagram.

W
estfield is embracing the spirit of giving by rallying together for its annual RocksGiving initiative, alongside its Holiday Giving program, set to uplift those in need during the upcoming festive season. With a commitment to inclusivity and compassion, Westfield Washington Schools and the Westfield Education Foundation, in collaboration with generous partners including Duke Energy, the Duke Energy Foundation, Costco and Coca-Cola, are set to host the RocksGiving event. Scheduled for Monday, November 20 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., the RocksGiving event is set to offer a traditional holiday meal, complete with turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, stuffing, green peas, rolls, and the holiday favorite, pumpkin pie. The organizers emphasize the importance
of collective participation, urging everyone to join the table and partake in the spirit of unity. “This is a holiday meal for anyone in Hamilton County,” says Westfield Washington Schools Director of Community Engagement Ashley Knott. “We want everyone to come to the table. Whether you’re fiscally in need or want connection to the community, we want to feed everyone.” Despite the challenges posed by increasing food costs, the organizers are determined to keep the event free of charge. “We are welcoming additional fiscal partners to support this event,” Knott says. “The focus for us remains on ensuring that the warmth of the holiday season reaches every corner of the community.”
To volunteer or support RocksGiving, contact Ashley Knott at knotta@wws.k12.in.us. In conjunction with RocksGiving, the Westfield community is gearing up for its Holiday Giving program to assist families with gifts for youths during the month of December. “With the generosity of the community, neighbors and Open Hearts, we’ll be able to work together to make this happen,” Knott says. “It’s beautiful to see collaboration come together for goodwill.” Each youth, aged 0 to 18, will receive six gifts including three items they need and three items they want, with an estimated total cost of $150 per youth. Parents will be sent home with the six gifts along with a roll of wrapping paper to give to their child. The program extends its support

beyond elementary schools to cater to intermediate, middle and high school students, as well as those who are not Westfield students. “We are anticipating more than 650 students in need this holiday season,” Knott says. “The goal of this program is making sure that all youth have an opportunity to have a great holiday season.” A late list will be available for those signing up after October 27. School counselors and liaisons will facilitate this list to ensure the added youth are included. By fostering an environment that values every individual, the initiative seeks to make a meaningful impact on the lives of youths, ensuring they feel valued, connected and supported. Through the collective efforts of RocksGiving and the Holiday Giving program, Westfield is setting a standard of community-driven compassion and support. For more, visit wwswef.org/ holidaygiving. CARING BEYOND COMMUNITY WALLS hen CarDon & Associates highlights its “communities,” the organization is not only calling attention to its senior living campuses but to their surrounding towns and global sense of fellowship as well. CarDon cares for communities beyond its own — from neighborhoods just across the street all the way down to exotic locales like Guatemala. Paoli Health & Living, CarDon’s community in Paoli, Indiana, just recently added a service to its meal delivery program for a nearby senior housing complex. Now, in addition to delivering meals every Wednesday, CarDon staffers are hosting monthly cookouts in the complex’s courtyard. “What started out as a program to meet the nutritional needs of this vulnerable group turned into so much more,” said Paoli’s Clinical Liaison Sandra Hatton. “Seniors are greeted with a smile, a hot meal and a care check to make sure they are doing okay. They started out as our neighbors and are now part of our family.” CarDon’s family serves people on the other side of the age spectrum as well. Solarbron, CarDon’s Evansville community, serves as a sponsor of the Tri-State BackPack Hero program in an effort to provide nutritious meals to local students throughout the school year. The program gives free bagged meals to students K-12 on the Friday of each school week to feed them over the weekend. They also receive these food bags through holidays and summer break. “Healthy aging starts when we’re young, so this partnership gives us an opportunity to invest in our youth in a tangible way,” said Solarbron’s Director of Residential Marketing Ashley Mayo. “A full belly makes for a focused student, which leads to a better education experience and healthier life choices. So, by the time they’re walking through our senior living doors, they’ve lived a long and healthy life and are ready to enjoy all they’ve worked toward. It’s a simple effort but a vital part of a healthy community.”
2023 marks the third year Solarbron has hosted the “Lemonade Stand fundraiser” to support the efforts of the Isaiah 117 House, which provides loving homes and everyday needs for children across the country as they await foster care placement. A Solarbron resident’s great-grandson informed the community about this cause when he was just seven years old. “He designs the flyers for our site each year and gives a presentation to our residents,” Mayo said. “This fundraiser is a great opportunity to unite the generations and raise money for a worthy cause. The slogan is ‘Love, you’re not alone.’ The mission is to let each child who stays at Isaiah 117 House know they’re loved and not alone in what can be a difficult situation. Love transcends generations, making this a universally appealing event for our residents, staff and community.” Love transcends borders as well, as evidenced by a CarDon team member’s recent efforts in Guatemala. On a Friday that would have normally found CarDon Chief Growth Officer Kendra Fauth-Edwards delivering meals for Hamilton County Meals on Wheels, she and her family were delivering meals to seniors in Guatemala. They joined the philanthropic traveling group The Village Experience in this effort. “If you know me well, you know how passionate I am about serving seniors,” Fauth-Edwards said. “I love what I do, so this opportunity was extra special.” THE LANGUAGE BARRIER WAS VERY REAL, BUT LOVE IS A UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE.” At the end of the day, whether it’s serving senior living residents across Indiana, helping children around the nation or caring for people outside the U.S., CarDon is simply about “family caring for family.”

MORE THAN A GAME PICKLEBALL PROVIDES AN IMPORTANT OUTLET FOR DANNY WILSON Writer / Vince Welch Photographer / Sarah Browning

T
his is a story about pickleball. And cancer. And friendship. And survival.
It was March of 2022. Danny Wilson was in Fort Wayne to play in a pickleball tournament the next day, with his mixeddoubles partner, Lisa Martin. During the night, Wilson became violently ill. Food poisoning? What lousy timing, he thought. It was no better in the morning. Worse actually. As sick as he was, Wilson was angry because he wouldn’t be able to play in the tournament, and felt he was letting down Martin. Sounds crazy, right? But it’s the way competitors think, and Wilson is a competitor - he always has been. Growing up in Anderson, Wilson played high school golf and tennis, and continued his tennis career at Anderson College. As an adult, he shifted to running. Then he was introduced to pickleball. “I loved it from the
start,” Wilson says.
have needed a support system of friends.
His first time on the pickleball court, Martin was there too, at the neighborhood courts with friends. She recognized him from passing her home while on his daily run. She referred to him as “runner dude,” and they immediately connected.
When Wilson returned home from that pickleball tournament in March of 2022, the symptoms didn’t improve and he ended up in the emergency room. He wouldn’t go home for more than two weeks. No one ever hopes to have food poisoning, unless the alternative is stomach cancer. It wasn’t food poisoning.
They take their pickleball seriously. They compete together as mixed-doubles partners, and train together on the court and in the gym, all with their eye on the next scheduled tournament. But they’re more than pickleball partners. Their friendship runs deep. “I love him like I love my brother,” Martin says. Wilson and his wife of nearly 30 years, Michelle, and Martin and her husband, Bill, are dear friends. And Wilson and Michelle

Duodenal adenocarcinoma cancer, located where the small intestine connects to the stomach, is rare and persistent. There was a six-hour surgery in April of 2022, and a painful return to the hospital two months later. The scan was clean but the pain was unbearable. Wilson’s frame, even when healthy, could be described as wiry. Cancer ravaged his appetite and left him constantly nauseous. His weight plummeted from 145
to 112. “When I saw him, I went to the car and cried,” Martin says. Bill is a retired physician. They knew, maybe even more than Wilson and Michelle, the seriousness of the situation. “It was tough, not just on me,” Wilson says. “It was hard on Michelle too, physically and mentally.” Through it all, Wilson was determined to return to the pickleball court. “I kept asking the doctors, ‘When can I play?’” he recalls.
Wilson doesn’t advertise his condition, but people talk. “I’ve had pickleball players ask to pray with me,” he says. “People I don’t even know. That means a lot.”

Pickleball courts are everywhere. You either It’s amazing what brings light into cancer’s play or know someone who does. For some darkness. For Wilson, it’s the feel of a perfect it’s just a game. For others, like Danny third shot drop, or a deftly placed dink. Wilson, it’s more. Much more. It’s survival. “I don’t know where I’d be without
Wilson not only returned to the court, but he and Martin also resumed tournament play. “We dropped down a level, from 4.0 to 3.5, but just being on the court again was a victory,” Wilson says. They competed in eight tournaments from June through November, even medaling at West Lafayette in August. “From where I’d come from, that was huge,” Wilson says. But cancer is a stubborn opponent. Always lurking, threatening your body and your peace of mind. And in December of 2022, it returned.

“Surgery is the best way to get rid of it, but it’s so risky because of the location,” Wilson explains. “We’ve decided against it for now.” The summer day is overcast, but not gloomy. It mirrors Wilson’s demeanor. He is quiet, but pleasant. He has taken his three morning chemo pills and mentally prepared himself for the day. He slowly walks to the SUV in his driveway, and makes the short and familiar drive to the oncology center to receive his daily treatment. Lying under the eye of the radiation machine is not physically painful, nor does it take long. He’s gone from the waiting room less than 15 minutes, and looks no different upon his return. But rest assured, it takes its toll.

A GRAND ADVENTURE AWAITS THE ESCAPE ROOM USA UNVEILS GRAND ELVEN ADVENTURE IN WESTFIELD Writer / Natalie Gargiulo Photographer / Dylan Senkus
Welcome to the enchanting Forest of Estweld at The Escape Room USA’s newest Grand Elven Adventure in Westfield, opening in November. Guests will embark on an extraordinary 75-minute quest and transform into nimble elves, entrusted with the mission of uncovering the treasures scattered throughout the mystical forest and the bustling village. “We are really excited to have this Adventure open,” says Brendon Harbron, Chairman of The Escape Room USA. “Unlike an escape room, which is more linear, the Adventurer will have 40 activities to explore and participate in.”
Joe Stowell, Adventure Technician, Jennifer Harbron, CEO and Don McPheron, Chief Escapitect
As participants walk through the woods, they will encounter two giant wooden doors that lead to recipes to brew magical potions, an elven treehouse, and a magical wand to cast spells, just to name a few. Mazes and obstacles are strategically placed among the foliage and charming village scenes. Collaboration and quick thinking will be essential as Adventurers navigate through the designed pathways, uncovering clues that lead them closer to the wealth of the kingdom. “A favorite part of my job is to create a wow factor or eye candy, as I call it, to make each escape room as immersive as possible,” says Chief Operating Officer and Chief Escapitect Don McPheron. “I like seeing guests as they enter a room or solve a puzzle, and they get excited. That is my ultimate reward for putting my everything into creating our Escape Adventures.” With each twist and turn, Adventurers go on an interactive journey

that ignites the imagination and encourages collaboration among guests. “So much time, energy and heart go into making an immersive Adventure come to life,” says Jennifer Harbron, Chief Executive Officer of The Escape Room USA. “We have an amazing team led by Don, who stretches the boundaries of what we think we can do. The reward is watching guests actively become a part of that created world.” Beyond the captivating Adventures, the team at The Escape Room USA (with locations in Indianapolis, Fishers and Westfield) takes pride in its commitment to creating Adventures for the whole family. The newest experience, Grand Elven Adventure, will open Friday, November 17 in Westfield at 16848 Southpark Drive. This adventure welcomes groups of four to 10 people and can be booked online at escaperoomusa.com, or by calling 317-556-1873. “We have puzzles for the younger population along with designs that are more advanced for adults,” Brendon says. “What makes this Adventure unique is that it is something that the family can do together, and everyone can be an active participant in it, in one way or another.” Visit escaperoomusa.com to learn more.

Sometimes these symptoms are brushed aside as an inevitable part of getting older. But what if there was a place that offered a fresh perspective and a path to reclaiming your health with evidence-based solutions? Meet Yoo Direct Health, a growing practice recognized as a leader in functional and aesthetic medicine. Their mission is simple, yet profound; to provide patients with the best possible outcomes. They’ve been doing just that - helping patients reach their health goals.
A COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE Yoo Direct Health is celebrating its fifth anniversary in November, and they’re part of a growing portion of the healthcare industry - functional and aesthetic medicine. Founder and Chief Executive Officer Lexi Yoo, FNP-BC/CPNP, says she’s proud that Yoo Direct Health has become a leader in the industry as they’ve continued to grow and innovate. They welcomed Nikki Keserich, NP, and Allen Stewart, FNP-BC. Both practitioners offer a unique perspective, as they were patients prior to joining the practice. Stewart has a special interest in men’s health, and his perspective as a patient and a practitioner adds a valuable dimension to their practice, allowing them to better understand and address the symptoms experienced by men and the impact it can have on them, their families and their relationships. What sets Yoo Direct Health apart is their commitment to education and excellence. TownePost.com / NOVEMBER 2023 / 25
New providers go through a 90-day orientation process, which includes hands-on clinical experience, shadowing all positions within the practice, as well as access to specialized content from the Yoo Direct Health Training Academy, designed by Lexi herself. This comprehensive approach ensures that every team member understands not only the services they offer, but also the roles of their colleagues, to provide seamless patient care.
in an ever-changing industry is critical to Lexi and her staff. Over the past five years she’s continued to add innovative therapies such as bioidentical hormone therapy, gut health protocols, ozone therapy, sexual wellness protocols (the “O” and “P” shot), ultrasound technology, as well as a comprehensive weight-loss program that includes in-depth body composition testing, health coaching, and incorporating modalities such as peptide therapy.
The commitment to education goes beyond the initial training period. The providers at Yoo Direct Health are continuously learning through internal trainings and conferences to not only build on the knowledge they already have, but also to stay at the forefront of cutting-edge therapies that may help their patients achieve the outcomes they seek.
Yoo Direct Health incorporates the use of ultrasound technology for the medical and aesthetic side of their practice. Using ultrasound enhances patient outcomes, safety and precision by providing real-time imaging guidance that enables the providers to visualize internal structures, monitor tissue response, and perform procedures with greater accuracy and minimized risks.
EMBRACING INNOVATIVE THERAPIES AND TECHNOLOGY
“Since we’ve been using the ultrasound technology, we’ve been able to help other offices with patients experiencing complications from their aesthetic treatment,” Lexi says. “We know with the ultrasound, and we can safely and effectively help diagnose and potentially treat the complication.”
Yoo Direct Health is dedicated to staying at the forefront of innovative therapies and technology. Constant learning and growth

Ozone is a therapeutic process, which involves the use of an energized form of oxygen known as ozone (O3), and has a wide range of potential benefits, from immune support to antiinflammatory effects and detoxification. Its effects have been documented in the potential treatment of conditions such as acne, allergies, skin irritations, various skin disorders, fatigue, joint pain, chronic respiratory diseases and so much more. “We attend a large amount of educational conferences, and while we’re there, we listen and learn,” says Min Yoo, chief operating officer. “Then, when we return, we take those critical pieces of information and work to implement them in our practice for the benefit of our patients. We also want to ensure we’re not just implementing new therapies without standards for their outcomes.”

YOO DIRECT HEALTH PATIENT EXPERIENCE Sandy Carmin, a longtime patient, exemplifies the transformative power of Yoo Direct Health. Frustrated with the lack of information and care she received after being diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease, she sought help from Lexi. Carmin underwent hormone pellet replacement therapy, intravenous ozone therapy, and gut-health optimization, and the results were nothing short of astonishing. “I was put on prednisone by a different provider, which created a whole slew of other issues,” Carmin says. She sought out an alternative solution through Yoo Direct Health. At the recommendation of Lexi, Carmin decided to give ozone therapy a try.
1/2 PAGE AD
“By the fifth ozone therapy treatment, I saw amazing results,” Carmin says. “After the sixth treatment, I couldn’t believe how I could move, work out and do the things I was doing way before my diagnosis.” Lexi says Carmin has been very consistent with her health, investing the time and energy it takes to move into complete remission of Hashimoto’s disease and witnessing her inflammatory markers drop. Lexi emphasizes that Yoo Direct Health believes in empowering patients to take control of their well-being, and Carmin’s transformation is the ultimate testament to that philosophy. The staff at Yoo Direct Health are proud to have played a part in her remarkable transformation.

NEW FLAVOR NYLA’S OPENS ON PARK STREET Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Justin Sicking
32 / WESTFIELD MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2023 / TownePost.com
T
o the delight of many on the north side, Nyla’s restaurant opened in mid-October. The eagerly anticipated eatery is situated along what is known as Westfield’s restaurant row, adjacent to Grand Junction Plaza. Owned by Nyla and Scott Wolf, the proprietors of the well-known Italian House on Park, which is located next door, The Broken Barrel and several Wolfies Grill locations, Nyla’s touts a unique brand of Americana. Housed in a rustic, red barn, the shabby chic yet upscale atmosphere offers diners an eclectic menu based on heartland favorites. Although it is a brand-new concept, its namesake refers to a breakfast cafe that was once at Noblesville’s Five Points intersection. It was one of the very first restaurants the Wolfs owned, and although the first Nyla’s no longer exists, it is far from forgotten. “My family said we had to include murals on the wall of all the previous businesses we owned,” Nyla Wolf says. “Nyla’s feels small and intimate with elegant little lamps on each table. It seats 70 people. There are booths and seating around the bar area as well as a second story. There’s no kitchen inside the building. Instead, we converted the former Cone & Crumb site and built a walkway between the two buildings.” “Chef Esli, who is our chef at Italian House, developed the menu,” Wolf adds. “It is nothing like the Italian House. Every meal will start with the most delicious cream of mushroom soup, or my wedge salad topped with either a balsamic or blue cheese dressing. The entrees are $20 to $45 and come with side dishes. There is fried chicken, chicken Milanese, sea bass, salmon, and lamb or pork chops. Three steaks are available: a rib eye, strip or filet. For vegetarians there is zucchini pasta and a mushroom Wellington made with puff pastry.” Wolf says she thinks the chicken may become the signature dish. The idea of offering carry-out chicken is being explored. Customers would come to the front of the old Cone & Crumb building to place and pick up orders.

The Italian House features high-end wines, but at Nyla’s it’s all about cocktails and premium bourbon. There is a lavender margarita and an oatmeal cookie Manhattan. The friendly and funky vibe lends itself to laughter and great conversation. Westfield’s restaurant row is a popular destination. During peak hours the area can become crowded. To alleviate that situation, free valet parking with a staff of four is offered for both Nyla’s and the Italian house. Customers must be 21 and older. “Nyla’s is completely different from the Italian House,” Wolf says. “It’s more than just a steakhouse. It’s like coming to my house for dinner. Enjoy the great atmosphere and have a good meal. Just have fun.” Nyla’s is located at 211 Park Street in Westfield. Call 317-763-5412 or visit nylasrestaurant.com for more info.

Sealing to Fόrte Surfaces, to better represent the products they offer.
It might come as a surprise to some - the dark stains on the driveway, pitting and cracking in the garage floor, and weather damage to the back porch aren’t just nuisances we have to tolerate.
The family-owned business has Kirkby leading the way as chief executive officer, and he brings plenty of experience to the position.
There’s a solution to keeping hard surfaces clean and mold-free, and Jason Kirkby of Fόrte Surfaces can tell you all about it. Fόrte Surfaces began in 2009, added the popular epoxy flooring to their list of services by 2015, and in 2023, updated their name and brand from Indiana Cleaning and
“I started cleaning and sealing driveways in high school, and have been around concrete my whole life,” he says. “Some of my first customers were Larry Bird and Reggie Miller. From there, I got into the supply side and was selling these products until deciding to join Forte.” The team at Fόrte Surfaces helps
homeowners and commercial businesses extend the life of hard surfaces found in areas such as driveways, garage floors, pool decks, basements and porches, all the way up to large-scale buildings and parking garages. “We highly recommend you seal the hard surfaces around your home or business,” Kirkby says. “The hard surfaces around the exterior of your home can cost you up to 15 to 20% of your home’s value to rip out and replace. We can come in and protect that with our proprietary sealants and epoxy flooring systems so you don’t have to replace the surface.”
34 / WESTFIELD MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2023 / TownePost.com
Epoxy/polyurea flooring is a synthetic resin that not only protects the surface, but also gives a creative flair to the design. We all know what Indiana winter weather can do to our vehicles. Not only does snow and salt wreak havoc on vehicles, but it also drips onto driveways or concrete garage floors, eventually causing pits on the surfaces. The sun, snow, ice, wind and additional debris can damage concrete and stone over the years.
Kirkby says a simple clean and seal can do wonders to your property. “I don’t know any other service that can provide that ‘wow’ factor at this budget,” Kirkby says. “The biggest bang for your buck is cleaning that mold and mildew off of the surface. I think it’s just so common, people think it’s a normal thing to have this dark concrete or black limestone.” Some clients want a good pressure wash but don’t prefer a sealant, and the crew at Fόrte Surfaces can deliver, but to take things one step further, sealing the surface will prevent
further damage. “A pressure washing and sealant lasts about three to five years and there is a lifetime warranty on the epoxy flooring,” Kirkby says. “Sometimes the surface is in such bad condition the customer assumes replacement is the only option. We normally always have a solution for that surface.” Whatever the need, the team’s goal is to create long-lasting surfaces for homeowners and business owners as they work alongside each client, making the space look better than when they arrived.

DERRION SMITH

Derrion Smith, a fourth-grader at Carey Ridge Elementary School, can’t get enough of playing sports. His mother, Deona, says he enjoys every sport he is involved in. “Derrion has a major love for sports and it shows in all the sports that he partakes in,” Deona says. “For basketball, Derrion plays on Primetime Black and he plays on Grand Park Premier, which are these teams that he had to try out for amongst other kids his age. He has been on the Primetime team since he was in the second grade and started the GPP team in third grade.” Deona adds that Derrion loves competing. “Derrion participates in the Westfield Youth Sports rec league for football, which is a league of grade-level boys divided up into
equal teams where they compete weekly against each other,” Deona says. “There is also an all-stars team formed when the regular season is over. He has been chosen to be on those teams before. This is where he will be on the fourth-grade all-stars team this year as well. Lastly, he has participated in WYS baseball leagues. During his first year participating in the baseball league, he was chosen to be on the all-star team. This past season he chose not to be on the all-star team due to his basketball schedule, but was asked to fill in when needed.” Deona notes that Derrion has made a lot of friends on his various teams. “The relationships he builds with teammates from each team that he is on is what he loves about the teams that he plays on,” Deona says. Derrion also keeps improving as he continues to play, according to Deona. “Derrion is able to play any position in

basketball,” Deona says. “He is able to control the rock and play as a big man down in the paint, due to his length and his ability to score in the paint. Derrion has the ability to move his feet and create problems for the opposing team with his defense ability.” Derrion also plays multiple positions in football. “He has been used as a quarterback due to his ability of passing the ball and running the ball,” Deona says. “He had been utilized in the backfield as a running back. Derrion is normally used as a tight end and wide receiver on offense. On the defense side of the ball, he has been utilized as a defense end and sometimes he will find himself playing safety. Derrion’s favorite position in baseball is playing pitcher and first base. Derrion had success playing catcher. He also had success in the outfield.”
“Out of all three sports, his most successful teams have been his basketball teams,” Deona says. “It’s in the way they compete, play together, and the chemistry they share. We believe that the success of this team has come from playing with the same group of young boys over the years, and the quality of the training and coaching has a major impact on their success.” Derrion is also involved in other activities. “He was a student ambassador, and now is a part of student council this year,” Deona says. “Another bonus for Derrion is that he was nominated for Student of the Month when he was a second-grader, and that was a really proud moment. What Derrion loves about school is setting good examples for his peers and leading by example in the classroom. Derrion also enjoys math and playing with his friends at recess.”
Derrion has had some successful sports seasons.

Sunshine Pediatrics offers Westfield families a modern and personal approach to children’s health care. Samatha Madhavarapu, MD, known to her young patients as Dr. Sam, has embraced the direct primary care (DPC) model, a modern concept that blends traditional medical values with contemporary practices. Parents pay a monthly or annual membership fee, and in exchange they receive personalized, quality care. Madhavarapu was drawn to the concept of a concierge-style practice after 11 years of experience. After completing a pediatric residency in New York, she was on staff at a federally qualified health center in Muncie and worked in Kokomo. She and her family have lived in Westfield since 2014. “Westfield is growing and there is an increased need for pediatric services here,” she says. “I am a parent myself with two children aged 7 and 9, and I know what it’s like to have to wait for a call back from a nurse. Sunshine Pediatrics is close to my home, only three minutes away, and I am always accessible to parents. Members can text or call me at any time.” “During the time I was in Kokomo, I saw 25 to 30 patients a day,” she continues. “A nurse would take up some of the time, and I ended up with just five to 10 minutes per patient. I felt like I needed more time per patient to have a quality and meaningful visit. With the DPC model the middleman
is taken away, and while families can still use insurance for billing and membership fees, it is less about what insurance dictates what we can do. Now I can allot 30 to 60 minutes per visit, guaranteeing comprehensive attention to each child’s needs.”
Although members are always the priority, Sunshine Pediatrics will see nonmembers for an acute visit if a family can’t see their own pediatrician in a timely manner. Vaccines and ear piercings are also available to nonmembers by appointment.
“I believe lifestyle plays a big factor in our health,” Madhavarapu says. “I have created YouTube videos with topics such as how to build a connection with your teen, yoga, and food allergies versus intolerances. I take a whole approach to health, which Madhavarapu shares that when she was the includes physical, emotional and mental parent of a newborn, it “took a village” to get well-being. I started the practice in Westfield out of the house and get to the pediatrician because I felt the need to do something on for an infant wellness appointment. In my own. Everyone loves the convenience response, Sunshine Pediatrics offers a factor of Sunshine Pediatrics, but for me newborn home package. It includes three the connections and bonds that are being wellness visits and up to two sick/urgent made is the most satisfying. I feel I am doing visits, all at the patient’s home. Plus, parents something right.” have unlimited telemedicine visits and direct access to Dr. Sam. Sunshine Pediatrics is located at 16156 Spring Mill Road in Westfield.
