MARY KATE SLOAN
Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided
Mary Kate Sloan, a senior at Westfield High School, recently achieved a perfect Advanced Placement (AP) score. She earned every point possible on the AP 2-D Art and Design exam, receiving the maximum score on each portion. “AP photo is a one-trimester class offered at Westfield High School,” Sloan says. “During this time we create a digital portfolio surrounding our chosen sustained investigation topic. The digital portfolio includes 15 digital images, which answer our sustained investigation question, five digital images of our best work, and typed responses to writing prompts.” Sloan notes that the test is different from other exams, which is something she enjoyed. 6 | February 2024 | TownePost.com
“Instead of a traditional exam, we work on creating this portfolio all trimester long, which is electronically submitted to College Board in the last week of the class,” Sloan says. “Outside of class I would work to take photos. Therefore, in class, I could spend quality time editing and Photoshopping my work.” Sloan enjoyed her work, which included coming up with a sustained investigation question. “My sustained investigation question was, ‘What are the complex mechanisms that transform a raw product into the perfect food that is seen on a shelf?’” she says. Sloan was excited upon learning of her score. “I was shocked when I found out that I had received a perfect score on the exam,” she says. “I took AP photo because of my passion for art and to learn more about the techniques of a camera, so I never expected to receive a perfect score on the exam.”
Sloan is busy making plans for the future.
Lindsay Frey and John Sterling.
“I am planning to attend the University of Tennessee to study biology on a premedicine track,” Sloan says. “I would like to become either a pediatrician or a physician’s assistant. However, I am interested in the field of entrepreneurship as well.”
She believes students at Westfield High School get a lot of help finding out what they want to do in the future.
Sloan also finds time for school activities. “I am involved in Westfield High School Dance Marathon, Distributive Education Clubs of America, and I run cross-country,” Sloan says. Sloan says she enjoys school and has received a lot of help from her teachers,
“I love how each student is able to express themselves in a unique way, and create their own personalized journey through the classes and clubs that are offered,” she says. “Although I am interested in studying medicine in the future, our curriculum allowed me to gain experience in a class such as AP photo. I am thankful to receive guidance and learning experiences in subjects I am at first unfamiliar with.”

A Beginner’s Guide to Health and Wellness Story & Photography Provided
Embarking on a journey toward improved health and wellness can be both exciting and rewarding. For beginners, understanding the fundamentals of nutrition and exercise is key to establishing a foundation for a healthier lifestyle. This comprehensive guide aims to provide valuable insights and practical tips to kickstart your journey toward a balanced and fulfilling approach to well-being. Before beginning these lifestyle changes, please consult your local health care professional.
NUTRITION BASICS FOR BEGINNERS 1. BALANCED DIET
A balanced diet is the cornerstone of good health. Aim to include a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats in your meals. This diversity ensures that your body receives the essential nutrients it needs to function optimally.
2. HYDRATION Staying hydrated is crucial for overall health. Aim to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Consider replacing sugary drinks with water, herbal teas or infused water for added flavor without the extra calories.
3. PORTION CONTROL Pay attention to portion sizes to avoid overeating. Use smaller plates, listen to your body’s hunger and fullness cues, and savor each bite. Eating mindfully can help prevent mindless overconsumption.
4. LIMIT PROCESSED FOODS Minimize your intake of processed and sugary foods. These items are often high in unhealthy fat, sugar and salt, contributing to weight gain and negatively impacting overall health.
5. MEAL PLANNING Plan your meals in advance to ensure you have nutritious options readily available. Preparing meals at home allows you to control ingredients and make healthier choices.
EXERCISE ESSENTIALS FOR BEGINNERS
INTEGRATING NUTRITION AND EXERCISE
If you’re new to exercise, begin with lowintensity activities. Walking, swimming or cycling are excellent choices for beginners. Gradually increase the intensity and duration as your fitness level improves.
Consider the timing of your meals in relation to your workouts. Eating a balanced meal or snack before exercising can provide the necessary energy, while post-exercise nutrition aids in recovery.
2. SET REALISTIC GOALS
2. SEEK PROFESSIONAL GUIDANCE
1. START SLOW
Establish achievable and realistic fitness goals. Whether it’s walking for 30 minutes a day or completing a short workout routine, setting attainable goals will keep you motivated.
1. TIMING MATTERS
3. MIX IT UP
If possible, consult with a nutritionist or fitness professional, especially when starting a new regimen. They can provide personalized advice based on your individual needs and goals.
Variety is key to maintaining interest and preventing boredom. Incorporate a mix of cardiovascular exercises (e.g., walking, jogging) and strength training (e.g., bodyweight exercises, light weights) to target different muscle groups and improve overall fitness.
3. CELEBRATE PROGRESS Acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small. Whether it’s completing a workout or choosing a nutritious meal, recognizing progress fosters a positive mindset and motivates continued efforts.
4. PRIORITIZE CONSISTENCY OVER INTENSITY
4. BUILD A SUPPORT SYSTEM
Consistency is crucial in building a sustainable exercise routine. Aim for regular, moderate-intensity workouts rather than sporadic high-intensity sessions. Consistency leads to lasting results.
Surround yourself with a supportive community. Share your goals with friends and family, or join fitness classes or groups. Having a support system can provide encouragement and accountability.
5. LISTEN TO YOUR BODY Pay attention to how your body responds to exercise. If you experience pain (not to be confused with the normal discomfort of a challenging workout), give yourself time to recover and consider adjusting your routine.
Health and wellness for beginners involves understanding the fundamentals of nutrition and exercise. By incorporating balanced nutrition, gradual and consistent exercise, and mindful lifestyle choices, individuals can pave the way for a healthier and more fulfilling life. Remember, small changes add up over time, and the key is to find a sustainable and enjoyable approach that aligns with your personal preferences and goals. 12 | February 2024 | TownePost.com
NAVIGATING VACCINES AS AN ADULT Writer / Julia Miller, Manager of Inpatient Pharmacy at IU Health North
KNOW WHICH VACCINES ARE RECOMMENDED Julia Miller
Vaccinations aren’t just for the young—they are an essential pillar of health maintenance, particularly as we age. For individuals aged 55 and older, staying up to date with vaccinations can significantly fortify overall well-being.
ADDRESSING COMMON CONCERNS It’s understandable that many people are nervous to introduce vaccines into their bodies. Two common concerns are safety and vaccine efficacy, or how effective it will be. Most vaccine side effects are quite mild and could include things such as arm pain or a fever. Severe or persisting side effects are rare. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) constantly monitors vaccine side effects. No vaccine can fully protect you from a disease all the time. This is especially true for vaccines focusing on viruses that change often, such as influenza and COVID-19. Even if you do experience infection, the vaccine should lower the severity of the sickness.
There are several vaccines recommended for adults. They include: Influenza (Flu) Vaccine Annual flu shots are highly recommended for adults. People over 65 years of age should receive a higher dose flu vaccine. COVID-19 Vaccine For individuals aged 55 and above, getting vaccinated against COVID-19 remains a critical step in safeguarding against severe illness, hospitalization and complications associated with the virus. Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis (Tdap) Vaccine A one-time Tdap vaccine booster is suggested for adults who haven’t received it previously, followed by a tetanus-diphtheria (Td) or Tdap booster every ten years. This vaccine guards against tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough. Measles, Mumps and Rubella Vaccines All Adults born after 1957 without a previous vaccine or laboratory evidence of immunity or disease should be vaccinated with MMR. This is a live vaccine and should not be given if a person is immunocompromised. Varicella (Chickenpox) Vaccine Adults with no evidence of immunity to varicella should get this vaccine. Shingles Vaccine Shingles, caused by the varicella-zoster
virus, can cause a painful rash and long-term nerve pain, especially in older adults. The shingles vaccine, available as Shingrix, is recommended for individuals aged 50 and older. Pneumococcal Vaccine Pneumococcal disease can lead to pneumonia, meningitis, and bloodstream infections, posing heightened risks for older individuals. The CDC recommends two pneumococcal vaccines for those over 65. Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Vaccines Adults 60 years and older are recommended to receive a single dose of RSV vaccine if their healthcare provider thinks it would be beneficial. Hepatitis Vaccines Multiple two, three and four dose vaccine series are available for Hepatitis A and B. Adults under 60 are recommended to get one of the series of hepatitis B vaccines. Adults older than 60 with certain risk factors should receive a hepatitis B vaccine. All other adults 60 and older may receive the series. Hepatitis A vaccines are not routinely recommended for most adults. It is important to consider your individual health status, allergies, and potential interactions with existing medications. Ask your primary care provider or pharmacist which vaccinations make the most sense for your specific health needs. To find a provider near you, visit iuhealth.org/ primarycare.

A WELLNESS CHALLENGE FOR OUR COMMUNITY Writer / Scott Fussell Photography Provided
“Why am I so tired?”
“Set a goal. Stress. Achieve. Repeat. That’s what I do.”
“I can’t believe I just barked at my son like that. Why am I so edgy?” “No way I’m going to make the game. He’ll understand. “Only had my C game today. Hope Always does.” it was enough for them to sign.” “Something’s missing. We aren’t “I’ll pick up something on the way as close as we used to be.” home. They won’t miss me.” “Great job out there, but early in “The money’s great, but there’s got the game you should’ve…” to be something more.” “I just don’t get it. If you’ve said, heard or felt any of these statements, you’re not alone. You just may not know it. We as a community are often hesitant to say these things out loud, or reflect on the short- and long-term impact. In communities like ours, many feel enormous pressure for friends, neighbors, fellow church members and coworkers to think we’ve got everything completely together. Smart, vibrant and entrepreneurial are three of the adjectives marketers use to describe our community. We’d love to add introspective, brave, authentic and connected to that list. At The Shift Initiative, we’re built to shift the way people think, talk, act and care about mental health and wellness. What’s that look like for our community? What can you do right now? Here are 10 things you can do immediately to make the shift.
1. EMBRACE REALITY. Times, people and needs change. We can’t rely on what we’ve always done. Talk to your kids, loved ones and friends. Ask questions, listen actively, take a parenting or communications class, shift your approach and watch your relationships grow.
2. MAINTAIN A TEAM ATTITUDE.
Our schools, local practices and area nonprofits all offer incredible resources. You’re not in this alone. Be brave enough to lean on their expertise.
3. THINK LIKE A MULTI-SPORT ATHLETE.
Wellness requires a multifaceted approach. Nourish your mind, body, spiritual and relational health.
When it comes to her banking, Katie’s a Farmer. Katie Douglas-Poe Customer Since 2021
4. KEEP IT SIMPLE.
Ten minutes of yoga. Two minutes of breathing. Hydration. Rest. For some, it can be that simple. As Glennon Doyle says, “When feelings are big, think small.”
5. GET OUTSIDE.
Need to get grounded? Spend time outside. Visit a park. Take a hike. Literally lay on the ground. Seriously.
6. GET OUTSIDE… OF YOURSELF.
Fifty percent of Americans suffer from isolation and loneliness. What can you do to prevent it? Connect. Share. Serve. Listen.
7. EXTEND GRACE.
Everyone is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Choose kindness always.
8. EXTEND THAT SAME GRACE TO YOURSELF.
Would you let someone talk to a loved one the way you sometimes talk to yourself? Absolutely not. Turn off the negative talk track that’s on a loop between your ears.
9. SHIFT YOUR PERSPECTIVE.
We have choices. Choose to see and say the greatness all around you.
10. TELL YOUR STORY.
Being honest with ourselves and being willing to share our stories is essential. We’ll never truly be “Stigma-Free Fishers” until I’m able to tell you about my son or daughter’s anxiety and depression as easily as you tell me about your kiddo tearing his ACL at soccer last week. Over the past few years we’ve shared our story a lot. One thing we’ve learned and taken great comfort in is realizing we’re not alone…far from it. Of the playlist above, our primary challenge to you is to tell your story openly, honestly and unfiltered. You’ll be amazed by the stories, connection and support you receive in return. For more information, details on speaking engagements, or programming opportunities, contact Scott Fussell at scott@ shiftinitiative.org, or follow The Shift Initiative on Facebook, Instagram, X, and Threads.

CRUCIAL COUNSELING
MINDFIT COUNSELING IMPLEMENTS RESEARCH-BASED PRACTICES Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Ron Wise
The mission of MindFit Counseling is to provide collaborative care through advanced and progressive modalities that treat the whole person. The team of highly trained, licensed therapists work with all ages to address issues and develop strategies to get back on the path of a happy and successful life. Services offered include individual and marriage counseling, play and art therapy, brainspotting, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), and psychiatry/medication management.
trained in EMDR, brainspotting, or both therapies. EMDR uses vision to help people renegotiate trauma, and is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms of emotional distress caused by a disturbing experience. Brainspotting processes traumas by having an individual visually focus on a spot, which stimulates the uncovering of thoughts and paves the way to healing.
Cannon, who is a veteran, is a proponent of brainspotting. MindFit hosts many master’s-level interns, and Cannon trains them in brainspotting. She feels that an excellent therapist is attuned to their clients. Being cognizant of when a patient’s breathing picks up or slows down, and other physical cues, is a skill that can be taught. Although MindFit does not accept insurance for marriage or couples counseling, it does work with major insurance companies for all other types of therapy. To request an appointment, a form can be accessed on the practice’s website.
The website has valuable information such as frequently asked questions, resources that include recommended books with links to Amazon.com, physical and mental health website links, plus a blog with beneficial and informative articles. It also explains the different types of therapy offered. “I wish more people knew the existence of the modalities we use,” Cannon says. “Everyone is different in what works for them and there are other options than talk therapy. Our goal is to help you find healing in the most effective way possible.”

CARMEL RESIDENT OFFERS SKIN CARE EXPERTISE THE SKIN IS THE BODY’S LARGEST ORGAN — AND CARMEL RESIDENT DR. MELANIE KINGSLEY BELIEVES EVERYONE NEEDS TO HAVE AN EFFECTIVE SKIN CARE REGIMEN. However, for a long time, she couldn’t bring herself to wholeheartedly endorse any products out there. So, the board-certified and fellowship-trained dermatologist founded SkinTherapyMD, which operates out of Zionsville and manufactures her own formulations for treating the most common skin care concerns. “Throughout my career as a dermatologist, the two most common concerns I heard from patients were about acne and how to slow or reverse the aging process,” Dr. Kingsley said. “After years of trying different products and various treatment regimens, I just wasn’t satisfied with the options available. That’s why I created the CAMU skin care lines — natural, high-quality skin care products that are effective, simple to use, free of unnecessary chemicals and gentle on the skin.”
by combining the most effective ingredients into one formulation to give patients the desired results. “Both regimens consist of two simple steps — an exfoliating pad to help remove the dead skin cells and allow the nutrients into the skin; and then a serum to deliver and seal in the essential ingredients,” Dr. Kingsley said. “It is the power duo.” The CAMU ClearSkin Bundle is now available with the serum and wipes — with or without a cleanser. And the CAMU Anti-Aging Bundle is now available with the resurfacing pads and moisturizing serum — with or without the gentle hydrating cleanser. “It’s been so rewarding developing this skin care line and seeing the benefits it has brought to so many people,” Dr. Kingsley said.
These products use ingredients Dr. Kingsley found to be most effective across nearly 20 years of treating patients.
Dr. Kingsley stands by these products professionally and personally, offering them not only to patients but also using them to treat friends, family and herself.
CAMU ClearSkin is specifically targeted toward acne-prone patients with oily skin, clogged pores or inflamed acne bumps. The product line helps treat acne, exfoliate the skin and seal in hydration while promoting a healthy skin barrier.
SkinTherapyMD is continually updating formulations and adding products for all skin types, which are available for customers to purchase as needed or on a monthly subscription basis. These products can be found online at skintherapymd.com or in local medical spas and dermatology offices as they expand throughout 2024.
CAMU Anti-Aging helps slow and reverse the signs of sun damage and aging, lightens brown spots and softens fine lines and wrinkles. It also helps adult acne, rosacea and keratosis pilaris and reduces the visibility of pores. Both the CAMU ClearSkin and CAMU Anti-Aging lines remove several steps from your skin care routine

THEY’VE GOT THE TOUCH THE TEAM AT REVIVE SALON & SPA STUDIO FOCUSES ON A NATURAL APPROACH TO AESTHETICS Writer / Renee Larr Photographer / Ron Wise
When Leslie Wright was at a career crossroads, she prayed about what to do. She wanted to feel a sense of community, help people feel better and revive people’s souls. She felt a strong calling and opened Revive Salon & Spa Studio in 2006 in Noblesville. Since then, the salon has grown from a one-employee operation to a pillar of the small-business community. “I had some things falling apart regarding where I was working,” Wright says. “I was working for other people and it just wasn’t working out. I knew I wanted to open my salon and pour into the community.” Revive Salon offers men’s, women’s and children’s hair services, facials and waxing, hair extensions, permanent makeup,

massage therapy and more. Wright says her salon is focused on a natural approach to aesthetics, so customers won’t find injectables such as Botox at Revive Salon. “We focus more on things like microneedling and microdermabrasion peels so your body can heal naturally, without putting foreign substances into the body,” Wright says. “As far as massage therapy, we offer relaxation, deep tissue, cupping, hot stone, and prenatal massages.” Wright says she feels the team at Revive has a unique opportunity to touch clients’ lives. She says just coming into the salon can sometimes be the highlight of a client’s week, and she wants to ensure they always have the best experience.
She says she works on building relationships within the community as well. “One way we do that is to give back in whatever ways we can,” Wright says. “Everyone always tells me I’m a connector. I try to link people to see how we can improve our community. We also have a boutique in the salon called Revived Threads, where we sell Revive gear. The proceeds go back into the community in different ways to help women.” Traditionally, bustling beauty salons serve as a way for people to join together and share culture. Revive Salon is more than just a place where people can get a haircut or a new hairstyle. Wright says the salon serves as a way for people to learn about others and build relationships.
Wright says the staff at Revive Salon are constantly learning and evolving to reflect the ever-changing industry. She brings in educators every few months and works with her staff to ensure they meet their own career goals and dreams. She says they support not only the local community, but each other as well. Revive Salon also offers what Wright calls Style Labs for parties of five to 12 at no cost. The session teaches clients tips like how to curl their hair with a flat iron. They also provide a chair massage, ultraviolet skin analysis and a hair consultation. “People can call us and we can coordinate a date for the event,” Wright says. “I do try to respect my staff ’s time because work-life balance is a huge focus for us. They also receive discounts on products purchased that night or services booked during the event.” Revive Salon is located at 16095 Prosperity Drive, Suite 400 in Noblesville. HEALTH SPOTLIGHT
What women need to know about heart disease THERE ARE MULTIPLE RISK FACTORS. There are several common risk factors that contribute to heart disease in both men and women. These include age, diet, genetics and other coexisting conditions, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. Smoking, lack of physical activity, obesity and high-stress levels also heighten the risk substantially.
Dr. Sujoy Phookan Writer / Dr. Sujoy Phookan, cardiologist at IU Health North and Saxony Hospitals
February is American Heart Month, an annual observance that encourages people across the country to focus on their cardiovascular health and live a more hearthealthy lifestyle. Historically, there has been a misconception that heart disease primarily affects men. However, the truth is starkly different. Heart disease, including coronary artery disease, is the leading cause of death among women globally, surpassing all forms of cancer combined. It is important to know the risk factors and recognize the symptoms of heart disease in women.
Conditions unique to women, including pregnancy complications, such as gestational diabetes, preeclampsia and preterm delivery, can increase the likelihood of heart disease later in life. Other conditions that predominantly affect women, such as breast cancer and autoimmune diseases, also increase the risk. Additionally, post-menopause, when estrogen levels decline, women’s risk of heart disease rises.
and adopt a heart-healthy diet which limits processed carbohydrates, excess sugar and saturated fats, while including plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables and lean protein. Smoking cessation and stress management are also highly encouraged. Everyone should see their primary care physician yearly for routine screenings and discussion of their heart disease risk factors. Women should discuss any of their female-specific risks with their provider. Anyone who has significant concerns about heart disease can ask for a referral to a cardiologist.
LOOKING TO THE FUTURE. By fostering awareness, advocating for gender-specific research and treatment strategies, and promoting healthy lifestyle choices, we can strive towards a future where heart disease no longer claims the lives of our mothers, sisters, daughters and friends prematurely.
YOU MAY NEED TO ALTER YOUR LIFESTYLE. Addressing the risk factors of heart disease involves a multifaceted approach. Everyone should strive to get regular aerobic exercise
KNOW THE SYMPTOMS. Coronary artery disease and heart attacks often present with chest pain in both women and men. However, women also frequently present without chest pain and experience subtler symptoms, such as shortness of breath, nausea, back or jaw pain and fatigue, among others. These atypical symptoms can lead to misdiagnosis or delayed treatment.

OPTIMIZING HEALTH SOLID WELLNESS & AESTHETICS TAKES A STEP-BY-STEP, CUSTOMIZED APPROACH Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Justin Sicking

olid Wellness & Aesthetics, Westfield’s only functional medicine clinic, focuses on improving each patient’s health through lifestyle interventions and root-cause medicine. The clinic specializes in addressing gut health, thyroid issues and weight loss, as well as providing hormone balancing and bioidentical hormone replacement. Solid Wellness also specializes in natural aesthetic results through services including Dysport (similar to Botox), microneedling, medicalgrade skin care and fillers.
“I realized we weren’t really getting people better,” she says. “We were prolonging their illness by just giving them medication. It was like a revolving door. I knew that wasn’t the kind of medicine I wanted to practice, so I started learning about functional medicine.”
Marciniec describes functional medicine as an evidence-based approach to finding the root cause of illness. In contrast, traditional medicine tends to focus on reducing the symptoms of the disease with medication, but often does not identify the cause of Owner and Nurse Practitioner Kate the symptoms. Functional medicine has Marciniec started out working in emergency been gaining popularity in recent years. In medicine. As an emergency-room nurse, fact, even the Cleveland Clinic now offers she often saw patients who were having functional medicine services. “Patients issues that were mostly preventable, so she are pushing for answers that traditional medicine can’t give them,” Marciniec says. went back to school to become a nurse practitioner. After working in traditional medicine for four years, she had a revelation. Seeing a need in their own community 26 | February 2024 | TownePost.com
for functional care and natural aesthetic results, Marciniec and her nurse practitioner husband, Mike, opened Solid Wellness & Aesthetics in April of 2023 in downtown Westfield. Weight loss appointments have become one of the most sought-after services at Solid Wellness & Aesthetics. “We don’t just put people on medicine for weight loss,” Marciniec says. “We also look at what could be the root cause for why it’s so difficult for them to lose weight.” Hormones play a big role in weight gain as well. She hears from a lot of perimenopausal women who say they haven’t changed their eating habits or exercise regimen, and yet the pounds are creeping up. At Solid Wellness, they can balance hormones to help people feel better, or in cases of perimenopause or menopause, they replace
testosterone replacement, as many men are low in the hormone. “There’s so much research on the safety of testosterone and how we can prevent disease and improve symptoms by making sure that testosterone is optimized,” says Marciniec, noting that the vast majority of their male patients are husbands of their female patients who have started to feel better, so they send their husbands in for testing.
the hormones that the body is no longer making. “We use bioidentical hormones,” Marciniec says. “That’s different than, say, birth control pills, as those are synthetic hormones, which is not what your body would normally make. It’s important to differentiate the two.” Marciniec recently saw a patient who shared that when she complained to her family practitioner about how miserable her hot flashes made her, he responded, “Well, they’re not going to kill you.” “My heart broke for her,” Marciniec says. “We can help. There’s no need to suffer.” Two top complaints from women after menopause are brain fog and joint pain.
“Both testosterone and estrogen play a role in inflammation, so when we no longer have those hormones, inflammation can run rampant, and that can trigger joint pain,” Marciniec says. Solid Wellness & Aesthetics also offers hormone pellets, which are bioidentical hormones in pellet form that get absorbed over three to six months, as opposed to taking daily hormones. Marciniec reports that hormone pellets have become popular for improving energy, mood, motivation, hot flashes, brain fog, sex drive and more. “Hormone pellets are something we offer that many other practices are on a three- to four-month waiting list for,” Marciniec says.
Gut health is another area of focus for the nurse practitioners at Solid Wellness. “So much of our health is dependent on the health of our gut,” Marciniec says. “Identifying imbalances in the gut can improve gassiness and bloating, weight gain, joint pain and more.” Another popular area of service at Solid Wellness is aesthetics. Offering Dysport, fillers, microneedling and skin care, they focus on natural results and spend a lot of time educating their patients about their options. “Getting aesthetic services can be intimidating,” Marciniec says. “We offer a place to learn about aesthetic options, with no pressure to have a treatment done. We want our clients to feel comfortable getting their questions answered, and know they will have a natural result. Our nurse practitioners have a combined 14 years of experience in the aesthetic field.”
Solid Wellness is a small, intimate practice consisting of the Marciniecs, their Office Nurse Practitioner Mike Marciniec leads the Manager Tina Curry, and Family Nurse clinic’s men’s health program. He sees male Practitioner Alyssa Barr. This means patients for weight loss services as well as relationships are cultivated quickly and TownePost.com | February 2024 | 27
providing quality care is their priority. “Our goal is to teach patients how to improve their health and not need us anymore,” Marciniec says. “One aspect of our practice that separates us from others is that we take the time to really get to know our patients,” Marciniec adds. “There’s an old saying in medicine that if you listen to a patient long enough, they’ll tell you what’s wrong with them. There is nothing more rewarding than to have someone come in tired, anxious, not sleeping, with gut issues, and within a few months, be smiling, energetic and thankful to us for changing their life.” Contact Solid Wellness & Aesthetics to schedule an appointment to optimize your health or schedule a free aesthetic consultation. CARDON AND ASSOCIATES ANNOUNCES COPPER TRACE EXPANSION $8.6 MILLION PROJECT MORE THAN DOUBLES ASSISTED LIVING APARTMENT Story and Photography Provided
Senior living management company CarDon & Associates is proud to announce an $8.6 million expansion of its Westfield community, Copper Trace, located on the northeast corner of 146th Street and Ditch Road at 1250 West 146th Street. The complex opened in 2015 with 36 assisted-living apartments as well as four neighborhoods, each with 26 skilled nursing suites. The first phase of the complex cost $19 million, with a 116,000-square-foot building on approximately 16 acres. Planning for the addition began in July of 2022 with construction starting in late September of 2023. Architectural and interior design firm Studio Three Design developed the look of the expansion, while long-running renovation company Summit Construction is overseeing the building
process. The expansion will more than double the number of assisted-living apartments, with the 40 new units consisting of 27 onebedroom, six large one-bedroom, and seven two-bedroom residences. “This expansion will comfortably accommodate the growing needs of seniors in Westfield and surrounding communities,” said CarDon President and CEO Kent Rodgers. “It offers opportunities for seniors who want to remain self-sufficient with the assurance of assistance when needed, as well as individuals coming out of shortterm rehabilitation who might benefit from assisted-living care.” Other benefits of the expansion include such new amenities as a renovated dining
room, coffee bar, fitness room and new lounge/activity area. This will add 37,500 square feet to the main campus building. The assisted-living apartments are expected to be open and available by late summer 2024. ABOUT CARDON & ASSOCIATES

ACHIEVE THERAPY SERVICES SPECIALIZES IN ASSISTING BREAST CANCER AND OTHER ONCOLOGY PATIENTS Writer / Michelle Kaufman Photographer / Ron Wise
Denise Johnson, PT, CLT has transformed a home near Westfield High School into a physical therapy practice specializing in helping breast cancer and other oncology patients. Johnson has been working with breast cancer patients for more than 30 years. Several years ago she had a lump on her breast. It wasn’t cancer, but that experience led her to a calling of helping those who have been affected. “I love to see them through their journey, 30 | February 2024 | TownePost.com
and help them with their movement or with pain,” Johnson said. “It’s just a feeling that I have that this is where I’m supposed to be.” Achieve Therapy Services opened last year, and Johnson strives to make the facility feel non-medicinal and make people feel comfortable. Johnson said breast cancer patients are scared and going through a lot, and she wants to help them through every step along their journey. “Our vision was that it would be a place of healing,” Johnson said. “To see the women
light up when they didn’t think they could either get through something or ever be able to do something - we’re going to get you there. This practice is for them; it was specifically set up to help the oncology patient.” The name Achieve reflects Johnson’s desire to see her clients conquer their goals, which can include full mobility and independence. She treats lymphedema, scar pain, motion issues and more. Some of her patients were diagnosed a
decade ago and are now experiencing tightness or other issues. Others are currently going through treatment, and Achieve can help them before or after surgery. “I do see a lot of patients post-surgery,” Johnson said. “They might have just had their mastectomy or lumpectomy, and now they’re preparing for radiation, where they have to get their arm up over their head. A lot of the doctors rely on me or another physical therapist to get that patient’s movement better so they can go through the radiation.” Johnson’s husband, Jerry, also works at Achieve to support not only his wife, but the spouses of the patients through conversation. Both take pride in their work. “Being at the front desk, it’s an opportunity
to build relationships with new people who are looking for help, and we really want to provide that,” Jerry said. New patients often get an order for therapy from their doctor’s office, and then Johnson will call them so they can ask questions and get to know her. “A lot of women don’t have any idea what physical therapy can do for them,” she said. “They think of physical therapy as exercise and that’s not untrue, but I do a lot of manual work, mostly hands-on work. It might take me 10 minutes to schedule someone or it might take me a half hour. I just let them ask away.” Achieve Therapy Services is located at 758 North Union Street in Westfield.
