A LIFELONG VISION FOR DR. NYTARSHA THOMAS

from Nigeria, Tobe and his family settled in the San Francisco area when he was 8 years old. Like Dr. Thomas, through hard work and the supporting efforts of his family, he was able to attend quality academic institutions and to attain his lifelong dream of being a pilot.

Opening Visionelle Eyecare, located at 6618 Whitestown Parkway, Zionsville, is the culmination of a lifelong dream for Dr. Nytarsha Thomas. It’s a dream that sprang from humble beginnings and that was made possible by the hard work of Dr. Thomas and her family.

Dr. Thomas grew up in very modest surroundings in the Houston area. She credits her family for constantly making the sacrifices of time and energy to provide her the best academic opportunities possible. Dr. Thomas fondly remembers

her grandfather frequently driving her long distances, so she could attend the better schools in the area. These efforts were rewarded when she received an academic scholarship to attend Texas Southern University. From there, she received her Doctorate in Optometry (OD) from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO), one of the oldest and most prestigious optometry schools in the country.

Dr. Thomas and her husband Tobe moved to the Zionsville area in 2013. Tobe’s life story is not unlike his wife’s. As immigrants 6 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2016 / atZionsville.com

Tobe said he can remember being in Nigeria as a small boy looking up to see planes flying overhead and dreaming of flying them one day. Currently, he flies Embrair 170 jets for Republic Airways.

It was a relocation by Republic Airways that brought the Thomas’ to the Zionsville area. Dr. Thomas said they chose Zionsville because of its proximity to the airport, and they simply fell in love with the community.

As part of Dr. Thomas’ studies at optometry school, she received specialized training and practical experience in pediatric optometry.

DESIGN IMPACT DARIN GRICE CREATES NEW PROTECTIVE HEADGEAR

The following day, Grice investigated the patent process and has since received patent protection for his innovative design.

“I’m an art teacher,” says Grice, who is also a freelance artist. “You don’t need to be a business genius to see that there is a real need for this.”

The reactionary design technology utilizes three layers acting as a system to absorb and disperse impact energy. The standard sports helmet shell consists of a one piece hard inflexible material and Grice thinks this is where new technology can make the biggest impact in reducing injurious forces.

Grice found technology gaps and realized that most of the technological focus for helmet improvements was being done after impact whereas his device is centered on what can be done at impact.

Gallienne’s father was raised in the Amish community, and during the time of his Rumspringa, he met Gallienne’s mother and ultimately chose to live outside of the community. Her father decided to remain in the Middlebury area, near Goshen, Indiana, and raise his family near his Amish roots.

Gallienne’s passion for baked goods, fresh foods and a strong work ethic was derived from growing up near the family farm and her exposure to the Amish ways of life.

“I currently live in Westfield with my husband and two sons, but my family still lives in the Goshen and Middlebury areas,” Gallienne said. “I loved growing up and being with my Amish relatives. I would play with the animals on the farm and spend a lot of time there. It was wonderful, and it was simple. I inherited a strong work ethic

Gallienne spoke about how her passion for baking was nurtured by her aunts who were always baking donuts, cookies, pies and many other delectable treats. She would sample and “taste-test” quite often in their kitchens. Her grandmother, who suffered a stroke and was confined to a wheelchair, would bake or prepare treats or snacks for her guests in spite of her condition. This was her grandmother’s polite gesture to thank her visitors. This resonated with Gallienne, and this, along with many other Amish mannerisms, remain an important part of Gallienne’s philosophy of how to care for one’s family and members of one’s community.

“Since our grand opening last December, the community has been great to us,” Gallienne expressed. "I have customers walk in, and they thank me for being here.

It made me realize the importance of telling your local merchants that you are glad that they are there. It made me start to do that more often myself. I am having fun, and I want to share the good tasting products that I was raised on with my community here.

“I bring in fresh baked good and products from Amish suppliers and distributors from northern Indiana. We are open Wednesday through Saturday. The Amish reserve Sundays as a day away from work and spend the day with their families. I encourage our customers to come in early on Saturdays if they would like to have products for Sundays and Mondays. We also take special orders for a variety of pies, cookies, breads and a variety of products. We can also provide sugar-free and gluten-free products upon request. We need three days advance notice for these items but are happy to provide them.”

I have personally tried their “candy crunch” topped donuts and cream filled donuts, and these have become a big hit in the Morrison household. Their sweet tiny beets and chocolate peanut crunch were also

A Noble Order Comes to Zionsville LEADING THE CRAFT CRUSADE

brewmaster Richard Shoyer to discuss how it all began, what they produce and what people can look forward to upon the grand opening of their taproom in downtown Zionsville.

What began as a hobby for the owners of Noble Order Brewing Company is now an award-winning enterprise that has expanded its operations and will be opening its first Dr. Jeffrey Haist is a cardiologist who off-site location, right here in Zionsville. practices predominantly in the Richmond, Hagerstown, Winchester and Oxford, The Zionsville Magazine team took a Ohio areas. It has since become a popular venue for locals, tourists, weddings and the annual “Viking Festival.” The Haists maintain a couple acres of vineyard and 600 plants and produce a quarter of the grapes that are used to produce their wines.

“My neighbor who lives behind me and I decided that we wanted to grow a vineyard, and so we prepared the land and installed the growing posts,” Dr. Haist recalled and chuckled. "People who drove by probably thought that we were building Fort Knox.

Making wine is a passion for me. Retirement is not a word in my vocabulary, but my profession in medicine does have a shelf life.

Someday I will be too old and decrepit to be a doctor, but I’ll still be able to prune and stomp grapes.

“Seriously though, it is important to both

Mel and I to be active, outdoors and around people. The winery and brewery will enable us to do these things. I once heard, ‘When you have a winery, you’re not just selling wine; you’re selling an experience.’ We want people to enjoy our wines and beers, but we want them to enjoy the experience, whether they are at our Richmond or Zionsville locations.”

A retired high school English teacher, Mike Miller met the Haists and had been assisting them with various tasks on their property. Dr. Jeff Haist approached Miller with an idea to expand their production and open the state’s first winery and brewery facility. Miller’s passion for brewing had now become a entrepreneurial endeavor.

He retired from teaching, teamed up with the Haists and brought Shoyer on as their brewmaster.

“I got into craft beer early in the mid-1980s at Grateful Dead shows and discovered pale ale before it was popular,” Miller said. “After a stint in the Army, I met Richard Shoyer and began brewing at his personal brewery.

We were making beers that you just couldn’t buy in the local market yet. We started brewing in 2010 in a small space here on the property that was literally a chicken coop.”

With the help of the Richmond High School Trades class, they were able to build up and expand their on-site facilities.

They went from a 1/2 barrel to a 15 barrel brewing system, producing more than just a growler of beer per batch to a little over 2,000 barrels a year.

Miller said that they will be expanding again due to the rise of demand and will be producing around 5,000 barrels this year.

Their taproom, which they anticipate

opening to the public in early to mid-March 2016, will feature beers, meads and wines produced at their Richmond facility, and as a tribute to their expansion into Boone County, they will feature 16-17 beers that they regularly have on tap. In addition, they will be introducing their “all Boone County” beers that are made with local ingredients from Sugar Creek Malt Co. in Boone County. They are finishing production of their Indiana Pale Ale that they plan to have on tap soon after their opening.

“We will bring in our Blood Orange Wheat ABV 5.6%, the beer that put us on the craft beer map,” Miller said. “Our customers will also be able to enjoy our seasonal Katapult ABV 5.1%, a light German Kölsch-style ale that is lagered for six weeks, and our Tobias Apricot IPA ABV 7.8%, a strong version of a traditional English IPA made with Noble English Hops and English yeast. With earthy and fruit flavors from the substantial hops used, this beer is not as dry and bitter as American IPAs. The addition of apricots adds a great blend of hops and fruit to make a clean and enjoyable beer. This is available year-round.”

When asked about the style of their craft beers, meads and porters, Miller explained the origin and philosophies of their brewing methods.

“We brew strictly European style beers,” he stated. "We stick to the traditional brewing methods of the originating countries. For example, we brew beers that are traditional in Germany like Kölschs, Oktoberfest and Dunkles. We brew traditional ales from England such as IPAs and others like the Russian Imperial stouts, Scottish ales, Belgium beers, French Farm House Saisons and wheat beers.

“We do put a twist on some of those.

Our Blood Orange Wheat is a German wheat beer aged on blood oranges. Our Tobias is a traditional English IPA aged on apricots. Then there are some things that we adhere to the strict guidelines of the Reinheitsgrebot, the German purity law from 1516 that requires that beer made in Germany only contain three ingredients: water, barley and hops. (Yeast, unknown in 1516, was only added to the list of permissible ingredients in 1993.)

Miller told us that while they continue to expand their eastern Indiana/western Ohio territory, Zionsville was the location that “spoke to them” when searching for a place, closer in proximity to Indianapolis, for their taproom.

“Following the Sun King and Upland Brewing models, we sought input from their owners when we were looking at locations,” Miller said. “We attended the Whitestown Brew Fest in 2015 that was

put on by IndianaOnTap.com. We fell in love with area. We met Ben Worrell, the Boone Bounty Economic Development Corporation Business Development Manager, and began looking for some places in Zionsville. We knew immediately that this was the right place.”

The Noble Order Taproom and its owners are community minded and believe in supporting other local businesses. They will continue to introduce themselves to the area restaurants and food-related businesses to encourage the patrons of their taproom to bring in their favorite foods while they sit in the warm and inviting ambiance that will be appointed with a blend of 10th and 11th century flare, a hint of Victorian and post-modern twists.

Their ultimate goal for their Zionsville location is to eventually expand the back area of the building and begin a “Home Brewers” Club. They would provide instruction and tips and share experiences with local hobbyists. They will also feature their members’ beers on tap.

They will provide local, acoustic music at their Zionsville taproom and will be open seven days a week.

RepuCare Founder, President and CEO Billie Dragoo has an office so heavily decorated with awards and accolades that it appears to be a trophy room at a Hall of Fame museum.

Dragoo is honored to have received every award proudly displayed in her office.

When asked about her most coveted achievement or award, Dragoo doesn’t hesitate to say “the Central Indiana Business Hall of Fame Junior Achievement Award I received alongside fellow Laureates David Simon (SIMON Group), Dave P. Lindsey (Defender Direct) and Michael Smith (Anthem) the same year.”

Make no mistake, Dragoo is a champion.

She is a celebrated champion of her efforts to help others, namely women business owners. Dragoo’s story is inspirational of course. As a single mom of two young children, she started a business based in her home providing healthcare staffing which has flourished over the years.

But it’s not the struggles she has experienced or a sad tale that defines Dragoo. The truly compelling nature of why crystal trophies litter her office space is simple. It’s Dragoo’s method and her mindset that has brought her success. She didn’t trip the prom queen and throw the PTO moms under the bus; she has simply lived a life of service by reaching out to

help other women around her achieve their dreams.

“You help one woman in business, you help a thousand,” says Dragoo. Her friend, Deborah Collins Stephens, bestselling author and former Silicon Valley venture capitalist, adds. “The ripple effect of helping just one woman cascades to others. The outreach is profound.”

There is still a long way to go with measurable statistics supporting why companies should support diversity in business. Studies show that women-led teams in large companies outperform those led by men. Women-owned businesses give back more to their communities and are found to be more efficient.

“You help one woman in business, you help a thousand.”

When Dragoo was looking for funding to expand her business, she was rejected. “I had a solid pitch deck, and there was not a single institution wanting to invest in my service-based company,” says Dragoo, “until Carol Curran stepped in and put up her own money.”

Carol Curran, CEO of Phoenix Data Corp, created a ripple with her investment in RepuCare, for the money enabled RepuCare to expand and subsequently purchase another womanowned business. The ripple turned into a wave.

This experience propelled Dragoo to facilitate profound policy change in regards to venture money for women.

Most service-driven companies are owned by women. Finding capital for service-based businesses has been nearly impossible. Dragoo takes credit for the start of the Indiana Diversity Investment Fund as she should.

“I believe that if you are in a position to extend your hand and bring someone forward, you do it,” says Curran. “My investment in Billie’s company enabled her to help someone else directly. We are all proud of that.”

Collins Stephens adds, “Billie has opened doors for so many women in this state.

Entrepreneur Sheryl Matthys combines her diverse skill set and her passion for helping other female business owners with her Successful Women Made Here monthly networking group.

While working as a news reporter at an NBC affiliate in South Bend, Matthys was moonlighting with a videographer filming material for “Real Stories of the Highway Patrol” with the Indiana State Police.

“I’ve always worked hard and kept busy,” says Matthys. Given her background in radio and TV, Matthys credits her work ethic to her father, a hardworking farmer in South Bend.

She attained a master’s degree from Butler to become a television journalist. As an adjunct professor, Matthys taught at the University of Notre Dame and St. Mary’s College before moving to New York City with her husband, Todd Conner, WRTV6 Anchor.

Matthys started auditioning for different jobs while living in NYC. “My biggest claim to fame is a Viagra commercial,” says Matthys with a smile. “My mom was quick to tell people that it was not my husband in the commercial.”

In addition to the commercials, Matthys started an online dog lovers dating site called “Leashes and Lovers” which included live events of Where Dog Lovers Meet. She gained so much interesting fodder from the events, she turned the event interviews on

Dawn Parker is a Zionsville health coach who helps clients discover the best nutrition for their unique needs, whether they have a food intolerance or other concerns. She initially worked in pharmaceutical sales but made a career change after discovering a passion for holistic nutrition. I spoke with her recently to learn more about what healthy living, and particularly healthy eating, should look like for all of us.

You’ve written a book called “The Healthy Chocoholic.” Does that title describe you?

I am a chocolate lover – I eat it every single day. I’m also a healthy eater, so I guess it does!

Is chocolate good for us?

It can be. It depends on what is done to it. Chocolate comes from the cacao bean, and in its whole form, it’s healthy – full of antioxidants and minerals. It’s what most companies do to cacao that makes it unhealthy, like removing nutritious elements and adding refined sugar.

Many people think healthy food and delicious food are not the same thing. What do you say to that?

There is that misconception. Interestingly, a client just texted me about this. I had introduced her to a new snack, and she said, “I think I need to stop myself, or I’ll eat this whole bag!” It was a really healthy food, and she was surprised to find it was absolutely delicious.

What other health myths have you uncovered?

One of the biggest myths is that people think they are going to get a

certain disease because it runs in their family. The good news is that genetics is only a small part of it. You can make changes to reduce your risk of whatever your family is facing.

You place a high value on the role of nutrition in being healthy.

What’s the biggest problem: eating too much in general, eating too many unhealthy foods or not eating enough of the healthiest choices?

It’s mostly the last one. People can make one small change at a time, adding in more healthy foods and swapping out unhealthy foods, and over time, the good foods crowd out the unhealthy ones.

How often do people not even realize that a health problem may be related to food?

Very often! Most clients aren’t coming to me saying, “I know I have a food intolerance. Help me find it.” They’re saying, “I have this issue…,” and oftentimes, I’ll uncover a food intolerance as I work with them.

What are the most common food intolerances you see?

Gluten and dairy. Nuts are another big one, but that’s more of a true allergy than an intolerance.

Should everyone avoid gluten?

Not everybody has a problem with gluten. But wheat is very different than it was in years past. And gluten is much more prevalent in our food supply. It’s added to foods that don’t normally have it. Those two things have made it a bigger issue recently.

What’s the best way to go about making the needed changes?

I recommend revising one meal at a time, starting with breakfast.

Try new breakfast options for a couple of weeks. Once that is working, move on to lunch, then dinner and then snacks. It’s hard for most people to makes complete changes overnight.

You offer classes in how to shop for healthy food. The recommendations I hear are (1) focus on the perimeter of the store where the fresh produce, meat and dairy are; (2) limit saturated and trans fats and sugars; and (3) avoid synthetic substances such as pesticides, preservatives and artificial colors, flavors and sweeteners. Do you agree with this?

I agree with most of it. Even when shopping the perimeter though, you can make a lot of upgrades, like buying organic produce, especially for the “dirty dozen.” (Those are the fruits and vegetables with the most residual pesticides, including apples, grapes and celery.) In the meat and dairy departments, I recommend buying grass-fed versus conventionally-raised meat.

I agree with cutting out artificial ingredients and trans fats and lowering sugar. Sugar is a real problem for some; it’s inflammatory and can cause joint pain, fatigue and other issues.

Isn’t shopping that way going to be more expensive?

Many people wonder why healthy food is so expensive, but what we really should be wondering is why regular food is so cheap.

Valentine’s Day is coming up soon. What will you be serving?

Oh my gosh, I don’t know! My husband doesn’t really like chocolate! Luckily, both of my sons do.

You know, a lot of people are afraid I’ll tell them to take out everything good, but you don’t have to take every food you like out of your life. It’s about making small upgrades. The more of those you make, the more you are continually moving towards better health.

Resources Department for the City of Indianapolis. Their office had heard about the Best Buddies Jobs program through a nationwide challenge that was issued to mayors across the U.S., encouraging their offices to hire individuals with IDD. “Mayor Ballard was really enthusiastic about that challenge, and the connection to our office was made,” Seiger said. “Since we did not have the jobs program in place or the staff on board, we worked with the city’s HR department, and they identified the job opportunities for our Best Buddies participants. Next, we went through a process of screening potential and interested candidates and sent those individuals to the city to interview with their staff.

“They selected two candidates and extended job offers. Currently, we have two Best Buddies Indiana Jobs Program participants that are working for the city in the HR department. These individuals started in the summer of 2015 and have continued their employments. This is so exciting on so many levels for everyone involved.”

Seibert elaborated on the positive impact that these jobs have had on their participants and how this experience has helped to lay the foundation for a Best Buddies Jobs Program to be launched in Indiana. The opportunity for adults with IDD to be part of a team environment, interact with peers and have assigned tasks and a meaningful job is just as important to an individual with IDD as it is to a person without disabilities.

The ability to earn a paycheck is another rewarding aspect. The Best Buddies Indiana organization is currently in discussion with an Indianapolis-based foundation about the possibility of securing startup funds to launch the program later in 2016 or 2017. While they are optimistic about this joint venture, they will continue to rely on the charitable donations of their donors and corporate sponsors to support their existing programs.

“We are excited about the possibilities and have our fingers crossed that everything will fall into place this year,” Seibert said

optimistically. “If we are able to move forward this year, we will hire a staff member in 2016 and another in 2017 who will be solely focused on the jobs program. We will continue to advocate and engage with companies who are interested in making a positive difference with us and want to hire adults with IDD.”
