Woven Dimensions Jennifer Berger Designs Unique Felted Creations Writer / Julie Young Photography Provided

Jennifer Berger has been making and selling handicrafts since she was 10 years old. What began with macramé snowflakes, furry fellows and pom-pom magnets eventually gave way to an interest in basket making — thanks in part to her mother, who always wanted to learn the art form. “We bought a kit and worked together on a single basket. We both enjoyed it so after we were finished, we each made one of our own,” she says. “I really liked doing it, but she decided that one was enough for her.” Berger continued to design and make her own baskets, selling several thousand through her Woven Dimensions business over the next 15 years. However, in the early 2000s, the baskets went by the wayside and she turned to knitting, crocheting and felting — a process of turning wool into delightfully decorative items by shaping and shrinking them. Her first products were Christmas stockings, but after realizing that those tend to be a one-time purchase, she knew she had to diversify her wares. “I figured out how to make some Christmas ornaments and decided that when I got a bunch of things made, then I would start selling again,” Berger says. “The more time I had to work on it, the more time I had to develop my technique. Now I make a lot of different things and take them to different shows.” Berger’s inventory includes farm animals, zoo animals, favorite characters, one-of-a-kind monsters and more. The time it takes to craft an individual piece varies from an hour to several hours, not including the actual felting process, but she has perfected a system of working in stages so that she can maximize her production time. Her creations are sold at a few galleries in Central Indiana, at a variety of craft shows and bazaars as well as online. She does not sell through Etsy however, because she feels it is important for customers to see a Woven Dimensions item so that they know exactly what they are getting.

“Don’t get me wrong, I take the best pictures that I can of my creations and I don’t doctor them in any way, but sometimes people can be confused about an item,” she says. “For example, a cow may be three inches by three inches by two inches, but in a photo, it might look bigger to someone.” Berger says it’s hard to determine which items will be trending at any given moment because it varies from year to year. When she created hat-wearing alpacas and llamas using alpaca yarn, they sold like hotcakes, while at other times, it’s her monsters that excite customers more than anything else. “My ‘Wooley Warblers,’ which are a mash-up of Dickens’ carolers and Whoville singers have been very popular,” she adds. “However, other people like my snowmen that stand up and can be lit with one of those little electric tea lights. It just depends.” To learn more about Woven Dimensions or to learn about upcoming appearances, call 317-733-0476 or visit Berger online at wovendimensions.blogspot.com.

Owner Cynthia Compton

Writer / Megan Jefferson Photographer / Erik Coser

In 2002, Cynthia Compton had a corporate job that required a tremendous amount of travel, and she had just given birth to her fourth child. She wanted to start a business so she could spend more time at home. During this time, she was buying a lot of children’s books to entertain her kids. This naturally led to her having an interest in opening a children’s bookstore. “I began looking at the kinds of things that I bought for my own children and I wanted to carry those things in the

store,” Compton says. “I wanted to have half children’s books and half toys, they complement each other very well, because to children, books and reading are just another form of play. It didn’t make sense to draw a line between the two.” In 2003, Compton and her husband opened 4 Kids Books & Toys in a location on 86th Street. They soon needed more space, so they moved to their current location in Zionsville in 2009 with double the amount of space and an event room. The important aspect that sets 4 Kids Books & Toys apart from other toy stores is their event schedule. They provide 8 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / MARCH 2019 / atZionsville.com

programming every day of the week at 10:30 a.m. On Mondays, they offer “Paint a Story” — story time with an experiential art session for preschoolers. They may create artwork inspired by the style of the illustrator or use themesrelated to the book. In any case, Mondays involve a very messy art activity. On Tuesdays, they have “Stories and Snacks,” which is a more traditional story time. Wednesdays offer “Stories and Play,” where a story is read and then the kids are taught some fundamentals of playing games — taking turns, rolling dice and counting spaces. On Thursdays, 4 Kids presents “Silly Songs and Stories,” which combines reading with music — Kids

can play rhythm instruments, sing and dance. The local Gymboree franchise from Carmel holds their art class at the store on Fridays, so members of Gymboree can come to 4 Kids instead of having to drive up to Carmel. On Saturdays, “Paint a Story” is offered again for parents or caregivers who may not be able to make it to the event during the week. Birthday parties are held on Sundays. Except for the Gymboree class of Fridays and birthday parties, programming at 4 Kids is offered free of charge and does not require reservations. “The idea is that caregivers or parents and their preschool children can just come and have automatic playgroup,” Compton says. “It’s particularly nice when the weather is like this and you’re just stir crazy and you need 30 minutes to go do something fun before lunch, nap, grocery store or other errands.” Compton’s favorite thing about owning the store is running the hands-on activities with the kids and discussing books with young readers. She feels fortunate to be located in a community where people value shopping local and are willing to make an extra stop to support her business. “Because we provide so many events and experiences, we become friends with our customers, and we are part of their weekly social schedule,” Compton says. “We get to participate in kid’s lives from the time they learn to walk to the time that they go off to school and then college. Many of my employees have grown up in my store. I’m grateful to be in such a supportive community.”

The Main Event Trader’s Mill Grill & Bar Offers Great Eats, Live Music, Sports, Games & More

Owners Ron & Deb Watson

Writer / Matt Keating . Photographer / Michael Durr

Ron Watson, the co-owner of Trader’s Mill Grill & Bar since 2017, has enjoyed meeting new friends at the popular establishment. The grill and bar has been around a long time.

“Trader’s Mill was built with the Trader’s Point shopping center,” Watson says. “The original creator sold the place within the first year to a family who ran it for 12 years. The family then sold it to us two years ago. There is some belief that there was a mill in the area of Trader’s Point, but we are not clear on the name’s origin.” Since Watson and his wife, Deb, bought Trader’s Mill two years ago, she says they have updated and changed a lot of things, but “we’ve done it gradually, so as not to shock the regulars.” As far as Trader’s Mill’s physical space, the Watsons have put in all- new flooring, new lighting and a new HD projection system for their 113-inch screens. 10 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / MARCH 2019 / atZionsville.com

“We also have new games like darts and a new jukebox, Euro-lounger couches, new booths and tables and new kitchen equipment,” Watson says. “We added a kegerator for four more draught taps, a new glycol system to keep the beer fresh and cold and more.” The Watsons doubled the size of the petfriendly patio and added landscaping around it, as well as new patio furniture, string lights, a big Jenga, corn hole, dog bowls and a fabulous line-up of live music on the patio on warm Saturday nights. “We’ve updated the menus, improved the food preparation, including getting back to scratch-made food, created new specials and signature dishes, offered gluten-free options, organic veggies, vegan and vegetarian options and more,” Watson says. “We added a dessert menu and developed our own signature bar drinks, too.” The Watsons also hired and trained an all new staff.

All around, guests tell us they are thrilled with the improvements and love what we’ve done with the place.” Guests also love the food. “Our fried cheese is unbeatable,” he says. “They are hand-cut big chunks of fresh mozzarella, each hand-rolled in buttermilk, bread crumbs and spices and served with marinara. One of our show-stopper signature sandwiches is the Three Little Pigs — our amazing tenderloin (handbreaded fried or grilled), layered with ham and Applewood-smoked bacon, and topped with provolone, on a brioche bun. Simone Brothers Have Been Serving Up a Slice of Zionsville For More Than 15 Years Writer / Josh Brown Photographer / Brian Brosmer

Chris and Daniel Simone were born and raised on Long Island in New York. “Grew up in a big Italian family,” Chris says. As they got a little older, the Simone family decided to pack up and move to Indiana. Chris and Daniel both graduated locally at Hamilton Southeastern High School before focusing on their dreams of opening their own restaurant one day. As you might imagine, the brothers know a thing or two about New York Style pizza. Growing up in their grandmother and mother’s kitchens, they picked up plenty of delicious Italian recipes along the way. The family influence only further inspired their dreams later in life. “We grew up pretty much hanging off our grandmother and our mom’s aprons,” Chris says. “They’re both phenomenal cooks, and we’ve brought over many of their recipes here in Indiana. Food has always been a central point in Italian culture. Back in New York, the whole family always got together every Sunday, could be up to 60 people, for dinner.” In 2003, the brothers decided to take their passion for cooking and turn it into a family business — opening Amore Pizzeria that year in Zionsville. The pizzeria is located in the Boone Village Shopping Center, right next to Akard True Value Hardware, and has remained in the same spot for more than 15 years now.

“We got a really good lease deal in Zionsville back then,” Chris says. “Zionsville was growing at the time, with a lot of families, and we wanted to tap into a smaller market and community. This location, since day one, has been phenomenal for us. Our first day we opened, we were out the door for about five hours. That’s when we knew we made the right choice.” Getting started didn’t come without some hard knocks for the Simone brothers. Chris says he and Daniel were full of ambition, but they had plenty to learn in the restaurant business once they dove in. “We were super young when we opened,” Chris says. “I was 23 and Daniel was 21. Our grandfather lent us the money to get going. It was so much work — seven days a week, 12 hours a day for several years. We just kind of did it. Many of our family members have owned Italian restaurants and pizzerias in New York over the years, so we had a lot of insight into the business. We saw a

real need, at the time, for a New York Style pizzeria and just jumped on it. Thankfully, it worked out.” The brothers don’t skimp on the food or the service, and it shows. Recently, Amore Pizzeria was ranked as the second best pizza in the state by The Indy A-List. The Simone brothers make their own dough, in house for the New York Style Pies, and they incorporate their family recipes into all their food. Amore’s big deck ovens bring out the perfect flavor in the pizzas as well. Amore’s cheese is also the best on the market — Grande Cheese. The brothers spend double the price on Grande than what other pizza places might spend on their cheese because, Chris says, “it is worth it.”

“We have purposefully stood by the ingredients that we use,” Chris says. “Grande is the most phenomenal, expensive cheese that you can buy. It comes from one factory and they license who can use it or distribute it in each state. It is expensive, but we have never compromised on our quality. Even when the economy tanked in 2008, we never compromised. You can’t do that in a town like Zionsville. As you can see in our customer reviews, it is definitely worth it.” Amore Pizzeria serves up much more than pizza, too. The menu includes calzones, Italian subs, pasta, chicken wings, salads, desserts and more — giving plenty of options to customers. Still, pizza is their specialty. For first-time customers, Chris recommends they try a certain pizza to get a feel for just how delicious Amore is, and it may not be the option you would think of first. 20 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / MARCH 2019 / atZionsville.com

“I personally recommend our cheese pizza,” he says. “If you are going to test the worth of any pizza place, you won’t get it any better than a cheese slice. That slice really brings out the freshness and quality of the ingredients. We make all kinds of great, specialty pizzas too.” Amore stays involved in the community as much as possible. Chris says the pizzeria is always available for schools, charities, churches and whoever else may be looking to hold a Dine to Donate event. For more than 15 years now, the Zionsville community has supported Amore Pizzeria, too, and the Simone brothers are grateful for the support. Chris and Daniel’s families have grown to love the community over the years as well.

would never live anywhere else now. We are very humbled and very thankful that this community has supported us for so long.” The best way they can give back, Chris says, is to continue providing quality food and service. Overall, the Simone bothers hope Amore Pizzeria is a place where families come to create their own memories. The restaurant is lined with old, framed photos on the walls of their grandparents and others in their family. That is by design. After all, Chris says, it is all about family.

“Pizza is made to bring people together,” he says. “That is why it is cut the way it is and served the way it is. We try to just bring everyone together and create a positive vibe “We are ingrained in this community,” Chris in the community.” says. “You get that small-town feel here and Amore Pizzeria is located at 41 Boone Village it is great. Zionsville is a close, tight-knit Center in Zionsville. You can give them a community, and everyone is laid back. The call at 317-733-1609 or visit them online at schools are fantastic, the people are great, amorezionsville.com for more information. there is no crime. It is just a great town. Indiana is full of ways to stay active indoors or outdoors all year long. Despite there being no mountains or oceans, Indiana is full of adventure for all ages, offering plenty of fun for families staying here in the Hoosier state during spring break.

Dive In If you’re not heading to the beach, the next best thing is a warm indoor pool. Goldfish Swim School has family swim nights that are such a great way to brush up on skills between lessons and have fun with the whole family! Over Spring Break, they’ll have free swim Monday through Friday from 12 to 1 p.m. and Friday nights 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Switch Gears I recently checked out K1 Speed with my husband for our monthly date nights. It’s a cool indoor kart racing facility with lots of IMS memorabilia and plenty of space to have a big group hang out. They also have rooms for parties, food, a pool table and arcade games! The all-electric go-karts are pretty fast, but their top priority is safety and there are many rules in place to make sure drivers are safe. Check out Groupon for some great discounts. Reach New Heights Rock climbing is an awesome way to work on strength and agility. Check out Hoosier Heights Indianapolis where you can enjoy a fun and challenging climb. It’s only $25 for a first time day pass which includes all gear rental and a lesson from a professional to “show you the ropes.” Hoosier Heights 9850 Mayflower Park Drive Carmel, Indiana 46032 317-802-9302

Ride a Bike Bike rental is prevalent around Indiana! Pretty much any town you go to you can find a local bike share. Indianapolis and The Monon are great places to rent a bike and see lots of stuff while enjoying a nice, spring day.

camped at White River Campgrounds and brought our bikes. It was an easy bike ride over to check out the ropes course and we met a few horses giving rides on our way. The campsite also has a creek that is part of the White River and it’s perfect for creek stomping (I suggest wearing water shoes as the rocks are slippery). Plan a Trip Planning on staying in town over Spring Break but want to make a vacation out of it? From hotels to cabins, there are tons of hot spots for a weekender trip or the entire week. Nashville

Tee Off Whether you like golf or not, Topgolf is fun for all ages. Located in Fishers at 116th, off I-69, Topgolf is sure to delight the entire family. Make sure to reserve a bay beforehand to lessen a wait time. The earlier in the day you go, the better deal you get! They have also offered half-day golf academies (camps) over spring break in the past.

One of our favorite places to hike in Indiana is Nashville. You can find lots of hilly hiking trails, fishing, camping and nature programs. If you’re not interested in camping, Abe Martin Lodge has hotel rooms and family cabins. P .O. Box 547 Nashville, IN 47448 812-988-4418

Columbus is one of those places every Hoosier should visit. They’ve got a very family-friendly city. Zaharakos Oldfashioned Ice Cream Parlor, Commons Playground, Kids Commons, Columbus Community Children’s Museum, paddle boating at Cera Park and Atterbury-Bakalar Air Museum. There are also really nice parks for canoeing, hiking and fishing. Fort Wayne

Spring break hotel packages and special events are there for the taking, and it’s just a quick jaunt north. Fort Wayne offers shopping, dining, performing arts, museums and plenty of parks and trails.
