With basketball season nearly upon us, we catch up with former Indiana Pacers star and longtime Zionsville resident Rik Smits and his son, Derrik, a promising young player for ZCHS basketball. It seems basketball talent and 7’ runs in the family. Incredibly, it’s been 13 years since Rik retired from the NBA. In addition to spending time racing motorcyles and rebuilding muscle cars, he has also found time to be an assistant coach for ZCHS Head Coach Shaun Busick.

When it came time for college, she didn’t travel far to Purdue University where she studied for two years, then transferred to Indiana University to study dental hygiene. Upon graduation in 2004, she headed south to complete her bachelor’s degree in Biology from University of Kentucky. She then went on to her doctoral training program and graduated with her Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry in May 2011. 10

Dr. Oyler started in a corporate dentistry position but was soon thinking about her own practice when she saw an ad in the Journal IDA (Indiana Dental Association) for a “NW Indianapolis” area practice. Since she was already living in Zionsville, she told her mom that her dream was to someday work in the beautiful Zionsville Medical Center on West Oak Street. As luck would have it (or providence, she said), the ad was for an existing practice for sale, located right in that very medical building. That was nearly two years ago. Dr. Christie Oyler is quite settled in her practice now, welcoming families and children. She feels she is doing her part, “taking care of

She enjoys getting to know and support her neighbors and ultimately take care of them. She will refer patients elsewhere for endodontics or orthodontia. “My practice is my life,” said Dr. Christie. “I have a Boston Terrier named Dottie, but otherwise, this is where I spend

the best part of my day.” As you can see from the logo on Dr. Oyler’s business cards, a horse’s bit, she has more than a small interest in horses and hopes to someday have a place to pasture a horse or two in the Zionsville area. f you take a drive on Highway 32 east of Michigan Road, you can’t help but notice a field on the south side filled with unique metal artwork, including 15’ dinosaurs, various animals and even a rotating wind sculpture with hearts gyrating in every direction. You want to slow down to take in the sights and appreciate the creativity that is on display. As you stare in amazement, you can’t help but think, “How did they think of that?”

Welcome to the farm of Ernie and Dottie Taylor, owners of the largest privately owned collection in the state of Indiana. Visitors come from all around the country and even abroad to enjoy the clever way that Ernie welds things together. From the Red Hat Ladies and buses of second graders to FFA and motorcycle clubs, people have come from far and wide to experience unique sculptures that bring a smile to your face. Everything here is made from recycled machinery and is welded into something new and treasured. The Taylors are proud to say, ”Everything we do is for others’ enjoyment.” Ernie and Dottie are adamant that nothing is for sale. There is no admission fee. Their source of pleasure is derived from the people that they meet. “If you make a product to sell, it isn’t fun anymore,” Ernie explains. “It becomes work.” The dinosaurs are some of the largest and most attention grabbing artwork in his field. Using oil pans for the heads, sickle bars for the teeth, pipes for the spines, disc blades for the humps on the back, vehicle frames for the legs and then customizing the claws and ribs by hand, the pieces are carefully welded together and become something bigger than each individual part. This charming couple has been married almost 57 years, and their relationship still glows with love, support and a great sense of humor. It is truly a Romeo and Juliet story of how true love really should be. Through many years, both thick and thin, they were and still are best friends. The twinkle in their eyes illustrates their support and enjoyment of one another. The young Taylor family started from humble beginnings. Ernie supported the family working for a mechanical contractor as a pipe welder. He was employed at various power plants, including Rock Island Refinery on West 86th Street in Indianapolis and the old Harding Street Powerhouse. Welding was his life and livelihood. It’s just stuff. Stuff can’t make you happy. It’s joy you bring to “others that brings peace to your heart.” -Dot & Ernie Taylor Dottie ran the household and kept a small jar for excess money. If there was any money after the bills were paid, they determined if they could use it to go out to eat or do a bit of shopping. Life was of modest means, and they worked together for the good of the family. They worked hard. They appreciated what they had.

day. One year for her birthday, Ernie asked her what color of jewelry she preferred. When she mentioned “gold,” he went to the shop and created a 2’ diamond ring sculpture. She hasn’t worn it too many times though. It just may break her ﬁnger or perhaps her arm! But she beams with joy of this thoughtfulness. Ernie is now the proud creator of a can-jo that he plays with great talent. Using an empty spinach can, piece of wood and metal string, he created a musical instrument similar to a banjo. However, there is only one string. Ernie has mastered “Red River Valley” on his homemade can-jo, and to be honest, it sounded pretty good!

Ernie has always been an optimistic and creative individual who loved his craft. Even after spending a full day at work welding, he would come home to tinker in his barn and put things together in a whole new way. When he gets the “blues,” he goes to the shop. Dottie knows the value of giving him some space. Occasionally she is asked to draw something for Ernie, such as the angel that supports their mailbox. The Taylor family is one of great faith. The years have been good to the Taylors, although Ernie suffered a heart attack 12 years ago, and Dottie almost lost him three times. Ernie’s symptoms seemed to indicate heartburn. However, he was admitted to the emergency room and received life-saving treatments after a heart attack.

Today the Taylors exude internal happiness and contentment. They don’t carry cell phones, own a computer or even have air conditioning in their home. A lot of things are nice to have, but they are not

During the last episode, Ernie conﬁdes in me, “I heard a strong booming voice very clearly and distinctly tell me that I was going to be alright.” And so he was. Ernie and Dottie also embrace the phrase, “We won’t slow up, back up, slack up, look up or give up until we are taken up.” It was primarily after his retirement and heart attack that he was able to spend more time adding to his ‘ﬁeld of dreams.’

really necessary. They do not believe that they are missing out in their lives. Their motto is “keep it simple.” Letters of appreciation abound from the countless people that have visited. Volumes of notebooks illustrate the appreciation and enjoyment of others. This brings immense enjoyment to the Taylors. If you wish to visit their farm at 10985 E. In leaving their driveway, a posted sign encapsulates the Taylors’ philosophy of simplicity and humbleness: “It’s Just Stuff. Stuff Can’t Make You Happy. It’s Joy You Bring To Others That Brings Peace To Your Heart. Dot and Ernie Taylor” And so the creativity, welding and building continues. Zionsville Food Pantry A Community Effort to Feed Those in Need | Neil Lucas. Photos | JJ Kaplan With thanksgiving and the holidays approaching, it is natural for our focus to be directed to those less fortunate and those in the Zionsville community that provide assistance to those in need. The Zionsville Food Pantry is one such group that is providing an invaluable service to feed the needy in Boone County year round. Every Friday between noon and 2 pm, families in Boone County can come to the Food Pantry to receive a bag of food and other essential items. Miraculously, the Zionsville 16

Food Pantry is run by a dedicated all-volunteer team, headed by Nancy Thompson. When and where the Food Pantry was started is unclear. However, it appears to have been at its present location in the Zionsville Presbyterian Church on Michigan Road since at least 1992. According to Nancy Thompson who has been its Director since 2003, the Pantry has grown steadily over the years to where it is now the largest food pantry serving Boone County. Recently the Pantry joined into an association with Gleaners Food Bank

and also became a participant in The Emergency Food Assistance Program (â&#x20AC;&#x153;TEFAPâ&#x20AC;?). A federal program, TEFAP is essentially a matching grant program. For every dollar of food or money that is contributed directly to the Pantry, TEFAP matches that amount in food that the Pantry can order from the Gleaners Food Bank. Based on direct contributions to the Pantry last year, the Pantry through TEFAP was able to receive 82,000 pounds of food from Gleaners. In order to continue to provide that amount of food to the needy, the Pantry must generate, from direct monetary or food

contributions, an amount equaling at least 41,000 lbs. of food. Because it now has requirements to meet, it is critical that the Pantry reaches its goal. To be sure, the Zionsville Presbyterian Church is a great supporter of the Pantry by providing the facilities to house the Pantry’s operations and through the efforts of its parishioners. However, it would be a mistake to think of the Food Pantry as solely a ZPC program. The Food Pantry is truly a Zionsville community-wide effort. A number of other local churches and community organizations provide support to the Pantry. For example, proceeds from the St. Alphonsus Liguori Catholic Church’s Oktoberfest were contributed to the Food Pantry. In the summer, the Knights of Columbus help organize the Lanny Parsley Memorial Golf Tournament which also contributes to the Food Pantry. Local civic organizations such as the Lions Club and Tri Kappa take turns donating time and resources to the Pantry. One of the Pantry’s biggest supporters is the Zionsville school system whose assistance in conducting food drives within its schools is essential to the sustainability of the Food Pantry. Last year, Pleasant View Elementary’s food drive generated 5,000 lbs. of food for the Pantry. Every elementary school in the Zionsville Community School system has a food drive sometime during the year. Beginning November 4, Pleasant View and Stonegate Elementary Schools will kick-off their annual food drives with the assistance of their respective PTO. Union Elementary starts its food drive November 6. This year’s food drive at Pleasant View will be directed by PTO members Elizabeth Smith and Lisa Sheridan. Competitions between the elementary school classes are set up to motivate the students to maximize their efforts with a little extra recess as the reward.

In what has become an annual tradition since 2002, ZCHS Head Football Coach Larry McWhorter and members of the ZCHS football team volunteer to spend some time with the Pleasant View Elementary students and also help move the thousands of pounds of food generated by the food drive from the school to the Pantry. According to Nancy Thompson, Coach McWhorter has been a tremendous supporter of the Food Pantry over the years.

Can you imagine how it would feel to be deprived of food for weeks then abandoned far from home without any food, water, or shelter? That’s exactly what happened recently to a young female Labrador. Fortunately, a kind stranger found her and called the Humane Society for Boone County. Crystal, as we named her, was in a critical state. She was vomiting and had little to no body fat left on her fragile frame. Crystal was taken to Zionsville Country Veterinary Clinic for immediate medical care. There was concern that perhaps she swallowed a foreign object while searching for any kind of food to sustain her. She needed exploratory surgery but would she strong enough to survive the procedure? Thanks to compassionate individuals like you, the Humane Society for Boone County has been able to rescue, rehome, and reunite numerous animals in need, animals like Crystal. It was touch and go for a while but Crystal came through the surgery! In the days and weeks since her surgery, Crystal has gained weight like a champion! She’ll remain at ZCVC until she has recuperated completely. A loving family with other labs and a big back yard will adopt her. They will give her the love and care that she needs and deserves. OPERATION SHELTER As long as there are animals in need, like Crystal, we will continue our efforts to safeguard their welfare. One way you can help is through Operation Shelter. Boone County currently has no physical shelter. One of our top priorities is to build a shelter that will include a medical clinic and dog park. All monies donated to Operation Shelter are allocated for the purpose of acquiring land and building such a shelter. Currently, our dedicated volunteer foster families provide the care and shelter these animals need and deserve.

Traditions remind us that some things are truly meant to last. For some, the holiday means traveling to see loved ones, pumpkin pie, stuffing and turkey roasting in the oven, while for others it means lying around watching football games or planning for Black Friday sales. Why not try a new tradition that will truly make a difference? Consider participatin g in the 11th annual Wheeler Mission Drumstick Dash! The 2013 Drumstick Dash will be held in Broad Ripple on Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, November 28 at 9 am for the 4.6 mile competitive run/

walk and the 2.5 mile fun run/walk. The Lil’ Gobbler’s Run is at 10:15 am. Wheeler Mission is expecting around 18,000 participants. Brian Crispin, Director of Marketing for Wheeler Mission, says the race “was the first Thanksgiving Day event in the state and is now the third largest organized run in the state with participants from not just Central Indiana but also from 48 states." The event is hosted by Blue Mile and will benefit homeless men, women and children in our community. According to the Coalition for Homelessness and Prevention, an organization dedicated to tracking the number of homeless men, women and children, the number of homeless in Indianapolis will be around 1,600 in 2013.

Instead, it’s a one-of-a-kind shopping experience where people can find some of the most unique gifts for the upcoming holiday season. “You’re literally walking into the most unique mall you’ve ever been to when you come to Holiday Mart,” Hayes said. “It’s shopping at its finest. Holiday Mart is absolutely

worth driving to the Indiana State Fairgrounds for.” Beginning on Wednesday, November 13 and running through Sunday, November 17, JLI will host its 43rd Holiday Mart 2013, featuring more than 100 merchants from across the country. Buyers can peruse women and children’s apparel, men’s specialty items, gifts, holiday décor, gourmet food items, jewelry and more. Holiday Mart serves as the primary fundraising event for JLI, an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing

the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Funds raised at Holiday Mart benefit various projects and programs, says Mica Wilson, JLI president-elect of Zionsville. JLI estimates it will net around $300,000 from the event, and all the proceeds will go back into the community. “We know our merchants, and customers look forward to it too,” Grifﬁn said. “It’s great knowing we are doing something that has a big impact on the community.” Leah Silverthorn of Geist, a cosecretary of this year’s Holiday Mart, said her favorite part of Holiday Mart is the camaraderie. “Who doesn’t want to volunteer and shop during your downtime?” she said. “I can’t complain about that!” Wilson said Holiday Mart customers almost always come back year after year. “Once you come, you’ll be a lifetime Holiday Mart shopper,” she said. “It’s a good feeling to put on something that people enjoy. And you know what? He is absolutely right. Located at 10 S. ow about feeling a little older for a moment? Do you perhaps wonder where yesterday went? Maybe reflect on your history while remembering the career of a familiar face in Central Indiana? If so, then let’s play a Hoosier edition of What’s My Line? • It has been 25 years since the Indiana Pacers selected this Netherlands native with the second pick in the 1988 collegiate draft. (Yes, he still remains the only NBA player ever drafted from the Red Foxes of Marist College.) • It has been 13 years since this towering Zionsville resident last played in the National Basketball Association. (Indeed, his last appearance was in Game Six of the 2000 NBA Finals when he was sparring against someone named Shaquille O’Neal.) • He is now 47 years old. (That’s right, 47.) • And hold on to your jumper – not only does he have a 20-year-old daughter (Jasmine) in college, but his son is rapidly becoming one of the state’s premier high school basketball players as a junior at the local high school on Mulberry Street. Somehow, surprisingly, the onetime Dunking Dutchman, Rik Smits of Netherlands, Marist and Pacer fame, is entering middle age and appears on the verge of surrendering the Smits family basketball title to his son, another 7-footer, 17-year-old Derrik. The letter “c” may be forgotten occasionally in the Dutch alphabet, but there is another sighting of a Smits on the American basketball landscape. The name Smits is not disappearing anytime soon. In fact, it may again cast a huge shadow in Indiana and beyond. “He [Derrik] can become as good as he wants,” assessed one Hoosier

Crossroads Conference coach. “He is getting better and better.” That is wonderful news for the college recruiting crowd that is always circling over head for potential centers. Derrik recently visited Xavier and Clemson, while Butler, Purdue, Notre Dame, Indiana, Tennessee and numerous NCAA Division I scouts have been following his exploits since his sophomore season when he led the Eagles in blocked shots while averaging 7.1 points. The younger Smits enters his junior season three inches taller and filled out to 220 pounds. Derrik is also fresh off a robust and competitive AAU summer season with the Spiece Indy Heat team. “I found out that I can get better at a lot of things,” he said, “especially rebounding and consistency.”

“I could see it coming,” said Rik, who averaged 14.8 points; shot over 50 percent from the field; and made the NBA All-Star Team in 1998 during his illustrious career as Reggie Miller’s sidekick. “My injuries were getting worse. I had my mind made up [during the playoffs] that it was time to retire.” And he was not alone in retiring. Larry Bird left the coaching world after the six-game loss to the Lakers. “I owe a lot to Bird,” said Rik, who played for nine different coaches in 12 years with the Pacers. “I had a great time playing for him.”

Ironically, the recruiting saga for the second Smits is unfolding differently than the one encountered by his father almost three decades ago. Despite being over 7 feet tall and playing as a 16-year-old for the Netherlands National Juniors Team, Rik was missing from virtually all American NCAA Division I recruiting lists. The pipeline from Europe to the United States was barely dribbling talent in 1982. “No one saw me play,” remembered Rik. “They didn’t know who I was, so I sent out a lot of letters. Finally, I got one offer.” The offer came from Marist, an outpost in Poughkeepsie, New York. His height (7’ 4”) and skills (a deadly shooter) were not overlooked by NBA scouts in 1988 when the Pacers snared him with the No. 2 pick, hoping in time to train the Dutchman to replace the injuryriddled Steve Stipanovich someday at center. That forecast changed dramatically during Rik’s rookie season. After an

injury early in the season knocked out Stipanovich, Rik became the Pacers’ starting center for the next 12 seasons. Ironically, injuries (foot) also forced him into retirement after the 2000 NBA championship finals.

With basketball now in the rear mirror, Rik turned his attention in 2001 to another passion. He returned to a childhood hobby, racing in dirt track motorcross events throughout the Midwest. He even constructed a track behind his Zionsville home. “Once you’re in the NBA, they’re not too keen on you riding,” he recalled in an interview in 2011. “I was combining an interest and a hobby.” Rik was also a talented rider despite his vast size which forced him to be a sit-down rider because if he stood, he could not reach the handle bars. He was known as a “mudder” on the tracks. “You couldn’t miss me,” admitted Rik, who won races and honors on the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association. “I was a bat out of hell when I took off. I was hooked.” But he again went one-on-one with pain. This time, his struggles involved recovery from back surgery nine years ago to repair two cracked bones. The pain eventually forced the world’s tallest motorcycle rider to the sidelines.

His competitive biking became history, but basketball would again knock at his door. Son Derrik was sprouting and needed a tutor to hone his big man skills. “He’s way ahead of where I was at his age,” said Rik. “He has more range than I had and can do the pick and roll and other things that I didn’t do at his age. I was more of a back to the basket player. He has made tremendous strides.” The elder Smits also recognizes the shortcomings of the younger one. That includes consistency, battling fatigue and rebounding. Derrik averaged less than three rebounds in 16 games as a slender sophomore. That number will climb, promised father. “He can rebound,” noted Rik, who also encountered rebounding critics as a professional. “He needs to keep his hands up and work on his conditioning. It will come.”

Zionsville head coach Shaun Busick agrees with father’s assessment. “Derrik needs to get stronger, and his rebounding needs to improve. He needs to play lower both offensively and defensively. He has to keep his butt down. But he has all the tools to be a great player. He has a chance to make the game a career.” Positive reinforcement like Busick’s is a trait that the former NBA center wants to be a part of his coaching philosophy: Stay positive with his son and others whom he assists. “I try not to be in the middle when it comes to coaching,” said Rik. “I have learned to be positive. I try to help with advice when they want it, but I also know Derrik and others have to learn on their own.” Derrik is not the only Eagle in the Smits’ school of big men. Rik will

assist with frontcourt players Alex Sibila; 6’ 6”, 270-pound Josh Dunlop; and a freshman named Cassius Smits. (Cassius is the son of Rik’s sister and is Derrik’s cousin. “He is very active, very quick,” said Uncle Rik of Cassius.) As for his coaching techniques with son, nephew and others, the elder Smits keeps the message simple. “I try to help where I can,” said Rik, who sits in the stands and not on the bench on game nights at Zionsville. “If nothing else, I can be a big obstacle for them to shoot over in practice.” Busick is a big fan of his tallest assistant who has been part of the Eagle family for eight seasons. “He has been great with the kids and the coaches and is just one of the guys,” said Busick, who connected with Smits during Derrik’s AAU seasons in the sixth and seventh grades.

Rik, what was your greatest personal moment in the NBA? “It had to be the last-second shot against Orlando in the 1994 Eastern Conference finals at Market Square Arena. I will always remember that shot. The place went wild.” What about as a team? What Pacer moment is at the top of your list? “It had to be when Reggie [Miller] scored his eight points in 18 seconds against the Knicks [Game One of the 1995 Eastern Conference finals that wiped out a presumably secure six-point lead for the hometown team]. It was unbelievable. The fans are usually very cocky in New York, but they were real quiet the next couple of days.” What was it like to play against Shaquille O’Neal during his prime? “Shaq was tough to guard, and he could jump so fast. The first time I played against him, he blocked a hook shot of mine. A hook shot! That made an impression on me.” You also played against another giant on the court, 7’ 7” Manute Bol, who towered over you? Any special memories of Manute? “Yes, he was always talking. Nothing bad. Just talking.”

Why are you still in Indiana? “I have always liked Indiana. I am not a big city guy. I prefer a smaller town atmosphere.”

been stored for a period of time. Santa Claus will begin his visits and taking down the wishes from the children who will be able to visit him in the rejuvenated house. The house will be nestled in the courtyard of Serenity Tea Room on Main Street between Oak and Pine Streets. A first for Zionsville this year is the combination of the traditional Christmas parade and the tree lighting. These two events were traditionally held on separate days and will be celebrated together under an entirely new program. Organized by the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce and members of the Chamber’s Downtown Committee, the parade will begin at 4:15 pm and the tree lighting of a magnificent live tree will occur later that evening at 6 pm.

Special performances and special guests will also be on hand for the day’s parade and tree lighting. Special appearances by notable groups and individuals include Radio Disney’s Road Crew and Representative Steve Braun, just to name a few. Tom Britt, publisher of this magazine, has graciously agreed to be the emcee for the parade.

Local residents representing their neighborhoods along with their favorite four-legged friends will be marching along with rescue organizations and the Boone County Humane Society. Of course, a Christmas parade would not be complete without Santa himself who will be concluding the parade in majesty and grandeur.

| Geri Neita Zionsville Showchoirs will be highlighted in a holiday home tour as they join forces with merchants and members of the community to present “Carol of Homes,” an event featuring area residences staged and decorated for the season and brimming with holiday cheer!

“Carol of Homes” is the brainchild of Jennifer Luczak, joint fundraising chairperson for Zionsville Showchoirs, Inc. (ZSI). Jennifer has two children in showchoir, as does Erin Leonard, her co-chair. Last year, their aim was to find a fundraiser that wouldn’t be more of a drain on parents and would require student participation.

“We wanted some buy-in from them,” said Jennifer. Discovering that Zionsville home tours had proved very successful in the past, the pair built upon that concept, drawing on the talent of awardwinning choir members to provide entertainment in each home.

In order to find homeowners willing to host the students and open their homes to the public, Jennifer and Erin put ads in the newspaper and on the school website. They sent letters to parents and the village residents’ association. They even went door-to-door with flyers. Well their efforts paid off, and six homes were made available for the inaugural “Carol of Homes” – three in the village and three on the outskirts of town.

Beth Bugbee’s village home was on that tour. ”What a unique experience! It inspired me to get my decorations up early and enjoy them for the entire season while raising funds for a great group,” she said. “The kids gave beautiful performances and truly put everyone in the holiday spirit.” Choir members volunteered to participate in the event and performed their favorite holiday songs either individually or in small groups. “I loved getting to meet members of the community and see all of our supporters,” said Kristen Parks, a Royalaires senior. "It is a great way to get more people interested in the show choirs.” Royalaires senior Max McCreary agreed, “It was an awesome experience to perform casually and spread holiday cheer,” he said. The kids had a great time and the directors saw such value in it that every student is required to participate this year in some capacity, whether it be hosting in the homes, selling tickets, making programs, helping homeowners, singing, baking or even shoveling snow! Along with caroling and homemade cookies at this year’s six residences, raffle tickets for beautiful holiday wreaths (decorated and donated by some local businesses and individuals) will be available for purchase. “Baby’s First Christmas” ornaments that we got so many, many years ago that bring us back to a time when our children were so young. It is with that same idea of remembrance and tradition, with a bit of a twist, that Leigh Ann Akard and her employees at the Akard True Value proudly display their “Veterans Tree” each year. For those unfamiliar with the “Veterans Tree,” it is a large 12’ tree that has stood near the front of Akard’s True Value store for the past 10 years. What makes this tree unusual is the decorations. You see, it is decorated every year entirely with photographs that have been collected over the years of local veterans. The “Veterans Tree” began with a simple desire by Leigh Ann Akard along with one of the employees, Joe Hollingsworth, to do something patriotic for the holidays. Shortly after 9/11, the Zionsville Lions Club collected photos of local veterans for a large wall of tribute that was displayed at the annual Fall Festival. After the Fall Festival ended, the photos were stored without having any speciﬁc idea as to what they would do with them in the future.

for years as they stir memories of Christmas’ past. There are the ornaments that have been passed down from generation to generation that we remember hanging on trees at our parents’ house. There are the

Somehow Leigh Ann and Joe got the idea to put the photographs on a Christmas tree and display it in the middle of the store. Through the years, they have expanded the number of photos on the tree from approximately 24 to over 100 by encouraging local residents to contribute photos of themselves or their loved ones. Initially all the photos were decorated with a particular ribbon and then hung on the tree. After the tree had been up for a while, they noticed that photos with a different type of ribbon began to appear on the tree. That is how they found out that people were coming in and quietly adding pictures to the tree

on their own without assistance from Akard employees. As people brought in more and more photos, they also began to collect more and more stories behind the photographs. For example, Leigh Ann recalls a mother that came in to drop off a photo of her son who was stationed in Afghanistan. The mother told Leigh Ann that she just wanted a place to visit her son while he was away at war. Photos on the tree range from WWII veterans to those that served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Among local notables with photos on the tree is Orland Coleman, Ralph Stacey and Dr. Jim Haines. Carolyn Hadley, head cashier of the store, is the unofﬁcial curator of the tree. It is Carolyn that actually places the pictures on the tree each year. As head cashier, many times it is Carolyn who meets and talks with the people wanting to contribute a photo to the tree.

| Janelle Morrison Life has been sweet for Confectioneiress owners Victor and Mica Gosnell who have been operating their bakery in Zionsville for just over two years. After their epic grand opening, cupcakes were flying out the door just after turning on their “open” sign. The husband and wife duo have continued to hit the ground running and are ready to expand their enterprise. Bites by Confectioneiress, a second and conceptually new location by the Gosnells, is slated to open in 2014. Mica is the culinary specialist of the two proprietors, and her talent for intricate cake designs and ingenuous cupcake flavor combinations have bolstered her reputation as one of the greater metropolitan area’s elite cake and cupcake providers. Confectioneiress has grown their wedding cake clientele substantially this year, designing over 100 wedding cakes, by averaging six to eight weddings a weekend during the unofficial “wedding season.” Unique to the area, they introduced their top selling cupcake flavor, chocolate chip cookie dough, a couple of years ago at the local Farmer’s Market. With the community’s support of Confectioneiress, the Gosnells feel confident about introducing their next line of products to the community. Victor explained the concept of Bites by Confectioneiress and how it differs from Confectioneiress. “We’re not changing our model at Confectioneiress. We’re just introducing something new and unique to the area at our second location,” Gosnell said. Bites will bring a dessert and specialty coffee bar to downtown Zionsville and will carry items that they don’t carry at their current location on a daily basis. Meanwhile, for fans of Confectioneiress, the menu and concept will stay exactly the same. Customers will still place orders for their favorite treats at Confectioneiress as Bites will offer a completely new line of products that can be ordered at its location north of 106th Street, next to Bub’s Burgers. While Confectioneiress is best known for their custom cakes, cupcakes, design and special flavors, the new location will be focused on mini desserts and specialty items that are not currently available in town. “We will have a variety of mini dessert items and a coffee bar,” Victor described. “We have teamed up with Julian Coffee Roaster that was previously on Main Street. The Gosnells have expressed their gratitude to the community for supporting their efforts over the last two years, and as a gesture of their appreciation, they have joined the efforts with several area merchants and businesses to partake in this year’s “Christmas in the Village” celebration that will take place in downtown Zionsville. Victor and Mike Snider with Snider Group, LLC have teamed up to bring back the “Santa House” that was used in years past for children to visit with Santa Claus during the holiday season. They will organize the refurbishing and decorating of the enchanting house with the help of volunteers from the local Boy Scout troops and the Zionsville Performing Arts Center. Victor expressed that it was important for he and Mica to be involved in preserving and paying tribute to the traditions that were started long

traditions that were started long before they arrived to town. “The small town feel is why we moved to Zionsville,” Victor said. “It is important to us to bring back the memories for those who’ve been here and help to create new ones.” Confectioneiress will have their packaged goodies available for purchase at the Santa House that will be located in the garden at Serenity Tea Room while families wait in line to see Santa. Confectioneiress is also very involved in a community project that serves terminally ill and seriously ailing children and their families. They are one of the preferred vendors for Icing Smiles, a nonproﬁt that provides specialty cakes to the afﬂicted families who want to celebrate birthdays and other special occasions with the children while in the hospital. To help ease the burden of purchasing a specially designed cake, they work with the families who otherwise may not be able to afford it. “We are fortunate to be one of the preferred decorators,” Victor said. “We are contacted by the organization when there is a need. The families need a little spark to take their

mind off of everything that’s going on in their day-to-day lives, and it is our privilege to put together a special cake for whatever event they may need.” Once they are through the holiday rush, the Gosnells will focus on maintaining what they are doing at Confectioneiress while planning for the grand opening of their sister store, Bites. “Bites is a totally new concept for the Zionsville area,” Victor states. “It will appeal to a wider demographic. We are looking forward to opening this location and possibly expanding the Bites’ label afterwards.” But Victor says they will approach their growth methodically and “one bite at a time.” Bites by Confectioneiress has a tentative opening set for early spring of 2014. Their farm already produced Grade A and Grade B maple syrup which is the industry norm. At Maplewood Farm near Bloomington, a transformation of

syrup production and marketing genius was born. What if you could age and infuse the syrup in barrels that were previously used to age liquor? Tim procured various barrels, ranging from rum from Prichard, bourbon from Versailles and brandy from Starlight. He then experimented with aging his syrup for 12 months in the various barrels which increases the flavor by three or four times. Wood or other fuel, coupled with intensive labor and energy, is required to boil off the water and increase the concentration of sugar within the syrup. The barrels sit next to a bonfire in a Rumford fireplace. The barrel expands and contracts as Tim raises and lowers the heat, and the flavor from the barrel is thereby infused into the syrup. What emerged was a sensory overload for one’s taste buds. He had distinguished his brand in an otherwise commodity market. Tim is reaching celebrity status in his own right. He is working with Wolfgang Puck to create a signature syrup just for the renowned chef and his many restaurants. Burton’s maple syrup has been featured on The Martha Stewart Show. And remember Oprah’s farewell brunch? Nestled between chicken and waffles on her table was Burton’s custom blend of maple syrup, fit for the talk show queen herself. After creating custom syrups for Paul Kahan, voted “Best Chef In America,” and Stephanie Izard, the only female winner of Top Chef, several Chicago area restaurants began to offer his exclusive barrel-aged syrups. Most recently on his radar is developing a custom blend of syrups for numerous restaurants along the Rocky Mountains. The Four Seasons Resort in Vail and The Little Nell in Aspen are a couple that offer his luxury syrup. With 700 trees on their 28 acre farm, the Burtons rely on sap from neighboring maple tree farms. It takes 10 gallons of sap to make one 12 oz. bottle of syrup. That’s because

approximately 68 percent of the product is evaporated to allow the sugar to consolidate into its final form. Indiana is the most southwestern state of maple-producing states in America. The maple belt reaches northward on into Canada which produces approximately 80 percent of all maple syrup. Because Indiana is the most southern state in this belt, it all begins here. From here, the production gradually extends to the North. Being a proud member of Indiana Artisans, Tim has created an exclusive syrup specifically for our own Sullivan Munce Cultural Center. Using a specially selected Apple Jack Brandy barrel, he has infused the syrup with rinds of orange and lemon. It has been resting for a year, waiting for its debut at our art center. Tim has tasted this syrup and proudly exclaims, “It is phenomenal!” This barrel will yield between 120 and 130 bottles

of specialty syrup. Each bottle will also feature custom etching with the Sullivan Munce logo. You may purchase your bottle at the upcoming “Artisans’ Fare” held November 22-23. ZCHS’ Drama Department’s Production of The Music Man | Neil Lucas

Beginning November 14, the ZCHS Drama Department will open its production of the classic Broadway musical, The Music Man, at the Zionsville Performing Arts Center (ZPAC). Written by Meredith Wilson, the musical revolves around con man Harold Hill, played by Max McCreary, who poses as a band organizer and leader that sells band instruments and uniforms to unsuspecting residents of the ﬁctional small town of River City, Iowa. Harold Hill promises to train members of the local band, even though he is not a musician. His ultimate plan is to skip town without providing any music lessons. Harold’s plans run amok when he falls for the prim and proper young librarian and piano teacher, Marian Paroo, played by Annie Weidner.
