There are 290 kilometres of public footpaths and cycle routes in the City of Bayswater. 6051 searches to express the individual movement of man amidst a car-dominated terrain. The book is structured around the narrative of a walk from the affluent neighbourhood adjacent to the Swan River to the sprawling suburban residential monotony north of the Midland train line. By day, the area serves as a quiet commuter suburb to the city, populated by bursts of activity in the early morning and late afternoon rush hours; by night there is an emptiness and feeling of unease that swathes the streets adjacent to the railway. As a place in transformation Maylands has seen an influx of boutique cafes and fashion stores, creating a curious coexistence of glorified vintage and suburban neglect. 6051 aims to draw attention to this without offering any opinions or predictions, merely observing and framing the atmosphere of a place as it exists at a specific time so we may look back and understand the physicality of urban shifts that occur gradually every day.
“Why open our eyes anywhere but in undamaged places like national parks? One reason is, of course, that we do not live in parks, that we need to improve things at home, and that to do it we have to see the facts without blinking. Robert Adams
