‘Conversation Space’ Shelter, Roundhay Park, Leeds -
My name is Tom Eddison and I am an architecture student studying in Leeds. Having completed Year III of Part I of my degree I am now looking for work experience within an architectural firm in order to gain experience and learn essential skills in the office and field environments, and to be able to align learned theory with the needs of Architectural practise. I first went to university to study Civil Engineering in Cardiff, but whilst the course had a good background on the physical and technical aspects of Architecture it lacked focus in design, making me realise that I had more to offer on the conceptual and creative aspects of an architectural course.

My two most recent jobs involved assembling products whilst working on a production line in a factory. I find it incredibly interesting to learn about the composition of products, to know how things are put together and to see how they work, so I did not find this manual work in the slightest bit boring. The job itself, however, did not push my abilities as much as I would have liked.

About Me
Third Year Project:
Bristol Borstal, Bristol
I have since hosted a live project for the benefit of Limetree Festival in North Yorkshire in August 2011. The strict brief was to build a shelter from willow and brash from an area of protected forestry. The brash proved structurally inneficient and so a willow dome was constructed throughout the course of a week, providing a scenic thoroughfare in the daytime whilst at night transforming into an intimate shelter. I plan on organising more live projects in differing climes around the world, in order to test the diversity of indigenous form, function and materiality.
Dartmoor Arts Ripon, Summer NorthSchool, Yorkshire Spatial Structures, ‘Lily’s Storytelling Space’
Last summer I enrolled with the Dartmoor Arts Summer School, where I attended the ‘Spatial Structures’ course led by Jerry Tate (Jerry Tate Architects) and renowned traditional carpenter Henry Russell. As a group we had five days to design and build a ‘storytelling space’ for Lily, the owner of the land. The materials we used were sourced locally from sculptor Peter Randall Page’s forest; spruce trees and hazel saplings make up the entirety of the structure. The course provided me invaluable experience in working on a 1:1 scale, something not otherwise available to most students. It also provided an opportunity for me to make my first shelter, something which I plan on repeating many times over the coming years.
