SOLOMON MINES | INTERVIEW

MASTER JEWELLER GLENN SPIRO is a Master jeweller specialising in some of the most exquisite gemstones in the world. He offers unique pieces to top collectors who come to him for the rarity of his gems and for his designs that exude modernity and confidence, but are also timeless in their appeal. This year, after 30 years of discreetly acquiring some of the world’s finest gems and creating jewellery masterpieces for the most discerning and knowledgeable collectors, Spiro opens his first G by Glenn Spiro Salon at Harrods Fine Jewellery Room.

B

orn and educated in London, Glenn Spiro trained as a master jeweller with English Artworks and was later appointed as Senior Director of Christie’s and International Specialist of their Jewellery Department. A true innovator, Spiro’s unique approach to combining unusual materials with nature’s treasures produces breathtaking, cutting edge designs. What sets Sprio apart is the impact his jewellery makes, often a riot of coloured stones, the pieces may combine traditional precious metals with more innovative materials including titanium and carbon. The forms are bold and unexpected, yet have a calm balance of proportion and scale. Having seen the G by Glenn Spiro Collection at Harrods, I witnessed that each unique piece tells a different story. Was this your intention?

10

Absolutely. I love gemstones and I am truly passionate about them. All my stones are very old and have a lot of character and history, so each of them tells a unique story. Over the years, I have amassed a huge collection of jewels and I never get bored looking at them, but the best feeling is when I see them on people, as it is so exciting to see the reaction they evoke. What is the secret for achieving such results? We don’t follow the trends or make pieces because they sell well; instead we take our own path, and prefer not to follow the normal business formula. We buy things that we are passionate about and I think this philosophy and approach resonates with a very discerning group of people who come to us for our work, and understand the beauty and rarity of the pieces we present to them. Where do you see G by Glenn Spiro in 10 years? What are your hopes and dreams for the house?

I hope we will stand the test of time because the level of craftsmanship and the stones we source and work with are unparalleled, and increasingly hard for customers to find. We operate like an old fashioned atelier creating one of a kind jewels, and I think the top collectors out there today want this, they are bored seeing the same jewels in London, Paris, Hong Kong

and New York- they want something truly different. Due to the natural beauty of the gems we work with, and the intrinsic value they hold, there is also a timeless appeal to our pieces, I sometimes see pieces we created 10 or 15 years ago and they are still as relevant today as they were then.

Joe Spiro, his son recently joined the family business and alongside his father co-created a breathtaking collection of titanium engagement rings called ‘I Do’. Currently working at the Harrods Salon he deals with some of the most discerning buyers and private clients.

Spiro delights in the unexpected, be it setting a single diamond on a vibrantly coloured blue or pink titanium band for a collection of engagement rings, or artfully setting pave diamonds on the inside of the shank of an important sapphire ring, the form and aesthetic of his designs are always surprising. No part of the jewel is too insignificant for his attention, who ensures that even the unseen parts of a jewel are expertly finished, and delights in details such as setting diamonds under the centre stone of a ring for the owner’s secret enjoyment. It is these unexpected, utterly luxurious details that add to the overall allure of Spiro pieces as a wearable works of art.

Joe, you now play an integral part of G by Glenn Spiro, having worked on a collection that appeals to a younger generation. Do you think that in the future you will be able to follow in your father’s footsteps and design pieces like him? I truly hope so, but the task ahead is immense. This was why before joining the business I travel around the world learning as much as I could about the fascinating world of gemstones. My father’s passion has definitely passed on to me and I am really enjoying working with the pieces and seeing peoples reactions to them. As a designer, some people say that you are either born with it or not, and I think I

that I have inherited it as the response to our ‘I Do’ collection has already been great, but its early days. The collection in Harrods is truly unique and we recommend our readers visit the permanent exhibition in order to truly witness one of the greatest wonders of the jewellery world. While pictures may illustrate the artistic direction of Spiro and reflect his attention to detail, it is nothing when compared to when you hold the pieces or see them worn. There is a lightness and an artistry to the work that is truly awe inspiring. The G by Glenn Spiro Salon is based in the heart of Harrods Fine Jewellery Room by the worldrenowned stores of Graff, Fabergé, De Beers, and Cartier. Ultimately we think what best describes the G by Glenn Spiro Collection is that it is a celebration of life. Harrods Fine Jewellery Room 87-135 Brompton Road, London SW1X 7XL Glennspiro.com

SOLOMON MINES | BOOK REVIEW

SHARI ARISON’S BOOK REVIEW: THE DOING GOOD MODEL Based on 13 fundamental values for the benefit of society, economy and ecology, the innovative book serves as a practical day-to-day tool for integrating positive values into the core of businesses, non-profit organizations, communities and individuals.

R

anked by Forbes as one of the most influential women in the world, SHARI ARISON has been praised by former U.S. President Bill Clinton as “Profoundly impacting the world in a positive way, touching lives everywhere with an everlasting pursuit to make the planet a better place.” Arison is owner of the Arison Group that operates in more than 40 countries across five continents. Her business arm, Arison Investments, operates in the fields of finance, infrastructure, real estate, renewable energy, salt and water. Its philanthropic arm, The Ted Arison Family Foundation, houses the organizations Essence of Life, Goodnet, All One and Ruach Tova that operates Shari’s global initiative Good Deeds Day. ‘The Doing Good Model Book’ is Arison’s fourth hardcover in the field of positivity and provides tangible tools to assist global leaders make better decisions. Her sustainable valuesbased business model can be introduced and implemented in organizations both small or large. In fact, implementation of the ‘Good Model’ has already begun internally at the Arison Group as a practical tool for integrating values in core activities. As part of this ongoing process, crossorganizational forums were established to encourage active involvement at every level by brainstorming ideas together, devising practical tools, and enhancing values-based activities worldwide. Your book presents 13 core values for unleashing positive actions in business. What is the Language & Communications chapter about? I truly believe that language itself can either build societies or destroy them. Words have a tremendous power, as they directly manifest our thoughts and characteristics. The Language & Communications chapter describe how language in any scenario of our lives can be turned positive. For example, when I introduced Language & Communications to my employees at Arison Group they suggested an idea called “Positive it”. They look at corporate

12

communications and turn negative communications into positive. On a practical level it means that if an employee comes up with an idea or problem, instead of saying, “It can’t be done”, we encourage turning the language into “How can this be done? How can we solve this?” Actually we have found that this creates mental shifts in people’s lives, even outside of professional settings. Do you have any role models? For me there have always been three key people that I admire, the first is Martin Luther King, second, Mahatma Gandhi and third Mother Teresa. These revolutionary leaders have created sustainable positive change in the world by peaceful means, and I truly respect this. They were companionate and caring individuals with a deep-rooted passion for their cause. Arison has been promoting her positive philosophy to the world since 2007 with an annual ‘Good Deeds Day’ that began in Israel and has spread globally to over 60 countries. In nine years, over 3 million volunteering hours have been given to the society and at this years event in April 2015 Pope Francis participated. Arison Said: “The Good Deeds Day is a day that connects between people of all ages, cultures, and religions. It has crossed all borders to become an international tradition, where people from all walks of life unite around the simple idea that every person can do something good for the benefit of others and the planet. The next day will take place in April 2016 and we are certain that this initiative will continue to grow and expand in the future.” Arison is also part of The B Team, a nonprofit initiative led by Sir Richard Branson and former Puma CEO Jochen Zeitz to “advance a Plan B that places values at the core of business.”

“ Business and philanthropy form a powerful platform for positive change ”

Arison is optimistic about the power of every positive action, but she knows that effecting change takes time, particularly inside businesses. “All of this is a process. It has taken me years to find the right Chairman and Managers as well and the right people who are passionate about making a difference.” The book ‘The Doing Good Model’ is translated into 17 languages and circulated in 48 countries. It ranks 1st on Amazon’s bestsellers Free Enterprise List, 1st on Barnes & Noble’s Bestsellers Business List, USA’s Today Top 150 Combined Best Sellers List and the MIBA Indie Bestsellers List. MANHATTAN DINING REDEFINED

At the age of 26 Ralph Lauren established one of the most recognizable brands in fashion - Polo. Five decades later, the business leader continues to surprise the world by opening his 3rd restaurant, The Polo Bar located on Manhattan’s 5th Avenue. The quintessentially American venue offers New Yorkers a classic dining experience.

SOLOMON MINES | FEATURE

RALPH LAUREN’S Paris restaurant, Ralph’s, is a classic American dinner and RL in Chicago is a fashion eatery oasis in the middle of the ‘Windy City’, but nothing compares to the designer’s newest NYC restaurant. Lauren’s third restaurant includes all the ingredients that make his style so quintessentially American with a touch of a top-class private members clubs.

Lauren said: “I am drawn to the kind of food that people truly enjoy, vibrant food that people want to return to time and again. I have always designed into worlds that were inspired by the way we live. Food and sharing a meal with family and friends is so much a part of that. Creating a restaurant in NY as an extension of those worlds is totally natural to me.”

Henry Koehler’s polo match inspired mural embraces the walls (397 horse paintings), with country-club style leather accents and luxuriously hand-crafted interiors. It’s an ode to the preppy American, the Wild West and the sporty style that Lauren represents in his collections. The waiting staff are beautifully outfitted with custom RL grey flannel trousers, leather wingtips and silk rep ties.

In 1968 when you established your brand, why did you decide to call it Polo?

Lauren said: “I never thought that I would become a designer, nor did I think I would be a restaurateur, but when the opportunities presented themselves, i.e. a space in Chicago, a beautiful courtyard and stable in Paris and now the space on 55th Street that was once the home of Le Pavilion, it seemed the perfect way to go.” (Le Pavilion belonged to Henri Soule, the Restaurateur that defined the US taste in haute and Gallic cuisine throughout the 1940’s and 1950’s). The traditional New England-style interior features a brasstopped bar, parquet flooring and tan leather banquettes and is inspired by ‘old-school’ New York dining establishments. Guests can enjoy cocktails and snacks at the bar or cozy up next to the polo saddles by an open fireplace. Downstairs, the main dining room is adorned with equestrian art and a wood panelled ceiling and also features a private dining room for up to 14 people. The cloakroom is particularly avant-garde with a sparkling incarnation of a tack room, complete with polo mallets and bridles.

“I love sports, and I couldn’t call it baseball or basketball. Somewhere along the line, I was following some horses, and I remembered [Porfirio] Rubirosa who was a flamboyant guy in the period and it was a really elegant sport. It was like a sport for kings. When I came out with the name, everyone said, “What is that? Marco Polo?” No one in America knew what polo was.” Over the years you have expanded your brands to include; Polo by Ralph Lauren, Ralph Lauren Collection, Purple Label, Black Label, Blue Label, RRL, RLX, Childrenswear, Denim & Supply, Chaps and Club Monaco. You also operate in three-business segments, wholesale, retail and licensing and now you also run three international restaurants. Did you envision all this when you started selling ties at the age of 26? “I didn’t have a vision as in ‘this is where I’m going’, I had a vision as in, ‘this is what I love to do.’ The ties, as simple as they were, looked very different from other ties, they were wide and unusual. I never said to myself, ‘I’m going to be the greatest’, I just wanted to do my own thing. I’d worked for a tie company, and I said, “Can we do this kind of tie, I think we could sell them in New York?” This older guy who ran the company said, “No, the world will not buy The American Icon’s personality and passion for equestrian sport, is emphasized throughout the venue.

The venue is regularly frequented by celebrities and booking can take up to 2 months.

your merchandise.” That was a big statement to say to a 26 year old kid. The guy laughed at the idea of doing your own thing. I left there and started out of a drawer in the Empire State Building. I used to go out and find rags and make them into ties, and then I’d carry them to stores and sell them. People started saying, “More, we want more.” That was so exciting for me. A guy from Neiman Marcus came to my office one day and said, “Let me look at your ties. I’ve been seeing them around.” Then he said, “Would you send these to the main buyer?” At the time, I wasn’t big on flying, I had little kids, and I wasn’t that experienced in jetting all over the place. But I got my little rags together, got on a plane, and flew there, because I knew the buyer wouldn’t understand

my ties unless I explained them to him in person. I came home with an order for 100 dozen! That was my first big success. I thought, “I can do this, I’m in business.” After that I wanted to sell to Bloomingdale’s, which was the kingpin store in New York. When I finally had the chance to show the buyer the ties, he said, “Ralph, I like the patterns, but you got to make them a quarter of an inch narrower and I want you to take your name off and put on “Sutton East” - that was their private label. I said to the guy, “Gary, I’m dying to sell to Bloomingdale’s, but I’m closing my bag now and going home because I can’t take my name off, and I can’t make the tie a quarter of an inch narrower. With time, this decision was proven successful as I built a £6.5bn business with a tie. But

the question I’m still asking myself every day is: “What else can I do? How much further can I go? Could I build a media business? Do I have anything else to say? It is important for me to emphasise that I do not pursue this for financial reasons, but for excitement and passion. Whenever I’ve done anything, I’ve done it because I had something to say about what I believe in and that’s exactly why I created the Polo Bar in NYC. I get great pleasure in making my own statement, and in fact this is my greatest joy in life.” Booking is essential. The Polo Bar. 60 Seconds

with Michael Sakai

HANNAH GROSSBERG You have a reputable talent for spotting early talents, what is your secret? Having been in the art world for the last 30 years and a 3rd generation in the industry, I started out with ancient art, then modern which has evolved into pop, contemporary and street art, I have seen a great deal of artists and interacted with a huge number and diverse range of collectors from all over the world. I find that this gives me the insight to filter from the thousands of artists that approach us every year and choose just only a few to promote. Why do you think that people like street-art and does this form of expression has a future? Many people think that street art is associated only with artists like Banksy, however this art form is over 50 years old. Street art has now fused with contemporary art to become the fastest growing movement since pop art and accounts for a huge number of sales globally every year. I believe that it is here to stay. What do you think of Art Basel and other reputable international fairs? Over the last decade in particular the number of fairs all over the world has increased dramatically as people’s appetite for art increases, both as an investment tool and as a cultural experience, therefore, art businesses try to capitalize on this and reach potential clients at holiday resorts: Hamptons, Monaco, Basel and Frieze. What does Art means to you? Everyone has different taste and likes different types of art, but also peoples’ moods are dynamic, so I think art is a portrayal of what people endeavour and see what resonates with their lives. How can a price tag be attached to a piece of art? How do you value an item? Ultimately, I think that this is determined by the market supply and demand. The market is determined by the momentum of the artist’s sales, media and quality of where his works end up in.

Based out of a sun-soaked studio in Eastern Sydney, Hannah Grossberg is emerging as a game-changing artistic talent, with no limits to the application of her signature techniques. By fusing traditional art methods such as oil painting and watercolour with modern skills including digital illustration, Grossberg starts to occupy her own space in the industry. Where do you get your inspiration from? My art is influenced by many sources; British painter Lucien Freud’s bold oil paintings, the impressionist Claude Monet and his iconic water lilies, and closer to home, the work of Australian artist Del Kathryn Barton. Furthermore, from a young age my mother has been my biggest influence. As a trained occupational therapist she saw art as a healthy outlet and a physical way of expressing ones internal self. What are the key messages of you creations? My oil and watercolour paintings have been recognized for their feminist aspects, playing with the female sensibility as I place nudes in a mystical haze where nature and the body coincide. How does the fact that you are Jewish influences your art? My Eastern European background inspires me to recreate the beauty that was taken away from so many talented artists in the 1940’s. I have been recently moved by the film ‘Woman in Gold’ as the restitution of the Klimt portrait to Maria Altmann powerfully symbolized her reunification with her identity. I feel blessed in every moment to be Jewish as it governs my artistic practice with a sense of history and prompts me to restore the culture that was lost. Through my art I aim to offer an optimistic and bright perspective of the world as I see it. How do you envision your art developing in the future? My dream is to create a gallery where young contemporary artists can showcase their creative talents and connect with like-minded individuals. I would hope that this space encourages good energy and high spirits where people leave the gallery slightly happier and with a positive outlook on the world. Grossberg’s art can be purchased via her website and Private Commissions are available. ONDINE COWLEY Hairstyle Column Since an early age I knew that I wanted to be a Hairstylist and that is why at the age of 15, I joined Nicky Clarke one of the best hair salons in the UK. Starting as an apprentice today I am an Advanced Director specialising in wedding and events hairstyling. I feel fortunate to work in an industry I am highly passionate about and travel worldwide styling celebrities, royals and business leaders.

A good hairpiece can beautifully compliment your style - why not try a tiaras, head chains, pins or hairs clips. If you don’t want to wash your hair and don’t want to leave it down, simply put it in a slick ponytail and plait the ends. Finish by twirling your hair around the ponytail. The results will leave you with a fabulous and elegant look for the day. Alternatively ask your hairstylist to do it for you.

Nicky Clarke Moister Shampoo (£13, 300ml)

Alterna Caviar Repair Recovery Shampoo (£33, 150ml)

To avoid splits-ends and keep luscious, flowing and healthy looking hair, I recommend a trim every 6 to 8 weeks.

Kate Beckinsale is just wonderful, with the most amazing personality. We used Nicky Clarke Hair Raising, to get volume to the roots and a full head of Velcro rollers. I then tonged all of the ends for long lasting hold ready for a film premier.

Kate Beckinsale

Nicky Clarke Hair Raising (£16, 200ml)

Once a week add a hair treatment on toweldried hair for around 20 minutes. This will keep your hair moisturized and looking glossy for the summer.

Over the years I have styled Princess Beatrice’s hair many times. She has stunning glossy locks. We usually add a full head of medium sized rollers. I start by adding Hair Raising to the roots in 80% dried hair. Once I dry the product into the roots, I add a full head of Princess Beatrice Velcro rollers and leave them to set for 5-10 minutes. Once the rollers are taken out, I add a spritz of hairspray to give a long lasting hold. In the picture above you can do the same blow dry so your hair lasts for the whole duration of your event. Then add a hat and pin it with hairgrips to make sure it stays.

Nicky Clarke Aragon Oil (£20, 75ml)

At the beach or the pool I recommend adding two drops of Aragon Oil and distribute it throughout your hair to achieve a healthy and shiny look. Re-apply after swimming to protect your hair from drying out.

SUMMER MAKEUP TIPS When, if not during the summer, does a woman get to accentuate her natural beauty as well as play with the bold and colourful looks of the season? A beautiful natural and glowing suntan might be enough to make you look radiant, however the following five tips might enhance it. They are both suitable for daytime or summer evenings. Since everybody has a different skin type, bone structure and colouring I chose these five beauty icons to represent different types. It is quite important for you to understand what type you are and what palette you need for your look. For instance blondes or light skinned ladies usually should go easy on strong colours and stick to peach and nude tones. Those with darker pigments can use bronzer and bolder colours without looking overdone. BY VIKTORIA VALERIE RADER, BEAUTY & FASHION EDITOR

Great for both daytime and evening, this look sports a fresh, healthy and tanned glow that draws attention to the lips. Recommended Products: Giorgio Armani’s “Maestro Liquid Summer Bronzer” to illuminate the skin whilst adding a bronze shine, coating properly without appearing as if you are wearing makeup. The “Double Powder” set from Charlotte Tilbury is one of this summer’s musthaves, combining bronze and glow in one package. Using eye liner from Guerlain will accentuate your eyes without drawing too much attention away from the lips and mascara from Armani’s beauty line “Eyes to Kill”. Big eyebrows are popular this summer, and we recommend using Bobbi Browns “Brows Shadows” with “Rouge d’Armani Sheer Lipstick”.

The second look is very sensual and romantic, great for any occasion during the day. The look was created by Guerlain to be absolutely fresh and vital, but of course we don’t have to only use Guerlain product. Usually one gets the best results by using different products and mixing them. Guerlain foundation “Terracotta Joli Teint” is amazing for a sheer and untouched look, while Dior’s powder “Diorskin Nude Tan Tie Dye” finishes with a slight shine. Complete the transparent touch with Sisley’s “Palette Orchid Rose” blush and highlighter. Eye shadows “Phyto -Ombré glow”, also from Sisley, and gloss from Lancôme “Lio Lover” add just enough colours to bring out your features without looking like you are wearing makeup.

This look will make you feel sexy and confident. Tom Ford and Yves Saint Laurent use this mood to achieve a summer look, emphasizing independent yet feminine women. Unlike our previous look, the skin is matt and artfully contoured. “Luminous Silk Foundation” by Armani with “Luminous Silk Powder” will give you that matt finish while Tom Ford’s rouge “Cream Cheek Colour” adds just a little a bit of shine. Sisley’s amazing new product “Phyto 4 Ombres” comes in a set of four shadows that have been designed to blend together perfectly, creating deep and sensual eyes without getting too smoky. To keep the lips matt use Guerlain “Rouge G de Guerlain” and style the eyebrows with “3 Couleurs Glow” by Dior.

Of course we can’t go through the summer without an innocent baby-doll look at our disposal, and I really love how well Victoria Secret manages to make their angels look so sweet and yet sexy. We start by using the legendary “Météorites baby glow” light reflector cream, by Guerlain as well as their foundation “Parure Gold”. Tom Ford “Small Bronzing Powder” gives a light and soft shimmer to the skin, while Bobby Brown’s blush “Brightening Brick Pastel Pink” mixed together with “Shimmer blush” creates that flushed phenomenon associated with innocence and youth. “Dior Addict Lip Maximizer” for a pouty finish and some mascara by Chantecaille and “Faux Clis Longest Lash Mascara” to get those big, yet sophisticated doll eyes.

The fifth and last look is a bit classier and reserved, keeping it subdued while drawing out the best of your features. Inspired by Chanel it’s great for fancy summer nights out and red carpet events. Bobby Brown’s “Creamy Concealer Kit”, along with Armani’s foundation “Designer Lift” take care of any irregularities of the skin while “Shade Illuminate” by Tom Ford sculpts out high cheekbones. If you like you can add a subtle shimmer with “Les Beiges” powder by Chanel. Chanel’s lovely rouge “Joues Contraste” creates a healthy blush and the lip-gloss by Sisely “Phyto-Lip Gloss” accentuates a lovely pucker. Eyeshadow by Naked “Urban Decay”, eyeliner by Dior “Dior Addict It-Line” and mascara from Sisley “So Intense”.

BY SILJA LITVIN, SENIOR CORRESPONDENT we are exposed to. When we meet someone for the first time, we accumulate all of the information such as height, clothing, posture, language, and facial expressions but along with these obvious cues, we receive crucial subconscious information such as pheromones, micro-expressions and cultural hints. Instead of feedback being a one-way street (you are feeling happy, so you smile), our bodies give us feedback in both directions (we are smiling, so that means we must be happy and the brain releases dopamine). Studies shows that people who experience slight fear as they cross a bridge tend

attuned to your needs. Below are my top tips. BE FULLY HONEST WITH YOURSELF The better you know yourself and understand your needs (your needs, mind you – not what you think you want), the clearer you send signals to potential partners. It is also ok not to know 100% what you want in life, just be internally honest about it to avoid negativity. LISTEN PROACTIVELY When we speak we share the information we know, when we listen we can learn new things

THE PSYCHOLOGY BEHIND LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT I

will never forget how a family friend once told me that there is no love at first sight but maybe ‘attraction at first sight’ - love has to grow. Being a young girl at the time and romantically inclined I did not take kindly to her opinion, and up to this day I am still pondering about what my beliefs should be. Of course, in order to establish a strong hypothesis, one would need to find a general definition of love. Since that is a whole column in itself (or maybe a book or two), I will leave that for now and focus on what we call love at first sight. Most people are aware that the first few seconds of meeting someone now defines how we react to them. It is a mostly subconscious reaction born out of all the experiences we have had in our life. An automated pilot reaction system that is designed to assess and help process the never-ending information that

to attribute fears as arousal thus rating possible mates on bridges far more attractive than their peers in neutral scenarios. This is due to faster heartbeats, which make them think they are attracted to the people encountered at that moment. Put all this information together and you may have a ‘recipe’ for love at first sight. Scientists say that one day, we might even be able to develop an algorithm that can predict, monitor and evaluate the processes of falling in love. If you have had a protected childhood set in healthy emotional environment then this is all very good news as your subconscious mind will find you a suitable partner and love at first sight can flourish into what my family friend calls ‘real’ or ‘true’ love, and the great part about it is that you can train yourself to become more susceptible to the signals your subconscious is picking up and therefore become more finely

that we do not know. While I introduced mostly subconscious reactions at the beginning of the column, the next step is to actively process information. It is very hard sometimes to come into a conversation without prejudices, but once we eliminate our own ‘life filters’ we see people as they are. TAKE RISKS Meeting someone that moves our world in a positive direction can be as scary as it is exhilarating. Opening up and becoming vulnerable may feel hostile at first, but true intimacy and love can only grow when you open up and not let fear get you. A quintessential French vineyard on the shores of the Mediterranean, Château Léoube offers some of the best wines from the Provence. All their products are certified organic, the grapes are handpicked and the whole production process including bottling is done on-site at this beautiful estate. One of Europe’s most iconic nature reserves, Château Léoube stretches over 4 kilometres of magnificent coastline covering an area. of 650 hectares (65h of vines). WINE PROCESSES in the 21st century have rapidly changed and today a lot of machinery is involved in the process, however this unique producer is different. Château Léoube is a biodynamic and environmentally friendly viticulture that works in line with lunar and seasonal cycles. The winemaker knows how to integrate traditional growing methods and therefore weed killers are strictly forbidden and this passion and attention to detail creates some of the best wines in the world.

Every process is kept in harmony with our founder’s commitment to achieve long-term sustainability to produce topclass products.” MASTERS OF THE TRADE The Château Léoube Team devotes just as much of its time to grape growing as it does to winemaking and maturation. To do this, temperaturecontrolled stainless steel tanks have been adopted for fermentation as well as new concrete vats and casks used for storing wine. The Château Léoube cellar is designed to maximize gravity and keep the bunches intact right up until crushing and pressing. This delicate process takes over two hours at low pressure to get a clear and clean juice. This juice then spends between 12 and 48 hours in a tank at low temperature before starting the fermentation cycle.

FINE WINE INVESTMENT FINE WINE has outperformed almost every other major financial index over the past two decades. Fine wine possesses a remarkable track record as an investment with an extended period of annual growth. Past performance data have seen growth rates in the region of 12-20%. One of the major benefits of fine wine include the fact that it is not directly influenced by the other markets therefore, even in times of economic challenges, growth of fine wine continues, Moreover, the fact that wine is a consumable item, every time someone pulls the cork of a bottle, the value of the remaining bottles in the global market increases due to its limited quantity. Whilst traditional markets have been stable or witnessed losses over the last ten years the investors in fine wine have seen yearly double-digit returns over the past years. Wine as an investment has traditionally been associated with low levels of risk and stable returns, thanks to its unique characteristics as an asset. LIFESTYLE MADE TO MEASURE J

onathan Betesh is a Solicitor and entrepreneur providing quality bespoke tailoring (Jonathan Betesh) and luxury lifestyle services (The Coterie). Born and raised in nYC, Betesh grew up in a family dominated by many women which helped him develop a keen interest in fashion. At the age of 15, he started using tailoring services privately in order to seek the ultimate fit. After graduating from Law School, Betesh worked with one of Israel’s top litigators, Ram Caspi. Subsequently he decided to pursue his entrepreneurial ambition and passion to take his brand global. What is your tailoring philosophy?

Tailoring is an art. Italians do it for the love of creation so I had to find the balance between respecting a client schedule and the tailors appreciation and patience for creating a unique suit. In the beginning, I travelled to Italy for over two months, meeting suppliers,

manufactures and tailors. My main objective was to find out the quality of services I wanted to provide. I decided to work with a third generation Sicilian tailor (The Maestro) and use the Loro Piana fabrics. I am now very proud to provide a high standard of service, craftsmanship and some the best fabrics in the world. What is the process and timeline for creating a ‘made-to-measure’ suit?

I host clients in luxury hotel suites around world where my team showcase a vast array of quality garments and fabrics to select from. We then carefully and systematically measure a client for around 30-45 minutes. The next stage is very exciting: We get to choose the design, the fabrics, the stitching, lapels, buttons, pockets and more. We take this very seriously as we aim to create a beautifully personalized suit that will match the clients lifestyle and personality. Once we have all the

measurements and specifications, The Maestro and the naples workshop team commences the delicate process of putting the suit together. There is zero room for errors. After 6 to 8 weeks the garment is finally created and we personally deliver it to our client. Our goal is to provide a perfectly fitted suit whether it takes one fitting or 10, and I can confirm that this has never taken more than twice. What are the prices of products?

your

We use a large selection of luxurious fabrics such as the Four Seasons Wool, Zenith, Vicuna and the Record Bale, hence prices can vary. For overcoats we source the finest furs, including Mink, Orlyag and Chinchilla. Therefore, prices for a Suit starts at around £4,00o and up to £25,000, overcoats are from £6,000 and shirts from £400. Which kind of services does the Coterie provides? The Coterie that is part of the Betesh Group manages over 150 high net worth individuals. Clients usually request vacation planning for special getaways with family and friends and requirements includes private aviation, yacht charter, villa rentals and access to quality local service providers. We operate in 70 cities and the main regions booked are Israel, US, UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Greece and Spain. On a legal aspect I provide legal services in Israel dealing mainly with commercial requirements. Bespoke suits have been fashionable for decades, however the ‘travelling tailor service’ that Betesh provides enables discerning clients to have suits made anywhere in the world. In an era where clients require a solid service at any time and anywhere, nothing resonates more than this.

BEVERLY HILLS ROY AKIROV has been in the flooring business since 2004 when he and a number of partners formed ESB Flooring in Kingsbury, London. In 2010, Akirov moved to the US and in 2014 he launched Rhodium Floors and opened its flagship store on West Hollywood’s Melrose Avenue, only metres away from the Pacific Design Center.

You supply quality floors to high net worth individuals worldwide. Which kind of products do you offer and why are they special?

We simply source the finest materials and handpick samples from all over the world. We travel extensively to research the market and try to bring our customers unique, bespoke and inspiring flooring solutions. Our collections include reclaimed wood, natural stones and metals, slabs, decorative cement and Rhodium Floors exclusive products. What is your typical customers and how much does your flooring cost? I deal mainly with private designers and architects for HNW clients, but when its bespoke - just like a dress or suit the client makes an appointment to come in and review their options and play a big part of the creation. Prices start from £9 per sqft and there is no cap limit, for instance we recently had a client who requested an historic floor from an estate to be refilled into basket weave patterns with Calcutta squares interweaved at £48 per sqft. What are the current trends in the business? Sometimes, clients walk in to our showroom with all sorts of ideas and inventions and we have to make it work. For the better part the US market are going wider on the plank sizes and longer, 10-12” wide is not unheard of and lengths of up to 20 feet at times. This is not the most practical of concepts

because very few mills are able to work on such sizes but we always manage to satisfy our clients needs no matter what it takes. The turn around of items in our showroom is seasonal whereby we create new displays - much like a fashion store, so clients are always on their toes not knowing what to expect the next time they visit the Gallery. Can a floor enhance or influence a luxury interior? Yes, we find that many of today’s modern buildings have monotonous magnolia walls and plain interiors and therefore colours have to appear on furniture and floors. This is the first thing that people see when they enter a property. Therefore we can create unique patterned floors that shift the focus and grab attention. What is your vision for Rhodium Floors? To keep our clients coming back to us. I really aim for innovation and keeping up with European trends which are approximately 5 years ahead of US trends, hence I travel to Europe sourcing samples and attending interior shows. We are best known for our custom made floors and therefore we will always have that client walk in who just wants something out of the ordinary. We are very fortunate that many leading suppliers compete to showcase their selected items within our showroom space. For more information visit: www.rhodiumfloors.com and www.decoracementus.com

BUSINESS NEWS BY NOAM ESTABAN DELAROSA

Carl Icahn Netflix Exit Generates £2.1bn Profit US business leader Carl Icahn sold his last shares of netflix after the S&P 500-leading stock doubled its price this year, reaping a profit of least £2.1bn in three years. “All nFLX shares have been sold,” Icahn wrote recently on Twitter, using the sharemarket ticket for the video streaming company. The activist investor, 79, held 1.41 million netflix shares, making the latest sales worth about £800 million at current prices. He paid an average £5 a share for the stock in 2012, suggesting a profit of up to £500 million on the latest batch. The world’s largest Internet movie streaming service has produced an epic windfall for Icahn. Previous sales in 2013 and 2014 produced a profit of more than £700 million. At one point, he had over 5.5 million netflix shares. According to Icahn, Apple shares represent a similar opportunity. “Believe APL currently represents the same opportunity we stated nFLX offered several years ago.” he wrote, throwing his weight behind the

tech giant in which he’s a major investor. Icahn owns about 53 million Apple shares, according to Bloomberg data, worth about £4.8 billion. netflix’s market capitalisation has soared eightfold to more than £30bn since 2012 as the company expanded its pioneering Web-based TV service to more than 50 countries, including Australia, and signed up more than 62 million subscribers worldwide. This makes the company more valuable than US media behemoths CBS and Viacom. netflix service has evolved from being solely a buyer of shows and movies to become one of the active producers of TV, documentaries and films, with a long-term budget that approaches £6bn, according to filings. Icahn last month published an open letter to Apple Inc. CEO Tim Cook arguing that Apple should buy back more shares and that the stock is grossly undervalued. He says it should be worth £150 a share.

Livingston Brothers Build Mini-Cities in South America For £780m LOnDOn & Regional, a UK-based property company plans to invest more than £300 million to develop a luxury Cuban resort, which could be the single largest investment in the island since the Caribbean nation began normalizing diplomatic ties with the United States. According to Financial Times, the 1.5 million square foot joint venture project is called Carbonera. The resort is located 65 miles north of Cuba’s capital Havana, near the Varadero beach resort. The Cuban state run company Palmares SA would hold 51 percent ownership in the venture. The resort is being developed with Canadian

and European clients in mind. They are also presently developing a £455 million mini-city near Panama City called Panama Pacifico, involving 250 acres of commercial development and 20,000 homes. They hope to cater to US clients in the near future. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) estimates that the lifting of the US embargo could push the number of tourists visiting the island to well over 6 million, double the present amount. “We’ve long liked Cuba, and signed this deal before the US talks began,” Ian Livingstone told Financial Times. “I think the Cubans see it as something of a pathfinder project.” The Livingstone

brothers are no strangers to the region. One of the largest projects undertaken by the London-based property company is the redevelopment of the Elizabeth House hotel in Central London, a venture estimated to be £605 million. The company holds a property portfolio worth £9 billion. The Livingstone’s own many highend hotels, commercial as well as residential properties in London. They also own prime properties in Europe, South Africa and South America. Forbes estimated their combined net worth to be around £2.93bn

Airbnb £1bn Funding Raises Company Valuation to £13bn THE home rental service led by CEO Brian Chesky reportedly raised funds from General Atlantic, Hillhouse Capital and Tiger Global. The pace of the race to the top of Fortune’s Unicorn List continues to hasten as startups raise ever larger sums of money to fuel growth and expansion. Airbnb, the well-known home rental service headquartered in San Francisco, has closed a new £1bn funding round, according to reports from the Wall

38

Street Journal and Financial Times. The Airbnb website features more than 1.4 million entries of apartments, houses, rooms and exotic places for rent. The company generates revenue with its 3 percent commission for every successful booking on its webpage. It also collects around 6 percent to 12 percent service fee from guests. Revenue sales of the home rental service company are expected to surpass the £572 million mark this

year. Airbnb generated £160 million in revenue in 2013 and the company projected its revenue to reach £6bn in 2020, according to sources. The round, which has been rumoured for weeks, values the company at £13bn, much more than publicly traded neighbour Twitter TWTR 5.88%, had raised far less ahead of its highly anticipated 2013 IPO, and hotel giant Marriott MAR 0.76%, which runs more than 4,000 properties around the globe.

Larry Page Autonomous Driving Google Cars May Change Future of Humanity CARS that drive themselves are still perceived as controversial by some, however they can provide great benefits for the whole of humanity. 50 years ago we used to fly aeroplanes manually for long transatlantic journeys but today this cannot be comprehended (or legally practiced). We foresee that the same trend will take place with automobiles, both in private and commercial sectors. Google said in a statement: “Our software has now self-driven the equivalent of 75 years of typical U.S. adult driving. Along the way, we have navigated more

than 200,000 stop signs, 600,000 traffic lights.” Google also announced that the car had driven 1.7 million miles, but that number was for both autonomous and manual driving. The one-million-mile milestone the car just reached is for autonomous driving only. Google continued: “We have come a long way since Larry Page, Google President and CEO first challenged us to demonstrate that self-driving technology had long-term potential. Back in 2009, he gave us two audacious goals. The first was to drive 100,000 miles on public roads which

is 10 times more miles than had ever been completed by any autonomous driving team. The second was to drive 10 sets of 100 miles in Californian routes that included crossing the Golden Gate Bridge, navigating the curves of Lombard Street in San Francisco, and traversing 200+ traffic lights. We are taking this one-millionmile milestone as further proof that fully self-driving vehicles can become a reality and we’re looking forward to finding out where the next million miles will take us.”

Jeffrey Soffer And Richard LeFrak Miami Biscayne Landing Joint Venture CREATInG a South Florida partnership that unites two real estate dynasties, Richard LeFrak, chairman and CEO of LeFrak, and Jeffrey Soffer and Jackie Soffer, principals of Turnberry Associates, said they have entered into a joint venture to develop Biscayne Landing into a master planned community. The 183-acre site, at 15045 Biscayne Boulevard in north Miami, represents the largest undeveloped parcel of land east of Biscayne Boulevard in South Florida. It is zoned for 4,390 residential units and more than 1 million square feet of retail and commercial space. The joint venture partners did not disclose the financial terms of their partnership to develop what could be a £850 billion project. During a recent University of Miami Real Estate Impact Conference in Miami, LeFrak called Biscayne Landing “a generational land purchase,” and referred to an anonymous “ally” he would be bringing in to help him develop the site. As the conference’s keynote speaker, he called the massive development the “last great thing I have in me.” Adjoining Oleta River State Park, the project will have lots of green space, jogging and bike trails, a lifestyle shopping center, school and athletic facilities, he said. “It’s designed as a

community for people who live here,” he said, “not for people who come for three weeks of the year.” LeFrak and Soffer said they intend for the community to become a landmark destination and driving force for growth and progress in north Miami, not far from Aventura, where the Soffers’ father, Donald Soffer, created a community from former swampland. Over the past 50 years, Turnberry Associates has overseen and developed 785-acres of land, including Aventura Mall, Porta Vita, Turnberry Village, Turnberry Isle Resort and Country Club, Turnberry Ocean Colony, as well as the Fontainebleau Miami Beach and various other properties. “Turnberry Associates has six decades of experience in developing hospitality, residential, retail and commercial properties in South Florida as well as nationally and internationally, making them an ideal partner for us to jointly develop this site,” LeFrak said. LeFrak, who is based in new York and also owns a condo in Miami Beach, spearheads a family company founded in 1901, which has been involved in more than 400 buildings and 40 million square feet of real estate across the US.

Michael Dell Says Cloud Technology Is the Future CLOUD promises to revolutionize the future of IT service delivery by enabling a faster and more flexible way to meet the technology needs of organizations. Michael Dell says that companies should hitch their wagons to converged infrastructure, private cloud and managing hybrid cloud environments. “That’s going to be a good business for a long time,” he told CRn. The company is investing heavily in its enterprise product portfolio, channel incentives and enterprise innovation. In fact, the number of patents issued to the company last year jumped 28 percent compared with the year before. The Chief Executive, who owns 75 percent of the company since he took it private in a £20bn buyout in 2013, said that he sees enormous opportunities with open architecture innovation, hybrid cloud and hyper-converged infrastructure. When asked about how the industry going

to evolve in terms of technology, Dell said: “In the past we had these microprocessors and the buildup of the silos, the network, the storage, the computer and then all the Layer Four through Seven services. This is actually very complicated for end-users and expensive. Today, we have hyper-converged, software-defined to make things more efficient. The private cloud is a huge opportunity for our partnering community and we are absolutely driving that very, very heavily in order to compete with Microsoft, VMware, Linux Open Stack, nutanix. These software stacks provide capability equivalent to our industry-standard, high-volume architecture. “The cloud acts as a single point of control for implementation of governance policies and controls, unifying management accounts.

NEW PROPERTY INVESTMENT MODEL LAUNCHED COGRESS COMPANY REVIEW BY DAVID MILLER COGRESS, the specialist property investment company celebrates one year of prosperous operations in the UK. The company has over 1,000 potential investors with 16 projects since launch; with a gross development value of over £200m. Its sister-company Keren Hagshama in Israel has completed via the same ‘shared equity’ business model, 150 projects worldwide with a value of £800m. Real estate has always been a lucrative business. However, it has been a business that requires high capital for entry. Cogress, is changing the rules of the game by providing equity shares in residential and commercial projects with investment units starting from £20,000. The Financial Times reported earlier this year that Cogress’s investors enjoy an average of 20% return. We spoke to Tal Orly CEO about the company strategy within the UK. How is Cogress’s business model different than other property investment vehicles? Cogress provides investors with access to exclusive property investment opportunities in prime London locations. Once you register with us you can receive details each time we launch a new investment opportunity. The model involves an equity share in the development and therefore provides returns as a proportion of the profits on exit. Our property experts carefully vet the credentials of the developers (frequently having worked with them before) and run a lengthy feasibility study on the specific opportunity, typically selecting less than 10% of the deals. We offer complete transparency on the deals; from developer, due diligence, business plans, legal documents, planning as well as frequently touring the sites and introducing our investors to our developers. Ultimately we provide investors with the opportunity to enjoy rewards of property developments for a minimum investment.

Which professional organisations regulate your activities and where are investments kept? Cogress is an appointed representative of Resolution Compliance Ltd., which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. All of our investors’ capital is kept in a third party account that only the developer can access. We offer a complete business plan that illustrates key expense, projected profits and exit timelines that range between 18-36 months. What is your vision for the company? We aim to give a variety of people the opportunity to be part of the property development sector who would otherwise be unable to enter due to the cost of entry. Having been in the UK for only 1 year, we have experienced high demand with over 1,000 potential investors joining us. We anticipate interests to continually grow and therefore plan to open another office in central Europe by next year, as well as a US office currently opening. Our UK Gross Development Value (GDA) is more than £200m and we hope to more than double it within 12 months. Cogress has a reputable Advisory Board that carefully vets each project with due diligence to ensure complete satisfaction for all parties. Their Board includes Lord Mendelsohn, Stuart Polak CBE, Hannan Shemesh Co Founder & Chairman and Avi Katz President and Co Founder. Katz is one of Israel’s best known entrepreneurs having created the Cofix coffee chain and the Blue Square.

Tal Orly, CEO Cogress.

Cogress’s model is an innovative idea that enables investors to participate in the market without risking too much capital. With so many options to invest in nowadays, investors are looking for transparency, high ROI and confidence. Cogress might offer just that. Cogressltd.co.uk

LONDON PRIME REAL ESTATE 5 YEARS FORECAST BY ANNA GOLUS, PROPERTY CORRESPONDENT

Statistics and market growth indicates that London’s best properties are due to appreciate by 25% by 2020. This is the largest increase within any market in the world; in second place NYC with 16% increase, HKG 15%, Shanghai 13%, Moscow 12% and Monaco 10%. One of the strongest markets in London is the rental sector, this has grown sharply with expansion of the technology and telecommunications sectors contributing to a 4.2% annual growth. Although the summer months are set to see a seasonal dip whilst people are away on holiday, there is also less demand typically saving between 3-4% on purchase prices. ROLEX CELEBRATES

40 YEARS IN ISRAEL

Danny Peiser President of Euro Asia at the ceremony (Photographer: Eliran Avital)

Rolex, the luxury Swiss watchmaker celebrated its 40th anniversary earlier this month at a special ceremony at Caesarea’s Gulf Club. The event, attended by over 2,000 distinguished guests from all over the world in order to mark the unique occasion enjoyed special artistic performances and keynote speeches.

We are extremely proud to represent this internationally acclaimed brand and hope to continually provide topclass services to our clients.”

Danny Peiser, President of Euro-Asia, Israel Rolex Official Representative, said: “Today we mark a monumental milestone in the history of Rolex in Israel. For four decades we have successfully catered discerning customers within our Official Rolex Show Boutiques in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Eilat and Raanana.

Although the brand is known internationally as being Swiss, the origins of Rolex started in London back in 1908 by two immigrants, Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davies. The Founders moved to Geneva in 1919 due to high taxes and for nearly a century contributed to perfecting Swiss watchmaking processes and craftsmanship.

During the event, Euro Asia announced the launch of the 2015 novelties of Rolex and Tudor watches. Interesting facts about Rolex:

To date, every Rolex is still assembled by the hands of Specialist Technicians. Precision machinery is used to manufacture parts and to ensure quality control, however beyond this the whole process is man-made. In 1953 Rolex watches were taken to the top of Mount Everest, and in 1960 to the lowest point on earth (the Mariana Trench) and remarkably the watches functioned without skipping one single second.

A monumental milestone for Rolex.

Rolex supports top sporting and cultural events all over the world. It is present at more than 150 events in golf, sailing, tennis, motor sport, the arts, and at equestrian tournaments. Given the longevity and strength of these relationships, in its sponsorships, Rolex is seen not merely as a sponsor, but also as a partner. Excellence and individual achievement also underlie the company’s two philanthropic programmes, the Rolex Awards for Enterprise and the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative, which foster the human spirit and champion human endeavour.

ROTHSCHILD BOULEVARD BOUTIQUE HOTEL Rothschild 71 is located in the heart of Tel-Aviv, providing guests with a local residential experience that is different to popular beachfront resorts. Our Tourism Correspondent ERAN JASSBY stays at the renovated historic building and evaluate its “home-feel” characteristics.

T

HE entrance to the hotel is very discreet and can barley seen from the vibrant street level of the Rothschild Boulevard. Upon entering the building the first thing that I have noticed was the fact that there was no reception desk. Instead, I was greeted by two friendly members of staff that escorted me to a large comfortable seating area and light drinks where served. Once settled and relaxed the check-in process began informally yet professionally. Alon Levy, the General Manager describes the approach: “The philosophy of the hotel is providing a first-class bespoke service within an environment where guests feels as if they are in a modern contemporary living room, rather then a hotel lobby”. True to this core message, the ambient is set with usage of abstract paintings, photographs and art to decorate spaces. Levy gives me a tour of the hotel and to my surprise I notice that each and every room has a different feel to it. Some Suites have hanging plants climbing on top of balconies while others had original artwork from the 1950 and

60’s displayed. Some have large living rooms with wooden furniture and other take a more modern line with clean-white patterns. The more we explore the building it is apparent that rooms are not designed to look like hotel rooms but to resemble personalized apartments. Many tourists that visit Israel have an average timeframe of about one to three weeks. Therefore they cannot fully comprehend how it feels to live like a local in a standard Tel Aviv neighbourhood. My one night stay at the Rothschild 71 was unique because it enabled me to experience the unique vibes that Rothschild Boulevard and its surrounding neighbourhoods elude. These penetrate the hotel and immerse guests with local culture, cuisine and fashion.

original identify and today it offers 25 careful designed suites that offers fantastic view of the Boulevard. All the suits are fitted with premium Egyptian Cotton Linen, private dining areas and the state-of-the-art ‘Penthouse and Rothschild Suites’ boasts large wooden sundecks. Furthermore, authentic Israeli and Mediterranean cuisine are served at the Cantina Restaurant. 71 Rothschild Boulevard T: +972(0) 3 6290555 E: info@the-rothschild.com The-rothschild.com

The Rothschild 71 is a part of the city’s history as it was built in 1934 by Dr. Moshe Krieger and Dr. Fanny Chlenov. The renowned physicians ran a highly popular clinic in the building that was frequently used by some of the most iconic leaders during the British Mandate and afterwards. Several years later, the icon was carefully converted into a hotel whilst preserving its
