Secret 7” was a brief I was looking forward to within this module. It was something I enjoyed last year alot and was excited to see what tracks had to offer this year. I believe the main reason I looked forward to it was havin both an interest in both design and music. Also many designers i appreciate and use as influence in my other work such as Peter Saville and Brian Roetinger have created some exellent sleeves. My first point of call was to explore each of the tracks individually by listening to them whilst brain storming. This is a method of idea generating I do do usually get to do but found really helpful. The designs i produced really worked well in a set and if id have had more time i wish i could have designed all 7 designs in a monochromatic and minimal style. This would have helped them stand out within the exhibition. Overall I found secret 7’ to be very unrestricted and experimental, I kind of project in which i can explore certain design ideas i usually wouldnt within my work. The two sleeves work well successfully together but an improvement could have been made within the production, i kept these two digital but could have been explored further with screen printing to crean a much more textured and tactical finish. This had lead me to find an interest within design for music and I have found myself a project in my own time to rebrand a friends record label.

This was the first project to be completed, It was a very quick response and not my usual design outcome. The brief asked for a wrapping paper design which is something I had never done before, this was a great opportunity to try something new and expland my creativity. The brief gave no theme so i began to research around the shop which created the brief (Urban Outfitters). Strong visuals surrounded the shop, with stripped bare concrete, wood, vinyl covers and skatebaords. The research stage informed my final outcome by being the inspiration for the work. Past entries served as research also, finding mixed media, typography and hand drawn elements. One illustrator i became fond of called Raphael Garnier served as my main inspiration, collage and abstract illustration. This opened my eyes up to different forms of design and I have decided to take it upon myself to try new things.

My initial reaction to the penguin choices of books was that A Clockwork Orange was the most interesting out of the set chosen but would be the most diffcult due to the number of young creatives that will choose this and the amount of designs the book currently had for its cover. Never the less I saw this as a challenge, the brief asked for a fresh approach to the cover and something to make it grab attention whilst on a shelf. I approached this by outlining ideas that had already been created such as using cogs and oranges or the main character as the focus. I explored the concept of the Ludovico Technique within the book, the marriage of something Mechanical and Natural. This technique lead me onto finding art direction within Psychological books, these served as good inspiration through abstract shapes. One problem I faced was the use of the pattern i created, i believe it effects the typography on the page, i counteracted this by using white text. One thing that made this different to other briefs was its strict use of layout, I followed this with attention to detail.

Choosing this brief was mainly due to it being a different kind of subject matter that i am used to, a chance to research something i do not know much about. It was also a chance to get some professional looking work done, the smaller briefs had lead me through graphic experimentation and I wanted to execute a prossional and clean design for this. One thing I struggled with was finding a concept that was strong from the beginning, the brief asked for a campaign that would intice younger people to go to the opera. As a young adult after researching i found myself not interested in the opera at all, one thing I identified with however was the emotional aspect of the plays, much like music or films we are all used to. This lead me to create a range of posters that promoted the emotional aspect of watching an opera and through expressive typography this would attract attention. My time managment for this project was unsatisfactory, A range of posters and stickers was the main bulk of the brief. I believe the openess and interchangeability of the posters gave opportunity to create design competitions for young creatives and students. I stated this on my presentation boards but if i would of had more time before the deadline I would have created a social media side of the campaign, a call for entry’s for design students to get involved. This would have also opened the campaign up to a different audience, young creatives who have a strong interest within art and music and may find a interest in the Opera too.

Initially I was excited to work in a group, to collaborate with other students from other classes. I chose this project for Brief 02 as I saw it a great opportunity to work on something Innovative, fresh and different. The brief asked for a beauty product targeted at both male and female, My initial thoughts for this was something minimal, modern and very clean. Our research took us in a very different direction, hand drawn elements and a focus on nature. This was unexpected but it was informed my a questionaire one group member undertook themselves so it seemed to be in the right direction. One thing i believe we all struggled with was thinking on a name for the concept, we settled on Eden due to its links to nature. Another thing we struggled with was communication, many times when we wanted to meet it seemed that someone was always in a class. We counteracted this by sharing work we had done through facebook groups. The end result i felt was unsatisfactory, I feel it did not meet the brief as it seemed to femenine due to the leaves and the choice of bright colours in the jars did not fit the theme of nature, these seemed too chemical based. This really opened my eyes to working in a group, the positive been that ideas genererate much more quickly but creative direction can be effected when trying to please everybody.
