Economy Boost in S.C. Black Friday 2009,the traditional annualbarometerfor the healthof the United States'holiday shoppingseason, received a pleasantboostfrom SouthCarolinasportsmenandwomen. For a 48-hourtime frarne, which beganat midnight on November 27,2009,firearms were tax exempt. Statelawmakers called the weekendshoppingspreethe "Second Amendment Weekend."As a result, gun stores, sporting goods dealershipsand South Carolina shooting venueshad lines that extendedout their doors and were jam-packed all day long. According to Jody Welch who owns a retail gun store in the South Carolina Lowcountry, his store was "very busy, very busy. When we opened the doors there were probably 45-50 people standingoutside waiting." Welch increasedhours of employment for additional staff to accommodate the deluge of customers,a side-benefitfor the local economy. 2009 marks the secondtime South Carolina has initiated a tax-free gun weekend. Each time there has been a tremendouslypositive effect on the economy.
