Dublin’s Royal Canal as urban social infrastructure
A place for community engagement through the Physical
JAN ‘13 - JUNE ‘13
OCT ‘12 - DEC ‘12
Project one is based in Dublin’s north inner city. It is a project that sets about reusing the existing Royal canal Infrastructure as a piece of Social infrastructure and PRUH VSHFLȴFDOO\ VSRUWLQJ LQIUDstructure.
Project two is based in the same vicinity as project one. This was the testing of the idea and trying to examine the site through architecture. It was the initial step for the thesis project, where ideas where formed, some discarded but some kept on and examined deeper.
It is a catalyst for unlocking a route way along the length of the canal but also promoting its use within the communities and the wider city as a whole. It is a new place for a portion of the city which lacks identity or strives to ȴQG RQH The Canal and its bank provide the site and also the linear route through the city, from its periphery to the heart of the city in the QHZ 'RFNODQGV E\ WKH 5LYHU /LH\
This iteration deals with a large building sitting on the landscape. The building is the emphasis of the project with the landscape becoming secondary, something that changed moving forward into the thesis project. The program is one of sport, with civic and social elements also to entice the community to engage with the building and create a centre for the community.

Project three dealt with and examined the high density living required for the competition brief. The competition was to design new living and recreation space in the heart of Dublin city, along a street that need both public and private space.
Project four is a new build, cenWUDO Č´UH VWDWLRQ LQ WKH WRZQ RI North Andover, located north of Boston, Massachusetts.
3URMHFW Č´YH ZDV D WRXFKVWRQH project for the development of the idea which was brought on through projects one and two.
It is approximately 16,00 sq/ft and is under construction as of late November 2014.
The design allowed for a layering of space to occur, from public gathering spaces to private enclosed gardens as well as new retail units such as cafe and restaurant to be places, inviting occupancy of the street and a new feeling of community.
The building is a double volume, consisting of an apparatus wing and an administrative wing. Both have to function independently but also harmonise to achieve HÉ?FLHQW UHVSRQVH WLPHV IRU Č´UVW responders on call.

Project six is a variety of photographs spanning several years. The photographs chosen are a small selection which capture momententary emotions.
The apartments vary in size from 1,2,3 and 4 bed with also duplex available. They all have private balcony space as well as indoor amenities in each building.
The project is located in a very conservation art of New England, upstate Massachusetts and therefore presented some design challenges both for the public committees and planning boards.
The projects deals with a junction in the building which allows for a new social space to be carved from within and puncture into the front courtyard of the campus, creating a dynamic entryway alive with activity.
The photographs portray a variety of subjects, from desolate landscapes to bustling city or iconic monuments. Each shot captures a conscious framing and construction of an image. DUBLIN’S SOCIAL INFRASTRUCTURE “Nothing of me is original. I am WKH FRPELQHG HÎ?RUW RI HYHU\RQH ΖȇYH HYHU NQRZQ Č‹- Chuck Palahniuk Of the two canals which encapsulate Dublin City, the Royal Canal has been neglected while the Grand Canal has been nurtured by the thriving city. The Royal has become a forgotten entity on the cities periphery. It once was a thriving waterway to the Midlands of the country, while now it’s GHVRODWH DQG FXW RÎ? The site bound by water and housing, hugs to the inner city bank of the Royal Canal and needs to be reused, it’s under-utilised and needs to be given back to its city. The site is located within a run-down and undervalued part of Dublin’s urban fabric. It is the North Lotts RI WKH FLW\ ERUGHULQJ 6KHULÎ? 6WUHHW DQG 1RUWK 6WDQG Road. A part of the city which has a large community but a community unto itself, and seen as a negative. This project deals with the only portion of the bank of the Royal Canal which is inaccessible to the public in its 145km length, a piece that can give so much back not just to the city but to the individual communities that are adjacent to the canal. The full length of the canal is a public
walking route, “The Royal Canal Wayâ€?, except for this RQH SRUWLRQ WKDW LV ORFNHG DQG IHQFHG RÎ? IURP DFFHVV The program for the project is sport and activity, spawned from the idea that the canal is and has been an active walkway following its length from Dublin to the River Shannon. Activity will be the catalyst for community interaction and engagement, with the city and with their immediate environment. The project is in essence two distinct elements; landscape and buildings, where landscape is primary and buildings are the secondary. The landscape meanders and follows the canal bank and provides surfaces and spaces for people to actively use. The buildings add a layer of infrastructure to this idea, they support the landscape by providing social aspects such as cafes and gym space to the park. This parkway in the city could be an urban greenway which connects the city back to the communities on its edge, a place for urban escape, a place to encourage interaction and foster community. The landscape promotes activity but also provides a vital link along the canal, by creating an open passage between the Mayor Square area and the North Strand Road area, a walking distance of only minutes, this not only links the communities which inhabit the edge of the city but connects the wider scale of the city back to the existing and new canal walkway and the new link cy-

This portion of the canal, is an unused piece presently owned by Irish Rail that has been leftover and abandoned since the development of the railway lines through the city. The linearity of the infrastructure is expressed through the landscape design, and linearity of the routes through the park. The Towers have hard concrete bases anchoring them, a juxtaposition to the softness of the landscape, while the taller, lighter portion sitting above, is a delicate lightweight wrapping which through its materiality exposes the internal activities of the spaces and creates the image of the active nature of the park. In addition to the Towers, there are four small linear, buildings, anchored within the landscape. These buildings are directly related to the external program adjacent to them. They are pieces of the landscape as opposed to the Towers which counteract its linearity by being the vertical elements.

The project facilitates a link through itself across the canal to the newer residential developments which occupy the north bank of the canal. The active landscape utilises the all-encompassing nature of sport and provides surfaces for activity to occur, informal and elementary in their nature. The landscape slots into an unused piece of land left over from infrastructural development. The landscape enhances connections between the communities and utilises the land left over by a introduction of simple program and by providing a point of activity in the otherwise neglected area. Sport provides a use that facilities both physical and social engagement by its very nature. It allows for people to come together in an informal manner and become more
active in the ever increasingly passive city. A city where people are withdrawing from a social realm into urban solitude, something people and looking for on a daily basis. The building sits within a seven minute walk of a critical transport hub in Dublin, the connection of Busaras Bus Depot, Connolly Railway Station and the Luas lines all converge on Amien Street. Provision has been made for both public spaces as well as semi-public of the Sports Club. A Cafe and Bar have been provided to allow for the public to actively engage with the physical building even if they are not partaking in sporting activity, so as to allow for more engagement with the community and not withdrawal from the social realm albeit it not through what is seen as the “active. The building is anchored through a carved solid form at ground level which addresses both aspects of approach allowing for public space to be pared from the building to act as entrance points and points of external circulation. Through these spaces people can meander beyond to the active landscape.

RIAI TRAVELLING Ȋ$ FLW\ LV QRW DQ DFFLGHQW EXW WKH UHVXOW RI FRKHUHQW YLVLRQV DQG DLPV ȋ /HRQ &ULHU This project was for the RIAI Traveling Scholarship in Ireland, open to students of Architecture. The brief for design ZDV H[WUHPHO\ KLJK GHQVLW\ XUEDQ GZHOOLQJV RQ D VSHFLȴHG site in Dublin city. Each dwelling had to have its own private outdoor space as well as vital amenities available on site. This housing scheme includes 180 units. A variety of 1, 2 and 3 bed units are incorporated within the design to accommodate a large variety of occupants, from the single person to the small family. It is a housing model based upon high density urban communities which work well in Chinese and American cities. The design has three distinct realms, taking advantage of the fall across the site, providing a lower level public space fronted by a vibrant cafe and market/retail zone, creating a public connection from Cork Street Through the new public space, a raised semi-public space, accessed by steps from the Cork Street level. The steps provide a minor threshold to the semi-public space from the public street. The third space, a private space for residents is
located to the southern end of the site providing a garden sanctuary to which the public cannot gain access. The formal internal square is orientated to maximise its aspect to the southern sun, which dictated the surrounding buildings height, the lowest block facing south onto Chamber Street. The variation in facade allows for privacy and minimal overlooking to occur, as no window directly faces another opposite, being spaced so as a minimum of 300mm occurs between facing windows. Units are primarily dual aspect and all apartments have a private balcony space to avail of. By providing a diversity of unit types it allows for diversity within the building, accommodating single resident living to family living. A school without a large or emphasised social grain is a system of generic learning where life occurs and develops outside of its walls, rather than creating the environment where the social skills can develop in tandem with the progression through the educational system. - Extract from Thesis Dissertation This project is the manifestation of a thought process which initially led to a thesis project. The project took an existing building and tried to create a new social space within, by minor alterations and incisions, keeping the majority of the existing intact and making strategic movements and shifts.
An examination of the existing fabric of the building showed it was a functioning building with an evident lack of space for incidental and informal meetings of social circles. The building provides working studios and workshops, which by their very nature are insular with very little crossover between the school of architecture and the school of construction, who also inhabits the Linenhall campus. This proposal is an insertion of a new layer into the already multi- layered building fabric. It allows informal gatherings to occur like in the social spaces of its neighbour, DIT Bolton Street. This allows for more interaction between the two schools who soon will be merging to form DSA+C, Dublin School of Architecture and Construction.
