LEITH IN BLACK AND RED Tommy Perman Calendar 2015
Leith in Black and Red Tommy Perman Calendar 2015
Leith in Black and Red is a series of drawings which explore the rich character that has made Edinburgh’s port the most identifiable district of the city. I am interested in why the people of Leith are so proud of their place. Through this collection of studies I explore Leith’s streets and the idiosyncratic design choices made by shop owners, town planners and local residents alike. I have chosen the duo-chromatic colour scheme as a way of filtering the subject matter and giving a uniformity to the series. Black and red have been selected for their long established use in graphic design, particularly political propaganda – a fitting palette for Leith which has a strong history of socialist politics. Since 2005 I have been taking ‘colour walks’ as a form of treatment for central serous retinopathy – a condition I developed in my mid twenties. Treatment encourages you to strengthen your eye muscles by varying your focal range from near to mid to far. The idea is to pick a colour then go for a walk and try to spot that colour. This therapeutic exercise has influenced the way I see ever since. Living in Leith, over the past few years I have noticed the colours black and red often play an integral part in the design of local architecture and shop signage. Red also colours the docks: on hulls of ships and the old iron anchors, winches and moorings that adorn the shore. I began this project at the very end of 2012 and have been working on it ever since. My long term plan is to make a book containing all my drawings of Leith. This calendar is a step towards that goal. I hope you enjoy looking at my drawings. Have a great year. Cheers Tommy
