Spirit of the Sea
Falmouth is bursting with beautiful beaches, top-notch attractions, historical sites and maritime heritage, all framed by stunning natural scenery and shimmering blue sea.
On the water
Just beachy
Home to the world’s third largest natural deep-water harbour, Falmouth’s maritime legacy is core to its working life. With industries such as boatbuilding, fishing, marine engineering, shipping and watersports - its coastal culture is both economically vibrant and charming to visitors.
A host of beaches fringe Falmouth, offering everything from sun-kissed shores to high-octane action. From surfing to sailing and sunbathing to snorkelling, everyone can enjoy the area’s varied oceanside activities.
Legend has it... Not only do the port and docklands help secure Falmouth’s industrial success, they also represent a rich history which saw kings and famous seafarers stamp their mark on the town. From the Royal Mail packet ships to smugglers and pirates, trading and travel have defined Falmouth’s history for hundreds of years and still continue to sculpt its modern day character.
“ Foodies, lovers of the coast and countryside, shopping connoisseurs and art lovers are all spoilt here. In one town, Falmouth has it all and I love it.” Tamsin Loveless Head of Communications, National Maritime Museum Cornwall See page 19
Attractions aplenty There’s a spectacular array of things to see and do in Falmouth. Built by King Henry VIII, Pendennis Castle and St Mawes Castle proudly guard the estuary while the National Maritime Museum Cornwall honours Falmouth’s heritage. Combined with parks and gardens and a wealth of cafés, restaurants and bars not to mention an all-year-round events and festival schedule - Falmouth, quite simply, is the place to visit in Cornwall.
“It’s great to be in Falmouth. Outside Padstow it’s my favourite seaside town in Cornwall.” Rick Stein See page 42

Partnership Falmouth Key to Falmouth’s growing success is a series of partnerships in place to ensure operations within the town are smoothly run and constantly evolving. All striving and working closely together to make Falmouth a better place for both its residents and visitors, the dynamic partnership scheme comprises a number of networks whose sole aim is to support the local economy, people and culture, helping them to continually flourish. The Falmouth Business Improvement District (BID) is a not-for-profit company responsible for delivering a number of innovative projects that aim to improve the trading environment of Falmouth. It is business-led - with over 400 businesses involved, who constantly deliver initiatives such as destination marketing, new events and festivals, PR campaigns, public realm improvements and business training programmes. Established in 1866, The Port of Falmouth Chamber of Commerce comprises a group of local business people from a range of sectors whose aim is to promote the port and town for the benefit of the members and the wider community. The Falmouth Town Forum is an ideas and consultation group whose purpose is to assist the Town Council and other agencies in developing Falmouth for the benefit of its residents, students and businesses. The apolitical Forum unites representatives of a variety of groups and organisations in the town from the commercial, charitable and statutory sectors. Recent work includes the long-term development of Falmouth, the Falmouth and Penryn Community Plan, greater waterside access, traffic management, tourism development, the Business Improvement District and youth issues. Created to support and inspire Falmouth residents, businesses, visitors, the local authorities and service providers, The Take Pride in Falmouth Committee encourages all to take pride in the town through maximising efforts to maintain an attractive, safe, clean, smart and litter-free town and waterfront through regular and continuous good housekeeping. Seagull-proof bins, regularised rubbish collections, information campaigns, research into the origins and clean-up techniques of water-borne litter, a code of conduct for businesses, a graffiti cleaning machine and working partnerships have all been instrumental to their campaign. Formed in 1974, Falmouth’s Quality Town Council currently comprises sixteen elected Councillors to help undertake a variety of local services from planning and highways to shopmobility, parks and gardens, Community Grant Awards and Christmas lighting. Involved in a mass of projects, their work is an integral part of the core alliance of Falmouth’s partnerships that continue to drive the town forward and afford it a well-esteemed and popular place on the map. Fal River Cornwall is a destination marketing partnership with over 100 members. It promotes the Fal River as Cornwall’s most popular visitor destination with Falmouth and its ferry hub at the heart of the area.
Spirit of the Sea Falmouth is synonymous with the sea. A centre of enterprise and communication, its historical roots are bound to its magnificent harbour and maritime culture. More than a mere fishing port, Falmouth boasts the third largest natural deepwater harbour in the world. It is flanked by Pendennis & St Mawes Castles, King Henry VIII’ s impenetrable forts built to protect the harbour from French and Spanish fleets. With a history of traders from Greece, Rome and Gaul visiting over 2,000 years ago, Falmouth has continued to capitalise on its trading town status throughout every historical age. Charles II’s royal charter in 1661 further opened the waterside gates, while in 1688 - with Sir Water Raleigh’s vision combined with the sponsorship of the Killigrew family - Falmouth’s port was born. It became the Royal Mail’s Packet Station where Custom House Quay dispatched dozens of packet ships, rapidly expanding its destinations to include the West Indies and North and South America

which, in turn, surpassed London’s shipping activity in tonnage terms. Diversifying its workforce and expertise across all sectors - from boat building to fishing - the inception of the Falmouth Docks and railway rapidly increased the town’s burgeoning prosperity and reputation. With transport came tourism, as visitors began to admire the area’s distinct and diverse offerings and spectacular scenery. Today, modern developments see Falmouth as a university town with a vibrant student population, a commercial port and industrial entity, popular holiday destination and internationally renowned cultural and artistic centre. A place of poise, Falmouth’s relationship with the ocean and its people continues to strike a careful balance between industrial innovation and the surrounding natural environment. With an ever-growing visitor economy resulting in a wealth of attractions, gardens and innovative transport solutions
such as Fal River Links and the Fal Mussel Card, this Cornish harbour town continues to adapt to the needs and challenges of its people, both on a local and global scale, whilst capturing the imagination of everyone who visits.

(Map Ref: G10) Castle Beach makes an ideal spot for snorkelling and rock pooling, providing a quiet and sheltered stretch that also features a café. (Map Ref: I9) Tunnel Beach is sheltered by a high sea wall and provides a safe yet rocky stretch of sand that connects to Castle Beach on a low tide. (Map Ref: H9) Swanpool Beach includes a café, crazy golf and children’s play area, watersports centre and kayak hire - ideal for families and those seeking something more energetic. Maenporth Beach is flat and safe, providing seasonal lifeguards and a café. It is also home to award-winning restaurant, The Cove. This 2.5-mile walk starts at Custom House Quay before winding past the docks toward Pendennis Point, with stunning views along the way. Coastal walks are a great way to blow away the cobwebs and take in some refreshing sea air. Take your pick from the local coastal footpaths or for a real treat venture further afield and explore the many miles of river and coastal trails around the Roseland, St Mawes, Trelissick, Helford and Fal River, where you’ll find paths and places to suit every ability. One to try is the world famous South West Coast Path which runs across the entrance to the Fal River and is enjoyed by thousands of walkers every year. The path follows a cliff-top route and enjoys some stunning views of the bay, river and surrounding coastlines. For detailed walks, head to www.falriver.co.uk/walks

Explore the wonders of world’s oceans. The Falmouth Aquarium is a unique Cornish charity with local and international links. Rather than focusing on large marine mammals like other aquariums, the Falmouth Aquarium provides a more personal experience with coral reefs, small colourful and rare tropical fish and the chance to see tiny creatures that live under the sea that the public wouldn’t normally be able to observe. We are a unique facility, where we combine aquarium tanks with museum exhibits to enhance the visitors’ learning and experience. As a charity, our mission is to provide marine education and promote awareness about the issues facing our oceans. Our exhibits are aimed at all levels and ages, from 2 years old to 18 and beyond. An exciting all-weather tourist attraction and educational facility, it is a place where the public start to understand and fall in love with the oceans providing the opportunity to watch and learn about sea-life. “Really impressed by Falmouth Aquarium - great fun and educational for all ages and good value for money. Winner of Large Attraction of the Year at the 2012 Cornwall Tourism Awards, the Museum features a number of stunning exhibitions dedicated to the sea, boats and Cornwall. The blockbuster Search & Rescue exhibition invites you to enter the world of the maritime rescue services where ordinary people lead extraordinary lives, risking their lives to save yours. Experience the drama of a rescue, climb aboard a Sea King helicopter, meet the crews, explore a lifeboat, hit the ‘beach’ on a quad bike, revisit rescues from the past and discover what it takes to bring you home safely when the worst happens at sea and around our coast. More than just a Museum about boats, explore the stories of the people who used these vessels and the adventures they had in them. Ascend the 100ft Look Out tower and see Falmouth’s famous harbour from the skies, then descend into the Tidal Zone to appreciate one of only three natural underwater galleries in the world - and the cormorants, seals, shrimp, bass and mullet swimming by its epic 22ft tall tidal windows. Be spellbound by a sky filled with a flotilla of flying boats and lose yourself in a world of maritime history. With hands-on activities, talks, lectures, workshops, rotating events and exhibitions, there’s so much happening, don’t miss your chance for a visit. The National Maritime Museum Cornwall is the Museum to have fun in whatever the weather!

The Mayor The purpose of this guide is to provide a central source of information about Falmouth for residents and visitors alike and specifically our Events programme, so that everyone can take advantage of all that our historic and dynamic town has to offer. Overlooked by the historic Pendennis Castle the Town of Falmouth has recently celebrated the 350th Anniversary of the granting of the Town’ Royal Charter to Falmouth by King Charles II. During the celebrations Falmouth was in contact with twelve other Falmouth’s around the world. The Oyster Festival in October has become a highlight in the annual calendar of events in both Cornwall and nationally. Our parks and gardens are always nominated in the Awards at Britain Bloom and as well as receiving four Green Flag Awards we have been nominated as a 2013 National Entry in Britain in Bloom. We were the best Seaside Town in the South West in 2012. Falmouth is host to the International Sea Shanty Festival and the International Male Voice Choral Festival. The four main beaches from the Castle to Maenporth are some of the cleanest in the county. We have recently developed an innovative approach to Beach Management. The dredging in the channel will enable us to improve the experience for cruise ship passengers and will also secure the future of the Docks. Finally, as well as the Town having the honour of hosting the 2013 County Armed Forces Day, we welcome back the magnificent Tallships to our Port in 2014; further recognition of our standing and desirability as a destination to visit. Councillor Geoffrey Evans C.C Town Mayor www.falmouthtowncouncil.com
From short courses to degrees and MBAs, Falmouth University is uniquely placed to offer inspirational locations, excellence in teaching and international links. Falmouth provides the best innovative facilities and spaces for studying art and design, media and performance, writing and business.
