Fiji’s international airport, Nadi, sits on the west coast of the largest island, Viti Levu, where visitors are greeted with a sweet serenade of guitars, ukuleles and rousing singing. From Nadi, there are domestic flights across to the capital, Suva, on the east coast, and up to Vanua Levu and Taveuni, Fiji’s second and third largest islands. Only 110 islands are inhabited, accessed by seaplanes, helicopters, light aircraft, speedboats and catamarans, so getting to your island paradise is all part of the adventure! Further north, the strikingly beautiful Yasawa Islands are ancient volcanic isles surrounded by swathes of astonishing beaches, with jagged green peaks surveying the coral reefs below. To the northeast, Vanua Levu and Taveuni – Fiji’s ‘Garden Island’ – are lush, green playgrounds known for waterfall hikes, coastal walks and some of the world’s best diving. A boat ride from Taveuni, Matangi Island’s Horseshoe Bay is surely one of the most memorable private picnic spots in the world! The population today is around 900,000, a harmonious blend of indigenous Fijians, Indo-Fijians, Chinese, Europeans and other Pacific Islanders. English is the official language with Fijian and Hindustani widely spoken, and aspects from each culture can be seen across the islands. Fiji’s rich culture and deep-rooted traditions play a vital role in everyday life, with kava ceremonies in particular being hugely significant. Marking religious and celebratory occasions, as well as a time to socialise with friends and family, kava ceremonies are prevalent throughout Fiji. When visiting a local village, you may well be invited to take part in a kava ceremony, during which it is important to dress respectfully and modestly, with shoulders and knees covered with a sulu, a Fijian sarong. It is customary to present a gift of yaqona (the kava plant) to the village chief.

Most resorts host regular cultural evenings, including a kava ceremony with traditional singing and dancing, known as a meke. During the ceremony, guests sit around the tanoa the kava bowl, which is placed in front of the leader. The root of the yaqona plant is pounded and the pulp is placed in a cloth sack and mixed with water, the end result is a slightly bitter, peppery drink. When offered a bowl of kava, you must clap once, shout ‘Bula!’, take the cup from your host, drink in one gulp, then clap three times and say vinaka (thank you). No visit to Fiji is complete without taking part in at least one kava ceremony! As prolific as kava, the popular dish, kokoda, is a taste sensation not to be missed – raw fish marinated in lime juice and coconut milk. A lovo is also a Fijian essential, a feast wrapped in banana leaves and cooked in the ground on hot stones.

Yasawa Islands

Soaring above the Pacific Ocean waves like emerald teeth, with nothing else around to interrupt the glistening turquoise horizon, the Yasawa Islands look like a collection of lost worlds. This lush, rugged archipelago is so remote it was left undiscovered until British navigator Captain William Bligh stumbled across it in May 1789 following the legendary mutiny on the Bounty, becoming the first European to sight them. Until the 1980s, visitors to the Yasawa Islands were mostly limited to cruise ships, but today these captivating islands are a highlight on a holiday to Fiji.

This limit on tourism has helped preserve an age-old Fijian culture that is steeped in history and legend, a place where traditions are cherished and the way of life remains as it did centuries ago. Small fishing villages with limited infrastructure and bures made with local materials and thatched roofs are dotted throughout the islands, where friendly locals proudly greet visitors with a traditional meke dance. You will also be encouraged to join in a kava ceremony, an integral part of Fijian culture. Traditionally used to unite families and strengthen connections to ancestors, the ceremony involves sharing a bowl of kava, a beverage made from the roots of a pepper plant and unofficially Fiji’s national drink.

The Yasawa archipelago’s pristine natural surroundings are another legacy of its isolation. Elegant, majestic and graceful, manta rays are fascinating giants who glide through warm waters around the world. Their wing span can reach up to 7 metres, and they can live up to 50 years. Despite their size, they are harmless to humans as they do not have a sting in their tail, and they are filterfeeders so their diet is primarily plankton and the occasional fish and small crustacean. The abundance of plankton in the waters just north of Paradise Cove Resort makes this prime manta ray territory from May to October each year, and your chance to swim with them is just a 10-minute boat ride from the resort! This is sure to be a highlight of your stay in the beautiful Yasawa Islands!

Day 5 ● Nanuya Lailai & Blue Lagoon

Sail past incredibly scenic islands towards the Blue Lagoon, made famous in the movie of the same name. Spend the day at Blue Lagoon Cruise’s very own beach on Nanuya Lailai, where the crew tie the boat to a palm tree!

Day 6 ● Yasawa Island

If you’re feeling active, join the guided walk across the island to the other side for incredible views and explore the fascinating caves at Sawa-i-Lau before a traditional evening feast in a local village.

Day 7 ● Drawaqa Island

With astonishing marine life and coral, getting into the water around Drawaqa Island for a spot of snorkelling is a must, and from May to October you’ll have the chance to spot manta rays!

iji’s emerald isles lend themselves to island hopping… it’s easy to get around, and travelling between regions and resorts is all part of the fun! Be it by speedboat, seaplane or helicopter, getting from A to B only adds to your holiday’s highlights. Closest to Nadi, Fiji’s international gateway, the Mamanuca Islands are the easiest islands to access and you can be stepping onto the shores of your chosen island paradise less than a couple of hours after landing! The Yasawas are a little further away, in both distance and development, so combining both island groups gives you a real flavour of Fiji’s varied and outstanding natural beauty, as well as an insight into each region’s history and culture.

Mamanuca Islands

Arrive into Nadi, usually early morning if you are travelling from Los Angeles or San Francisco, and either jump onto a connecting seaplane or helicopter, or travel the short distance by private car to Denarau Marina for an exhilarating speedboat ride to your island escape! Whilst you may not be able to check-in to your bure (villa) until early afternoon, you are welcome to start using the facilities and settling into your tropical hideaway straight away! The Mamanuca Islands are superb for snorkelling, surfing, diving, visiting local villages, exploring Monuriki, sampling the wood-fired pizzas and DJ tunes on floating platform, Cloud 9, or simply lazing by the pool and sipping cocktails beneath a palm tree. Yasawa Islands

The Yasawa Islands are the perfect contrast to the livelier atmosphere in the Mamanuca Islands. Amesmeric mix of virgin rainforest, spectacularly vibrant coral reefs and genuine local warmth, the islands in northern Fiji feel like an undiscovered world. The country’s second and third largest islands, Vanua Levu and Taveuni respectively, are just over an hour’s flight from Nadi, yet the short journey transports you to another time, to a place relatively untouched by tourism, where traditions are vehemently upheld. This region is a haven for adventurers, divers and those wanting to get off the beaten track. Vanua Levu’s main town, Savusavu, sits alongside the exotically named Hibiscus Highway, with a handful of retreats nearby, including the renowned Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort and the seven-villa boutique hideaway, Savasi Island.

Taveuni is billed as the ‘Garden Island’ – and with good reason. Refreshing waterfalls seep from its rugged interior, pearl-white beaches are shaded by coconut palms and lush vegetation is abundant. This is the Fiji you see on postcards, and it doesn’t disappoint. A large portion of Taveuni is protected by the Bouma National Heritage Park, where thick rainforest is threaded with hiking trails which offer prime spotting opportunities for over a hundred bird species found here, including kula lorikeets, silktails and, unique to this region, orange doves. One of the highlights in this wilderness are the Bouma Waterfalls (also known as the Tavoro Falls) on Taveuni’s eastern edge, a trio of cooling cascades whose plunge pools are perfect for floating in. For thrill-seekers, head to the island’s western wing for a burst of adrenaline at Waitavala Water Slide.

Despite Taveuni’s lush landscapes being truly extraordinary, some of its best scenery is found below the waves. Lying just off its coast, Somosomo Strait is home to some of the planet’s great dive sites, deservedly earning its epithet, the ‘soft coral capital of the world’. Strong tidal currents bring rich nutrients, perfect for coral growth and a healthy eco-system.

Back on land, sleepy rainforest villages and hamlets pock Taveuni’s emerald setting, each sound-tracked by cries of ‘bula!’ from locals eager to welcome you into their communities, while the satellite island of Matangi offers an authentic Fijian escape to get away from it all. Divers from around the world are enthralled by the world-renowned dive sites situated between Taveuni and Vanua Levu in the Somosomo Strait. Rainbow Reef is consistently ranked in the world’s top dive sites, and the Great White Wall is particularly spectacular. The warm tropical water is teeming with colourful corals, giant clams and over 1500 species of fish. This is truly a diver’s paradise!

Bouma – or Tavoro – Waterfalls

Bouma National Heritage Park protects over two thirds of Taveuni’s coastal forest and Fijian jungle, and is home to the iconic Tavoro (Bouma) Falls. A series of three waterfalls, the first is a short walk from the park’s visitor centre. If time and fitness permit, we highly recommend breaking a sweat and heading straight up to the top waterfall, a 45-minute hike away. With astonishing viewpoints along the path, it’s worth the extra effort! Have a swim, then work your way back down and visit the other two falls and take a dip in their tantalising freshwater pools.

Lavena Coastal Walk

Meandering along beaches, through forests and villages, past streams and waterfalls, the Lavena Coastal walk is a scenic pathway that is often used by locals taking their taro and coconuts to market. With no roads nearby, this is an off the beaten track adventure, one with breathtaking scenery and an abundance of native birds.

Waitavala Natural Waterslide

A short walk through the forest from Waiyevo, this natural waterslide is great fun, but not for the fainthearted! Watch the local kids as they slide through the cascading water over the smooth rocks and splash into the natural pool at the bottom, then have a go yourself!

You can reach Likuliku by boat, seaplane or helicopter. Your home for the next 5 nights will be an idyllic Overwater Bure suspended over the crystal-clear lagoon. Enjoy lazy days swimming straight from your private deck, relaxing on the beach, snorkelling and kayaking in the lagoon and indulging in soothing treatments at Tatadra Spa. End each day with a cocktail at Masima Bar as the sun sets over the shimmering lagoon.

Days 1-5 ● Paradise Cove Resort, Yasawa Islands From Nadi’s international terminal, it’s a short walk next door to the domestic terminal where you’ll board your seaplane and head north over the Mamanuca Islands to the far-flung Yasawas. As you land on the aquamarine sea in front of Paradise Cove Resort (see page 19), the smiling team will greet you with a welcome song on the beach before handing you a refreshing drink by the pool… welcome to paradise! Days 6-10 ● Nanuku Auberge Resort, Pacific Harbour Travel back to Nadi’s domestic terminal by seaplane and connect with a scenic 20-minute flight to Nanuku’s private airstrip in Pacific Harbour. If you’d prefer to enjoy the scenery along the Coral Coast, a private car transfer takes around 2 hours from Nadi. Nestled along a palm-lined beach overlooking Beqa Lagoon, Nanuku Auberge (see page 32) is the ideal choice for active families looking for adventure in paradise. Viti Levu & Outer Islands

The largest of Fiji’s 333 islands, Viti Levu is home to the country’s capital, Suva, on the east coast and the international gateway, Nadi, on the west. The majority of Fiji’s population, around 70%, live on this main island, the interior dominated by Mt. Tomanivi, an extinct volcano, and the surrounding landscape an undulating mix of lush forest, river valleys and remote villages. A sealed road snakes its way around the entire coast of Viti Levu, dubbed Queens Road in the south and Kings Road in the north, and a network of tracks and unpaved roads meander through the highlands.

Nadi and Denarau Marina are the launch pads to discovering Fiji’s many islands, by boat, helicopter and seaplane. Not far from the airport, the Fiji Orchid –once the home of actor Raymond Burr – is a delightful sanctuary with just six tented bures, ideal for a stopover. Just a few miles from Nadi, the Garden of the Sleeping Giant is ablaze with colourful orchids, lily ponds and landscaped gardens at the foothills of the impressive Nausori Highlands, and further inland, Koroyanitu National Heritage Park is peppered with walking tracks, waterfalls and archaeological sites. Teeming with sugarcane fields, Viti Levu’s western and northern coasts are the heart of the country’s sugar industry, centred around Lautoka, Fiji’s second largest city. Known as the Suncoast, this region is also an off-the-beaten track diving haven with a collection of charming boutique hideaways around Rakiraki.

As the South Pacific’s largest city, Suva is a melting pot of Fiji’s diverse multi-cultural community, with an impressive mix of modern and colonial architecture. A private tour explores the Sacred Heart cathedral, the Fiji Museum, vibrant Suva Municipal Market, with its vast array of tropical produce, and delves into the sweet scents of the Pure Fiji factory with its pampering range of cosmetics favoured by resorts throughout Fiji. Suva is also home to the national rugby team, winners

of the rugby sevens gold at the 2016 Olympics. Rugby is more than a sport in Fiji, it’s a way of life, and Fijians follow every match avidly, bestowing adulation on the players.

On the south coast, Fiji’s adventure capital, Pacific Harbour, is known for its thrilling assortment of activities (see page 33) and proximity to beautiful Beqa Island, birthplace of Fiji’s fire walking tradition. Along the Coral Coast, beyond the cluster of beachside resorts, Sigatoka Valley is regarded as the ‘Salad Bowl’ of Fiji, with over 70% of Fiji’s fresh produce growing in its fertile soil. The unspoiled, outlying Kadavu archipelago is blessed with the impressive Great Astrolabe Reef (see page 35) whilst the remote Lau group of islands, way out to the east, reveal a wilder side of Fiji, visited by only the most intrepid travellers. Sigatoka River Safari

Beginning its 75-mile journey in the mountainous heart of Viti Levu, the Sigatoka River meanders through a lush, green valley towards the Coral Coast, its banks dotted with remote villages. This unique half-day jet-boat safari travels through verdant scenery to a traditional village where you’ll be welcomed with a kava ceremony, meet the locals and hear about the valley’s fascinating history and legends. The ride back to Sigatoka Town includes some exhilarating 360° spins! Sigatoka is also known for its giant, undulating dunes at the Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park, a unique ecosystem close to the river’s mouth.

Off-Road Cave Safari

Take the road less travelled and explore Viti Levu’s interior in a custom-built All Terrain Vehicle departing from Sigatoka Town. This immersive half-day tour travels through rich jungle and across the mighty Sigatoka River to Fiji’s largest cave system, the ancient Naihehe Cave. The Upper Navua River flows between dramatic volcanic walls swathed in velvety rainforest and cascading waterfalls. Shark Dive

Days 1-4 ● Tokoriki Island Resort, Mamanuca Islands

Arrive into Nadi and connect onto a seaplane or helicopter for the short but oh-so-scenic flight high above the Mamanuca Islands to the utterly romantic island of Tokoriki (see page 13). You’ll be greeted by the sweet singing of the charmingly friendly team before being whisked to your beachside bure for 4 heavenly nights. It’s all about the turquoise sea here, so your days will pass by in a contented haze of swimming, snorkelling, diving and beach picnics. As the wonderful staff sing the Isa Lei to you before your departure to Nadi, chances are you’ll feel the tears well in your eyes as you bid farewell.

Days 5-8 ● Taveuni Palms Resort, Taveuni

By now, we’re sure you’ll be well and truly wrapped up in island time, energised from your blissful days in the Mamanuca Islands and ready for your next adventure! After your short journey back to Nadi, it’s just an easy 90-minute hop to Taveuni in Fiji’s remote north. You’ll instantly see why this is known as the ‘Garden Island’ as the colourful plants and lush green surroundings are revealed when the aircraft doors open. Just moments from Taveuni’s charmingly simple airport, Taveuni Palms Resort (see page 26) is your private oasis for the next 4 nights. Days 9-12 ● Royal Davui Island Resort, Beqa Lagoon

From Taveuni, fly back to the mainland and take a light aircraft flight to Pacific Harbour, followed by a short boat ride across Beqa Lagoon to Royal Davui (see page 34) for 4 nights of glorious island living. As you soak up the views from your vale’s plunge pool and deck, you may find it hard to leave your private sanctuary! But be sure to enjoy unforgettable time together on the resort’s sand cay and, if your inner adventurer calls, try out one of the exhilarating Pacific Harbour activities nearby.

Know Before You Go

Getting to Fiji

Fiji Airways is the country’s national airline, operating regular flights from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Hong Kong, Singapore and Tokyo, as well as Australia and New Zealand, to Fiji’s gateway airport, Nadi. The journey time is approximately 25 hours from the UK. Ask your consultant about upgrading to Premium Economy or Business Class, and consider a stopover enroute to break the journey.

Time Zone

GMT+12 hours (except November to February when Fiji moves into daylight saving: GMT+13 hours).

Weather

Fiji enjoys a tropical climate year-round. May to November tend to be the drier, milder months. December to April, Fiji’s lush season, generally brings more rainfall and higher humidity.

Language

English is the official language, with Fijian and Hindustani widely spoken.

Passport, Visa & Health

British citizens require a full 10-year passport with at least 6 months validity remaining following your departure from Fiji. If you are not a British citizen or do not hold a British passport, please check passport and visa requirements with the Embassy. No visa required for British passport holders staying less than 4 months, but you must have an

onward or return ticket. Fiji is free from malaria, yellow fever and major tropical diseases. No vaccinations are required, except if you are travelling from an infected area.

Currency

The Fijian Dollar (FJD) is the local currency. Make use of the ATM machine when you arrive at Nadi airport as it’s a good idea to keep a little local currency handy. Hotel bills can be settled using a credit card.

Tipping

Tipping is not customary in Fijian culture and is generally not expected. However, tipping is welcomed for exemplary service.

Luggage Allowance on Seaplanes, Helicopters & Light Aircraft

Seaplanes and light aircraft generally allow up to 20kg luggage per adult passenger, whilst helicopters allow 15kg. Please do pack accordingly to avoid paying excess baggage fees at check-in, as your international allowance will not be permitted on small aircraft.

Electricity

The voltage is 240 volts and you will mostly find three-pin power outlets, identical to those found in Australia and New Zealand.

Respecting Fijian Culture

It is important to dress modestly when you are outside your resort, particularly

when visiting a Fijian village. This is a highlight not to be missed, but please respect the Fijian culture and keep shoulders and knees covered. It is customary to present a gift of yaqona (kava) to the village chief. Please avoid wearing a hat when you visit a traditional village as it is considered disrespectful to the village chief. Please also bear in mind that it is an insult in Fijian culture to touch a person’s head, and it is polite to remove your shoes when you are a guest in someone’s house.

What to pack

Light clothing suitable for the warm, tropical climate is recommended. For the evenings, casual trousers and shirts are recommended for men and summer dresses are appropriate for women, with a light jumper for cooler evenings. Sunhats, sunglasses, sun cream and mosquito repellent are essential. The island locations are remote, so take necessities with you. We also highly recommend taking reef shoes with you to avoid injury to bare feet from coral, shells, rocks and fish.
