TOMOKI KANEKO SAMPLE WORKS 2019
Hi, I’m Tomoki I’m a second year student at the University of Waterloo. I enjoy design because of the creative and broad range of ways an idea can be tackled. I try to think on my feet and with my hands, while seeking ways to add layers of knowledge, skills and experiences. I look forward to speaking to you soon.

THE SHED TORONTO, ON
Public library 1B Studio Supervised by Donald Mackay April 2018 This project began with a fascination for stockyards and industry which used to be prominent in the area and the massive structures and machinery which made it possible. The structural elements create spacial opportunities for this post industrial public space for fostering creativity of multiple generations.

The project focused on structure as a concept from early on. The various connections are expressed as a design language. It became an opportunity for further investigation, and as details that help communicate the intent of the project.

NAVIGATING CINEMATIC AFFECT HETEROTOPIA
2A Studio Supervisor Derrick Revington November 2018 We explored the possibility of the storytelling capabilities of film to inspire architectural thinking that evokes more powerful emotions and greater meaning in the spaces we occupy. Short film clips of movies were investigated and distilled into the elements that composed them and then synthesized to concieve a radical “City of Today, Tomorrow. In Collaboration with: Chris Qiu, Danielle Grabke, Nicole Chen, Riling Chen

Dreams, Kurowasa (1990)
Orlando, Porter (1992)
The order that gives meaning to our everyday lives and keeps society in tact, can be the same order that drives people to rebel or disobey, and create disorder. Nuit Blanche is a worldwide example where artists express the inexplicable emotions that no reason or order could ever justify and challenges to reconcieve out understanding of the everyday city. The final model was a 60x60x90cm hanging exhibition for the “City of Today, Tomorrow, hung with 12 other heterotopic cities.

HETEROTOPIA
2A Studio Supervisor Derrick Revington Dec 2018 In order to experiment with the way we understand spaces, we started with a montage of images derived from ďŹ lm clips and attempted to produce a space that captures the atmospheric elements of the montage. My montage focused on relations between compression and expansion, subspaces and main spaces, and layers of transparency.

CAMBRIDGE, ON 1A Studio Supervisor Rick Andreghetti Dec 2017 This student residence considers the private and shared spaces in a way that is largely defined by this narrow lot. As a result the programs are organized vertically and the form is like a shell over the spaces including a central circulation stair.

GOULD EVANS Four month co-op Jan 2019 I created this 1:200 model of an office building that is almost in construction. Beforehand, I created test models of key moments, using various materials.Every piece including the windows were hand cut with the exception of the siding panels visible on the bottom left photo being laser cut. I was able to stand in the position of being a designer, assisting an architect where it is my job to interpret design intetions of others, and use my creative liberty to express those concepts through design decisions in the model.
