HOW THE SYSTEM WORKS The design for Banham Zoo’s new wayfinding system is based on a simple, and easy to follow colour-coding system, which groups animal species into distinct zones or ‘territories’. There are five of these territories built into the new map and signage system of this zoo. These are: Red: Carnivourous mammals Green: Primates Blue: Birds Yellow: Hoofstock, and Farm animals Purple: Reptiles and Invertebrates The is also a colour coded system for
locating visitor facilities, such as toilets and restaurants. Visitors are not guided around a set route as soon as the enter the zoo. This is because different visitors will want to see different animals first, and so setting them on a designated route around the entire zoo would not allow them to freely explore their own interests. For the new wayfinding system visitors are presented with six colour-coded maps at the zoo entrance, and can freely choose which animal group they would personally
most like to see first. They can then explore that territory freely. The entrance is the only place (except the handheld site map) where all six maps are presented together.

THE MAP The design of the site map has been greatly simplilied from the original in order to improve ease of use. It is contructed where possible of simple geometric shapes, and allows the user to decide which animal group they they would like to visit (for example primates or birds). The visitor map is A3 in size when unfolded, and contains all six of the separate colour-coded territory maps.

S I G N AG E The signage for Banham Zoo will take the form of curved monoliths. The visual identity of the company is maintained across all signage through the use of their logo, and by typeface choice. The monoliths have been designed to be easily read by both able and disabled users. The height of the monoliths is great enough for them to be easily located, whilst the width is slim enough to be visually unobtrusive so as not to block views of paths, animal enclosures or other areas of interest.

S I G N S P E C I F I C AT I O N S 2.1 Metres height The monolith signs for Banham Zoo will be constructed from 3mm thick aluminium, and standard RAL colour will be used for the graphics. Signs will have an internal mild steel support structure and extended posts for fitting. The aluminium panels which clad the internal steel support structure are powder-coated, which gives a very durable and long lasting coating. This also provides protection
against UV light, and adverse weather conditions. Monoliths to have two legs concreted into the ground to a suitable depth.

S I G N AG E T Y P E There are four separate designs for mounting the monoliths, and which one is chosen is dependant on the junction the sign will be positioned on. 1-sided signs are used only at the zoo entrance and for information signage outside animal enclosures. 2-sided signs are most commonly used around the site. However, in the case of junctions that split off into three or more different routes, 3-sided and in rare cases 4-sided signs will be needed.

TYPOGRAPHY Choice of typeface for the signage of the zoo has remained the same, as this was not an issue with the previous signage design. Lithos Black is used for the main signage headlines at 210pt, and along with the eye logo forms the brand identity of Banham Zoo. Gill Sans is used for text setting and secondary information at 35pt, and at 70pt for text headings.

I N F O R M AT I O N A L S I G N A G E The zoo’s information signage about the various animals is applied in the same style of signage as the wayfinding system. Room for photographs of the animals has been considered, and enough space is provided to accomodate a word count of up to 240 words, plus some fun facts. Informational signage such as this is to be used at the main entrance to animal enclosures only.
