COMPETITION

DESCRIPTION

TEAM

The design competition aims for the architectural and functional redevelopment of the “Parco del Foro Italico” area. The objective of this international competition is to obtain a design proposal for completing the current stadium, enhancing and redeveloping the external facades, and constructing a mobile roofing system. This system will make the facility multipurpose, allowing for both indoor and outdoor configurations, and enabling it to host a wider range of events, such as concerts, in addition to its current use.

PROGRAM Hospital

LOCATION Ragusa, Italy

DESCRIPTION

The expansion of the “Giovanni Paolo II” Hospital in Ragusa extends the existing structure southward, forming a “C”-shaped layout with a central courtyard connecting the old and new buildings. A service tower in the courtyard provides vertical connections and links to the hospital’s wings via elevated walkways. The ground floor of the new wing, fully glazed and open to the south, connects the courtyard to an urban park and parking area. The design incorporates wooden facades for a wave-like effect and a therapeutic rooftop garden, promoting interaction between the hospital and its surroundings.

Tomurcuk Nar, Maria Martinez

DESCRIPTION

The mixed-use tower will house a variety of programmatic elements, including commercial and retail spaces, offices, and apartments. The facade features wooden brise-soleil that filter solar gain, while its layered design reduces the need for air conditioning. The abundant natural light flowing through the building nearly eliminates the need for artificial lighting.

The ground floor will feature commercial spaces, including pop-up stores and shops, while the upper levels will be dedicated to coworking spaces and residential units. The seventeenth floor will include a gym, swimming pool, and spa. The thirty-seventh floor will offer landscaped terraces for outdoor activities, along with a restaurant.

BEIC Biblioteca Europea di Informazione e Cultura

PROGRAM Library

LOCATION Milano, Italy

TEAM Maria Martinez, Tomurcuk Nar

DESCRIPTION

For 20 years, Milan has aimed to establish the BEIC (Biblioteca Europea di Informazione e Cultura). The BEIC will serve as a key element in revitalizing a long-abandoned and disused area in the Porta Vittoria district. At the library entrance, a “Promenade” will lead to a spacious, light-filled room with a rectangular layout, featuring exhibition and commercial spaces, a cafeteria, and an auditorium. From ground level, the virtual library will be accessible for consultation, study, and reading.

The building consists of four floors and one underground level. At the center, a glazed space will house a large, fully robotic book deposit designed to accommodate 2.5 million volumes. This area will also include the Imaginarium, a section dedicated to children and their families.

The exterior elements of the library abstractly represent an open book. The window niches create study and reading tables for visitors, offering panoramic views.

IVREA

PROGRAM

Reuse of an old Industrial Building as a Hospital

LOCATION Ivrea, Italy

TEAM

Nar, Maria Martinez

DESCRIPTION

The project focuses on transforming the Olivetti district into the new headquarters for Ivrea Hospital. The study presented today examines the potential refunctionalization of the former Olivetti industrial area on Via Jervis in Ivrea, a site of historical and architectural significance. In 2018, this area led to Ivrea being recognized by UNESCO as an “industrial city of the twentieth century” and added to the World Heritage List.

The new hospital will efficiently meet the area’s evolving healthcare and social needs. The intervention includes a new building, along with a lower-level piazza featuring shops and a cafeteria.

Livorno, Italy

Tomurcuk Nar, Maria Martinez

DESCRIPTION

The project breathes new life into Livorno’s former Pirelli area through its urban reconversion, which will become the Citadel of Health. It includes the construction of a new building to house the hospital, the restoration of the historical facade of the “former Pirelli” buildings, which are of cultural significance, and their integration into the health facility. The project also involves the renovation and expansion of existing pavilions, as well as the extension of Pertini Park to reconnect with the Via Antonio Gramsci road axis.

DESCRIPTION

The main goal of this project is to control and use natural sources in an efficient way against food and energy crises. Via rainwater harvesting and the use of solar, and related to the carbon cycle, the energy needs of buildings would be supplied. Given these characteristics, in addition, to contributing ecologically to the region, it seeks to have an economic return. Space can continually benefit and turn as users generate value. Besides construction areas, agricultural fields were created for experimental food production. The project area has been supported by economic and ecological systems, it can protect its own ecosystem for a long time without requiring too much maintenance.

The project area was an abandoned concrete area before being used for a car park. This area is 350 m away from Susa train station and very close to the city center. In the master plan, the buildings are positioned perpendicular to the river. The passages from the city to the river leave open. By descending below the road level with stairs, the down part is more private and quiet. Upper and lower squares connected to the river were created in the garden. The agricultural areas and warehouse are accessible through the bridge.

Warehouses control agricultural areas and provide the necessary tools for growing plants. Another problem of the project area was the lack of continuity along the river. Besides project site offer an open development area across the river when we walk along the new bridge of the city. These agricultural fields give opportunities to cultivate visitors’ own products in the city center. Hobbyist farmers could find tools, produce their vegetables and sell in the farmers’ market of the Agro Food Lab complex.

The goal of the project is to interpret and coordinate the fractured and heterogeneous atmosphere. The design and typology of the project have been defined by the interpretation of several contemporary lifestyles and the significance of diversification. The complex is made up of three different houses, situated in the boundaries. Houses, situated in the boundaries. The residential scheme aligned with the current urban structure and landscape. It was built to ensure the green flow through the construction area. The open space is shaped like a courtyard opening up to the park in the city. The square host unique activities and events.

DESCRIPTION

RE-USE OF THE NATIONAL EXHIBITION PAVILIONS

Six months a year, The Venice Biennale exhibitions and activities in the Giardini become an attractor, a reason to travel to the lagoon city. A lot of people wandering through the pavilions of the Giardini bring a particular life and energy to Venice. This is in the Summer. In Winter, the Giardini completely hibernate behind an iron fence, apparently unapproachable, cut from the neighborhood and local context.

In this direction, a new element was planned for the Danish Pavilion in Giardini. The half-transparent vertical extension creates a new border for the garden. It is situated with other pavilions near completion. Curves are used as structural components to support from ground to top. This addition offers many rooms, surfaces, and sections to provide a new experience inside the existing building.
