INTRODUCTION We are Study Association Lucid of the Faculty of Industrial Design at Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands. This document has been set up to create an impression of our vision, ideas and plans for organising a TEDx conference during the upcoming Dutch Design Week. On the following pages you will find how this type of conference will find its way during the week where Eindhoven presents the future of design to the rest of the world. We will explain why we think it is important that such an event comes to the Dutch Design Week and how it will be of value for its visitors. Furthermore it will have a concrete plan of action concerning the different organizational aspects during the upcoming months.

Vision You can look at design and say ‘that’s pretty’. But that is not solely what design is about. The field of design is expanding its influences within the societal context, by means of intelligent products, systems and services. This implies that design is more than pure function and aesthetics. Therefore the common notion of design needs to be redefined. Students are learning and developing this new transformative [1] form of design at the faculty of Industrial Design at the Eindhoven University of Technology. Inspiration, strong opinions and passionate discussions are needed to shape and polish these ideas. That is why we are organizing a TEDx event for a different perspective by design.

Mission We aim to organize a single-day TEDx event during the Dutch Design Week where we give thought leaders in the field a podium and invite the brainport community to come and discuss their ideas. Our goal is to stimulate students, academics and professionals in the design field to come together and inspire each other.
TEDx The TEDx Program is created by the TED organization to help communities, organizations and individuals to spark conversation and connection through local TED-like experiences.
DDW The DDW is an annual week where design students, design professionals, design schools, companies come together to showcase their creative output in the form of exhibitions throughout the city of Eindhoven.

Speakers and Program Themes The goal is to curate the speaker line-up according to a set of themes with the aim of broadening the perspective on design. The following themes will be covered in the line-up:
14
Intelligence
Society
Step by step computers are becoming more aware of us and our environment, supporting our intelligence and aiming to make us smarter. Are computers taking over?
Society is transforming from an industrial economy towards new types of sharing. What is the role of citizens and communities?
Interaction
Business
Through digital technologies, new interactions between people, systems and society occur. We are more connected, but are we more social?
Businesses are at the core of spreading products and value through the world, changing lives through pragmatism. But how can they innovate in a visionary form?
Academic advisory board To form a qualitative set of speakers a selection committee of academic staff from the faculty of Industrial Design at Eindhoven University of Technology will be formed. This academic advisory board is valuable to guarantee a critical opinion on the quality of the program and to provide connections to potential speakers.
List of speakers A list of speakers will be compiled in a separate document.
15
Venue and Spaces One of the essential components of a great TEDx event is the atmosphere of the location.
Venue criteria Central spot in the community Great facilities for speakers and audience An ambience for sharing ideas
16
The following locations in Eindhoven fit our criteria:
Klokgebouw Central location at the DDW
Muziekgebouw
Great facilities, services and atmosphere
Natlab
Historic location and an intimate auditorium
17
Audience and Experience We organize this TEDx event for the community of designers, engineers and scientists. Within this community we aim for a mix of students and professionals. This community will be present during the Dutch Design Week 2015 to discover and exchange the latest ideas on design and technology by visiting exhibition at various locations throughout Eindhoven.
Reaching the community The community will be reached through different existing channels and networks such as TU/e study associations, alumni associations, social media and existing communities through the platform of the Dutch Design Week. 18

Volunteers and Staff As a committee of the study association Lucid we can rely on our members as volunteers to support the organization of this event. Our members have a wide range of skills useful for the organization of a TEDx event such as stage design and decoration of the venue, graphic design, photography and video.
20
Video and Photography Many of our students are passionate about great photography and video. With their professional skills the documentation will be in the hands of a great team of engaged volunteers. For example a similar event organized by the same study association during the DDW was a ‘Dutch Design Week Draait Door’ event. You can review the episode at vimeo: https://vimeo.com/31111526

Sponsors and Finance TEDx sponsoring is different than the traditional sponsorship. We are looking for sponsors that match with our event. We want to be in a collaborative relationship with our sponsors. Finances to support this event will come from a mix of funds and partnerships. Funds There are a variety of funds available at the university to support students, academic development activities. Partnerships Partnership packages will be created for companies to get engaged.
