WELCOME TO TONGUE TIRED

Yes, you read that right. Tongue Tired is a community-based organisation which covers local events, creative arts, and politics.

Bridlington is a community town, but the community is often too busy to make itself known to the audience that it deserves. Tongue Tired are here to put faces to names, and gives names to the right faces.

This is the first issue, a project that has long been discussed over coffee and beer, between a circle of ever-changing faces whose involvement has forever shaped the project. It will be covering the music scene and its backstage, as well as giving a glance to other important areas in the creative arts.

Seaside Underground

The Seaside Underground

are an informal group of local artists and musicians whose main aim is to encourage and support local live music, and up-and-coming artists.

Starting at the Corner Bar as an excuse to play live music each week during the summer of 2019, Sproose Moose, and brother Ian ‘Screamo’ Hayward, met with fellow musicians Jonson

‘Hans Umlaut’ Walker, and Alex Verda of Metalines Studios

Sproose & Jonson started working together, and after playing a gig together supporting Misfortune Cookie & Bear Away at Indigo Alley in Scarborough for their Wayne of Disillusioned

Records they formed the duo ‘The Steamin Hamz’. After a Christmas show with The Bleedin’ Obvious, the duo were inspired to form their own music nights.

The first lot of sessions took place at Telegraph under the name Canned! with the entry fee being a can donation for food banks. Six months of gigs were lined up starting march 2020. After an appearance on BBC Introducing with Alan Raw, and playing a single show alongside Arizona Tides, and Wild Academy, the event was canned by the pandemic.

Come Summer of 2021 when lockdown began to ease, Sproose was offered the chance to host The Sunday Sessions at The Queens. While originally temporary, Sproose jumped at the chance to work once again with Alex Verda, and eventually began hosting the show full-time.

Shortly thereafter, Sproose and Jonson put together The Seaside Underground’s first gig at the Bull and Sun, featuring legendary Hull act Black Kes alongside the full debut of Hans Umlaut.

Throughout 2022 The Seaside Underground continued to grow, whilst Jonson focused on Hans Umlaut, and recently, a Scarborough show ‘Trusted Sauce’ to feature budding hip-hop artists.

Open Mic Night

An opportunity to get up and get involved with the music scene, the Bridlington Open Mics offer fantastic opportunities to interact with local musicians and even play with them. The sessions are headed by Sproose Moose who carries a professional yet inviting charm. Sproose has stated that these events are welcoming of all ages, so long as under 18s are accompanied by adults, as the open mics take place in pubs. They encourage people to come and play, or even just enjoy the music offered.

images of the acts as they play.

Sproose Moose has offered this regarding the open mics: This year’s plan is to keep growing the community. We welcome and support everyone from first-time performers to professional artists, and have a backline featuring an array of amps and house instruments for anyone to use.

Sound is handled by Bridlington-based music production studio Metalines Studios, with Alex Verda not only managing the sound desk, but also working alongside Poppy Corrigan to capture promotional footage and

COMMUNITY ART – YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS

The open mic nights welcome more than just musicians to the stage. Oli Preston has wowed audiences with every appearance where he not only sings and strums his guitar, but also recites his powerful poetry. A combination of humour and happiness, his poetry is a fantastic construction of his experiences. Whether small or big, they are all personal and full of heart.

Oli has submitted a poem from 2022.

What joy there is to live with open hands!

To hold lightly both blessings and troubles.

Peace is here for the taking, or rather Peace is here to be found through letting go.

Choosing to put aside the need to know

Release control, security found in order

Space for chaos, where creativity dances

Peace with fluttering butterfly wings.

How

tempting it is to tightly grasp

To hold on with anxious white knuckles. But breath held does not bring lifeLet the breath go or choke!

Life needs trust.

To breathe deeply and freely. The Spirit, who blows where She will, beckons: Let go, and let arms become wings.

Spotlight Theatre

Spotlight Theatre is one of Bridlington’s brilliant hidden gems. Tucked away on West Street, (No. 55, YO153DZ) it is run entirely by volunteer actors, musicians, technicians, front of house staff, and back of house staff.

The theatre routinely puts on a spectacle of shows, from the tense drama and comedy of ‘The Woman Who Cooked Her Husband’ to the exciting exploration of music through the times with “Bringing on Back the Good Times”. Pantomimes are a frequent feature of the stage, and its assortment of talented workers invigorates every performance that takes the stage.

For those interested, Spotlight welcomes performers of any age. Its constant rotation of plays, musicals, and pantomimes provides opportunity on all fronts at all times.

Meet the Artist: Beth Pilling

The solo artist who’s played at more than 30 different venues all across East Yorkshire. Not only has Beth released a selfmade EP ‘Apple Pie’ in her time away from home, but she is working to release her album, which switches focus from a purely solo project to a collaboration of instruments and talent.

Beth Pilling

For influence, Beth has named four artists: Alex Turner, Amy Whinehouse, Florence and the Machines, and Nirvana. The influence of these is definitely felt throughout her songs, with ‘Lion’ being a standout example.

During times of struggle Beth cited Nirvana as the place to look to for inspiration when things don’t seem to make sense. She enjoys the ambiguity that comes with the lyrics behind Nirvana’s music, and even said that if their lyrics work, then hers will.

‘Spinning’ is a track Beth cited as following this influence, having a catchy, upbeat sound but accompanied by lyrics that have a darker meaning to them. She enjoys that her relationship with the song doesn’t match that of the audience’s, as it makes the piece more personal to everyone listening.

From writing songs on the piano, to mixing tracks in Garage Band, and finally settling on her guitar and voice, Beth has made quite the adventure for a musician in such a short span of time.

Contemporary Arts Gallery

“Bridlington Contemporary is a professionally run gallery, by artists for artists. Helping launch the careers of emerging new talent, whilst also showcasing established national and international artists.

We promote and help develop art, providing an opportunity for both solo exhibitions and collaborative events, for those artists who would perhaps not have an opportunity to exhibit in a commercial gallery. We have facilities to show traditional, mixed media, digital, 3Dimensional, and performance art, as well as providing a venue for staging intimate theatrical performance and musical events.

We also provide a dedicated workshop/studio space, offering a range of craft and fine art workshops for small groups.

For opening hours and a program of events please visit our website or social media accounts.” – Rebecca Folds
