The thesis investigates the potential of inserting new productive ecology within the vast Mongolian landscape at the edge condition where nature and humanity intermingle. The architecture is conceived as a productive infrastructure to reactivate the existing ground into an operative landscape. It serves as an anchor, distributed across the steppe zone, functioning as a manufacturing centre for cashmere production, as a winter shelter during extreme cold and as a tourist camp during summer. The sustainable infrastructure system is designed to collect existing resources such as rain, and snow and solar radiation. The building responds to seasonal shifts; it closes during winter months and opens up during the summer. Programs also change according to nomadic rhythms of the goat herders. The project intervenes within the existing patterns of nomadic lifestyle and augments the livelihood through providing increased economic opportunities through the creation of a cashmere cooperative responsible for all stages of the production process including: collection, spinning, dyeing, weaving and garment assembly. It not only improves the current Mongolia's manufacturing service, it also reconnects with nomadic traditional livelihood by optimizing sufficient nutrition, mobility and people connection in adverse conditions.

The modernized grid gives the flexiblity which ease the productivity and efficiency . Its systematization guides nature such as water, light and solar source which leads the constructive expression in a natural way by employing the natural materials. Both the roof infrastructure and flexible facade allows the spatial permeations according to the seasonal change which provides flexiblity for the programs attach to it. Summer season, the space can be created for industrial use when more materials are ready at that period, tourism are booming at the same time which creates a system for production and consumption. Rainfall is heavy enough according to weather report to be able to support the consumption by the varied program. In winter, the space are functioned as winter shelters for the nomadic herders who has difficulty to travel to their winter camp up to the mountains. The water tank are mainly collecting the snow which can be heated up by the central industrial equipment. The water tank should be connected to greenhouse to support the agricultural production.

Final Model

Discursive position : Operative landscape

26

According to Alex Wall argued that ‘The terms of landscape refers to the functioning matrix of connective tissues that organizednot only objects and spaces bt also dynamics processes and events that move through them.’ And he further argued that the need for this shift because the ‘ natureof the city’ itself has become unprecedentedly formless dynamic and complex. He concluded that one reason landscape is especially useful is its emphasis on the plan and the horizontal as an ordering surface:’ all things come together on the ground’. Le corbusier’s plan as generator of order. Architecture’s vast self-appointment as model for rational thought of natural order. Architecture does not simply represent things but operates at the level of organization itself. Architecture is not represented as a picture or surface of order but served as a model of order. If the landscape of city changed, it will be offered as a replacement of order to allow new nature of the city replays through the new systems claimed by the task of architecture. The supposed shift of operational attempts recover landscape from its original pastoralsm, while leaving architecture and planning under assumptions. However, the proprosed intervention is a way to merge the architecture model with landscape surface, The architecture is not about assumption but with natural order as a second landscape to resurfacing the ground. The stratification of ground is designed for the protection of water resources. By introducing architecture to morphogenesis and nonlinear science, it wis central to the emergence of landscape design as a new way for architectural practice mentioned by Sanford Kwinter. The landscape is always under change, will architecture’s role matching the needs of change or the dynamism of urbanism? The city is always projected as continuing performance with layers of compexity and dynamism which are self-organizing. This might suggest that the plans are representational to render the ideas suggest by Stan Allen. The plan as diagram mobilizes the field of repetition and diferentiation to treat urban as a systematic environment with forces and processes. The new intervention is conceived as a kind of complex structure that facilitate the processors happen in the region. Considering the environment as open systems both in time and space like living organisms. Light, wind , solar and rain as different mediums that interacting with the architecture. With the support of technology, the new intervention allows the architecture with enough flexiblity to fit into the dynamism of landscape to turn the existing landscape into operative and machinic.

Research of pencil towers in HK:

New structure system

Structure system

New furniture types

Concept: Forest Living, lightness, transparency The design intent is to seek a new method to interpret the vertical structure system of pencil tower, which dissolves the heaviness and bulkiness of existing structure in current HK’s pencil tower and blurs the boundaries between structure components and interior space in order to bring out the quality of lightness and transparency in space. This design approach is to create a new system bridging over structure components, interior space and furniture design. Structural strategy: In this new system, the original structure components are separated into multiple thin steel rods located at the grid of 2X2 m to provide sufficient tension and compression for structure load as well as to meet the universal standard of minimum human space.

This new system integrates with the tower massing which is initiated from grid pushing inwardly (0~4m from 3 sides) which resuts the changes in volumes among east south west sides respectively. The overall GFA of each duplex unit increases according to the level goes up. Although the floor area is changing, the structural system remains its rigidity on each floor, which divide the entire building into 4 zones: cores, toilet and kitchen, living and dining, bedrooms with outdoor space. In order to achieve well balance between flexibility and rigidity of structural system, resulting free-forming space shaped by pinched columns controlled by 4 points blurs its edges between these 4 internal programs. Interior furniture conceived as modular capsuled units to be fixed onto this new structure system to create a floating effect which further enhances the lightness of different spatial components. (eg. Floating bed, hammock, floating bathtub, etc)

This new structure system with combination of furniture optimizes the use of building structure which reduce the extra structural components from furniture to bring out the quality of lightness and transparency, dissolving the heaviness and bulkiness of existing structure in current HK’s pencil tower and blurs the boundaries between structure components and interior space. The rationality of building system is intentionally challenging human sensibilities of elegance, beauty and comfort.
