All About Toni - ABOUT ME

They say good things come in small packages and I am no exception. Once you get to know me you will find out that I am a bubbly, chatty and positive individual. I work enthusiastically in everything I do, this is shown from my own initiative to start up a couple of my own ventures outside of my education and working life. Since starting university I have been blogging every part of my design work. I really enjoy sharing my thoughts and seeing just how much I have improved with my work over time. My blogging has become more frequent as time has gone on, to check it out just go to - tonipillingproductdesign.blog. UNIVERSITY PROJECTS - Persona

This was my Final Major Project. I spent 3 months researching during an exploration project to do with gender roles in toy design then 3 months creating my final product, Persona. Insight and Oppurtunity - PERSONA

Extensive research was carried out into gender roles in toy design, I looked at the science behind it, did some field research with a focus group of children and also some market and advertising research. From this I found that their was a problem within gender stereotype toys reinforcing self fulfilling prophecy so decided to tackle this issue through a fun medium.

PERSONA - Idea Generating + Testing

Over the 3 months I went through many iterations of ideas, I started with toys but moved quickly into board game design as I found that because these have a set of rules it was easier to project my gender views this way. The problem with toys is that children can iterpret them as anything. I went through a large amount of iterations before I reached my more refined idea, Persona.

Once I had my final idea I then carried on iterating this by testing the gameplay with friends and family, tweaking things till the mechanics was perfect.

Use against other players, brings in a competitive feature as they can change who’s in the lead quickly

To tackle the issue of self-fulfilling prophecy in gender stereotyped toys, Persona teaches children that every personality trait can have a benefit in life, therefore showing them that they can be whoever they want to be through a fun medium. The game also includes QR code spaces which are updated dependent on current events as I wanted to make sure that my board game had longevity and would be played on a regular basis as a common problem with board games is that they are only played every now and again.

An extension of the Persona Brand, each original character has 2 other versions connected from the game. These were created to increase the longevity of Persona even further and for children to collect just like collecting all the traits in the board game.

PERSONA - Validation

“The kids loved the game, they looked like they had fun playing it and I especially like the fun little characters. This game helps promote that any personality is positive which is definitely a benefit to me as a Mum trying to get my kids to be just be themselves.” (Sharon, Mum to Sophie and Jack)

Bedtime Buddy - UNIVERSITY PROJECTS

This brief was set by the Delight in Light competition, they are a movement encouraging excellence in design and a better understanding of the role lighting plays in our lives through a number of initiatives of which the design competition is one. This brief was very broad and let the candidates create any light they wanted as long as it was indoors.

BEDTIME BUDDY - Insight and Oppurtunity

The fear of darkness is the most common fear amongst children. At the age of 2/3 years old the fear of the dark hits home because they are old enough to imagine, but can’t distinguish between fantasy and reality. How can children become less afraid of the dark? Using their imaginarion and creativity to fight the fear of scary things lurking in the dark, under the bed and in the closet. Security objects can also make a child feel more relaxed at bedtime.

Idea Generation - BEDTIME BUDDY

After deciding I was going to create a nightlight that doubled up as a security object I brainstormed different ways of creating a customisable light which would put the childrens imagination and creativity to another use.

BEDTIME BUDDY - Model Making

The final product was creating by using vacuum forming, laser cutting and sanding down a base out of grey foam. I also created packaging by drawing up a net on illustrator, and adding on art work after.

Bedtime Buddy helps to use the child’s overactive imagination in a positive way by customising their own night light which also doubles as a security object.

4 Place “Buddy” into base at bedtime, this turns the light on and indicates to the child that its time for bed

5 The parent says goodnight and reassures child that their “Buddy” will keep them protected overnight

6 As the child sleeps the “Buddy” dims down over an hour to help ensure an undisturbed nights sleep

This timeline shows how the child would interact with the night light during the day and then what happens when they go to bed.

How It’s Made - BEDTIME BUDDY

“Buddy” would be made with a soft PVC plastic and blow moulded, similar to how ‘rubber ducks’ are made to create a soft touch and a friendly feeling for the child when customising the “Buddy”

Packaging made from E flute corrugated card, 1 sided printing and only 2 colours used to keep costs low

Turns on when connected to base

Base would be injection moulded ABS as this is lightweight and would not be hazardous towards a child

- LED lighting with cool running temperature - Low energy consumption - 4x0.65W LED module - 450 lumens - 2700 Kelvin for relaxing atmosphere - Power comes from plugging into the wall - Light dims over 1 hour once turned on - Complete with LED driver - 30,000 hours lifetime

Packaging also has an acetate window to give a preview of the lamp

This shows how the light would be manufactured and the materials it would be made from. This was a requirement for the Delight in Light competition.

UNIVERSITY PROJECTS - Waste Not Want Not Don’t waste, RE-USE!

#reusefood During my second year of university I entered the RSA competition. The brief I tried to answer was “Waste Not Want Not” which was all about how we can reduce food waste. My final idea was based around re-using food in unconventional ways.

Insight + Oppurtunity - WASTE NOT WANT NOT Insight & Opportunity: 2.8 MT of food is wasted due to being “unavoidable” or possibly avoidable. A lot of these types of food can actually be re-used for other purposes and most people are unaware of this.

The research I did showed that there is a lot of food that is wasted which could be re-used in other ways. The 6 ways of re-using above are the final ones that I tried out and focused on (the images are the final outcomes of my testing).

After I found out you could re-use food in different ways I brainstormed ideas, from campaigns, to books, magazines and beauty products teaching people about re-using foods in other ways.

Research Into Re-uses of Foods - WASTE NOT WANT NOT Further Research

“Possibly avoidable” and “Unavoidable” waste

“1.2 million tonnes (17% of the total) was considered ‘possibly avoidable’ (1.4 million tonnes in 20078). This includes things like bread crusts and potato peelings that some people eat but others do not. 1.6 million tonnes (23% of the total) was unavoidable waste (1.5 million tonnes in 2007). Five types of waste made up 60% of this (tea waste, banana skins, poultry bones, onion skins and orange peel).” - Waste & Resources Action Programme. (2013). This project was completed in second year. The point of it was to create a form from scratch that did not have any paticular use but had 2/3 parts which you would automatically know how to use without any instruction.

During my second year of university I went on work a 3 month work placement as a Graphic Design Intern at Visual Architects. They design props for festivals and club events. I was involved in designing a lot of posters, social media content, catalogues and interactive emails.

Along with graphics I also got to design some stage props for events such as Cirque du Soul and the festival Boomtown. These designs were completely my own, I created them on illustrator and then had them cut out on the CNC router, adding paint, acrylic and lights to them. The deck of cards chandelier was some freelance work for them I did a year after placement.

WORK PLACEMENT- Rethinkthings

During my third year of university I went on a 3 month work placement to Rethinkthings as a Web and Marketing Design Intern. Rethinkthings sell lots of quirky and fun gifts. My main roles were web and catalogue design. I helped design the shops website with an interactive homepage adding more engaging content.

The largest part of my placement was designing the Rethinkthings catalogue. I spent a long time taking photographs of the products, laying everything out and designing the catalogue to be fun and fit well with each range. Outside of university I have been working on my own graphic designs which I sell through Red Bubble. I started this in the summer of 2016 and have been slowly adding more products. Some are from paintings I have done, others sketches and others just computer graphics on illustrator.

I have always wanted to start my own business, this is not my first venture. 2 years ago I started up “Toni’s Tips,” a stick on acrylic nail company where I used to paint persoanlised designs for customers. This is no longer running as the cost of it was not feasable for the time I spent painting however, I have plenty of ideas for new start ups which I am planning on beginning soon now I have graduated.
