2006 media guide awards

The 2006 baseball media guide finished second in the nation in the NAIA-Sports Information Directors of America (NAIA-SIDA) baseball media guide contest. It marked the fifth straight year that the baseball guide earned a top-10 finish and the third year in the top-five.

The cover, designed by Matt Fancett, was named “Best in the Nation”. It marked the second-ever “Best-Cover” honor for a MU publication, joining Fancett’s 2003-04 basketball guide.

In all, Fancett has earned 15 national awards for publication and web-design in his five years at Madonna.

The 2007 guide, marks the first baseball guide produced by Fancett and first-year SID Tony Baldwin.

MEDIA INFORMATION The Madonna University Sports Information Department is always interested in helping members of the media in their coverage of the Crusader athletic programs. In addition to this guide, updated releases, statistics, feature ideas, photographs and travel plans may be obtained by contacting the Sports Information Office at (734) 432-5834. Please review the following policies and services that are intended to assist you in your coverage of Madonna athletics.

INTERVIEWS All interviews must be arranged through either Tony Baldwin, Sports Information Director, or Matt Fancett, Assistant Athletics DirectorMedia Relations, preferably 24 hours in advance. Generally, the best time to interview coaches and athletes is after practices and games.

PHOTOGRAPHY Photography credentials will be issued only to accredited photographers and television camera operators on assignment. Floor-space limitations in the Activities Center are considered when issuing credentials. Credential requests must be made by the appopriate editor/director from the news organization seeking access for a specific newsgathering assignment. Any video, photos or images shot at Madonna for commercial purposes of any kind is strictly prohibited without prior written consent from Madonna Athletics.

LIVE BROADCASTS All of Madonna’s men’s and women’s basketball home games and select road and tournament games will be broadcasted over the Crusaders Sports Network via Stretch Internet. Matt Fancett will serve as the play-by-play commentator and will have former Crusaders fill in the color commentary role.

MATT FANCETT ASSISTANT ATHLETIC DIRECTOR-MEDIA RELATIONS & PROMOTIONS In his fifth year at Madonna, and first as Assistant AD-Media Relations and Promotions, Matt Fancett coordinates all media relations for the athletic department’s 11 varsity sports. During his four year tenure as Sports Information Director, Fancett provided the publicity for six National Tournament qualifying teams, two ‘Final Four’ squads, 17 conference championship teams, nine conference tournament championship teams and over 75 All-Americans.

Additionally, Fancett has won 15 national awards for publications and writing, including ‘Best Web site in the Nation’ award in 2005 for the Madonna Athletics Web site. Fancett’s 2004-05 men’s and women’s basketball media guide was judged ‘Best in the Nation’ and his 2006 baseball media guide garnered ‘Best Cover’ honors.

Fancett also serves as Media Relations Director for the eight-member Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference and 17-member NAIA Region VIII where his duties include dissemination of information for all conference/regional schools and the oversight of whac.net and the NAIA Region VIII Web site.

A graduate of Eastern Michigan University in 2000 with a degree in Public Relations and Communications, Fancett, 29, spent one year at Concordia University and four years as a student SID at his alma mater before joining the Madonna staff.

Fancett and his wife Elizabeth (Regner), reside in Ypsilanti with their three children, Connor (8), Madeline (5) and Nina (18 months).

SPORTS INFORMATION DIRECTOR In his first year with Madonna, Tony Baldwin assumes the duties as Sports Information Director for the Crusaders’ 11-sport program. Baldwin will work in conjunction with Fancett on the Madonna athletic Web site and all media publications and assume the daily function of Sports Information Director for all 11 sports.

Prior to joining the Madonna staff, Baldwin served as Director of Sports Information at Concordia University in Ann Arbor, Michigan from July 2003 to June 2005 and most recently as head softball coach and intramurals director at Concordia last season.

During his time at Concordia, Baldwin served as the sole media liason for the athletic department’s 10 varsity sports and oversaw a complete redesign of the athletics Web site.

Baldwin’s first experience in the sports information field came as an undergraduate student at Concordia where he worked under Fancett during his stint as sports information director in Ann Arbor.

Most recently, Baldwin assisted Oakland University in March 2006 by serving as a member of the statistics crew at the NCAA Division 1 Men’s Basketball Championship First and Second Rounds held at The Palace in Auburn Hills, Michigan.

Baldwin, 26, is a 2003 graduate of Concordia University-Ann Arbor with a bachelor’s degree in Communication and is a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Baldwin resides in Ypsilanti.

NAIA CHAMPIONS OF CHARACTER sions leads to success in sports and in life.

CORE VALUES The NAIA Champions of Character program has established five core values that go well beyond the playing field to the daily decisions of our youth. These character values help young people - and those associated with their development - make good choices in all aspects of their life and reflect the true spirit of competition.

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Champions of Character program is designed to instill an understanding of character values in sport and provide practical tools for student-athletes, coaches and parents to use in modeling exemplary character traits.

Launched by the NAIA in 2000, the Champions of Character program addresses character issues more comprehensively than any other national program for youth. The program currently reaches hundreds of thousands of students on nearly 300 college and university campuses in North America and extends into their surrounding communities.

RESPECT Those associated with sport show respect by treating themselves, other persons, institutions and their sport according to the highest standards of conduct. It implies civilized and gracious behavior to players, coaches, fans and parents.

The NAIA Champions of Character program is an educational outreach initiative which emphasizes the tenets of character and integrity, not only for NAIA college students, but for younger students, coaches and parents in our communities.

Coaches, parents, administrators and community partners all have a role in developing students of character. The NAIA Champions of Character program brings them training, guidelines and behavior models to create positive environments that promote personal growth and fun sport activity.

PROGRAM CENTERS Campus-based Program Centers at NAIA colleges and universities across North America focus on education of NAIA coaches and student-athletes and broad-based community outreach.

They share the core values, messages and resources of the Champions of Character program with their local students, coaches, parents, and school and youth league administrators to promote meaningful change in the culture of sport in their local communities.

Members of the civic and business community also participate in the Champions of Character Program Center activities.

Madonna University serves as a program center with Head Men’s Basketball Coach Chuck Henry being responsible for leading the Champions of Character initiative for the Crusaders Athletic Department.

RESPONSIBILITY Athletes show responsibility by making academic progress toward graduation their top priority. They solve problems rather than make excuses, and are reliable team players. Students should be accountable for their actions and decisions, and coaches and administrators should maintain high standards of competence and conduct.

INTEGRITY For student competitors and their coaches, integrity means keeping commitments and conducting honest behavior. Coaches must subscribe to and practice the Coaches Code and Code of Ethics, and student-athletes must know and understand the Champions of Character Student-Athlete Pledge.

SERVANT LEADERSHIP This core value refers to putting the group first and becoming responsible for personal and group roles while performing at your best. Students demonstrating servant leadership have a primary purpose of serving others while striving to become a personal and team leader. The servant-leader provides a critical service to society and the great gift of good example.

SPORTSMANSHIP The conduct of educational sports according to the highest standards is our expectation for sportsmanship. Administrators, coaches, students, fans and parents are expected to act correctly even when others do not, and demonstrate fairness and equity in all contests and relationships.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH Through Program Centers, speakers and presentations about the importance of character both on and off the playing field are available to local schools and organizations. Classes, workshops and summits like The Power of a Coaches Words or Redefining the Term "Athlete" provide application models for coaches and parents to teach and model the five core values.

Campus leaders of character, NAIA student-athletes who demonstrate an exceptional commitment to the five core values, share the message of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship to youth of all ages through reading sessions and mentoring programs. “Writing across the Curriculum” was established as a norm at Madonna as was a computer course requirement for every student graduating from the University.

SISTER ROSE MARIE KUJAWA UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT

The Board of Trustees at Madonna University appointed Sister Rose Marie Kujawa, a ‘66 graduate and mathematics major of Madonna University, to the position of president of Madonna University, effective July 1, 2001.

Sister Rose Marie also completed graduate work at Drew University and the University of Georgia, and holds master’s and doctoral degrees from Wayne State University.A native of Detroit and a member of St. John Cantius parish, Sister RoseMarie is the daughter of Anna and Francis Kujawa. After graduating from Felician Academy in 1960, she entered the Felician Sisters in Livonia and began college studies at Madonna. She pronounced perpetual vows in 1968. Her earliest ministries included teaching at St. Valentine School (Redford Township), Bishop Borgess High School, and Ladywood High School where she also served as assistant principal.

To prepare her for the presidency of Madonna University, Sister Rose Marie brings a host of experiences associated with her 20year plus tenure at Madonna University. During her first appointment in Madonna’s mathematics department in 1975, Sister Rose Marie organized and taught the first computer courses offered at Madonna. This was followed by responsibilities in the College planning and development office. Appointed academic dean in 1979, Sister Rose Marie organized the first graduate program in 1982, a joint venture of the nursing and business departments.

Approval by the regional accrediting body prepared the way for the export of Madonna’s graduate program to Taiwan, a step which confirmed the University’s direction in international studies.

During Sister Rose Marie’s 17-year term as academic vice president, the sabbatical policy was developed and implemented, the faculty teaching load was brought in line with national standards, and the size of the faculty and the percentage of faculty members holding doctorates doubled.

Sister Rose Marie claims the highlight of her academic career was the transition of Madonna College to Madonna University. As chairperson of the “University Study” committee, Sister Rose Marie compared the academic quality and support structures of Madonna with thirteen other private universities and discovered that Madonna compared favorably with all of them. The regional accrediting body and the State of Michigan Department of Education agreed, thus ushering in Madonna University in 1991.

Besides her work at Madonna, Sister Rose Marie has served on the boards of St. Mary Mercy Hospital, St. Joseph Home (Jackson), SS. Cyril and Methodius Seminary, the Orchard Lake Schools, Angela Hospice (advisory), Marywood Nursing Care Center and Marybrook Manor, and Maryville Center (Holly). She was elected to the leadership team of the Felician Sisters of the Livonia province (1994-2000) where she served as Provincial Secretary and coordinated the major meeting (chapter) of the province in 1999.

Her travels have included fifteen trips abroad and visits to 23 countries. Outgrowths of these international meetings reaped several benefits for Madonna University: a professor from the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, an exchange program with Nagoya Gakuin University in Tokyo, as well as an ongoing relationship with Edgehill College near Manchester, England which provided internships for nursing and teacher education students.

Personal Message Madonna University was founded to prepare students like you for a full life. St. Iranaeus puts it this way: ”The glory of God is a person fully alive.” With a balance of intellectual, personal, and spiritual goals, you will be the best person, the best team possible.

May this year be marked with wonderful accomplishments and memories, and may your team continue the fine tradition and excellent standards set by your coaches and achieved by former teams.

Concurrently, departments and programs were encouraged to seek professional accreditation and approvals. In addition to nursing and education which were already accredited by their respective organizations, social work, dietetics, and the legal assistant program sought and received the coveted approvals. New undergraduate programs were also introduced: applied science, biochemistry, computer science, hospice education,hospitality management, international studies, Japanese, long-term care administration, merchandising management, church music, music management, pastoral ministry, professional and technical writing, psychology, and television and video communications. “Madonna Magazine,” a regionally syndicated public service program, became a permanent fixture in Madonna’s long list of opportunities for students to enhance their understanding of the world and to improve it through an ever-widening circle of communications.

Sister Nancy Marie Jamroz hails from Garden City, MI, and is a 1959 graduate of Ladywood High School in Livonia.

Majoring in biology, Sr. Nancy attained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Madonna College, a Master’s of Educational Administration from Marygrove College, and her Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Detroit Mercy.

Mike Meldrum continues his role as Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR) for Madonna for the 2006-07 academic year. The FAR is charged with the responsibility of ensuring that all participants in intercollegiate competition are eligible in accordance with the rules and regulations of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) prior to a student-athlete representing the institution in any manner. For Meldrum, this means working in conjunction with the athletic department on the eligibility of over 150 student athletes in 11 intercollegiate sports.

In 1983, after twenty years of teaching in Michigan elementary and high schools, Sr. Nancy was appointed Associate Dean of Students at Madonna College and became Vice President for Student Services in 1989. Besides Athletics, Student Services includes Campus Ministry, the Center for Personalized Instruction, Cooperative Education and Placement, International Students Office, Office of Disability Resources, Registration, Book Store, Residence Life, the Office of Retention, and Student Activities.

It is the hope of all involved in Student Life that Madonna students use their college experience to develop themselves holistically: classes aim to stimulate intellectual development; extracurricular activities help students expand their intellectual, social, spiritual, and personal growth. Athletics certainly contributes to one’s total development!

Mr. Meldrum has been affiliated with the university since 1976. He holds the rank of Assistant Professor and has been teaching in the Sign Language Studies Department since the program’s inception. Also, Mr. Meldrum is the Director of the Office of Disability Resources. He is the charter president of the Michigan Association of Handicappers in Higher Education and a member of the Association of Higher Education and Disability. Mr. Meldrum was the recipient of the 1994-95 Madonna University Faculty Excellence Award.

UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATION BRYAN RIZZO ATHLETICS DIRECTOR

Bryan Rizzo enters his fifth season at the helm of the Madonna University Athletic Department. In just four years leading the Crusaders athletic programs, Rizzo has seen 16 teams at Madonna win conference championships and six teams earn bids to the NAIA National Tournament.

Recently, Rizzo has overseen the upgrade of many of Madonna's athletic facilities, including the construction of Ilitch Ballpark, the home of the Crusaders baseball team, and the installation of new bleachers in the Activities Center, the home of the Madonna volleyball and men's and women's basketball teams. In the summer of 2005, Rizzo also watched as new scoreboards were installed in the Activities Center, at Ilitch Ballpark and at Madonna University Field, home of Madonna Softball.

Rizzo became the youngest director in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference at the age of 33. He took over a program that sent all seven of its teams to the playoffs in 2001-02, including four teams that participated in NAIA Regional play. In addition, four of those teams were either regular season or tournament champions in the WHAC. The tradition of success continued for the Crusaders in Rizzo's first year at the helm in 2002 as two Crusader teams won regular season championships and three captured WHAC tournament titles. In addition, Rizzo saw two teams, volleyball and women's basketball advance to the NAIA National Championships, with the volleyball team earning the second ever final four bid for a Madonna sport.

Rizzo has also worked to increase the quality of life for the studentathlete. Working with the University community, Rizzo saw scholarships at Madonna increase in the 2004-05 season and has watched with pride as the athletic department boasted a 3.17 cumulative grade point average in 2005-06.

It is no exaggeration to say Bryan Rizzo is someone who knows the Madonna athletic program from the ground up. A Livonia native, Rizzo has been involved in the program for 12 years, serving as the Assistant Athletics Director as well as the school's Sports Information Director prior to his appointment as AD. In his time as the school's SID, Rizzo was responsible for handling all media and publicity for the department.

During his tenure, Rizzo earned praise for the Crusaders Online Web site as well as for the numerous publications he produced. Rizzo also served two years as the Media Relations Director of the conference and was the NAIA Region VIII Media Director from its inception.

During his tenure as SID, the NAIA Sports Information Directors Association honored Rizzo numerous times for his outstanding media guides. Rizzo was also responsible for game-day operations for all seven varsity teams.

After obtaining a Bachelors of Arts degree from conference rival Aquinas College with a double major in English and Communications, Rizzo went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Sports Administration from Wayne State University.

Being familiar with the situation he faces as Athletics Director, Rizzo has several plans he would like to initiate in the near future. Among his top priorities are the continued improvement of facilities, playing venues and the weight training facilities.

His unrivaled passion for Madonna athletics is one of the main reasons that the University named Rizzo as the school’s second-ever athletics director and he hopes to continue the success that has become the norm at the school.

"I'm as excited today about Madonna athletics as I was when I started in 1994. I believe we have the finest administration, staff, student athletes and parents in the NAIA. I am honored to be a part of it all."

Rizzo, 38, currently resides in Northville, MI.

Rizzo has also overseen the growth of the athletic department with the addition of four sports in the last three years. Madonna has added men's and women's golf and men's and women's cross country, bringing the total number of sports offered to eleven.

Rizzo was recognized for his efforts in helping Madonna maintain its stature as one of the nations premier athletic programs in August 2004 with his selection as Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Athletic Director of the Year and NAIA Regional Athletic Director of the Year. In addition, Rizzo was hailed on a national level as the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) General Sport Turf Central Region AD of the Year. Rizzo was honored at the 2005 NACDA National Convention in Orlando Florida.

Perhaps the crowning moment for Rizzo thus far came at the end of the 2004-05 season when the department earned the coveted All-Sports Championship awarded by the WHAC annually to the top athletic departThe Crusaders won five conference ment in the conference. championships in 2004-05, the most in any academic year for the program.

Sarah Grice enters her second season as a full-time athletic trainer at Madonna University after two years as a part-time assistant in the MU Sports Medicine Department.

Beth Hubbard enters her first year as a full-time athletic trainer at Madonna University after five years as the head athletic trainer at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

In her short time with the Crusaders, Grice has endeared herself to the student-athletes through her hard work and dedication to getting them prepared and recovered from injuries.

Hubbard’s athletic training career started at Hope College, where she graduated Cum Laude in 1999. While majoring in Athletic Training, Hubbard worked with a variety of the Hope’s athletic teams and performed clinical rotations at Lakewood Family Medicine, Holland Hospital rehabilitation clinic and Zeeland High School.

Grice’s athletic training career started at the University of Toledo, where she graduated in 1999. While majoring in Exercise Science with a concentration in Athletic Training, Grice worked with a variety of the Rocket’s athletic teams. As a student trainer she worked closely with the team physicians, performed daily athletic training room duties and assisted in the supervision of other student trainers.

After leaving Toledo, she worked with Concord Physical Therapy in Concord, California. From 1999-2000 Grice moved on to the Sports Medicine Shop in San Francisco where she was an assistant athletic trainer and retail associate. She went back to Concord in 2001, working as an athletic trainer at Carondelet High School. Just prior to joining the staff at Madonna, Grice worked as an athletic trainer at County Health Center Rehab and Wauseon High School.

After leaving Hope College, Hubbard served as an intern with the Pittsburgh Pirates and the West Michigan Whitecaps before serving as a graduate assistant at Indiana University.

Hubbard also spent two years working as an athletic trainer at the OSMC Rehabilitation Services and The Center for Sports Medicine before completing her master’s degree from Indiana University in 2000.

Prior to joining the Madonna University staff, Hubbard’s duties at Calvin included providing athletic training services for 15 varsity and four junior varsity teams. Hubbard also supervised a staff assistant athletic trainer, several student athletic trainers and training room aides.

THE WOLVERINE-HOOSIER ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

The Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference was formed in 1992 out of the old NAIA District 23. As then Conference Commissioner, and former Concordia Athletic Director, Dr. T. Alan Twietmeyer recalls, shifting national allegiances and new NAIA playoff guidelines were cause for action. "...Northwood, Hillsdale, and SVSU were about to, or had just, gone NCAA II and with some new rules and strategies on the horizon we needed to form a conference for playoff matters, political clout, etc. The ramrod of these early meetings was Glen Donahue of Orchard Lake St. Mary's. We must have met six or eight times with very little progress. A major hurdle was that OLSM only had men's basketball. As the NAIA established affiliated conferences it mandated a conference size (at least six schools) and each school was to have at least six sports. It is ironic that the impetus for the conference came from an institution that is not in the league. About this time Butch Perchan, former AD at Tri-State University, got involved and was interested in joining. He pulled TSU out of their district and joined the WHAC. Butch was the first WHAC President and did much to set up the conference, establish fees, move paperwork, etc."

The Conference's six charter members were, Aquinas College, Concordia College, Cornerstone University, Siena Heights University, Spring Arbor College, and Tri-State University.

Madonna University joined the conference in 1997, with Indiana Institute of Technology joining a year later in 1998.

More change came to the conference at the conclusion of the 2003 year when TriState left the WHAC to apply for NCAA status. The conference also lost Spring Arbor following the 2004 campaign as the Cougars joined the MCC. The WHAC Executive Council voted in University of Michigan Dearborn as a member on July 1, 2004 to replace Spring Arbor, again giving the WHAC seven teams. The conference regained it's eighth member in 2005 when Davenport University joined Dearborn as an associate member in the sports of men's and women's basketball and men's soccer and golf.

In its 13 years the WHAC has become well respected not only regionally, but nationally. Conference schools have secured National Championships in several sports, both in the NAIA and the NCCAA. The Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference has come a long way since its inception, and we look forward to even greater heights of both academic and athletic excellence!

HEAD COACH GREG HAEGER HEAD COACH GREG HAEGER piece to his coaching legacy in 2005 when he guided the Crusaders to a 40-16 record and the WHAC regular season championship. At the helm of the baseball program, Haeger, 37, guided his team to their fifth NAIA regional tournament appearance and a spot in the NAIA top-25 for the first time in school history in 2005, peaking at No. 18 for most of the season.

Since taking over for Mike George on June 24, 1996, after a pair of seasons as George’s pitching coach, Haeger has led the Crusaders to a 245223-5 overall record. In recent years his teams have been a constant contender in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference and have gained national attention with their top-25 ranking.

After a decade of NAIA coaching, Madonna Head Coach Greg Haeger continues to define Crusader Baseball. His brilliant mind for the game and focus on the development of young student-athletes continues to establish Madonna University as one of the most elite collegiate baseball programs in the country and one that consistently vies for conference and regional titles each year.

Haeger, 37, enters his 11th year as Crusader head coach amidst a string of accomplishments that have undoubtedly been a direct reflection of his coaching style. His team’s 13-3 league record not only gave the Crusaders their second straight conference crown in 2006, but earned Haeger his second straight WHAC Conference Coach of the Year honor. He has now coached a streak of two consecutive conference Players of the Year in Ben Ramsey (2006) and Joe Greene (2005); Conference Pitcher of the Year Derek Dufrane (2005); and has had two players in the last three years (Ramsey in 2006 and Dufrane in 2005) earn NAIA All America honors with first and second team selections, respectively.

The longest tenured coach in the WolverineHoosier Athletic Conference enters the 2007 season ready for the challenges that await him.

No longer do the Crusaders have the luxury of sneaking up on opponents as they have in recent years. After a 2005 season that saw the team start the year with a pair of wins at No. 7 ranked Spalding University and go undefeated (11-0) on the spring trip to Florida, coupled with last year’s near berth in the World Series, the word is now out that Madonna is a force to be reckoned with nationally.

Adding to the buzz surrounding the past two seasons was the inaugural game at Ilitch Ballpark on March 27, 2004. Formerly known as Madonna University Ballpark, the brand-new $1 million home of Madonna baseball features a major league playing surface, full infield and outfield drainage, major league-sized dugouts and most importantly, an on-campus home for the team. In October 2005, a generous contribution from Detroit Tigers and Red Wings owner and Little Caesar’s Pizza founders, Mike and Marian Ilitch, led to the unveiling of the field’s major league-sized scoreboard bearing the new name beyond the left field fence.

The Crusaders christened their new home versus Urbana University (3/27/04) but the result was not what they hoped, coming up on the short end of an 11-7 defeat. The day was not a complete wash however as the stands were packed on what turned out to be one of the nicest weather days of the year. The large crowd cheered the home team on to a 4-3 win in game two of the double header.

Haeger is the architect behind one of the nation’s top pitching staffs, and the Crusader arms carried the team to their second straight 30-win season in 2006 and their third straight regional tournament appearance. With his pitchers fanning opponents 6.6 times per game, good for 10th in the nation, Haeger’s group went on to win the WHAC Conference tournament title and NAIA Region VIII tournament before falling one out short of their first trip to the NAIA World Series.

“That game was a special day for our program and one that I will always look back upon with fond memories,” stated Haeger. “The University and Athletic Department really made it a special day with all the fanfare, first pitch, national anthem, you name it...it was great for our kids.”

After two conference tournament titles, three NAIA regional appearances and several individual coaching awards, Haeger added the missing

new field with the success of the program into something that can become tradition here at Madonna,” he said. “Our goal is to make Madonna baseball one of the top programs in the nation, and a place where we can elevate our successes on and off the field for a long time to come.”

On the field, Haeger places a strong emphasis on teaching the game of baseball. Whether working as a team or through individual instruction, he has constantly worked to improve fundamentals. In addition, he preaches an aggressive style of play as the Crusaders’ stolen base numbers demonstrate. His work with the Madonna pitching staff is undeniably a major reason for the team’s success in recent years.

Last season alone, MU pitchers led the conference in numerous statistical categories and were among the nation’s leaders in ERA and strikeouts.

After an outstanding high school career at Detroit Catholic Central, Haeger was named Michigan Amateur player of the year, and was drafted by the Detroit Tigers following his senior season. Haeger put his professional dreams on hold to accept a baseball scholarship and pursue his education at the University of Michigan.

Haeger enjoyed a tremendous career at Michigan, earning All- Big Ten Conference honors in both 1998 and 1989. He led the Wolverines with eight game winning RBI's as a sophomore when he batted .292 with five homeruns. He tied for third on the team with 38 RBI's as a sophomore. A career .290 hitter, Haeger spent the majority of his time as a first baseman for the Maize and Blue.

In 1990, Haeger was again drafted by the Tigers and opted to turn pro following his junior season. While with the Tigers, Haeger moved up through the farm system, earning All-Star honors in 1991 and playing on the Florida State League Champion Lakeland Tigers in 1992.

Unfortunately, a knee injury ended his professional career. Following the injury, Haeger returned to Michigan to complete his degree in general studies in 1994. He later joined the Madonna staff as an assistant. His impact on the pitching staff was immediately noticeable as the team’s ERA finished in the top 15 of the NAIA in two of his three seasons as pitching coach. In addition, he was part of Madonna’s first sectional championship team in 1995.

Haeger recently added the duties of field maintenance director to his already full schedule. He is responsible for maintenance and upkeep of University Ballpark as well as the Madonna University Softball Field.

Off the field, Coach Haeger and his wife Jean reside in New Hudson with their sons Gregory III [Trey] and Evan.

ASSISTANT COACHES In his second season with the Crusaders, assistant coach Stu Rose will again work with the MU infielders and serve as hitting coach for the 2007 campaign. Rose will also reprise his role as third base coach, running the offense. He is also a key evaluator of talent in the recruiting process.

Rose is no stranger to collegiate coaching having served most recently as an assistant at the University of Detroit. Prior to his time with the Titans, Rose was the head coach at Henry Ford Community College (Dearborn, Mich.) where he became one of the most respected junior college coaches in the area and country. Rose left HFCC as the most successful coach in school history, amassing 435 wins and eight league championships. Rose also led his team to a pair of State and Regional titles and a National Championship runner-up finish in 1994. For his efforts that season, Rose was named the National Tournament Coach of the Year.

Rose joined HFCC after eight years as the head coach at Redford Union (Mich.) High School, part of a 25-year and counting coaching career.

STU ROSE

Rose has coached 143 student-athletes who have gone on to play baseball at four-year institutions or professional baseball.

Heavily involved in amateur athletics, Rose has served as the League Director for the Livonia Adray Collegiate Baseball League and the Redford and Livonia Connie Mack programs. He is credited with starting the first ever large scale fall baseball program in Michigan and currently coaches his son John in the South Farmington Blues baseball program.

Rose has been married to his wife Jean for 27-years and the couple have three children. Daughters Erica (21) and Joyce (19) and son John (16).

Todd Kalmbach makes the transition from the playing field to the coaching box in his first season as an assistant coach.

A two-year letterwinner for the Crusaders (2005-06), Kalmbach was one of the top-hitters in the Crusader program and among league leaders in numerous offensive categories in his two seasons for MU. Kalmbach will serve as a Graduate Assistant Coach for the 2007 season, working with the MU hitters and defense while coaching first-base for coach Haeger.

During his playing career, which started at NCAA DI University of Detroit, Kambach helped guide the Crusaders to backto-back Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference championships in his two seasons at first base. In his senior campaign, Kalmbach finished third on the team in hitting (.339), base hits (61), runs batted in (54) and doubles (13). As a junior, Kalmbach was the team leader in hitting (.370) and had the highest on-base percentage of any Crusader at .479. He was named to the Collegiate Baseball Magazine Players to Watch list for 2006.

His stellar play at the plate and on defense helped him earn All-WHAC honors as a junior and senior.

TODD KALMBACH

Additionally, Kalmbach was a two time WHAC All-Academic performer, a two time NAIA All-America Scholar Athlete and a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American.

As a prep, Kalmbach was a first-team All-State selection his senior year at Gabriel Richard High School, finishing his prep career with a .390 batting average, five home runs, 30 doubles, 97 RBI and 15 wins on the mound. He was honored as an All-Downriver selection each of his four seasons as well as twice being named to the All-Catholic, All-League and All-Downriver Dream Teams.

Kalmbach graduated in May, 2006 with a degree in Social Studies (Education) and continues his post-graduate work at Madonna.

The 2007 version of the Crusader baseball team might need to overachieve to accomplish its goals, a theme not unfamiliar to Madonna Baseball

The 2005 and 2006 Crusader baseball squads are perfect examples of what can happen when you take unproven talent and challenge them with greatness. The 2007 group has a blank slate with which to work, with the option to paint their destiny any way they choose.

Eleventh-year Head Coach Greg Haeger faces what could be one of his biggest challenges since taking over the program in 1997 turning this year’s young and raw talent into a viable contender at the national level. Armed with just a handful of experienced Crusaders, Haeger will try to mold new faces and new staff with difference responsibilities into a cohesive unit.

From an outsider’s perspective, this year might be a “rebuilding year,” a euphemism for “a down year” that Coach Haeger isn’t ready to buy into just yet.

“Understanding the challenges we face this year with the new personnel and having a young, inexperienced team, the realist in me says, ‘yeah, this could be a rebuilding year,’ but we aren’t going to hang our hat on that,” Haeger said. “Like always, we plan on winning the WHAC Conference and getting back to the regional tournament for a shot at the World Series.

“We aren’t going to use youth and inexperience as an excuse. We are going to accept the challenge

and turn this season into a reloading year instead of a rebuilding year.”

Only time will tell.

Losing players like Ben Ramsey, Derek Dufrane, Jason Barbeau, Greg Spanel, Clint LaFountaine, Kevin Entsminger, Todd Kalmbach, Justin Fabian and Scott Miller to name a few will not be reflected in the statistics alone. Statistics will come. It is the seasoned leadership of these former Crusaders that the coaching staff will miss most.

With all the success the program has experienced over the years, Haeger feels early on that this team might have a false sense of security.

“We’re trying to teach them that they can’t assume that just by putting on the uniform that, magically, good things will happen. Winning here doesn’t just happen. A lot of players have worn the Crusader uniform before these young men. They have paid the price and worked hard to put the program in the position it is in today. Winning is in the details.

And that is our challenge as a coaching staff, to teach those details...to play the game right.”

With those words in mind, let’s take a look around the diamond and preview the 2007 Madonna Crusaders.

2007 SEASON PREVIEW 2007 SEASON PREVIEW > pitching The performance of the 2006 Crusader starting pitchers was a key reason for the team’s success. The rotation was led by the pinpoint control of back-to-back AllAmerican Derek Dufrane, walking just 11 batters all year.

Clint LaFountaine and Greg Spanel provided senior leadership and nine combined wins. Add to that the breakout year of sophomore Will Kennedy, who led the team with a 3.32 ERA, and the performance of Keegan Beaton, who fanned 27 hitters in 27 innings as a freshman. Everything fell into place.

This spring finds the Crusaders in a much different position. Only Kennedy returns from the aformentioned names as MU trots out a largely inexperienced staff by previous team standards.

“We definitely have a different look on the mound this season,” Haeger commented. “But we still expect to produce. We have some guys stepping in that have the ability to make their own names in the record books.”

The pitching guru is referring to junior left-hander Eric Wendling, senior transfer Josh Regits, sophomore Joe Kennedy and juniors Carl McDevitt and Ryan Bardoni.

Wendling made three appearances last season before elbow trouble sidelined him for the remainder of the campaign. His most memorable start came at No. 6 Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.) where he held the vaunted Sea Lion offense to just three runs while fanning seven over eight-and-one-third-innings of work for a 5-3 MU victory.

“Eric has the ability to be a legitimate number one starter on just about any team we would face,” Haeger said. “He has good stuff, and we are continuing to work with him on the mental side of baseball.”

Joe Kennedy and Carl McDevitt come to Madonna from Concordia University (Mich.) and are pretty well-known commodities in Haeger’s eyes.

“Each of those guys bring something different to the table, but they both have a shot to crack the starting rotation,” said Haeger. “Joe is a tall power kid, while Carl has a great understanding of how to work his pitches.”

Bardoni has perhaps the best momentum heading into the year, having defeated Indiana Tech to secure MU’s NAIA Region VIII champinship in Indianapolis in his final outing. The right-hander threw a complete game with seven hits and seven-strikeouts for the biggest win of his career.

“I had the confidence in him that day, even though he had not seen a ton of time during the season,” says Haeger, “just as I have confidence in him heading into this year. Hopefully he can use that game as a springboard for the rest of his career.”

PRESEASON POLLS “He is a bulldog, plain and simple,” Haeger said. “He can flat out pitch and has the tenacity I am looking for in a senior pitcher.”

2007 SEASON PREVIEW 2007 SEASON PREVIEW Over the past two seasons, coach Heager used a platoon situation behind the plate with Justin Fabian and Nick Hippler. With both gone due to graduation, the faces may be new, but the routine the same.

With the departure of Ramsey and second baseman Jason Barbeau, Haeger will look to Fedorka to provide much needed leadership.

Barbeau and Ramsey alone combined for 129 hits, 21 doubles and 18 home runs last season.

“We’ve had the shuffling of catcher in recent years,” Haeger commented. “I think it is important to keep the catchers well-rested and let them prove themselves over the course of the long season. Then when we get to playoffs we try to go with the hot guy.”

“You don’t replace those two bats in the offense in one year,” says Haeger. “Ben was a once-in-adecade-type of offensive player and Jason was just so smart and a perfect field general.”

The departures open the door at third base for senior Gary Van Allen. A fifth-year player, Van Allen has seen starting and back-up duties in his tenure at Madonna. He enters 2007 as the starter mostly due to his experience with Haeger’s system.

VanAllen will be backed-up by transfer Gary Rule and red-shirt freshman Dave Cardenas.

“None of those guys will replace Ben’s bat,” said Haeger. “But each of them are terrific players in their own right. Nobody fields a better bunt at third base than VanAllen...that I have ever seen.”

The second base position is also open with sophomore transfer Ryan Morrow leading the list of candidates in winter workouts. Rule and senior Matt Humenay will also see playing time throught the season.

With Fedorka penciled in at short, the only decision is who replaces him on off-days or pitching performances. That honor currently goes to senior Matt Humenay. A grizzled veteran, Humenay has worked hard in the weight room each season to become a much stronger, viable option at shortstop.

Leading the way in winter workouts is smoothhitting lefty Garrett Ignasiak. The Florida Southern College transfer has established himself as the most potent offensive threat but has been away from collegiate baseball since the 2003 season. Also in the mix is red-shirt freshman Zach Flavin. The Novi, Michigan, product saw action in eight games before a shoulder injury shelved him for the remiander of the year.

> catching “We have a great battle going on behind the plate,” Haeger said. “I have three guys who all want to be the starter and that creates great competition in practice and makes each of them better.”

Luttman earned team offensive MVP honors following the 2006 season when he hit .337 and drove in a team-high 63 runs. Add in his pop (11 homers last season) and you have a potent leftystick in the middle of the lineup.

“We’re likely going to create playing time for both those guys,” said Haeger. “Along with Ryan Powell (transfer from Coppin State) we have three catchers that give us great depth.”

“Tony was a huge catalyst of our offense last season,” says Haeger. “He hit for average, power, you name it.”

The first base position is a battle of juniors between Dave Herrick and John McCracken.

Herrick was a first team All-WHAC performer as a designated hitter last season, but could see the bulk of his time in the field this season. With McCracken coming off nagging injuries last season and the departure off Todd Kalmback, the battle is wide open. Throw into the mix, leftyhitting sophomore Matt Rodeghier, and coach Haeger likes his options at the position.

“I like where we are at first base,” said Haeger.

“We lose a very good offensive and defensive player in Kalmbach, but I think all three of those guys are ready to step in and fill the shoes.”

The Madonna outfield has seen its share of talented athletes over the years, but none may be as potential-laden as the 2007 squad. A pair of All-WHAC performers return to the corners in leftfielder Manny Alavardo and rightfielder Tony Luttman, while centerfield will see a battle between familiar faces Mike Cauzillo and Dan Miller, as well as freshman Rikco Rhoades.

Luttman finished in the top five in every important offesive category last season and drew the most walks on the ballclub.

son of former big-leaguer Nikco Riesgo posesses all the tools to become a force in the MU lineup for years to come, according to Haeger.

“We will have to see how Tony handles life without Ramsey in the lineup,” Haeger says commenting on first-team All-American Ben Ramsey.

“Tony got a lot of great pitches because Ben was in there. We also had speed in front of him in the lineup, but he is such a good hitter I don’t think we will see a dropoff.”

“Rikco is a very raw, very talented athlete,” said Haeger. “We have been working hard with him over the fall and winter because we believe that he is the future of our outfield. He has the speed, the glove, the arm, the bat... he has all the tools, we just need to sharpen them.”

Roaming left field is fellow senior Manny Alvarado. After a rough start to the season, Alvarado rebounded to hit .271 with six home runs and 28 RBI. “Manny showed signs in the final half of last season that he can be a very good hitter for us,” Haeger stated. “The way the ball comes off his bat is unlike anyone else on our team...he has big-time power when all his mechanics are right.”

The real battle will come in center field where a trio of players look to vie for a starting spot vacated by the graduation of Kevin Entsminger.

Junior Mike Cauzillo and senior Dan Miller return to the mix and are possibilities to roam spacious Ilitch Ballpark.

Cauzillo, who made a splash as a freshman in 2005, had a down season in ‘06. Appearing in 50 games, Cauzillo hit just .127, but scored 23 runs, the majority coming in pinch-running situations.

Miller hit .176 in 33 games, starting twice. The senior scored nine times and drove in four runs.

“Both those guys play solid defense and are smart ballplayers,” says Haeger. “We can put either of them out there and know exactly what we are going to get.”

The wildcard is freshman Rikco Rhoades. The

Rhoades also provides Haeger with something he has never had in a Madonna uniform: a switch-hitter.

“He is the first switch-hitter in our program’s history,” Haeger added. “Right now he is more proficient from the right side, but he is getting better as a lefty and I think by this time next year he will be a force from either direction.”

Another player who could figure into the outfield rotation is Scott Boyer. The powerful lefthanded hitter could force Haeger’s hand if he translates cage-power into game-power this spring.

“Scott can flat out hit the ball,” says Haeger.

“He is a kid that could play the corner outfield spot, or see time at DH, but it will all depend on how he hits. If he hits the way he is capable, then we will have to find a spot for him.”

Coach Haeger and his staff have assembled another tough schedule in the hopes of preparing their team for a run at post-season glory.

The year kicks off with the annual spring trip March 1-10th. This year, the Crusaders head to Pensacola, Florida for the RussMatt Collegiate

Challenge, playing 13 games in a 10-day stretch.

The highlight games on that trip include a double-header with perennial NAIA World Series qualifier William Penn University (IA).

“The spring trip is always interesting because we are getting outside for the first time, getting our sea-legs under us and trying to mesh together the team.”

MU will return and attempt their earliest home opener in some memory, a St. Patrick’s Day matinee versus Malone College (OH).

Trips to perennial powers Spalding University (KY) and St. Xavier University (IL) highlight the non-conference slate before MU opens the conference portion of the schedule March 28th versus Indiana Tech.

The WHAC format has changed from a year ago with each team facing their league foes six times.

“It should be a very competitive conference this season,” says Haeger. “I think Indiana Tech will be back to their usual standards and Aquinas is always a tough, gritty team. Concordia made great strides last season and Siena Heights is building their program back up.”

If the Crusaders can win their third straight WHAC regular season title, they would host the WHAC tournament for the third straight year, May 3rd-5th.

Of course the ultimate goal is to get one step further than last season, and earn a trip to the World Series.

“We were basically one pitch away last season,” said Haeger. “I think that with the schedule we have built, we will prepare ourselves to make a run when it counts.”
