San Francisco Media Library

Location: San Francisco, California Course: Arch 603 Comprehensive Design Studio Professor: Jason Alread, Iowa State University Project Team: Tuo Ji, Ni Ni Software: Revit, AutoCAD, Sketchup, Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign Description The site of project is located in San Francisco, California, adjacent to downtown and a main waterfront roadwaythe Embarcadero. The theme of this project is to design a media library, which not only has traditional print collection and reading room, but also consist of theaters, exhibition space, youth center, media collection, etc. Media library is a place for people to use multi-media to store, shared and obtain knowledge. The form and organization of this library is defined by two powerful edges of the triangular site, which mainly has two bars, one is relative public, and the other one is relative private. The programs of this building follow this main concept. The overlapped triangular space of the two bars connects public wing and private wing, which is highlighted and emphasized by huge triangular staircases. The notion of the landscape design is to create open spaces and lead people to the main entrance of the building.

Yangzhou Cafe

Location: Yangzhou, Jiangsu, China Course: Dining Space Interior Design Professor: Wu Linchun, Yangzhou University Project Designer: Tuo Ji Software: 3d Max , AutoCAD, Photoshop, Illustrator. Description This project is located in Yangzhou, Jiangsu, China. This project puts emphasis on simplicity and practice, I adopted Modernism concept to design the cafe. Although Modernism has been prevalent for years, it is still with great popularity nowadays. As Modernism focuses more on practical use of the space, it suits the taste of contemporary life. As Mies van der Rohe said, less is more.

Xiamen Huamei Cigarette Factory

Location: Xiamen, Fujian, China Professional Practice: Competition Project Type: Renovation & Reconstruction Project Manager: Xudong Chen Project Team: Xudong Chen, Yang Chen, Violeta, Tuo Ji Software: Sketchup, Illustrator, Photoshop, Rhino, Grasshopper DESCRIPTION This project is located in Xiamen, Fujian, China, which is a project of renovation and reconstruction. The site was originally used as a cigarette factory. However, the factory has stopped production recently and need to be transformed to a multifunctional space. It would contain exhibition space, office, restaurant, shopping center, etc. Thus, we adopted diverse strategies and treatment for different buildings or landscape, according to the existing site condition. The design concept of the main building was inspired by tobacco leaf. Because this cigarette factory has already been a significant landmark of Xiamen, and the memory of it should be preserved.

Eastern Market Master Plan

Location: Detroit, Michigan Course: DSN 546 Apocaplyptic Studio Professor: Ziad Qureshi, Iowa State University Project Team: Tuo Ji, Ni Ni Software: SketchUp, Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign DESCRIPTION This project is located in post-industrial city of Detroit, Michigan. Detroit has survived and occasionally thrived after undergoing multiple "apocalyptic" scenarios. The project is to present conceptual design responses to the Apocalypse and the context of Detroit. The apocalyptic scenario is if Detroit Eastern Market disappears, it would be a disaster for Detroit in the future. Because Eastern Market is a historic market that has consistently been a lasting symbol of Detroit. It not only meets the basic needs of Detroit citizens, but also contains the valuable collective memories of local people. CONCEPTUAL DESIGN The project is to keep the vitality of Detroit Eastern Market, and enlarge the influence of it by redesigning the master plan. The redesigning is mainly focusing on the Russell Street, which consists of diverse programs, such as restaurants, bars, grocery stores and 6 main sheds. The redesigning stragegies includes widening the sidewalk, unifying the infrastructure, such as pavement, street light and vegetation.

Detroit has been in decline for many years and many design intervention enhance its continuing survival.

Detroit Eastern Market is one of the three main markets in Detroit that is still alive. It is also the largest historic pubilc market district in the United States.

Detroit Eastern Mrket is an energetic public place that contains diverse activities and memories.

St. Louis Apartment

Location: The Loop, St. Louis, Missouri Course: Arch 506 Materiality & Representation Studio Professor: Mikesch Muecke, Iowa State University Project Designer: Tuo Ji Software: Revit, Photoshop, InDesign DESCRIPTION This project is located in The Loop, St. Louis. The Loop is a vibrant six block area with more than 140 boutiques, specialty shops, restaurants, galleries and live entertainment. This project is a mix-used building. The ground level is mainly commercial and the upper levels are residential. The inspirations of the building are from St. Louis Gateway Arch and Ronchamp Chapel located in France. The Gateway Arch reflects St. Louis role in the Westward Expansion of the United States during the nineteenth century. The building I designed reflects the East and West cultural exchange.
