Color

Inspirations Bright saturated colors, intense blues, opaque pastels, nature-inspired neutrals, lighter-thanair sheers, warm, shimmery metallics – this year’s most exciting trends for nail color sound a lot like the color trends making news for home and fashion.

I

n fact, the trends for nail color so closely mirror those in the world of fashion and home decor today, they can easily be thought of in the same manner as you think about the most exciting colors you choose to wear or use to embellish your home. With this year’s hottest colors for home, fashion and beauty all being so similar, we wondered what inspired the newest polish colors and what’s driving these nail trends forward? We asked a few of our favorite nail fashion experts to share where they found their color inspiration. Ji Baek, owner of Rescue Beauty Lounge and nail stylist extraordinaire, shared her thoughts on what influenced her own line of polishes, “My inspiration every season does come from the fashion runway”, she says, “but it has to have synergy with concept of colors and trends.” She credits the collections of Prada, Balancigia and Lanvin for inspiring her newest colors and points to the brightly saturated hues of Lanvin’s gowns as influencing her to relaunch Chinoise, a color from a past collection, because she felt her line needed it to play off of this year’s trend of super bright colors.

Nail Color as Fashion Accessory

Essie Weingarten, founder of Essie Cosmetics, tells us her inspiration each season starts even before the first model hits the runway. “I’m inspired by everything! When creating a collection, I get my inspiration from the leather and suede colors as these manufacturers work further in advance than the designers. I also look at some of the Pantone color trends. Then I attend the fashion shows to see what’s on the runway and what will work in terms of nail color for the upcoming season. Essie nail colors are always fashion-forward and reflect seasonal trends.” The experts behind Zoya nail lacquers pay close attention to upcoming trends to ensure that their “color collections are of the moment.” “Our experts track trends in both fashion and cosmetics prior to color selection and then our marketing team generates a concept based on trend or theme and the color itself. When fashions for summer pointed toward a return to bold color and style, nail color answered with bright, fun ‘look at me‘ hues.” Jessica Vartoughian, founder of the Jessica Nail Clinic and Jessica Cosmetics International, took a more personal approach when creating her palette of nail colors this season: “I was invited to the premier of La Boheme in London. My friend Zondra Rhodes was the designer and her vibrant color combinations inspired me to create our Walk Like an Egyptian collection”. But this season nail trends are not just about color. A focus on personal well-being and a desire for earth friendly products are also influencing what is considered a “hot product”. This is a trend that will continue into 2009 and beyond.

When dark nail colors moved from counter culture to mainstream a few seasons back, sporting an inky manicure became as attention getting as carrying one of the season’s coveted ‘it’ bags. Conversation was not just about the color itself, but also about whether or not you would dare try colors like ‘Black Satin’ or ‘Lincoln Park After Dark’. Women of all ages decided to give this daring look a try and the trend exploded. The allure of short, Nail color is the ‘it’ dark nails was a fresh accessory. The woman alternative to the standard with well-manicured lighter shades at the time. Suddenly, beauty editors nails is the best were focusing on polish color dressed woman in the again and women were discovering that a simple choice of nail room! color was a quick, inexpensive -Essie Weingarten, founder way to stay fashionably “on of Essie Cosmetics, Ltd. trend”. Now as the fashion world once again embraces color, and the accessory du jour turns from the coveted “it” bags to even bolder accessory choices like “statement shoes” and “statement jewelry”, nail color too has become a more conspicuous expression of personal style. Today women are choosing colors that they may not have dared to try only a few years ago: vivid shades of blue, yellow, orange and purple; unusual colors like mushroom and putty; and modern feminine shades like pale lavenders and sheer turquoise. Even deep, leafy greens are making their way into salons and onto fingertips across the globe.

Mix and Match  Just as mixing together different styles and colors

within a room is a great way to give your home a burst of eclectic energy, mixing and matching the color of your nails with your wardrobe is a fun and simple way to add a little extra “oomph” to each and every outfit.  Keep in mind that even though we talk about this year’s colors as they relate to distinctive fashion trends, a polish does not necessarily need to be worn only with clothes that reflect the same trend.  In fact, playing with nail color and moving between trends can lead to some surprising discoveries. A sugary pale lavender polish may be sweet and feminine when worn with an equally sugary shade, yet becomes an unexpected neutral when set against the kinetic pattern of an “Art House”-inspired print dress.  A bright orange manicure can balance out a bold cobalt blue dress one day and the next day take on a life of its own paired with a soft khaki or pale gray military cut jacket.  A golden manicure and pedicure paired with your favorite bikini acts as a flash of jewelry by day and then looks quietly sophisticated out to dinner later that night. A sheer polish worn with a bright yellow dress creates its own unique energy and would be as intriguing as say pairing a bright yellow manicure with a floaty, sheer gown. There are no set color rules this year. Simply embrace your favorite colors, pick polishes that make you feel beautiful and have fun.

Blue Belles The color blue has received more press coverage than any other hue this year. Pantone, a global color authority, named Blue Iris “Color of the Year”. Leatrice Eiseman said they chose this hue because the bluepurple blend combines “the stable and calming aspects of blue with the mystical and spiritual qualities of purple,” and said that this hue “satisfies the need for reassurance in a complex world, while adding a hint of mystery and excitement.” When JWT, the largest advertising agency in the U.S. released its list of the things that define the times, blue was included. They see blue replacing green as the environmental movement’s color du jour, as Ann Mack of JWT put it so beautifully, “representing a much broader spirit of good citizenship”. Navy Blue, a color that has been associated in the world of fashion as a classic but ultimately conservative hue, suddenly began making waves in both the fashion and beauty worlds as a chic, modern alternative to black. A navy blue Chanel Couture gown worn by Penelope Cruz to this year’s Oscars, was a sophisticated standout amongst a sea of black. Beyonce’s love of a smoky navy eye is a sleek alternative to a more typical kohl lined lid. And a coat of a deep, dark navy polish packs just as much “statement-making punch” as inky black nails did a few seasons back. Chanel’s “Blue Satin” and OPI’s “Russian Navy” topped the list as the two most coveted shades of navy blue polish this past winter. Loved by so many so quickly, the two shades

began selling out, by way of waitlist before the bottles even hit the shelves, leaving some frenzied fashionistas searching high and low for a blue fix. Lucky for them other beautiful choices abound. OPI’s ‘Yoga-ta Get This Blue’, Nar’s ‘Midnight’, ButterLondon’s ‘Mariner’, Lippman Collection ‘Rehab’, Jessica Cosmetic’s Nail Colour in ‘Solar Eclipse’ and RescueBeauty Lounge’s ‘Dead Calm’ are a few favorite shades ready to satisfy the appetite for those seeking a deep blue hue. As we move ahead, dark blues nails will remain a popular choice for those seeking an edgy look and we’ll see the emergence of a much blacker blue inspired by technology. Look for a deep, vibrant navy so dark you’ll swear it’s black- like Orly’s ‘Star Of Bombay’. But navy isn’t the only choice for those craving blue. Just like we see in home and fashion, these lovely dark blues will be joined by some of their lighter and brighter cousins. Cobalt, indigo, peacock, turquoise, even super-hero blue – thanks in part to the recent opening of a show dedicated to super-heroinspired fashion at the Costume Institute – are making a splash throughout fashion. Yves Klein International Blue, last seen in the early 80s, is once again being reincarnated. The color, which many call the only patented color, is being trotted down the runways in every major fashion capital worldwide. Even blue denim, an icon of American sportswear, was reworked on the European Spring runways of Brilliant bold or Chanel and D&G. With patchworks luscious light blues: of both dark and  CND’s ‘Hot Pop Blue’ faded denim  Lippmann Collection "Rehab" giving luxury accessories, like  NYX’s ‘Thunder’ designer hand Rescue Beauty Lounge’s ‘Dead Calm’ bags and shoes, a  Butter London’s ‘Mariner’ surprising “rock and roll” edge. A palette of deep to icy pale blue eye shadows and bright blue mascara reminiscent of the 1980’s is back in style and looking “retro cool” set against pale lips – while these same shades worn on hands and feet feel ultra modern. China Glaze’s ‘Shower Together’, NYX’s ‘Thunder ‘, CND’s ‘Hot Pop Blue’, Revlon’s ‘Bright Sky’ OPI’s ‘Dating a Royal’ and ‘Sea Ya Later Sailor’,Jessica Cosmetic’s Custom Colour in’ King Tut’s Gem’, Orly’s ‘Rock Candy’

NailsColors orNow rs 5 CND’s ‘Jiggy’ and Zoya’s ‘Yummy” will have nails and toes singing the blues. When it comes to beauty this year, blue seems to have no boundaries. Take, for example, Marc Jacob sending some models down the runway at his Spring collection for Louis Vuitton donning not only bright blue nails, but bright blue lips as well. For Fall, dusty blues, blue-greens and purplish-blues will be livening up wardrobes and accessories. While cobalt blue will update a traditional blue and white palette for home. The combination looks fresh again in a mix of geometric, ikat and floral fabrics.

Both the young and the young at heart can carry off this color as long as the blue compliments their skin tone. But beware – if you have a lot of visible veins in your hands, blue polish might be “aging”, in which case a trendy blue pedicure might be your best bet.

Brights

One of the most exciting trends in fashion, home and beauty this year is the crop of super bright colors popping up on everything from haute couture to designer couches. Inspired by the exotic colors of India, China, Latin America and Morocco, this year’s most colorful palettes for home and fashion reflect our desire to add a little “worldly flavor” to our lives. Brightly colored African-inspired florals and prints mixed brilliantly together in collections from both Dries Von Norten and Duro Owlou. Ana Sui made a splash with a squad of “Manic Panic” rainbow-quaffed models parading down her Spring runway, Balanciaga’s brightly floral fabrics added a wash of painterly

So it comes as no surprise that these shades would make their way from the runway to our fingertips soon after the buzz of a bright colored summer hit the streets. Hues that exist somewhere between neon and electric are creating candy-coated manicures, so cheery and vibrant, you just can’t help but

smile. According to makeup artist Romy Soleimani, “bright polishes make skin glow,” making them the perfect choice to pair with a little bronzer and this year’s sexiest attire. Bright true yellow is one of the hottest accent colors of the year for both home and fashion. This sunny and positive color is being seen on everything from kitchen appliances to luxurious bedding and accessories for outdoor living. Bright yellow dresses from 1.3 Phillip Lim and J.Crew were Spring fresh, while Behanz Sarafpour’s tiered yellow dress, a solar colored gown at Vera Wang and a mustard blouse and scarf paired with tweeds at Carolina Herrera signal that yellow will remain an exciting trend as we move into Fall. Yellow eye shadow paired with vampy blood red lips created a fashionforward look on Derek Lam’s Fall runway. Equally exciting, bright, creamy yellows for your nails. Warm and lemon-y shades on hands and toes have become one of this year’s freshest and perhaps most unexpected trends. Sheer Delights The mystique of “what lies beneath” lends itself to a resurgence of transparent surfaces and sheer fabrics in both home and fashion.

U

nlike the sheer trends of decades past, a la Madonna overtly showing us her bra through a peek-a-boo blouse, this year transparency is all about softness and illusion. On the runway a model appears to be floating on air as she walks down the runway in a transparent blue and white-layered gown at Rodarte, while another appears to be encased in a thin protective veil of blue organza at Jil Sanders. Designer Christopher Bailey for Burberry Prorsum forgoes the company’s famous plaid, to create a collection featuring separates and dresses of ruched tulle, chiffon and organdy.

Clear and tinted Swarovski crystal beads are embellishing everything from curtains to hand bags. Lucite gives a 60’s modernist feel to interiors and takes “architectural” high heels to clear new heights. Even the iconic Chanel quilted bag got a see-through makeover this year in clear PVC vinyl. Lace is back and is becoming one of the most interesting textures for Fall. Layered over a mixture of both color fabric and bare skin at Prada, Dolce and Gabanna and Derek Lam, giving this ‘old school’ fabric a sexy modern, seethrough edge. Glossy nude lips and dewy skin with just a hint of pale color balance out

this season’s smokey eye while Yves Saint Laurent’s radiance enhancing fluid, Touche Éclat, famous for its ability to add subtle, sheer highlights to eyes, noses and lips, has reached beauty cult status. Today’s sheer polishes create the same illusion. According to Creative Nail Design, Inc, whose Plexi Pop collection of sheers flavored the runway’s of Tory Burch, Badgely Mischka and Behnaz Sarafpour, today’s sheers have the same effect for your nails that lip gloss has for your lips – high shine with just a hint of color. Naturally Neutral Today we often want colors to look “green,” no matter what hue they are and, more than ever before, looking stylish means looking natural. Offwhites, sandy and linen-y colors, rock and soil colors, brownish-greens – the colors of nature – are seriously fashionable now.

M

ucci Prada’s Spring collection of art nouveau-inspired daytime pajamas in greens and pale purples had her runway looking like it was taken over by woodland nymphs. In their fantasy world, even their cutout platform shoes of colorful suede appeared to be growing, living species. Erin Featherston’s runway princesses dressed in pale dove grey, seashell pinks and pale white were adorned with headpieces that appeared to have just been plucked from a nearby coral reef. Alexander McQueen’s daring toppers included not only a fake black bird nesting upon one model’s head, but a swarm of shocking pink butterflies encasing another. The woodlands make a move indoors with accents of antlers and horns, burled wood, fauxbois and textures of fur and animal skins. Botanicals, insects, birds and under-the-sea motifs are inspiring everything from wall coverings to bedding to jewelry as our love for the colors and the mysteries of nature grows. This season the most exciting neutral polishes are taking their color cues straight from our love of nature as well. Traditional nude, taupe and buff are being joined by pale grays reminiscent of silvery birch bark, seashell pinks, mushroom browns and even ‘environmental’ greens. alentino said goodbye to the runway by ending his final couture show with a parade of models all identically dressed in the same iconic Valentino-red gown, while Louis Vuitton’s signature Vernis monogram bag in a ombre-wash of red and orange became an instant classic amongst the jet set. Like a ruby in a crown, or a carpet in the Maharaja’s palace, red remains a key color as we move into the Winter of 2008/2009. dvances in technology have made specialized finishes really hot and after so many years of shimmery silver and brushed chrome or nickel, warmer metallics prevail as gold, bronze and copper hardware look fresh again as the choice accent metal for home. Gold, bronze and copper for fashion and accessories are more glamorous then ever. Glittery and shiny versions of these metal finishes work to wake up an outfit, while matte tones can work beautifully as a neutral. For Fall gold and bronze tones continues to shine, adding sparkle to the collections of Proenza Schouler, Donna Karan and Christain Lacroix. For nails, metallic and rustic golds will be an exciting color choice worn on slightly longer, more almond shaped nails. Solid Golds- CND’s ‘Crowned’, Peacekeeper’s ‘Paint Me Luminous’, Zoya’s ‘Glimmer’, Spa Ritual’s ‘Gold Digger’, Rescue Beauty Lounge’s ‘Moxie’, Chanel Nail Colour in ‘Gold Fiction’, Orly’s ‘Sexy’, Revlon’s ‘Gold Get ‘um’, Butter London’s ‘Swinger’, Sally Hansen’s ‘Antique Frost’, OPI’s ‘Curry Up Don’t Be Late’ and, Chanel’s ‘Gold Fiction’.

 Metallic polish is a great way to add sizzle to your hands and feet. One coat for a touch of shine, two coats for an all out glitzy effect that will have you feeling like a starlet basking in the sun on the Riviera.

Two for the

Price of One Matching the color of your manicure to your pedicure is no longer the norm. Instead women are leading “double lives” through their choice of colors. A pale polish for nails may softly be saying to the world “I’m demure”, while tangerine toes secretly tell a much wilder story.

Color does not have to be immediately seen to be enjoyed. Think of the seductive red soles on a pair of Christian Louboutin shoes that seem to flirt with the viewer with each step. And what fun to see a flash of the boldly colored silk lining in an Oswald Boateng jacket or be surprised by the brilliant blue interior of an otherwise stately stainless steel Wolf oven. And now with the French Manicure back in style and cool two-toned manicure styles like the “Gatsby” and “The Louboutin” gaining popularity, it’s no wonder that pairing two colors of polish within the same manicure is quickly becoming a hot topic. Brides have forever loved it, beauty bloggers argue its merits online, and even Vogue magazine recently dedicated an entire article to the pursuit of the perfect French Manicure. The French Manicure, a name coined in the mid-1970’s by Jeff Pink, founder, CEO and President of Orly Lacquers, as an homage to the Parisian collections that embraced his “natural nail look”,

has been a staple of salons and women alike for the past thirty years. The colors of the traditional “French” are easily recognized by its signature bright white tip set against a sheer pale pink or peach nail bed. The style gets an update with newer colors of rosy pinks, pale blues and creamy beiges topped with a thinner white tip in keeping with today’s trend of shorter nails. Menswear-inspired, two-toned pinstripe waistcoats by John Galliano, black and white laced up oxford high heels at Alexander Wang and boy-meets-girl suits at Ann Demeulemeester all lend themselves to the power of black and white. The look is pure ‘jazz age’ inspired and is a nice alternative to the more conservative French manicure. The surprise of color is an exciting up and coming trend in the world of home and fashion. A pair of dark eyeglasses appear conservative from the front and than reveal a jolt of color on the inside, British furniture designer Johnny Egg flocks the inside of drawers in shocking Scapperelli pink and Valencia has a line of furniture characterized by distinctive shapes, exotic woods and colorful lacquer interior finishes Perhaps one of the most recognized pops of surprise color - the red soles on a pair of Christian Louboutin shoes. In honor of this iconic look Charles Worthington salon in London created the Louboutin manicure. The nail is painted a deep, dark color on the top and then finished with surprising coat of red on the under side of the nail tip. China Glaze’s ‘Lubu Manicure kit’ has everything you need to replicate this look at home or make the look your own by choosing your own color combination of polishes. Just make sure the shade on the inside is intense enough to be noticed and the length of your nail is long enough for this manicure to show of the full effect.

The Beauty Buzz

With an overwhelming focus on the environment and personal well being over the past few years, the trends in nail polish go beyond just the hottest colors.

T

erms like “3-free”, “organic” and “vegan” and a focus on “clean” nail care in salons and at home are hot topics in beauty this year as are products that protect our hands and feet from the everyday effects of UV rays and daily abuse. “3-free” refers to polishes that do not contain the chemicals DBP (Dibutyl phthalate), Formaldehyde and Toulene – all of which have been linked to a variety of maladies ranging from birth defects, skin and eye irritations, liver damage, and anemia even to certain types of cancer. Zoya, whose slogan “Healthy is always beautiful”, has been making lacquers free of these chemicals since day one. They state “formaldehyde has been banned from cosmetic products in Sweden and Japan, while toulene is tagged in the State of California as a ‘reproductive toxin.’ Why risk it?” Butter London feels so strongly about the subject, they recently held a campaign to encourage their customers to go “3 free.” For every two bottles of chemical-laden polish turned into the company, the participants were rewarded with a free Butter London color of their choice.

Some socially conscious companies are not just creating polishes that are organic and Earth friendly, but are offering special colors that ‘give back’to the world as well.

pa Ritual, makers of 3-free, vegan lacquers, is not only dedicated to creating eco-friendly products and packaging and sourcing organic and wild crafted ingredients throughout the world, but to making sure their customers and the next generation are “Aware”. Sales of their color “Aware”, a naturally dyed and synthetic- free Coral Crème polish, will directly benefit the “Go Green Initiative”, the fastest growing and most comprehensive environmental stewardship program for schools. While Peacekeeper Cause-Metics, makers of nine “motivational” nail polishes such as “paint me grateful” and “paint me tranquil”, is the first cosmetics line to give all of its after-tax distributable profits to benefit women’s health advocacy and urgent human rights issues. A Safer Salon Visit

With the risk of skin infections and nail funguses making news, it’s important to know that each and every visit is a safe one. Dashing Divas, a salon with eight locations in NYC, takes pride in their “superior cleanliness and hygiene practices.” They use hospital-grade sanitizers throughout their salons, ceramic tubs without jets that can be safely cleaned between customers, disposable callus removing tools for pedicures, an autoclave system to clean all metal tools, and even go as far as providing each client (for a small fee) their own reusable “Manicure Pack” – all in the name of good health. Always be aware of your favorite salon’s practices. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or, if it looks less than pristine, to leave and find a salon you feel more comfortable with immediately.

For Healthy Tips and Toes Remember: Whirlpool tubs, often used during salon pedicures, are notorious for harboring germs and bacteria. Always make sure the basins and jets are properly disinfected between clients. 

 Don’t shave your legs right before treating yourself

to a pedicure. Newly shaved legs are more susceptible to irritation and bacteria.  Never allow a technician to “razor” the bottom

of your feet (this practice is actually illegal in some states!). Instead opt for the safer pumice stone or callous file.  Your cuticles play an important

role in protecting your nails and nail beds. Never allow your cuticles to be cut, simply ask to have them gently pushed back on both hands and feet.  A good solution is to B.Y.O.T

(Bring your own tools). Just remember to sterilize them at home between visits (it’s not so hard if you follow Ji Baek’s simple rules)

Perfecting the Home Manicure With Ji Baek Do you dream of having salon perfect hands and feet even though you’re a doit yourself kind of gal? You’re fashionably not alone as Ji Baek, owner of NYC’s Rescue Beauty Lounge, as she tells us how she is bringing the ‘sexy back’to doing your nails at home.

I wrote Rescue Your Nails to bring glamour back to doing it yourself at home. Somehow along the way, weekly professional manicures and pedicures have become a routine, when it used to be a special treat. It has become a status symbol where you are frowned upon when you do it yourself at home. At-home manicures and pedicures are chic! You have more control of cleanliness and sterilizing your tools. This is also great bonding time with friends and family that does not involve electronic devices.”

Practice the Three S’s: Sanitize, Sterilize and Store  Sanitize your work surface before and after each manicure or

pedicure.  Use clean, sterilized tools. Currently, the most shocking thing about at-home manicures and pedicures is that tools are shared with entire household without cleaning or disposal. It’s almost like having one toothbrush for entire family that never gets replaced. Follow this strict rule of thumb: if it’s made of metal, you may sterilize and reuse. If it’s not metal, do not reuse. Even if you are the sole user, your germs are alive and healthy. In this case, it’s best to

follow the example of health professionals. Sterilizing your tools at home is so fast and easy. Just soak them in rubbing alcohol for 25 minutes, and either bake them in the oven at 375 degrees for 12-15 minutes or cook them in rolling boiling water for 15-20 minutes. Then dry, seal tight in a zip lock bag, and label them with the date.  Always store your tools in an air tight container or zip lock bag so no dust or dirt can get in.

Sensational Tips

From The Pros Keeping your nails in tiptop shape is always a challenge, especially when at the beach or on the slopes. Here are a few tried and true solutions to protect your nails:  Always keep skin moisturized. Chipping and

breakage are caused by dehydrated skin and nails, so make sure you are applying moisturizer to hands and feet both before and after the beach.”  Always keep your nails polished.

Apply 2 coats of your basecoat, 2 coats of color and your topcoat. Apply under & over the nail and make sure you seal the edges. This will encase your nails, protecting them from the elements and from chipping & breaking, so you can enjoy all your outdoor activities without worry.  Apply a UV-inhibitor, high gloss topcoat the

day after your manicure and every 3-4 days to refresh and revitalize your manicure and to prevent polish from turning colors.  Massage oil into cuticles every morning and

evening to keep cuticles and nails soft and pliable and prevent brittleness.

Chipped Nail Polish:

Chic or Ugly? Would you dare to wear chipped nail polish- on purpose? It seems as if flaunting a less than pristine manicure has become a trend in itself.

Some women, proud to embrace the wear and tear of their busy lives, are bypassing polish remover at the first signs of chipping and allowing their polish to simple ‘deconstruct’ naturally off their nails. The disregard of ‘never leave the house with chipped polish’, one of the oldest beauty rules in the book, is leaving some to question- “Is the wearing of a chipped manicure or pedicure fashion forward or fashion fauxpas?” For right now, the answer is in the eye of the beholder and in this case, the hands and feet of the wearer! But what if the chipping is intentionally done the minute the polish is dry? Could this street trend be influencing high fashion? This seemed to be the case on the Fall runway of designer Ruffian where CND manicurist Roxanne Valinoti created pedicures of ‘perfectly chipped’ toes for the models strutting down their catwalk.
