JUVE BEATEN AT HOME AS LEADERS ARE HELD I read your article by Millicent Mwololo about Faith Akinyi last week and broke down. How life can change in the span of a second! I kept wondering what this woman ever did to deserve such treatment. The worst thing about the whole story is that it did not only affect her but also her children. What a heartbreaking story! PSG MOVE TO TOP AFTER BIG VICTORY OVER CAEN I have been reading Fatherhood 101 since Pudd’ng was little. My husband introduced it to me but I hated it at first because I did not have children of my own. Now I cannot wait for Wednesdays so I can read the articles. The one titled “Straight out of the mouths of babes” (Living July 22, 2009) made me think of how my ‘triple joy’ (two sons and a daughter who are six months old) is going to make me go insane. Despite that, I am very happy and encouraged. God bless you. The worst thing about the whole story is that it did not only affect her but also her children. What a heart-breaking story!

Fergie’s irritation at neighbours’ wealth flaunting turns to concern as Hughes’s men chalk up fifth win on the trot ahead of this weekend’s derby
T
here’s one derby (a game between two local rivals) that really matters in Britain, and that’s Celtic against Rangers. As often as not, the winners of this game between the two Glasgow sides end up taking home the Scottish league or cup trophy that season. There aren’t normally any challengers from the rest of Scotland, at least since the days in the 1980s when a certain young Alex Ferguson led Aberdeen to glory. South of the border, there are one or two derby games that attract more than just local attention. This is because of a combination of frequency of occurrence (it’s only relevant if two local sides are in the same division of the league) and the chance of the match affecting the destination of silverware. First amongst these is the Merseyside tie between Liverpool and Everton. This has the benefit of being played every year and sometimes being for a trophy. This was particularly true during the mid 1980s, when Liverpool and Everton regularly swapped the league title as well as winning the FA Cup. As added spice, the two teams’ grounds are either end of Stanley Park in Liverpool. Seven Sisters Road Next in line would have to be the North London derby between
Arsenal and Tottenham. There are two notes of caution here. Firstly, although only the Seven Sisters Road in London separates the two, it is a very long road — you’d have to be very fit to want to walk rather than drive or take a bus between the two grounds. Secondly, Arsenal may have twice actually won the English title in games away at White Hart Lane (in 1971 and 2004) but the traffic has all been one way. The last time Tottenham were the English champions was in 1961. This is so long ago that Arsenal fans often taunt, “You won the league in black and white” – that is, before the invention of colour television. These are the only serious competition to the Celtic-Rangers supremacy. That is, until this season, when one derby game may well surpass all others. Next Sunday, the newly-rich

There’s something about owning something that makes it more valuable to you and hence makes you look after it carefully. Ladies, it is the same with your house. Wenger blasts new Premier league rule ARSENAL boss Arsene Wenger has slamed the Premier League’s new rules on home-grown players — claiming it will weaken the English game.

rom next season all Premier League clubs will be required to have eight homegrown players out of a squad of 25. They do not necessarily have to be British but have trained for three years under the age of 21 in England or Wales. Wenger, whose Gunners side is often criticised for having no English players in it, does not believe introducing such limits would improve the current state of the game.
He said: “I am not in favour of it and I said that many times. “I feel that when you want to see the best players in the best league in the world, you have to be open. “To accept competition — and we live for competition — it is not to accept artificial rules and that is why I am against it.” This is because of a combination of frequency of occurrence (it’s only relevant if two local sides are in the same division of the league) and the chance of the match affecting the destination of silverware. Second-placed Liverpool trousered £50.3million while even rock bottom West Brom got £31.1million. Clubs were paid a set fee, money each time they were shown on TV plus a payment based on where they finished. The League’s turnover was up six per cent from last year’s £951.6million. Chris Brady, dean of BPP Business school, said: “The Premier League’s not bullet-proof - but it’s not far off it. Where else do you have a billion people watching the same thing for two hours a week, ten months of the year?” The Premier League got £2.7billion by selling TV rights for three seasons from 2007 to 2010. Arsenal’s Walcott clocked 22.72mph and Sol Campbell took a shock second place in the top-flight race with a 22.50mph top speed. The top speeds have been calculated by Castrol using data captured over two seasons. Didier Drogba and Fernando Torres would be in a photo finish for third with their joint top speed of 22.27mph. Football’s fliers hit incredible speeds and Walcott’s bursts mean he would run 9.9secs for 100m - if he could sustain his top speed of 10.1m per second. Double Olympic champ Bolt ran 9.58secs to break the 100m world record in Berlin.

hould you give a razor blade to the child that cries for it? The Swahili saying, ‘Mtoto akililia wembe mpe’ says you should do just that. But according to psychotherapist John Gaiti, it is possible to warn children of the danger posed by the various gadgets and situations in their environment without putting them through pain. Our homes are full of appliances, chemicals and even cosmetics that could pose a danger to children. There have been many cases of children who are left unattended for just a few minutes and end up tipping boiling pots of water over themselves, resulting in serious injuries. Sometimes, these accidents end in death. All children, from the moment they can crawl, are governed by curiosity and their adventures keep
hospital casualty staff busy. They will put anything in their path into the mouth, or liberally apply on themselves ointments meant to treat medical conditions. The list is endless. So how feasible is it to conceptualise ‘burning’ to a child who has not experienced the searing pain caused by hot water or fire? Would it not help to expose the child to the heat under parental watch rather than leave them to explore on their own, with potentially fatal consequences? I grew up in the village, where light came from lanterns and the koroboi the tin oil lamp and I still remember Mum watching attentively as a child reached for the dancing flame only to cringe as the heat touched the little fingers. The curiosity was sated there and then and the act was never repeated again. Gaiti, a counsellor and trainer at Amani Counselling Centre and Training Institute in Nairobi, frowns on such methods, which go against his professional training. He roots for effective parent-child communi-

I
was busy working in the office 25 years ago when a colleague called me to the reception area of the old Nation House on Tom Mboya Street, saying there was someone who had come to see me. It was not anyone I knew but the impeccably dressed gentleman did not keep me in suspense. He went straight to the point, saying he had read my by-line in the newspaper and wondered if I might be the daughter of his long-lost friend. I asked what his friend’s name was, and he said: “John Kweyu”. He quickly added: “Are you Veronica’s daughter?” He had identified both my parents positively and it was my turn to ask who he was. As he told me his name Nyalo Kitheka I vaguely recalled seeing a picture of him posing with Dad hanging on the wall of the family home in Butere. I was amazed that he could take the trouble to try and trace his friend decades after they had quit the army to become drivers for numerous firms before eventually retiring to their respective rural villages. After chatting for a few more minutes, we parted on the note that I would find time to take him to see Dad, who by then was confined to a wheelchair following a stroke he had suffered. But my work schedule made it impossible for me to reunite the old friends, who had first met in the Kings African Rifles Army as recruits. But if I thought that Dad’s death 15 years ago marked the end of Mzee Nyalo’s interest in me, I was wrong. It quickly became evident that the old man was not about to break the link he had re-established even though his friend was dead. He set about showing me that he belonged to the old school of friendship that prides itself in being ‘my brother’s keeper’ a friendship that does not die simply because the common bond has been cut.

He made a point of visiting me at home often and these were not just social visits. He wanted to know how I was getting on, how my children were doing and if there was anything he could do to help whenever there was a need. This was a man I knew nothing about in my growing years, but here he was keeping an eye on his friend’s daughter. I became curious to discover why Mzee Nyalo had not given up on me despite the fact that it had taken the better part of 25 years for me to return his many visits to my house. Finally, sitting in his Tumba Village home in Mung’ala Location of Machakos District, the 82-year-old man says: “In the next world, there are only two locations: heaven and hell. If I go to heaven, John is sure to ask me if I looked after the children he left behind. I want to be able to say, ‘Yes!’” I would say yes too, were my father to ask me the same question of his friend. My mind races back to the 2008 post-election mayhem when Mzee Nyalo was among the few people, other than family members, who were constantly on the phone, asking if my family and I were safe. I was touched each time he called, especially because finding airtime at that time was a tall order. I nudge him further about the tremendous affection he obviously has for me the kind of loving care that caused him to visit me in my Nairobi home last year all the way from Machakos carrying a huge bunch of bananas. “I want you to know that we are not starving in Ukambani,” he had joked. The matatu he was on failed to stop at the stage near my house and he had to hire someone to help him carry the bananas to my house. My, was it heavy!
