MONTHLY EDITORIAL

As we welcome this new year with resolutions and goals for a more productive and flourishing life, I think it is important that we first take the time out to reflect on the past year and what we have learned. I would like to focus on one particular, successful person of 2008, and what we can all learn from his actions. As you may have already suspected, this person is President-elect Barack Obama. Obama has taught us that in order to be successful, we must first, keep a cool head. Second, we must stay consistent and on point with our message. Third, we must always address problems swiftly and with courage. Lastly, we must always stay true to ourselves. During an episode of Saturday Night Live, Fred Armisen spoofed Obama by saying “I only have one rule, I keep it cool”. Although Armisen’s depiction of a cool dealing Obama was comical, the veracity in that statement is no laughing matter. Obama’s coolness and even keel temperament may have been the deciding factor for many of his constituents. In a time of war, economic strife, foreclosure disasters, environmental woes, health care crisis and educational decline, the country yearned for someone with the ability to rationally and intelligently provide sound solutions. Obama demonstrated this soundness during the presidential campaign as he calmly battled the GOP attack machine with grace, intellect, and logic. During the financial decline on Wall Street, McCain suggested suspending the scheduled debate and announced the suspension of his campaign, urging Obama to do the same. Obama responded with strength and composure by saying that it is in these particular times that America needs to hear from its leaders. This was a critical turning point in the presidential race. McCain’s actions were seen as knee jerky and erratic, while Obama was viewed as the seasoned, unruffled captain of a sinking ship. To many Americans suffering from the ills of the onset and the current conditions of the Iraq war, it was refreshing to see someone “think” before they act. It can be concluded that Obama won over many hearts with his steady mind. We can all take this lesson from Obama: In the midst of chaos, don’t act impulsively, use logical and deductive reasoning to think through the situation. Since that cold day in Chicago when the man with “a funny name who didn’t look like any previous presidents on the dollar bills” announced that he would be running for the highest office in the United States, Obama has been consistent with his reason for running. He wanted to bring about change. Not just any change, but change that we could believe in. Americans believed him because he never detoured or frolicked away from his message. Unlike Obama, McCain strayed from his message. McCain began as the candidate with experience and by the end of the RNC; he miraculously became the candidate of change. He lost his foundation and drove his Straight Talk Express into a ditch. Americans wanted someone with the ability to clearly and decisively tell them who they were and what they were going to do. As Obama showed, when you believe in your message and follow through to the end, you will inevitably win. When the stories of Reverend Jeremiah Wright and Bill Ayers abruptly introduced themselves into the mix, Obama’s chances for success seemed to decline. Wright’s sermons spewed relentlessly on the news channels and Ayer’s terror promoting statements joined with voracity. It was reasonable to conclude that these events would bring an end to Obama’s quest. But, with courage and with

swiftness, Obama gave one of the greatest speeches on race since Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He spoke to Americans like adults and we listened. He told us about his childhood and what he believed. He made sure by the end of his speech that every American knew that he believed in the static nature of this country regarding race relations. He told us that hateful statements needed to end and Americans needed to hear each other’s plights in order to come together as one. This profound speech opened American minds and allowed them to digest Obama’s philosophy without the exploitation of negative sound bites. In this same eloquent manner, he addressed his weak association with Ayers and denounced terror immediately and repeatedly. By addressing Americans at the onset of any problems, he gained our respect and trust. He stopped fear from invading our minds. He taught OSC us that hiding from problems is not the solution. He showed us that when we confront our troubles with truth and courage, everything positive will fall into place. CON A Throughout the course of the camVIN BA ICH E K paign, Obama told the American people ER M BRCKOS PTASHO ROBLES FILM F the story of his life and what he believed RO to be true. He believed that Americans were decent people with dreams for a better life for themselves and their families. He told the story of how hope guided him through the great challenges of his life. He remained true to his message and thereWOOD fore remained true to himself. Obama has HOLLY S taught us that when we remain true to ourWANT selves and our beliefs, we have the power to YOU! G make the most impossible dreams possible. O In conclusion, we can learn a lot from our lm Digital Fi 44th president to help us successfully conquer e 2008 s” th at d Eastwoo in Paso Roble this new year. Obama’s steadiness, courage, Festival VI S UP G ON T DA truth, and intelligence are character traits that evEY LA M & BL AN LU ON G M TO UC ER S: eryone should possess. A new year means a fresh E PR OD EC UT IV CF C EX start and new resolutions to improve our lives. Our resolutions to do or not to do a particular thing are made on January 1 and usually broken minutes, hours, or sadly seconds later. We rarely think twice once they are broken. Everybody makes them and everybody breaks them right? One of my favorite quotes from Obama is: “People say ‘Well, he may have good ideas, he may be inspiring, but he hasn’t been in Washington long enough.’ They want to season and stew me until they boil all the hope out of me, like everybody else.” This year, let’s take one more lesson from our new president: Don’t settle for simply being like everybody else, strive for more. Let’s all hold on to our hope for a prosperous year and not let anyone slowly stew our dreams away, add negative seasoning or unneeded hot water to our lives.

Williams---along with many other equally-talented individuals. Aside from these more wellknown performers and artists, the PRDFF was attended by many of the ‘new-and-emerging’ film-makers whose films were screened. Throughout the festival, from early in the day until late into the evening, visitors and locals enjoyed panel-discussions, digital-screenings of fabulous ‘new’ or rare films and documentaries, fantastic concerts, and the great night-club scene around town in the evening. Among the guests on-hand for various screenings were at least a few Los Angeles-based film-distribution company representatives, including Tom Luong from the Central Film Company. Some ‘new’ film-makers may be surprised to receive release offers on their work.. “It was a great festival,” Luong said. “I was primarily looking for films in the ‘family’ genre, and I found a few at the screenings that were excellent. Paso Robles is a great town and the festival was very well-organized. I’ll be back next year.” Paso Robles is about 300-miles North of LA, and it’s also a wonderful country atmosphere of natural hot-springs, wineries, lakes, hills and valleys, easy beach-access, and plenty of cows, horses and farms.

WHO IS ‘LANCER GALACTIC’, AND WHY IS HE ABDUCTING MY BEER???

CFC Partner and Film-Maker Tom Luong creates a new low-budget sci-fi masterpiece for beer-lovers and UFO-fans everywhere In the new world of today’s low- ‘Lancer Galactic’---a fictional ‘humanoid’ budget independent films, probably the space-traveler, with modern good-looks least likely genre for ramped-up success (of course), enough time at the gym on his with audiences and DVD-viewers, is the space-ship to put up a good fight when so-called ‘science-fiction’ story. Why? The he runs into the bad guys, and a few reason is fairly clear: sending your hero way-out character-details and high-tech and cast into outer-space can be expensive, ‘toys’ to make things interesting. Lancer especially when audiences are ‘spoiled’ by was birthed kicking-and-screaming, with mega-budget sci-fi films with vast special- a collaborative creative jump-start from effect costs. What is it? Well, given that it’s work best, is The same is the case with a ‘higha pretty ridiculous story, but with a new film from filmLancer Galactic has arrived on maker Tom Luong, working concept’ idea Earth exactly eight days, four through his own company or story-hook, hours and 33-minutes prior (Tom Luong Films), and executed on to the explosion of our Sun, shooting for a wide DVDthe complete and utter film for low-cost and release from The Central devastation of the Earth, and Film Company. After all, they reasoned, any populated and developed world such as the Earth is a treasure-trove of natural wonders found nowhere else in the Galaxy, or the entire Universe. Or, in simple terms---they don’t have beer back on Lancer’s planet. It’s a long drive to the corner-market to pick up a six-pack for sure, but Lancer is good for the game and there’s much more to this great yarn. 6 / HOLLYWOOD WORKS / JANUARY 2009

Writer Julian Phillips has feature-film credits on several current low-budget films, including urban-crime films, romanticdrama, documentaries, and others. Phillips has been hired to write as many as 12 feature scripts in the last three years, and also teaches screenwriting classes. Other credits include stage-plays performed for live-audiences, a number of ‘spec-script’ sales and options, a wheel-barrel-full of children’s books for a European media company, and more. “I love this kind of low-budget story,” Julian commented. ‘The way they work best, is with a ‘high-concept’ idea or storyhook, executed on film for low-cost by emphasizing story-aspects that studiofilms would probably never touch. For Lancer, the humor is up-front. Here’s a guy who has traveled 20-billion light-years or whatever, trying to explain to his new LA-style girlfriend that the Sun is going to explode, while at the same time sampling quality beer in local bars, slipping past an FBI-Agent who is onto his gig, and doing battle with appropriate bad-guys. There’s more to it, but the set-up is just too cool. When you have a situational story like that, everything falls together for the script like a really great deli-sandwich, and you can make a very cool small film for very low-cost, that audiences will respond to at the level at which it was created. So it can be a real winner, and it will be a real winner.” So, if you’re out star-gazing or just catching the latest great rumors about UFO-visits to Earth or alien-affairs at Area-51, be sure to have a beer with that heaping plate of well-done ‘End of the World’ edibles. You never really know--it may not be us human-types that are really of much interest at all here on Earth, to any so-called ‘aliens’. But Earth-beer? Definitely the best in the Galaxy! And only someone like Lancer Galactic could make such a statement with any authenticity. Look for this feature-length film from Tom Luong and Julian Phillips in the Spring of 2009!

FILM What Happens when you're 'Grounded'? TOM LUONG’S FAMILY-COMEDY FILM REVEALS THE TRUTH! Not every family is as serious about teenage behavior and domestic civility-andorder as teenager Missy-Ann Peterson’s. A typical ‘white-bread’ mom-dad-son-anddaughter bunch living the good life in rural Southern California in the Big-Bear area, Missy-Ann’s family includes her younger brother Du-Gong, her dad and his replacement wife Cathy-Lee, a classic out-of-place step-

mom. When the kids are caught goofing off and breaking curfew, Cathy-Lee has them both ‘grounded’ for their entire Christmas vacation---a crushing blow for the two siblings, who were planning a good time with their friends. Not to be out-done by Cathy-Lee, Du-Gong and Missy-Ann plot their escape and soon they’re fee---only to discover, along with their friends, that the two creepy-looking guys they’ve seen while ‘breaking-therules’ themselves, are in fact bank-robbers, on the run and hiding out in the Big-Bear 10 / HOLLYWOOD WORKS / JANUARY 2009

countryside. The rest of the story, including how the teens out-smart the creepy criminals, how their young African-American friend ‘Mr. Shorty’ finally overcomes his bizarre confusion of Christmas with Halloween, how a local retired Sheriff’s Deputy helps them trap the bad-guys, and how they manage to hide all of this from their parents---all of this and more are for audiences to enjoy with the planned production and release of Tom Luong’s brain-child family-film, ‘Grounded’. Tom brought his idea to writer Julian Phillips last year, and the script was completed in early 2008. When Tom was offered a partnership with the Central Film Company, ‘Grounded’ was intended as his first-up project. Budgeted for around $300,000 to $400,000 or more, CFC has contracted with Tom to seek financing as ‘product-placement’ opportunities,

and also for casting options, as well as to release the completed film, and facilitate production. Tom will direct the film, with production to-be-arranged for locations in or around the Big-Bear and Lake

Arrowhead areas of Southern California. The story will be captured on HighDefinition digital-video, with hopes to cast well-known ‘face-value’ up-and-comer acting talent. ‘Grounded’ is planned to be completed by the summer of ’09 for a release next year. “Tom’s idea for this film is a really nostalgic notion for kids, teens and families, that at first glance may seem too-cute or overly simplified,” said writer Julian Phillips. “Modern audiences are very sophisticated story-wise, and far more familiar with violent stories featuring psychotic criminals with deadly arrays of harmful weapons. If you look at the very early Disney live-action films of the 50’s and 60’s---films that may have featured Kurt Russel in the lead role co-starring with a chimpanzee, and were done very low-budget---‘Grounded’ is resurrecting those ideas and emotions. Of course, it never really dies---families and youngpeople, in conflict with criminals or ‘bad guys’ in general. You need a happy ending here, and you need characters and situations that modern audiences will accept. But the values of courage and resourcefulness, a playful sort of funoriented spirit to the whole thing, and a wholesome rejection of criminality---this is why a Disney film like ‘That Darn Cat’ with Hailey Mills and Dean Jones worked so well, during the tumultuous 1960’s. There’s no way teens today will not connect to those feelings, the same as they might be shocked and appalled by really violent films today---because beneath it all, we all long for the same simple virtues.

U2 Announces March Release For ‘No Line On The Horizon’

Britney Spears

DID IT AGAIN LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The resurgent pop princess scored her fifth No. 1 album this week with “Circus,” according to Billboard. The release sold 505,000 in its opening week, making it one of the year’s best chart debuts and topping 2007’s “Blackout,” which bowed with 290,000 copies sold. Setting a new record, Britney became the first act in the SoundScan era (since 1991) to have four albums debut with sales of a half-million or over. Her previous chart-toppers included her 2000 sophomore album, “Opps! I Did It Again,” which sold 1.3 million in its first week; 2001’s “Britney,” which dropped 746,000; and 2003’s 609,000selling “In The Zone.” And the Billboard 200 isn’t the only chart she’s ruling this week – title track “Circus” will debut at No. 3 on Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart on Thursday, joining “Womanizer” in the top 10. 14 / HOLLYWOOD WORKS / JANUARY 2009

SETTING A NEW RECORD, BRITNEY BECAME THE FIRST ACT IN THE SOUNDSCAN ERA (SINCE 1991) TO HAVE FOUR ALBUMS DEBUT WITH SALES OF A HALFMILLION OR OVER.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - U2’s next album may be called “No Line On The Horizon,” but now, there’s an end in sight for the long-awaited followup to 2004’s multi-platinum “How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb” — “No Line” will be released on March 2, 2009, the band announced on Thursday. After reportedly recording more than 50 songs, the band said they felt they needed a few more before they were done with the project, according to Interscope/ Geffen/ A&M chairman Jimmy Iovine. “I met with the guys in U2, and they say to me, ‘You know what? This album needs two more songs, and it will be exactly what we have in mind.’ I go there and I listen, and I agreed with them,” Iovine told Billboard in November. “It’s a great record, but it deserves the time. Labels need to work with artists to help them achieve their best work, not to jam records out that are half-baked or threequarters baked.”

Fall Out Boy thrills fans with small-venue S.F. show. Say what you will about Fall Out Boy, and there’s plenty to say, both good and bad, but don’t question the loyalty of the band’s fans. Twenty-four hours before the start of the multiplatinum pop-punk quartet’s gig at the Great American Music Hall, fans arrived at the venue asking if it was too early for them to get in line. They were willing to camp out overnight — in the rain and in one of Bay Area’s roughest neighborhoods — to try and score tickets to the Sunday night concert. They were turned away, but several had returned by 11 a.m. By 3 p.m. — six hours before the group would take the stage — the line numbered several hundred and stretched well around the block.

Implements Project to Help Little Soldiers

The Little Soldier Project is a song/music video campaign to benefit the Patrick Chege Memorial Orphanage. “Little Soldier” is a song written by Marla Williams and produced by Legend.

M

arla Williams is also the lead vocalist. This charity single is intended to raise funds to help sustain the Patrick Chege Memorial Orphanage. This year, Central Film Company West (CFCW) will begin the fisrt stages of production for the single and music video. This project will be distributed both foreign and domestically. All proceeds from the sale of the charity single will benefit the Patrick Chege Memorial Orphange. Patrick Chege was born and raised in Kenya but traveled Marla Williams all over Africa with a mission of hope. He was a reverend, teacher, counselor, and friend to

those in need. He built schools and homes and distributed food, clothing, and other necessities to the poor. During his ministry, Rev. Chege was to be found anywhere disaster struck, whether it was drought, famine, flood, political unrest, or tribal clash, he would organize his fellow ministers and do anything in his power to restore and rebuild. On February 16, 2002, Rev. Chege died, leaving behind a legacy of hope. It is in his honor, that his daughter, Siamanda Chege dedicates this orphanage. Following in her father’s footsteps she hopes to alleviate the pain and suffering of Africa’s children by offering a home to those in need. The Chege Orphanage, located in Kenya, began in 2006 as a humble concern for children orphaned largely as a result of HIV/AIDS. Now in Africa, and in various Asian countries, Latin America, Europe and the Middle East, children as young as nine have been used as soldiers, often involved in armed conflicts. This project will provide a voice for the little soldiers and expose the plight of these children to the world. The mission of the orphanage is to empower children by giving them the tools they need to achieve success in their lives. The orphanage provides children with a warm home, a nurturing environment, and most importantly, a sound education through high school and beyond. In addition, a social worker and eight loving guardians are provided. The vision of the Chege Orphanage is to take more children out of poverty, and give them a loving home, an education, and the tools to create a bright future. Please visit the website, www.chegeorphans.com for more information regarding past and future activities.

Public access stations are created when a cable company negotiates a franchise agreement with a local government. Not all franchise agreements include these public access channels. Some have access channels just for local governments where you can watch town meetings and other government functions. Others are educational e.g. a school district with its own channel. Another kind is local origination, where the cable company serves the community by producing local news and sports shows. The public access channels, sometimes called Community TV, are the kind which allow citizens to produce and broadcast their own shows. The mission of these public access channels is to encourage the widest spectrum of local programming and to provide ordinary citizens with access to the tools for producing this programming. These channels can be a great resource. For instance, the New York Staten Island Community TV channel offers a 20 hour video production course for $60 that’s open to anyone in Staten Island. You won’t find a better price anywhere. In addition, they offer studio or location production and editing packages. Each community has it’s own rules about what can air and what can’t, but most require that the programs be non-commercial. According to Lance Armstrong, the Outreach Director at for Staten Island Community TV, a business could produce an informational show about their industry as long it’s not a sales program. Ask your own access channel about their requirements. There are over 1000 public access stations across the country. You can find a list of Public Access Stations here or call your local Cable TV company. If your town does not have a public access channel, look into other nearby cable systems. The residency requirements are not always carved in stone. Sometimes all you need is a local resident to sponsor you. You’ll find that the public access people try hard to be accommodating.

HISTORY

Mass media have never guaranteed access by the common man. Throughout history, each new medium seemed to tip the balance of equal expression further in favor of the wealthy elite. Literacy gave the written word to those who could afford an education. Newspapers, magazines, radio and television have had exclusive ownership, and paid advertising as a means of personal expression has been hindered by high rates. Even the notion of publicly owned airwaves has never guaranteed people automatic access to them. The common man’s traditional forum has often been a soapbox in the town-square - a strong voice on a busy street corner. Today, the corner teeming with pedestrians is dying, replaced by shopping malls whose corporate owners prohibit protesters and orators. But in many communities with cable television, the common man has a new soapbox - one from which his voice can potentially reach thousands of cable subscribers. Public access TV, also called cable access, community access, community television, and PEG (Public, Education and Government), is a system that provides television production equipment, training and airtime on a local cable channel, so members of the public can produce their own shows and televise them to a mass audience. In the United States, public access depends on the cable medium. Community Antenna Television began in Astoria, Oregon, when L. E. Parsons erected an antenna atop the hotel in which he lived to receive the broadcasts of KRSC-TV in Seattle, Washington. He later extended service to the hotel lobby, then to a nearby music store, and later to residences

Rediscovering

Italy

Project description:

This series of mini-documentaries will explore the Italian artisan, his art, his culture, his mind and the creative means in which he or she works to make his craft. The design of the program is to find specific wines typical of the region along with typical recipes and blend them into discovering artisans that continue to perform jobs that have long been forgotten or risk disappearing as the younger generation looks for less laborious jobs.

Pilot Show:

This show will bring us into the Tuscan region with it¢s rich culture in wine and food. As the show opens in Enoteca Vanni, one of the oldest wine cellars in Europe, our host briefly describes some of the wonders that will be discovered as we travel through the western region of Tuscany. Not far from

Lucca is the quaint town of Vicopisano. Here, we discover Lenzi Ceramiche, a small studio where Massimo Lenzi, the owner, explains how he and his lone potter and artist create wondrous works of art. Their pieces are completely handcrafted and without the use of templates or molds as some ceramic studios have begun to do. Returning back towards Lucca we stop at a hidden ristorante, Ristorante Mecenate, and here we learn to cook and enjoy the some of the local foods of the Tuscan region. Meals that were once enjoyed by nobleman and peasants alike. It is also near Lucca, up in the hills where Tenuta Valgiano produces its wine combining both traditional methods and modern methods. We watch how the grapes are handpicked, sorted and amazingly still crushed manually. It is here that we learn that by carefully sorting and crushing grapes the rich bouquet of the grape can be made into a fine wine. Traveling south through the region we come across the historical Etruscan town of Volterra and upon reaching the top of this hilltop town, within its walls are artisans chiseling and shaping alabaster stone into beautiful sculptures that are both illuminating and musical. It is here we find the studios of Alab¢Arte and Opus Artis.

SPOTLIGHT The Obama Bash

-What You Can Expect to See I attended President-elect Barack Obama’s presidential campaign rally in Pittsburgh, PA. There were thousands lined up around the Mellon Arena and thousands standing along the famous Centre Avenue. As I stood, fourth in line, I met the first group of people. They arrived at 6am for an event that began at 5pm. There was a woman with her teenaged daughter and her daughter’s friends-covered with campaign buttons, Obama hats and T-shirts. They huddled inside a tent as if waiting in line to get JayZ or Jonas Brothers concert tickets. “He’s inspirational, we want to be a part of history”, one of the teenagers exclaimed. On January 20, 2009, Presidentelect Barack Obama will become the 44th president of the United States of America and the first African American President. We can expect to see this

Governor Janet Napolitano of Arizona, head of Homeland Security and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. And last, but not least, two Republicans, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and Representative Ray LaHood of Illinois as Transportation Secretary. Above all, expect to see the beginning stages of change. When I stood in line at the Pittsburgh rally amid the freezing cold temperaturesI noticed a kind of positivity taking place. The young talked to the old, the Blacks talked to the Whites, the Asians talked to the Hispanics, the wealthy spoke to the poor, the educated talked

to the uneducated. We ordered pizza, talked about the status of the country and Obama’s potential for greatness. People were talking about their government as if they believed that they were truly going to be apart of something renewed and remarkable. The words “We the people” were never more present and clear in this crowd. As Obama addresses the nation and the world, we can expect to see his words of change motivate the people into perfecting a more perfect union. Yes, we can. -By Heidi Davis

Deuce-Three Productions, Egg Pictures, Moon Zappa, Robot Films, Time Magazine, Robert Cort Productions, and many others. Current-run major-media TV shows such as ‘True Blood’, ‘Trust Me’, ‘The Ellen Degeneres Show’ and others, all have found a place to work, rest, plot, scheme and dream at the Formosa-lot. The famous and the infamous alike can often be spotted among the many Southern California-regional bird species that rest in the shade-trees overhead, above the CFC ‘main office’ occupied by West Coast-Division president Blaney Lamont Davis, and a recently added second office for Tom Luong of Tom Luong Films, who has partnered for projects with CFC since September of 2008. Lot management includes Greg Harless (lot executive) and Dusty Barbee of studio-services. Steffany Kovacs will help you park your car, along with Dave Del Prete, to whom security matters are directed. Telephone and communications work, such as installations, Fax-service, repairs, changes and disconnects, are available from Erick Feigin and Barclay Virden, and be sure to enjoy the ‘global cuisine’ of Gary Arabia in the commissary, when you stop by to pitch your latest super-amazing film or TV pitch. Almost anything you need or want can be found at the Formosa-lot (just like ‘Alice’s Restaurant’)---from acupuncture services, to car-wash detailing, copying, computer and audio-equipment rental, digital imaging, public notary, postage, and so on. This WB-managed production lot also features both a 30-seat digital-and-film projection screening room, and another screening room that will seat 130 people, with similar equipment. For film-makers, TV-production and other media ventures, it’s an environment tailor-made to nurture creativity and enjoyable artistic energy, which every successful ‘Hollywood Ego’ deserves. “I’m enjoying the work here, and the offices on the lot,” Tom Luong said. “It’s a great place to get things done, and Blaney Davis and myself seem to connect on both the business-side and also the creative.” Stop by the CFC offices at Space 98, or ring Extension 2915, and say hello!

WITTE’S END is a comedic play to die for! The most fun you’ll ever have at a suicide! A hysterical, fast-paced, sexy, laugh-out-loud comedy about life and death as seen from the bottom of a glass. Peter Witte, self-proclaimed “hack” screenwriter is going to end it all because he lacks legitimacy as a playwright. He has five bottles of wine, one of which contains poison. He opens each bottle in a unique game of Russian Roulette, while his friends, neighbors and strangers watch with horror and humor fearful that any bottle may contain the “fatal draught.” This play synopsis sums up the hilarity that a talented cast brings to the stage along with the brilliance of a wonderful script at the Riprap Theatre in North Hollywood, CA. WITTE’S END is written by Evan Keliher, a Korean War Veteran who had taught in public schools for 30 years and written multiple plays, screenplays, sitcoms and novels. One such novel, entitled GRANDPA’S MARIJUANA HANDBOOK, came from Evan’s use of marijuana to treat glaucoma, which he has had since ’62 and may have been his inspiration for writing WITTE’S END. The production is directed by David Stewart, who has co-owned the Riprap Theatre since 1999 with actress and producer, Sandra Nutt. Sandra, who plays the sultry soap opera actress Rona,

a battalion of 500 soldiers and is a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter pilot, who fights California wildfires each year, along with other various state missions. The plot of WITTE’S END thickens when Peter Witte’s ex-wife, played by Laura Napoli, and his agent, played by PaSean Wilson, who is known for her role in “Striptease”, enter the story line. To add to the character driven insanity of the play, the cop, played by Christopher Ruiz, threatens to arrest everyone but the man he’s there to prevent from suicide. WITTE’S END is a play not to be missed and will have audiences laughing out loud. It can be seen at Riprap Studio Theatre, at 5755 Lankershim Boulevard, N. Hollywood, CA 91601. The running time of the performance is approximately 1 hour, 45 minutes with intermission. WITTE’S END runs January and February 2009. Performances are Fri 8PM; Sat 8PM, Sunday 2PM and 7PM with no Matinee performance on Sunday January 11, 2009. Tickets can be purchased for General Seating $18.00 at the box office or online at, http://www.riprapentertain. com/tickets.html. Student, senior and group discounts are also available, and the theatre offers a limited number of half-price tickets throughout the run at Brown Paper Tickets:http://www.brownpapertickets. com/event/48055.

She plans to take the California Bar Exam in July 2009 and can also be seen as the host of Riprap Entertainment TV in 2009 on KDOC. The extremely talented and experienced ensemble of WITTE’S END is lead by Darrell Philip, who plays Peter Witte and is a life-long actor, and has even been a new reporter and producer in Texas before moving out to Los Angeles for his acting career. RJ Farrington is hilarious as Old Lady Crammer, and is followed by an innocent but sexually conflicted Catholic Priest, Father Finn, played by Matthew Edward Frieberg. Beside working as a full-time actor, Matt Frieberg also serves in the California Army National Guard as an officer in charge of operations for

A QUESTION FROM OUR WEBSITE Will the Struggling Economy Effect Tinsel town? If history has taught us any lessons, entertainment industry insiders should consider America’s hard times as its gold mine. Following The Stock Market Crash of 1929, which lead to the Great Depression, the economy fell into a devastating slump. People turned to escape routes such as the film and entertainment industry in order to get away from everyday problems like job loss, buying food and paying bills. “During the depression, half the United States population went to movies every week. Up to 50 gangster movies were produced each year along with very popular films about poor girls marrying rich men. As Americans continued to go to movies, they started regaining confidence in the government and in themselves.” “No medium has contributed more greatly than the film to the maintenance of the national morale during a period featured by revolution, riot and political turmoil in other countries.” - Will Hays, head of the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors Association in 1934.

Today’s film industry may not be able to restore America’s confidence in the government because the struggling public may not be able to escape to the big screen due to the big prices. Have you gone to the movies lately? The price of a movie ticket approximately cost an average of $ 7.50 for children and seniors; $9.50 for students or military; $10.50 for average adults. In addition to the price of snacks, the average moviegoer could expect to pay over an average of $25 per person. In the 1920’s, the average price was $.27 a ticket, and pennies for snacks. Many people who want to hold on to their extra cash may choose to visit their local Target or Wal-Mart to purchase recently released theatrical DVDs or television sitcom series DVDs, such as Friends, Seinfeld, or 24. Today’s moviegoers could leave Hollywood CEOs and production companies calling for their own bailout, as the public searches for more financially reasonable methods of entertainment.

filming is most critical in the overall production. Careful organization and coordination is vital to the success of the film. In this stage, the producers will complete many organizational tasks such as securing locations, crew, talent, and equipment, as well as finalizing the budget, storyboard, shot list, and acting rehearsals. Our schedule allows for three weeks of official preproduction for this film.

Production:

Joe Turkstarof & Romira Sacre

This phase of the project is associated with the actual shooting of the film. This intense period is carefully organized in the preproduction phase so as to make shooting as efficient and successful as possible. We anticipate a four-week shoot that will begin in early 2009. Post-Production: The final phase of production involves editing of the film, final selection of music, sound enhancement, special effects, and most importantly, the final cut of the film. This phase typically takes three months to complete for a project of this length.

Synopsis

Your Land is the story of Eddie Cope, a young man returning home to his rural roots after serving overseas in the war. He arrives at his childhood home only to find that his father, a truck driver, has mysteriously passed away leaving his recently widowed mother surrounded by clutter, overwhelmed by bills, and addicted to soap operas, her only companion a fish named Unicorn. Curious to discover more about his father, Eddie begins to make frequent visits into town to visit his grandmother at the nursing home. Here he soon begins to fall for the receptionist Camilla, a young Mexican woman who is full of personality and in a rush to get married and start a family of her own. Surrounded by women and worn down by the system, Eddie begins to drive his late fathers eighteen-wheeler truck, finding comfort in the open road and the free country he was fighting for. All is well until one night on the road he is confronted by a runaway fast food employee, an amateur bikini contest and one little lie leading- Eddie to end up with more than he paid for. 34 / HOLLYWOOD WORKS / JANUARY 2009

Overview

YOUR LAND is a feature length script and an independent film to be directed by Lance Lindahl in the first quarter of 2009. Your Land is a story that serves as a photograph of the reality of the times we are living in. Not only does it preserve a period in time but it also draws upon the always-constant human condition and mankind’s ability to find hope and comfort through a well-told story.

Benefits of Sponsoring

Your Land is a gritty American film that has its finger not only on the pulse of the common folk but of Hollywood’s hipsters as well. It is a story of both love and loneliness-- capturing these moments of life that we can all relate to. Your Land will feature beautiful shots of the American landscape, encompassing a style all of its own that will appeal to trendsetters of all ages and walks of life. Because sponsorship is an overall part of our production plan, we are able to organically incorporate a sponsor’s name and product into this film in a

way that the audience will appreciate. With this being a truck drivin’ film there will be many opportunities to showcase the products in different situations such as on billboards, products and clothing used by the characters, and even the trucks themselves. We will guarantee a certain number of appearances by the product in the film, as well as including the sponsor’s logo in the credits and on packaging and promotional materials. Footage from the movie will be provided to sponsor to be used as in-store promotional video. There are several other exciting ways we will promote and support sponsors, depending on what level sponsor chooses to be involved.

Production Phrases

“A5874” G

A SHORT FILM

rowing up I would sit with my favorite cousin, Relly , and she would tell me in detail of her experiences as a holocaust survivor. I never intentionally set out to write this project. As an actor, in Queens my roots were always in comedy. Her stories haunted me. I kept seeing images of the experiences she related in my mind and in my dreams until one day after her passing my pen just couldn’t write fast enough. I wrote the script in a matter of minutes, because I had heard it all before. I knew exactly how she saw what she saw, heard what she heard, endured what she endured and the stories that she miraculously lived to be able to share with me. My goal for A5874 is that it will serve as a tribute to the indomitable nature of the human spirit. A5874 takes you from the horrors of the Holocaust to the brutal realities of life in modern day Israel, as experienced by one survivor. Without the use of dialogue, we follow the struggle of a woman to survive the harrowing hardships of one specific day in a concentration camp. Then we flash forward 60 years where we witness her surviving a terrorists’ bomb on a street in modern day Israel.

Because “A5874” is a short film containing no dialogue it is universally comprehensibleandthepowerfulmessage will keep even the shortest attention span. Via the use of point of view visuals and sound distortion the audience will be transported to a concentration camp with A5874. They will hear what she hears and see what she sees, creating a personal and visceral experience for the viewer. Any school in the world can show this and still leave plenty of time for a discussion afterwards. The film would even be able to be downloaded onto an I-pod. Today more than ever it is imperative that “A5874” is made. There are currently organizations and groups around the world either grossly underestimating the true extent of the holocaust or even denying its existence altogether. In past decade the appalling instances of genocides occurring in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Rwanda, and Burundi serve as a dismal reminder that the oft-heard pledge made in the aftermath of the holocaust of “never again” has fallen woefully short. This film will not only to serve as a testament to the bravery of my cousin, but will also deliver a powerful message of hope and endurance in the face of the dangers of the global effects of hatred and intolerance.

The Sport Movie Synopsis

WAKE is not only a passionate artistic endeavor, but a sound sponsorship opportunity as well.

RIDE THE WAKE is an engaging story about an athletic young woman coming of age just as her promising wakeboarding career is starting to take off. Faced with a wellintentioned but overprotective father and a slew of guys trying to date her, it’s not easy to stay focused on the upcoming competition!

Overview

RIDE THE WAKE is a short film to be directed by Jennifer Akana Sturla in the late summer of 2007. RIDE THE WAKE is much more than a wakeboarding movie: it is a smart, heartfelt comedy with great characters that will appeal to a broad market. What you hold in your hand is an ambitious, yet realistic, production plan. We have included a summary of the project’s story, bios of the filmmakers, and the production model we will be working under.

Project Intent

RIDE THE WAKE was conceived as a way to introduce people to the exciting sport of wakeboarding through a groundbreaking film that uses a scripted, narrative approach to the subject, while offering wakeboarding footage that even seasoned pros will gasp at. Our initial plan is to really get this movie out to the wakeboarding and action sports communities. However, the exciting thing about RIDE THE WAKE is that it is much more than a wakeboarding movie: it is a smart comedy with great characters that will appeal to a broad market. The sports component enhances this film rather than limiting it. We hope to reach the mass market through numerous distribution channels, and get this movie into the hands of as many young men and women as possible. To achieve this, we are currently in discussions with companies about the possibility of distributing the movie through them to DVD, television, and internet outlets, as well as film festivals. Young consumers have proven to have an insatiable appetite for action sports video; action sports DVDs are a major success story for short form content. We are working with a top notch crew of narrative and action sports filmmakers to make this a wakeboarding film unlike any other. We will be shooting on film that gives us a rich and vibrant feel. The strength of this kind of filmmaking ultimately lies in the quality of the script, the strong drive of the producers, and the utilization of very talented cast and crew. Our aim is to get the level of production value seen in a multi-million dollar feature film with a budget of $100,000. We anticipate that audiences will greatly enjoy the quality of the story and the film while appreciating the incredible visuals. We aim to show you that RIDE THE

SANTA CLARITA VALLEY FILM FESTIVAL SHOWCASES FILMS

RIDE THE WAKE is one of the first movies of its kind: a scripted action sports narrative with a female lead, sharp dialogue, and killer wakeboarding footage. Action sports short films are a great sponsorship opportunity to begin with because of their popularity and existing fan base, and due to the unique nature of this film we anticipate that it will receive significantly more attention than other movies in the genre. It will make a splash in the sports video world, and then extend beyond that to a broader audience of kids, teenagers, and young adults who might never watch a wakeboarding documentary but will gladly watch a well-scripted short. So not only is RIDE THE WAKE going to reach current wakeboarders, it will actually bring new people in to this rapidly growing sport... and their first exposure to it will be through the products of the sponsors in this film.

Is Teepop This Generation’s Andy Warhol?

Both Andy Warhol and Tawanda Davis, aka, Teepop were born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, studied art in Pittsburgh and New York City, and gained popularity in diverse social circles that include artists, scholars, and Hollywood celebrities. Warhol defined pop art. He combined images and icons of popular culture with art. Warhol’s pop art phenomenon may be best characterized by his ‘Campbell’s Soup Cans’ silk screen work.

Some critics are calling Teepop this generation’s Warhol. Teepop is taking Warhol’s definition of pop art and twisting it into her own unique style. Drawing on a deep love of music and pop culture, Teepop has been fusing the styles of Pop, Street and Graphic Design in her paintings and sculptures of musicians, actors and icons for more than two decades. Her vibrantly-colored portraits have featured legendary people from all genres and time periods: from Debbie Harry to Tupac Shakur, from Betty Page to Jean-Michel Basquiat, from Wonder Woman to Frida Kahlo. Constantly gathering inspiration from music, culture and everyday life, Teepop creates paintings primarily in acrylics, but has also branched out to produce works that merge acrylics, oil sticks and aerosols. Her paintings and designs have appeared not only on canvas, but also on guitars, skateboards, Adirondack chairs, clothing and even cars. In addition to personal exhibitions and special projects, Teepop is also available for commission work . 20 / HOLLYWOOD WORKS / JANUARY 2009

. After studying in New York City, Teepop moved to Miami, Florida to obtain a degree in Graphic Design. She spent time working for Brazilian artist Romero Britto, named the state of Florida’s Ambassador of the Arts, and a fixture in the international art scene since

1989, when he was commissioned by Absolut Vodka to design a bottle label for a company advertising campaign. After some time working for Britto, Teepop begain to branch out on her own. She gained tremendous popularity and success following her first art show.

can almost see yourself here...

Celebrities and local art enthusiastics commissioned her work. Teepop along with Jamie Foxx, Paris Hilton, and other celebrities participated in a Red Cross charity event to help Katrina Victims. At that event, Teepop auctioned off her painting of Ray Charles. Furthermore, Teepop has been selected to paint one of the 10-foot tall fiberglass Gibson Les Paul model guitars along with other acclaimed visual artists. The guitars will be placed throughout Miami in front of city landmarks, sponsor locations, and other popular destinations for several months. This project will unite the Miami art, music, and business communities behind the opportunity to raise proceeds for local charities. While it is still unknown if Teepop will accept being labeled this generation’s Warhol, what is certainly true is that she is definitely the Warhol for the computer generation. She uses the internet and her computer skills to add to her art and open her art to the world. Pop art lovers, buyers, and commissioners can go to teepop.com to browse through the many paintings of artists such as Amy Winehouse, Madonna, U2, Cindy Lauper, Bob Marley, Jerry Garcia, Mick Jagger, Billie Holiday, and countless others. Warhol originated the concept of “15 minutes of fame”, based on Teepop’s amazing artwork, popular appeal, and worldwide demand, it is clear that she will have infinite minutes of fame. ~By Heidi Davis
